Reindeers are better than people.

For the first half of the movie, this is pretty much Kristoff's mantra. Not only does he sing it to his reindeer companion, Sven, as part of a cute little bedtime ditty, but...he genuinely believes it. 'People will beat you and curse you and cheat you.' They're jerks and they're all bad, every last one of them. Granted, he had just gotten tossed- bodily, I might add -out of a shop/sauna for calling the owner a crook, an incident which was likely the inspiration for said bedtime ditty, however, Kristoff is a loner by nature. He's got his sled and he's got Sven, which is all he needs to get by out in the mountains, harvesting ice (a profession he started to prepare for as a kiddo). He prefers it that way. Sven is totally a fantastic conversationalist- so what if Kristoff speaks for him? Got the voice down and everything. They've been together for years, he knows what Sven is thinking, even when he wants to pretend he doesn't, like the time Sven kept nudging him to go back to the palace after Anna and he insisted he couldn't understand Sven when he talked that way.

(No, there's nothing weird about pitching your voice so you sound like what you'd imagine your reindeer would if he could talk. There's nothing weird about that at all. You're weird.)

Kristoff might've kept contact with other human beings as minimal as possible, in fact, if Anna hadn't imposed herself on him. Never mind he's an orphan and was raised by a bunch of love experts- er, trolls (no really, they're actual trolls, in a figurative and literal sense). Never mind he's a sensitive guy who needs the contact and the interaction more than he'd ever admit. Sure, he hems and haws and tries to scare Anna at first by going way too fast in the sled (that gets destroyed), but she doesn't react the way he expects her to. She never does. And...that's not so bad! At all! He can be himself around her, can even have fun with her- she's like another Sven, except. Not a reindeer. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaa? It's only when he starts to realize he cares about Anna, maybe even loves her, that he gets a little awkward and unsure of himself, which is a strange new experience. He's got a ton of quirks that he doesn't think twice about and he knows he's good at all aspects of his job and then Anna busts into his life and shakes everything up, throws him off balance. Even so, when Anna's running out of time, his only thought is getting her back home as fast as he can, and that means letting her go, no matter how much it hurts him to do it. She's engaged to someone else, after all, and that someone else is the person who can save her, not Kristoff.

But this is Disney so. Ya know. Happy endings.

Anyway, let's talk about those quirks! Kristoff is cool with eating stuff that has been inside a reindeer's mouth and is covered with reindeer slobber. Ain't no thing. He does wash himself but he still winds up kinda smelly (again, his primary companion for most of his life up until this point was Sven, and reindeers smell). He can be very blunt and gruff and cranky, not to mention gross. He expressed disgust at the fact that Anna got engaged after knowing her fiance for a day and asked her all these questions about Hans that she didn't know the answers to, following up with a line about guys picking their noses and eating their boogers- according to Kristoff, all guys do it. Which means he has done it, maybe more than a few times. Nice!!! Also he cleans his sled (IT'S MAHOGANY) with his own spit and yet freaks out when Anna puts her feet up ON THE MAHOGANY (and some of his spit flies in her face). He thinks Elsa's ice palace is the coolest thing in the world and gets pretty bummed when Anna says she wants to go in alone first. He plays the lute! He knows how to sing! He wanted to tell Olaf what would happen to a snowman in summer, because he thought somebody should break the bad news, but Anna ordered him not to. He gets all nervous when he's taking Anna to meet the trolls because they're loud and inappropriate and really heavy, you guys, seriously.

And he asked Anna for permission to kiss her instead of just doing it, which is pretty great.
