Personality:

Raine Sage is a young woman who has had to take on many roles in her life, usually ones laden with responsibility. Teacher, sister, healer, historian, technology expert, tactician - she's used to juggling a lot of things on her plate. Among her usual companions, she is known for being the pragmatic voice of reason, with a level head and a calm demeanor, usually mistaken for a cold one. Sometimes they accuse of being cold-hearted when her suggestions usually involve the larger picture instead of dealing with the short-term problems, though she usually made a point of abiding by Lloyd or Colette's decisions instead of forcing her opinion onto their actions. In a way it shows how she's willing to believe in her students, even if she disagrees with the method that they're taking. She can deliver the truth swiftly when she feels it needs to be heard, or when her opinion is asked for, and while others may find it harsh, (Sheena in particular took a while to warm up to her, referring to Raine's methods as 'devious' but seeming impressed by her intelligence) she believes it's important to keep logic at hand, especially when one's decision could alter the state of the world.

She prefers to think things through and have a plan before acting, though she's had to come up with a few on the spot (such as the initial decision to explode the human ranches, which later developed into more established plans). Her ability to heal would become very important, as a deep seated regret of failures - as well as necessity - inspired her to seek ways to learn more skills, such as finding Boltzman's book of healing theories, as well as obtaining the unicorn horn, which enhanced her abilities further, and she puts those skills to use as their journey continues. She's very scholarly, so can often be found with a book, or making lists of the plants and monsters they encounter as well.

While she still has difficulty putting trust in others (she berated herself thoroughly after Kratos's apparent betrayal, and had refused to heal Sheena until Colette insisted), over the course of the game, she began to believe in Lloyd and his ideals, which she admitted was something that was affecting the way she viewed the world -- learning to believe in the possibility of change. She even has a quote that best illustrates this realization. "...It's ironic. My human blood spurs my intellectual curiosity, and my elven blood provides me with the years I need to satisfy it. It's almost as if I'm acknowledging being happy that I was born a half-elf. Even though, up until now, I've never once thought such a thing before..." This is a statement that later gives her a stronger push to accepting who she is, though her canonpoint takes her immediately from a brief moment of doubt in a trap set by Mithos, before Lloyd arrives.

Overall she does a good job of trying to seem more put together than she actually is, as few seem to catch on when things are bothering her because of her very private nature. She's actually very dependent on her brother, though she doesn't seem to realize it, caught up in all of her responsibilities as she is. (According to him, she can't do laundry, or cook, so he does most of the household chores when she gets too busy anyway). She cares for him and can be overprotective at times (and he of her), though she also thought that he would be safe in the village with Colette's family while she went on the initial world regeneration journey with Colette and Kratos, which implied that she must have thought highly of them, given her issues with trust at the time. She also tends to be less careful about her own health, focusing more on others instead of her own problems. She practically hovers over Genis when he trips and skins his knee, tending to him and scolding him - though gets to a point where she faints due to an illness by either not realizing the seriousness of her condition or figuring that she could just plow through it. There also have been moments where in the face of a conflict of a personal nature, she will go out of her way to avoid it, in some cases even running off so as not to be seen in her distress. She tends to use the phrase "it's nothing" quite often if questioned about a murmured remark, or if she seems distracted. She doesn't want anyone to have concern for her, only for them think that she's as capable as she acts.

It's also important to examine her experiences.

Raine was born in the elven village of Heimdall, in Tethe'alla, to her elven mother, Virginia and her human father, Kloitz. This makes her half-elven, and her race played a strong part in how she lived her life. Half-elves were despised by elves as well as humans, and a scandal in the village eventually resulted in the banishment of her family. Around the same time, the university of Sybak was made aware that Raine was a prodigy, gifted in many areas. Unbeknownst to Raine (until she finally found her mother in Exire later), they were the reason why the family could never settle down after being cast out of the village. The university was open to humans, though it made a point to gather intelligent half-elves and force them to live and work in the basements.

There are a few traumatic incidents that still haunt her. A prominent incident occurred when Raine had fallen off of a ship that they had been traveling on to escape from their pursuers, nearly drowning. She has been affected by aquaphobia ever since, refusing to go near any large bodies of water if she can help it and later insisting that she wasn't afraid when confronted by it. Otherwise she seems to have a mental block on most of her childhood memories prior to her abandonment. For many years Raine was angry about what had happened, tucking that anger inside of herself, and taking on the mature role of raising her brother. In this sense, Raine was forced to abandon her childhood completely, as she had to become a caregiver to her infant brother at the age of eleven.

The trauma from this event led to her blocking out the existence of Tethe'alla and instead leaving her to focus on the role ahead of her. She and Genis moved around Sylvarant, though their struggles were difficult at first, and led her to great despair, though instead of letting the bad experiences get the better of them, she eventually resolved to "harden her heart" so she wouldn't have to hate anyone (unlike her brother, who has a more difficult time). Raine and her brother learned to refer to themselves as elves, though it was more difficult for Genis at first given his age, and his slipping led to them having to leave at least one other village before they could settle in Iselia. She's very accustomed to traveling, though all she wanted was to find a place the two of them could call home, and finding a place she felt comfortable enough to think of as a home - there was a time she was in doubt of even returning to Iselia, during a time they incorrectly believed the two worlds would be split apart forever.

Raine pursued the idea of finding a teaching job - despite her young age - so she would be able to keep an eye on her brother and obtain enough wages to keep a roof over both of their heads, though it took years before she was able to make this a reality. It shows that at a young age, she was already dedicated toward choosing the path of responsibility - instead of panicking or abandoning her little brother, she dedicated her life toward raising him, as well as furthering her own education. As a teacher, she's very intense - her students look up to her, but she tends to be a strict disciplinarian. She gives her students praise when they have the right answers, and shows her rare soft side when she provides them with advice in difficult situations. She's supportive but tends to avoid coddling.

In classes she generally seems calm and patient, unless there is deliberate misbehaving or instances where students doze off during lessons. In one such case she has reacted by flinging an eraser, or making them stand in a corner to hold a bucket of water. Her knowledge was respected, though her punishments were "scary". This is best illustrated by her relationship with Lloyd, in some ways, though he's hardly the example of an average student and as far as studies are concerned, she seemed almost at her wits end in trying to get him to grasp academics. Though he made up for it with his friendship, and accepting both her and her brother once they were no longer able to conceal the truth about their heritage.

It's also important to note, as race is the crux of the conflicts in her world, that Raine does her best to not react in anger toward people for their treatment of her. She'd rather let people form their own opinions of her due to her actions; she's not going to go out of her way to sell herself. Her frustration shows more toward her fellow half-elves, especially at the Desians, who make it a point to torment humans in ranches and are quite aggressive in their lifestyle. In confrontations she often refers to them as idiots and stands by the group and the decisions she has made with her life up to that point. Raine clearly does not agree with their ideals - it says a lot that she's a half elf living in a human village willing to teach their children all for the sake of bringing up her brother correctly - and she repeatedly tells Genis that "they're not like us; we're different", even during the time she was still referred to as an elf. However, when they were finally able to return to Heimdall and were denied entry, she doesn't complain even while weighed down by the nostalgia of her childhood, which hadn't begun to hit her until they had returned to Tethe'alla. When the human mayor in Iselia starts to bluster in the face of their lies being revealed, she runs away from the conversation instead of arguing with him like the others, though is more overcome by the emotion of the villagers speaking up in acceptance of her and her brother - something she never thought was possible.

Another important - and perhaps bizarre - side of her is one that is also connected to her abandonment, the fact that she tends to go into what Lloyd calls "ruin mode" around ancient ruins and artifacts. In a whirl of high energy and mania, she's rather obsessed with past civilizations, academia, magitechnology, unusual plants, and discovery, and often goes so far into this personality shift that it overrides her usual common sense, and she can become very careless. She can become very demanding, sometimes even violent, and unreasonable. The reason why she's obsessed with the ruins in the first place was part of her desperately wanting to find the place where she was abandoned, although even after finally reaching the Otherworldly Gate (and notably not going into her mania when reaching it), this obsession still lingers. That manic energy can sometimes tie in to her (oft repressed) creativity, especially where cooking is concerned - when she's coming up with a new recipe, and you see that light in her eyes, it's best to go the other way.
