Sawako is that creepy girl in class. The one with an aura that screams evil and stay away. So, because of that, one would assume that she is creepy and mean, or the kind of person that would cast a curse on someone. Which is....completely, 100% false. Sure, she definitely looks the part, but in reality her personality is about as far from that as humanly possible.
In fact, Sawako is a girl with a really big heart who always tries her hardest, and even though her classmates always get her name wrong—they call her Sadako instead of Sawako, after the girl in The Ring--and they spread rumors about her being cursed and being able to see ghosts, she never holds it against them and always tries to greet them with a smile. (Which usually backfires, because she's accidentally really creepy when she tries to smile.) She holds the people around her in high regard, and never wants to disappoint them, going so far as to sign up to be a ghost in the test of courage so she can try and meet her class's expectations of her. She tries so hard to be accepted and meet other people's expectations, even though creepy isn't who she is at heart.
Actually, what Sawako wants most is to be cute. Despite her aura and creepy appearance, she's definitely a girl at heart. Her room is cute, she likes cute things, and a little later on in the series it's brought to light that she aspires to be like Kurumi—one of the girls who likes Kazehaya, and Sawako's rival. Kurumi is cute, well-liked, and seemingly friendly; everything that Sawako wants to be, and even though Kurumi spread horrible rumors and is a bitter person at her core, Sawako doesn't hold it against her, and still looks up to her. Really, Sawako is a pretty forgiving person all around.
She's honest, too, and is the kind of person that tries to be as straight forward as she possibly can, because Kazehaya showed her that if she lets people know what she's thinking and feeling, then they'll definitely understand her. And having people understand her is part of what she wants. Yeah, she want's to meet people's expectations of her, but she also wants to clear up any and all misunderstandings along the way, so she can make more friends and be surrounded by friendly people.
Speaking of, misunderstandings are a huge thing as well, given how many of them surround Sawako and how many of them crop up over the course of the series. They're a thing that Sawako desperately tries to clear up, especially if they deal with one of her friends. The problem is that she tends to misunderstand situations herself, given she doesn't have much social experience, and doesn't really know how to read most situations. Because of that, she over thinks things, reaching conclusions that aren't correct. Which is kind of ironic, given how much she wants people to know the truth and understand her.
Despite everything Sawako wants and hopes to become, she's surprisingly non-confrontational. She didn't mind so much when people spread rumors and were rude to her, and only really got upset when they badmouthed her friends. She's used to being misunderstood and having rumors spread because of it, so it's something she's grown accustomed to, almost. She's shy and easily becomes nervous, as well, which doesn't really help with confronting bullies. So really, she's got a long way to go before she can easily and firmly stand up for herself.
All in all, Sawako is a girl at heart. She's honest, friendly, and tries her hardest in everything she does. She values her friendships, and just wants people to understand her. Which is easier said than done, in her case.
