Personality:

Milla Maxwell isn't just your average girl, she's pretty extraordinary.

From the very beginning of the story, she's fierce and determined. She has a mission that's been given to her and she never wavers from reaching her goal no matter the cost. She tries without relent and does not give up until her objective is complete. Even when others tell her to slow down, or to stop, she doesn't listen. Because she is Milla Maxwell, and she never gives up. This is evident when an accident occurs later on and Milla becomes temporarily paralyzed. Even though she cannot walk or move her legs she never gives in to forgetting her mission. She goes as far as to crawl along the floor because that is just how little she wants to stop moving forward.

This goes back to when Milla was a child, she didn't know much else aside from what she was told by The Four and what she learned from books. This caused her to have a very different view of the world than an average person. What she knew of humans and the way they live their lives she knew from observing them and reading about them in books. Due to this, when Milla is older she doesn't really understand human interaction very well. She often comes off as cold and distant when in actuality she just doesn't understand why she is seemingly so cold. In her eyes she's just doing what is necessary to save everyone, even if that means she has to sacrifice being sentimental in the process. Like when Elize has lost her doll Teepo and asks Milla if they can please look for him. Even though Milla is extremely fond of Elize, she says no because they don't have time and it would be too great a detour for her to consider.

That isn't to say that Milla is mean or cruel, because she's not at all. She's actually incredibly kind! It's just hard for her to express human emotions very easily because she was raised like a spirit and not a human. Throughout the course of the story Milla consistently encourages her party members. With Elize for example there comes a point where she needs to jump down from a very high point and she doesn't know if she can do it. Milla tells her that she knows that she can do it, and so Elize takes a leap of faith and Milla catches her. There is another time later where Leia is very upset with low self esteem and talks down to herself saying she's holding everyone back. Milla then steps in and tells her to quit thinking that she's inferior to anyone here. Because to Milla, everyone in her party has a meaningful life and they are all equally strong and important.

Milla's emotional development changes over the course of the story. Toward the end she's more expressive and has learned a great deal from human culture. She even views humans very differently than she did in the beginning. At the start, she mentions how she sees man as being like babies. Beings that couldn't stand on their own and needed to be protected. However, through meeting Jude and the rest of her friends she learns that humans are capable on their own and her fondness for them grows even more. Speaking of humans, Milla really loves humans. She loves both humans and spirits more than anything else and would give her life to protect them. Actually, she does that. Near the middle of the game Milla sacrifices herself and dies because at the time she believed that it would save both spirits and humans. That's how much she loves them, and that love is pretty strong. After the events of the game she even takes on the title of Maxwell, one that she earned from a young age and becomes the new Lord of the Spirits. This allows her to watch over the birth of new spirits and protect the world she loves so dearly.

Aside from being physically strong, Milla is also intellectually strong. She's able to figure people out, and know when someone has malicious intent versus when someone has a kind heart. This is pretty evident by how she's trusting of Alvin at first but when things start to go awry she can tell that he's very untrustworthy. From that moment on, she always keeps an eye on him to make sure that he doesn't put her mission in jeopardy. This isn't to say that Milla is a genius. Most of what she knows she's learned from books and what other people have told her. She is also very capable of being wrong, because when she has her grand encounter with the Lance of Kresnik she realizes that her preconceptions about the Lance had never been right at all. Despite this, Milla is always willing and quick to learn new things.

Milla's also pretty... strange. She's got an obsession for all things human - even the really mundane things. One of those things being hunger. Milla loves food, actually, to say that she loves food would be an understatement. Milla enjoys the feeling of hunger and the feeling of enjoying a good meal. She salivates at the idea of a roast chicken in Leronde and can really pack down a meal when it's given to her. She even says "I quite enjoy ingesting calories with you!" after eating a meal with Jude and Alvin. Like, who says that? When Milla becomes a spirit after she dies, she can no longer feel the sensation of hunger however she still enjoys eating. Another example of Milla's obsession is when the group is traveling to Kanbalar and Milla sneezes. She gets extremely excited at the prospect of mucus because it's something only a human could experience. Milla really loves everything that makes a human, human. She never goes without displaying a fondness for human behavior whenever one of the group acts in such a "human" way.

Milla is strong-willed, protective, smart, kind and... sometimes a little weird. However these are all qualities that make Milla Maxwell the great Lord of the Spirits that everyone knows and loves.
