Applications Three

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
RESERVATIONS ARE OPENED!

NOTE: APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED OR PROCESSED FOR APRIL, DUE TO A CURRENT DISCUSSION ON THE GAME'S FUTURE.
RESERVATIONS WILL REMAIN OPEN FOR A LONGER PERIOD.
MAY APPLICATION CYCLE WILL BE POSTED HERE AS SOON AS IT IS DETERMINED.

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

To see what we are looking for:

Character Name: Jean Pierre Polnareff
Canon: Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders
Canon Point: After episode 27, after Polnareff and Joseph reunite with Jotaro outside the hospital.
Background/History: Official Wiki

Personality:
Jean Pierre Polnareff (or simply Polnareff, as he’s usually called) is a fairly simple man in appearance, yet more complicated in personality and motivation. Wearing matching broken heart earrings and donning a very late-‘80s, early-‘90s flat-top hairstyle, one would assume that upon first glance, he cares only about himself and potentially scoring a hot date.
They wouldn’t be completely wrong, but his emotions do actually have some substance. When Jotaro, Joseph, Avdol, and Kakyoin first meet Polnareff, he’s arrogant and calculating with his Stand, mentioning several times that Avdol’s Magician’s Red couldn’t possibly do anything to his own Silver Chariot. This arrogance costs him, though, since Avdol inevitably wins the battle, and when Polnareff is freed from Dio’s grasp, he joins the team; however, nobody anticipates the trouble he inevitably causes them with his blind rage toward ‘the man with two right hands,’ who murdered his sister Sherry years ago.
To be more specific, Polnareff becomes a target for several of the enemy Stand users after he joins Jotaro and the group. Centerfold (J. Geils in Japanese) and Hol Horse go out of their way to get him to fight them on his own, and as you can probably guess, things don’t go very well. Moments before this battle, Polnareff ignited an argument between Avdol and himself, which normally wouldn’t have been much of an issue, but Avdol eventually comes to Polnareff’s aid and during a brief moment of invulnerability, dies at the hand of Hol Horse. (Or Stand of Hol Horse, to be precise.) Polnareff, already grief stricken from his sister’s death, takes Avdol’s death even harder, and lets his emotions get to him while Hol Horse and Centerfold remain in the midst. Kakyoin has to calm him down and tell him that if he continues to act the way he does, he’ll end up like Avdol. Eventually, Hol Horse and Centerfold leave, after a bit more fighting, and Polnareff is left to think about how he potentially let two friends/family members die.

Thinking that he was the cause of both his sister’s and Avdol’s deaths, he flips back and forth between an upbeat young man and a fairly forlorn, deflated one. After several weeks of having this guilt riddle the back of his mind, Jotaro and the others lead him to a desolate island where a close friend of Joseph lives; this friend, they claim, can help them on their journey to find and defeat Dio. On this island, Polnareff wanders away from the others, his mind still clouded with thoughts of his fallen friend and sister, and when he finds a magic lamp in the sand and releases a ‘genie,’ who ends up being an enemy Stand, he immediately wishes for his sister and Avdol to be brought back to life. What does this tell us about Polnareff’s motivations? To put it simply, he’s motivated by guilt; though, you could argue that he’s motivated by love, as well, guilt takes the number one place by a long shot. He felt guilty about ‘letting’ Avdol die after starting a heated argument – Avdol went out of his way to save him from Centerfold and Hol Horse, and in Polnareff’s mind, all he did to repay that kindness was to let him die.
Countering Polnareff’s naivety, the genie Stand Judgement does not actually bring Avdol and Sherry (Polnareff’s sister) back, which is no surprise, but he does bring out crude, evil dopplegangers of them out to fight. There’s a long scene in which he laments letting Sherry go on that walk and become Centerfold’s prey (as Centerfold is later revealed to be her murderer) and attempts to reconcile with the fake Sherry concocted by Judgement. As difficult as this scene is to read or watch, it tells a lot about Polnareff’s personality and feelings. He eventually realizes after a while that Judgement’s creations are not real, and are not actually reincarnated friends and family but instead a ruse to trick him. He receives a surge of confidence and strength upon this discovery, and Avdol reveals himself to be alive, and in fact, the same friend Joseph said was on the island.

In other words, Joseph (and Jotaro and Kakyoin) knew Avdol was alive; Hol Horse’s bullet didn’t actually kill him. They didn’t tell Polnareff this, and instead waited to meet back up with Avdol on the island when the time was right, since Polnareff would have spilled the beans and the enemy Stand users would have known that Avdol was actually alive. It’s understandable that Polnareff would be upset at being excluded, and he was surprised that even Kakyoin didn’t tell him, but it was in everyone’s best interest to simply leave him out of the loop for a while.

Polnareff has a big mouth, which comes to no surprise. Upon seeing a pretty woman, he momentarily forgets about his mission to find Dio, and instead moves to flirt. This is seen at least once in the anime, and Joseph has to tell him to stop. Though he can get distracted, as proven here, he does have a strong motivation to see things through. Once Judgement was defeated, Polnareff finally felt at ease putting his sister’s death behind him, since he couldn’t change the past, and Centerfold did eventually die; Avdol being alive the entire time helped Polnareff overcome this, as well.

As a teammate, Polnareff is a challenge. Sure, he’s helpful, and he knows how to use Chariot well, but there are times when he decides to do his own thing for a while. A prime example of this is when he is tasked with delivering Anubis to the local police, but instead he decides to get a shave at a barbershop. Jotaro, being dragged along with him, has to sit and wait; he even comments that they need to take Anubis to the police, but Polnareff says he needs a break. This would be fine, except that Anubis ends up taking over the mind of the barber, and an obvious battle breaks out. There are several battles that could have been avoided if Polnareff didn’t succumb to his own superficial needs first, but the series wouldn’t be nearly as entertaining that way.

In short, Polnareff isn’t a bad person, but he has skewed motivations sometimes. He cares for those close to him, as proven when he thinks Avdol is dead, and when Kakyoin receives a gruesome injury from N’doul, as goes out of his way to comment to Joseph and Jotaro that he’s worried about his friend’s condition when they talk. When the situation calls for it (such as the first Anubis fight) he can be serious and powerful, but he definitely has a child-like demeanor when his basic needs aren’t met to his satisfaction, as he requires a clean bathroom and a hearty breakfast.

He’s definitely more complicated than he looks!

Abilities/Powers:
Polnareff, much like many of the characters in the Jojo universe, possesses Stand power. A Stand is, briefly put, a manifestation of energy and will in a physical form. Not everyone has a Stand, and those who do can have one of pretty much any power and size. Stands can only be seen by other Stand users, so Polnareff can see the Stands of others, and vice versa, but an average person cannot see his Stand.

Specifically, Polnareff’s Stand is Silver Chariot, whose name is usually simplified to Chariot. An interesting thing to note about this Stand is that Polnareff unleashed its power when he was a child, as shown during the Alessi/Set battle; in contrast, Jotaro didn’t discover his Stand ability until he was in his late teens. Polnareff having been aware of his Stand powers at such a young age may very well have caused him to form a deeper bond with Chariot, not to say Jotaro doesn’t have one with Star Platinum. Still, it’s definitely something to think about, given Polnareff’s years of experience in this field.

Describing Polnareff’s Stand is fairly straightforward, since Silver Chariot is a relatively tall (about 6’ or so) humanoid with a knight-like appearance. Chariot appears to wear a light suit of armor, which he can drop upon Polnareff’s command to make him even faster, and has done so several times in the manga/anime. Chariot’s other abilities are fairly straightforward; he uses a thin, sharp blade as his first and foremost form of offense, and as shown in episode 29, can wield a second blade if obtained during battle. When Chariot fights with his blade, he uses quick, fleeting swipes and jabs, leaving the enemy disoriented and at a disadvantage. Polnareff and Chariot’s ‘trump card’ is the sacrifice of the blade, which is seen in episode 28. This maneuver is dangerous, though, as Chariot cannot get the blade back until he’s summoned by Polnareff again, leaving him vulnerable for the duration of the battle.

Aside from Polnareff’s Stand abilities, he has an eye for spotting a clean restroom and fixing his hair without the use of hair gel or spray.

Items/Weapons:
Aside from the clothes he’s wearing, Polnareff will bring:
- A pack of cigarettes, since he smokes pretty heavily… unfortunately.
- A small bottle of cologne, which has a strong woodsy scent.
- A lighter for the cigarettes which he’s totally going to waste immediately.

Sample Entry:
[The flint wheel of a lighter clicks and a small flame spews forth. There’s a muffled cough as fingers bring a cigarette to the fire, and then immediately to his mouth. He takes a drag, and then speaks, almost hesitantly:]

This is my last one.

[Before anyone can register any hint of hesitation in those words, he speaks again, this time far more boisterous:]

I don’t have any more cigarettes! JOTARO! Hey, Jotaro!! Can you hear me? D’you have any cigs for me to borrow? I kinda went through all the ones I brought already, and you’ve been here a while, so you’ve gotta have some extras. Help a pal out!

[He takes another drag, a long sigh following behind. Hopefully this cigarette will last long enough…]

Sample Entry Two:
It had been a day since the fight with Alessi and Set. Polnareff had tried to keep the battle out of his mind, but doing so had proven difficult; however, he knew that there were more enemy Stand users to face, and probably very soon, so he took to thinking about other things whenever he began to recollect. Problem was, if he didn’t think about that fight, he tended to think about something relatively asinine, such as whether the next bathroom he’d have to use was clean enough or not. He didn’t believe that was an asinine thought, but everyone else seemed to. It didn’t make much sense to him, though, since using a dirty bathroom was equivalent to eating off of a dirty plate, you just didn’t do it.

That evening proved to test that equivalency, despite all protests from Silver Chariot’s wielder; the group, sans Kakyoin, were to board a ship to Cairo in an effort to continue their journey, which was nothing too out of the ordinary. What was out of the ordinary, though, was how filthy the lone toilet on the ship was. It looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in months, what with an unidentifiable crust caked on the porcelain and all.

He wasn’t using it, there was no way he would be able to use it. At least, he wasn’t going to use it in this state. Someone had to clean it. Polnareff wasn’t the type to really clean things himself, though, so after debating in his mind who to bother about this dire predicament, he placed a name to the task: Avdol.

“Hey, Avdol! Come check out this toilet! It’s really interesting!”

This would definitely work, he just needed to convince Avdol to clean the toilet somehow and then he’d be able to actually go. The plus side being that he wouldn’t have to do the dirty work himself, which would make using the toilet that much more satisfying. He simply remained outside the bathroom door, waiting for his unsuspecting friend to arrive.

Background/History: Here & Here
half_wolf: (human - soft smile)

[personal profile] half_wolf 2015-03-20 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:
Out of all of Blue's traits the one that seems to show the most and is the easiest to see is how loyal she is. Once Blue has made a bond with someone it is nearly impossible to break and she would defend that person to the ends of the earth, which is close to what is happening in the series. Despite being unsure of whether or not the wolves really killed her master's and her family she still stays with him, helping him hunt down the wolves in order to get a kind of superficial revenge. Regardless of revenge or not, Blue wouldn't betray Quent even when he turned a gun on her, fearful she had hurt a boy. She was left a little in shock when he does however. It leaves her wondering why he would do such a thing when he only draws the guns on wolves. In a sense it can be felt that this might be when she began to question what she might really be. When she first meets Cheza these feelings of being more than a dog are fully awakened and the wolf inside of her is finally shown to her and then decides to finally leave the Quent unable to hunt wolves any longer. A small part can be felt that she is also afraid that since she knows what she is Quent might have some hidden hatred for her as well. Not able to deal with this possible emotional truth she goes to make a living on her own. Though she eventually joins the wolves her respect and love of her former owner was still strong enough that she wanted to try and protect him even from afar.

This also goes into how hard of a worker she is. Having been shown Blue isn't happy unless she is doing some form of work. Whether that is hunting or even scouting. She gets restless easily and needs something to pass her time. It's possible this is from being constantly on the move with Quent and being in one place too long makes her bored or anxious. She has a need to be working and won't be happy unless she is. Even if the work can be something as simple as fetching something for someone. Blue wants to work and be helpful to whoever she can be even to the point of wanting to repay someone’s kindness no matter what.

Because of the way she was raised Blue's another trait of hers that separates her from the other wolves to a degree is her love of humans. Blue was found and raised by Quent's son and him, so humans were all the family she ever knew. Even when she was found Quent assumed she had wolf in her, by her looks and size, even with that thought he still raised her and they became close partners. Blue has displayed this love of humans many times, especially towards children. Even taking a beating in order to protect a human boy she didn't even know. Blue can seem rather motherly because of these kinds of actions and while Toboe loves humans as well there is an almost childish connection for the younger wolf. Besides Hige, Blue really does feel a connection with Toboe because of their pasts with humans, though she tries to not get very close because of his connection with Tsume. When it comes to Tsume Blue knows they have had shaky beginning and with that she knows there is a degree of uneasy and trust with the two of them. She however tries to look beside that and follows the pack trying to show them all she is no longer hunting or leading hunters to them. However with all of her connections and love of humans she does feel a little out of place with the other wolves and isn’t sure she will be allowed into paradise. She feels that because she is only a half breed and has helped kill so many wolves with Quent she won't be allowed into paradise and will be left behind alone. There have been many point where she feels as though she weighs the pack down and that there is still a deal of uneasiness or distrust in her because of the pack and hers past encounters.

Another thing with Blue is the fact she knows that she is attractive in wolf and human form. Because of this she knows how to get things she wants from humans and even wolves, Hige for example. Using her feminine ways she will convince someone to help her but never going as far as to completely tricking the other, though close to it. She just knows that she has to do what she has to, to get something in this world and being on your own makes that even truer. Though this can also lead to her being rather sarcastic with people that are dumb or bad at flirting with her. Yet her biting sarcasm proves to only entice people more and want to get closer to her and past those comments, like Hige. Out of everyone in the pack though her closest connection would have to with Hige. Even when all the other members were ready to throw her aside and walk away from her, Hige followed after her and trusted her without a second thought. It’s this kind of trust and devotion that really caught her attention making her notice the other as more than just another wolf. Blue would do anything for Hige and follow him anywhere, a fact she tells him so many times. Even with her devotion and love for him she also knows he is loyal to members of his pack and even with her pleas for them to run away together she lets her thoughts fall to the side when he decides to keep with Kiba and the others. Instead going with them even though she knows her chances of getting into paradise are very slim.

Being a half breed she isn't sure if humans are more her kind or wolves are. She doesn't really fully belong to either and this can lead to her feeling of being alienated at times. Unable to choose where she should really go or where she will be left when they reach paradise. Despite this though she still tries her best to be in the pack and to help find paradise, some of this might be that she wants to make sure the others get in even if she doesn’t. Their world isn’t safe for wolves and if it saves Hige and the others she will gladly sacrifice herself and happiness to do so. Even with feeling as though she is an outsider she has a lot of respect for Kiba, their leader, even if she thinks he might be out of his mind at times. Since Kiba had gotten them out of a lot of potentially dangerous situations and led them to Cheza more than enough times to prove that he mostly knew what was doing. So she doesn’t really question him as greatly as members of the pack, like Tsume, at times. Blue wants to be near Cheza as well since ever since she first met her just being near the flower had given her mind such release and peace. It’s a feeling she has rarely ever known and she wants to grasp to it as long as she can. So Blue tries to protect the flower and help the pack get her to paradise at all costs. She wants to make sure Cheza is happy forever.

Fears:

A few fears that Blue has are losing her Pa (Quent), her friends, being separated from them, not being able to work, being left behind or to be hunted by her Pa. Once Blue makes a bond with someone it's strong and just the thought of being left without those people causes her a great amount of fear. The last thing she wants is to be left behind and alone with no one she knows with her. One thing that would be worse for her would to be hunted by the person she cares about most and who helped raise her, Pa. She can act like these things don't bother her and that she has a thick skin to them but in reality she is very insecure about it and just the thought alone is enough to depress her. Blue wants to be with everyone she cares for even new friends. So to be locked away or unable to be near them or to protect them would leave her heartbroken and unsure of what she can do. A big fear that she has since she is half wolf is that Pa will not even bat an eye to killing her and that she will die without anyone. A lot of her fears are really directed towards being alone or left behind.
Another one of her fears is that the people she loves will get hurt and she can do nothing to stop it or help. This can also lead to her being fearful of people she knows fighting not wanting the worse to happen and they all separate or leave.

Weaknesses:

Blue doesn’t quite understand humans in the sense of suddenly being one. Having been essentially a pet her whole life she is left at a loss of how to act around humans and anything but a pet. This leaves her a little vulnerable and unable to blend into normal people, depending more what she learned as a pet. Because of this she can also endanger the pack if anyone is hunting them and more times than not she would rather remain in her dog/wolf form than human, just because it makes more sense.
Another issue Blue has is that she has a temper. Up until she met Cheza she was allowed to express her aggression and was allowed to attack what she wanted. So with she gets into an annoyed or aggravated state her first instinct is to become violent. Many times not looking before she leaps and going on her baser instincts, to attack and ask questions later. Though this is greatly downgraded towards humans.

One other weakness of the wolf is her issues with bonding. Blue doesn't know where she really belongs and this can leave her at a loss of who she can trust or who will betray her. With humans she will be more wary but with other wolves she will be just as wary until she can tell they are not out to hurt her or alienate her.

A final weakness in her overwhelming fear of being left alone. Blue doesn't like it and will try all she can to prevent it from happening. Some of this is from the fact Quent's son, her real owner, died and left her alone with Quent she doesn't even want to experience that heartache again and tends to guard herself.

Abilities/Powers:
Mundane Strengths/Abilities:
Blue is an expert tracker and can find any scent or person she is asked to find. This was something she was trained for by Quent and she is proud of her ability to do this. She is also an amazing guardian and protector if she trusts and cares for you she would take a bullet to save your life and sacrifice her own.

Sensitivity/Magical Ability:
As far as Magical Abilities go Blue only has the one, like all wolves from wolf’s rain she has the ability to change her appearance in front of humans on her on whim. Making her appearance to seem to be human when she is in fact not, though when she is in human form she is human in all senses of the word even to touch. All of the wolves can choose when to use this magic but it can prove to be a little tricky for Blue since she is only half, so she tends to remain wolf more than human.

Items/Weapons: Collar, Clothes (when human), Leash
Sample Entry: Test Drive
Sample Entry Two:

In front of the doors a blue black dog lays still yet breathing softly. It's unclear if she is okay or not at first until her eyes slowly opened. Bright blue eyes blinked a few times trying to clear the sleepy haze from them. Her nose twitched softly as she tried to take in the scent of where she was. In a quick instant the dog jumped up to her feet, head turning back and forth furiously she now knew this wasn't where she was before. Ears perked and alert Blue took in all the sounds that this place could produce few as they were. So odd. None of this was familiar to her. Blue had never been in a place like this one before. All she can recall was one moment she was on her own leaving her master... her Pa. Next she was in front of these massive doors. Had she been caught? It wouldn't surprise her after she discovered the wolf part of her thanks to Cheza. Though...this was too different from being caught if it was that simple she would be in a cage, right?

A small whine left her as she turned to scratch at the large doors in some hope they might click open. The ability of hiding her form from humans and becoming more human was something she still had to get down. All she had for now was her original form. With the scratches and pushes to the door being unsuccessful she turned away from them, tail rose to scare off anything that might threaten her. It might be best to have a look around if she ran into trouble she could always fight. Giving the door a final look she turned and started to walk down the hallway. Ears perked high on her head she made sure to listen to every sound this place had to offer. If she was lucky maybe she would find someone that lived here that wouldn’t try to kill her for what she was…

Requested apartment: With Kuvira anywhere is fine

Character Name: Baatar Junior Beifong

Canon: Legend of Korra

Canon Point: End of episode 11 book 4: "Kuvira's Gambit"

Background/History: http://avatar.wikia.com/wiki/Baatar_Jr. (For some reason the period cuts off but its part of the url.)

Personality: Baatar has always been a hard worker. Dedicated to his work, often over working himself. Growing up in Zaofu he worked with his father, the first time meeting him, he is seen skipping dinner with his father to work. Papers flying behind him, obviously working hard. In fact the only meal we see Baatar at is the farewell dinner for his sister. He is then seen watching her leave before he is not shown for the rest of that season.

This constantly working seemed to grate on him greatly. When he returns home for the first time in three years. His parents ask him to come home which then he bitterly rebuffs trying saying he doesn't want to be in his parent's shadow, mainly his father.

His mother believes that Kuvira 'brainwashed' him into going with her. But Baatar went out left on his own.

While he seems to harbor resentment with most of his family he has a soft spot for Opal. He was happy to see her when he first sees her again after the three year gap. He asks how their mother is doing. He obviously still after everything loves his family. While she isn't happy to see him, he keeps a cheerful attitude towards her. This is shown later by him panicking realizing his little sister is in harms way from his weapon test.

Over the years with Kuvira he has become remorseless when it came to dealing with others. He was quoted saying how he was "Ready to take Zaofu by force." Zaofu was his home where he was born and raised and didn't leave up until three years prior. His family other than his sister was also there. After two bad run ins with his colder family members he becomes more standoffish and rude towards them. He is more than willing to mock them openly.

He is willing to harm people physically he isn't related to (like Varrick.) Baatar will hurt people to get what he wants. He threatens to harm Varrick if Zhu Li and Bolin don't give themselves up. But at the same time he doesn't want to harm his family. Despite all the resentment he has for them. When they wouldn't bend to Kuvira's will he ordered them locked up, not harmed.

He runs on a short fuse and will lash out if things do not ho his way or he is embarrassed. Such as his brother and father refusing to bow to Kuvira. He has a temper and will fuss and yell at those around him to let off his frustrations.

When he doesn't like someone he will mock their intelligence and threaten them. This is shown by him insulting Varrick more than once when he forced the man to work on the weapon. His respect could get no lower. He also shows little respect for his then Future King. But at the same time he is aware he needs Varrick if he wants to know how the spirit vines can be used to harness power. Thus deals with him, just insults him the whole time.

Baatar is an asshole, there is no ignoring this. He does still seem to have a softer side, to an extent. At one point Kuvira tossed another character violently towards him. Rather then letting her fall, he caught her and helped her stand. This right after finding out the character had betrayed him and made two attempts to destroy his weapon. He was also wanting all of his workers to leave the platform when there was a chance that his weapon could explode. He stays behind to deactivate it while everyone runs.

He is warned that the weapon will explode yet he stays behind to try and stop it from exploding. Putting himself in danger to do so. It shows how stubborn he is.

Baatar is a brilliant engineer he was able to come up with a weapon from Varrick's vague explanation and take it a step further by harnessing the Spirit energy into a weapon. He also designed and created the Colossus that Kuvira later uses to destroy the city. This shows how dedicated he is to the cause. He believes they are working to create a better Earth Empire. He knows he is smart though, having tossed that in Varrick's face as well. Making him a rather full of himself as well, but he can deliver results.

He is was madly in love with Kuvira. Everything he has done up until that point during the three years gap was for her. He built her weapons of mass destruction. He is quotes saying "I devoted my life to her." It was all for her, while no Kuvira didn't brainwash him into coming with her. There was probably a small part of him that went with her because of who she is, not so much her plans for reuniting the Earth Kingdom.

His love for Kuvira is eventually his down fall. After their reasoning with him fails, Korra threatens to take Baatar far away from Kuvira so he can never see her again, if he doesn't surrender. His own mother begged him to give up his campaign with Kuvira and he didn't bat an eye even when she began to cry. This is a man who had just looked his crying mother in the face and told her her off. Yet the idea of loosing Kuvira scared him so much, he was willing to give up the whole campaign to stay with her.

He is shocked when he is nearly killed by the woman he loves. After that he is heart broken and basically goes crawling back to his family once Kuvira tries to kill him. He then helps Korra and team Avatar by telling them the weakness to his weapon, regretting what he has built.

Abilities/Powers: Baatar is what in the world of Avatar is called "A non bender" meaning he cannot bend the elements. What he lacks in bending abilities he makes up for in brilliant at engineering and science. He built weapons for his then fiancee, Kuvira. He is also skilled operating heavy machines being able to pilot a mecha suit easily.

Items/Weapons: His pair of glasses and his uniform

Sample Entry Two: He spent half the time wondered if he had died, and this was his own personal hell. This place, these people, this town. It was all- just so closed off. It felt a lot like growing up in Zaofu in the way he was trapped. Always being watched, nothing was personal, nothing was secret.

It was suffocating.

He wanted out, he wanted to go back home. He missed his-Mother, his brothers...his sister. Probably worst of all, he missed her she betrayed him, yet he still found himself wondering if she was alright. Stupid he knows, he belittles himself enough.

He had to focus on the task at hand, he needed a way to get out of here. He had already noticed there were no real exits in or out of this town.

One thing he had taken up was keeping to himself. Keeping himself, alive? He wasn't even sure anymore. But what he did know is he had no allies here, he didn't know anyone. But at the same time, he was making sure not to make any eye contact with these people. He was half worried someone will know his face.

He didn't have anyone to protect him now.

Nobody could fight his battles, and while he isn't the weakling he was years prior. He couldn't take on some of the people he had seen here. No, all he could focus on was not crossing paths with anyone who might do him harm.

Character Name: Levi
Canon: Attack on Titan
Canon Point: Chapter 61
Background/History: Wikia
Personality:
There are a number of things one could assume about a person with the lofty title of "humanity's strongest." Levi is basically none of them.

From the beginning, it's easy to see he's not your typical "hero" character. First, there's the immediately obvious: he's small. He looks disgruntled and sleep-deprived almost all the time. We have literally never seen him smile. He has a difficult personality as well: he speaks brusquely and often makes rude remarks - he curses frequently and tends to use informal/disrespectful speech. However, it's quite a bit easier to understand his personality when you learn where he came from. He lived most of his life in what is essentially a giant garbage can. A good portion of that time was spent being the protégé of a serial killer. The chances that one would emerge from such experiences as a normal, upstanding individual are pretty low.

Perhaps due to growing up in an underground slum, he's very neurotic when it comes to cleanliness: he's the very definition of a neat-freak. In fact, this is one of the first things we learn about him when he is introduced: after dispatching a titan or two, Levi notices he has blood on his hand and blade and immediately stops to wipe it off with a handkerchief, despite the fact that titan blood evaporates after a short time. Later in the story, when his squad arrives at the old Survey Corps headquarters, Levi wastes no time giving his first order: the place is filthy and he won't be having any of that, and immediately divides up responsibility for whipping it back into shape.

He places a very high priority on the chain of command and expects his subordinates to be competent and obedient (though he does acknowledge personal choice at certain times). If he's being a dick to someone below his rank, it's probably not because of that, but rather because that's just his default disposition. The strict nature with which he commands his current squad is for their own good and not because of any bloated sense of power. Even having that power, it's just not in his character to flaunt or abuse it. As for those who outrank him, he holds himself to the same standard: while he sometimes protests at first, he always follows orders from the commander of the Survey Corps, Erwin Smith. Levi does not have any particular talent for strategy, and he fully acknowledges this.

That said, despite his 2/10 official "teamwork" score (see abilities section), Levi is not that terrible of a leader. His original squad respected him immensely, and it wasn't just because of his reputation. He's not a lenient squad leader by any means, but neither is he flippant or disrespectful towards those he outranks. My interpretation of this score is that it's more representative of him actually working in a team, as opposed to leading one—unlike his first squad who worked together quite well, Levi tends to veer off and deal with things on his own. He does this even when he is leading a team, but only if he knows the others can handle it and/or he has no other choice; abandoning his squad is never a preferred course of action.

Mentally, his greatest strength is keeping a cool head in sticky situations, which is good since he's pretty much always in a sticky situation. The flip side of that is a perpetual state of emotional constipation, which lends itself heavily to him being an unpleasant person. He's not 100% ice queen all the time, but if you're looking for a shoulder to cry on, you might want to look elsewhere. Essentially, his personality is his greatest weakness—he has very few desirable traits and he isn't in any rush to change that. I mean, what's the point of being a friendly person when most of your friends are dead, right?

Add all these things up and it looks like a recipe for a fairly unpleasant person. It's true that he is tough to be around, and that he seems like an asshole on the surface. However, while he may seem to dislike people in general, he does not undervalue human life. While Erwin is more of the belief that the end justifies the means, Levi is far less tolerant of what is often little more than sending soldiers off to die, even if they’ve consciously joined the Survey Corps and thus “dedicated their hearts” to humanity. It’s for the same reason that he doesn’t act recklessly—he has lost countless comrades to titans, after all. Despite the hefty title of humanity's strongest, it's important to note that he isn’t prideful about it. He's perfectly aware of his own capability, but he isn't cocky.

This is a complex character who isn't always painted in a complex way. He's not just the stoic warrior guy, or the potty-mouthed bad boy, or the strict disciplinarian captain. Under a prickly (but squeaky-clean!) exterior, there is a genuinely good guy - sometimes you just have to squint to see him.

(Get it? It's a short joke.)

Abilities/Powers:

Levi’s stats are a bit ridiculous, as you can see. The combat rating is based primarily on proficiency with the Three-Dimensional Maneuver Gear (3DMG), which is the somewhat complicated contraption used to fight titans. See this handy illustrated diagram!

The main thing to report here is that Levi is pretty much universally considered to be the best at using the 3DMG, and thus the best at killing titans. He's very quick, and his small stature lends itself well to this particular kind of combat. Beyond being exceptionally skilled at this (and fairly proficient at hand-to-hand combat as well, though this is not a very valuable skill in fighting giant, regenerating meat-monsters), Levi does not have any sort of extra-human abilities.

Items/Weapons: 3DMG, flintlock handgun, extra uniform
Sample Entry: Action thread!

Sample Entry Two:
Thinking about it, it wasn't really so strange that Levi often preferred the company of animals over other people. There was something to say for sharing a space with someone who doesn't do all the annoying things that people do. A cat wouldn't spend an entire evening yapping about her latest science project. A bird wouldn't need to ask a million stupid questions up to and including whether he had permission to go take a leak. Dogs… well, dogs were a little too friendly and dependent, but still preferable to quite a number of people he'd met. (Plus, there was all the licking - no thanks.)

He owed a lot to his horse. Horses, too, asked zero questions, which was especially nice considering the "adventures" this one had been on, and would likely keep going on. It didn't even sign up for this. It didn't "offer its heart to humanity." Still, even though his specialty usually required him to dismount first, Levi knew there had probably been numerous times when he would have been in trouble if it weren't for having such a good horse. He'd even told his squad, back in the forest after switching to the maneuver gear but before everything went to hell - "take care of my horse."

The horse made it back. The others didn't.

He thought about them whenever he saw their horses, too. Of course, they were all ridden by other people now, but that wasn't so strange, either, was it? How many times had this happened before? Sometimes even the horses themselves didn't make it back. Sometimes nothing came back at all, and it was like the person never even existed. Somehow it made it all worse, having nothing to return to their families. Times like those, he would put his vague dislike of people in general aside. If there was one thing they all had in common, it was this. Everyone knew someone like that: eaten, crushed, buried in the rubble. Times like those, he remembered that despite how insufferable people could be, and how terrible they often treated each other, it was still humanity he always fought for in the end. He had offered his heart to humanity. It's just that, as of yet, he'd always been one of the lucky ones who got away while it was still beating.

The horse snorted, and the present came back into view. He'd been lost in thought, absent-mindedly patting his horse's head. It didn't happen often. He told himself he was probably just overly tired. Yeah, that must have been it. A good night's sleep would clear his mind, surely.

It was then that he received a grim reminder of one key advantage humans had over horses, and that was that horses shit wherever they want. And this one just had.

Gross.

Yoon | Akatsuki no Yona | Reserved

[personal profile] echinacea 2015-03-20 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:

On a basic level, Yoon is a mother hen. He cooks, he cleans, he sews and mends all his fellow travelers's injuries, but beyond that, he's the voice of reason. When a stupid idea crops up, he's the one to shoot it down and offer up something new. Something logical. While he's not the leader of the bunch, he's definitely the right-hand man-a position he grew into rather than took immediately.

Upon first meeting, Yoon is not a very social boy. He's rude and prickly, dismissive of others and their obligations. Very much a street brat, he lives through slyness and uses fairly underhanded practices. Despite his weakenesses, he has confidence to spare, sometimes bordering on conceit (he labels himself "genius pretty boy" way too much). Starting out as a pretty selfish boy, his world slowly broadens as he's given more people to care about.

The first person to get close to him was Ik-Soo, a guardian only by definition. In truth, Yoon was his guardian, tending to his wounds, whereabouts and needs from a young age. For him, Ik-Soo was the first person who could be trusted. So harmless and so incapable was he that it was hard not to be protective of him. So, they lived together for years with Ik-Soo coming and going and Yoon waiting and tending to his needs when he returned. Even though he was the caretaker, Yoon depended on Ik-Soo as well, not just for comfort but simply to return. For once, it was nice not to be alone.

When Yona came, he grew defensive. He disliked her for her heritage and, more than that, feared having to leave the stability he had established. Growing up in a village forgotten by its government, Yoon lived a tumultuous life filled with starvation, poverty and desperation. He lived his life by the day, unsure if he would survive the next. The future was uncertain and circumstances were rough. He coped how he could: by not trusting others. Ik-Soo was the only exception and, at the time, he was determined to let no one else gain the same status. Based on how he viewed himself, it's likely he saw other people as a burden. Another mouth to feed, another body to protect when the situations they lived in were already hard enough. It felt risky and Yoon, both at that time and in the present, feels most comfortable when he's far away from risk.

It's clear that Yoon considers himself a coward. Whether or not he is one is a matter that grows with character development but even still, his own opinion never changes. He views himself as weak and dismisses his own efforts to change as not good enough. A genius at everything, Yoon is used to things coming naturally. He's used to being good at the first try and meeting something that he can't perfect naturally seems too big a feat to conquer. He's a defeatist, through and through.

Still, he tries. He wants to be different from the suspicious, paranoid survivor he once was and a large part of that was inspired by his relationship with Yona. Like him, she was weak and "useless", unable to do anything that might help the rest of the group. Still, she tried and improved, if gradually, to become a significant archer in her own right. Furthermore, she would never be satisfied to let everyone else do the hard labor. If someone else was fighting, she would too. Just in her own way. That strength inspired him. There was no difference between them, no reason why he couldn't follow in her footsteps. So he tried, in his own way. He helped out where he could, healing strangers he usually wouldn't have and slowly opening his heart to let more and more people in.

In the end, Yoon is best when he has people to take care of. Though he puts on a prickly, grumpy front, his heart is too large to stop caring for people. Whenever the group comes to a new village where people need help, Yoon is usually the first to rush to their sides. He helps the poor without charge or care, his priority being their health, not the payment. This changes when he comes across someone of wealth and his usual disdain slips in, still treating them but usually demanding a charge.

Soft-hearted as he is, it shouldn't be a surprise that Yoon is a surprisingly emotional guy. He's a sap and is pretty easy to tear up, crying when he's worried, happy, or sad. He's the type of guy that would cry in every Disney movie and then insist he hadn't when later asked about it.

Basically, Yoon tries to act tough, fails, and helps people anyway. He's a naturally wary person who's quicker to suspect than he is to trust but those he does let in earn his loyalty for good.

Abilities/Powers: Yoon is a self-titled genius. Basically, he has the ability to memorize all information given to him and then... somehow be an expert at it. He's a medic, a cook, a seamster, a bombmaker, a trapper, and the list goes on and on. The one thing he isn't is a fighter.

Items/Weapons: (1) tattered book on medicine, (1) bag full of medical supplies, (1) outfit of his usual clothes

Sample Entry Two:

Lying on his back in his rotting shack, he had dreamed of libraries. Freshly pressed spines standing to attention in silent colonnades, sternly watching over solemn visitors. He had imagined what it was like to enter, to walk into a sanctuary of knowledge, and failed. A pitiful life like his own had little to compare to such an overwhelming sensation. It only made the yearning worse and now—now it was finally within his grasp.

He had heard of the obstacles, of course. A long stretch of tunnel filled with monsters of various sorts. Try as he might to get a catalogue of descriptions, his efforts were met with frustration. There were simply too many and too much dismissal. A taste of his own medicine, no doubt.

Usually, it'd be enough to dissuade him. Usually, it'd be enough to make him turn back. But this was different. This was a library. The stuff of dreams. Not even monsters could dissuade him from that wealth of knowledge.

He had thought of taking one of the dragons, of course. He had his ways of convincing them. No dinner was an easy choice. Yet every time he found himself in front of them, the words fell short and his tongue felt clogged. The request would never come. Likewise, he had thought of taking Yona, but that was dismissed even faster than the others. This was his dream and some crazy part of him insisted that he should be the one to fulfill it.

So here he was, standing at the cusp of darkness, fists clenched to keep from trembling. Stupidly, he hadn't brought a weapon, for reasons that had seemed logical when he left and felt like the worst mistake now. Even if he couldn't use it, it would at least be something more than a bag of herbs and dried meat. He felt naked, bare, completely doomed and every bone in his body wanted to run.

Instead, he stepped in.

The tunnel was eerily silent and somehow that made things worse. A sense of dread crept up his spine, spreading shivers like a web. But it was fine. It was good. So long as he stuck to the edges, lined the sides, he'd be fine. A small comfort, but the only one he had.

Heart in his throat, he inched his way forward. The tunnel grew darker and his footsteps, quiet as he kept them, echoed in roars. It became a pattern—shuffle forward, hear the echoes, stop till they quiet. It was slow, but it seemed to work. To a point.

It was when the darkness was consuming and the light of the entrance was a mere pinprick that he heard shuffling rival his own. A groan slipped from the darkness, low, wet and completely inhuman. It froze Yoon, his feet cementing themselves to the ground. Run, he should run. Turn and flee the way he had come. It was only natural. Men could only do so much and he was no exception. If he was spotted, smelled, or sensed in whatever abnormal way, he'd be doomed. Dead in a tunnel with nothing more than a name and petty accomplishments.

The creature shuffled closer and he could smell it now, the pungent smell of rotting flesh attacking him in waves. He wanted to bend over, puke, run, leave, but still his legs wouldn't move. With a panicked whimper he hit at his legs with balled up fists, as if beating them would bring them to life. It did, though not the way he wanted. He crept forward, barely breathing, as the creature meandered towards him. Steeling himself as best he could, he filled his empty mind with lies of confidence, I can do this and Just a bit furthers that evaporated instantaneously.

The monster was touching him, claws sinking into his arm in a slow caress. Yoon bit back a scream. Without thinking, he pushed at the monster, barely aware of it falling back as he turned and ran back to the light, back to safety. Back to Yona and the others.

He was a fool to think he could have ever been like them.
