Personality:

Ever since Nadeko was little, she had always possessed a shy, introverted and somewhat eccentric type of character. She hates being touched. She hates the warmth of other people's bodies. She never looks into the eyes of other people and she doesn't like it when they look into hers, using her hat and long bangs to shield herself from their stares. She keeps her head down when spoken to, and her replies are often soft, broken and mumbled. She refers to herself in the third person. There's a hint of nervousness and hesitation in her voice whenever she speaks up, which is a rare occurrence in itself - an indication that confidence and a sense of self are departments in which she truly lacks.

Perhaps it's because she isn't particularly good at anything, nor is she interested in topics most girls her age are. For example, she was once part of the softball club, but quit shortly afterwards because "it was too tiresome". Although she is the class representative, a job pushed onto her, she doesn't fulfill any of her responsibilities. Her conversations with Koyomi are often riddled with obscure references to manga from thirty years ago, but that may stem from how she is easily amused. Because of her inability to make conversation, her pessimism, low self-esteem and lack of motivation, it is a shame for such a cute girl to not have friends at all.

Nadeko Sengoku doesn't have many friends. She has no one to rely on but herself. She consciously chooses not to rely on anyone but herself, wishing that people would give up and go away. Her inferiority complex leads her to believe that it is better if people do not worry about her. She doesn't want to trouble them. She can handle her problems on her own. Tsubasa Hanekawa herself comments that Nadeko's independence is one of her strengths. However, in Otorimonogatari, many characters foreshadow her timidity as a flaw that will not save her. Earlier in the series, Nadeko attempts to remove her curse by herself as she keeps silent about the pain she feels as it constricts her body, but in the end, she cannot save herself in time alone.

But what if?

What if she wanted to be saved by someone else after all? All throughout the series, she keeps hoping, hoping that certain someone will save her as he always did.

Thus, it is no surprise that she treasures the moments when she meets people who are genuinely kind to her.

Among the few people Nadeko had gotten to know in her life, if one asked her who among them stood out the most, she will, without a doubt, answer, "Koyomi onii-chan". Koyomi Araragi and his younger sister, Tsukihi Araragi or "Rara-chan", were both her playmates long before she entered junior high. Nadeko knew Tsukihi from school, but she came to admire Koyomi for his kindness, which she still remembers clearly after all those years, so clearly that she rejects other boys who confess to her because of him. Knowing his gentle and kind nature, she does not hesitate to ask for his help when she needs it the most. Nadeko deeply trusts him, and while Tsukihi believes that Nadeko's feelings are only there because she is "too innocent" and doesn't know many people, Nadeko has loved him more than anyone else for the longest time.

For Koyomi, there are are many things Nadeko would do that no girl her age normally thinks of doing for the person she likes. Appear scantily clad in front of him in her own room, for example. Strip in front of him in his own room, for example. But while her admiration for Koyomi is presented as a harmless crush in the first season of Bakemonogatari, Nadeko is incapable of accepting reality and handling her emotions regarding him. For Nadeko, loving someone is a way to make her feel better. Thus, she may have fallen in love with anyone who showed kindness to her. Koyomi just happened to be there.

Nadeko likes Koyomi so much that she is happy as long as she can stay by his side. She feels jealous of even Shinobu, who fights alongside him. But when she finds out about his girlfriend, Hitagi, her obsession heightened and everything goes downhill. Instead of giving up, Nadeko is unable to accept that Koyomi loves someone else and cannot be with her anymore. She feels resentment towards Hitagi and, having no one else to talk to, she constricts herself with her own emotions until they drive her crazy. Nadeko goes great lengths to take what she has pined for so long. She leaves her one wish in the hands of an oddity - in reality, a mere delusion of hers. With this, she becomes an irredeemable monster and attempts to kill Koyomi. Her strength came from love and love disappeared. When her heart broke, her whole world did.

The Nadeko arriving in Haven will be from a time well before all is revealed to her, but who's to say that won't happen? For now, she'll be that shy girl in the corner wearing a large hat covering her eyes, biting her lip as she worries about how to escape.

(I have two samples for this in case one doesn't show enough! I wrote this one for percaligovideo but it's a rather normal one as far as settings go.)

The snakes slithered as they slathered a slimy substance across the linoleum, crossing over the mixture of soil and water from the other broken glass cages. The event took place not too long before Nadeko arrived at the scene, so by looking at the state of the pet shop, it wasn't difficult to imagine the chaos earlier. Then again, she did remember seeing a scuffle earlier. Maybe it had something to do with that? This place was more dangerous than she thought it would be. Right now, her mind was preoccupied with the creatures crawling on their bellies like the lesser lifeforms they are. She came here with the intention of purchasing a rodent in mind, but when a snake began to swallow a rabbit, she shut her eyes, left the shop and ran across the street.

After those curses placed on her, snakes have always seemed to possess some ill will towards Nadeko. In a panic, she felt her neck, checked her arms and legs - no scale markings. True enough, she hadn't angered anyone yet. Besides, Inaba was far, far away from charms, curses and shrines surrounded by oddities. Things from her home world shouldn't have to bother her anymore, right? She doesn't want to be a burden to anyone, anger anyone or experience that much pain again. But at the same time, there's a tiny part of her that wants herself to get hurt, if it means Koyomi will come to rescue her...

When will that time come? she wondered. Whenever it was, it was clear to her that she will have to do her best to hold up on her own. She was used to that. Taking in a deep breath, Nadeko looked back at the chaotic pet shop, feeling brave enough to face the snakes of this world. One blink later, from the corner of her eye, she swore she saw this - a snake bared its teeth at her, and as if it was looking at its next meal, smiled.

(This was written with virtualimmersion's setting in mind, but I believe it stays true to her character!)

Death.

To be honest, Nadeko's never thought about it. Who makes an ordinary fourteen-year-old girl think about such a thing in this day and age?

For a girl in a safe neighborhood with today's medical advancements and her family's economic status, there wasn't anything to fear. For her entire life, a cautious girl like Nadeko never ran into any sort of danger. Even so, you couldn't say she was happy. For a girl in a school where she had no friends and no strength to fight back, there wasn't anything to look forward to. For her entire life, a timid girl like Nadeko never ran into any sort of miracle. Even so, you couldn't say she was unhappy.

But like any other person, if given the choice between life and death, wouldn't living be the obvious answer? It's human instinct to survive. One might argue (and it's possible that Nadeko has thought of this before): what was the point of being if she was unsure of her own existence herself? The inability to reach out and affect others only cripples her and closes her world. Wouldn't it be better if she had not lived at all? Nadeko thought this: putting an end to her life was troublesome. The erasure of her existence might relieve others, but her disappearance from this world will only stop her from seeing that person.

Upon hearing of her possible fate in Aincrad, the desire to see the sole important person in her life burned brightly once again. It may have been a flame back then, but now it's there, a little more certain of its existence. Existence proves itself by its intense fire - the heat makes her heart jump as the flame flickers. Nadeko holds her chest before it starts hurting, tightening and spinning out of control. That was the moment when these sentiments were just as crystal as she had hoped.

Alone, she is weak, but that's fine. Alone, she doesn't burden anyone. She wasn't sure of who she was, but she was sure of what she wanted. The will to live was right here. She just had to act on it.

"Nadeko has to see him..."

The paradise she aims for awaits.
