Personality: At heart, Kusaribe Hakaze is a kind, compassionate, and considerate woman; each of these traits are displayed in her desire to help those around her, honor their feelings and wishes, and in her willingness to deny her own feelings for the sake of others. Along with these, Hakaze believes in atoning for her sins, fulfilling promises, and repaying debts, even if it means giving up her life to do so.
Hakaze has a strong sense of duty and responsibility. With her role as the Princess of Beginning, she is the only being capable of fully reviving the clan’s god, the Tree of Beginning, and the only one capable of defending against its rival, the Tree of Zetsuen. The Kusaribe clan’s duty to protect the laws of the world set forth by their god is inborn to Hakaze and she has a strong desire to protect those around her at all costs, even if it means sacrificing herself. However, if pushed far enough in extreme circumstances, Hakaze is willing to disregard her calling in order to prevent personal tragedies from occurring in the lives of those precious to her. As a result, she can be swayed by her emotions, and if she believes strongly enough in her conviction, Hakaze can become angry beyond consolation and let her headstrong determination drive her to accomplish her goal. She has admitted that her emotions have some control over her actions and stated that it was a possibility that she may kill Fuwa Aika in a jealous rage because of their mutual affections for Takigawa Yoshino.
However, as well-mannered and intentioned as she may seem, Hakaze is far from a divinely-chosen saint in personality. As the Princess of Beginning, she is well-aware of the favor the Tree of Beginning shows her and displays absolute confidence in her power as the self-proclaimed strongest magician in history. She knows very well what she is capable of and believes that there is nothing she can’t do once she decides it. Hakaze believes that her very presence on a battlefield would ensure her victory and that her power is greater than the combined strength of hundreds of fellow Kusaribe magicians. As the leader of the Kusaribe clan, she is quick to display her authority over other clansmen; once she gives an order, she expects it to be followed without question, even demanding that she be obeyed. Further expressing her self-entitlement and authority, Hakaze uses the pronoun 'kisama,' which is regarded as extremely hostile and rude, by default with nearly everyone. Likewise, all clan members refer to her as 'hime-sama.'
Though she can be annoyed at times with being treated as such, she does take her title of princess seriously. Normally, Hakaze tries to act in a solemn and authoritative way, even speaking in a proper manner one could expect from a princess, although there are also times when she fails to do this. Hakaze is unafraid to speak her mind and often has outbursts where she will raise her voice in protest, or where she’ll find fault in something someone has said and point it out to them. Likewise, Hakaze has been known to display impulsive or outlandish actions, such as delivering a flying kick to a stranger because of a bad feeling, or attacking a car carrying fellow Kusaribe members, just so they would stop and pick her up. To add, she found neither of those to be out of the ordinary. Hakaze also isn’t above using others to meet her ends, as shown with her enlistment of total strangers to assist with her plots.
Having been born as its princess and avatar, the Tree of Beginning has blessed Hakaze with divine fortune and has protected her from all hardships since birth. Hakaze’s luck and will are able to influence circumstances and put her in situations that will work to her advantage. For example, if she were in desperate need of a particular object, the Tree’s power would present it to her. She rightly believes that if she were to desire something strongly enough, the Tree would notice her feelings and manipulate reality in a way that would benefit her and ultimately grant her wishes.
Because of her protection, Hakaze is a somewhat sheltered individual, having never experienced difficulty, serious pain, or even something simple like stiff muscles. She is often overly optimistic and she’s accustomed to having things go her way. As a result, Hakaze has great determination and very little sense of fear or danger; she is willing to attempt precarious and exceedingly difficult tasks because she whole-heartedly believes the Tree of Beginning will protect her in all endeavors. Similarly, Hakaze is unafraid to destroy property or sacrifice a limb to prove a point, knowing that it can easily be regenerated with magic.
Her inexperience with things most had learned at an early age resulted in her behaving in a rather childish, almost tsundere way when she fell in love with Yoshino. At the time her feelings emerged, Hakaze was oblivious as to why she felt the way she did until it was explicitly pointed out to her. As a girl experiencing her first love, Hakaze became very nervous around Yoshino and chose to both hide and rid herself of her feelings as best as possible. She feared that her intense feelings would prompt the Tree of Beginning to kill his girlfriend for her, although her attempts to move on resulted in her falling more deeply in love. After the identity of Yoshino’s girlfriend was revealed to be the Fuwa Aika she'd heard mentioned so much, Hakaze was plagued with an intense sense of guilt and wondered if her eventual love had been foreseen by the Tree and was the reason Aika had been killed a year earlier.
Despite some of her flawed personality traits, Hakaze did gain some perspective and a bit of humility after meeting Yoshino. The events that transpired since their meeting showed her that her power may not be as absolute as she once thought, and Hakaze began to take a more active lead of her life and surroundings, rather than having reality and situations bent to her whims.
