Character Name: Izumo Kamiki
Canon: Ao no Exorcist
Canon Point: ch. 26, after rescuing Rin
Background/History: AnE WIKI

Personality: Izumo is often described as a tsundere – that is, someone who can appear very cold and callous one second, and then very soft and caring in the next. But rather than alternating between the two distinct personalities, Izumo instead takes great pains to maintain that hard, thick-skinned persona of a young woman who couldn’t really care less about what anyone does and thinks about her.

From a young age, Izumo had been shunned by her peers, thought of as weird and mocked her because of her abilities to sense and interact with demons. Accepting this, Izumo then spent most of her childhood keeping only to herself and paying little attention to others around her. However, some time in her elementary school days, one of her classmates, Paku, decided to reach out to her despite their other classmates’ warnings, and the two have been the best of friends since then. This did not, however, encourage Izumo to start reaching out to people, or to start forgiving them for their cruel treatment of her. Indeed, she continued to remain closed off to most others, and only carefully stretched her range of value from just herself to her only other friend.

For the most part, Izumo is harsh, stubborn, haughty, and brutally honest. She doesn’t go out of her way to speak very often, but when she does talk, she doesn’t hold back. She is a loud-mouth when prompted, and among her peers she doesn’t bother to censor herself. Hardened from that childhood of hearing taunt after taunt, degrading whisper after degrading whisper, Izumo doesn’t fear any words that might be thrown back at her… to an extent. When Bon made the comment, “You really are a nasty piece of work,” Izumo readily and nonchalantly retorted with, “I’m perfectly aware of that, thank you, and?” But when he went on to say how that sort of attitude would drive people away, she paused and looked considerably affected by it. Before that, she had had a private confrontation with Paku, who had essentially told her the exact same thing about her attitude. Before then, it had never bothered Izumo – in fact, she seemed to prefer such a harsh attitude, since it kept most people far enough away that she wouldn’t ever have to listen to their whispers again – but after hearing her very own best friend express such sentiments, it had shattered her perceptions considerably. Since then, Izumo has been shown to slowly but surely open up a little more, as well as be a little more considerate in terms of her words and actions.

She is a very driven young woman, evidenced in her status as the class’ best student. Her self-confidence is a defining trait, which makes her a great candidate for a Tamer. She is honest to anyone who will listen (and sometimes to those who refuse to) and even to herself. Her self-preservation and confidence are what drives her, as well as her desire to grow strong enough to protect herself and those she cares about. She can be very antagonistic at times, rising easily to baits and just as easily casting them herself. Many of her class’ punishments have actually been a direct result from confrontations with other classmates she has either started or continued. She is simply too stubborn to back down and too haughty to let a perfectly good taunt slide.

Very few have been fortunate enough to see the softer side of her. As harsh and critical and unmerciful as she can be, she has also proven to be infallibly loyal and faithful to those she deems worthy of it. When Paku confessed wariness and reservations about remaining in the Exorcist Academy, Izumo was quick to vow to be strong and smart enough to protect them both. When their other classmates began to draw away from Rin after it was revealed that he was, in fact, Satan’s son, Izumo was the only one to sit beside him and treat him as she has always been. There are not many people that she allows herself to open up to, but to those that she has, she has proven to be just as protective of them as she is of herself.

Abilities/Powers: Izumo is what is known as a Tamer in her canon’s universe. Tamers are a classification of Exorcists that can summon and control demons using magical circles either drawn on the ground or on slips of paper, with the added application of the Tamer's blood. Tamers are said to be very rare among Exorcists, for not only do Tamers require natural skill, but they must also have strong spiritual fortitude in order to control the demons they summon. If at any time a Tamer lacks confidence or force of will, the demons can always turn on them. Though she is still technically an Esquire (that is, a student in Exorcist cram school who has passed the Esquire Authorization Exam, she has already proven to be a formidable Tamer. On her first try alone, she was able to summon and command two Kitsune demons, named Mike and Uke. She also possesses great skill and knowledge in their many uses, able to use the demons to fight, summon sacred wine, and complete other such tasks for her.

Sample Entry:
[ at first, a sound - soft and derisive, a mere exhalation of breath that sounds both unimpressed and concerned. a moment later, an image flickers on to the network, streaming a video broadcast live. it's a young woman, holding her cell phone out at arm's length, a deep frown set on her face before, a second later, she's breaking out into a high, girlish laugh. ]

Funny! Hilarious! Good job, you got me real good. [ and then her expression clears entirely, looking about as far from amused as a person can get. ] Is that what you want to hear?

[ did the temperature just drop around here...? ]

Joke's over now. I don't have time for whatever it is you think you're getting out of this. I have things to do, so cut it out before I make you.

[ she lets that sink in for a second before the video cuts off. ]

Sample Entry Two:
Once the video was over and Izumo was sure there was no one around to hear her, she let out a sharp, stifled whimper. Without the network seeing her, without any eyes to judge and consider her weak, she shivered, eyes darting around the quiet room she'd woken up to find herself in. It didn't look like any place she recognized, definitely nothing from Kyoto, or even the Academy.

An impromptu training session, maybe? No, that'd be stupid - they were in the middle of a crisis in Kyoto, and even if they were mere Esquires, every hand was necessary when it came to taking down - or at least containing - the Impure King.

It didn't make sense. She shouldn't be here. Yet here she was.

"...whatever." It didn't sound as convicted as she would have liked, but the intent was there. She might be stuck somewhere else right now, but like hell she was going to let it stay that way for long.
