Character Name: Mako Canon: Legend of Korra Canon Point: Mid point of End Game, before the final scenes. Background/History:LoK wiki Previous Game History: N/A Personality: Mako is a very serious person, being responsible for raising and protecting his brother from a very young age. Compared to Bolin’s easy going and flirtatious personality, Mako is distant and cold at first. He doesn’t tend to react well to people trying to get very close to him and Bolin, and it takes proving that they have something to offer him that would make it worthwhile. With Korra, it’s her ability to waterbend, which keeps them in the pro-bending tournament. With Asami, it’s that she’s charming, and willing to provide him food at a fancy restaurant for free, though it certainly didn’t hurt that she was willing to steamroll over any of his objections.
Mako is very dedicated and loyal to his brother, willing to go to any extreme to save him from his own stupidity, including impersonating Equalist supporters to try and save him. He tries to measure his advice with him, and tends to take Bolin’s outbursts in stride. He takes his responsibility as Bolin’s protector seriously. And he’s rather attached to the scarf that he wears, it being the last memento he has of his father. Wherever he goes, the scarf goes with him.
His control of his emotions is top notch, as he has the ability to lightning bend, which is an insanely difficult form of fire bending, and only those with the most control of their emotions can master it.
However, despite mastering control of his emotions, this does not necessarily mean that he has a good grasp on why he feels a certain way. Due to the lifestyle of poverty that he and his brother lived, Mako very often set aside his own wants and desires, as well as any reservations he had about what he was doing, to ensure that he and his brother were able to survive, even if not necessarily comfortably. So, what he has in control, he lacks almost completely in understanding.
This is especially noticeable when you look at his approach to his relationship with Asami and Korra—instead of realizing and acknowledging his feelings for Korra and having open and honest communication with Asami, he defaults to not wanting to deal with it until the ‘ideal time’ though he wouldn’t honestly be able to tell you when that ideal time is.
Abilities/Powers: Mako is a firebender, which means he can essentially create fire with various bending moves, that are usually based off of martial arts stances-- however Mako's personal style leans towards scrappy, and is based more on boxing than on the traditional firebending. Despite that, he has a lot of talent with firebending, and doesn't even have to perform bending moves to use his firebending.
He can use the 'breath of fire' ability, which is basically what it sounds like: breathing fire. He also is able to lightningbend, which goes back into the control of his emotions that he has. Lightningbending is extremely difficult to master, but Mako doesn't really have a problem with performing it, even if he does so only rarely, and when shocking someone is more effective than throwing fire at their faces.
He also has above average speed and strength. He shows no problem lifting his brother and carrying him back to the bending arena, even though his brother does have some significant muscle on him, but his key strength is really on his speed and flexibility. It's what his scrappy style attempts to maximize. Sample Entry:Sample 1, Sample 2, note this is memory loss'd Mako ;; Sample Entry Two: Mako exhaled, trying to recount the places that he could go to lose track of time for a few hours. But as he ticked them off, he had a reason to avoid them waiting in the wings. He ended up pissing off the owner of that club the last time he was there, a bar was out of the question since there was a match tomorrow, and lately his old haunts had Triads crawling everywhere, so it was better to just stay away. Unfortunately. He needed to avoid the places with gambling-- not because he was likely to gamble, but because it'd just put him in a worse mood than he already was in.
He rubbed his temples. He and Bolin really needed to work out a system for this rather than just finding out at the last second. If he could plan on Bolin's crazy fangirls being there, he wouldn't be stuck tracing a path through various neighborhoods in Republic City for a few hours, or at least a long enough time for said fangirl to go away.
Unfortunately, he was fairly certain Bolin didn't necessarily plan on finding someone every game. Mako paused. No, wait, he was the older brother. He could set some ground rules on this subject, right? No fangirls in the locker room.
... But that was an awkward conversation he wasn't sure he actually wanted to have. Great.
