Character Name: General Iroh. The Dragon of the West.
Canon: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Background/History: Canon Background / Iroh's background

Personality: Iroh is an old man; and like many cheese and wines, has only mellowed and grown better with age.

To some people he might seem lazy or overly flippant. He certainly enjoys life, taking little pleasures from wherever he can find them, even in the worst of time. For example; treating his exile as a vacation, or basking in the hospitality showed to him after he accidentally poisoned himself trying to make tea. This ability to see the glass as half full and take pleasure from small things, is something he tries to pass along to everyone around him. He organises music nights for the crew of Zuko's battleship, attempts to teach his nephew Pai Sho and occasionally even gently flirts with the women they come across.

The mistakes of his past and the loss of his son have taught him valuable lessons. While he was never a cruel man, nor an ambitious one (he allowed his younger brother to become Fire Lord without a fight); he was dedicated to his profession and loyal to the Fire Nation. While he still loves his homeland, he can now see the follies of their conquest. The victories of battle are no longer as important to him as the love of the people he cares for. His son, Lu Ten, died in battle and Iroh lost the will to succeed as a general. This grief is most likely what helped to shape him into the man he grew into, as it taught him to treasure life and family.

He is a man who loves very deeply, and who believes in showing kindness to everybody, no matter where they come from. He follows his nephew on a quest that almost leads to destruction, all the while trying to teach him to find his own path. He knows from his life and mistakes that the choices you make must be your own, because in the end only you have to live with the path you've chosen to walk. This love and kindness extends even to people who would want to hurt him, or should be his enemy. On several occasions he gives wisdom and advice to members of the Avatar's party, and even once to a thief trying to mug him.

Iroh has a massive amount of respect for life and the balance of the elements. His reverence and understanding for it is so strong, that he is one of the only people alive to have received the secret knowledge from the firebending Masters, earning him the title of Dragon of the West. The respect he has for the other elements and Nations has allowed him to adapt his own fighting styles, such as developing the ability to redirect lightning using waterbending techniques and understanding chi flow. He is very rarely a man who angers, but it would be a mistake to underestimate him. He has a long life of wisdom, tactical and strategic knowledge that was once world renowned, and excellent fighting skills. He is firm when he believes he needs to be, and can be provoked to real anger if the things he cares for - such as his nephew and the balance of life - are threatened.

Abilities/Powers: Iroh is a firebender. This means that he can channel the flow of energy from within his body, produce and manipulate fire to both attack and defend. He is also capable of the more dangerous and powerful forms of firebending - re-directing and controlling lightning. He is a renowned tactician and an expert in military strategy, he also makes an excellent brew of tea.

Sample Entry: [Iroh can be found sitting beside the well under the billboard. His legs are crossed and he's stroking his beard, staring intently at something green by his feet. It's a weed.]

You know, my little friend, you are the first plant I've seen here. It gives me hope that others will start to grow, and make this town live again.

[The devasatation of the ruins has been terrible to him since he arrived. His smile is small as he dips his hands into the full bucket by his side and spinkles the water over the weed. It was a small thing to give life-giving sustenance now. But perhaps the balance would be restored and repaid when the plant was grown, giving them food and clean air in return.]

Perhaps one day you will be as tall as me... but maybe not as round.

[He leaves, laughing to himself.]

Sample Entry Two: This world was not his world. These people were not the ones he knew. Time flowed differently, it seemed, here and at home but this date would be engraved on his heart forever. Although the time here was often fraught with dangers and hardship, almost an endless battle just to survive, he felt it was still important to take the moments of peace where they came and treasure them.

He was thankful this date had one such moment of peace. Perhaps Lu Ten was watching from the spirit world and somehow helped. It wouldn't surprise him, the spirit world should transcend all others, the dead weren't bound by the constraints of life. Why should the dead here be different to the dead at home? He slipped out of the apartment he shared with the people who had become friends to him, taking his leave to somewhere private and alone.

He didn't have incense or a photograph, but a simple stone laid upright was marker enough. His son would know he loved him, the baubles and rituals were less important than that.
