Personality: Yukari is an elderly, proud youkai of Gensokyo. Unlike the younger ones of her kind, she is not as energetic or overt with what she will or will not become involved in. For the most part, she simply sleeps days and nights end upon end, conserving her energy and powers for when she will actually need it. Meanwhile, she has her shikigami Ran do the grunt work of tending to the border around Gensokyo in her place. When will she actually need it? From time to time, naturally, as this is Gensokyo and incidents that may need her expertise are numerous and often. Yet, even then there is not many a time where she will actively participate in helping out an incident (with one exception). Instead, she would often delegate tasks to others. She would rather have others tend to incidents under her (minor) direction, should they even want her involvement. Similarly, this aspect is often expressed in her rather manipulative nature when regarding others.
Following this thought, Yukari is known as the resident troll of her world. Although she's old and lazy, Yukari does what she wants, when she wants. That 'when', of course, would be right after she finishes her next nap. She's a trickster in her manipulation, often abusing her abilities to pop in uninvited or to steal things. Her antics can make others miserable, annoyed, and much more difficult for a time. Yet, more often that not she means no real harm unless someone is to get on her bad side. She enjoys both the extravagant and simple; in fact, she will make an extravagant plot just to obtain something simple. As the Youkai of Boundaries both figurative and literal, it makes sense that she enjoys expressing opposites in the way she goes about her business. Testing the strength of the fibers of concepts and reality is a past time, and when bored enough to not even sleep, one can be sure she will be up to something regarding this fact.
As for interpersonal relationships, Yukari is not always antagonizing or a so-called troll (although admittedly she is as much frequently). Despite being a youkai, Yukari is rather friendly and polite towards humans upon first meeting them... or at least she gives them as much politeness as they are due. That is, Yukari isn't the type of youkai to suddenly attack, curse, or eat humans just because she can or she's simply hungry. Besides, there is a boundary between a human and youkai, one that she can easily manipulate. In fact, if given enough incentive, she may lend some of her aid. She can tell others about Gensokyo and herself. Easily so; in fact, she is frequently cited as being the most informed being in Gensokyo. The problem with anything Yukari-related, whether words, body language, or actions, is if what she says or does is true or not. To one who can manipulate the boundaries between truths and falsehoods, whether she is being called insincere or not matters little.
There are but two things that make her move upon the great game board that is existence, and that is when the integrity of Gensokyo is threatened and when someone she actually does care about is threatened. Note that the two are are not mutually exclusive. Sometimes the two reasons even conflict with each other, but Yukari is not above compromises between the two. Her main motivation does come something deeper than just seeking amusement or pure hedonism, but this is not often expressed enough for others to see. Yukari does have a sensitive side to her, but she regards acknowledging it or truly showing it as something only meant for a select few individuals.
