APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN!
The next processing date is Friday 11th October
IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE
We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.
In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.
You may apply for two characters every two weeks, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.
Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. If you wish to request a specific apartment, please do so in the relevant part of the application. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.
If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.
Every attempt will be made to place a character in their chosen apartments, though this may not always be possible depending on the slots available.
Applications are open constantly, but are only processed every other Friday at 7PM EST. The Saturday following acceptance, an IC mingle log will be posted for characters to be introduced to the game.
We now have a test drive community athaventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old.

If you looked up "skeptic" in the dictionary, you'd probably find a nice picture of Keats' face right underneath it. For, no matter what he goes through in his life, Keats will continue to drown himself in logic and reason without even a flinch. Met ghosts in the pub? Special effects. Gained powers to go to the Netherworld? A lucid dream. Talking to the dead like it's nothing? Probably going insane, or hallucinating, or both. Oddly enough, despite being bombarded in the face with the evidence that the supernatural is very much real, Keats just shrugs it off like it's nothing, expecting everything he sees to have a solid, logical explanation behind it. There's no freaking out, no pulling of hair, no utter shock and awe- Keats, upon seeing something out of the ordinary and highly unexplainable, just plays along with it, making casual quips about how this will get him a really good story when all is said and done. (This is highly ironic, given that he writes for an occult magazine of all things, but this head-scratching contradiction will be explained a bit later.)
Keats isn't the easiest man to get along with. He doesn't hesitate to snark like nothing else if he feels a person is being unhelpful or generally annoying, and can be horribly insensitive at times. For example, at one part when he discovers a dead body, he doesn't even show any feeling other than annoyance due to the fact that he lost a good source for his investigation. He doesn't seem to want or need any emotional connections to people, and merely just presses people with his questions, trying to find as many clues as he can. Keats is cynical, sarcastic, and doesn't try to sugarcoat things- if there's a brutal truth he needs to say, he'll say it, no matter if it lands him in hot water or not. That being said, he also doesn't really have any fear of going against authority- even when told numerous times in the story that he was a target for helping someone that the Faeries considered an enemy, Keats just shrugged it off every time. He doesn't care- all he wants is his story, and his story he will get.
For, what drives him beyond anything else in his curiosity. Despite his skepticism, he knows a good lead when he sees one, and he will do anything to chase after it. It's both a strength and a weakness- his curiosity is what keeps him going when the going gets tough, but at the same time, it can often lead him sticking his nose into places where it doesn't belong. Like any good reporter, he won't stop until he's dug out every last remaining facet of the truth.
But all in all...Keats isn't a bad person. Quite the contrary. Even if he can be incredibly sarcastic and brutally honest to the point of hurting someone emotionally, it's not out of ill will or anything. He supports people in a way they may not realize, saying things like "don't let down your guard" or gently replying "you won't fail" to a character's worry that they'll not succeed at their task. (I mean, although people make him out to be a heartless jerk, he really quietly does his best to help people- in this scene (it's a screenshot), for example, his first reaction to the spirit of a boy telling Keats he wants to erase himself is to try to persuade him not to.) He even goes out of his way to ensure the safety of a girl he barely knows. All in all, he's incredibly reliable, and won't trouble people with his own problems or thoughts- if they want something done, he'll get it done. Hey, you want to go prevent an entire race of beings from unleashing the fear of death upon the world for good? Sure, why not, he'll go along with it if he thinks it's interesting enough. But he won't acknowledge it if you thank him for what he's done. Much like his reaction to the supernatural, any thanks or gratitude will be shrugged off. Okay, he saved the day, but really, it's nothing.
It's nothing at all.
HUGE SPOILERS FOR FOLKLORE BELOW
The fact is, at this point in time, Keats completely and utterly believes he's a real human being. Just a normal 27-year old occult journalist who spends time in his apartment, typing up stories and occasionally having rants against his stupid teapot for falling and burning him. That's all.
The fact is...he's not human. His office isn't even technically a real place on Earth, just another realm of the Netherworld created to house him. He's been spending time in that office for the last seventeen years, staring at issues of the magazine that no longer exists...and he still continues to live his wonderfully woven lie of a life without thinking too much about it. Now, one realizes why he doubts the supernatural so readily- to accept the supernatural would be accepting that something is off with him, that maybe he's the odd one out...
As time goes on in the story, Keats slowly begins to have an inkling that something is going on with the things he encounters that might involve him, but for now, those thoughts will have to be put aside when he enters the strange world of Haven.

LET ME SIT YOU DOWN AND TELL YOU ABOUT HOW THE MECHANICS OF FOLKLORE WORK
It's rather similar to the game of Pokemon. You go out, find creatures, battle the creatures, capture them, and then use them to fight other creatures! Pretty simple. Except replace creatures with "souls of the dead that have changed into monstrous creatures" and you've pretty much got how the gameplay in Folklore works.
Keats is one of the few people who has the power to absorb the Ids, or soul-like essences, of the creatures he finds in the Netherworld Realms, which are called Folks. Folks are essentially souls of the dead that, upon not finding peace, become twisted into terrible forms and become rather hostile towards anything else they encounter. Keats can take these Ids and use them in battle against other creatures. This, of course, will not be usable in Haven, considering that the monsters there have no Ids he can absorb, but this is just put here to explain how he got his Ids that he uses in the first place.
While the other main character, Ellen, merely summons her Ids to fight for her, Keats employs a very different fighting tactic- he uses the Ids as almost part of himself, bolstering his attacks to terrifying and incredibly violent heights. (See the Fighting Spirit TV Tropes page for a better explanation!) However, he can't constantly keep using the Id's abilities as many times as he wants, one after the other- he does get put under strain if he does so, and while it takes only a couple minutes to recover, he is left wide open and vulnerable for that short period of time. (Basically, in video game speak, he has a meter for his Id-using ability- bigger, stronger Ids use up the bar more readily, and once it is depleted, he can't use any Ids until the bar goes back up again after a minute or so.)
SO WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, let me link you to the page where the fifteen Ids he will be having at his beck and call in Haven are listed!
LIST OF FOLK IDS HE CAN USE IN HAVEN
Also of note: whenever he gets into the presence of a monster, his eyes glow purple and his whole form seems to shimmer with unbridled power- this seems to be a somewhat involuntary reaction, as he sometimes has this occur even when the player doesn't see any enemies on screen yet, so basically he's like a walking monster detector, as well.
There's also a mode called Transcension, where Keats can transform into a more powerful version of himself and decimate enemies within seconds, but this requires a certain amount of souls to be absorbed before this can happen, and therefore wouldn't be available in Haven, given that the monsters there cannot have their essences absorbed in any way.
Okay, now onto the SUPER SPOILERY STUFF:
Keats is a Half-Life, as said before.
Basically, he's a child's glorified imaginary friend, born specifically to grant a deeply-seated desire or wish- in this case, protecting Ellen and all the people in the village that Herve loved. But what this means means that, while all children will see him without any problem, adults are less likely to do so unless they believe in magic and the supernatural a little bit. This was displayed in a quest that Keats could undertake in the game- an outsider came to the village and couldn't see Keats until he started doing things for her (like bring her specific items, etc.) and then she started to be able to see him. Yes, the irony of a an occult magazine reporter who doesn't believe in the occult and yet can only be seen by people who believe in the occult...I will have a permission post for this!
Also, while Half-Lives usually disappear after their purpose has been fulfilled, Keats' role has been "upgraded" due to the fact that he became a Guardian to Ellen. Now, he'll live on for eternity, much like Belgae, Livane's Guardian, who is shown still very much existing after Livane has passed away. But...he'll never know this unless the truth is revealed to him. While he is immortal in terms of "never aging and dying of old age", he can still be killed- but if this ever happens, there will be no physical evidence left of it. Keats will merely disappear into thin air as if he was never there in the first place, much like the Folk and other Half-lives do after their death.
Items/Weapons:
1. A tape-recorder which he apparently carries at all times.
2. A copy of Unknown Realms magazine
3. The long
badasspurple coat he is almost always seen wearing.Keats | Folklore | Reserved
Sample Entry Two:
Oh, now, this was ridiculous.
Keats' eyebrows knitted together as he stared down at the obviously empty page in front of him. Only an hour or so ago, he had written all his observations down about the place and what he had gathered from its inhabitants, and now...it was all gone. Vanished. As if he had gone and accidentally written in invisible ink when he wasn't looking.
"Come now, you can't be telling me that-?" He couldn't finish the sentence. Of course he could write without things like this happening. This must be a fluke of some sort, perhaps a good prank by one of his roommates, or maybe something in the air had influenced the ink and changed it's composition somewhat, making it fade...Keats' mind pored through every explanation he could think of, and finally, he put the page down on the table, letting out a sigh as he ran a hand through his hair. Although none of the explanations he had thought of really seemed to fit, he was satisfied enough with them to completely brush off the idea that this was all due to supernatural causes.
"Right. I'll just rewrite all of it. Even though it took me a while to do that..." Without even a pause, he tore another page from the empty journal he had found, ready to start all over again. Magical reasons or otherwise, nothing was going to keep him from writing the articles he needed to write. The truth about Haven was going to come out one way or another.
A reporter never backs down from any challenge, after all...
