Personality: If you could describe Lapis in one word, it would be 'spacey'. She tends to have a dazed, dreamy expression on her face and she has an attitude to match. She always seems like she isn't paying attention to what's going on around her, and is the kind of person who will just suddenly stop in the middle of the street when she becomes absorbed in her thoughts. When she speaks, her words are slow and her replies take a few moments to actually come, and it's very rare that she ever answers anything immediately, instead just staying in her daze for a moment before replying. Her attitude in general seems to very apathetic as well; she hardly emotes, and always seems to have a sense of calm, which is only heightened by how softly she speaks. She does seem like the kind of person who hardly pays attention to anything around her, and who just goes with the flow.
Which isn't exactly true. Despite how absent-minded she seems, she is actually highly observant, and she does listen to every word that is said to her and can easily repeat things with no trouble. She will pick up on things other people may not notice, and she tends to notice shifts in moods. Her spacey attitude and almost eerie calm stems from how she tries to keep an iron-fisted control of herself, as any sort of weakness could lead to her getting possessed again, as guilt still lingers over what had happened before. Lapis likes being in control of herself, which results in her coming across as a space cadet most of the time. The way she speaks, however, tends to contrast with how meek she appears, since Lapis completely lacks a brain-to-mouth filter and will always tend to say what's on her mind, no matter how rude it is. Thanks to having only been around her family and ghosts for most of her life, Lapis doesn't have much in the way of social skills, and so can be very blunt and cutting, even when she doesn't mean to. She also tends to be very assertive as well, due to how she likes to be in control, so instead of going with the flow like some people might think she would, it's highly likely that she will go to do her own thing. There's an odd sense of confidence in herself because of that, since she knows people find her creepy, but she has no plans to change that, and is happy with how she is. Which is also a sign of her incredible stubbornness, as Lapis isn't one to do something unless she wants to, even if changing would be beneficial to her. It takes some convincing to get her to back down from an idea that she's set her mind to, and even then she'll only agree to something like a compromise. It doesn't help that she has a prideful side to her as well, and is rather confident in her abilities as a Ghost Master, despite how being overconfident before got her possessed and she takes her occupation very seriously. She doesn't like being wrong, and can be far too bull-headed for her own good. Of course, she can be patient when she needs to be, and is alright with waiting and watching if it gets her what she wants in the end.
Her constant exposure towards ghosts since a young age has led her to develop an almost morbid interest in death, and simply views it as another part of life. She can't really understand why people are so fearful of it, since to her, it just seems like a new beginning in a different kind of existence, and she knows how hardy or vulnerable humans can be as a result of ghosts telling her about their deaths. She does see life as precious as well, and the idea of ever actually hurting someone makes her feel ill, though this is also partly due to how she went on a rampage while she was possessed; Lapis will never actively try to hurt someone, and instead will do her best to help someone if they're hurt. So long as they aren't someone who she feels has wronged her in some way. Since Lapis can be very spiteful, and isn't the kind of person to forgive easily. She may understand why someone did something, but that doesn't mean she has to forgive them anytime soon, however it takes a lot to get her to act like this, considering how calm she is.
Despite all this, Lapis is a genuinely kind person, as she continued with her job as a Ghost Master in order to protect people from the more dangerous spirits, despite how dangerous it was for her. Even while she's reluctant to change herself, she does her best to come across as less eerie to people who are more obviously disturbed and doesn't hesitate to reassure people that the ghosts she has with her are safe, or dismiss them for a while if the other person is too uncomfortable. She always gets a sense of achievement if she can make someone happy or help someone out, and doesn't hesitate to extend help to people who need it. She will apologize if she realizes her bluntness has made someone upset, and she is fiercely protective of people she cares about, an example being her older sister, Laguna; hurting her in anyway is the quickest way to make Lapis furious. Since while she isn't the most socially graceful person, she does want to make friends, but she just has no clue how to go about it and tends to be very distant and formal at first until she's certain the other person doesn't mind her oddities. Plus, for all her calmness, she's actually very playful, and likes being able to unwind and have fun. She's the kind of person to drag people around an amusement park and go around all the rides, and while her humour is rather black, she may attempt to make jokey comments in order to help lessen a tense atmosphere, and she will actually smile and laugh, since she doesn't believe that showing happiness is a weakness. This also links into how she views life as precious; you only truly live once, so it's best to make the most of it, which is why she isn't one to dwell on things either, especially since she had almost died. However, for how much she knows about death, she's actually very innocent and naive about everything else; she's not really sure how relationships work, she wouldn't recognize flirting even if it was obvious and she is easy to manipulate just due to how she doesn't realize how social situations typically work.
For how unflappable Lapis is sometimes, she can be pushed to shock or anger and she will show it if pushed enough. Fear is something she greatly lacks though, it's hard to be scared of anything when you hang around ghosts who have been maimed in horrible ways. Her rather prideful nature means that while she doesn't get truly angry quickly, she can get annoyed and she tends to lapse into Italian until it has passed. One way to get her angry is to disrespect the dead, due to how most of her friends are spirits and she views life and death as equally important. She can also get embarrassed too, and she tends to do so when people do actually act friendly towards her, since she's so unused to it, and it's a quick way to make her flustered for a moment before she ends up smiling. While she isn't one to become uncomfortable either, things like forced eye-contact can make her visibly uncomfortable and she will actively do her best to get out of that. And for how she seems content to stay as how she is, Lapis is lonely; her parent distancing themselves from her hurt far more than she ever let on, and is another reason why Lapis has some trouble reaching out, since if her own parents didn't want to be close to her, who else would? So while she doesn't emote much, they are still there and her calmness and stubborn control of herself just means that she doesn't tend to show them that often. And when she does finally get close to someone? She is loyal to a fault and protective, and isn't at all shy about physically affection either; hugs would certainly be a thing with friends, especially as a form of comfort, and hand holding would be a thing she would do without noticing. She likes being close to people she cares about, although she can respect boundaries that are set into place.
Lapis, for all her spaciness, is basically just a blunt, stubborn, but kind-hearted and lonely woman who just completely lacks in social grace and has been around dead people for too long. While she's driven and isn't one to listen if she doesn't want to hear it, she's surprisingly innocent and would just rather go have fun than dwell on anything too serious. While there is a life after death, this current life is too precious to waste on worrying, so Lapis opts to try to have fun and work towards anything she wants, rather than fretting over what ifs. She's always surrounded by death, after all.
