We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.
In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.
You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.
Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.
If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.
Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.
We now have a test drive community athaventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.
While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

World Info
The world Lapis is from is exactly like ours, except that the barrier between the worlds of the living and dead is especially weak. This has resulted in powerful spirit mediums being born who are known as Ghost Masters, and they hold the ability to recruit spirits under their command and in return, they provide the spirits with some of their spiritual energy, making them more powerful than average ghosts. As a result of the weak barrier, haunting are more frequent and more dangerous, and Ghost Masters tend to be employed to deal with the more troublesome and dangerous cases by either banishing the spirit or by recruiting it. There are ghosts that do not do anything, and are happy enough to wander and observe the living, those that enjoy pranking the living and scaring them, and those that want to hurt the living and sometimes other spirits. Ghosts that are harmful to others tend to hold a great deal of malice and anger, which empowers them and allows them to manifest themselves.
Of course, the world still has sceptics and non-believers, and not all Ghost Masters make themselves known, though Ghost Masters can sense other Masters. And they tend to be competitive with each other, since recruiting spirits increases their power, which allows them to recruit stronger spirits or be more effective at banishing stronger spirits.
Background
Lapis was born in Campobasso, Italy to Giulio and Caprice Fathalla, and an older sister by fourteen years, Laguna Fathalla. Her childhood until the age of four was fairly normal; her mother raised her, while her father worked as professor at the city's university and her older sister, possibly thanks to her age, wasn't too bothered about having a younger sibling and was just pleased that Lapis was a quiet baby and still stayed rather quiet as she grew into a toddler. Things only start to get complicated a few months after her fourth birthday, where she and her mother witnessed a car crash. While everyone was horrified, Lapis was only curious and asked her mother why there were hurt people just standing in the middle of the wreckage and why the medics were just ignoring them. This was when Lapis' abilities started to make themselves known and her mother, not really knowing what to do, sought out help from Lapis' paternal grandmother, Dafne Fathalla, who had displayed similar abilities though only her family was aware of it.
This was the start of her distancing from her parents as her grandmother taught Lapis of her abilities. While she still lived with her parents, they found themselves unsure of how to handle their daughter's gifts and so kept their distance, thinking it was for the best. While Laguna, despite being shocked, still tried to treat her sister as normally, hoping she wouldn't notice the change in their parents behaviour. But Lapis was still perceptive even as a child, and her parents distance made her withdraw into herself as a result, and eventually her grandmother pulled her out of school to be home-tutored. It wasn't too long after this that she met Mitchell, who had just recently been burned to death in a nearby fire, and, having realized that this little girl was the only one who could see or hear him, decided to stay with her, resulting in the first actual 'contract' she has made.
As Lapis grew, her abilities grew with her, and she started to take in more spirits under her command, though Mitchell was always the one who wanted to stay summoned, rather than rest in the spirit world until called. But besides her grandparents, sister and spirits, Lapis didn't really bond with anyone else, noticing that her behaviour tended to unnerve people and it only got worse when they realized what she was able to do. So, she kept to herself most of the time, and as she grew older, people who knew of her abilities and believed in them, or people who knew of Lapis via her grandmother, started to ask her for assistance with hauntings. She dealt a few hauntings in her home country, banishing or recruiting the more dangerous spirits when she could, despite it blowing up in her face sometimes. Almost literally. Her sister, when she wasn't busy with studying and working towards being a chemist, would accompany her and act as a guide to keep her more reckless sister out of trouble.
However, one job went incredibly badly when she was twenty when she, along with a few other exorcists, when to the site of an abandoned factory where an apparently dangerous spirit lurked and Lapis attempted to banish it, however it was far too powerful for her to handle. This resulted in the spirit possessing her and thus going on a rampage, only being expelled from Lapis' body with the aid of the exorcists and her sisters basic knowledge of spirits after over a day of this occurring. While people were hurt, nobody was killed, but it was believed that Lapis herself had died as a result of the spirit having inhabited her body for too long and her own spirit being pushed out; luckily Lapis' spirit was able to get back into her body, but waking up in the arms of her hysterically crying sister, hands covered in blood with no memory why, did leave a large impact on her, including having an affect on her abilities, and when he parents heard the news, this seemed to be the final straw and they stopped acknowledging Lapis, hoping that by doing so, she would stop taking part in such dangerous jobs. This plan failed, and instead both Laguna and Lapis decided to travel to England for a year as a sort of holiday, and it's during this time that she met Peter, another spirit that she keeps actively summoned, though he's more of a harmless prankster, most of the time. They eventually travel to America after this, Laguna had completed her studies and training, and thus was able to take up jobs as a chemist to help fund their travelling around America, along with the money acquired from Lapis' ghost hunting jobs. And even as she travelled and got older, Lapis still kept to herself, still fully aware of how she just tended to make others uneasy.
The most recent place Lapis and Laguna have settled into is Everett in Washington, and it's here where Lapis meets her 'rival' Ghost Master, Elliot Hale. While Lapis does her best to ignore him, his tendency to butt into her jobs is irritating and while they hardly get along, this does mark as an initial step for Lapis to connect with people beyond her family and spirits.

Which isn't exactly true. Despite how absent-minded she seems, she is actually highly observant, and she does listen to every word that is said to her and can easily repeat things with no trouble. She will pick up on things other people may not notice, and she tends to notice shifts in moods. Her spacey attitude and almost eerie calm stems from how she tries to keep an iron-fisted control of herself, as any sort of weakness could lead to her getting possessed again, as guilt still lingers over what had happened before. Lapis likes being in control of herself, which results in her coming across as a space cadet most of the time. The way she speaks, however, tends to contrast with how meek she appears, since Lapis completely lacks a brain-to-mouth filter and will always tend to say what's on her mind, no matter how rude it is. Thanks to having only been around her family and ghosts for most of her life, Lapis doesn't have much in the way of social skills, and so can be very blunt and cutting, even when she doesn't mean to. She also tends to be very assertive as well, due to how she likes to be in control, so instead of going with the flow like some people might think she would, it's highly likely that she will go to do her own thing. There's an odd sense of confidence in herself because of that, since she knows people find her creepy, but she has no plans to change that, and is happy with how she is. Which is also a sign of her incredible stubbornness, as Lapis isn't one to do something unless she wants to, even if changing would be beneficial to her. It takes some convincing to get her to back down from an idea that she's set her mind to, and even then she'll only agree to something like a compromise. It doesn't help that she has a prideful side to her as well, and is rather confident in her abilities as a Ghost Master, despite how being overconfident before got her possessed and she takes her occupation very seriously. She doesn't like being wrong, and can be far too bull-headed for her own good. Of course, she can be patient when she needs to be, and is alright with waiting and watching if it gets her what she wants in the end.
Her constant exposure towards ghosts since a young age has led her to develop an almost morbid interest in death, and simply views it as another part of life. She can't really understand why people are so fearful of it, since to her, it just seems like a new beginning in a different kind of existence, and she knows how hardy or vulnerable humans can be as a result of ghosts telling her about their deaths. She does see life as precious as well, and the idea of ever actually hurting someone makes her feel ill, though this is also partly due to how she went on a rampage while she was possessed; Lapis will never actively try to hurt someone, and instead will do her best to help someone if they're hurt. So long as they aren't someone who she feels has wronged her in some way. Since Lapis can be very spiteful, and isn't the kind of person to forgive easily. She may understand why someone did something, but that doesn't mean she has to forgive them anytime soon, however it takes a lot to get her to act like this, considering how calm she is.
Despite all this, Lapis is a genuinely kind person, as she continued with her job as a Ghost Master in order to protect people from the more dangerous spirits, despite how dangerous it was for her. Even while she's reluctant to change herself, she does her best to come across as less eerie to people who are more obviously disturbed and doesn't hesitate to reassure people that the ghosts she has with her are safe, or dismiss them for a while if the other person is too uncomfortable. She always gets a sense of achievement if she can make someone happy or help someone out, and doesn't hesitate to extend help to people who need it. She will apologize if she realizes her bluntness has made someone upset, and she is fiercely protective of people she cares about, an example being her older sister, Laguna; hurting her in anyway is the quickest way to make Lapis furious. Since while she isn't the most socially graceful person, she does want to make friends, but she just has no clue how to go about it and tends to be very distant and formal at first until she's certain the other person doesn't mind her oddities. Plus, for all her calmness, she's actually very playful, and likes being able to unwind and have fun. She's the kind of person to drag people around an amusement park and go around all the rides, and while her humour is rather black, she may attempt to make jokey comments in order to help lessen a tense atmosphere, and she will actually smile and laugh, since she doesn't believe that showing happiness is a weakness. This also links into how she views life as precious; you only truly live once, so it's best to make the most of it, which is why she isn't one to dwell on things either, especially since she had almost died. However, for how much she knows about death, she's actually very innocent and naive about everything else; she's not really sure how relationships work, she wouldn't recognize flirting even if it was obvious and she is easy to manipulate just due to how she doesn't realize how social situations typically work.
For how unflappable Lapis is sometimes, she can be pushed to shock or anger and she will show it if pushed enough. Fear is something she greatly lacks though, it's hard to be scared of anything when you hang around ghosts who have been maimed in horrible ways. Her rather prideful nature means that while she doesn't get truly angry quickly, she can get annoyed and she tends to lapse into Italian until it has passed. One way to get her angry is to disrespect the dead, due to how most of her friends are spirits and she views life and death as equally important. She can also get embarrassed too, and she tends to do so when people do actually act friendly towards her, since she's so unused to it, and it's a quick way to make her flustered for a moment before she ends up smiling. While she isn't one to become uncomfortable either, things like forced eye-contact can make her visibly uncomfortable and she will actively do her best to get out of that. And for how she seems content to stay as how she is, Lapis is lonely; her parent distancing themselves from her hurt far more than she ever let on, and is another reason why Lapis has some trouble reaching out, since if her own parents didn't want to be close to her, who else would? So while she doesn't emote much, they are still there and her calmness and stubborn control of herself just means that she doesn't tend to show them that often. And when she does finally get close to someone? She is loyal to a fault and protective, and isn't at all shy about physically affection either; hugs would certainly be a thing with friends, especially as a form of comfort, and hand holding would be a thing she would do without noticing. She likes being close to people she cares about, although she can respect boundaries that are set into place.
Lapis, for all her spaciness, is basically just a blunt, stubborn, but kind-hearted and lonely woman who just completely lacks in social grace and has been around dead people for too long. While she's driven and isn't one to listen if she doesn't want to hear it, she's surprisingly innocent and would just rather go have fun than dwell on anything too serious. While there is a life after death, this current life is too precious to waste on worrying, so Lapis opts to try to have fun and work towards anything she wants, rather than fretting over what ifs. She's always surrounded by death, after all.

Being a Ghost Master also gives Lapis other abilities, such as;
Lapis also holds some advanced knowledge of human anatomy, as a result of her interest in what humans can withstand and the information she learned from ghosts. She's also well-versed in dancing and singing, but she tends to only use these for rituals when required.
Items/Weapons:

Sample Entry Two: The building creaks when Lapis enters, and the first thing that hits her is the smell of rotting wood and paper, though the hallway is completely empty. Her sister enters the ruined house after her and stick close to her side, making no comment as Lapis instinctively moves to stand in front of her like always. While Lapis is the youngest, Laguna is the one being protected more often than not on excursions like these. But Lapis is at least aware that this will be an easy job, the spirit they were looking for seemed more fond of scaring people rather than hurting them. You could never be too sure with ghosts though, so she had made sure to have her spirits with her and prepared, and she could feel them hover around her sister and her, and see their maimed forms out of the corner of her eye.
“... Did you bring the wards?” The soft-spoken question is directed at Laguna, and gold eyes flicker over to her as she holds up the wards in question; there was no way Lapis could handle them, so that fell to Laguna. So, they were pretty much prepared and the job wasn't even a dangerous one, so this would be easy. But there was a certain uneasiness around the elder sister that Lapis could pick up, and she doesn't hesitate to reach out to hold her hand in a comforting motion, receiving a hand squeeze in return, as her eyes now look at the spirits gathered.
“... Mitchell, Peter, stay with us. Everyone else go scout the area...” There's a murmur of agreement from the group, and the spirits dart into the darkness of the house, now only leaving two with the young woman. However, they were trustworthy, and with this in mind, Lapis started to walk into the house, her sister right behind her and her attitude as calm as ever. She makes sure to stay aware though; ghosts, even the less malicious ones, can still cause a lot of trouble.
