Applications Two

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
The next application opening date is Friday 16th January, 7pm EST.
The next application processing date is Friday 23rd January, 7pm EST.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

To see what we are looking for:

Abilities/Powers:

Jayce's combat abilities all stem from his weapon, the Mercury Hammer, an intricately self-engineered hammer that uses an energy source within to produce a number of different effects. Having made this weapon himself over a long period of research and testing, Jayce is intimately familiar with it and can wield it in a deadly fashion.

Other than being used as a simple blunt force weapon, it has the following abilities:

- the ability to transform the hammer into the Mercury Cannon which effectively transforms the hammer into a long-range weapon that shoots orbs of electricity, make the hammer versatile for both up close and ranged fights.

- the ability to create an Acceleration Gate which allows all who move through it to gain a slight increase to their velocity for a short period of time, manifesting as a line of glowing light about two meters long in width and lasting for a couple of seconds.

- the ability to create a Lightning Field around himself which damages those close to him over time - a sustainable release of electrical damage. This manifests itself as a yellow cocoon of lightning the surrounds Jayce, the occasional spark arcing off and cracking.

- the ability to shoot a Shock Blast of electricity from the end of the Mercury Cannon that doubles the distance traveled if shot through an already existing Acceleration Gate. The ball of electricity is blue and shimmering, and it erupts out of the tip of the Mercury Cannon at a high speed.

Aside from these offensive abilities, Jayce also has a great intellect and a vast knowledge of engineering, which is another critical ability for him. This enables him to problem solve quickly, and build contraptions out of next to nothing due to this prior experience and study. Although he's mostly skilled in electrical engineering, he should be a pretty good MacGuyver with most spare parts.

Items/Weapons: Jayce will arrive with only his Mercury Hammer.

Sample Entry: Dear Mun Voice-testing

Sample Entry Two:

If Jayce had ever been dismayed at the lack of tools available for him to do his job back in Piltover, he swears he's taking that back. Immediately. Yeah, sure, it's not difficult for someone like him to make a lot out of a little, but he'd severely underestimated how fiddly and time-consuming routine maintenance on equipment could be without simple tools at his disposal - like, say, a screwdriver. He'd just about kill for a goddamn screwdriver right about now, having made do with the flat, sharp end of a rock he'd pillaged from the rubble outside earlier. It was doing its job, barely, but had chipped in the process:

- his nails
- the enamel on the handle of the hammer
- the skin of his right thumb knuckle
and,
- the casing of the electrical conduit when it had slipped.

Overall, not exactly the finest tool that man had ever engineered, but unfortunately, Jayce wasn't really in a place to complain - although a lot of complaining was going on inside his head right now.

Jerking the stone one more time into the head of the screw, there was a quiet crack in the air as the stone snapped, the now useless tip sliding out of the screw's groove and to the the floor. In a growl of frustration, the scientist throws the hammer aside in a fit of anger where it hits the wall adjacent with a crunch, falling loudly to rest on the ground next to him. Fucking thing.

What the hell was he supposed to do like this? Smelt something that actually worked? With a laboured sigh, Jayce leaned forward, back bent and hand stroking the almost unwieldy stubble on his chin. He was tired. He needed a break. A break that somehow accompanied itself with a glass of neat whiskey, on the rocks.

Character Name: Katherine “Kate” Bishop (codename: Hawkeye)
Canon: Marvel 616 comics
Canon Point: after Hawkeye issue #14
Background/History: wiki link

Personality: Kate Bishop is a hero. A self-proclaimed hero, a struggling hero, a hero-still-trying-to-find-her-footing-in-the-hero-world hero, but a hero nonetheless. But unlike most of her peers and superiors, Kate’s heroism wasn’t born out of legacy, or necessity, or some cosmic twist of fate. She didn’t have to do all that she’s done, and there were several times she could have just walked away.

But she didn’t. Walking away isn’t typically in her nature.

Strong, confident, and assertive, Kate is used to going for what she wants, and not letting anything or anyone stop her until she gets it. Even up against Captain America, Mr. Avengers himself, Kate refused to back down, unwilling to stop being the hero that she knew she could be. In fact, if Kate Bishop has any superpower at all, it is her super stubbornness. There’s just no telling this girl what to do, for better or for worse — once she’s made up her mind about something, she’s in it to win it. Sometimes (most of the time) this gets her into trouble, and she never truly seems to learn her lesson.

That is essentially her origin story: in a time of conflict, Kate saw an opportunity to rescue people, and — at the risk of her own, very mortal, very human life — she took it. Rather than allow herself to become a victim (once more) or a tool to be exploited, Kate took matters into her own hand and decided to fight back. It was stupid, and brash, and incredibly foolish, but to Kate, the possibility of helping people outweighed the risks she’d taken. It always will.

“Life is short. And it doesn’t matter how good your grades are — or how many hours you put in at the soup kitchen…
You’re not safe. Bad things happen. Things you can’t control. Things that have nothing to do with you.
And they will destroy you if you let them.
Or you can try to learn from them… so that the next time, you’ll be prepared.
So that — even if you never feel safe again — you can do your best to make sure that what happened to you never happens to anyone else.”

Kate’s story is a story everyone can relate to. It is a story about unfortunate circumstances, of being at the wrong place, at the wrong time, of being made victim to one of humanity’s worst deeds. It is a story about being knocked down and put in a very low place. It is a story of gradually climbing out of that place, of finding a voice and a strength and a will again.

Kate’s motivation stems from a desire to help, to do good like her mother had, but in a way that she feels more rewarding and comfortable with. Even without the superpowers, the tech, and the experience, Kate arms herself with her wit and her guts to help others out whenever she can. Her nobility also surfaces in smaller, subtler ways, as in the fact she’d never been truly comfortable with the wealth her family has. She clearly takes after her mother, who’d spent a long time traveling the world trying to save it in the most humane ways possible, going so far as to goad her sister during her own wedding about the insane amount of money going into it, and offering homeless people money every time she comes across one.

There is a mothering side to her that stems from this desire to help people. Quick to come to the aid and support of Cassie, the rest of the Young Avengers, and even Clint Barton himself, Kate often defaults to acting as a support system for those whose problems or issues surpass her own (and most of the time, she decides they always do). It is selfless, in a selfish sort of way, because helping people is how she feels better about herself. When she helps people, she becomes that person she actually feels is worth something.

At times, she can be alarmingly blunt. Whether it’s a remnant from growing up rich and entitled, or a derivation of her own kind of bravery, Kate doesn’t really hesitate to say what she wants to say, regardless of how others may take it. Especially authority figures. One can even say she doesn’t have a very good track record with them, from yelling (and guilt-tripping, and blatantly defying several times) Captain America to calling the original Hawkeye himself a “doof” to his face.

She does not dwell, either. Or, at least, she does her best not to allow herself to. Despite her trauma, despite the loss of her mother who was clearly a great influence on her, and despite the numerous setbacks she experiences when she decides to go out on her own, Kate constantly takes the initiative to do what she needs to do in order to be better. The Kate that she typically shows everyone is the Kate she’s had to work hard to become — assertive and brave, saying and doing what needs to be said, even (or, perhaps, especially) when no one else will.

Overall, Kate does a fairly good job of looking like she knows exactly what she’s doing, and 99.9% of the time, it’s true. But for all her bravado and all her talk, there is still a part of her that struggles with this new life she’s made for herself. She may no longer be the 16 year old girl with all that gumption that she originally started out as, but she is still young in terms of experience. She’s still trying to find her place in the world of superheroes, making some (a lot of) mistakes along the way, but never once losing sight of the person she wants to be.

Abilities/Powers: Kate is a standard human being with no genetic alterations or enhancements. She possesses no supernatural or mutant powers. She does, however, possess a number of abilities that aid her in the field:
photographic memory/reflexes: Kate displays abilities that allow her to retain and recall details (such as the number combination to the Avengers’ secret training room) even after only seeing it just once, and briefly. Similarly, she can also copy physical acts such as fighting styles and defensive maneuvers after only witnessing it once.
combatant: Kate has been trained in various self-defense styles from a young age. These styles include boxing, jiu jitsu, fencing, and other unspecified forms of combat.
master archer: she has often been compared to (and occasionally even declared to be better than) renowned master archer Clint Barton (Hawkeye).
weaponry: Kate can adeptly wield various forms of weapons such as rapiers, swords, bows, arrows, and battle staves.
cellist: she can play the cello, too. She’s classy like that.

Items/Weapons:
▪ bow
▪ quiver of 30 arrows (23 standard, 7 trick: usb, boomerang, exploding, tracking, (3) smokebombs)
▪ aviator shades

Sample Entry: tdm thread

Sample Entry Two: **NOTE: the following sample includes vague mentions of past assult.**

Fear, they say, is a great inhibitor.

It’s scientific, paralytic. A huge mess of chemicals and psyche and some other stuff that really have no business meshing so well together, but they do, and they do it in the absolute worst of ways. Fear doesn’t need to be rational or logical. Sometimes that’s the worst kind, because no amount of reasoning can talk yourself out of it.

But then other times, the worst kind of fear is the one that takes root in your past. The kind that can pull memories you’ve long since tried to bury, and draw them up again behind closed eyelids like a movie you can’t sit out of.

They told her to be careful. Warned her of all the attempts the others had made previous, and the horrors they’d all had to relive. If you’ve got something to hide, they said, you won’t be able to run from it in there. Even now, just ten feet away from the store, she can feel it again. The utter helplessness and fear of that night in the park; the rough hands of a man whose face she’d never even gotten to look at fully.

But she made a promise to herself a long, long time ago that she’d stop running. That she would take that fear and turn it into anger, or love, or something active, because she was tired of hiding. She wouldn’t be hiding.

She’s a superhero, for goodness’ sakes. There’s heroing to be done.

And so she breathes. Holds up her arms, straightens her spine, pushes back the creeping memories of a man who no longer controls her. Her shot lines up, and she accommodates the added weight of the arrow’s exploding tip. She pulls back the string until it’s good and taut.

Another breath. In and out.

Other Characters Played: Rogue (Marvel Comics)
Requested apartment: Apartment 24.1

Character Name: Makoto Kino (Sailor Jupiter)
Canon: Sailor Moon Crystal
Canon Point: Episode 7
Background/History: The same as her manga counterpart here.

Personality:
Makoto Kino is seen as a tough girl, with an outer shell that doesn't take any sort of abuse. She is fiercely loyal and very sincere, a largely a grounded and practical person who acts as a pillar of support and protection to those arround her. Her name translates to "sincerity" or "faithfulness of wood”, traits that are best demonstrated by her stable, gentle, supportive, and straightforward personality. Her name truly fits.

While she enjoys sports and martial arts, she also immerses herself in stereotypically feminine pursuits such as cooking, sewing, and guardening, in an effort to affirm her femininity. She is actually quite good at these things, and is always trying to strike a balance between her masculine and feminine sides, even though she can be quite shy about the more "girly" aspects of her nature. Her best class is, in fact, Home Economics, as she is a talented cook and seamstress beyond her years.

She tends to be a bit quiet and introverted due to having been something of an outcast most of her life. This can be attributed to her intimidating height, her equally intimidating super streangth, and the fact that she is accustomed to being alone due to being orphaned at a young age. While she is something of a loner, however, her warm and gentle nature helps her make friends easily with those she chooses to open up to.

Makoto has a slightly rough way of speaking, particularly when irritated, and won't hesitate to use brute force when needed. She can easily lift and throw men twice her size. She will also never hesitate to protect someone, anyone, even complete strangers she sees are in danger-- even at the risk of her own life. The best example of this is when she leaps out in front of a moving vehicle to save Usagi from being hit.

While not exactly book smart, Makoto is smart enough to have raised herself, and has a vast wealth of common sense, especially when it comes to problems with other people. She has something of an "onee-san" (big sister) personality that makes her great at giving advice, and is something of a motherhen to those she is close to.

Unfortunately, for all her common sense, Makoto has a tendency to be impulsive. Her tendency to charge into danger when others hesitate can sometimes backfire onto herself. She also occasionally forgets her own strength, though her theoretical super strength might only be played up for comedic effect if anything. She is also terrified of airplanes and suffers great anxiety when one passes overhead, considering her parents died in a plane crash some X years ago.

Thanks to the senpai that broke her heart, Makoto has a habit of falling for older, usually inaccessible men who remind her of him in some way. However, this was played up more in the first anime series and, like her super strength, more for comedic effect than anything else. It's something that is actually fairly serious to Makoto in Crystal. Her broken heart almost destroys her, and it is not until Usagi begs her to believe and trust in love again that Makoto begins to recover.

Once she assumes her role as Sailor Jupiter, the agent of love and protection, she realizes that the force that made her gravitate towards Tokyo was not the prospect of finding love, but a different kind of romance, as the mysterious soldier of thunder and courage.

Abilities/Powers:
Makoto is a magical girl! So she can do this fun little thing where she transforms into the Soldier of Thunder and Courage, Sailor Jupiter! This gives her some really snazzy powers:

Tiara/Thunder and Lightning Antennae: Jupiter's tiara can summon lightning from the sky like a lightning rod, which she uses to supercharge some of her attacks.

Lightning: Makoto's Guardian is Jupiter. The planet is known for its horrific storms, which is reflected in her power set. As Sailor Jupiter, she holds dominion over lightning. While she can harness it freely without the need to verbally summon it, she does have a series of named attacks: Jupiter Thunderbold, Supreme Thunder, Sparkling Wide Pressure, and Jupiter Coconut Cyclone.

Plants/Wood: The planet Jupiter has also been associated with foliage. As such, Sailor Jupiter has dominion over plants, and uses a couple plant-based attacks: Flower Hurricane and Jupiter Oak Evolution.

Sailor Jupiter can also combine her Lightning and Plant/Wood-based attacks.

When she is not transformed, Makoto is said to possess superhuman strength. This is never confirmed nor denied, but being as how she can throw men twice her size without breaking a sweat, it's safe to say she's at least freakishly strong for a girl.

Items/Weapons: Transformation pen, her bento box, a framed photo of her deceased parents

Sample Entry One: http://haventest.dreamwidth.org/56739.html

Sample Entry Two:
When Makoto Kino opens her eyes, she is greeted by a very peculiar sight: that of buildings, ruined, crumbling, and overtaken by a wild growth of foliage. Fast reflexes make her leap to her feet, despite the head-rush such a sudden move causes, and she reaches for her transformation pen in her pocket.

But there is nothing, nor anyone, here.

"Where...?"

Her posture eases, even if her nerves feel raw, every impulse charged and liable to burst... a thought. A premonition, really. Something foreboding, an energy on the wind warning her of something. But what?

There's something else in her pocket. A communicator? It looks nothing like one of Luna's gadgets, however. Makoto doesn't know if she should trust it. This could all be an elaborate trick by the enemy, monsters and other dark forces lurking, waiting, anticipating...

But she's not sure she has much of a choice.

"Usagi?" She talks to the device, tinkering with the controls, and searching its screen frantically for some sign that she's being heard.

"Don't tell me you fell asleep as soon as you got home from school-- ah, you probably just can't hear me! Dammit."

In any case, she can't just stand around in the middle of nowhere forever. Makoto is a woman of action. It's what she does best. Nothing will be accomplished just by standing around! Gripping her pend and communicator tightly in clenched fists, she squares her jaw and sets off into the unknown.

It's not the first time she's ventured into mystery and uncertainty, and she doubts it will be her last.

Character Name: Natsuno Yuuki/Koide (Yuuki is his father’s surname, Koide his mother’s. Natsuno goes by both)
Canon: Shiki
Canon Point: Episode 18.
Background/History: Shiki | Natsuno

Personality:
* Note on terminology: Shiki (“corpse demon”) is the canon name for vampires. “Werewolves” aren’t traditional werewolves, but a superior subspecies of Shiki.

In the words of Natsuno himself, he “doesn’t have a welcoming personality”. He’s quiet, aloof and makes a point of not forming close bonds with other people. He starts off as indifferent at best and blunt at worst, caring little for other people’s feelings. Natsuno despises the small village he parents forced him to move to and hates the villagers’ meddling and gossiping. Having planned to move back to the city the first chance he has, making friends is simply not worth it.

Still, he ends up making a few friends. His relationship with Tohru starts because ignoring him doesn’t work and Natsuno can’t be bothered to actively push him away, but eventually Tohru becomes Natsuno’s best friend. When Natsuno can’t sleep at home, he feels comfortable to crash at Tohru’s place for days, and when Tohru is having trouble asking a girl out, Natsuno uncharacteristically agrees to help him talk to her. Tohru is the one thing he cares about in the village, the one thing that makes life there tolerable. Natsuno doesn’t care about the mysterious deaths in the village until Tohru dies. It pushes him to take action and investigate, and he even ends up making two more friends - the siblings Kaori and Akira - whom he treats with brotherly-like protectiveness.

He’s very loyal and would go to great lengths for the few he trusts and considers as friends. After Tohru rises as a Shiki, Natsuno can’t bring himself to hurt him, and instead asks him to run away from the village together. He hopes that Tohru will come around even as he spends the next three days sucking his blood and slowly killing him. He tells Kaori and Akira to stay away from him right after he’s bitten, fearing he would hurt them. He keeps an eye on them after he turns into a werewolf and eventually saves their lives, making sure they escape the village.

Natsuno is highly intelligent and observant. He’s one of the first to suspect that vampires have infiltrated the village, and they consider him as big a threat as adult Doctor Ozaki. He and Ozaki orchestrate the humans’ counter attack together, showing that Natsuno is fairly cunning for a teenager. He’s very determined and once he has his mind set, nothing will dissuade him from achieving his goal. This aspect of Natsuno’s personality becomes more pronounced as the series progresses, starting when he learns of the undead’s existence and taken up to eleven after he turns into a werewolf and subsequently decides the Shiki must be annihilated. He's proactive and tends to take command on situations once motivated.

Natsuno’s transformation into a werewolf makes even more standoffish than before, detached from everyone and even humanity as a whole. His goal is to stop the Shiki and he seems to care little about anything else. He shows no concern over his father’s loss of sanity or his mother’s disappearance and avoids people altogether. If he interacts with someone, it’s brief and strictly business, like his meetings with Ozaki. Natsuno doesn’t reach out on an emotional level anymore, the sole exception being with those he cared about when he was still human - he saves Kaori and Akira and watches their reunion, and visits Tohru’s body after the latter’s final death. He’s not completely impenetrable, but he never drops the cold demeanor. Even in his interactions with Tatsumi, whom he clearly despises, Natsuno remains impassive and at most shows cold anger.

He develops a black and white world view, where humans are absolute victims and Shiki are absolute monsters - himself included. When Ozaki states that all Shiki must be destroyed, Natsuno calmly agrees that yes, of course he will have to die as well. The things is though, he has another choice - werewolves don’t need to consume blood, so Natsuno can escape the village easily and keep living as a human. The fact he chooses to stay in the village he hated, helps saving it and eventually sacrifices himself to stop the Shiki shows just how much he hates what he’s become. He refuses to drink blood or use his superhuman abilities until it is absolutely necessary.

Even though Natsuno views himself as a monster, it doesn’t seem to upset him. The biggest indication to his current state of mind is his final confrontation with Tatsumi. When Tatsumi asks him if he doesn’t fear death, Natsuno’s reply is “I died long ago.” For the most part, he’s resigned to the fate he’s chosen. He has a goal to accomplish and no time to lament.

Abilities/Powers:
Natsuno is a Jinrou/”werewolf”. The word doesn’t refer to traditional werewolves, but rather describes a subspecies of Shiki (translated as “corpse-demon”, the name given in canon to what are essentially vampires). Werewolves are very rare, and they’re superior to normal Shiki as they have all the Shiki abilities and none of their weaknesses:

- Immortality and regeneration: they can’t get sick and heal from injuries at superhuman speed. Drugs/poison/anesthetic have no effect on them. The only way to kill them is to destroy their circulatory system, usually by staking the heart or decapitation.

- Drinking blood: They can only consume about two cups worth of blood a day. The first feeding makes the victim lightheaded, the second causes anemia and by the third or fourth feeding the victim dies of shock. They will recover if the Shiki doesn’t feed on them a few days in a row.

- Hypnosis: Shiki can hypnotize and control anyone they bite. The victims don’t remember it - at most they feel they were having vague, strange dreams. Hypnosis only works for the first Shiki to bite, making the victim resistant to other Shiki’s control.

- Physical prowess: Superhuman strength, speed and stamina.

- Enhanced senses: all Shiki can see in absolute dark. Werewolves also have sharper hearing and a superior sense of smell.

- Levitation: Shiki can float in the air for short periods of time, no more than a few stories high. Natsuno isn’t shown using this ability on screen, but it’s safe to assume he’s capable of it.

- Differences between werewolves and Shiki: werewolves aren’t undead. Rather than dying and rising as normal Shiki, they enter a death-like state and transform into werewolves. They breathe, have a pulse and feel warm to touch, making them indistinguishable from humans. Regarding traditional vampire weaknesses, sunlight and religious symbols have no ill effect on werewolves. However they cannot enter a house uninvited. Unlike Shiki, they don’t have to drink human blood and can survive on normal food, but they can’t access their special abilities without blood. It seems like they don’t feel an “agonizing” hunger for blood the way normal Shiki do.

Items/Weapons:
- Wooden cross
- Stake
- Hammer

Sample Entry:
[The voice coming through the cellphone is that of a teenage boy, dry and business like.]

So writing is impossible, but what about drawings? They don’t work either? I realize that everything here dangerous, but some places in particular can use a warning sign. Like that underground garden.

[Slight irritation colors the voice at the mention of the garden - guess who had an unpleasant encounter with man eating vines - but Natsuno is quick to regain his composure. There’s a brief pause and once again his voice is calm.]

Obviously there’s a lot I don’t know yet, so I need you to fill me up on what’s going on. I’m sure you get that a lot but that doesn’t change the fact I’m missing information and there's a limit to what a newcomer can do on his own. Anything you have would be useful.

[Though he wouldn’t necessarily trust everything people say, and he would keep trying to learn as much as possible on his own. There’s another pause, like he’s debating whether to add something, and then:]

That’s all.

serenus: (pic#8412420)

[personal profile] serenus 2014-10-17 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Personality:
At first glance, Kurama can be seen as a soft-spoken and extremely polite teenager. He is respectful to those who are older than he is, uses honorifics when addressing others, and generally keeps a calm and serene tone when talking. On top of his charming personality, he is also incredibly intelligent, claiming the top rank of all his classmates with his perfect test scores. As a result, he is admired by many of his teachers and classmates, both male and female alike (though in certain instances, admiration has gone a little too far, an example being where he was actually threatened to join a science club so the other members could get girlfriends... yeah).

This behavior and lifestyle, however, is nothing more a mask that he wears as the human Shuuichi Minamino. When not in front of the humans of his everyday life, Kurama shows a much different personality than the gentle and polite one he is known for having. Out of the four main protagonists in the series, Kurama is perhaps the most cunning and calculating. He has an analytic eye, and is capable of looking at the situation fully in order to determine what should be done next. This attribute is further seen when he engages in fights, as he chooses to study his opponent’s fighting style first in order to come up with a strategy to bring them down. Likewise, Kurama is capable of becoming emotionally detached during his fights. In doing so, it allows him to plan two or three steps ahead of his opponent to ensure victory, and is even capable of delivering ruthless attacks without serious thought or hesitation.

However, with every great strength lies a weakness, and for Kurama, that is his love and concern for his family. If faced with a situation that risks the lives of those he cares for, Kurama will do whatever it takes to ensure their safety, even if it means self-sacrifice. A prime example of this is seen when we are first introduced to him. Despite having assisted Hiei and Gouki in stealing the King’s Artifacts, he reveals that his intentions are on a completely different level than that of his partners’ and immediately cuts ties with them. With the Forlorn Hope in his possession, Kurama had intended to use its powers to cure his incredibly ill mother. It is then revealed that in order for his wish to be granted, he would have to sacrifice himself. Kurama is more than willing to agree with the circumstances, and we see from the get-go how willing he is to give up his life for his family. Another instance where see Kurama’s weakness used against him is during the Three Kings Saga. When Yomi requests for his help, Kurama questions the possibility of him saying no, and Yomi counters by subtly threatening to end his mother and new stepfather’s lives. Not wanting to cause any harm to them, Kurama agrees to help.

Despite the obvious weakness it holds against him, however, his care for his family works dually; not only does it serve as a major weakness, but it also serves as his strength. When forced to consider their safety, he uses their well-being and overall safety to help keep him focused on the situation at hand. His dedication in keeping them safe drives him to continue onward, even if it means giving up his life.

As we continue to learn about Kurama’s past, we learn that his analytic strength and ability to shun emotion away stems from his demon form. When he retains said form, his personality becomes much colder and merciless. He enjoys toying with his opponents, something we see in his fight with Karasu, and we witness how much more crueler he becomes. He also retains his intellect in his demon form, as noted by Yomi who mentions Kurama being very calculating and always planning three steps ahead of their enemies when they were partners so long ago. From there, we can conclude that Kurama’s experiences as a demon were what helped him become the calculating fighter that he is now.

The characteristics mentioned, however, are only seen when Kurama is faced with serious situations. Of the four main characters, Kurama is perhaps one of the most calm and reserved. More times than not, he is seen as the voice of reason when characters bicker or panic, and he is often looked upon when in need of advice. He is also capable of showing a playful side as well, joking and teasing with his friends when the moment is appropriate.

He holds a very strong bond with his mother, Shiori, something that everyone takes note of right away. As a child, Shiori showered him with love, even when he had been the cause of a terrible accident that left her scarred. It is because of that show of love from her that he feels it impossible to leave her, and it is also the reason as to why he will do whatever it takes to keep her safe. His time with her and his friends has noticeably softened his personality from when he was a demon. He is still capable of becoming ruthless and merciless, however, that side of him only comes out when he is angered.

Abilities/Powers:
The most notable ability Kurama has is plant manipulation. By feeding certain seeds and plants his demon energy, he is capable of accelerating its growth and change it entirely. His most used and perhaps infamous form of manipulation is when he brings forth his rosewhip. Other forms of manipulation include the attack Petals and Thorns, where rose petals surround him and attack as soon as an opponent comes within a certain range. He can also summon a handful of demon plants with his energy. Such plants include the Seed of the Death Plant, the Bloodsucking Plant, and the Sinning Tree. Along with growth acceleration, he can also control certain plants and use them to his advantage, as seen when he steals the key from Yanagisawa in the House of Four Dimensions.

Plant manipulation aside, however, Kurama is highly intelligent, and is able to effectively figure out any riddles his opponents might throw at him (as seen when he faces off with Kaito). He is even capable of devising a plan on the spot. Additionally, Kurama has a sharp eye, and is thus attentive to details. He uses this to his advantage in battles and studies his opponents in order to gain the upper hand. Unfortunately, his habit of doing so has more times than not left him critically wounded (particularly around his abdomen), so it’s a wonder if studying to learn about their fighting style is even worth it…

Other abilities that Kurama has includes having a strong sense of smell and the ability to read lips. He's also talented in remaining emotionless when faced with danger or threats, which lets him gain an upper hand on his opponents. He also has the patience of a saint, at least in comparison to the other three protagonists, so when the others panic or start to become annoyed, Kurama does what he can to keep his head cool so he can figure shit out.

Items/Weapons: nothing but the clothes on his back, and the handful of plant seeds in his hair.

Sample Entry:
[ fortunately for Kurama, it doesn't take long for him to figure out how this device works. soon enough, Kurama begins the recording, eager to reach out to whoever it is that's listening. ]

... it's ironic that this place is called Haven. The word itself holds a sort of warmth and hopeful vibe to it. However, when seeing the condition of the town, there's an entirely different feeling. Almost like a physical contradiction. [ he pauses. ] ... the lack of greenery certainly adds to the eeriness as well. [ time to find that garden.. ]

Regardless, I have one request only. If possible, I'd like to hear more information pertaining this place. Who it is that summoned us, what their purpose for having us here is... anything would suffice. Thank you in advance. [ and with that, the feed ends. ]

Sample Entry Two:
He wasn't sure when unconsciousness overtook him, but as soon as it started to fade, his eyes slowly opening to the real world, he could tell that something wasn't right. Letting out a soft groan, he shifted from his spot, moving to stand. Taking in the surroundings, he knew right away that he was not where he supposed to be. An unfamiliar room, and an unfamiliar scenery framed within the nearby window. Even the scent in the air was enough to tell him that he was no longer in the Human World, nor in the Demon World.

Shifting up from the bed, he stretched slightly to relieve the soreness in his body. He wondered briefly how long he had been out... though more importantly he wondered how. Inspecting his arms, he couldn't smell any lingering scent that could indicate who -- or what -- brought him here. Frustration further brewed, though he soon moved to stand, heading towards the window. The billboard in the distance quickly captured his attention, and soon his brows furrowed. "In Haven... we are all safe... together...?" He wondered what exactly that meant, and what the gas masks on the people represented.

Still, the billboard puzzle was the last of his concerns. He needed answers regarding this world, how he arrived, and who else was here. From the looks of it, he was the only one in the room at the moment. Attention shifting towards the door, he cautiously made his way over. Hand reaching out for the knob, he turned it, opening the door and carefully headed out of the room. Unfortunately, the next room was just as devoid of people as the one that he had woken up in. Perhaps he was the only one in this particular room so far...

Kurama's brows furrowed once more as he debated what to do next. He wondered if looking for the others would be a smart decision, but considering that he hadn't been able to sense any of their signature energies, he figured it'd be futile. "Troubling..." Despite his frustrations, though, he knew what he had to do. He needed to press further, and investigate this world some more.

Hopefully doing so would answer some of the questions that lingered within his mind...

Personality:
Hiei is not really any different from most demons in the world he comes from. His past is dark but he doesn’t talk about it very often, if at all. The only people who really know of his history is the man who gave him his Jagan, Yusuke Urameshi and Kurama. He places no faith in people outside his small circle of those he refuses to call ‘friends’ even though he places his trust in them, and feels very comfortable that way. Hiei is, however, very much shaped by the trauma of being tossed to his ‘death’ off of the Koorime Island for being born male. He was able to see, hear, and clearly understand what was being done to him even as an infant, a by-product of bring born incredibly powerful, and how he survived the fall and remembers to this day what happened in pain staking detail. He keeps a small circle of ‘friends’ because he was often abandoned as a child, first by the Koorime and then the bandits who raised him after finding him in a river. From that point forward he has remained either alone, with Team Urameshi or in the company of the former King Mukuro.

Though many know of him, it’s a far stretch to say many people truly know Hiei. They may claim to, but in the long and short of things, they truthfully do not. He puts little effort into making and retaining partnerships or friendships with those he feels he cannot trust, and often expects those around him to simply accept things for what they are. Often he seems to belittle those who carry strong emotions tied to others, often mocking and less than understanding when it comes to matters of the heart or of ‘feelings.’ Everything in life, to Hiei, is a survival tactic, and everyone would do better to remember that over silly matters of feelings or ‘the heart.’ At least, this is what he projects on the surface.

Particularly toward humans and those he considers weaker than himself, Hiei is largely taciturn. When meeting new people he hardly bothers to speak unless it’s to insult them or tell them they’re wrong. The amount he speaks to individuals seems to be directly related to his level of respect for them. As such, with the little respect he has for Kuwabara, most of his interaction with him seems to making fun of him or completely discounting his intelligence. The same goes for other strangers that he isn’t as familiar with. However with Kurama and Yusuke, he has been known and seen to carry out longer conversations on tactics and other things. Not that they are anything spectacular, as these conversations are usually still considered short by most people’s standards, but for Hiei any long period spent speaking is generally a sign of respect or general appreciation. The only person who he doesn’t seem to mock, and is indeed quite warm towards is his twin sister Yukina, though he refuses to tell her that he is the twin brother she has been looking for all of these years. But that can mostly be left up to sibling favoritism. If chalked up to his emotions he will most likely react aversely. Though Hiei would like to project to all that he has very little in the way of emotions, and that his partnerships are purely products of their usefulness – such as his classic mention that Kurama was his ally simply because he wouldn’t wish to make an enemy of him – it’s quite the opposite.

Once a person earns Hiei’s trust and respect, he would be willing to defend them, even to the death if that’s what it calls for. He shows this in Kurama’s battle against Bakken, when the demon was beating an unconscious Kurama during the Dark Tournament. Hiei was willing to forfeit the entire tournament in order to defend his partner in crime and ally, along with the other members of Team Urameshi. He was also willing to die in honor of Yusuke Urameshi after his ‘death’ against Sensui alongside the other members of team Urameshi. It’s this exact same deep sense of honor that drives Hiei to kill other demons for using back handed tactics against those who were supposed to be their allies, or those who otherwise ‘cheat’ when it comes to their demonic powers or trained abilities.

Despite Hiei’s insistence that he has something like a dirt filled heart, it’s not really true at all. Hiei is simply very conscious about how he expresses things like affection and respect, and exists in shades and subtleties. His respect for Kurama is only shown in his willingness to defend the spirit fox turned human, just as he will only protect his ‘secret’ twin sister from the shadows. He refuses to tell Yukina that he is her brother because he thinks that she will not want a felon for a brother – and the fact that he promised his silence on his identity to Shigure in exchange for his Jagan – but he does, on some level, seem to care deeply for those around him who have managed to wriggle their way in to his little shriveled heart, even if he may seem more resentful for that fact than willing to accept their affections or his own.

It’s important to note that Hiei is unbiased when it comes to making friends, enemies, and allies. Gender, as well a demon or human race doesn’t seem to matter so long as the other person he is considering is useful at the moment. After that moment of usefulness, however, he isn’t really known to stick around. This also extends to enemies and those he intends to get rid of. Hiei will doggedly and fearlessly chase everything he wishes to achieve until he achieves it, even if it means sacrificing all of his hard-earned power for a Jagan eye, or his right arm for the Darkness Flame.

He has a rather cynical and misanthropic view of the world and all that goes on in it, and has no problem sharing his feelings of these sorts of things if it’s warranted or not. He has been known to crush a lot of optimistic theories in his time, and doesn’t seem to be bothered by the negative reactions he’s gotten because of it. He tends to belittle the importance most people place on their own lives and friendships. He seems to regard everything as transient, and remains aloof so as not to grow attached to one person or group of people to the point of weakness. Hiei is completely focused on training for strength and being the strongest, so it shouldn’t be surprising that he places his training before anything and everyone. Well, not exactly everyone, because if someone were to mention Yukina was in peril, or Kurama was to call, he might be tempted to skip out of Makai in two slow thuds of his tiny shriveled little demon heart.

Hiei is an infant by demon standards, being somewhere near 50 years old. Yet he is still known in the demon world for his sheer power despite his size, as well as a fiery temper to match his demon classification. His age my occasionally lead Hiei in to imprudence caused by a combination of hot temper and youth, but the young fire demon has, so far, shown a great amount of promise.

Abilities/Powers:
Despite barely standing 4’11” tall (excluding his hair), Hiei is an extremely competent, extremely powerful fighter. His demon abilities from both the Koorime and fire demon parts of his genetics have formed together in the most advantageous way they could have when it came to Hiei’s power level. At the age of five he was said to have risen to the rank of A-Class youki status, which is only one rank below the most powerful demons in S class, which is a rank he retains now. He is a ruthless killer and master swordsman, as taught by Shigure after gaining his Jagan eye. Hiei is resistant to both extreme heat and extreme cold. His unique body chemistry makes him invulnerable to flames of most types, the only fire to date able to burn him and destroy his flesh was the dragon of the darkness flame, which controlling in itself is a legendary feat. His unique body chemistry, as the son of an ice apparition and a fire demon ,may be the cause of this unique ability. Though it has often been mistaken for the ability to teleport, Hiei is simply very fast. He has previously sliced an enemy sixteen times in the blink of an eye, and moves so fast that he has been known to leave a tangible after image.

He also possesses a surgically implanted third eye in his forehead – better known as the Jagan or ‘Evil Eye.’ Because of this he has a wide range of psychic abilities, including telepathy, remote-viewing, and memory erasure. It also allows him to control lower class demons and of course, humans. The Jagan also allows him a special Jaganashi – or Evil Eye Practitioner – form. In this form, the power of his Jagan is greatly increased, enhancing his already-great speed, allowing him to paralyze his foes with a binding curse, bolstering his physical strength, and giving him the capacity to summon multiple dragons. Its weakness is that if anything blinds the Jagan while Hiei is in this form, he will be unable to utilize its powers to the fullest extent. He hardly ever uses this form, though, presumably because of it’s obvious weaknesses.

His most powerful attacks are that of the Darkness Flame, fire he summons from the pits of Demon world that forms into the shape of a dragon. These flames, when used, completely consume all that they devour, meaning everything from stone to organic bodies of all types. Essentially, all targets are sent into oblivion. Only a few, very powerful foes have been able to repel the hellfire creature, which makes it a remarkably useful weapon of intimidation. However, after using this dragon technique, he must go into a state of hibernation in order to recover his spirit and demon energies for the next battle. The darkness flame can also be bent into a sword, and into a smaller version, called the Deadly Flame of Hell.

He also has the ability to channel less powerful flames from the human world into one or both of his hands. This is called the ‘Purgatory Scorch’ or ‘Fist of the Mortal Flame.’ This not only enhances his hand-to-hand combat skills, but allows him to disintegrate objects with a touch. The power level of this attack greatly depends on whether Hiei attacks with it on one hand or both. The same flames can be used in a long range flame thrower attack, though he hardly ever uses this technique in preference of closer combat.

Personality: On the surface, Hinata seems like someone who's cynical, a pessimist. If he doesn't feel like something is right, he'll bring it up rather than be quiet about it, and it has others believe him to be a kinda pessimistic fellow. But though he does seem like this on the outside, he'd much rather think of the brighter side of situations deep down. If something seems fishy to him, but there's enough reason to believe it's happier than it lets on, then he'll try to believe those reasons as well as he can instead of believing the worst. Such as right from the start, when the students arrived at the island, he was the only student who thought a random island field trip was odd, and he kept pressing he thoughts until the other students convinced him everything was fine. He eventually believed them, and got ready to begin his peaceful field trip. Of course, unfortunately it was only peaceful for a little while, and from then on Hinata became less gullible to seemingly happy situations. Though, he still held onto a small hope that it'd be fine in the end, which pushed him forward and kept him from going completely insane in the murder filled world he was living in.

Though that isn't to say he didn't let absolutely nothing get to him, as he's the type of person to be easily annoyed and to not put up with others inane antics, as long as they weren't from a friend anyway. If you ask him to do something ridiculous and you AREN'T friends with him, it's likely he'll tell you to ask someone else. However, if you ARE his friend and ask the same thing, he'd inwardly complain but in the end he'd follow along. He's surprisingly easy to push around in that regard once you're close to him.

And on the subject of friends, Hinata's someone who definitely cares for his bonds with others, even if he doesn't show it out-rightly. He has a hard time even calling others his friends, but if you're someone he cares about, you'll notice. He's pretty nice to everyone, out-rightly, but to those he's formed a bond with, he shows legitimate interest in them. If you're a friend, or someone he wants to befriend, he'll try to instigate and continue conversations even if they've been cut off awkwardly, and he does so by asking questions to get to know you better. He almost never talks about himself at all, in fact, he's much more interested in others and likes to hear about their stories and thoughts on subjects, and because of this Kuzuryuu once told him that his Super High School Level talent probably had to do with therapy. So, he's someone who genuinely cares for and likes his friends, and he's often the person they all go to for their worries. (Sometimes, he even ends up caring for people he didn't originally think he cared about!)

Though, he can be pretty blunt at times, even to people he cares about. If you do something he doesn't like, or if you say something or act stupid, he'll tell you straight up without really caring if it's harsh. He does hold back some of these harsher thoughts though, as he tends to think before speaking. If it's a comment he knows he shouldn't say, he'll hold it back or say it in a bit of a kinder or more roundabout way.

He's also a pretty smart cookie! He's quick to pick up on hints or solve puzzles, and he's usually pretty good at thinking of situations in different and unique ways. Heck, during pretty much all of the class trials, Hinata was the one who figured out the mysteries of all of the murders, with only a few clues and after bouncing off some ideas with his classmates. The most remarkable trial he solved being Komaeda's, where he figured out Komaeda set up a suicide/accidental murder, initially by understanding what kind of person Komaeda was. He understood that Komaeda wouldn't have been killed so easily, and a suicide/murder set up by luck was exactly what Komaeda would do.

So even though the other classmates do bounce their own ideas off of him, in the end Hinata's the one who puts all the pieces together.
protagonisms: (∅10; this I know)

[personal profile] protagonisms 2014-10-17 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
He also has a very good gut feeling or sixth sense, where he can easily tell when something or someone had bad intentions. Like as stated before, he was the only one who thought the island trip was weird, and he also was the only one later on who thought a fake Naegi set up by Monokuma in the last trial was acting strange. He also could sense Komaeda's evil intentions the most out of everyone, even beyond how Komaeda acted he could just.. feel a very bad vibe coming off the guy, and it had him actually scared of him. Though as the series progressed, he attempted to understand Komaeda better so he could understand his true intentions and motives and hopefully prevent him from doing anything crazy, and it helped him tolerate Komaeda better.

Which brings me to my next point, Hinata's an easy adapter. He can tolerate situations easier than most people, and he gets used to them faster as well. As long as he believes everything will turn out fine, he's able to adapt to almost everything. He was even able to investigate dead bodies and execute his classmates, his friends, easier as the days progressed. By the time Komaeda's trial, the last murder trial, came around, he investigated the body with ease even though it was the most brutally "murdered" one of all. And it's all because of him persevering, and holding onto the hope that he'll make it out okay. That everything is going to be okay.

Though, his ability to adapt well did backfire, as there was a situation he just... couldn't adapt to.

You see, from when he was young Hinata was a person with low confidence within himself. He idolized Hope's Peak Academy, because it was a school made for people with talent, with confidence, and his idolization eventually had his parents paying for him to attend. Though, because he was talentless, he was placed within a Reserve Course, for other talentless students like him who had to pay to get in. He was stoked, at first, but he got dirty looks and students talking about him behind his back, which only resulted in his self confidence not getting any higher. And eventually, he joined a project set up by the school, either by his own will by force. It was a project to make the best, most talented person in the world. A person that would bring true hope, the Ultimate Hope. (Or Super High School Level Hope but it doesn't have the same impact so I apologize for not using it immediately.)

They wiped his memories and personality, and preformed experiments on him, physically messing with his brain to make him filled with talents and to raise his IQ significantly. He was basically turned into an emotionless.. well computer, with how much knowledge he had. They named him Izuru Kamakura, after the founder of Hope's Peak Academy, and they tried to make sure he would lead the world in hope. Though what they didn't expect was him falling into Super High School Level Despair, thanks to Junko. He killed thirteen student council members, which sparked up more killing, and eventually riots. Sacrifices. Bloodshed. Despair. He was the beginning of the most tragic incidents in history, and he found out about this during the final trial. He learned that the island he had come to know was all a virtual world, and that his memories of his life in Hope's Peak Academy had been erased to rehabilitate himself almost, so he didn't have to live as Izuru but as Hinata. So upon learning about this past, about how his precious school betrayed him and it was his fault one way or another that the world was falling apart... he started falling apart. And he was eventually given two very hard choices in the end: either return to the waking world as Izuru, no memories of what had happened within this "school trip", or he'd awaken as Hinata with these memories full in tact, but the bodies of those friends who had "died" would be taken over by Junko if he chose to awaken as Hinata.

Of course, he couldn't make a choice. Either save his friends and keep Junko from spreading more despair around the world while erasing himself completely, or keep himself intact and let his friends and others suffer. He couldn't take the stress of the choice, the heartbreak and confusion of his past.. he couldn't adapt to this situation on his own and thus, he broke down.

Though, with the help of Nanami, she convinced him that he could make his own future. Even if he went into the world as Izuru Kamakura, she convinced him that he didn't need to stay that way. That he could shape his future and that everything would be alright in the end as long as he believed in himself. Believed in hope. So... that's what he did. He believed in hope, and in Nanami, and well. He believed everything would turn out alright in the end, and he was able to make the decision to sacrifice himself for the sake of everyone else.

Abilities/Powers: Hinata.. doesn't really have many abilities at all. And he's completely powerless, as well.

He didn't have a Super High School Level talent unlike the others, he's not exceptionally strong or fast or endurable to pain. But, as explained in the personality section, he does have the ability to adapt to situations pretty well. And he's pretty smart, able to pick up clues and solve things easily enough. That's.. about it though. Super Protag Level friendship?
Items/Weapons: The clothes he was wearing in the New World Program, and a shard of a broken saké cup.
Sample Entry: Here!
Sample Entry Two: When Hinata woke up, he still felt the grogginess from sleep within his body. He opened his eyes slowly, to the feeling of a breeze softly blowing through his hair. And what greeted him surprised him. He.. well, he expected to have woken up in some kind of world that had been put through despair and destruction, but for one thing to go from inside a virtual world to somewhere outside.. it seemed highly unlikely. He should have woken up within some kind of lab or something, shouldn't he?

Carefully, he sat up and got to his feet, brushing the gravel off his pants and shirt where he could reach. And he was able to get a good enough look around the place. This.. definitely wasn't what he was expecting to see as soon as he woke up. In fact.. he didn't remember sleeping or actually leaving the Neo World, either. It would make sense though, if it weren't for the fact that he wasn't supposed to remember said Neo World in the first place. Maybe a glitch happened, and he was able to keep his memories after all? That would be wishful thinking, but it was possible wasn't it?

"..if this is how the world is now, I should get used to what I'm seeing, I guess."

There was no point in being dissatisfied if this was reality.. but he just couldn't help feeling that something was wrong with this place. Perhaps he should go looking for the others, or for anyone else really, before coming to solid conclusions about his situation?

So, he began walking, taking in the sights and making mental notes here and there. It was.. eerily quiet, he noticed. Not something he'd expect from what he heard about the state of the world. There should be people running amok, smashing buildings or killing civilians. But it seemed as if this place had been abandoned quite a long time ago.. maybe it was one of the first places they hit up?

"No, that's not right. This should be Jabberwock Island, the real Jabberwock Island... it was supposed to be untouched by Super High School Level Despair, wasn't it?" Right, that's why they were able to put the Remaining Despair in the Neo World Program, because this island was safe. So why was it like this now? Just what happened that could've wiped it out but still kept at least Hinata's body in tact?

"... Haven..?"

It seems Hinata's questions had been answered, as he came across a particular billboard. 'In Haven, we are all safe... together.' it read. So the reason why Jabberwock Island had been so easily destroyed and abandoned was because....

"I'm not.. on Jabberwock Island?"

Personality:
Gundam Tanaka is no ordinary Animal Breeder. You'd probably assume that just by looking at him, but there's more to him than meets the eye. While he is an animal breeder, he also has a deep, genuine love for the creatures he tends to - and all animals in general, really. He has extensive knowledge of many different species, though seems to favor hamsters the most, and will gladly impart this knowledge upon those who seek or need it. Most likely more to help the animals than the people he's speaking to. The breeder runs a blog about his activities and seems to have many people running small breeder projects around the world for him, and honestly understands animals much better than he does humans.

He is also a very gentle person at heart. He mentions how he pities livestock, being raised and domesticated only to be eaten by humans. His "omnipotent powers" cannot change their fate, so he avoids associating with them to avoid having to think too often about this fate. This is likely because he understands animals so well, and so it's hard for him to see that. He also would eat his mother's food no matter how awful it was, just to avoid making her cry. His murder wasn't one to save himself, but to keep the rest of his classmates from starving. It's hinted in the trial, once it had been revealed, that he knew there was a good chance he'd been caught and yet he went through with it anyway. Even in the face of his execution, he gives his remaining classmates a speech, telling them to treasure the life they have rather than giving up and waiting for death, indicating that he cared for them more than he really let on.

Of course, none of this is immediately apparent when you meet him. The first thing he might ask you is if you deserve to speak with him, or if you want to dare introduce yourself to a dark god like himself. He will probably warn you of how dangerous it is to touch him, for poison runs through his veins and to touch him is certain death. There are likely a number of evil, dark things he would, could and probably will say to you, but these mostly stem from a rather grandiose persona that he's created to hide his gentle, lonely nature.

He claims he's the child of a demon and an angel, that he hails from the underworld and possesses magical powers, though the only example ever given to us in canon did not seem to do anything. Gundam is theatrical in appearance, speech and how he holds himself, putting on an eccentric display whenever it seems fitting to him which is usually most of the time.

The way he talks often times makes him seem as though he's a loner who would prefer not to interact with others, though this seems not to be the case at all. There are a few instances where he seems to hover just outside of the group, seemingly wanting to be invited but refusing to invite himself. This hints that he is perhaps lonelier and would enjoy human contact more than he lets on. Even if many of his interactions tend to be a little off putting to some or he tells others to stay away.

The confidence put forth with this boisterous and eccentric persona is probably fabricated to hide insecurities. He mentions once that anything able to speak will betray you someday, hinting that he had been hurt by humans before. His lonely nature likely stems from this problem as well, wanting to be a part of things but not wanting to be hurt again. When he does make friends, however, they are friends for life, going so far as to make a pact with them stating that they cannot die without his permission.

Abilities/Powers: Super High School Level Animal Breeder; Extensive knowledge of animals and how to care for them.

Items/Weapons: He will be bringing in his four hamsters, which live on his person, in his scarf.

Sample Entry:

Foul beast! [What the teenager was yelling at wasn't immediately apparent, as he was just standing in the middle of the garden seemingly yelling at nothing. Anyone familiar with the garden could probably guess, though, considering the nut-like objects lying around his feet.]

Show yourself, you coward, so that you may be swiftly destroyed at the hands of Gundam Tanaka! This time you will not escape so easily into your foxhole, swine!

[Like each time before, when the creature popped up from it's nest and shot it's nut, instead of deflecting the spherical object he knocked it aside and attempted to pounce, hitting the ground hard just as it retreated. Pounding his fists against the ground, he began to dig uselessly at it's leaves.]

I won't be made a fool of by some devil plant! My Four Dark Devas of Destruction could easily devour you whole, you pathetic creature! I dare you to show your face to me! Allow me to laugh upon your frightened gaze and tear at your hide until nothing is left of you!

[This fight would not be ending any time soon.]

Sample Entry Two:

They had asked a simple task of him. One much more fitting to mortals like them, but he did not complain as he agreed to take it upon himself to complete. If they deemed this task something only a devil like himself could accomplish, then who was he to force it upon one of them? No, this would be his burden and his burden alone. Cleaning utensils in hand, Gundam turned to face the dirty apartment. But where would he even start?

"Surely though there is more I could do to assist than simply dusting our quarters..." Something more fitting of a man such as himself. Something that would utilize his great abilities! They wouldn't let him look for food anymore, and gathering supplies was apparently not a talent of his (though he still argues that those rune stones he brought back were not mere rocks and could have helped them greatly), so there had to be something more than cleaning he could do.

"Is this truly how they wish to use my powers?! No...perhaps this was a veiled request. Perhaps what they truly wanted to ask of me was in a tongue too foreign for them to speak, and so when they said they merely wanted me to 'clean' the room, they were attempting to communicate some form of message!" There's a deep laugh as he drops all but the makeshift broom to the floor, clutching that tool tightly and raising it into the air.

"Do not fear, my young apostles!! I, Gundam Tanaka, have received your message! You were smart to intrust such an important task with me, and you will not be disappointed!" Turning the broom around, he began using the end of the stick to draw a large circle in the middle of the room. Once that was completely, inside of this circle he began to write a spell in a language only he could read. He would spend the rest of the day leaving protection circles in the dust rather than clean anything up.

Character Name: James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes
Canon: Marvel Comics 616
Canon Point: March 1945; Sometime after his mission with Captain America and Deadpool
Background/History: Link
Previous Game History: N/A
Personality: Bucky is a boy in a mask, both literally and figuratively. As a child his mother died when he was an adolescent and his father was an instructor at a military base. It was up to him to be the anchor in the family for his little sister Rebecca. As Bucky refers to it, he had to wear a mask of bravery for her. That was his job, to be her clown and good-natured big brother that stood by her like a mother. The three of them stuck together to put on a good show for public that they were a stable, normal family. Of course, there is a darker side to Bucky outside his easygoing and extroverted personality.

Without ambitions of his own outside of keeping the family together and the stress it put on him, Bucky channeled his frustration, aggression, and the hot temper he inherited from his father into fighting. As he explains he was angry at the whole world. Always angry inside. The disappointment he brought his father stung and, while he could never break the cycle of violence, he always wanted to make his father proud of him. Unfortunately, the last thing his father ever said to him was an admonishment when he got caught fighting yet again. That same day his father died in a freak accident, leaving him all alone on a military base with his sister shipped off to a boarding school.

All he has left is his father's disappointment in him, a wayward attitude he can't escape, and his brave mask. For the next four years, Bucky latches onto the enlisted men in the camp for inspiration. He sees in them the path to manhood: aggression, a loud and mouthy attitude, the power to protect and defend their country and the people they love. His mask grows to encompass these traits. This transformation is most obviously shown through his superficial swagger and quick-witted tongue. When a soldier at the base asks where he's been, Bucky tells him he was at the house of the man's girlfriend. He even gives Captain America a run for his money with that mouth of his. Despite being the little brother in the partnership, Bucky's big personality eclipses Captain America's more subdued and quiet one. He calls him Tiger and his boy, as if Bucky is the one really in charge. It's this kind of playful attitude and one upmanship that he learned from talking and immersing himself within military culture. He enjoys the culture wholly and embraces it, finds pleasure in learning to fight, to defend and protect others. It earns him respect from the base population at large. And that respect is something he craves; he finds it through being useful.

Unable to prove himself to his father any longer, the men at the base are a good substitute. Unburdened by strict rules and curfew, he has found a niche that makes him rather indispensable in the eyes of his older brothers as a smuggler. Using his charming, easygoing personality and wit, he is able to easily smuggle in all kinds of contraband into the base from nearby town that the enlisted men would sell their right arm for. And they do. Even the officers bend knee to Bucky's skills, and invariably he becomes something of a camp mascot even before donning his official costume.

It isn't until he is trained to become Captain America's sidekick that he can put down his mask and replace it with another. But in a lot of ways, his new mask is much more of a burden than the former. As a trained assassin and soldier, he can now put his violent tendencies to more productive use; however, his insecurities as a boy in a man's world are only amplified along with his need to prove himself. Along with Captain America, a group of super human fighters are formed called the Invaders. Bucky's the only average human among them, making him try that much harder to keep up with them. But try as he might, one of the Invaders constantly berates him for his average strength and reflexes and refers to him as a waste of space at times. This wounds Bucky more than a stranger's mocking derision. Generally when someone makes fun of him or comments on his age, he reacts violently and usually start a fight. This happens regularly over all iterations of Bucky. Someone calls him a kid and soon enough he's making them eat their words. It happens like clockwork, but with someone he respects Bucky can only hide inward and lick his wounds in private. He considers what he can do to compensate for the disappointment and prove them wrong just like when his father was upset with him. But unlike extra chores and apologies, this devolves into something more self-destructive.

During a mission in Africa, Bucky receives a secret assignment to assassinate a Baron who will sew the seeds that creates the future group known as Hydra. And in order to fulfill his mission for the American government, he lets himself be kidnapped, beaten, and potentially sacrificed just so he can get that much closer to his target. It is something Captain America admonishes him for when he learns of this secret assignment, but not because Bucky isn't capable, but because it is reckless and not part of their image as righteous heroes. But Bucky tells him that this is what he's trained for. He is regularly given orders that go beyond what Captain America can do because his public image is too important to tarnish. Bucky will do what has to be done, the unspeakable things, in order to keep Captain America looking good in the citizens' eyes. This mission is a dark look into the attitude of a boy trained to be an unstoppable, unflinching force in the War.

Another example is during his time in the future when he's been held in a cell by Tony Stark and his Mighty Avengers. Just like everyone else, they underestimate him because he is only an average human and it comes around to bite them in the ass. Pulling out a fake nail that doubles as a razor blade, he cuts open his arm where he stores wrapped explosives for emergencies such as these. As shown here and in other examples, Bucky has an unhealthy drive to be worthy of his place as Captain America's partner, going so far as to sew explosives into his arm in case he needs to rescue himself or others. These are the lengths he goes to show and prove to others that he is more than a boy sidekick.

This need does not outgrow him, unfortunately. Even after his "death" in 1945 and inevitable resurrection in New York during the twenty-first century, he still compares himself harshly against Captain America and everything he stood for as a super-soldier and symbol to the American public. When he considers his friends, he places Sam and Natasha in that category, but not Captain America. As much as he loves the man as a brother, he apparently didn't and doesn't feel like he can be vulnerable in front of the man. To the bitter end he must come off as confident and dependable. This is all something he struggles with behind the devil-may-care mask.

Abilities/Powers: He was trained by British Special Air Services. He's skilled in hand-to-hand combat and martial arts. Despite being young and small, he's learned how to take men down twice his size and fight alongside super humans like Captain America and Namor. He's also fluent in French, German, Japanese, and Russian.

He's an incredible marksman with sniper rifles, assault rifles, pistols, and throwing knives.

Bucky is also a skilled acrobatic and saboteur, which makes him an excellent recon scout and assassin. He's a badass monkey basically.

Items/Weapons: His awesome ass super hero suit (tights, shorts, shirt, domino mask, nothing all that novel), .45 caliber Thompson sub-machine gun, and his war diary.

Character Name: Peter Jason Quill, a.k.a, Star-Lord
Canon: Guardians of the Galaxy - Marvel Cinematic Universe
Canon Point: Post film
Background/History: http://marvel-movies.wikia.com/wiki/Peter_Quill

Personality: Peter Jason Quill is an asshole.

Or at the very least, he was raised to be an asshole. Immediately after the death of his mother, Peter was kidnapped as a boy from Earth in 1988 by a gang of space pirates called the Ravagers. While Peter never found out the original intention of his abduction (which was for the Ravagers to drop him off to his biological father), the captain of the pirate gang, Yondu Udonta, brought Peter into the fold and taught him the tricks of the trade. Twenty-six years pass under Yondu’s wing, and Peter kind of became a dick. He has no aversions to committing crime; in fact, he seems to take some pride in his work, taking on the alias “Star-Lord” and hoping to make a name for himself.

Even so, Peter has always had something of an altruistic streak. As a kid, he would defend helpless animals against bullies; and as an adult, he found himself risking life and limb several times over in the span of only a few days to help a ragtag group of criminals save the galaxy from some crazy, nigh unstoppable dude called Ronan the Accuser. He’s a strange mix of self-centered and selfless (he characterizes himself as “an a-hole, but not 100% a dick”) in that he’s perfectly okay in riding the grey area between morality and immorality. As an example, at one point in the film, they realize their MacGuffin (the “Orb”) actually houses a dangerous and powerful Infinity Stone (a deadly weapon said to be as old as the universe itself, which only the extremely powerful and strong could wield; all others were destroyed in their attempts to harness it). Naturally, the Big Bad is trying to get his hands on the stone. The only planet with the means to keep it safe is Xandar, where the team is wanted for arrest. While Peter knows the team has to keep the Infinity Stone out of Ronan’s hands, his idea consists of finding a new buyer for the Stone, which has the happy outcome of turning them a profit and keeping them out of prison.

He realizes this is a mistake, however, and eventually has a change of heart, knowing that only the Nova Corps on Xandar can protect the Orb; he rallies his companions and they join together as a team. As the film progresses, he puts himself on the line for his newfound friends - braving the vacuum of space, risking death-by-crash-landing, and taking on the all-consuming energies of a destructive Infinity Stone to protect his companions and, by proxy, the people of the galaxy.

Of his companions in the film – that being an assassin, two thugs, and a maniac – Peter is the most well-adjusted and, for lack of a better term, “normal.” That isn’t to say he doesn’t have baggage of his own, though. His biggest issue is his inability to really move forward with his life. He clings to the few belongings he had on him on the day of his abduction and protects them fiercely, preserving his last connections to Earth. Twenty-six years pass, and he still owns the clothes he had on his back when he was a child, still has the gift his mother gave him on her deathbed (unopened -- opening it, after all, would break the seal on the time capsule), and still has his music player. His Sony Walkman and the accompanying cassette tape, “Awesome Mix Vol. 1,” also gifts from his mom, are his most prized possessions, and he’s basically listened to them everyday for the past twenty-six years. His gregariousness can make him seem like an open book, but he keeps the more painful memories of his past close to his heart. For instance, the closest he gets to telling anyone of his history is when he speaks with Gamora, and rather than mention the moment of his mother’s passing, he dithers and instead calls it “the day [he] left Earth.” At the end of the film, though, it seems he’s slowly learning to move forward with his life, as shown when he finally opens the gift from his mother, left wrapped and untouched for nearly three decades. (Surprise, it’s a brand new mix tape, “Awesome Mix Vol. 2.”)

To the uninitiated, Peter can seem pretty easy to read, and for the most part he wears his emotions on his sleeve. On the surface, he looks to be the carefree type, the kind of person who never really takes anything seriously or considers things like “responsibilities” as largely optional. An irrepressible flirt, Peter is charismatic, gregarious, and confident to a fault. He tends to talk too much, making up stories or referencing pop culture from his childhood that no one really cares about, much less wants to hear. In the face of danger, he’s never afraid to make a joke or sarcastic quip (or challenge his enemies to a dance-off). Because of that, people tend to think of him as an idiot, a fool, or an easy mark.

The reality is, Peter is clever and resourceful, though, yes, he’s definitely irresponsible and, at times, immature. Despite his tendency to babble, he’s frequently able to talk his way out of most sticky situations. Failing that, he plays the part he’s expected to play, feigning ignorance, weakness, or ineptitude long enough to set his hastily cobbled-together plans into motion. He’s a pretty good actor when the situation calls for it, slipping into roles and changing his speech and mannerisms as needed: with a businessman, he’s polite, professional, and complimentary; with a blood-thirsty killing machine, he’s deferent and points out his own battle-scars; with a Ravager, he mimics their speech patterns and speaks the language of money. And if that doesn’t work? Violence is always an option.

Abilities/Powers: Despite appearances to the contrary (appearances being that Peter looks and acts like a dumbass), Peter is skilled with firearms and in hand-to-hand combat (at one point he’s shown to be able to hold his own against the deadliest woman in the galaxy). He’s an adept pilot, as well, though I doubt that will come into play here???

Aside from that, though, he’s a normal human — for the most part, anyway. At the end of the film, it’s revealed that Peter was born from a human mother and an alien father. His father’s race currently remains unknown (he most likely will not share the same origins as his comic book counterpart), but it is believed to be something ancient; they surmise that because of his unknown half, he was able to withstand the power of the Infinity Stone longer than expected. What other perks his alien origins might provide are as yet unknown.

Items/Weapons:
  • His helmet, which is activated/deactivated with an attachment he wears over his ear
  • Two quad blasters
  • Sony Walkman and cassette tape(s) — Awesome Mix Volume 1 (and Awesome Mix Volume 2, if possible)

Sample Entry: one | two
Sample Entry Two:
For Peter, this particular journey to consciousness is not unlike stripping away the layers of an onion.

The first thing he's aware of is pain, and he thinks maybe his body had the right idea about being unconscious. Unconsciousness isn't that bad of a thing, really, so maybe he should stay that way? But it's a shame he never learns, because he knows he's waking by degrees, now. His head aches and his right shoulder throbs, warning him of a possible dislocation, and he thinks he may be lying on his stomach, judging by the way his right arm is pinned awkwardly beneath his weight and how his cheek is resting against something rough and unyielding.

The second layer comes away when he opens his eyes and is greeted with darkness. So that sucks, but in a way, he's grateful, because with the way his brains were apparently jostled, even the idea of light is enough to make his jaw clench; in a few moments, though, he knows the darkness is going to start eating away at him, and panic starts simmering in his gut.

Pins and needles shoot up his other arm and legs, so at least those are still there, at least he can still feel them. Reassuring, in a way, but not by much. Trying to move them leads him to pull away at the third layer: he can't move. At least, his condition, whatever condition that may be, doesn't allow for movement that could be considered substantial, not enough to sit up or roll over or, you know, do the Worm or anything. But he can lift his head just a bit. Small victories.

When the fourth layer comes away, it reveals the following thought: much like peeling away layers of an onion, you realize, in the end, it's still a fucking onion. And raw onions stink to high heaven on their own -- which is to say, his situation sucks, and he knows it. So he remembers the sound of a distant rumbling and glancing up after a shout of alarm, remembers something barreling into him from the side and his arm shooting out to brace his fall and his head hitting the ground hard anyway (which explains the whole pain thing, really), and he remembers the noise of everything falling down around his ears and Gamora trying to protect him from the worst of it, and--

Wait, shit. Gamora. Fuck-- fuck, where's Gamora--?!

And as if on cue, he hears her voice, and he physically sags with the relief of it and turns his head to her. God, he's almost never been so happy to hear her before in his life.

(The time that takes the proverbial cake is when he heard her gasp for breath as they floated together in the freezing void of space, surrounded by debris and stars.

“Gamora?” At least, that's what he aims for. It sounds more like G'mrr? with the way his voice cracks. He coughs a little, trying to clear his throat. “You okay?”

Character Name: Charles Miller | The Griggstown Cow
Background/History:
>> World Info

The world Charlie comes from is a parallel of our own (Earth, year 2014 represent,) with a few differences. Monsters, cryptids, and creatures from folklore are real, exist, and people are aware of them. Swimming in lakes is a little tedious and getting your kids jackalopes for Easter isn't recommended (too many unwanted fuzzies filling the shelters,) but over all, it hasn't changed too much. Some critters are more abundant than others while others are considered legendary or one-of-a-kind and are still hunted my monster enthusiasts the world over (things like the Jersey Devil, Mothman, Loch Ness Monster, etc.)

There are also superheroes! Real, live superheroes. People having any sort of weird powers are extremely unusual and most of those that do have them, take up the mantle of being a hero. Or a villain. Whichever floats their boat. A lot of them fall into the ridiculous tropes of bank robberies and tying bystanders to train tracks or, on the other side of that coin, stopping such hijinks, but there are a few that go above and beyond in their villainy or heroics. The naming conventions for them all seem to be the same: taking the names of the creatures from their region.

For fourth wall purposes, all games/movies/other media will have their names changed (Batdude and Superguy, Endless Fantasy, etc.)

>> History
Charles was born and raised in the small town of Griggstown, New Jersey. Things were pretty boring in small town NJ, as they usually were. One time there was a barn fire. That was pretty cool.

No, nothing really happened, at least until the time Charlie turned three. Sometimes, his parents would find him in odd places, unsure of how he got from point A to point B when he had clearly been on the other side of the room just moments before. It was almost like he teleported, but they shrugged it off -- this was their first child after all and toddlers did extraordinarily weird things; they must not have been paying close attention.

As he got older, he figured out that he could turn invisible. How? Probably had something to do with the nuclear power plant nearby. Either way, this was the most awesome thing to happen to him. By the time he turned seven, his little noggin slowly pieced together that -- hey -- he had a super power so he was totally a superhero. This conclusion was drawn, of course, while watching Saturday morning cartoons and from that day on he vowed to keep his power a secret. It was for his family's safety, you see, and all the good superheroes did it.

It was also around this same time that his older cousin, Andy, and his family had moved from Leeds Point to Griggstown, his aunt wanting to be closer to her sister. Charlie made an instant connection with Andy despite their age difference (of about twelve years;) his cousin was nerdy and into awesome things, what was there not to like about the goofy guy? It didn't take long for Charlie to confide in him about his power, blurting out that he was a hero over an intense game of Super Smash Siblings.

It took Andy a moment, but when he realized what Charlie was getting at, revealed that he had super awesome powers too. He really was just too lazy to tell people that, hey, he could shapeshift into a giant horse monster, no big deal or anything, and just kind of shrugged it off as a thing. (Family curse, maybe?)

Charlie was ecstatic. Here was family and he was a 'hero' too. For months he begged and pleaded with Andy to form a super duo until his cousin finally caved. They chose the monikers of Jersey Devil and the Griggstown Cow, a homage to their state.

They were terrible heroes.

Not only was there not a lot of crime in the immediate area (and Andy lacked a car to get them anywhere inconspicuously,) but there were other, far more competent superheroes in the greater Jersey area that took care of things just fine. It often led to the sad duo hanging out in the basement of Andy's house in their costumes, eating pizza, and their parents wondering where they had gone wrong in the world.

Personality:
Charlie is perhaps one of the happiest, most positive people that you will ever meet. If he's not smiling as you push him down a flight of stairs, then something is vastly wrong in this kid's world. He doesn't have a single mean bone in his body and will quite happily dole out compliments, even for the dumbest of things. Really, it's like someone took a sweet little puppy and turned it into a twelve-year-old, just because.

Just like a puppy, he's incredibly excitable. If he likes something or someone, he will let you know either by bouncing off the walls or talking your ears off. And the kid can talk, too. There's just so much cool stuff in the world and so little time, he just wants to share it with everyone. It actually kind of makes wading through his Twitter account a little scary sometimes (just don't tell the TOS police he's not thirteen yet.) Though he does enjoy talking about things, listening is an almost entirely different matter. If it doesn't interest him, he gets fidgety, but tries to force himself to listen regardless. Sometimes this will result in him trying to railroad the conversation back to a previous topic or to something else that he likes in the hope of finding common ground elsewhere.

When he gets into a hobby, he really gets into it. Due to a lot of his older cousin's influence, Charlie is into stuff that is typically defined as 'nerdy.' He likes to LARP, play video games, collect and play card games, and is really into cryptozoology and superheroes.

He likes superheroes so much that when he found out that his older cousin had powers too, he begged and pleaded with the poor guy to form a superhero team. Charlie is the glue that holds the duo together, his cousin Andy lacking in the motivation to do anything useful. Though neither boy is very good at it, Charlie approaches the hero business much the same way he approaches everything else in life -- head on and with a lot of enthusiasm. While he takes being a hero very seriously (and he'll save someone one day for real, he swears!) he still views it as one of his games, in a way, and doesn't seem to be afraid of any of the foes they face. He's still very naive and lacks fear because he doesn't know any better.

When he isn't out trying to save the day, he can be found ditching reality via daydreaming. Charlie has a big imagination and won't hesitate to prance around, pretending to be a knight out to save a princess or an explorer tramping through a jungle. Playing pretend is something he is fond of, but can get him into trouble as he will oftentimes blur the lines between fantasy and reality, his imagination running away from him to blow something way out of proportion.

Even though Charlie means well, his personality can be very off putting. He will often be overly familiar with people and consider anyone that is nice to him his friend almost instantly, trying to drag them into his games of make believe if he can. Because of this, he is gullible about a great many things and it's not hard to trick him at all. His trusting nature will generally override any alarm bells because how could someone he considers a friend ever do him harm?

Abilities/Powers:
Invisibility
Exactly what it says on the tin -- Charlie has the ability to turn himself invisible at will and for long periods of time. He can extend this to small items so long as he's invisible too (clothing, books, etc, but nothing big like other people, buildings, and so on.)

Items/Weapons:
-- Superhero costume (a modified cow kigurumi with a cape and Zorro mask)
-- A really cool backpack
-- A Snickers bar

Sample Entry: Charlie on the Test Drive Meme!
Sample Entry Two:
There were a lot of things Charlie missed about home: video games, his action figures, Andy, his parents... But there were a lot of things about Haven that he liked, too.

The city may be grimy, gross, run by evil overlords, and smell worse than his gym socks after the mile run in PE class, but it had a bunch of perks. New places to explore, for one. A lot of everything may be broken, but with a little imagination and some duct tape (if he could find any,) the rubble could be anything.

New friends were another of those reasons, the most important reason, Charlie felt. There were so many different people, from so many different worlds. They all had their own magic or super powers and it was for the first time ever that Charlie had realized that he had felt alone. It didn't make him sad in any way, but it was nice to not have to hide behind a mask all the time and keep a secret identity so that lasers weren't fired at his house or something.

Well. Charlie still dressed up in his superhero costume whenever he could, but the point was, he didn't have to if he didn't want to, which was nice.

But back to friends!

He wanted to do something special for the people of Haven and what do you do for special people? Throw them a party, of course!

Getting materials was hard and he couldn't send out invitations (other than the no writing thing, no one had mailboxes. What kind of houses were these?!) but he had gathered sufficient enough materials to adorn the living room with cloth streamers. Hopefully no one would notice the missing clothing from the donation bin at the church, but hey. It was for a good cause.

The party food included a can of beans and some spaghettios, and Charlie had figured out some party games (anyone up for pin the tail on the spiral?)

Hands on his hips, he surveyed the living room with pride.

Yeah, this was going to be awesome.

Character Name: Astrid Hofferson
Canon: How To Train Your Dragon
Canon Point: Post second movie.
Background/History: Here's a wiki entry, but I am happy to elaborate if you'd like.

Personality:

Astrid grew up in a village where fighting dragons was a matter of survival, and it was your duty to fight for and protect the people around you as best you can. Watching her relatives give everything for this cause only drove it home, and she became dedicated to being the absolute best Viking she could be. She was very critical of herself, accepting nothing but her best, and also critical of others when it was evident that they either weren't trying or were doing things that endangered the village. This caused her to be generally fairly detached from people, preferring to train on her own and hone her skills rather than socialize. However, she was never deliberately cruel -- while the other young Vikings enjoyed mocking each other (and especially Hiccup), Astrid never took part in that. She can be very short with people and isn't particularly patient, but her criticisms all stem from things she believes someone should be able to improve upon. If she doesn't think they have the potential or willingness to improve, then she just tends to ignore them entirely.

She became angry with Hiccup when he suddenly started to excel at 'fighting' dragons, mostly because he seemed to not be even trying or taking it seriously and would avoid or outright lie to her when she tried to find out how he was doing it. As she had been working hard her whole life to be the best, having it suddenly taken from her by someone who didn't even appear to care that he was doing it was too much for her to swallow. When she finally corners Hiccup and he shows her Toothless and takes her flying, she accepts that she had a limited knowledge about dragons and that there could be a better way. After they find out about the dragon nest and the Red Death, she wants to immediately go to the Chief, because finding it has been the village's goal since the island was first settled, and she's nothing if not a proper Viking. However, when Hiccup indicates that he is willing to risk everything to protect Toothless and stop the fighting between people and dragons, she responds to his determination (it is, after all, a trait she shares) and chooses to help him.

Five years have passed since the first film, and they've had quite an impact on her personality. She's still the same girl -- headstrong, competitive, determined to be the best she can be at everything she tries -- but a lot of the pressure is off, and she's relaxed in response to that. The village is no longer getting attacked every month. She has a dragon as a friend, she gets to compete in dragon races instead of trying to kill them. She gets to have fun. If she experiments with something and fails, it doesn't mean someone is going to get hurt or killed. She loves nothing more than working on a difficult maneuver and then finally pulling it off flawlessly. If something gets too easy, she gets bored -- so she also really enjoys going up against people who test her skills and require her to keep improving. She has an understated sense of humor, though it's definitely there, particularly once she gets to know someone. She uses a lot of sarcasm, and when she relaxes around a person she also gets more playful and will start teasing or ribbing them. For instance, when she feels Hiccup is being over-dramatic she likes to do imitations of him to in order to laugh at his reactions. She enjoys successfully flustering someone (particularly Hiccup), and also finds it amusing when people whose skills don't live up to their bragging end up making a fool of themselves.

Astrid has worked very hard to be the best she can be at whatever she tries, and (in most things) that work has paid off. She's one of the best -- if not the best -- fighters in the village. She's an excellent dragon rider and racer, she's smart and a good leader and many of her peers tend to look to her for guidance. All of this she's very aware of, and so is everyone else. She's not boastful, but she's proud of her skills and doesn't see any issue with showing them off. She also takes joy from her long-term relationship with Hiccup, partly because he's the only one on Berk who can really challenge her, either through dragon riding or with ideas and strategies that she would have never considered possible before... but having someone she can confide in, be physically close to and unashamedly playful with helps too. Her loyalty and desire to protect and provide for her village haven't changed at all, but she now believes that Hiccup's ideas are the best way to do that. She serves as his strongest support and also often his voice of reason -- while Hiccup tends to second-guess himself a great deal and overthink things, Astrid is much more confident... not just in her abilities, but also in his. However, she still tends to be much more direct and aggressive in dealing with a situation than he is. If his attempts to resolve things peacefully fail, then she's ready to use whatever force she needs to in order to get things done.

Astrid is inherently suspicious in new situations, because fighting first and asking questions later is how they survived, and that wariness has not gone away -- but after five years trying new ideas and getting thrown into strange situations, she's definitely become more receptive to new places and people. She's seen how Hiccup's strategy of reaching out to people and trying to understand them and make a connection works, and so has now begun to see these things as more of an opportunity than a threat. However, she pretty much just gives it one chance, and if it looks like it's not working out or will be dangerous, then she'll default back to being defensive and focusing on the survival of herself and those she cares about. So basically she'll have her axe at the ready, and if things look like they won't be hostile, she'll relax -- but if not, then she's going to fight or get out of there.

The events of the second film are fresh in her mind right now, and she will be uneasy about being away from Berk when she is so needed. She is not normally very anxious, but she will worry about not being there to support Hiccup after his losses and to help rebuild and protect the village when there is still a hostile army out there.

Abilities/Powers: Astrid is just a normal human, and doesn't have any special powers... though she does lack concern for her own safety (a Viking trait). However, she is extremely athletic. She is a very capable fighter, and seems to be mostly self-taught from observing her elders. She's best with an axe, but is proficient with multiple weapons (including her fists) and prefers to fight at short range.

Her style of dragon riding includes quite a bit of acrobatics, so she is sure-footed and has excellent balance.

Items/Weapons:
- double-bladed axe
- whetstone
- small dagger

Sample Entry: A recent thread.
Sample Entry Two:

Astrid thought she was used to destruction.

She'd seen much of it -- homes burned by dragon fire, ships mangled and crushed, a village half splintered by giant shards of ice. But as she picked her way through the ruined buildings, she could only think that this... this was different. Before there had always been an element of hope among the wreckage, an unspoken knowledge that no matter how much was destroyed, they could still rebuild. There would still be people, there would still be life, there was always a future. There were people here... but not enough to fill the number of buildings that stood stark and empty, even if their broken windows were repaired and beams replaced.

Even if there were more, they wouldn't have the resources to even begin. What sort of a place did not have any trees, or grass, or birds overhead? The thought made her pause in her explorations, sending her eyes upward, to look for -- what? A pair of large wings, maybe two? They hadn't come for her yet, so there was no reason to keep expecting that they would. Still, she hadn't been able to keep herself from looking, even as every glimpse of the empty sky tightened the knot in her chest.

However, it was becoming increasingly apparent that dividing her attention wasn't the wisest plan. When her eyes turned away, something else would move -- to the side of her, behind her, everywhere she had been certain was deserted. Perhaps it was just the strangeness of the new place... but it wasn't worth gambling on that. There may be no one coming to bring her home, but that didn't mean she didn't still have a duty to find a way back herself. They needed her there, and they needed her alive. No room for mistakes. She found a better grip on her axe, straightened her shoulders, and kept moving.

She would not look at the sky again.
