Applications Two

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
The next application opening date is Friday 16th January, 7pm EST.
The next application processing date is Friday 23rd January, 7pm EST.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

To see what we are looking for:
Canon Characters:

pt. 2

[personal profile] stagepresence 2013-11-07 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
Personality:

Outwardly, Kuja seems as a forward, exuberant individual - what you see is what you get - or so he would have you believe. He is spirited and prideful, energetic and egotistical, though that is not to say that he does not have the power to back it up; he talks big because he is big. Kuja is one of the most powerful, if not the most powerful, creature in his home world, even his creator is unable to match him in strength, and Kuja is well aware of it, and unafraid to flaunt it.

Kuja was not born as most were, he was created by a man named Garland, to become, more or less, an angel of death, to destroy all life on the planet Gaia so that it can be replaced by, and assimilated with, the souls and planet of Terra. Unlike what most might think of when you consider the idea of a 'test tube baby', Kuja was never a child; he was born into the body and mind that you are presented with. He never had a childhood, was never taught the fundamentals of life and death and therefore, unsurprisingly, he is incredibly emotionally stunted. It's clear that he thinks of other living creatures as we might think of insects - pointless, useless, stupid and unnecessary. Their lives, their struggles, their souls have no impact on him, and he has no consideration for others, no faculties to build for himself a conscience. He is, in essence, a child, with no developed moral compass or sense of right and wrong to guide him. That said, his respect for others is more or less nonexistent, people are nothing but toys, cattle to be led to the slaughter. It is his directive to incite slaughter, to destroy life, and he does it with zeal and careless glee.

Narcissism plays a large role in his personality as well, for Kuja was groomed to be a killer, the best killer, blessed with incredible powers, elegance, and beauty, without being taught how to temper his pride. As such, he is incredibly conceited and prideful, unabashedly confident in his abilities, his looks, and his smarts. To his mind there is no more perfect being, for he was made to be perfect, wildly intelligent, viciously powerful, there is no other match for him, none who could even come close to him in skill.

But much of this pride - especially as his story progresses - is overblown to cover up a deep seated insecurity. Kuja eventually finds out that Garland has created a second genome, one meant to some day surpass even Kuja in power: Zidane. Unlike Kuja, Zidane was created as a child, meant to grow and learn and develop as a normal living being might, so that he might learn compassion and emotional depth, and therefore be able to harness the power of Trance, a high-powered state induced by a surge of emotion. Since Kuja was engineered to have little emotion, he was, theoretically, incapable of entering into a Trance state, and therefore less capable and powerful than he otherwise might be. But Kuja is far more rebellious than even Garland had expected, and he threw the young child down onto Gaia to prove his own superiority, clearly wounded and afraid, fearful of being replaced, of having no purpose, no reason to exist.

Kuja struggles with this, this sense of self, this need to prove his own worth not only to Garland, but to the entire world, and mostly to himself. He masks this insecurity in a surplus of ego, half to convince others of his superiority, and half to convince himself. In time, he decides that he must overthrow Garland as well, that he must assert his will and value as his own being, unable to accept the idea that he was born a pawn, a failed experiment.

Emotional turmoil aside, Kuja is incredibly efficient, willful, and elegant. He is sociable and well read, sharp on the uptake and quick to exploit others, to find the cracks in your veneer. Aesthetics and cleanliness are important to him, and Kuja surrounds himself with beautiful things as often as he can. Beautiful people, beautiful items - he builds for himself a hidden palace buried in the desert sands, and his lair is breathtakingly exquisite, outfitted with marble statues and towering, graceful pillars, silver candelabras and gold chandeliers and delicate, masterful stained glass. His appearance, too, is lavish and rich, his hair and clothing lush and luxurious and provocative; he strives to be different, to be recognizable and enviable and opulence and beauty are his chosen methods. It pains him to be around ugliness and filth - he refers to the ratlike people of Burmecia as 'vermin', and the obese and unattractive queen Brahne as 'the elephant lady', claiming that they 'offend his senses', though that, of course, does not keep him from using them to attain his goals. Culture, gentility, and grandeur are all very important to him.

As the game progresses, however, Kuja learns something that completely upsets his balance, fractures his sanity and entirely overturns his life's work: that he is mortal. Not only that, he has a very strict time limit that will soon be up. Genomes are, after all, manufactured beings, and Garland created Kuja with a built in expiration date; he was to last only until his usefulness ran out, only until Zidane came into his power and was ready to be utilized. Unable to face the inevitability of his own looming death (he had thought himself immortal, previously), Kuja turns to wild insanity, destroys the entire world of Terra, and makes then to destroy Gaia as well, claiming that it is unfair that the world should go on without him in it, unable to accept his own mortality. He will erase all life, and take charge of his own death, rather than allow Garland control over it. He was meant to be different. He was meant to be special.

By the conclusion of the game, Kuja has, surprisingly, begun, at least a little bit, to see the error of his ways. Be it by his own growth as a character (and the revelation of mortality, and what it truly means to live, and to die), or due perhaps to the amount of souls he needed to absorb to learn to enter into a Trance state, or perhaps both - Kuja begins to develop a conscience, finally beginning to enter the emotional stages of growth that he was denied at birth. He is sorry, on some level, for the things that occurred at his hand, and with the last of his strength he teleports Zidane and his party out of a collapsing dimension and back to Gaia, saving their lives.

And so in the end, Kuja is, truthfully, a flawed creature, pitiable and despicable alike, with the mind of an adult but the heart of a child. He is smug and egotistic, vainglorious and selfish. But he is also afraid, and insecure, self-serving, stubborn, and prideful. He is all of these things and more, a whirlwind of a personality, to be sure, all pomp and power and exuberant, jovial extroversion with a healthy dash of foppish, courtly grace and a childish streak a mile wide. He has a propensity for overblown theatrics, and fancies all the world a stage, and he in the starring role. But he is growing, at least, and hopefully, in the end, for the better.

pt. 3

Abilities/Powers:

Kuja is incredibly powerful, and by that I mean like god-tier power, easily the most powerful person in the game, especially after achieving Trance. He knows the strongest spells in the game, including Ultima. To put things into perspective, he is literally able to destroy an entire world using Ultima, and he is one of the only (if not the only) Final Fantasy villain who is technically undefeated, as far as the storyline is concerned. Both times the party faces him, once he's injured to a certain extent, he casts Ultima and basically decimates everyone. He's more or less untouchable.

Speaking of, he's also incredibly difficult to kill, and largely resistant to injury. Even Bahamut, one of the strongest eidolons in the game, is only able to scratch him in a direct attack. He has incredible stamina and endurance, so it's really really tough (even 4 on 1!) to take this guy down.

More specifically, Kuja is a practiced mage, and uses spells to fight rather than a physical weapon. He's able to cast several spells, including Thundaga, Demi, Flare, Flare Star, Curaga, Meteor, Reflect, Holy, and Ultima, though given his vast range and ability it can probably be assumed that Kuja can cast nearly every spell in the game. He's also capable of hovering, and flight, and is able to summon and control monsters.

Items/Weapons: Kuja uses no weapons or items, and fights only with magic, so he will have with him only the clothing on his back, and a small twig from the Iifa tree.

Sample Entry Two:

To regret..

It is a feeling wholly new to him, fresh and strange and painful, but so different that it takes him a moment to even understand it, to recognize it and define it. Regret.. He has never felt this thing before, and the weight of it feels heavy on his chest. The human conscience is a crushing thing indeed, and no one ever told him that it was so painful, having a heart, caring about others, however obtusely. If he had known, perhaps he might have tried harder not to care, not to let these feelings in, but.. it's a moot point, now. Surely he would have learned, in time. Surely it would have come to him eventually. But it doesn't really matter now, does it? He's dying, and with him will pass all of his regret, all of his misgivings, all of the useless apologies that taste like ash on his tongue.

Kuja lifts his right hand, weakly, holding it against what little of the sky he can see between the Iifa's smothering roots and boughs, one last look at a blue, blue sky before the end. A smile cracks his mouth, wry and sharp as the edge of a knife; how fitting, he thinks, to die alone like a dog, trapped in the roots of the tree of souls. How ignoble. How low. Is this what he deserves? Surely it must be. What a wretched existence indeed, he never would have thought that it would come to this, that he would die this way (he never thought he would die at all), broken and bleeding and utterly, entirely alone, isolated. And regretful. How sad. How pathetic. But at least there are none here to see his shame, to berate him for what he has done, what he had been created to do.

His breath leaves him in a sigh, and Kuja's battered arm drops to his side again. Everything feels so heavy, as if the weight of the very air is pressing down on him, forcing the breath from his lungs. All that is left now is to wait. To wait, and let it pass. With his eyes closed, he does not even hear the approaching footsteps.

Flynn Scifo | Tales of Vesperia | No reserve 2/3

[personal profile] obligates 2013-11-07 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:
Flynn can be described as nothing more than extraordinary. He is a fine knight, exceeding his expectations in almost everything, as well as being an upright and respectable person. He is kind to those who deserve it, yet punishing those whom are not. However, this does not mean that he is not a polite person. Being the man Flynn is, he is always respectful to those around him- no matter their rank or age. Flynn may come off as heartened, but he is anywhere but that. He holds compassion for his friends and even risks the extra mile to ensure their safety. Even when he is not the person to do it directly (such as using his men to avoid something that Brave Vesperia would have trouble with, or even being behind the scenes in saving those whom they couldn't) the male still finds ways to assists others while worrying about them all the same. His outside demeanor is cold, sure, but crippling away the knight front, there lies more of Flynn then what originally meets the eye.

Over the years little has changed about this man's stature and outward appearances. When Flynn was younger, he quickly earned the title of "Goody Goody". For being in the top of his class and the law obeying citizen that he was, he quickly earned this title along with a reputation as a fine knight. Some would state that it was because of his father that Flynn received all this special treatment, and not by his works alone. His father had died in the line of battle doing something rash yet all the while saving people from harm. This, as noble as it was, angered Flynn for much of his young life because he "disobeyed his commanding officers, and died because of it." This action alone makes it hard for Flynn to go against the rules and instead follow what was placed in front of him. He gets angered when laws are broken, and does his best to prevent breaking said laws. This, along with other things, has developed the man into have a very stiff attitude.

Even now Flynn is still a man of the law. He believes that laws were put in place for a reason, and those laws should be followed for the right of every person. Time and time again Flynn states that, "we need just laws laid down by the government to ensure that people can live lives of stability and peace." He cares for the people. And not only does he want to protect them, but by keeping those who rule over them with a clear and sound mind. This, he states, was the reason he had joined the Knights in the first place- to allow himself a way to change things instead of being helpless to watch an empire rule over their people unjustly. While growing up in the Lower Quarter, Flynn and Yuri were forced to watch as the rich only got richer, and the poor remained poor. They received harsh outcomes, and were force to watch a world ruled by the unjust. That is why the two of them swore they would change their way of living. Not just for themselves, but for everyone going through difficulties. Through these morals and strict judgement for himself, it allowed him to move through the ranks quickly so he could obtain what he wanted- a set of laws that were not just for one rank of people, but for all.

It was with these morals that brings forth a strong sense of justice in this male. Even when confronted with his best friend when a bounty was put on his head, Flynn had no qualms about taking him in to face a court of law. So even though he had grown up with his man, he couldn't allow one person to continuously break the laws without any judgement. Time and time when confronting Yuri, his childhood friend, he tells the man to pay for his misdeeds and hand himself over to the knights. Even still turning his sword on his friend on multiple occasions when angered or fearing that Yuri had overstepped his boundaries as a normal citizen. He believes that through the equality of the law that one should be judged, and it is not left to one person's whim on who should live or die. When confronted with this when Yuri had killed two men high within the law so much so that punishment for the crimes was reduced, Flynn struggled with the morality of it all and still held disapproval for Yuri. While he himself did not like the men and found the laws protecting them to be unfair, he insisted that only by moving up in ranks and changing those laws could one rightfully judge another.

Speaking of Yuri, their relationship is... complicated, to say the least. While Flynn may act kind and civil to others, it goes without a doubt that whenever they begin to talk, a fight may ensure. This is mainly due to how opposite their personalities are, and someway or another they revert back to childish antics with hurtful words and cursing. Because Flynn at first did not believe the path that Yuri had chosen to be correct, he often clashed with the boy about his inner morals to which Flynn held in such a high regard. Even though he does not agree with what Yuri does and often questions his motives, he still takes the time to talk them him and allow his friend to explain his situations. Yet through all of this they still managed to remain friends, helping one another out of their own quest in mysterious ways.

Flynn is stubborn. End of story. We can all go home now. He, like his best friend Yuri, are unable to take anything sitting. Once he puts his mind to it there is little one can do to stop him. If there are no restrictions keeping him at bay from the Knights, Flynn is always right in the middle of a dire situation when needed. Even in the event where a fake letter had been sent to the Guilds and the Knights, Flynn is first to dive head first in between an upcoming war to set things straight. He will press a matter continuously, and as Yuri so boldly states, "Flynn's no delicate little flower. He can take some heat. Don't forget. Before he was a Knight, he had to make it on the streets of the Lower Quarter." This not only proves his willingness to complete something once it has started, but the inability to let something go once the situation has been placed in front of him- no matter the size.

Yet his stubbornness is not the only thing that gets this boy in trouble- it would be his anger. He is quick to such emotion, and will often last out against those whom have gone against him. Though he knows his place as being a Knight, it is these times with Yuri that his tempter is usually lost and all sense of a higher stander is forgotten. He is also quick to call someone out, and isn't afraid to tell it exactly how it is. Often times this anger will lead to rash decisions, but with the help of others it can easily be calmed down.

However, the blond has a more gentler side aside from ordering his troops around and trying to aid in the saving of the world. When dealing with others (others that are not Yuri), the blond is a very kind person and shows this kindness to all whom he can. He is polite to them, of course, extends a hand for help in whichever way he can. Flynn constantly takes the time to watch over Yuri and his friends to make sure they are alright, often asking Yuri to take care of Princess Estellise as she travels with them. He has a big heart, and while that not always be expressed due to his authoritative demeanor, still allows himself to be as polite to everyone as possible. Not only because of his rank, but because of the realization from where he started out- that everyone was person. He sees everything for the big picture, and tries to lead himself in a way that could be an example for others.

Flynn is also a leader. Not only because of the position he was put in when commanding the 'Flynn Brigade', but also his natural sense of leadership that allows him to preform his job beautifully. He is able to think things through with a sound mind, and hold himself to a standard above everyone else. When one of his knights causes trouble or something underneath happens, he will be the first to take responsibility for his men and their actions. This is turn causes high respect for the male and a pride to follow underneath him. So while he does not treat them with any sort of superiority, he instead leads them in an upright manner as their friend.

Overall, Flynn is an upright and respectable man. Though he has visible flaws and is not the perfect person, he strives to become the best he can be, and uses his standing to show the world that not only can you improve oneself, but change something by hard work and determination.

Abilities/Powers:
Full list of Flynn's Artes can be found here!

Flynn has the inner ability from his weapon known as artes. These are skills that, once combined with a weapon, can preform powerful attacks based on the user's whim. A variety of them follow, and each different from one person to the next.
Flynn is a skilled fighter, trained in both sword and minor healing abilities. He is quick on his feet; being able to dodge attacks quickly and forcing his attacks to be just as rapid as his footing. He is a close combat fighter, and uses his sword as an extension of his body to bring down his foes.
Yet aside from his physical strength, Flynn has a very sharp mind and it quick to come out with solutions needed in battle. For being a leading commandant for the Knights, Flynn must know how to think of his feet in the most pressing of circumstances- regardless of what the situation might be. This allows the boy to make very fast decisions, and overall succeeding under stress.
However, because Flynn is very stubborn and gets angered easily, this clouds most of his judgement from time to time. He has trouble finding the true meaning of something that is done when shaded by title of the law, and often finds himself doing something he wouldn't normally do because of it.
Also... he had very poor cooking skills. Enough said.

Items/Weapons:
Flynn is usually seen carrying a sword to his side, along with a shield. He will also be bringing along a few apple gels (items which increase his heath) and orange gels (those that increase SP or Artes).

Sample Entry Two:
To say that Flynn was becoming use to his new surroundings was anything but true. He was always on the edge lately; eyes wildly looking about for danger and tensions high with the looming atmosphere surrounding him. This place, Haven, was far from what he was normally use to. Even through his duties, Flynn was able to travel as far and wide as the sea, and yet... yet this place still remained one location he had failed to see. Though as days progressed, such a sight had turned sour. He was becoming to loath his place, even more so then when he first arrived. However, though his detest of his current situation, one thing pushed his motivation to continue on- a simple little pink-haired princess.

It was late, and Flynn had well passed bid Estellise a good night's rest. He however was restless, and found himself standing outside the place he knew she had placed her head down for the night. If there was one thing he could still do despite being stripped of his namesake and fellow Knights, that was to continue to protect the princess. He had given the job to Yuri in the past; Estellise was a free spirit, and Flynn had trusted no on else but his friend to take care of her while Flynn had continued his own duties for the Empire. However, Yuri no longer had to be the only one looking after her. He still had his duty to the person he most highly respected, and counted on Yuri to help him see that this task was to be completed in full until the time when they would all be sent home.

So until then, now beginning to straighten out his shoulders into attention, he would continue to rely on his friend, as well as ensure the safety of the princess for yet another night.

"Sleep well, Lady Estellise. And to you as well, Yuri." He chuckles to himself, a sigh then escaping his lips. "Hopefully tomorrow will be better day..."

001. dc wikia.

003. wikipedia.
Personality:
Look at this child, he's positively darling! With that ever-present scowl on his face, that unyielding glare, that blood-stained sword in his arms so eager to break flesh; how could you not adore him? Quite easily, actually. Most people can't stand him. This is Damian Wayne, and there's nothing delightful about him at all. At first glance, he looks like any other ten-year old boy. Short but athletic build, round cheeks, blue eyes, a colourful Robin costume if you catch him at night -- why, he looks like a child out trick-or-treating on Halloween! Then, he opens his mouth. And words come out. Mean words. Words questioning authority, words belittling competence and intelligence, words promising a swift and painful execution at his small, tiny hands. Never taught to hold his tongue, Damian simply says whatever he wants to say. If he finds someone a nuisance, he will tell them that. If he finds someone incompetent, he will tell them that. If he feels a desire to stab someone in the stomach, he will ... well, you get it. His sentences are curt and straight to the point, and they can sound almost eloquent -- or far more eloquent than most would expect coming from such a small child -- until he dishes out that occasional swear word, or starts mocking Batgirl for her chest size.

Though he does have the capability to think and plan, Damian is rash. Kicks and punches are something he gives out eagerly -- generously to the deserving, even. When he spots someone he identifies as an adversary, his immediate reaction is usually to tackle them. Questions can be asked later. When he finds someone's partnership or leadership ineffective, he will act on his own; this 'acting' usually comprising of abandoning his teammate in a huff, hunting down that week's villain and beating them until he gets what he wants. This, unsurprisingly, gets him into a lot of trouble -- the life-threatening kind, hardly anything like a slap on the wrist. Fortunately, he usually has someone to back him out; though they may not get a 'Thank You' for it. On top of being rash, Damian also has quite the temper. This is something neither the rogues nor his own caped 'family' are excused from. Probably a result of being raised spoiled -- anything he wanted from a hydrofoil to a private island having been presented to him on a silver platter back when he still lived with Talia -- Damian will throw a tantrum if he cannot get what he wants. One of the first things he did after meeting his father for the first time was complain about not having his own laptop, and hurl the plate of food that was provided for him at the closest wall. He has mellowed out considerably after taking on the role of Robin, but he may still lunge at someone in bluster from time to time.

Damian can be cocky. He has high confidence in his abilities, particularly his combat skills. Having been trained from Day One by masters in the League of Assassins, there isn't a lot about fighting that Damian doesn't know about. As such, he has a tendency to dish out death threats without first knowing how good his opponent is. He'll talk big, even if there's no guarantee he can deliver; And when it becomes true that he cannot deliver, you'll have to cut off his tongue before he'll admit to being weak. This was very evident in one of his frequent tussles with Tim Drake-Wayne. When Damian's constant mocking finally hit a nerve and earned him a punch from Tim, Damian's immediate reaction was not to apologise or cower, but to make the excuse that he let Tim have that punch so he'll feel good about himself. Furthermore, his arrogant nature makes it very difficult for him to accept help from others. He believes he can do everything on his own, and he will try, until it becomes evident that such is not the case. Even after being held dangling by the neck ten or twenty storeys above the busy traffic below, even after being thrown over the edge while still recovering from paralysis, he maintained ---his calm demeanor at that time implying that he honestly believed it -- that he could save himself somehow, and gave Dick no 'Thank You' for swooping down and grabbing him before he joined the roadkill below.

Competence is very important to Damian. His mother was a perfectionist, and it is without a doubt that the League of Assassins that raised him were highly-trained and perhaps unrivaled of their field. This left Damian with an appreciation for the skilled, and a disdain for the unskilled. His differing treatment toward those he deems competent and incompetent is very painfully apparent. To the ones he deem competent, there is less mocking. He speaks with respect, and may even perform gestures most would consider 'nice'. An immediate example would include Colin Wilkes. Colin is a fellow ten-year old who has teamed up with Damian with satisfying results. In thinly-veiled gratitude, and perhaps to enlist Colin as a potential ally, he gave him a motorcycle to make his crime-fighting operations smoother. Damian has yet to be seen giving anyone anything otherwise. On the other hand, to the ones he finds incompetent, Damian is a pest. He will pick at their flaws -- whether relevant ones like a sloppy fight style or inability to keep up, or irrelevant ones like the impracticality of their hairstyle and the size of their chest -- and constantly express his disdain until the very mention of his name can leave throbbing veins in his victim's forehead. He can hate them, or at least tell them that he does, based on this perception of incompetence alone. It doesn't matter if he actually knows them well enough to have a real reason to or not. Stephanie Brown -- Batgirl -- is an unfortunate victim of a lot of this treatment. Tim Drake-Wayne is another.

Though his criticism of Steph's ability is based on objective observation alone, his many criticisms directed at Tim have more emotional roots. Tim is -- or was -- Robin when Damian first met him. Bruce's Robin. His Father's Robin. Not only was Tim Robin, but he was also the adopted son of Bruce. All of that alone was enough to make Damian classify him as a rival, and almost take his life at the second meeting. He found Tim unworthy, and he barely even knew him. It is unclear if Damian still harbours this mindset, but back then he believed strongly in his birthright. As he is Bruce's only biological son, he saw himself deserving of the fortune and also the Robin title -- that place at his father's right hand. Tim was but an obstacle, and in the League of Assassins: You kill anyone who gets in your way. Thankfully, the two of them can function in the same cave now (for the most part), but Damian continues to mock him every chance he gets.

His upbringing with League of Assassins has shaped him in many ways, few of which pleasant. Damian's moral compass can only be described as skewed. He has killed, and will kill again if not for the promise he made his father. Damian's fighting style can only be described as offensive. If the opponent is deserving, he punches to wound and slices to draw blood; he does not wait for the other to attack and go on defensive. In fact, he may question why the people around him fight defensively at all. There are a lot of things that make no sense to him, but fighting does. Killing does. People trying to kill him does. Those were words that came out of his own mouth, and they imply many brushes against death supplied by trainers who spare no chops or slashes. Even as Robin, he has shown a willingness to kill dangerous criminals on several occasions. He takes that promise at face value, you see. Non-lethal force is simply a job requirement to him. He does not have the compassion to register its importance. That is why Dick chose Damian as his sidekick over Tim. Damian needed someone to remind him of his limits.

Behind the sarcasm, blunt nature and general unpleasantness, Damian does have a desire to do what's right. If the ruthless way he deals with criminals -- how ruthless directly proportional to the severity of their crimes -- indicates anything, it's this. He's not quite at the level of adhering completely to the superhero moral code, but he may get there someday. Killers who choose children as their victims get a particularly strong reaction out of him, perhaps because he identifies with others his own age. At the sight of the corpses of Victor Zsasz's young victims, Damian was physically repulsed. He gagged, then seethed -- probably already planning to give Zsasz a taste of his own medicine. He nearly did kill him, too, but stopped his sword at the last minute -- just an inch or two short of severing the spine. Damian takes his job seriously, and will try his darndest to save those who are helpless. If he cannot accomplish that, he takes the responsibility onto himself. Sasha was a girl he failed to save from Professor Pyg. The trauma caused her to go insane and join forces with Jason Todd, this time taking on the alias 'Scarlet'. After encountering Scarlet, Damian recognised her immediately and felt obligated to her. Despite the fact that she tasered him, slashed him and knocked him out, he still fulfilled this obligation by saving her from Flamingo.

Damian, in Dick's words, 'bleeds a need for acceptance', particularly from his parents. He wants them to love him the way he loves them, though he may never admit it. When his own mother placed an implant into his spine, using it to control him and force him to kill Dick, Damian did not despise her for it. He was disappointed, maybe even hurt. Most people who attempt the same thing would likely get a jaw broken, but all Damian did was ask to talk. After Talia rejected his decision to continue operating as Robin and subsequently ousted him from her family, Damian was visibly dejected, but duly accepting. His relationship with his father is also something far from perfect, and this is a source of insecurity for him. Bringing it up can hit a nerve and most likely silence any mocking or harsh words. He harbors a strong idolization for his father, constantly gravitating to him and choosing him over his mother. He wants nothing more than to prove himself to Bruce, and that is why he had his eye on the mantle of Robin from the start. Because it is the 'Batman' and not the 'Robin' that motivates him to take on the role, Damian once threw his crest on the floor in a huff when Dick's performance failed to impress him. He accused Dick of making a mockery of his father's image. (Thankfully, Damian has since had a complete change of heart.)

In general, Damian is a monster who's growing to fit the shoes of a boy. At his first appearance, he had no compassion or sympathy -- having never been showed such himself. All he had was a strangled craving for affection, and one he did not know the right way to go about expressing. After meeting his Father, Damian was introduced to a brighter world -- a more honorable way to live his life -- and people who actually treated him like a person. The more people that subsequently entered his life, the more 'human' he started to become. Now, Damian has begun to show positive traits, namely: responsibility, empathy and attachment. He's begun to elevate people beyond the impersonal 'partner', 'rival' or 'nuisance', and he's started to accept others as a 'friend'. This alone is a big development for him, having been raised in a world where worth is only measured in competence. He may not have the overbearing love for humanity that some others do, he may not be gentle; but under Dick's guidance, he is learning.

. . . These things just take time.

Abilities/Powers:

Damian is genetically perfect, but how this affects his capabilities has never been fleshed out in canon. Therefore, I'm assuming he has the strength, speed and agility of a trained, athletic ten-year old boy. Because of his training, he is good at many things. They include:

♜COMBAT

He was trained by assassins, so I assume he knows quite a lot about fighting. How good he is, and how many different kind of martial arts he knows is not specifically mentioned in canon (to my knowledge). However, he can hold out against several ninjas at the same time pretty comfortably. Furthermore, despite being ten, the people around him are rarely worried about his safety. Rather, they tend to worry about the safety of the ones opposing him. This must mean he's pretty good, if anything. They wouldn't let a ten-year old go up against the dangerous and batshit insane in the first place, otherwise.

♜WEAPONRY

His main weapon is the katana, and he seems to be pretty good at it! Damian has also been seen using grappling hooks, boomerangs (both of those, bat-requirements), brass knuckles, longbows, bazookas, a flamethrower and several other weapons. He claims to be able to shoot 'most anything from an M-16 to an AK-47'. He has also been taking target practice from very early into his childhood.

♜VOCAL-MIMICRY

Perhaps a natural-born skill, or another thing drilled into him, Damian has a knack for imitating voices. He can pick up on a person's voice and accent after only exchanging a few sentences with them. Because he is skilled in imitating voices, he is also skilled in detecting fake accents.

♜MISCELLENIOUS OTHER THINGS

●ESCAPING. He can untie himself out of most situations.
●HACKING. He can hack into computer systems, though this isn't his strongest skill. He managed to hack Tim's password, but it took him six meticulous hours to do it.
●MECHANICS. He managed to finish up the new Batmobile his father was building.
●CORPORATE SHENANIGANS. He once led a Board meeting at Wayne Enterprises, his father's company. As Board Director, Damian solved the mystery of financial irregularities within the company by investigating into charity donations -- something nobody else was MEAN enough to do.
●PILOTING. Damian claims to have made his first H.A.L.O dive at a young age. Bruce also let him pilot his rocket.
●EXTREME WHEELCHAIR TOSSING. He tosses wheelchairs. While recovering from a spinal injury and clearly needing one. What is this child I don't even --

Items/Weapons: A change of clothes, a katana and a grappling hook.
Sample Entry: An old thread from sirenspull.
Sample Entry Two:
Ever since the donning of the 'R' crest, Damian rarely worked alone. Dick was always by his side; sometimes delivering a humourless quip, sometimes imparting a little wisdom, and sometimes -- as much as Damian would hate to admit -- pulling the morbidly eager boy out of that occasional sticky situation. The Damian of months prior would find the whole thing absurd. Of all the things he had been trained in -- the target practice and escape artistry and long line of martial arts -- that Damian had never been trained to work as a team. The technicalities, he was well-versed; group tactics were, after all, a necessary brand of strategy for a heir that would one day mobilize an underground empire. The more interpersonal aspects of teamwork, however, were something foreign. Things like acceptance, mutual respect, trust -- anything rooted deeper than the mere expectation of competence was never taught to him. (What good would teaching an 'It' the value of 'We' even be?) So, yes, he had in fact spent his first few days as 'Robin' rejecting the very idea of their partnership. He was unwilling to obey orders or even consider them. And he did throw his crest on the floor in a very theatrical display. But that's all changed.

In fact, over time, he had grown to accept this partnership. It was more than that; it was tolerable, satisfactory -- he really, really liked it. The heart that was once cold and without a shred of mercy found its walls softening, his mind learning. He started to consider. He started to take responsibility. He started to emphatize. The ways of the League of Shadows that once shaped his entire nature begun to corrode, and from the cracks a boy was emerging. Furthermore, he may have found his first 'friend' in the older man. This was the most foreign concept of all; having that personal connection where the respect is mutual, and there was never any need to impress or prove himself. He was comfortable, and could thus humble himself to the level of a student -- modestly learning under the wing of his most honored 'friend'. The most important thing, however, was that he was happy.

Damian stirred, thrust into the world of wakefulness by the buzzing of one very annoying alarm clock. The last thing he remembers is clear in his mind, "Father. Now that you're back, what happens to Batman and Robin?" He never got an answer, and the uncertainty sure does sting.

Personality

"I sometimes forget the two of you are only children."

Midii is a child of War who was forced to grow up before her time. She possesses an aura of both (deceptive) innocence and maturity about her, to the point where soldiers who regularly associate with her often forget how young she really is. Something which worked to her great benefit, as she had the face of an angel whom no one would ever suspect of wrongdoing, even in the middle of a warzone. She is not above manipulation to get what she needs (as opposed to what she necessarily wants), and is selfish by necessity because it was the only way she knew how to survive.

Much of this comes from the life she'd led: no mention is ever made of a mother, and her father was too sick to properly care for her or her three younger brothers. This left Midii weighed with the responsibility of becoming her family's breadwinner...by agreeing to work for the Alliance as a spy. A job that would not only put her own life at risk, but guarantee nothing but pain, death, and betrayal to any and all she would come to associate with. She had no choice. It wasn't just her life on the line. She had her family to think of. She had responsibilities.

Of course, how would she have known she would meet a boy so very much like her? Far more than either of them would ever be willing to admit. Nanashii was around her age. A self-proclaimed soldier since he was born (though later evidence suggests he was actually adopted by the militia when he was roughly 4 or 5 years old), he had no name and no family ties to weigh him down. In Midii's eyes, he was free. The one thing she wasn't. Everything she wanted to be.

She envied him.

The worst part of it all is that Midii's reaction to standing in the middle of a field of corpses--those whose deaths she had been directly responsible for--was not to stare in horror, cry for the loss of life, or even so much as bat an eyelash. She knew what she had done. She knew she probably did not deserve to live for her crimes. And yet, Death was such a part of her life that she had actually grown used to it.

She couldn't afford not to be.

She is also a severe hypocrite. Often saying one thing, while ultimately thinking another altogether. For the majority of her time spent with the rebel soldiers, Midii attempted to goad emotional reactions out of Nanashii, whose company she came to share quite often. She asked him questions about whether or not he felt sad about killing his friends. About why he reacted the way he had to the images of circus tents off in the distance. Her curiosity about him was nearly insatiable. Unsurprising, given that--considering her line of work--knowledge was the most valuable tool she could possibly possess. Yet, when it was her turn to face confrontation in a moment of heightened emotions...she proved to be as outwardly cold and reserved as he. Almost.

Every accusation of betrayal and second-hand murder was answered with calm, evasive responses. She did not lie. She had never actually lied up until that point, except by omission. Held at gunpoint, she calmly removed the game transmitter from around her neck before admitting that, yes, the cross she had given him was also a transmitter. She did it for her family, so they would not starve. But most tellingly was the internal battle in which Midii admitted to herself that she had come to love the boy standing before her...and yet, the words that made it out were a frustrated declaration of hate for 'people like [him]'

It wasn't so much a lie as a twisted version of what she truly felt. Words she was either unwilling to say, or incapable of. The only time she cried--and the ultimate outburst of emotion--resulted not so much from Guilt, but in frustration that he simply could not understand why.

For all her faults, however, there is one noticeable redeeming quality about her: loyalty. Midii did what she had to do for her family, because they were all she had. But she also risked her life unnecessarily further by giving Nanashii that cross. It was meant to be her safety blanket, alerting the Alliance to her presence during the ambush so she would not be caught in the crossfire. But she gave it to Nanashii, and was subsequently nearly killed by the bombs exploding all around her. It was only by a combination of pure luck and Nanashii's mutual unwillingness to see her killed as well that she survived the attack.

Likewise, in the end, when Nanashii had every reason in the world to shoot her, the traitor, dead...a position she could only have found herself in because she had made sure he would live...he, once again, saved her life by sparing her.

Luckily.

Abilities/Powers:
Midii is baseline human, and comes with no extraordinary abilities to speak of. She was not trained in battle (though, judging by her reactions to war, she is accustomed to it). She is not a fighter. She is a survivor, though this is just as much a result of luck as it is of skill. She also has no noteworthy high IQ, though she is considerably smarter and more mature than your average child.

The only talents that can be inferred from her brief appearance include knowledge of technology (as she had to use a hand-held device to communicate with the Alliance in an age where technology was widespread); excellent body language/facial feature reading capabilities (to be able to translate Nanashii's thousand and one variations of lineface into something emotional); and a possible bilingual background (English Japanese whatever the "universal" language spoken amongst all GW characters is you know what? Let's just go with Japanese + her native French, indicated by her name-- "Midii" -- which is French for "midday/noon")

To a degree, it can also be assumed she has been trained just enough by the Alliance to confidently perform the abilities necessary to do the job she was sent out to do (although this information is not explicitly given in canon), as her actions and reactions to being put in the positions she was indicate this was not her first time surrounded by Death. She is something of an actress, able to put on a deceptively "innocent" front in order to infiltrate those she is meant to later spy on. Though the majority of her acting abilities consists of closing herself off from the rest of the world.

Items/Weapons: Beyond her clothing (sneakers, jeans, a dark green tank top, matching sweater, and slightly oversized army jacket), the only item Midii will arrive with is the small, golden cross (broken just below the intersection) she wears around her neck.

Sample Entry #1:  Network Post from [community profile] tushanshu

Sample Entry Two

It said something about the world she came from that Midii did not initially notice she had been taken.

The streets were vacant.  Dirty.  Broken.  Not a soul was in sight, though she could hear the faint sounds of life coming from a distance.  She made no efforts to establish contact.  Besides the fact that the eleven-year-old had no idea who or what could be lurking around the corner...who would want to help someone like her?  She was a spy.  A traitor.  There were men laying dead on the battlefield because of her.  Regardless of her intentions...regardless if she hadn't been the one to ultimately pull the trigger...none of that would never fully wash the blood off her hands.

The writing on the Billboard was what first clued her in that something wasn't right.  That image.  That writing.  Haven.

A hand instinctively went to the broken cross around her neck.  Haven was only one letter away from heaven, which was the last place she deserved to be.  It almost felt like some sick, cruel joke.  Maybe she'd died after all?  The last thing Midii remembered, she'd been wandering.  Lost.  Alone.  Abandoned.  No food or supplies beyond the meager rations she'd managed to salvage from corpses.  How long had it been since she was left there to die?  Days?  Weeks?

Voices again.  This time, they were getting closer.

Knowing this could be her only chance for survival...assuming she even deserved to survive...she took a deep breath and prepared herself.  Putting on that same innocent aura she had the day she'd first approached Nanashii all those months ago.

"Excuse me.  Could you help me?  I think I'm lost."

Only this time, it wasn't an act.

Personality:
Upon first meeting Ventus, you'd be hard pressed not to make some sort of comparison with Sora. After all, they're both friendly, determined individuals who would go the extra mile in order to keep their friends safe. Not only do they possess similar body language, adopting the same pose whenever they feel particularly relaxed, but they even say their "friends are [their] power" word for word. Considering that Ven's heart rests within Sora after the events of Birth by Sleep, this is most definitely not a coincidence. But, that's just about as far as the similarities go. Regardless of how many comparisons one would like to draw between them, they're just that. They may be similar, but they're not the same.

As mentioned before, Ven is a pretty friendly kid. He always approaches others with a cheery disposition and tries his best to be polite, regardless of how others may treat him. At one point of his story, he even makes it his mission to go out and meet new people and make as many new friends as possible. It doesn't even matter how long he's known someone or how well he actually knows them. As long as they don't go around kicking puppies and stealing lollipops, you can bet he's going to consider them a friend. Even if it might be a little naive of him, he just doesn't have it in him to be unnecessarily mean. However, all things have their limits, and so does Ven's overall cheerfulness once he's been pushed too hard.

Like every other human being, he does have the potential to become withdrawn and sullen. For someone who always introduces himself by nickname, it's important to note that one of the only times he didn't do this was when he was upset. In fact, he's very much capable of getting downright snappy with others. They may not have necessarily been the cause of his sour mood, but just happened to be there at the wrong place and at the wrong time. Thankfully, because of his general peppiness, it really doesn't take much to make him lighten up. One little spar or one good joke, and he'll be right back to his usual, cheerful self.

Of course, even though he does cherish all his friends on a fairly equal level, it goes without saying that Terra and Aqua are by far the closest and most important friend he has. Not only have they been there for him for what is (as far as they're concerned) all of his life, but he looks up to them like a younger brother would his older siblings. Because they've always been by his side whenever he needed them, he would like the opportunity to return the favor sometime. To say he idolizes them would be an understatement, and this is a bit of a fault in itself. Because he looks up to them so much, he has a hard time accepting either of them can do anything wrong. In Terra's case, this goes to ridiculous extremes. Even when the evidence kept piling up against him, Ven kept insisting that everyone was wrong. There was no way Terra was becoming someone other than the amazing older brother figure he had come to know and love--and he was fiercely determined to prove anyone who said otherwise wrong.

Due to being significantly younger than his friends, Ven is very much like a child who has heard the wait until you're older routine one too many times. As such, he's very obviously frustrated whenever he's told to return to the Land of Departure by either of his friends. Because he's been sheltered for all he can remember of his life, he feels the need to go out and find the answers he seeks all by himself. He can't trust word of mouth when he doesn't even have the slightest idea of what's out there, and this is why leaving the Land of Departure is such as big step for him. Not only is he probably disobeying his Master's orders for the first time, but he's also finally going out and discovering the world outside his home. He's naive when his journey starts, of course, but he matures fast. Learning what's out there and what has been kept away from him gives him a whole new perspective on life.

As all of this this implies, Ven has the potential to be so much more than the naive, 15-year-old amnesiac he currently is. Not only does he eventually become someone who is willing to throw it all away for his friends, but he also becomes someone who is willing to throw it all away to save everyone. He knows the role he's been pushed into due to Xehanort's ambitions, and understands that (despite it not being his fault at all) he has to take responsibility for it. He vastly prefers having his friends lose him through good, old fashioned death than having them lose everything through him becoming the χ-blade's wielder. It's a difficult thing for a boy as young as him to take on, but he comes to terms with it for the sake of the greater good.

However, due to his canon point, Ven has yet to reach that potential. For now, he is still that young, amnesiac boy whose only memories are of his life at the Land of Departure. He loves his friends, enjoys astronomy and dreams of becoming a Keyblade Master. As far as he knows, what he sees is what he gets--but the need to change that is already in there. For now, his main priority is catching up to Terra and making sure everything is going to be okay. Simple, but also the start of something so much more bigger than he can ever imagine.

Abilities/Powers:
Just like his friends, Ven has the ability to use the Keyblade. This weapon, which can only be used by a select few, allows him to do a variety of things. It can range from unlocking doors and chests to channeling powerful magic through it. As the name implies, the Keyblade also functions like a sword and is capable of hacking and smacking pretty much anything with a surprising amount of resilience.

Unlike most of the other Keyblade wielders featured in the series, Ven has received formal training from an actual Keyblade Master. This means, naturally, that he knows a lot more about the different things a Keyblade can do. Because of this, his fighting style is slightly more refined than Sora's. To make this short, his abilities are as follows:
Physical: When compared to Aqua and Terra, Ven is very fast and agile. This reflects in his fighting style, since he's way better at dodging and attacking enemies from behind than he is charging them head on. His strength is notably lower than Terra's and Sora, but he makes up for this by being able to hack away and combo enemies faster than either of them can.
Magic: Like most every playable character in the wonderful world of Kingdom Hearts, Ven is capable of using both offensive and healing magic. Although he's obviously nowhere near Aqua's level of magic, he's capable of using some pretty powerful wind and light based spells. It's important to note that the two spells exclusive to him are, unsurprisingly, wind and light based.
Keyblade Glider: Also known as: one of those things only trained Keyblade wielders can apparently do. As the name implies, Ven is able to turn his Keyblade into a glider which he can use to fly around and even travel to other worlds. The design is different for each Keyblade wielder, and Ven's glider takes the form of what seems to be a large hoverboard.
Keyblade Armor: Also another one of those things that only trained Keyblade wielders can seem to do. By tapping that weird chunk of metal on his shoulder, he can activate his armor. Aside from being practical when fighting against people who have sharp, pointy objects to stab you with, the armor's main function is to protect the user's heart from the darkness when traveling through the Lanes Between. This is as cheesy as it sounds.

Items/Weapons:
(one) His Keyblade, the Wayward Wind.
(two) The Wayfinder given to him by Aqua.
(three) Terra's old wooden Keyblade.

Sample Entry:
( VIDEO )

[Being that Ven has never taken a step outside of the Land of Departure until today, this is pretty much his first time seeing a cellphone. As such, it goes without saying that he's, um. Well. Pretty incompetent at using it. Incompetent, as in he's been mashing the buttons trying to figure out how to start a recording. When he finally stumbles across the video option, he's going to be startled as heck.]

Whoa-- [...also holding the phone upside down. Not that he knows this means his recording is also upside down, anyway.] Didn't think it worked like that...

[He scratches his cheek for a moment, squinting at the phone and trying to figure out where to go from here. He still needs to know if Terra's been in this place, so...]

If anybody's listening-- I'm Ventus, but you can call me Ven. [SMILING, just a tad bit awkwardly. This is so weird.] I'm looking for a friend of mine. His name's Terra. He's dressed kind of like me, about this tall...

[And, he'll be stretching his arm as far as it can goes. Thank you, KH height proportions.]

If you've seen him around, could ya tell him I'm looking for him? [.....???] Thanks for listening.

[OKAY, YEAH. That's probably as good as it'll get. After fumbling with his cell phone some more and blocking the camera with his thumb twice, he manages to end the recording.]

Sample Entry Two:
Ven wasn't sure of what he expected to find out there, exactly, but he was pretty sure this wasn't it. Even if he wasn't familiar with the way the Lanes Between worked, he didn't really need to be in order to figure out this situation was the farthest thing from normal. After all--in a normal situation, all he needed to do was aim his Keyblade and create a portal that would allow him to get out of here. In a normal situation, you don't suddenly wake up in a run down city in order to find out you're trapped with hundreds of strangers from other worlds.

Suddenly, returning home to get scolded sounded amazing.

Still, he refused to let this whole thing get him down. Giving up was the last thing anybody should do in a situation like this, after all. As long as everyone here kept trying, he was sure they would find a way out soon enough. They had to, for Terra's sake. If they all didn't find a way out of this city as soon as possible, then he didn't know what was going to happen to his friend. If he didn't catch up with Terra soon, then--well. He shouldn't think too much about it. Thinking about negative things like that has never done any good.

Holding back a sigh and being careful not to trip over any of the debris on the streets, he finds himself reaching for one of his pockets. His Wayfinder, despite its status as a real good luck charm still being up for debate, was one of the most comforting sights he had seen all day. Even if he had no way of knowing how his friends were doing, having this was more than enough to remind him of the unbreakable connection they shared. He thinks, for a moment, that maybe both Aqua and Terra are looking at their own Wayfinders at this very moment.

Gently squeezing the star-shaped charm in his hand, he pockets it once again. "Don't worry, guys," he says, grinning more to himself than anything else in particular. "I'm coming."

Even if it took forever.

Haruka Nanase | Free! Iwatobi Swim Club | reserved [2]

[personal profile] dreamship 2013-11-08 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: A quiet individual even as a child, Haruka Nanase has always been very reserved. He has a very girly name for a boy and prefers to be called by his last name; but while he doesn't mind the nickname of 'Haru' as much, he doesn't take kindly to the suffix of '-chan', which is affectionately added by two of his childhood friends despite the amount of times he tells them not to. Despite this girly name Haru isn't a very girly individual at all. He's a swimmer, and his entire life revolves around being in a pool. It's to the point where he used to tell the pool at his old swim club "I'm home" when he came for practice. (While he doesn't voice that aloud now, he still thinks of the water as his one place to be free.) His entire physical form is sculpted with strong, firm swimmers muscles, despite his lack of working out in a gym.

He lives a life both freely and quite restrained. Ever since childhood, he's grown up keeping to himself and worrying about stepping on toes. He doesn't like to upset people and tries his best not to, although sometimes it can't be helped. To avoid saying the wrong thing or offending someone, he opts for keeping silent and stays to himself a lot. Now, his concern for others doesn't make him a pushover by any means; he's very clear on things he likes or things he doesn't like, and it's quite difficult to get Haru to agree to anything he doesn't originally want to do. He's really stubborn in that regard, but it's not overly difficult to get him to agree if one bargains with the right chips. Makoto, Haru's best friend ever since Kindergarten, has become quite capable of knowing how to bribe Haru into anything... which is normally promising to take him somewhere to go swimming. In some ways, Haru is very impulsive; when it comes to swimming or fish, he will easily drop everything in favor of going to his two main passions. His impulsiveness had him suddenly changing from riding his bike to swim club to jogging from home after he had seen Rin doing it; that same impulsiveness has him going on late-night jogs to clear his mind, or randomly stepping up to assist with Rei's technique despite originally not wanting him in the club.

Swimming is just Haru's life. He's fast in the water, one of the fastest competitors in his district, but he rarely swims to compete. Only recently did he begin to look into swimming competitively, but it's never been his priority. Haru has always felt more comfortable in water than just on dry land, so he'd swim every chance he could get. When there's no indoor pool, he'll soak in his bathtub. He wears a swimsuit instead of underwear most of the time, so if the time arises where he can swim, he can shed his outer layers and jump in. This has, on more than one occasion, become quite a headache for his friends, as he would aim for whatever open body of water is available, from another school's pool to a fish tank. He spends a lot of time daydreaming and just gazing at the ocean. He swims because it comes naturally to him. Being in the water is where he's most comfortable; it's where he feels safe. When he feels ill, he's certain the water heals him. When he's having a bad day, just getting to swim will soothe his soul. It's times when he can consciously think of his reasoning for swimming that alert him when something's wrong: he swims because he wants to swim, but when he hurries to pools to get away from problems, he's fully aware of a problem.

Thankfully, there aren't many problems that surround his swimming. However, recent weeks have led to the resurfacing of rough childhood memories, including when Haru quit swimming in junior high. He normally isn't overly passionate about racing or competing, but the spirit and the urge of being victorious with his school team has actually driven him to care about things like times and techniques. He doesn't swim to compete just for himself: he'll compete because he wants to swim with them. This thought in itself is rather odd for Haru; he's not used to companionship, even now, but he's very attached to them and doing his best to help them all achieve a successful competition and relay together. His main problems come from his childhood, from his old friend Rin whom he had accidentally hurt during a little competition between the two. Racing against Rin and winning had torn apart their friendship, and Haru couldn't go back to swimming from that for years after; competing in the high school competitions meant going against Rin again, who was now with an opposing high school's team. But even Haru knows that losing wouldn't fix the problems, so he chooses to compete, for his current team and for a victory. He's competitive when he drives himself to be this way. From meeting Rin and seeing how competitive Rin had become in racing against him, he had begun changing his own style of doing things to put himself on par with Rin. Before they even began the Iwatobi Swim Club, Haru had been challenged to a race by Rin and immediately jumped for it--or almost, as the pool had no water when they were planning to dive in. He's not the most competitive, but when he drives himself, he sure can be.

Outside of the pool, Haruka's talents are just as they are underwater. He's a smart individual who makes excellent grades without seemingly trying. He's a very good artist, from drawing mascots and elaborate poster designs to whittling wooden keychains. He actually doesn't mind cooking and cleaning. He lives alone, as both of his parents work abroad, so he knows how to cook and has one specialty: mackerel with pineapple. He can cook other things, but he prefers grilling up a nice, fresh mackerel. If anything, mackerel is his second passion, as he is also easilly swayed by the promise of eating mackerel.

Even with all of these odd passions, he's not completely seclusive. He's often seen as very detached and distant, and while he doesn't outwardly make friends easily, it's not hard for him to accept someone into his circle. If anything, that's just how his friends are made. He met Makoto in kindergarten, and the friendly child spent much time around Haru, continued calling him a nickname he doesn't really like, and even breaks into his house to get him ready for school. And Haru has come to accept him enough to call him a 'best friend', along with just knowing when to push him and when to back off; Makoto himself has become almost a Haru expert in knowing what Haru's feeling based on his direct reactions. With Nagisa, the cheerful soul who invaded their practice during swim club one day, the boy has always been an eager and loud soul, and Haru rarely even calls him out on being too noisy even if he thinks he is. Haru did take longer warming up to Rei, as he thought Rei disliked swimming overall, but he was willing to help the moment he saw Rei trying to push himself. He's rather accepting of individuals for their odd traits, even if they may bug him. Hell, he's one of the few who actually called Gou 'Kou' upon request without being told twice. Rin has pretty much been Haru's only source of strife in terms of friendship, but even so, Haru's certain he'll come around.

Abilities/Powers: Haru has no special abilities outside of his ability to swim. An excellent swimmer, he can hold his breath underwater longer than most, but he's no mermaid.

Items/Weapons: Haru will bring Iwatobi Swim Team jacket and his relay first place trophy from his 6th grade competition.
