Applications Two

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
The next application opening date is Friday 16th January, 7pm EST.
The next application processing date is Friday 23rd January, 7pm EST.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

To see what we are looking for:
Canon Characters:
Sample Application (Faith Lehane)
Sample Application (Iroh)

Original Characters:
Sample Application (Mors)
Sample Application (Vera de Barr)
Sample Application (Malkus Iverwelling)

Previous Game History:
Sample Application (Abel Nightroad/Mayfield RPG)
Sample Application (Bolin/Discedo)

The old application post can be found here if you would like to look through past accepted applications.

Applications will be open on the following dates (from 7pm EST):
12th-19th December
16th-23rd January

Applications will be processed on the following dates (at 7pm EST):
19th December

Ah sorry about that!

Jotaro was a kind and loving boy in his youth. He possessed a very gentle compassion, a child-like innocence, and a healthy dosage of competitiveness. He loved his mother dearly, and openly, though it's highly likely she spoiled him growing up. Being the son of a famous jazz musician would probably do that to you, especially given he's hardly able to spend time with his son. Regardless, Jotaro eventually grew up to be a fine young man.

In his mother's eyes at the very least. In reality….

Jotaro is a two meter tall, extremely physically intimidating seventeen year old. There is no canon explanation for the sudden (and honestly worrisome) increase in body mass, nor the sharp change in his general demeanour. His brow is consistently creased, he very rarely smiles, and his general attitude towards everything can be described with the word "DISINTERESTED". But this doesn't mean he has changed deep down in his undoubtedly heavily muscled heart. If anything can be said about Jotaro, it's that, even now, in this stereotypical "delinquent" phase that most high school students go through, he retains his honesty from his youth. The love, effort and support his mother endlessly doted upon him did not go to waste. Kujo Jotaro looks like the most ridiculous radical badass, but deep down, he's the same as he ever was. Because mother knows best.

True to his "bad boy" look (I died a little writing that phrase, christ), Jotaro is a man of very, very few words. He feels that he doesn't need to speak much, as he believes you'd be able to tell how he feels on any given subject simply by looking at him, and so any additional effort in expressing his emotions is an apparent waste of time. Of course, given that he looks incredibly stern and angry at any given point is not glossed over in canon, which is why it has been stated his looks have lead him to numerous misunderstandings that then… devolve into physical brawls. But that isn't to say he won't call you out on your shit when he sees it, once outright saying to a complete stranger that they were full of shit. I said Jotaro retained his sense of honesty from his youth, and it shows. Jotaro has very clear opinions; he hates it when people victimise women, he doesn't involve innocent bystanders (not without a proper reason, anyway), and nothing sets him off more than when the strong use the weak for their own gain. Or hell, even just because. He's the type of man you'd call "an ally of justice", and… frankly, there was even a point in canon where he outright states this himself. Thusly, he's something along the lines of someone who protects the weak, and the kind of heart.

Despite this though, Jotaro is, by default, very abrasive and often comes across as unnecessarily rude. He hates clingy people, and though minute doses applied sparingly - a pat on the back, a reassuring hand on his shoulder, platonic gestures like those - are tolerated at best, he will tell you to fuck right off if you're crossing too many boundaries by hugging, clinging or outright fawning. His female classmates, or rather, only the ones who are constantly trying to cozy up to him, and own mother get the worst of this treatment as they're all always falling over themselves to be close to him, and though he will immediately jump to their defense should they fall under any real or life-threatening danger (keep in mind Jotaro did in fact travel half the world to save his mother), he is not above verbal abuse along the lines of "SHUT THE FUCK UP, YOU BITCH, YOU'RE ANNOYING". While this is problematic, incredibly so by today's standards, if there's anything good to say in regards to this, it's that no matter what he tells them, no matter how forcefully or rudely he tells (and yells) at them to stop, they don't (and are in fact, strangely encouraged as they seem to deem his attitude as "cool"), and that he would never, ever raise his hand against a woman or a child. Typically, he's the kind of guy who keeps his thoughts and his hands to himself. If you're capable of putting these traits into practice, that is, you don't overstep boundaries by unnecessarily probing, you don't fawn over him at every possible chance (or at all, for that matter), and you're, for the most part, a good person, Jotaro is more than capable of treating people like people; with respect.

Still, calling your own mother a bitch is taking things a little far, and you'd think that as his mother, of all people, she would step in to berate him for that kind of language, but she very cheerfully complies instead….. yeah I don't really understand this family. While it's unclear whether her complete and utter inaction helped to further concrete this sort of behaviour or not, it's undeniable that Jotaro is actually kind of a huge dickhead. He's beaten thugs so badly before that some were forced to remain in hospital indefinitely, he's intimidated a cocky and arrogant school teacher so thoroughly that they never returned, and when restaurants serve him bad food, he'll walk out without paying. His logic is thus: those thugs deserved to be beaten and likely came after him first, that school teacher was half-assing it and taking advantage of his students anyway, and for god's sake, if you're selling a product to someone, at least make sure it's halfway decent, else you're just cheating people out of their money. If you squint, you can see that good intentions are there, he's just incredibly blunt and straight forward when it comes to dealing with "evil". And maybe not just evil either. He is extremely curt with virtually everybody he meets, speaking only when he feels there is a need for it. You can probably imagine how ~fun~ and ~engaging~ he is when it comes to regular conversation then. Guy doesn't seem to appreciate when someone has a sense of humour either. Kujo Jotaro plays everything completely straight. What a snooze fest.

I wish that was all I had to say about Jotaro, but there's more to him than "stoic badass". He is a very calm individual, remaining so in even the worst of situations. He takes nearly everything in stride and will never be seen panicking, choosing instead to coolly keep his feelings under wraps so he can calmly and rationally deal with whatever is ailing him. This tendency results in people seeing him as kind of an anchor; they see him keeping calm, and they in turn settle down themselves. I suppose you could say he has somewhat of comforting aura. Regardless, he's helpful to have around in stressful situations. Of course, Jotaro still does have moments wherein people probe the limits of his temperance - usually at the expense of his pride and dignity - but overall, he remains level-headed and logical, using his quick-thinking and intelligence to see through any hardships. On top of this, Jotaro does in fact possess the capacity to be kind. He feels grief and concern just like regular people would, but due to his nature, he inquires about such things only when absolutely necessary, or when he's the only person around to ask - and even then, he's incredibly brusque and to-the-point. But normally, he'd prefer to let other people do the worrying while he quietly listens in. Being overt when it comes to his feelings, particularly positive ones, isn't quite his strong suit and, frankly, it would tarnish the "hard-boiled" reputation he arbitrarily gave himself. He is certainly capable of harbouring feelings of affection; the love for his mother and respect for his grandfather and peers are just two examples of this, he simply chooses not to act on them. You can always tell how he feels simply by looking at him, remember?

So tl;dr, Jotaro is essentially your typical badass with a heart of gold. Respect and his favour in general are not things that are given freely; all that that entails has to be thoroughly earned. But on the off chance you're lucky enough, Jotaro is extremely dedicated, loyal, and utterly unwavering in his ambitions.

Good luck dealing with him on a day to day basis though, the guy is as interesting as a brick wall. I mean under hobbies, hobbies - things you like to do in your spare time - he's got "LIKES READING BOOKS ABOUT BOATS AND PLANES".

Maybe he's not actually that "cool" after all.

Please let me know if you need anything else!

Hi! I absolutely agree with the concerns, and if Tony is accepted, I am going to drop Thor so that I don't end up in a selfcest situation. I'm just more comfortable with Tony, so I would like to go with him instead. Sorry for the confusion and trouble.

Okay, does someone want to tell me what's going on here?

[It feels like the weirder things have gotten over the years, the more Leon has graduated from That Guy No One Listens To to The Guy No One Tells Anything. He remains pretty calm, but he can't stop a little of the exasperation from bleeding into his voice.]

Don't all speak up at once.

[Is the device even connected? He pauses to confirm that it's on, then realizes that maybe being abrasive isn't the best way to get answers. Leon takes a breath and lets it out, sighing as he starts again.]

Look, I don't know who you are, but I've got business I need to get back to. It's important. I don't have time to play games.

[His tone becomes more serious; weighted by tension. While the mission is technically over, he still needs to know everything is okay. China wasn't in the best condition, and there's the mess he left back home to worry about. He's still a little tense. And seeing as he has no idea where he is now or what is going on, it looks like it'll be another mess he has to get himself out of. Luckily no one can see him roll his eyes.]

Nice place you got here. Real friendly.

REVISE

[personal profile] crashfunction 2014-11-22 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: Red is a woman of thought, planning, and action. She's also a woman of great talent, having spent five years in the top percentile of performing artists. However, despite her predilection to take action and her vocal occupation, Red is a private person. Even when she had her voice she was rare to explain the why behind her actions, whether it be selecting two non-traditional disciplines (music and linguistics, she cited "personal reasons" as her motivation) at a school that excelled in civic planning or the influence and meaning behind her music. Once she makes up her mind it usually doesn't matter what other people say or think, she executes the action that she's decided will be best without her resolve wavering. This can be seen multiple times such as when she turns left, back to the city instead of right as the Transistor directs her, or at the end when she decides to join him within the Transistor despite his great protests. This ability to plan, decide, and act is key to Red's personality, especially without her voice. She's not the type to sit around and waffle over a decision for ages; she simply takes what she has and knows, and makes up her mind without much drama or hesitation. That is not to say that she rushes into situations without thought or consideration, rather she shows great insight and understanding for the world around her, such as when she realized the effect her music had on people and took measures to cause as little disturbance as possible until she was ready to face the public again. Even when shaken, her resolve is quickly restored and she is able to move to action as necessary, as shown by her quick recovery from the Camerata's attack (which robbed her of her voice and the life of her lover) and her acquisition of the Transistor.

Speaking of the Transistor, his story is shrouded in even more privacy and mystery than Red's. Before the Camerata's attack he had a life and body of his own, though it was very closely tied with Red's, but as a result of the attack was reduced to simply a consciousness within the Transistor, the weapon meant to take Red's life. In the process of this transfer of consciousness nearly all of his "trace data" (that is to say, the data history linked with his being) was corrupted (and unrecoverable), which is how he likes it. If Red is private then "Mr. Nobody," as he once jokingly refers to himself, is a ghost. (It should be noted that "the Transistor" is the weapon and "Mr. Nobody" is the personality, but he refers to himself as the Transistor now that he inhabits it. The powers of the Transistor are independent from him though he can understand some of the workings of weapon from the inside.) What data remained after the transfer into the Transistor indicates that Mr. Nobody did not make a selection for a course of study, citing "Still figuring things out" as his reasoning. Not only is this unusual to the point of uniqueness, but he also did not enter any of his data into the Cloudbank census, meaning that he could not be tracked or pinpointed whatsoever. All of this indicates how private he is, preferring to simply not exist and not conform to the norms of society.

While he hides himself behind privacy and a lack of information, he does have his own thoughts, opinions, and personality which can be discerned by his running commentary and chatter, the only thing he really has left of his previous life. Now inside the Transistor, he can do nothing but talk, but he does enough of it to make up for Red's silence. Talking is the only way he can affirm that he still is "alive" in some sense, and this reassurance of his existence is a major contributing factor behind how chatty and talkative he is. However, he does his best to keep this worry private as to not worry Red- a common motivation for his actions- by doing things such as assuring her that he's dead and that this is a new life for him. Occasionally he slips up and reveals that he wishes to be outside of the Transistor, alive again, such as when he wishes he could touch her again. From the very start it is clear that he and Red are very close (lovers, revealed later in the game) and that he tries to protect and support her, as he gives his life to save her from the Camerata's assassination attempt. As a voice inside the Transistor he realizes that all he can do is support Red, and strives from then on to do so. He gives her advice, encouragement, reminds her of how great she is (and how much he loves her), and does his best to warn her of dangers and keep her safe. Even when Red makes decisions that he advises against (usually ones that put her in more danger) he doesn't berate her or argue, he simply does his best to help her in the new course of action. Part of that is because he believes in her and trusts that she'll make the right decision, and part of it is because he knows that arguing is useless, even if he doesn't agree. Mr. Nobody isn't shy to voice his reservations and concern over her safety, and certainly is more hesitant than Red, but he doesn't push the issue and quickly switches to talking instead about taking down the Process and the Camerata, noting how they're going to pay for the attack that created this situation. The only time he argues with Red and begs her to change her mind is when she makes the decision to leave the (now empty) world of the living and join him within the Transistor. None of this is to say that all he does is worry and bash their enemies, he spends quite a bit of conversation time in upbeat chatter, commenting on the world around them, reminiscing about how things used to be, and even making the occasional joke. He has humorous streak and knows how to hold a pleasant conversation with people when they're around. The fact that he manages this despite the constant danger and bleak situation shows that he's generally positive, a contributing factor to his trust in Red's decisions.

While Red is decisive and action oriented, that is not to say that she is always moving and pressuring. She loves her own share of fun and relaxation, whether that be napping in hammock or eating pizza from Junction Jan's (Sea Monster is the only choice, really). It's easy to put a smile on her face and she's friendly enough with the people she gets to know. As a music idol, she's not a stranger to people, fans, and the spotlight, but Red doesn't surround herself with masses of people, but rather a few close souls that are important to her. Those are people that she can rely on in times of duress, for she is not always unshakable and has her moments where she needs to know she's not alone. During those moments she needs reassurance and support from those she loves, and that's when she does the rare thing of explaining her inner mind, letting her worries and thoughts be seen by the people close to her heart. She carries two new weights as well: the well-being of the Transistor and the loss of her voice. Even though she still has her actions left, her voice was her career and life, and her songs were her way of communicating her inner thoughts to others (though a bit obtusely). After the attack, the Transistor is her link to that old life, since the voice and mind now within it was the closest person to her and her work. Not only does that connection exist, but the voice in the Transistor is the only thing she has left of her lover, and so she relies on him for support.

Even though she does not necessarily share her mind with just anyone, Red still thinks about the people around her and shows them consideration. Although she can act selfishly, it is not until she has been driven into a corner and there is no one left to consider, such as when she has the option to rebuild Cloudbank despite all the citizens being Processed but instead chooses to enter the Transistor. Although she could have simply run away from the Process and Camerata (as the Transistor urged her to do) she decides to fight them to protect the city and the people within it. Red understands that even after being given a tool that can erase and rebuild her city at will that the true heart of things lies within people and society, and she holds those things to be extremely valuable, even more than her own life. Much of her music shows that she considers free will and diversity of thought to be important aspects of being and existing (We All Become and Signals), which is a contributing factor to her silence on her own opinions as she does not want to influence the opinions of others. As such, she promotes individuality and even fights for it when resources (such as the Transistor or her music) are made available to her. And fight she will, as Red shows no hesitation to combat the Process and the Camerata when they start attacking Cloudbank. She's protective of those around her and has a fierce streak, which also comes out in her music (In Circles). This ferocity ties into her determination and willingness to take action, and is quite easy to see as Red tears off the bottom of her concert gown, dons a jacket of her dead lover, and takes her newly acquired Transistor into battle against an enemy she never knew existed.

Absolutely!

Padmé experiences a compelling transformation from her girlhood to her death. Before (and during) the events of the Phantom Menace, the young Queen proves herself to be strong-minded, diplomatic and willing to make hard decisions if they benefit her people. The safety and peace of Naboo matters the most to her and she shows little interest in more personal matters. It is revealed in her backstory that she even has romantic interests - before she meets Anakin and during her early Senatorship - yet she chooses to serve the people of Naboo rather than lose herself in a serious relationship with anyone.

However let it not be said that family doesn’t matter to her. She loves her family dearly and they are part of the reason she throws herself into politics so vigorously. When she began to soften towards a certain young Padawan in Attack of the Clones, what she felt for Anakin - the empathy and protective instinct - before grows stronger and, before she knows it, she begins to see him as a mixture of family and potential love interest. Naturally, she tries to avoid any romantic attachments - because she knows it will inevitably interfere with her career as a Senator (and the fact that it would put Anakin in more danger). Yet, by the end of the second movie, she knows it’s a lost cause.

”She is an astonishingly accomplished young woman, who in her short life has been already [an] elected Queen of her planet, a daring partisan guerrilla, and a measured, articulate, and persuasive voice of reason in the Republic Senate.

But she is, at this moment, none of these things.

She can still play them--she pretends to be a Senator, she wields the moral authority of a former Queen, and she is not shy about using her reputation for fierce physical courage to her advantage in political debate--but her inmost reality, the most fundamental, unbreakable core of her being, is something entirely different.

She is Anakin Skywalker's wife.”

-Excerpt from Matthew Stover’s Revenge of the Sith novel.

Once Padmé admits to herself - before she and Anakin are led out into a gladiatorial ring to be executed in Attack of the Clones - that she loves him, she resigns herself to giving him every inch of her that isn’t already invested in politics. Of course it isn’t long before that line is crossed and the young Senator finds herself torn between the man she loves and the duty she has carried since childhood. Yet still, she fights. There is no quitting or admitting defeat for her and she ceaselessly, tirelessly searches for the light at the end of the tunnel.

She isn’t an optimist or a pessimist. Rather, she is a realist who does her best to take what she sees - the good and the bad - and tries to find ways to fix it or make it better. She also has a keen sense of people and their intentions. While she is obviously not connected with the Force like the Jedi, she does notice when someone has ill intentions (like Palpatine). Perhaps that is due to her training as a politician or the fact that Padmé usually follows her heart (unless diplomacy is needed - then she follows her head).

Yet all the training in the world can’t prepare her for the path Anakin decides to take. Once she realizes he has stepped over to the Dark Side in the third movie, Revenge of the Sith, her heart is broken. All of her plans for their future - including their child/children - are demolished. Logically she knows that approaching him is dangerous, but, with Anakin, her mind is never logical. She loves him too much and far too deeply.

It’s tragic that her decision to plead for him to return to sanity is one of the last decisions she ever makes. Even so, she believes in his goodness. The boy she met so long ago - and the man he became - are worth fighting for and she doesn’t believe they are dead.

Padmé’s feelings for Anakin are the main catalyst for her transformation, however there are other, smaller, catalysts too. All throughout her political career, she finds herself not only arguing with other politicians in great chambers, but also fighting on the front lines in various battles. By doing so, she demonstrates that she is a woman who can - and will - back up her word. She doesn’t fear death or injury to herself. In fact, it hurts her far more to consider the deaths or injuries of her people. For them she will fight in any arena necessary.

She also demonstrates that she has a powerful tactical mind. It’s obvious that she is bright, but she is also humble enough to learn from those who have been in politics or the military longer than her. From them, she strengthens her skills to better serve her people and/or those in her charge.

However, in the end, despite her passion, bravery, wisdom and love, Padmé reveals that she is a young, vulnerable woman who does, when Anakin is involved, have a naive heart. Perhaps she knows her heart is a fragile thing from the beginning - and that’s why she avoids long-lasting romances - yet all of her avoidance doesn’t save her from feeling the joy and pain of love. After giving birth to Luke and Leia, she loses the will to carry on because everything she has worked for and loved - politics included - has turned black and empty. Even the promise of new life isn’t enough to keep her living.

”Obi-Wan... there... is good in him. I know there is... still... “

But she does pass on her belief in a brighter future. By the end of the third movie, Padmé hasn’t lost any of her admirable qualities, but she is, at last, showing her weaknesses. Unfortunately her weaknesses - thanks to the events involving Anakin - are enough to end her life. However, for the purposes of the game, she will be forced to face her weaker self and, perhaps, find a new strength from it.

Sample Entry Two:

The mood was always tense just before a drop. It was true in the armed forces, back before he joined SHIELD, when magic and gods and old buried secrets were pulp for comic books back home. Back then his greatest worry had been keeping his boys alive inside hostile enemy territory in some God-forsaken spit of sand and mud, and whether or not the five year old eying them from across the street might be hiding an AK under the rubble of what had once been his home.

Now, the world had changed. Alien invasions had made the news, wormholes to other dimensions had split the skies, and Rumlow was doing precisely what he knew how to do, which was shoot, stab, or incapacitate anything that got in his way. The men huddled around, the other members of STRIKE, waiting to be sent out? They were all just men, facing unimaginable levels of insanity for the supposed purpose of keeping everyone safe back home. Who wouldn't be a little tense before wading out into the world they lived in today?

From the back of the squad, he took a slow, quiet breath. Focus. Keep everything in perspective. Never forget the end game. Striding forward, he made sure to clap Rollins hard on the back of the shoulder as he stepped through the ranks, moving towards the front of the line and requisitions officer.

"Alright, milk run. We get in, secure the package, we get out. This is not an intel op," he called out, loudly enough for the assembled men to hear, even towards the back of the room still packing their gear up. "We don't stop to ask questions. We don't chat with the locals. We wrap this up before midnight, and every man on the squad gets a beer on me."

That seemed to help loosen them up somewhat. He saw a few grim smiles, but any of the excitable ones had long been cut loose from the team. The people in STRIKE now? Lived up to their name.

There was a pause as the clerk behind the gated window hurriedly flipped through the pages in front of him, taking long enough that Rumlow turned to eye the man. No raised voice, just a long, steady stare before quietly uttering, "Is there a problem?"

The clerk cleared his throat. "Ah well, there seems to be a typographical...well, the form hasn't been properly...I'm sorry, sir, I'm going to have to see this filled out again before I can authorize you t--"

Still eying the man steadily as if daring him to do something about it, Rumlow reached past the window opening, plucking out his gun. The team behind him had fallen quiet, staring as well. The clerk's mouth moved open and shut for a moment before hastily scribbling something down on the sheet and smiling sheepishly. God damn bureaucrats and their red tape and their fucking paperwork, he had no patience for any of it. Just let him get to shooting someone already.

Hoisting his weapon onto his shoulder Rumlow stepped away from the window, footfalls heavy on the ground. "STRIKE team, move out!"

I hope it's alright that I pretty much rewrote the whole thing. I feel like that personality section was just a train wreck.

Personality:
Have you ever met that one person who can't go two sentences without fitting a 'sorry' in? That's Mikan Tsumiki in a nutshell. However, there is most likely no spectacle such as her in real life, as the absence of respect she has for herself is too great to compare to reality. She apologizes because she believes she can't do anything right - after all, she's just useless, pathetic garbage. She speaks of herself the way any average person would speak of someone they absolutely despise - of course, this is since everybody hates her and she's just speaking on their behalf. She is extremely terrified of all things be it Satan or having a normal conversation - but with good purpose, as she doesn't deserve to have any more confidence. This reasoning is the result of her spiral into the current state of severe self-hatred she harbors, which presumably began at a young age.

Mikan's life before being whisked away to Jabberwock Island isn't a big, happy memory she likes to revisit like most people do. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Despite the minimal insight the audience gets about her backstory, it is revealed that Mikan suffered abuse by 'everyone around her.' She mentions that others would kick her, slather mud on her, pour water on her, and give her cigarette burns in public. This is what led to her current mindset; the people around her made her feel so worthless that she began to believe her existence was a waste. However, she seems to feel no emotion when telling this to the protagonist, Hinata. This hints at her being accustomed to abuse and her own futility, but it also shows how corrupted she was by her home life that she isn't upset when talking about her sensitive past.

She had no one to treat her wounds or nurse her when she was hurt by others, so eventually she learned on her own for her well-being. From the time she was born to her senior year of high school, Mikan was fending for herself with no allies. She had no one to rely on, no shoulder to cry on, and not even anyone to speak to as a regular person would to another regular person. On the surface level, this can explain why she is so socially inept - her only real conversations with people who didn't seek to harm her were in high school. But if one looks at this trait further, it is evident that she is very lonely and craves attention.

To get the attention she desires, she often 'falls' into quite suggestive poses that almost always show her undergarments. For how desperate and pathetic these attempts may seem, they work. While many of her classmates usually brush her off or are otherwise rude to her, many of them seemed concerned both times she did this in canon. There were few that were still rude though - such as Hiyoko Saionji.

Hiyoko is relentlessly brutal toward Mikan during the course of the game. Her trademark insults are 'ugly pig' and 'dirty bitch' for Mikan, which say a lot on their own. Many times, Mikan takes these insults as if they have been the truth all along and apologizes for them.

"Hiii! I'm sorry for being an ugly pig!"

To contradict this acceptance, there are times when Mikan questions Hiyoko:

"W... Why are you so meeeeeeeean?!!"

This is a nod back to her early life; she knows, in a sense, that she is everything Hiyoko makes her out to be, but she can't understand why. Subconsciously, some part of Mikan is gripping desperately onto the hope that she doesn't really deserve the hate she gets.

The lack of sympathy she receives leads her to believe that there isn't a single person in the world who would give her a minute of their time. As a result, she resorts to practically making herself a slave for others because that was the only way they would ever like her.

"To lift up the atmosphere, I would eat strange bugs; when people had no paper to write on, they'd write on my body; when borrowing money, they'd make several liabilities. I was also a dartboard for their bordedom... You see, I can be of help too!"

Her distorted views come from what others did to her in the past - to avoid being abused and humiliated, she abused and humiliated herself. This act eventually became normal and expected even from those whose intentions were not to hurt her. She states that even though she doesn't enjoy performing these stunts, she feels she has to in order to earn everybody's happiness and acceptance of her. When she thinks someone she is talking to is becoming bored or unimpressed with her, she will offer herself as a source of entertainment to avoid their disapproval. If they refuse her self-mutilation, she will become confused and think she did something wrong. This is clear in one of her conversations with Hinata, where he seems upset and disturbed by these tendencies. She tells him she'll gladly let him doodle on her body or she'll make a pig face for his amusement, but he refuses. She responds with:

"I'll do it... I'll do it right now... Just please don't look at me like that! ... I'm sorry... I'm terribly sorry... I'll make sure to get it right... I'll make sure to get it right the next time... So please talk to me again! Eeek! I beg of you!"

Another issue of hers, as mentioned above, is her loneliness. But as she grew more advanced in the field of nursing, she began dealing with patients' sickness and injuries rather than just her own. This made her realize that her patients will actually listen to her, as they are sick and she is one of the only people who can cure them (being a nurse). They are weaker than her - if a sick person is ignored, then they'll eventually die - which makes her words absolute. They need her and they depend on her. This philosophy gives her a sense of security and happiness. Without her nursing abilities, Mikan would be completely alone.
