Applications Two

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
The next application opening date is Friday 16th January, 7pm EST.
The next application processing date is Friday 23rd January, 7pm EST.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

To see what we are looking for:

Background/History:

From the looks of it, Fujimaru didn't come from the happiest of families—namely because his mother gleefully sold him to the Tokyo Central Government when he was ten, even as he pleaded for her to save him. There, it was discovered that he had the potential to become a tekigousha (roughly "compatible person", otherwise known as people whose right arm possess strange abilities). With this, his mother's fortune—and Fujimaru's fate—was sealed.

The government amassed countless people, experimenting on them to see who possessed the aptitude to be a tekigousha. Those who lacked such a thing were disposed of; 'fortunately' for Fujimaru, he became one, as mentioned. He went through brutal experimentation, as others died or turned into monsters around him—and all the while, watching from the other side of the window, was Kuroyuki, the woman behind all this.

And so, Fujimaru survived, effectively becoming Kuroyuki's "pet dog", with her reminding him that with her being his "owner", he should do his best to remain in her good graces. Needless to say, Fujimaru both feared and despised her, acting defiant but ultimately never openly rebelling against her as he became further dead inside. What was perhaps his only source of solace was a fellow experiment by the nickname of K.K., who was taken in by the government around the same time as him and so grew up with him.

When Fujimaru was fourteen, the world changed. All Fujimaru could personally say about it was that there was a thunderous sound and some kind of impact, before he was allowed to step outside for the first time since being sold—and what lay before him was a shattered world, and Kuroyuki claiming that they were going to save everyone.

In other words, Tokyo became an isolated island, with seemingly no help from anyone else, and so fell into post-apocalyptic ruin. Kuroyuki, as head of the Tokyo Central Government, initiated rescue operations, setting herself up as the saviour of the people. However, as it turned out, she was nothing more than a dictator. With her army of tekigousha, no one could dare defy her, instead resigning themselves to their poverty and having their freedom stolen. Anyone who tried to rebel was taken away, supposedly to labour camps—though in reality, they were being sent to be experimented on and turned into tekigousha.

At some point, Fujimaru was designated as Ward Chief of Hachiouji, where he set up an entire security system in a week (in addition to being the one responsible for the system in Shinjuku, the government's headquarters).

Personality:

"What have you heard about the tekigousha? Ha... that it's like being a pet dog, living the life of luxury...? It's actually more like... being a prisoner."

Fujimaru is one bleak-minded jerk—but first things first.

The first thing most will likely notice about him is that he's abrasive and does what he wants. One of his coworkers comments on how he's a spoiled child, and while he's the furthest thing from being spoiled, what with his past, he does have the mannerisms. If he doesn't care about what you're saying/doing, he won't give you time of day, "shut up" is a phrase he uses quite often, etc. Either he doesn't understand social etiquette or utterly disregards it, as he's the type who'll kick down the door to enter a room, drive his motorcycle into a trailer without any heed for those who barely got out of his way, and so on and so forth. He's rather impatient and quick to lose his temper which, according to K.K., has been the case since he was young. He rarely smiles, with one person claiming that he always has a disagreeable expression on his face, though as Takeru notices, Fujimaru hardly has reason to be happy.

He's also a bit of a loner, especially since he and K.K. work in different districts. Despite betraying the government because of Takeru's words, Fujimaru initially has no intention of becoming his ally, instead planning on escaping by himself and keeping himself safe.

That said, he has a soft spot for the machines he communicates with. That's not to say he can't be caustic with them as well, as he'll do things like tell a wire to shut up and wait its turn, but he's generally much gentler with them than he is with humans. When I say he communicates with them, I mean he communicates with them—there have been a few occasions where it took others a few moments to realize that he was talking to the machines and not to them. He treats machinery like they're actual people, talking with and scolding them as he would any other human. For that matter, he's actually more openly concerned about them getting 'injured' and whatnot than he is about people. One could say that he's better at connecting with them than he is with other human beings.

At the end of the day, though, Fujimaru is a decent person past his rough exterior, even with other humans. This can especially be seen in his friendship with K.K., whom he's quick to try and help and whose lack of self-preservation he often worries over, even if he mainly expresses said concern through yelling and berating. He's never gentler than he is abrasive, but once he warms up to you, he's a loyal friend who wants to do what he can. He admits to himself that he doesn't really understand what being a 'good friend' means, but he seems willing to try, in a "I'm never going to admit I care even if it's obvious I do" sort of way. Conversely, though, it's a bit of a shock to him when others return the favour, as seen when he initially protests K.K.'s rescue of him, as it means K.K. will become a traitor—Fujimaru seems utterly surprised that K.K. would go that far for him. On a similar note, however, to Fujimaru, if you help his friends, you've helped him as well, to the point where he breaks down crying in gratitude towards Takeru for saving K.K.'s life and claims that he's in his debt.

Similarly, though Fujimaru may sometimes act tough, he's far more fragile and damaged than he cares to admit—or in Takeru's words, he's "been killing himself for too long". He's easily put in a state where he becomes unresponsive or at least stands around in a daze, whether through trauma or uncertainty. His mother in particular is a sore spot for him, as he's never really gotten over the way she abandoned him, and it's implied that he can't stand being called by his last name because it reminds him of her. That and the subsequent gruesome experimentation he went through broke him near completely. For all of his defiance, he's evidently terrified of Kuroyuki in some ways and can't negate the fact that he is, for all intents and purposes, her "pet dog". He's resigned to the fact that she always wins, and so ultimately obeys her every order, even if it sickens him. He's stood back and watched countless people die—maybe even had a hand in some of their suffering—because he doesn't believe there's anything that can be done about it. He hates himself for what he does, but his despair and hopelessness wins out in the end.

In what seems to be something of a coping mechanism, Fujimaru occasionally comes across as being in denial. K.K. notes that ever since Fujimaru was young, he was the sort who'd become stoic and expressionless whenever he was trying to deny something to himself, and true enough, Fujimaru doesn't seem to be entirely honest—both to others and himself. He dislikes revealing vulnerability, such as the fact that he cares or his power's side effects. Therefore, as mentioned, he tends to try and seem tougher than he actually is, like sometimes ramping up the jerk attitude.

Put in a darker light, however, that particular tendency is also because he accepts that he's a horrible person for what he does and won't make excuses for himself, no matter how sympathetic his past may be. He tries to convince Takeru—and perhaps himself—that things are fine the way they are now and that it's better to live in comfort as scum than to fight for your freedom. After all, he's given up on everything, and so trying to have a heart will only make things so much worse for himself. If nothing else, it's too late for him by this point. He can't be redeemed.

—But ultimately, Takeru actually gets through to him. At heart, for all his cynicism and scathing remarks about Takeru's optimism, Fujimaru is still a child, and as such, possesses some of that youthful determination and idealism. When an old acquaintance of his claims that fighting for his survival doesn't suit a "sheltered pet tekigousha" like him, Fujimaru's only response is that though it may be tiring, he's doing just fine. Though his development hasn't fully kicked in yet at this canon point, he comes to believe that rather than accepting his fate as Kuroyuki's prisoner and trying to look out for himself, he should take responsibility for all the crimes he's committed. Fujimaru's guilt and the fear and misery Kuroyuki's instilled into him may never disappear, but that won't stop Fujimaru from fighting anymore.

And so, though Fujimaru may have a bleak outlook on the world, all he's ever really needed was the courage to hope—and now he finally has that.

Abilities/Powers:

As a tekigousha, Fujimaru's right arm possesses unique abilities. Specifically, his—noted a few times to be especially skilled amongst tekigousha—allows him to communicate with machines as long as his right hand has physical contact with them. This, along with his engineering skills, makes him a genius when it comes to machinery and electronics. He can easily hack into just about any system, diagnose what's wrong with a machine, fix it, etc. He can also create a variety of systems (such as the entire system of Shinjuku and Hachiouji, the latter of which was done in a week), as well as various devices, such as light sources and weapons. Chances are, if he's got the parts and time for it, he can build it.

His powers do come at a great risk, however. He actually doesn't have control over his ability, and instead needs the protector he wears around his right arm to keep it suppressed. If even just one belt that fastens his protector comes undone while his ability is active, his ability would constantly come out at full force, which in turn would directly damage his mind.

At full power, his arm can fuse with the machine and allowing him to hijack it to even greater extents, considering that he's now part of the machine. Needless to say, however, this appears to be rather painful and dangerous for Fujimaru, to the point where it can kill him, and is thus not an ability he cares to use except under drastic circumstances.

Items/Weapons: His arm brace crossbow, his explosives launcher, and a set of repair tools.

Sample Entry Two:

All things considered, Haven wasn't that different from what he was used to.

Though Fujimaru had had certain 'luxuries' as a tekigousha, he was all too familiar with the ruins of what used to be a city and the desolate atmosphere that hung above one's head. He wasn't even particularly surprised to hear talk of scientists and experimentations, as it was an old, sad tale that had been his life for the past number of years, really.

What was new to him, however, was the determination that still lurked within the captives. Fujimaru was used to arrogance and power lust—something that wasn't quite applicable here, without the government playing a close, direct hand in its people's suffering. He was used to despair and lost hope (things that had been a part of his own heart, not long ago), dwelling among citizens who realized that things were never going to get better.

But what Fujimaru found in Haven was people who hadn't given up yet.

Shakudou would've gotten along with a fair number of them, to be honest. By association, Fujimaru scoffed at some of the more optimistic attitudes, because there was a line he drew between being hopeful and being moronic. At the same time though, even if he would never admit it, it was inspiring, in a way. People here seemed so convinced they would find a way out of here. That they would find the solution to their problems, overthrow what seemed to be an unbeatable force (like that old hag), and win their freedom.

Freedom was a sentiment that Fujimaru barely even remembered, lost in his years of being Kuroyuki's prisoner. It was one he'd only just gained the courage to reach out for (and was yet again taken away, thanks to this place), and so, truth be told, the attitudes of the people here simultaneously infuriated and encouraged him.

(How was it so easy for them?)

Though Fujimaru thought he was past the point of wishing, he couldn't help but start believing again—that maybe they were onto something here. It was something he wanted to and didn't want to hope for. Hope was frightening; hope was exhilarating.

—But if he could win his freedom here, then maybe, just maybe, he could do the same thing back home, couldn't he?
