Applications Two

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
The next application opening date is Friday 16th January, 7pm EST.
The next application processing date is Friday 23rd January, 7pm EST.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

To see what we are looking for:
Canon Characters:
Sample Application (Faith Lehane)

Lilly Pendragon | Suikoden III | Not reserved

[personal profile] travelmate 2013-11-22 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Personality:
Lilly Pendragon is described as determined, competitive, and hard-driving. All of these are true. She’ll stop at nothing to achieve a goal even if she has a flimsy reason for it. She’s not afraid of taking action; in fact, it’s quite the opposite. She loves to take action, whether it’s running after supposed bandits or leading an army into battle. She’s not against getting her hands dirty when she has to as long as she has her attendants there to do most of the work for her. She is hard on her attendants, though--she even drives one to request a resignation at the end of Suikoden III.

She has both a strong sense of justice and a love for her people, even if it’s silly or over the top at times. At one point, she leads a charge against people simply because their faces look evil, and she gets her country involved in a war they should realistically be no part of simply because of how far they are from the conflict. Still, she’d do anything for her country. The whole reason for setting off on her adventure was to find the bandits who had been robbing Tinto caravans and traders.

She doesn’t always have a winning personality, though, and that’s an understatement. She’s arrogant and self-centered. She hates when people aren’t listening to her and when she doesn’t get her way. She expects privileges when she hasn’t earned any, such as being made co-leader of the new Fire Bringer army or getting the lead role in a play. She’s also quick to anger and very rude. She’s openly spiteful of the Duck clan when she’s frustrated with them, and she’s infamous for an incident at a royal ball where she got drunk, slapped one of the country’s knights, threw wine, and overturned tables in a brawl. The two of them became friends afterwards, however. If there’s one good thing that can be said about her, is that she’s somewhat good at making friends (she is a Star of Destiny, after all).

Her short attention span and poor planning skills are an endless source of grief for Reed and Samus, her attendants. She has poor planning skills, setting out to do one thing and then switching to another as often as she fits. She also fails to take into account things like money and supplies. Despite this, she loves traveling and adventuring...except for waking up early enough to leave the inn. She also has a tendency to overexaggerate her childhood. At one point, she was to be made Neclord's 70th bride and was rescued by Riou, but she was only a young child. As an adult, she believes she was part of the team that helped defeat him, even though she no longer remembers Riou.

Lilly, overall, is also a social and friendly person. She enjoys friendship, and she knows how to relax. At one point during the war, she writes a comment to Hugo, worried about the tense atmosphere and expresses a desire to take time and relax. She believes that people she travels with are important, calling them “travelmates,” regardless of how she met them. When she's friends with someone, she has enough sense to step back and not act entitled around them, such as when she tells Hugo she doesn't have to listen to her as an orde, and that'd it only be a favor between them.

As the daughter of a president, Lilly is also very spoiled. She had humble beginnings, however, and as a result, she has poor table manners. Still, she’s able to convince her own father to give her an army to aid a country on her own justice-focused whims, and like aforementioned, she expects a yes at nearly every turn. She thinks she's always right, and that her course of action is always the correct one. She loves her family--she really does, but as a result of the duties of her father, she’s not close with them at all anymore as well. It’s hinted at in an investigation that Lilly is lonely enough to warrant pity. It’s mentioned that her family stopped caring about her as much, which is why she continues to head wherever she wants and get anything she wants from her father.

Unfortunately for others, while Lilly may be slow to pick up on things or get ignored, her title isn’t just for show. While traveling in the Grasslands, she knew more about some aspects of the lore more than Hugo himself did, and he was the son of a chief. She also knew information about the terrain, hinting that not only did she use her Tinto scouts effectively, but that she was a good student in the past. Also, while at Budehuc castle, Juan complains about her personality but mentions that she’s a great fighter incapable of inflicting heavy damage. Not only does she lead a unit effectively in war, but she leaves to study in a distant land once the war is over. She’s more dedicated than she appears.

Lilly Pendragon | Suikoden III | Not reserved

[personal profile] travelmate 2013-11-22 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Abilities/Powers: In Suikoden, the player is allowed to equip Runes on a character that provide them with physical advantages or magical spells, and they're also a plot point in every game. They can be purchased in towns, born on a person, found in dungeons, or taken from people. Some people can use three, others two, and fewer others can use only one. Lilly Pendragon has two Rune slots, and I'll be assuming she uses a Thunder rune (she has a high affinity for thunder magic in-game and starts with a Sword of Thunder rune that wouldn't translate well to a game) and a Wind rune (she has a slightly less high affinity for wind magic, but it's still somewhat high). They do pretty much exactly what they say; thunder runes allow for electrical-based magic attacks, whereas healing provides support with wind, putting people to sleep, and healing.
Items/Weapons: Her sword, Platino. Her thunder rune. A toy duck. Yes...
Sample Entry:
[The cellphone feed clicks on, video. It’s just a normal communication, except Lilly is holding her face very close to the camera.]

Alright, then. I’ve come to understand that this magical device is known as a cellphone and that there are many people from the worlds over trapped within it. Today, I come to speak to our kidnappers. They can hear this, surely.

[She clears her throat and places it on her chest...not that anyone can see it. Instead, she just points her camera up at her nose instead. She’s a professional.]

I am Lilly Pendragon! I am the daughter of Gustav Pendragon, President of the Tinto Republic! As such, you’ve made a foolish and grave mistake. Worry not, fellow captives. I have no desire to return home. As of this moment, I vow to wield my sword and aid the expulsion of evil from this place so we all may return home! To keep me as a prisoner in such a filthy place...you have earned the vengeance of the entire nation, nay, our allies as well! You will regret this day, I wholeheartedly assure you.

[That’s it. That’s her speech. She stares into the phone for a second longer, makes a soft “hmph” sound and turns it off. Or so she thinks. She turns it over in her hands instead, treating the viewers to glimpses of her clearly medieval clothing. She continues to speak softly.]

Honestly...what an absurdly strange and useless device. If I wanted to talk to someone, I would speak to them face-to-face. It is only proper. Hm... [Oh. There are lots of...places to push. She starts pressing at random.] I hope Hugo and the Sergeant can forgive me. [An aggravated sigh.] It won’t do to leave them like that. Ah. Here it is.

[The feed cuts out.]
Sample Entry Two:
The entire place reeks, she decided. It was also extremely unpleasant to the eyes. It wasn’t solely because of the disrepair; the architecture was entirely foreign to Lilly. Sure, she could recognize them as buildings, but they hardly had any flair of the manors of Tinto nobility or the unique...character of the Grassland tribes nor the uniformity of the Zexen Confederacy. It was completely baffling to her. Had she truly made her way to another world?

...Part of her hoped that, yes, she had. It would make for an interesting adventure, after all, and there was surely evil to vanquish here. It was her wish, nay, her duty to assist the others here as a republic of Tinto! Yes. Exactly. She nodded to that thought as she walked the city, occasionally stopping to frown at something that she found distasteful. There were many things she found distasteful, but at least she had her sword at her side.

Her sword was, after all, perfectly useful for stopping evildoers, and it did not take her long to find one. It was a person walking too close to her...one look at them showed a suspicious face. There was no doubt about it. While walking the streets for the first time, she had already encountered one of her kidnappers! Or perhaps one of their allies? She drew her sword and thrust it towards the person without even bothering to stop and consider that they were a prisoner as well.

“You there! Halt! I wish to ask you a question!”

tofus: (♪ I'm the real thing I can see it)

[personal profile] tofus 2013-11-22 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: When Rise is first introduced in the game, she is only seen for a mere few seconds on a commercial for a drink.

The second time we see her, she much more subdued and seems to be exhausted. Almost a complete 180 from how she was acting before, even if her personality on the commercial was just an act.

But that leads us to the main question that plagues Rise; just who is she really? Idol, or normal schoolgirl? Target of strange fetishes and creepy guys, or target of ridicule and stereotypes?

Rise's not too sure who she really is. She's an idol (that's an easy enough answer), but as much as Rise works the idol gig and works it well, in some ways she dissociates herself from it. It's not in a way that she complete does and sees another girl performing her songs and going through her motions, but rather another self inside of her. The idol Risette plays her part, acting bubbly and excitable, adorable and friendly and open whenever it is necessary. In a sense, Risette is a fabrication. A personality that Rise was molded to be by her agency and the public who wished to see her that way.

As such, Rise doesn't see herself being the same as Risette.

Many wouldn't know that Rise was originally a shy young girl, picked on by others to the point where she had trouble making friends and was lonely from the result. Only in certain situations does she allow herself to be seen in that light, a personality that originated from before she became a famous idol. And most times, that personality only manifests in dire situations. Even the Rise that first started working at her Grandmother's tofu shop wasn't this personality. She rarely talks about her time before being an idol and if she does, it's to someone she completely trusts, like the protagonist after they've spent lots of time together.

But even if she started out being shy, started out feeling awkward, after being selected to become the latest idol and popstar, Rise was in an opportunistic situation. She saw hope for her situation, and readily thought that by taking this chance, she'd have friends. People that she could really confide in. This is one of Rise's most powerful traits; she is an optimist. She doesn't see hope in every situation or in anybody (particularly with these murder cases and the culprit himself), but she always has her faith in someone or some cause. During battles, she always backs up the rest of the team and even provides assistance in stat changes and healing, and even provides lots of words of encouragement during their progression into the TV worlds.

That's one part of Risette that bleeds into Rise, the unbound optimism. Not that the popstar persona hands out praises left right and center to everyone, but she definitely remains happy, friendly, patient and supportive towards her fans. She enjoys reading letters from fans, in particular one girl who's situation mirrored the young and friendless Rise, and knows how to deal with people, even if they seem rather... unwanted (when Mitsuo Kubo approached her, she remained polite and kind while he creeped her the hell out). Even though Risette gives strength and support to others, Rise herself finds that others give her strength and support as well, which could be why she was so eager to join the investigation team.

This says very little about her negative points though. For as reliable and upbeat as she is, Rise's negative points are about as extreme as her positive ones. She is petty as she is supportive. She's easily prone to having fits of envy as she is optimistic. In a lot of ways, these features of her personality can be easily described as childish. It makes sense, given Rise's age, that her faults still seem kind of young in comparison to maybe someone like Naoto. But that doesn't mean that she isn't a force to be reckoned with. When she's hit with the jealousy bug, it bites her hard. Rise's even yelled at Teddie and Yosuke once before for admiring another idol instead of her. She's outright ranted to the protagonist about spending time with Marie in the Golden version after the two girls met. In a good way, this makes her protective of her friends and loved ones. In a bad way, they're dealing with an idol who has a jealous streak a mile long when she wants and most times expects attention to be paid to her due to how she's been treated in the spotlight. Luckily enough, Rise isn't too terribly impulsive when she's in one of these moods, although she may do or say something later on that she'll regret.

And that really doesn't help when Rise's flirting comes into play. Because, oh boy, this girl can lay it on thick. Even if she's not the type to bare it all and open herself completely up to new people, she can get attached to others very quickly and holds no qualms for showing it. Mere days after rescuing her from the TV world and finally being introduced to the rest of the team, Rise wastes no time clinging to the protagonist's arm. It's a show that practically claims him as 'hers' and Chie even comments on how dangerous a girl like Rise really is. Some might consider this a play (she is an actress after all), but through her interactions with the rest of the cast, it's pretty genuine, even if it's just a show of general affection or something more.

These are all extra sides to Rise, at least that's how she would put it initially. The great popstar, the dangerous flirt, the immature jealous girlfriend. At first, she would probably tell you that these are all parts to her. Parts that don't make a whole girl. It's her biggest worry and biggest insecurity. She knows she can try to just blend into the crowd as easy as tofu can blend into a mix of flavours (according to her grandmother anyways), but whether she is who she is is a big question for her. It takes time, even after accepting her stripping, attention-seeking Shadow to realize that she doesn't put on a facade for whoever's looking. The facade's, the masks of the other personalities are pieces of a whole that create the friendly, lovely, caring, perky and insecure girl, not just separate personas.

Abilities/Powers: Through the circumstances of being thrown into a foreign world along with the personal issues of the characters themselves, Persona are strong weapons that only a few people actually possess. In Persona 3, the ability to wield a Persona is referred to as the Potential and there doesn't seem to be any real method to gaining that potential (other than to survive what's known as the Dark Hour). In this iteration, there is no Potential, but anyone who wields a Persona overcomes what's called a Shadow. Shadows are duplicates of people, mirror images of them that either display or want the person's deepest darkest desires or issues surrounding that person that are unknown to the public. Overcoming these hardships and facing the truth about one's self, turns the Shadow into a Persona.

Kanzeon is Rise's own unique Persona. It is actually a form that Rise gained when she found her resolution. Unlike many of the Personas found and used in the game by her friends, Kanzeon is different in that she's a non-combative Persona. Her support skills are her specialty, and she can help heal comrades by small amounts after the battle. Kanzeon's main use is information gathering. Rise can detect positions and weaknesses of enemies through her Persona, positions of missing people through means of knowing them a little bit, and also communication over distances through a psychic link. The finer details of her abilities are listed on Kanzeon's wiki page.

Items/Weapons: A cell phone, her school uniform and her pair of pink rimmed fog-defying glasses (they enable her to see clearly through the fog of the TV world).

Sample Entry: A slightly old meme thread

Sample Entry Two:

There was chanting.

Chanting of her name. Chanting for her to continue. Wolf whistles and cat calls mixed in with the applause. An encore was what they wanted after the last performance, but Rise, tired and panting behind the curtains, wasn't quite feeling the energy of the crowd this time.

As she wiped her brow with a towel, careful to avoid any make up, she couldn't help but sigh and give a tired look at the stage. They wanted more and she wouldn't mind giving it to them, but looking at the crew members hustling and bustling around her, was this it? Was this the kind of life she wanted? They were after all calling out for Risette, and not Rise Kujikawa. There's a difference isn't there.

"Five minutes, Kujikawa." Someone hurriedly passes her a bottle of water, momentarily breaking through the girl's thoughts. Five minutes, huh? Risette probably wouldn't hesitate to go there, and her fans wouldn't expect her to hesitate in giving them an extra performance.

But Rise herself...? She just wanted to hang back in her dressing room, escape this ridiculous dress, take off the make up and put her feet up. Just a little bit of me-time was all she wanted, even if it meant being alone in that room.

"Kujikawa," the stage director waved a hand in front of her, causing Rise to laugh sheepishly and reassure him that she was okay. She can tell by the look on his face that he doesn't quite believe her, but with a quick chug of her water and another bright smile, she bounces right back into Risette's role. Always smiling. Always ready to give her fans what they want when they asked. That's what being an idol is, right? Risette always pleases everyone.

Bringing herself to the edge of the curtain, she sighs briefly, letting her thoughts wander again. 'But am I just doing it for them, or for me? Do they really like me like this?' But a quick glance to her band mates and seeing them encourage her to step onto the stage helps. Well, whether what she does is in the name of Risette or is truly something she actually wants is a discussion for another time. It's best just to get the job done now.

"Risette can't keep her fans waiting any longer! Show time! Let's go!"

Gon Freecss | Hunter x Hunter | Reserved 2/?

[personal profile] goinggoinggon 2013-11-22 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: Gon is a Shonen protagonist. And as such he has a LOT of traits that Shonen protagonists typically share. First off, while he is far from the strongest character in the series, his personality is bold and inspiring. It’s to the point that he can drastically bring out the best in those around him, such as his best friend Killua. His blatant friendship and refusal to give up actually helped Killua find his first friend (him) as well as get over the curse his brother placed on him. He even stops in the middle of the Hunter exam when he sees that Leorio is about to fail the endurance test and doesn’t even speak a word, but yet Leorio gets the strength to finish it.

While one would think for someone to bring out this sort of reaction in others that they would have to be tall, courageous, and be a pinnacle of good, this isn’t quite the case. Gon is certainly courageous, but his ability to inspire other people actually comes from his simple and blunt personality as well as his ridiculous amount of trust in others. To the point of probably what could be considered borderline insanity.

He has had this kind of behavior since the start of the series. A personality that was more than likely formed from his simple life of living with his Cousin and Grandmother as well as his own adolescent naivety due to his age. Even from the get go when Mito promises him that he can take the hunter exam if he catches the Swamp King, he is actually naive enough to believe her, not knowing that she placed those boundaries because she didn’t believe he would accomplish such a feat. And to prevent a person from drowning he trusts two complete strangers (Kurapika and Leorio at the time) to catch him as he jumps overboard to save the man. They both state that it was reckless to have trusted them to catch him, but Gon simply states that he knew they would.

Gon’s thinking usually comes from the way he processes things in his mind. He sees things in a more black and white area as his solutions and dealings with people are simple and lack many shades of gray. In turn this actually makes him a better judge of character than most as he sees someone for simply who they are, ignoring any other details (As with Killua). And he figures if he IS wrong about a person, and they end up betraying them, he will deal with the consequences later as they come (As with Meleron). In battle his simple thinking is what enables him to think so quick on his as he can come to the conclusion of what needs to be done much faster than a regular person, and it enables him to avoid much pause in the heat of battle. This enables him to adjust to unexpected situations quickly and effectively.

In fact, even more effectively than Killua at times. During his fight with Hollow and Bat, he tore his pockets and spit on the cloth before plugging his ears with them to help block out the sound of Bat’s voice. And he also was able to poke a hole through their cooperative strategy. Also during an “unexpected situation” that occurred when Knuckle and Meleron could have been dead, he was the only one to access the situation and run forward without hesitation. While the others could only stare in awe. Gon has often times been criticized for his lack of experience which is very true, but at the same time, it is that very weakness that works out to his benefit. It’s much harder for him to accept defeat because he doesn’t fully grasp just how much stronger his opponent is and doesn’t see it as futile to keep fighting or trying. This is what enables him to come up with plans that would ordinarily be viewed as psychotic. Just as withstanding numerous torture techniques from Hanzo just so that he could win the fight without forfeiting (even though he had several other opportunities to win and become a hunter). And also sacrificing his hand just to land a hit on Genthru, A strategy that was so unexpected that it actually worked and he not only landed a kick, but was also close to landing a Jajanken: Rock if the bomber hadn’t stumbled and fell on a rock.

But while he has been shown to be quite insightful and quick to think on his feet, his line of thinking comes with a few draw backs. Such as he lacks the attention span as well as the brains to really work out anything that is too complicated. Steam can usually be seen coming from his ears during long winded explanations, and many times he charges into battle without thinking properly at all. That being said, he seems to realize this and has even agreed that yes, he can be an idiot, but that’s “his job”. He leaves the rational thinking to Killua because he is far better at it. He has said that it’s Killua’s job to stay calm and to in turn keep him calm so he doesn’t do anything dumb. And this has proved to be true numerous times in the series.

The negative side of this is that he might not fully grasp the danger in his predicaments either. Unlike someone who has had countless experiences in battles and could fully understand just how bad unexpected circumstances could be on a mission, Gon’s thinking is straightforward and thus his solutions to problems are as well. He doesn’t always spend time thinking about the ands ifs or buts and just simply goes for it. Which can end up with him throwing himself in impossible-to-win situations. When him and Killua managed to escape from Nobunaga he comments that he legit wanted to fight him. Even though he would have very easily lost the fight and Killua himself even says this.

But, for every troupe that Gon follows traditionally, there is another that he completely breaks over his knee. For example the typical Shonen protagonists are often blind to things like dating or romance and are never usually shown doing such, at least not very effectively. However, Gon actually has quite a romantic side as he not only takes Palm out on a date, but plans out certain sights for her to see as well. Which ends up being quite effective.

Another is that Shonen’s don’t usually pay a lot of attention to smaller details. And while this is definitely true for Gon in a lot of areas, he still has a surprisingly sharp eye for even the most minor of details. He can tell Kiriko’s apart by appearance and voice for example, so it can be assumed it would be hard to fool him with a disguise or a minor change in appearance.

And lastly (which is the biggest one) he is not afraid to kill. But not in the normal Shonen way which involves the opponent being evaporated by an attack. The way Gon has killed has actually been quite gruesome. One enemy he has crushed to death and another he has continued to thrash even after the body was mutilated. And on that same note there has also been a time where he has had to stand by and watch innocents die (though reluctantly). And near the ending of the Chimera Ant arc he didn’t show many signs of caring whether or not Komugi would be healed as he cared more about his revenge with Pitou than her life. Of course, after Killua talks him down he relaxes more and allows the Chimera to heal her fully.

The basics of Gon’s personality is that he is a simple-- maybe even somewhat naive-- kid who wants the best for his friends, but mainly wants to be able to find his Dad. Unlike most kids who might have gotten mad at their Father for leaving and picking their dreams and ambitions over them, he sees it differently. He thinks that being a Hunter must have been such a glamorous and amazing career that his Dad chose picking that over raising him to be a worthwhile option. When, in truth, the reasons are likely much deeper than that. His relationship with his family and friends play a very major part in his ambitions and motivations, and a big reason as to why Gon likely wants to become strong is he doesn’t believe he will be able to protect those he cares about or meet his Dad without increasing his ability. In fact, his strength has been seen increasing drastically whenever a friend or loved one is involved.

Abilities/Powers:

Physically:

A lot of Gon’s basic abilities lie in his physical prowess. In fact he has no real major weaknesses in this area, especially for someone as young as he is. Any weaknesses he may have comes from the fact that other people are simply more skilled than he is.

Strength

Strength wise Gon probably isn’t as strong as Leorio and is obviously not as strong as Killua, but he is no slouch either. He can throw around large fighters with ease with just a push of his hands as well as break things like rock and stone with just a punch or kick. Gon has even lifted a tree and swung it with such force that the gust of it alone is enough to send a Chimera ant slamming into a solid rock wall. He has even defeated Nobunaga and Shizuku in arm wrestling (Although the former wasn’t using her left hand, and the latter seemed too shocked by his sudden burst of anger to respond correctly.)

His legs are strong enough that it allows him to jump high distances with ease.

Speed

Gon is rather speedy and can move fast enough to create brief afterimages of himself. As long as no Nen is involved he can even keep up with Killua and is fast enough to just barely keep up with Hisoka. He can also go from zero to full speed in nearly an instant, and can disappear from direct sight with only a half second or so opening.

Like his speed his reflexes are also top notch and is above that of what any ordinary human is capable of.

Endurance

. His stamina alone is ridiculous as he runs over 50 miles straight in the beginning of the series without showing any signs of fatigue or slowing down (Well before he went through any training at all like later on in the series). He can fight for prolonged periods of time and use insane speeds without getting tired quickly. Even with the use of Nen he can fight for around thirty minutes without needing much of a break (Which is ten times the length of a normal professional boxing match). Without Nen the length of that could very likely double or perhaps even triple depending on circumstances

Mentally:

Tracking:

Gon is able to track and follow things much more accurately than any regular human can. His eyesight is good enough to the point where he can follow a vague figure in near complete darkness without losing sight of them. His sense of smell is comparable to a dog’s in some areas, and he can even smell when a terrible storm is approaching. And once he has spotted a target it is very hard to deceive him, even with near-identical copies. He can tell the slightest differences in facial features and voice with Kiriko even when Leorio and Kurapika couldn’t see/hear the difference between the two at all.

Insane Pain Tolerance

His mental fortitude is insane and he can keep fighting efficiently after having his hand blood completely off and the other horribly injured. Later in canon he has had his arm cut off and barely even reacts or shows any direct signs of pain. During the first arc he resisted torture from Hanzo and refused to quit even after receiving multiple blows as well as having his arm broken.

Nen:
In the HxH world Nen is basically the energy that resides in the human body. Comparable to say Ki in DBZ. By using Nen Gon is not only able to drastically increase his defensive and offensive capabilities, but he is also able to enhance items and weapons and use them as if they are en extension of his own body (He was able to dig through solid rock easily with a shovel for example). He can also use it to see things that would be otherwise hidden, slow down the aging process, and even seal his Nen in order to mask his presence from an enemy. There are other things that can be done with it too (more detailed explanations here).

Every person is born for a natural affinity to a certain kind of Nen and Gon was born an enhancer and thus can enhance his physical abilities without having to come up with anything creative to defeat an enemy..

Items/Weapons: All he will really be arriving with are the clothes on his back as he didn’t really have any necessary items on him at the time of his arrival.

Sample Entry:

[Gon accidentally activates the video feed as he’s fumbling with his phone, unknowingly. He might not be a tech wizard or anything, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out this phone is a much older one than the one he had. But for some reason there’s no pictures or text at all in it. He stares intently for a good moment, staring at the device before he finally realizes that it’s recording.]

...

Oh! [And he smiles sheepishly.]Sorry. I think I pushed the wrong button.

Uh, I found this phone when I woke up, but no one’s told me how to use it yet. I’m not very good at electronic things, but I was told that everyone has one. So does anyone know how to bring up the the numbers on the phone you dial with? [Known usually as a number pad but.] I’ve been trying to call my friends but all I see is pictures, and I don’t think their faces are on here...

[Which is quite the dilemma.]

Ah, I almost forgot! My name is Gon! Gon Freecss!

Sample Entry Two:

Gon decided that since he was going to be stuck here for a while he might as well explore his surroundings to see what he would find. His exploration lead him straight to the Subway Station Convenience Store, and although it was obviously a place that would have some food items inside, it was heavily protected and he couldn’t get in no matter what. WHY hadn’t someone tried to get in after all this time? Were they afraid of who was inside? At first Gon tries a subtle approach. He gives a few firm knocks and asks if he can come inside just to grab a few things nothing major. But he wanted to share what he could with the people in town. Obviously there was no answer but when he peeked past the barricades a little he saw movement. He couldn’t really catch what it was. It was more like a quick shadow or blur, but there was likely someone inside!

He gets a little irritated at this point and starts banging on the door, shouting and generally getting angry. He even goes as far as to do a punch against the door, and then a Nen-induced punch. And to his surprise... The barricades didn’t even crack. In fact they weren’t affected at all. He could finally see why no one had tried to get into this place. Looking more determined than ever he takes a step back and balls his right hand into a fist, covering it with his left.

A burst of what appears to be fire erupts over both hands, the flame growing larger steadily. “First comes rock...” He mutters this lowly under his rbeath. Normally it wouldn’t take a Jajanken to break down a door but obviously there was something special about these blockades. Maybe they were infused with Nen?

Regardless, after his right fist is coated in energy he swings it as hard as he can at the door screaming “JANKEN: GUU!!” Now what he expected to happen was the door and barricades to go flying and for him to heroically reveal whatever smarmy person who was inside hiding food. But things don’t quite go that route. Instead the attack does nothing and he actually finds himself holding the bruised fist soon after and yelling in pain after a brief pause. “....THAT HURTS!!”

Rachnera Arachnera | Monster Musume | Not reserved

[personal profile] tehkev 2013-11-22 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: Rachnera is just a normal girl.

Who happens to be half spider. Which is to say, not normal at all.

Shockingly enough this is a bit of a problem for her. As most would expect, being half spider is not the cutest of things to be. In fact it's a bit of a issue she's sensitive about. While quite confident in her looks up top, the spider business all but instills terror in everybody who lays eyes on her. As evidenced by the fact the people who first took her in were so uncomfortable about having an Arachne living with them they illegally sold her to someone super sketchy. Which lead to some rather large trust issues regarding humans. As in she doesn't trust any of them aside from the the main character. Even then, she doesn't fully trust him.

Still! She's not some crazy spider who wants to kill all humans or anything of the sort. She simply doesn't trust them and is more than happy to play up how scary she is to scare the piss out of any who she can tell are uncomfortable with her. Yet those who are uncomfortable around her, she would more or less categorize in two areas. Those who she flat out doesn't like and would threaten with complete seriousness, and those she would shrug her shoulders at and laugh it off after said threats. Of course her threats aren't deadly. It's more along the lines of putting to use her appearance to make them pass out or wrapping them up in her silk to 'punish' them. And punishment is often in a very bondage type manner, as she's quite talented as spinning it in such a way that it looks like something out of a BDSM film. Still, while she might punish and have trust issues... she does hold honesty in high regards. Obviously she's honest with herself about her appearance and how most humans view her, so she wants those around her to do the same. Be it negative it or not, she would definitely regard those who lie to her face about being okay with her looks or personality to be someone she can't stand.

Yet even with her distaste for humans, she's not all bad. If she warms up to someone she's quite friendly. Overly so if they charm her and happen to be male, considering how aggressive and upfront she is about getting what she wants. She's a tremendous tease, not at all shy about using her body to entice all sorts of reactions from the lead, even before she was attempting to woo him. Yet when it comes to other (monster)girls, she's excellent at riling them up, knowing just what buttons to push to make them rage or fume. When it comes down to it, she just likes toying with others in a playful or menacing way. Clearly a sadist.

In what would likely be a surprise to those who get a look at her, she's also quite good with children. As proven immediately when the younger monstergirls in the house warm up to her quickly (innocence!!) and she looks after them while the others go out later on. Yeah, this spider makes quite the good big sister figure. In quite a variety of ways when it comes to 'big'.

Abilities/Powers:
+ Arachne physiology: She's half spider, yo. Her bottom half, from around the waist down is a giant spider. Made of light yet extremely tough exoskeleton. Her arms are covered in this as well, from the upper arm downward. She also can see very well in the dark, and is even able to see ultraviolet light.

+ Agility & Strength: Much like that famous superhero named after a spider, Rachnera possesses speed and strength far above a human. Speed enough to all but instantly scale a tall wall with her legs, or the kind of strength needed to easily lift up a full grown man while she does said scaling. Her speed is definitely more impressive than her strength, however. As she's fast enough to (narrowly) dodge a bullet from range. That, however, might be far more thanks to her reflexes than just her speed. Sadly not a spider sense.

+ Tactical Sneaking Skills: Despite her size, Rachnera is quite talented at going unnoticed until she wants to be. Capable of kidnapping someone in the middle of the day without anyone noticing her, or sneaking through a crowded city using roofs and buildings. Naturally, she can also climb on ceilings and walls.

+ Spider Silk: Rachnera is capable of making silk, of course. Which when threaded up enough is about five times the strength of steel. Naturally, she's very talented with her own silk, even capable of tying up others in an instant with it. It's quite a talent to be able to get it from her spinneret to her hands as fast as she does. Possibly because she can produce it from her hands as well, yet it's not entirely clear. She can even use it to listen in on others from far away via the vibrations it makes when she has one end of a strand connected to a window or door. She even made all her own clothes using her own silk. It's useful stuff!!

Items/Weapons: Naught but her clothes.

Sample Entry:

*Hello there Haven, there is a lovely lady greeting you today. A lady with six solid red eyes and a fanged smile.*

My, they certainly are generous in giving out cellphones to everyone, aren't they? It feels like there's a surge in my popularity for suddenly having so many people whom I can call.

*Casting a glance off camera as some poor soul shrieks in fear...*

. . . on the other hand, numbers alone don't mean popularity.

Now, Haven, was it? I hardly can imagine I'll need to ask for the trust situation in this type of place... I'm sure you all trust each other a great deal, or are constantly suspicious of one another... Where do you fall? I would be very interested in the answer to that question.

*Letting out a sigh, the view behind her begins to change as she begins to go on the move. Which cues a good few more startled to terrified noises from off camera.*

Are you all not accustomed to monsters here? When I first woke up, kidnapped of all things, I found it quite difficult to believe there was the possibility the people here would find me so shocking... If they're capable of bringing me to such a place, I surely can't be the first. Yet even my roommates found my presence...

*a huff.* Nevermind. I'm sure the lot of you will see soon enough. Given the screams and shouts I've been greeted with thus far, it's only a matter of time before I'm going to--

. . . oh my. These stairs are a little small, aren't they? It was difficult enough fitting out the door... You may all wish to stay off the staircase for the next few minutes. I don't want one of you to panic further or have a heart attack when you see me and break your neck. While it might prove amusing later on, at the moment I'll just feel guilty for it being on the stairs of all things. *click.*

Sample Entry Two:

What a troublesome place.

It had been a few days now, yet it was still extremely bothersome. The effort she had to put forth to go to and from her room, on the top floor was such a hassle. Not only was the door to the apartment too small, the apartment itself was barely tall enough for her to stand upright in. Not to mention the way her roommates all looked at her. They might have acted polite eventually... aside from that one who was clearly disgusted by her. Yet those polite few were clearly forcing it. Yet it was far from insulting, as she was used to such looks. Hated them, yet used to them.

Which is why she felt it was within her rights to make her apartment far more easily accessible.

The sound of bars being torn clean off the window wasn't hard to miss, honestly. Nor was the sound of her prying off parts of the wall to make said window more appropriate for her. There was a idle hum as she pondered what to do with the bars, before tossing them into the apartment and settling herself down. 'Down' being generous, given she was still completely upright, her legs only bent slightly to make it easier to move about the inside.

At the very least, the work she set about doing was done in mere moments. Considering she had even been polite enough to wait until all of her roommates were gone for this renovation, they should thank her! The addition of a nice wide angle view of the ruined city would surely be a welcome addition. Besides, it wasn't as if a window this high up would protect them from anything that wanted to get in. She had even been generous enough to weave a web around the opening in case anything did try to get in.

Yes, her generosity and property damage today could not be matched.

Looking quite pleased with herself regarding the improvements to her quality of life... she let out a small huff of satisfaction, before scuttling on over to her 'bed'... a large hammock she made herself shortly after arriving. As if she could sleep in a bed. So rude, Haven. Before flopping into it and letting her arms and legs dangle loosely.

Ah. She could hear someone running. The first one to investigate her change to the apartment, no doubt.

No big deal. It's not like she cared if her roommates objected. This was all for the sake of her own convenience. They should have asked Haven to make the apartment more spider friendly if they didn't want this to happen.

Character Name: Sssusssan
Background/History:
World History
Perhaps this world could have been our Earth, where apes evolved into people, only evolution made a few extra changes in direction along the way. Although humans do exist, and much in the same sort of environments and with much the same technological advancements as exist now, they're not alone among the 'intelligent' species - there are two others. Humans are not aware of these extra two species and, for all intents and purposes, humans exist exactly as they do in the year 2013 on Earth.

The first of these, the ones not really relevant to this character, are the human-bird hybrids. These creatures call themselves, as a species, Ibon, although they have a lot of sub-species of this. They can range in size from as tiny as a finch to as large as an ostrich. The Ibon tend to secrete themselves away from the rest of the world on inaccessible cliffsides, high mountaintops, or in dense jungle. They run as a democratic society, electing twelve Ibon to their High Council. Each must be of a different subspecies (for example, a Pigeon hybrid and an Eagle hybrid), and must be from different geographical backgrounds in order to make sure that the interests of all Ibon are taken into consideration. Their capital city is located roughly a hundred feet below the summit of Mt. Everest, although they have another large population in the Amazon Rainforest.

The second of these, the ones very relevant to this character, are the human-snake hybrids. Again, although there are many sub-species, the collective name for them is a Nāga. Unlike the Ibon, they are ruled by a monarchy who have absolute power, and distinct divides between classes - with a great number of lower and middle class, and only a small number of upper class. The Nāga who evolved from the King Cobra have long distinctive ears, which are the remnants of their hoods. They are the royal family, and hold their palaces in the East of India.

Nāga can vary in length between the grass-snake/human hybrid, which will only ever reach a maximum of thirty centimetres long/tall in its adult life. To the boas, which can reach colossal lengths/heights of up to thirty feet. The King Cobra family can reach between six and eighteen feet once fully grown. Society parallels the human world in some ways (Nāga have jobs, families, and even some very basic technology such as electricity), but starkly differs in other ways. For example, there is no taboo against incest or inbreeding. Indeed, that's how the King Cobras maintain the royal line. The Queen will lay between 20 and 40 eggs, and the strongest male and female of the children will become the next King and Queen and mate to continue the line.

There have been many bloody wars between the Nāga and the Ibon, because they can be one another's natural predators (eagles eat snakes, snakes eat chicks). Most wars are fought covertly, using sneak attacks and guerilla tactics, as both species have a wish to remain hidden from the human world. Humans are greatly feared for their weapons, their cruelty, and their animal jails (or 'Zuws').

Personal History
Sssusssan was the 23rd egg hatched out of 37, and has always very much suffered from 'middle child' syndrome. Although the Nāga do not generally hiss when they speak, it is tradition for all children to be named using "the royal hiss", or an elongation of the 'S' sound. This has been passed down through the royal line for generations, and it is now a crime punishable by death for anyone not of royal blood to use the elongated 'S' in their name.

Her life has been very standard so far (albeit privileged). She spent her early years in the Royal Nurseries, her brothers and sisters her constant companions, and only seeing her parents (Sssteven and Lisssa) on special occasions and for formal events. She was never babied as the younger ones were, or had the pressure put on her that the older children did. Sometimes this made her feel left out and ignored, but she mostly used it to her advantage to get away with things that the more closely scrutinised children couldn't do.

She quickly realized that she had no desire to become the next Queen. Her forte wasn't in strength, it was in knowledge. Shy by nature, she buried herself in the Royal Libraries when she was old enough to leave the nurseries, and dedicated herself to her lessons. However, her thirst for knowledge didn't just stop at book learning, she had a natural curiosity and a desire to find out about every mystery she came across. Unfortunately, this landed her in hot water more than once - such as the time she decided she simply had to find out how the sewer system worked, and almost got herself drowned.

Her two best friends are her brother (third oldest, Ossscar), and her personal servant, Jenny. At only eight years old, she's not really thought too much about her future other than her lack of desire to rule, but she is vaguely aware that she doesn't know where to fit into society yet. So far her life just consists of lessons, games, and more lessons. Not a bad life, really.

Personality: First and foremost, Sssusssan is a product of her society and upbringing. She has spent her whole life in the palace grounds around servants who obey her, soldiers who protect her, and commoners visiting who revere her as a member of the royal line. This has given her a deep seated conviction that, even though she has no desire to rule, she still has the right to it and it's only natural that others not in the royal line should bow to her decisions. Naturally, this has given her a stubborn streak and, as with any child who is rarely told no, she can be very immature when she doesn't get her own way. However, she's also had strict lessons (as have all the King Cobra children), and as such she's not just a pouty child if things don't go her way. She has been taught courtly manners, etiquette, and Machiavellian political manoeuvring. She is only eight, though, so she's by no means an expert at any of these things yet. But that doesn't mean she's not capable of putting on a smile and being as graciously regal as is expected of her.

Another result of living her whole life in the palace grounds, is that she is both sheltered and naive about a lot of things most other Nāga would take for granted. She's never had to buy her own food, wash her own clothes, or even dress herself without her maid, and so she's ignorant at how to do all of them. She isn't fully aware of the conditions of the lower classes, as she is not yet old enough to have taken those lessons, and so she sometimes feels that the commoners who petition her parents for more land or less taxes are whining over nothing. She is also subject to the prejudices of her people, and has not yet got old enough to really question that they're anything other than total truth. She hates the Ibon with her whole heart, even though she's never met one, and she fears humans as much as a human child might fear the boogeyman.

She is quite naturally shy, although she is capable of overcoming that if she absolutely has to (her lessons in public speaking as a royal, for example), she just prefers not to be the centre of attention if possible. She has never enjoyed pushing herself forward over her siblings and it was this, as much as anything else, that made her decide she didn't want to try and gain the throne when she grew up. She prefers to hover in the background where she can do her own thing, forgotten by everyone else who are focused on the loud and pushy ones. She uses this to her advantage a lot, letting the servants and her parents be occupied with her siblings who are trying to prove themselves, so she can slip out to pursue her own interests.

Which leads me onto her curiosity. She has always had a ravenous appetite for knowledge, and it frustrates her when she can't find the answer to something. If she becomes enthralled with a question or a subject, she can obsess over it for weeks at a time until she's gathered all the information on it that she can - even if that involves things that might be potentially dangerous. When she does dangerous things, it's not that she's particularly fearless or brave, it's that she's never had to think about her own safety. She has always had soldiers and bodyguards to protect her, as well as the best doctors if she should get injured or ill, and so it just doesn't really occur to her that she might one day get in real trouble.

Although she does use being ignored to her advantage, as I've mentioned above, she does still feel the downsides to that sometimes. Like any other young child, she craves love and companionship, and she is sometimes jealous of the attention heaped on the siblings that are trying to get stronger for potential rule, even though that's not the path she wants for herself. She can feel very isolated, she is closeted in the palace grounds and her parents rarely see their children, so her chances of building other relationships are slim. This means that the two close relationships she has, with her third oldest brother and personal servant, are incredibly precious to her. Once she has given someone her loyalty and friendship, she will be loyal until the end and warm and friendly.

Sssusssan is just a child, so she is still struggling to find her place in the world. She's torn between her duty and the sense of self that her situation has given her, and the deep desire to have friends, affection, and a freedom to pursue everything she's curious about in the world.

Abilities/Powers: The main weapons at her disposal, are her fangs and her venom. She can spit her venom with incredible accuracy at a distance of up to ten feet, and it's strong enough to kill a full grown bull elephant very quickly. Other advantages of her species include an extremely strong tail, capable of crushing. Dexterity, as the tail can be used as another limb, and the speed for which cobras (not just King Cobras) are noted for. She only eats meat (preferably still alive when she eats it), but she only needs to eat once every two weeks.

Weaknesses would include her size - she's nowhere near full grown and is only about four feet long/tall, and as such her tail is still only in child-levels of strength. She is also cold blooded, and as such won't do well in cold temperatures for long.

Items/Weapons: One satchel. One cage with one live rat inside (for food).

Sample Entry: [It had taken a few weeks for Sssusssan to get brave enough to use this weird device, especially when she new the majority of creatures who would be hearing her would be humans, but she felt as though she had no choice any more.]

Nobody has oiled my tail in five weeks and I need to shed soon, so I require a volunteer.

[Her voice was a blend of imperious order and frightened plea.]

You must be gentle and capable. Come at once.

Sample Entry Two: The first thing which was immediately noticeable was the cold. It had never been this cold at her home, not even in the shaded grounds by the pools, and it made her shiver all over. She didn't understand how the other prisoners here coped for so long, let alone how some of them wandered around as if they were enjoying the heat of a summer's day.

Unable to bear it any longer, she had risked coming out of her temporary hiding space (under the bed) and braved possibly running into the humans in order to leave the apartments. Such a filthy place, and what idiotic person thought putting these "stairs" in place was a good idea? By the time she got to the bottom of them, her tail felt bruised in six different places and she was feeling grumpy - but she pushed down the feeling, she didn't have time to indulge in it when she was on a mission.

But after being outside for almost half an hour, she had to conclude her mission was a failure. She had had enough! Kidnapped, trapped in a smelly, dirty building with humans, forced to endure stairs, and now there wasn't even a sunstone to bask on?! She slumped down where she was and just started to cry... it just wasn't fair.

[personal profile] thehedgehogsdilemma 2013-11-22 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality: The death of his mother and the abandonment by his father, not too long after losing his mother, resulted in Shinji Ikari growing up to have very low expectations and self-worth; a boy with terrible self-esteem since childhood. Shinji Ikari is boy who grew up just living through day-to-day and doing what was expected of him with no objections from him. He went to school, played the cello often at the request of his teacher that he grew up living with after his father walked out of his life. (Fast forward to when he's 14 years old and meets Gendo Ikari again; the reunion was a far dry from heart-warming. To this day, he does not have a good relationship with his father.)

At an arms-length-distance, Shinji Ikari is an average, agreeable boy who is a bit quiet and has a few problems with his self-esteem. And he is perhaps a bit awkward around women (especially if they come onto him. But from what we gathered with the infamous encounter with Kaji in 2.22, ANYONE can fluster him if they come on strong.), and not the most assertive person you'll meet.

While he sometimes bickers with Asuka Soryu, another fellow Eva pilot and chosen child, Shinji is still a passive person and is the one who usually attempts to pacify her abrasive behavior in any way he is able to. So it's not that Shinji doesn't have a backbone, it's just that he doesn't always have the energy to care enough to put up a fight. So he usually thinks it's just easier to let people have it their way, rather than fight it. (and more inclined to pick his battles.)

In the beginning of the series, Shinji feels as if he had no choice but to pilot the eva, that this was a thing that Shinji had no say in. However, Shinji does become a little more willing of piloting the Eva when he gets praised by his father after a mission. Just hearing a "Good job" from his father left Shinji taken aback, and made him finally think of his reason of piloting Eva after a while answering "I don't know what my reason is" when he was asked before. He is no hero, and even he had a better attitude, Shinji wouldn't want to be, let alone think of himself as a hero. As odd as it sounds, he pilots the Eva for the praise and approval of others, including his father, who he still had some disdain towards; which is a total contrast to Asuka's reasons for piloting Eva which was "to be the best.". He feels his existence has some worth when he pilots the Eva.

Shinji is a boy who wants to be liked and wants your approval, another reason why he isn't a confrontational person. Growing up, his teacher had him take up playing the cello. Shinji kept playing it and actually became quite skilled at it, as Asuka commented when she heard him play. When she asks "Why do you keep playing?" he answers "Because no one told me to stop."

When it comes to getting emotionally close to Shinji or wanting to make a bond with him... Well. There is an expression called "The Hedgehogs's Dilemma" that describes one of Shinji's downfalls. It is when:
(1) The closer two beings come to one another in a relationship, the more likely it might be for them to inflict psychological pain on each other
(2) Yet if they remain apart, they each might feel the roughly-equivalent pain of loneliness.

It is the very explanation of why Shinji is quite the introvert who rarely makes friends at school and is rather content with just listening to his SDAT player (his cassette player) than talk to other classmates. Only Toji and Kensuke were the ones who got through to Shinji and were his only friends at school. When he is with them, he acts and behaves like the 14 year old boy he actually is, and not just an Eva pilot with responsibilities and burdens. Thus, this proves that Shinji is able to make friends, he just doesn't always take initiative to reach to others.

He'd rather keep you at an arms-length distance, if he is able to. Get any closer or cross that boundary and he will try to close in on himself, emotionally.

He rarely reaches out to others because he believes it will only hurt him in the end. And on the flip side of that same coin, he hates and fears being alone and that hurts him just as much, if not more. From what we gather from the conversation that he had with Kaworu Nagisa, the only person Shinji was able to confide in, is that while Shinji is cautious of people around him, he does not hate anyone. (except his father, which he feel he is perfectly justified in doing so.)

In the "End of Evangelion", it is shown that while Shinji has been hurt and betrayed in his lifetime, he still values his individuality and would rather still exist physically than live a life in Instrumentality where the souls of all beings were merged into one huge sea of LCL. He realized that even there is pain/will be pain in his lifetime, there is still the happiness from being cared about and caring about another individual; Shinji got to experience what that is like with the help of Kaworu Nagisa, no matter how short-lived that bond was.

This was why when the Third Impact happened, the Apocalypse of their world, he rejected Instrumentality, in the end. So, all that said, Shinji is not all hopeless when it comes to people. Shinji has the potential to go in a better direction. Towards the end of the series, he starts to think in a better direction than he did in the beginning despite needing a little work on self-esteem. (Going from "I am worthless/useless" to "Yes, I'm a coward, and I am only me.. but I am worth living here!") As hopeless as he made himself and his life out to be, and as much as he dislikes himself, somewhere in his heart, Shinji Ikari has the will to live and wouldn't want to die.
