APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED! The next application opening date is Friday 16th January, 7pm EST. The next application processing date is Friday 23rd January, 7pm EST.
IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE
We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.
In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.
You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.
Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.
If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.
Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.
We now have a test drive community at haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.
While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.
Kouha Ren is a brat. With an attention span proportional to his height and an even lesser concern for personal space, he acts more like a large child than a noble heir and representative of the world's (arguably) strongest empire.
Being a wealthy country's third prince means he's pretty damn spoiled, and generally gets what he wants when he wants it. If he doesn't? He'll either complain or slap the person responsible, depending on who they are. Regardless of whether it's a long carriage ride or a ceremony which determines the fate of the entire empire: if he's bored or displeased, he'll make sure people know. Self-restraint isn't really part of his dictionary; neither (in most cases) is respect, with typical forms of addressing others including but not limited to "brat" and "idiot". Combining those insults with his frequent out-of-turn exclamations and informal manner of speaking just makes it all the more obvious that Kouha gives no shits about etiquette. And no, not even djinn are exempt from this behavior.
Pampered as he is, it's only natural that he'd also be vain. Incredibly so. He'll choose a ten-day carriage ride over the much shorter and safer magic carpet route for the sole purpose of protecting his looks (and then proceed to whine about the length of the journey). With that in mind, you'd think that he'd like to keep himself as clean as possible, right?
Um, nope.
See, when children really don't get what they want, they tend to throw tantrums. Kouha is no exception; though his tantrums happen to involve less scream-crying and more gleeful exhilaration as he goes around slicing through various life forms with a kitchen knife several times his height. A large toy for a large child, you could say.
Kouha enjoys killing. He enjoys blood. He enjoys laughing as his victims flail in panic. He'll fool around with said victims just to make them panic more before he casually sends their bloodied remnants to kingdom come.
But he won't do so indiscriminately. Don't get me wrong. He's a gore-loving maniac whichever way you look at it. But more often than not, his killing sprees are provoked by hazards either to himself or his allies. (Whether or not being attacked by a weak band of thieves justifies rearranging the landscape is a different matter.)
And as juvenile as he usually appears, he does know when to get serious. He's not the supreme commander of a vanguard for nothing, and when his men's lives are really and truly in danger, he'll give his all to protect them — to the extent where he'll even forgo precious attacking time to shield them. With an offensive weapon.
I wouldn't call it selflessness. Not entirely. First and foremost, despite all his quirks, Kouha is loyal to the Kou Empire. It's his duty to lead his men to success. That being said... not only does he know the names of many, possibly all, of his subordinates (and there are hundreds of them) but he also personally recruited every single one. And they worship him for it.
They're the types of people who should have had no place in society: failed experiments, half-breeds, exiles — the most unlikely candidates to be welcomed into a prince's home. Yet they were the ones Kouha chose to gather, telling them to know no shame and fight with their heads held high. It's not something he'd admit aloud, but those people were possibly the ones Kouha came closest to understanding. Born to a mother who fell into the spurned condition of insanity, he didn't have anyone to turn to as a child — but instead of dwelling on that, he turned to eccentric, twisted things. Still, his elder brothers (with a presumably sane mother) took care of him, and that's his reasoning for in turn taking care of others that live in shadow. To them, he's their king. That's why his djinn chose him, rather than his brother Kouen, who lived in the "light", to be her master. Kouha has yet to realize this.
Kouen is the one person Kouha respects. Though that's an understatement; you'd be better off calling it a brother complex. There are just hints to start with: Kouha's blind faith in Kouen becoming emperor, his indignation when things turn out otherwise, his claim that Magnostadt belongs to Kouen... and then it becomes painfully clear that Kouha feels vastly inferior to his eldest brother. Kouen's appearance on Kouha's battlefield — one which sees him bruised, bloodied and cradling a broken arm — has the latter reduced to a stuttering mess. Yes, Kouha Ren begs and apologizes in the same sentence. Neither of which has he done (sincerely) before onscreen.
Oh, and don't treat him like a damsel that needs saving, especially in front of his brother. Not only will his pride be in shreds, he'll also resent your guts for it. Yes, he does have pride. He knows he's ridiculously strong. Because of that, he's not used to losing, which is apparent from how he's the first to start questioning his team's chances while battling the medium in Magnostadt. To be fair, that thing is a god tier overpowered jerk.
Yet in spite of that, no matter how invincible you are — if you threaten the life of his family, Kouha will charge in with an incredibly shounen angry yell and (attempt to) destroy you. It's his way of showing that he cares.
Abilities/Powers:
As a dungeon capturer, Kouha possesses a metal vessel in the shape of a sword called Nyoi Rentou (Refined Blade At Will). A metal vessel is an object that contains a djinn, a spiritual being which feeds on the user's magoi, essentially one's life force, to let them perform magic of a certain affinity. Kouha's djinn, Leraje, grants him strength magic, which is shown in his sword's ability to seemingly cut through anything.
Kouha can change his sword's size at will. When not in combat, it stays around a meter long to make it easier to carry, but is shown to be able to grow 20-30 times larger, with the blade big enough to shield an army of hundreds of men. However, he usually only enlarges it at the precise moment he needs it, since enlarging it too early makes it difficult and heavy to carry around. Swinging it at the ground can create an earthquake with relative ease, not to mention leaving a giant ravine in its wake.
¤ Djinn Equip: Through his metal vessel, Kouha can also compress Leraje's powers into his own body and "become one" with her. This grants him access to a greater tier of strength magic. In this form, he takes on some of Leraje's physical characteristics including wings (which enable him to fly), armor, a third eye and changed hair color/length. His sword changes shape to become a scythe one one side and a hammer on another.
¤ Extreme Magic: aka Lelazzo Madraga (Refined Hammer At Will). This is Kouha's most powerful attack. While in full djinn equip, he can hit his target with the hammer side of his weapon and disintegrate everything its blast touches.
¤ Djinn Weapon Equip: Since a full djinn equip exhausts magoi very quickly, he can opt to just perform a less powerful weapon equip to conserve it. A weapon equip uses the same principle as a full djinn equip, with the compression of power being focused solely on the weapon instead of the whole body.
Seeing as Kouha's metal vessel uses his djinn's magical power rather than his own, without Nyoi Rentou he's at quite a large loss. However, he's a skilled swordsman in his own right, so as long as he has some form of long weapon at his disposal, he won't be rendered completely helpless.
It's not like Kouha Ren to completely miss a target. Sure, he's misjudged when to enlarge his sword from time to time, but when he actually wants to hit something, he hits it.
Today he's missed several times, and he's barely even touched his metal vessel.
"Oiiii~~~ ... Listen to me, you shithead!!"
Swing. Miss.
...
"FOR FUCK'S SAAAAKE!!"
And here he goes, launching himself forward in a frenzy of swinging arms, only to end up stumbling through the strange man, narrowly missing a headfirst collision with the tree behind.
Violence hadn't been his first option. To start with, he'd generously greeted the weirdly-dressed, semi-fucking-seethrough family in front of him with a cheerful call of "Oi, maggots!" — only to be completely ignored. Peeved at he was, he'd graciously given them three more seconds to respond before being forced to resort to slapping the father.
Except his palm had come into contact with thin air, and failing to hit anything even remotely tangible — and after ten or so attempts involving shots at both the mother and child, he'd moved onto the next idly chattering group of idiots. (Not giving up, obviously. Just rethinking his strategy.)
Tree guy here was his fifth target.
Kouha's pretty damn pissed.
Out comes the sword, slashing the air wildly (though really, it's not wild at all — he's aiming for limbs, not heads, he just wants to scare them) as he yells to the heavens (or ceiling, blah blah blah this place is stupid):
"I don't care if you morons are ghosts or djinn babies or whatever, DON'T TALK TO EACH OTHER WHILE IGNORING ME!!!"
Character Name: Merrill Canon: Dragon Age II Canon Point: Between Act 2 and Act 3 Background/History: The Dragon Age storyline, Merrill's, and a summary of the game events/choices for Merrill!
Personality: Strictly speaking, Merrill is one of the kindest people you could ever meet. She's optimistic, cheerful, giving and truly just a kind-hearted person. She loves being around people and loves learning new things, taking in everything with a wide-eyed sort of wonder. She's a perfectly agreeable young woman, and one who has purpose and devotion to her cause.
The problem is, she's a blood mage.
Before we delve more into what defines Merrill, it's important to define her culture, because it shapes her, of course, but it's also her largest motivating factor. Merrill is Dalish, elves that live away from humans and other races and largely govern themselves in a clan system. Each clan is headed by a Keeper, which a position of leadership, but also like a head of a family and a historian. The Keeper works for the good of the clan and is the one charged with preserving the history of their race that's already known, and if possible, recovering things that were lost in the age of the Tevinters. As Merrill is the next in line to become the Keeper of her clan, she only wishes to do the best in this role that she can, but it sends her down a dangerous path.
To restore an ancient artifact of her people, Merrill commits a great taboo and becomes a blood mage. Blood mages are highly feared, since they are the most likely to be possessed by demons and become dangerous Abominations or worse. Though Merrill truly had the best intentions, since she only wanted to help her people and restore some of their former prosperity, the means that she goes through to do it alienates her from her clan, to the point that she's effectively banished and works with Hawke in the subsequent years.
The events shape Merrill and act as her primary motivating factors, yet she's hardly the person you'd expect from these events alone. Merrill has a kind and bubbly personality. She's very deeply empathetic and is usually one of the first party members to ask about another's well-being. She cares very deeply for those around her, and she's the sort of person to open her heart very quickly. She sees the best in people and loves them for it, and even to those that are very harsh to her, her kindness and concern barely falters at all, since she simply wants those around her to be happy.
But this is also her biggest flaw. Her naive, trusting nature makes her easily fooled and used, but she rejects the idea that she can't handle herself quite vehemently. Other party members often express their concerns for Merrill's safety, whether it's with her blood magic from Anders or simply walking through dark, seedy alleys alone from Varric. Despite being an adult woman, Merrill is very unwise to the world, since she's lived in isolation with her clan until she came to Kirkwall with Hawke. She does things for others and rarely for herself, so she's easily taken advantage of, which is why many people worry so much for her using blood magic. They fear that Merrill's innate thinking that people have the best intentions first will ruin her, since she's blinded from seeing the bad in others. And unfortunately, with how her quest concludes, this is true.
Merrill is also not very confident in herself. She works tirelessly and will give someone the clothes off her back, but it's almost like she's trying to make up for some deficit she hinds in herself. She doesn't feel like she's a very strong or smart person, and these are qualities she deeply admires in others. Merrill says that she wishes she was more like Isabela or a female Hawke, since they both are witty, strong, and don't need to rely on others like Merrill often finds she has to. She admires others greatly and sees the best of them, but she has difficulty seeing the good qualities in herself, which leads to a lack of self-confidence and a lot of doubt in herself.
She also doesn't understand nuance, and though she's very intelligent and studious, sarcasm or dirty jokes often fly right over her head. By her canon point, she's at least gotten to the point where she can identify them, but she usually has to make sure, as in "that was sarcasm, right?" She's lived a sheltered and isolated life, so there are many things she simply doesn't understand about living in the city, since she's lived amongst nature up until that point, but Merrill takes it all in with a smile. She sees it as an opportunity to learn, which is probably why so many party members still care for her so deeply in the face of her glaring, dangerous naivete. She's very innocent, when it comes down to it, simply wanting the best for others at any cost to herself.
Though, it's also worth noting that she's also a bit... awkward, to put it lightly. Maybe it's because of how she's learning about people or maybe it's just her personality, but Merrill has a tendency to say strange things at times. She asks a pirate if she has a parrot, asks dwarves if they frolic like elves do, or assigns personalities to inanimate objects. She's a bit socially awkward and will sometimes ruin plans because it flies over her head too, such as when Hawke tries to district some thugs with a made-up fire, Merrill essentially says to Hawke "but there was no fire." She's honest, not brutally so, since there's no a mean bone in her body, but she has a tendency to say whatever is on her mind without thinking about it first. This will either lead to those strange expressions of what she's thinking or to an awkward, stuttering, rambling mess when she's stressed. She's not the best at social situations, but she hardly shies away from them, at least...
Overall, Merrill is a person who stubbornly refuses to acknowledge her own flaws. She's not a bad person for it, but she's blinded by her own hopes and ambition, and this has the potential to drive her and her people that she so desperately wishes to help into ruin. Merrill wants the best for everyone around her and wants to see only the very best in them, but the world simply isn't as good as she imagines it. She's a sweet, gentle young woman who has a big heart and easily makes friends. She's genuinely kind and caring, which also makes her a very good friend. But ultimately, Merrill truly needs good people to stand beside her as she learns about the world, because they're the ones that can look after her and make sure she doesn't get herself into trouble that she truly can't handle.
Abilities/Powers: They're listed in more detail here, but essentially, Merrill is a skilled magic-user that uses elemental spells, for the most part. The sort of gross stuff associated with blood magic like reanimating corpses are things she does not do. The blood magic essentially provides her additional power for her elemental spells. By cutting herself, she's able to power her spells through her HP/life energy, which I'll be treating along the lines of when she uses blood magic, she'll have to be careful to not bleed to death while she's using her spells.
Outside of combat abilities, it can be assumed that Merrill is able to use magic for basic tasks. What this can entail isn't very clearly stated, but she seemingly can't fix her leaky roof with magic, but she could learn spells to spice up her sex life, apparently. I'd say that complex physical tasks aren't possible with magic, but simpler ones are, and she can probably augment people's abilities in small ways. Items/Weapons:
1. Her armor (Silver-Threaded Dalish Embroidery) 2. Her staff (Hubris) 3. A ball of twine
[ The video starts with the sound of a lightly Welsh accented voice, but there's really nothing shown on the video. It's just black, though the black sort of shifts on occasion. Clearly, this person just has her fingers over the camera and doesn't realize it's on. ]
Is that a light...? What an interesting little thing you are! Does the blinking mean it's listening to me? I hope so. That nice man said that I could talk to people with it, so good. Um... I hadn't thought of what to say yet, though. I just thought I would fiddle around with it a bit first, to see what would happen, but, oh, I'm rambling, aren't I? I'm sorry.
Well, if you'll take a message to someone, I'd appreciate it very much. If you could take a message to Kirkwall and please tell Hawke that I appear to have been kidnapped, that would be wonderful. Oh, but make sure to tell her not to worry, since my kidnappers are very nice, at least. Or... They haven't tried to kill me or any of the other people kidnapped, so that's quite fine. Tell her not to worry, but if she could come help, I'd be grateful. Oh, and tell Varric that his ball of twine didn't quite work for this, before he makes fun of me for it. Yes, that's it. Thank you—oh, what were you called—Fone'e? Something like that. Yes, thank you, Fone'e.
[ The view finally shifts, showing her face finally as she smiles and patiently seems to wait for it to return her message... ]
Sample Entry Two: She didn't like to think about it, but when she did, Merrill would remember how alone she was. And in a place like this, it was hard not to, she quickly realized.
It was like being back in Kirkwall a few years ago, thrown back into a situation where she had to stand very much on her own. She didn't mind it, she would often think to herself, because it was very exciting, in some ways. There was the potential to learn so many things and see so much that this part was thrilling. Any time she went to a new place, often with Hawke, she would always marvel at some new thing it provided her. There was a lot to marvel over, after all, since both Kirkwall and this place—Haven, wasn't it—were so very different from the woods of Ferelden and the hills of Sundermount.
She walks along empty alleys with rubble piled up around her with a ball of twine slowly unwinding so that she can find her way back, just like Varric had taught her. But rather than striding through interesting alleyways with a curious smile like she had in Kirkwall, there's a melancholy, nervous expression on her face now. Because it was very different. Kirkwall had been quite scary in some ways, because Merrill had never lived without her kin, but Hawke had always been there as a truly wonderful friend, as had Isabela, Varric, and even grumpy, disapproving Anders. And all the rest. She could fear for what may come as she lived away from her clan, but she had precious friends to help her.
...She hates to think negatively. It's such a toxic thing, especially for her, because it just spirals down until it feels like she's caught in a pit. So she really tries not to. But here... Here, in Haven, all she has to help her is this little ball of twine.
"Oh, if only you could lead me back to Kirkwall..." she sighs out as she looks at the twine sadly before she grips it to her chest instead. She doesn't want to think this way. This was supposed to be something new and exciting too, and surely, surely she could make friends here. The people she'd met so far had been quite kind.
But still, she can't help but wish that Hawke would show up to make things right, like she always did.
Character Name: Mary Magdalene Canon: Chrono Crusade Canon Point: Manga Chapter 22 (When Azmaria is kidnapped by Aion and Joshua)
Background/History: It is unknown where Mary Magdalene was born. It can be assumed that she was either born in a place that was stricken by poverty, or she had no home and wandered the streets. She somehow survived until she was roughly nine or ten years old, but judging by the clothing at that time we can assume that her life was a difficult one. It was at this age that she was found by the Magdalene Order, an organization dedicated to killing demons through holy power. She was given her name, and it seems that she was named a living symbol of their order. Why was this?
The Magdalene Order could recognize her in ways that normal people could not. Mary had a special gift, the power of sight. She could see things-- visions of the future, past, and present from all over the world. These holy powers marked her as a sort of 'apostle' to the Magdalene Order. From this day forward they brought her to the cloister so that her powers could contribute to the good of the order. It can be assumed that her life with the order was not worth noting. It is where she learned and grew as a person... she read books, learned to dress well, and she spent her days writing down her visions into a giant book of prophecy. But, other than that, it seems that her time there was utterly unremarkable. She refers to it as a gilded cage, which implies that she could not leave it if she wished to, so it was also likely a very controlled environment.
But this all changed when a certain demon visited the Order. A demon, Chrono, arrived and demanded that Mary come with him. To his surprise, she told Chrono that she had been waiting for him, and that she was ready to escape this cage with him. As priests rushed into the room with the intention of stopping Chrono, Mary read the immediate future which allowed Chrono to escape the order without hurting anyone. Once she was in the 'possession' of Chrono and the sinners (a group of rogue demons) she was tasked with helping them locate the head of Pandemonium (mother of all demons). After she located a small plot of land where the head was, she was left with Chrono to regain her strength. The two talked, and Mary surprised Chrono again by teasing him, laughing with him, and offering to mend his clothes. She was a strange human-- she didn't even seem to care that he was a demon.
After the head was found, Mary was brought to Eden (the Sinner's floating fortress in the sky). There she easily became a part of their little family of misfits. With her easy charm, gentle demeanor, and unconditional acceptance all of the demons grew to care for her. Sadly, those happy days could not last. When the group was on the precipice of reconstruction Pandemonium, the head came to life and attacked the fortress. As the demons fought to destroy Pandemonium’s reanimated head, Mary joined in the fight with her limited offensive holy powers. However, by attracting the attention of Pandemonium, she was attacked mentally by the demon queen. The consequences of this moment were not readily apparent, but it was the beginning of the end for Mary.
In this attack, Pandemonium had entered Mary's mind. While Mary could resist temporarily, she would surely be overcome by the demon queen in time. Aion (leader of the Sinners) recognized this and realized that Mary must be killed before that could happen. Mary knew that this was about to occur, and she pulled Chrono aside before the order of her death was given.
It was here that she revealed to Chrono that she had always known that Chrono was the one who would kill her. When asked why she came with them so willingly if she knew this, she replied that she wanted to know Chrono before her death. After overhearing this conversation, Aion orders Chrono to do his duty and kill Mary. However, Chrono cannot do it and he pleads for Aion to reconsider. As Aion pushes Chrono aside, he says that he will kill her on his own. In an attempt to protect Mary, Chrono attacks Aion and in the resulting battle Aion pulls off Chrono's horns. Mary reaches for Chrono as he falls off the edge of Eden, and the two plummet down to Earth.
The two are saved by Mary's wings (it is implied that all Apostle's have wings, although they rarely reveal themselves), and when Chrono awakens he sees a crying Mary above him. Mary realizes at this moment that the future is opening in a way that she had not realized was possible, and for the first time she feels fear at the idea of her own death. In a vision, she understands that Pandemonium will overtake her eventually, and she learns of a way to save Chrono. She tells him to take a portion of blood, and with that the two from a contract. With this, Chrono can use Mary's life in place of the energy that would normally come from his horns. However, this contract comes at a price. Mary only has a limited amount of energy within her, and if Chrono was to use all of that she would die.
With this knowledge, the two travel across the land. While Mary rejects the idea, Chrono insists that they return to the Magdalene order. While it is very likely that Chrono will be killed for the crime of kidnapping Mary, the Magdalene order might know of a way to save Mary from Pandemonium. Weakened by the struggle against Pandemonium and the contract, Mary is unable to argue and concedes to the idea.
Sadly, they never make it to the order. Aion eventually tracked down the two of them, and in an effort to escape Chrono is gravely wounded. As the wound rapidly heals, the last of Mary's life is drained away and she dies in Chrono's arms.
And this is the end of Mary's life, but it is not the end of her memory. The last of her spirit dwells within a clock device necklace (the physical medium that represented the contract between her and Chrono). When this device was given to Rosette Christopher as she made a contract with Chrono years later, Mary watched Rosette's journey with the demon. Luckily, these adventures can be found on wikipedia.
Mary Magdalene | Chrono Crusade | Not Reserved (2/2)
Personality: In many ways, Mary seems quite perfect. She was declared a living saint by the order that adopted her, and while this is mostly due to her incredible powers it is also due to her personality. She is everything that a 'saintly' woman should be. She is kind to everyone that she meets, gentle but firm and graceful in her demeanor. She is easy to talk to, and it is easy to get along with her. After all, she is absolutely accepting of everything and everyone. No matter who you are, what you have done, or what is scary about you, she will treat you like any other person. She will offer unconditional kindness, and that is a difficult thing to fight against.
However, if you were to ask Mary, she would laugh off any accusations of 'perfection'. After all, she would ask how can a person be perfect if they aren't even real. With this, we reach the core of Mary. She admits to Chrono that she is 'empty', and this is due to her powers. People might see her incredible powers of foresight to be amazing, but she would consider it to be a curse. She spent the majority of her young life unable to control her powers. While other children were forming memories and experiencing things that would build their sense of self, Mary was experiencing the memories of others. She saw visions of death, destruction, happiness, sadness... visions from the future, present and past. All of these visions were just as 'real' to her as her surroundings. She tells Chrono that because of this, she grew up empty. When a glass is filled with so much water, how is there any room for its own contents?
This leads to the development of a woman who is a strange contradiction. She is adaptable because there are few things that she feels strongly about. She is unafraid because she knows exactly when and where she will die. She values others because she does not value herself. One might argue that she isn't truly living, she is simply going through the motions and trying to help as many people as she can before she eventually dies. Of course, this does not mean that every smile she ever gives is a lie, but it means that you should never take her statements at face value. There is always more going on under the surface than most would give her credit for.
Why do I feel the need to emphasize this? Because it would be unfair to Mary to say that everything about her is a lie and she is simply waiting for death while moping about. Mary is actually a very bright and energetic person. Perhaps it is because she lived such a controlled life with the Magdalene order, but it seems that while she was with the Sinners she was always eager to be doing something. She helped the resident scientist with her experiments and projects, she enjoyed cooking and cleaning for the others, and when she is with Chrono she goes from doing her own laundry to insisting that she do his as well. She is constantly helping others, and she does it in different ways for everyone. If there is someone who doesn't want her help, she insists and might even tease them until they allow her to help. On the other hand, if there is someone who will ask for help, Mary will do her best to prove herself a trustworthy person until they eventually ask for help.
She's able to do this by being very good at reading people. While Mary has little sense of understanding when it comes to herself, she gets other people. How could she not? She's spent her entire life seeing visions of people from every walk of life. She has seen people in all sorts of situations, both happy and horrific. Because of this, she is very good at reading other people and acting in the way that will be most effective at reaching them.
It is also worth noting that Mary is very playful. This goes hand in hand with her eager attitude when it comes to doing things. She tends to tease others if she's fond of them, and it's a tool that she can always turn to so that others will feel more comfortable around her. Because she has always known where and how she will die (and, here in Haven she will be acutely aware that she is returning to death) she is rarely frightened by intimidating people. She has no sense of pride that they can hurt, and she knows that physically any harm that is done doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. This means that teasing is always a valuable tool in her arsenal, especially against those who have never been teased before.
As you can see, Mary is a complex young woman. She's incredibly strong but she is also frail. She is kind and generous but she is also distant. She is constantly joyful but melancholy. Both sides of these contradictions are very much a part of her, which makes her a woman who is utterly human, but capable of doing immense good for the world.
Abilities/Powers: I will apologize in advance, because Mary's powers of foresight are vague as fuck. It's clear that they are incredibly powerful, but they also seem to be very situation specific.
At their core, her ability gives her the ability to see 'visions'. When another character attempts to describe her power, he says "From a faraway past to a far away, distant location-- to the words of the dead. The prophet, whose eyes can see everything... The foreseeing Holy Maiden". Of course, that is not particularly helpful when trying to estimate the limit of her power. After all, from her actions in the manga it is clear that she is not omniscient. All we can really do is break down examples of her power in canon, and attempt to guess her limits from that.
We know that she sees the memories of people from all across the world, from the present the past and the future. Sometimes she will see visions that occurred nearby (for example, when she was a child riding a carriage, she looked out the window and saw the dead bodies of soldiers from a war that took place decades ago) or faraway (she recounts seeing visions of soldiers drowning in fields of sand as they marched to battle, and the women who were later raped by the remaining soldiers when they were victorious). The problem with this aspect of her power is that it is incredibly vague concerning how much control she has over it. In some ways, it seems that she has no control. During a flashback where we see her as a child, it seems that the visions simply come upon her, like how a hallucination would descend upon a mentally unwell man except her hallucinations are real events from past/present/future. But, in other ways, she seems to have complete control (she looked five seconds into the future and saw exactly how a young priest would attack his opponent). I think the best way to define this power is that when she was younger and inexperienced, the visions would come upon her in a torrent and she had no control over them. Now, I would assume that she is able to block out visions that are unrelated to her, and only truly 'views' visions that are helpful. More than that, I would guess that she must have more control over visions that are related to the immediate present. For example, that would explain why she was able to read the moves of the fighting priest, but unable to pick out visions of the far future detailing the situations the led up to her death.
She also seems to have the ability of 'vision' in a physical sense. For example, when she is captured by the Sinners it is so that she can scan the canyon and find Pandemonium's head. The way it is drawn (visual reference here, she seems to be viewing visions of the surrounding area all at once. To put a limit on this power, it seems that viewing other places in close detail is very draining for her, and she can do only so much searching before she is exhausted.
Finally, she also seems to have some sort of holy magic, but this is barely touched upon. When fighting against the reanimated head of the demon Pandemonium, Mary seems to use some sort of holy blast that hurts and distracts the demon. However that is literally all we see of that power. I would be fine in defining it as limited blasts of light magic, akin to a weak level light spell in some Japanese RPG.
(PS: As I was writing this, I realized how game-breaking a lot of Mary's powers can be. I'm pretty sure that her powers of foresight will have to be capped in some way, so just let me know what would be the best way to play that.)
Items/Weapons: The clothing that she was wearing before she died, Chrono's coat which was draped over her shoulders, and the needle and thread that she was using.
Sample Entry: Hm, how very lucky.
[and as she says that, Mary shifts the video device so that she is looking straight into it] Is this working right? This device is quite strange... But it seems easy enough to understand with practice. [anyway, she clears her throat and regards everyone on the other end of the device with a smile]
Hello. I know I've met quite a few people here already, but I will introduce myself all the same. My name is Mary, and it is a pleasure to meet you all. I've noticed that some of you have been here for quite a while, and I can only imagine the state of your clothing. As chance would have it, I was mending clothing before I arrived here. [a small while lie, but it's not really important. With her spare hand she holds up her needle and thread]
If anyone has clothes that need mending, please tell me. I would be happy to patch up any holes that need fixing. [another smile, before she puts down the needle and taps her chin]
I do believe that's everything that I had to say, although I would be more than happy to talk to anyone who wanted to talk. [she laughs lightly] I love meeting new people.
Sample Entry Two: As she closed the communication device, she let out a sigh and stared ahead at the ruined city that lay before her. How strange, to feel the wind in her hair... to curl her hand into a fist and feel her own skin. To be alive, the feeling still took her breath away and frightened her all at the same time.
She had lived a good life, this was something that she had decided a long time ago. As she watched Chrono through the eyes of Rosette, she could not be more proud. He was finding happiness, joy, life... All of it again, all through this wonderful young woman. As the two made friends, had adventures, traveled to right Aion's wrongs, she could not be more proud. She had assumed that her life was done, that now she could watch in peace until Chrono and Rosette accomplished all of their dreams.
But now she was here-- alive, breathing, and existing. What was she to do here? Was it a chance at second life? Perhaps she should use this to achieve some sort of life that she never had before. Should she always remember that all she has to return to is death, and therefore only use her limited life to help those who had something to return to? Should she work to help other people and build relationships, or would that only be a cruel joke to them and herself?
She had no way to know, and as she took a deep breath she let such thoughts fly away as she exhaled. She was thinking too much about this, about things that she had no answer to. For once in her life she had no idea where her life would lead, and she was faced with people whom she did not understand in the slightest. Doing what feels right, maybe that's all she can do.
Ah, but there was no use dwelling on such thoughts here on the roof. She had just promised that she would do some mending. The thought made her smile, and that in itself surprised her. Helping people... yes, that was a good place to start.
