Applications Two

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
The next application opening date is Friday 16th January, 7pm EST.
The next application processing date is Friday 23rd January, 7pm EST.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

To see what we are looking for:

Character Name: Jeane
Canon: No More Heroes
Canon Point: Right before her battle with Travis, and right after explaining who she is to him.
Background/History: Game's wiki | Her wiki
Personality: Jeane is your typical condescending, provocative, evil-to-the-bone main antagonist of No More Heroes. Though she only appears for a short while, she also reveals her whole backstory to the protagonist, Travis, in literal fast-forward. The game itself fast-forwards through this part because, as fourth wall breaking Jeane explains beforehand, "that alone would jack up the age-rating of this game."

Suffering from a terrible past from her mother's suicide, to her father's sexual abuse, to a career of prostitution, Jeane has never had it easy. The world didn't spare her, and so she chose not to spare the one who ruined it all from the start - her father. Most people rehabilitate themselves after coming out as a victim of sexual harassment by going to therapy, trying to move on with their lives and forget about it, etc. etc. However, that isn't even close to what she did. Her vitriol and pure hate for "that bastard" was so strong that she killed him in cold blood along with his other wife right in front of their child - her half-brother and killer, the protagonist. This shows how psycho determined for vengeance she was, as well as how merciless she is in terms of fighting (a.k.a. she won't stop until her opponent is dead).

In a picture of young Jeane right after killing her father and stepmother(?), covered in their blood and standing in the mess that was their bodies, she was holding her stepmother's detached arm. And smiling. While presumably in front of Travis. Though this trait was subdued with age (to an extent), Jeane was not at all mentally stable. She wanted their blood on her hands. She wanted to see them suffer. She was a sadist through and through, which mind you could have been prevented if she had gotten help after leaving her father.

When she meets Travis for the first time since killing his parents, probably around less than ten years, she flat out tells him she's going to kill him, right after killing someone else without a word about it. She teases him, basking in his anger and enjoying every second of it. Once again, this is where her sadism comes into play.

"I killed your parents. You must be burning up with rage."

She doesn't care about him, or... anything else for that matter, but she does care about whether or not he's dead. She wants to destroy the last piece of evidence of her previous life so she can finally start from a clean slate and live without all of the pain his family has caused her.

After they hash it out in battle, her fists against his sword, Travis gains the upper hand and it's evident to both of them that Jeane is the one who's going to be dead in a few minutes. He indirectly tells her that he's going to kill her out of vengeance for his parents, but also as a means to end her depressing life. Surprisingly, she tells him with a smile on her face that he's right and she's "had enough" and waits for him to kill her, this shows how upset and broken she really is on the inside, how at that point in her life, death is the only help she can ever get. Of course, she'd be too prideful and ignorant to let this show at any moment prior to her "breakdown", so really, she's just a nasty, whacked up, witch without this epiphany she had a little too late.
Abilities/Powers: Jeane is an avid martial artist. Her training was so expensive (which is probably a teller of how effective it was) that she had to work as a prostitute to fund herself. She dedicated her whole life to becoming a skilled enough fighter to kill her father, so that's like... a whole life of training. She even punched a hole through someone's chest... and through another person's private parts?!
Items/Weapons: Nothing.

Sample Entry: Using Haven's lovely testdrive!
Sample Entry Two:

"I've had enough."

She knew it was coming; she practically asked for it. No, she did ask for it! All she could do was stare in front of her without really looking and wait for it like a wimp.

Jeane wasn't lying when she had said she'd had enough. But she didn't think she'd be this desperate to die. People like this? They're weak. Too weak to go on living and face their hardships like a big kid. She faced her problems, didn't she? She took them head-on and solved them - got rid of those menaces that made her life a living hell for good, and almost got rid of the last pest, too. That's definitely dealing with her problems!

Jeane wasn't lying, and that's why in the last moments of her life, the realization that she really is nothing but a wimp hit her like a brick.

Watching the sword in front of her loom dangerously near her head, she smiles. If she's been a wimp this whole time, can't she be a wimp now, too? She really is happy, happy that it's all going to end soon. She counts every hour-lasting second before sword finally clashes with flesh and bone.

She wouldn't give the last moment for the world.

YOMIEL | GHOST TRICK | RESERVED 2/?

Personality:

Imagine an ordinary man who lives a comfortable, happy life. He has a woman in his life who loves him just as much as he loves her. He has a well-paying job he's good at. Overall, he has a life that he's proud to have.

Now, take that all away at once from the ordinary man, and what do you get?

Yomiel never intended on being the villain of the story. In fact, he never saw himself as the villain at all. One minute, he was an ordinary computer engineer whose life was simple and free of problems. He was even going to marry his fiance in the near future, just to make his life happier. But when he was forced into a corner by a man who thought he was responsible for something he was completely innocent of, he snapped. He stole a gun, and took a little girl hostage, and then was stopped by the most bizarre twist of fate in the world - a piece of a meteor that struck his heart and killed him in the blink of an eye.

In Yomiel's eyes, none of that was his fault. He is the victim. He was the one whose life was turned into a mockery of life, whose fiance died because she thought that he was dead for good. Why shouldn't he be angry about the horrible hand that fate decided to deal him?

On the outside, Yomiel seems deceptively normal. He gives off the appearance that he is a rather okay person- he isn't overly nice, but he isn't too mean, either. He seems to just be passing through life without any worry, bearing a nonchalant air that he uses to throw people off. The way he described it himself, he said he felt like he walked through a world where nobody cared about him. Not that this bothers him- he seems to take it in stride, all while observing how people act in the meantime.

On the inside, though, is a completely different story. Even though only ten years have passed since the beginning of his ghostly existence, Yomiel has turned to methods and plans that would make people shudder. Fueled by the desire for revenge, Yomiel doesn't care if anybody gets hurt or killed, as long as he comes out on top. He even stands calmly when a hitman kills a friendly dog - why should he care about it? Only his revenge matters now. He is insulting, and often mocks people he hates openly, laughing when they try to threaten or hurt him. He manipulates people extraordinarily well even without his powers, and the fact that he can literally get into somebody else's head just makes it even worse. He is the king of his own self-centered little world, and shows no remorse at his actions. Yomiel refers to this as his "darkness", a place which he has been sinking in for the last several years.

But far in the depths of himself, a place which he refuses to acknowledge, is the true picture of Yomiel's life - inside, he's just a broken, lonely man who lives an empty existence he hates like nothing else. He doesn't want to manipulate people. He doesn't want to be immortal. He's extremely desperate for anything resembling a normal life, so much so that he sells his skills to a country which promises to construct him an artificial life as exchange for his services as a manipulator. Despite his big self-righteous speeches, Yomiel can be very naive, for his desperate bargain with the country only resulted in him being backstabbed later in the road. Overall, he's just tired and depressed of his situation, and this is the reason why he did all he did - he wants others to feel the same pain he went through all those years. He doesn't want to be the only one who understands his own situation.

In the end, Yomiel will never be a part of the world he pines for so much.

Abilities/Powers:

In Yomiel's world, there is something called Temsik. Temsik is actually a meteorite that comes from god knows where in the universe, and is a strange rock that has the most peculiar of effects on people, especially the recently deceased.

Not all of the secrets of Temsik have been found, but it is known that it has two effects: on time, and on power. Anyone who dies in the vicinity of a Temsik meteorite gains powers of the dead when they wake up as a ghost. These powers are focused on manipulation, whether of inanimate objects (a dog named Missile could swap objects that were the same shape, like a wheel and a donut) or of animals/people (like what Yomiel can do). Bear in mind that the majority of ghosts with Temsik powers aren't poltergeists - the main character, Sissel, couldn't make a bike fly through the air or make a dresser burst in flames. Also, Sissel and other ghosts couldn't manipulate every single object in existence - only certain objects could be manipulated because they had something called cores that ghosts could latch onto and possess.
.
However, this is where Yomiel differs. Yomiel died in the presence of a Temsik meteorite, yes, but he died with a Temsik meteorite fragment inside of him, which has probably made him the most powerful ghost in the Ghost Trick universe. First of all, Yomiel is the only ghost who has shown the ability to manipulate living things, such as animals and people. He can literally jump into a person's body from his own to make them do things such as write a death sentence, say things the person never meant to say, and even kill others with their own hands. However, this isn't a perfect power - first of all, Yomiel has problems with possessing people with particularly strong willpowers, such as the character Lynne. He jumped into her body, trying to make her raise a gun to shoot at him. However, he met with great resistance, and although he eventually forced her to shoot, it took him much longer to do so than a person who didn't have a strong willpower. Another flaw of this is that he cannot manipulate his own body the same time he's possessing someone else, and has to leave his empty shell of an undying body behind somewhere as he does his manipulative work.

For, you see, the second major power that the Temsik meteorite gave Yomiel is the ability of time. Not of manipulating time, but since the rock entered his body, it has been circling his body between the time of death and life - he is a literal Schrodinger's cat, his body neither completely dead or alive. Therefore, any wound you try to give him, whether it's a shot to the head or stabbing in the chest, will close up immediately because the meteorite in his chest just returns the "time" of his body to when it died. He's even survived explosions before without a single scratch. However, he can no longer feel any pain while using it, even though he possesses it constantly - it's just an empty puppet of a body that he manipulates to act like a real one. He can't eat, can't sleep, and overall, can't really do anything that a living human being could do. Even if somebody cut his hair, it would grow back to the way it was. He doesn't even bleed. However, if one found a way to remove that piece of Temsik from his body, his body would just return to the moment of death and stay that way, becoming a regular corpse without any healing factor whatsoever. Yomiel would still survive as a spirit in that case, but his body would be lost for manipulating purposes.

Last but definitely not least, Yomiel has the greatest power over inanimate objects in the Ghost Trick universe. Like Sissel, the main character, he can use the cores of objects to move them and use them for his own wishes. He can also manipulate several objects at the same time, as when he created a body for himself out of various objects when he lost his usual one. He also has the power to move through phone lines if they're active - he has to leave his body behind for that, but this enables him to move quickly from place to place without much hassle.

Overall, Yomiel is a ghost in a shell, a spirit that can control almost everything if he so desires. And fueled by the depression of his empty existence and the anger of the people who made it happen, he'll do anything to get revenge for what happened to him.

ALSO OF NOTE: Yomiel is a really excellent software engineer (he said he was the best there was, in his opinion), so it's very fair to say that he knows his way around computers and creating code and hacking, if he has to. However, as for fighting ability, he has none, though he does know how to shoot a gun if it's given to him. Other than that, the majority of his abilities are Temsik-related.

Items/Weapons:
An empty black briefcase with a bullet hole in the side.
His sunglasses.
His cool red suit.

What's the fuss about?

[The man on the other end of the camera is dressed rather nicely, what with his classy red suit and dark sunglasses - his blonde hairdo, on the other hand, is ridiculous, but he doesn't seem to care. He gives a casual shrug, as if he's going to start asking about the weather.]

Some people are talking about monsters and stuff...I don't really get it. I haven't seen any around. Just the plants, which, really need to get a trimming or something. Can't any of you get a gardener down here or something?

[He adjusts his sunglasses with a shake of his head.]

Eh, but whatever. [A pause.] Hey, can anyone tell me about that barrier thing outside of town? Yeah, the big invisible wall. Have any of you, I don't know, tried to break it down? I mean, everything has its weaknesses, so...I don't know, I think it's worth a shot. I kind of have an important thing to get back to at home, and I can't really go and have a nice vacation while it isn't finished, as much as how beautiful this place is.

[It's quite obvious he's being sarcastic.]

Anyways, just though I'd ask. Never thought I'd wake up in a different place...but, well, there's always a first time for anything, right?

[He smirks, before switching off the camera. Oh, there always is a first time...always.]

Sample Entry Two:

Dead man walking. That's what he was. People in Haven were up in tears again, talking about how some people had died in a raid or something or another...

Yomiel didn't care. Why should he? They didn't mean anything to him, and he was dead himself. He walked the streets casually, like a man not afraid of any danger. Monsters? He would heal from their claws, their teeth. Other people? Just lets see them try to shoot a gun into his head, and let's see who has the last laugh. A few people had derided him today for being so distant from the matter, but all Yomiel did was shrug. That's all he could do. His powers could never be used to save people, how many times had he tried that before? No, he had stuck to this path of darkness, because honestly, it was the only thing left. Well, he could roam the streets to see where he would end up, but he'd rather go insane than let himself live such an empty life.

There are no living things in Haven besides the people there. He almost wants to see a stray cat at some point, digging through the trash for a morsel...just like Sissel would. Oh, Sissel...he frowns, when he thinks about the events of that night. That other ghost he saw, could it have been...? Nah. Possibly not. It was just another feverish hope in his mind, that's all. He has other things to focus on now, like getting out of here.

...Maybe that Yao Corporation had something to offer, though. He had his services, and that corporation had a lot of influence on the place and its people. Perhaps he could strike up another bargain like he did back home. It would be beneficial for both parties, really...or maybe he could just find a way out the barrier, use his powers to create a crack in it so he can slip out. He's thin enough for it, really.

He smirks to himself in the darkness. Ah, options, options...now, what's a dead man to do?

Character Name: Kamina
Canon: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Canon Point: End of episode 8 so uh. He's a little dead, whoops.
Background/History: how's that taste
Personality:

Simon (and Kamina, for that matter, since he knows himself incredibly well) says it best: Kamina is like a volcano. Underground, the pressure builds and builds until, eventually, it explodes. MAGMA EVERYWHERE. This is a pretty great analogy- Kamina's an explosive sort of dude. His personality is this gigantic, ridiculous behemoth barreling along at warp speed and even if it encounters some turbulence, it keeps right on going...until it hits an immovable wall. At which point Kamina is like FUCK THIS WALL THIS WALL ISN'T EVEN HERE BECAUSE I SAY SO. And the cycle continues. But everyone around him sort of lets it continue; he's so persistent, so bullheaded, so sincere (in his own weird Kamina way) that you really have no choice but to be swept up in his shitstorm or let it flatten you.

This is the idiot who thought it was a great idea to jack a Gunmen and force it to acknowledge him as its pilot. Before him, none of the resistance fighters on the surface considered that a viable option because...IT'S CRAZY. But you can always count on Kamina to bring the crazy 'round for supper. Turns out his idea really was great, though, and he inspired others to follow suit. He practically oozes charisma, and not only that, he gets results. He's a believer in the notion that deeds are greater than words, and he'd rather be out doing something instead of just talking about it. Which doesn't mean he's a man of few words. It's the opposite. Actually. HE TALKS SO MUCH. HE IS ALWAYS. TALKING. Or yelling. Or making noises of disgust. Etc. He's got enough hot air to power a balloon ride around the world many times over. Buuuuut his turns of phrase are often memorable and he sure does know how to boost morale in the face of a decisive battle.

He knows it, too. If there's one thing Kamina lacks, it isn't confidence. He's always confident, regardless of what he's up against, and he takes it upon himself to shore up the confidence of others- namely Simon, who doesn't have enough. Yeah, Kamina is kinda (very) boastful and he has this odd fixation on being manly (and what that entails) and he did more or less declare himself the leader of Team Gurren Lagann- later, team Dai-Gurren- but he's suited to it, and serious about it. He's aware people are looking to him as an example. He's aware good leaders don't just lead, they make sure the people fighting under them will be able to stand on their own, make their own decisions, forge their own paths. And if anyone gives in or gives up, a good leader is there to punch them in the face. A SHINING PUNCH OF CLARITY.

Kamina's not perfect, though. Far from it. He sometimes contradicts himself by saying one thing and doing another. He's crude. He's argumentative. He has no manners whatsoever, and he's not romantic in the slightest (sorry, Yoko). He's a sucker for the ladies and their boobies, and will do just about anything to see them naked, up to and including walking into an obvious trap. His overconfidence is ultimately what leads to his demise. At the end of the day, however, he's a good guy who is fighting to make a world where people are free, where kids can run around under the sun with no walls holding them back and nothing to be afraid of- he retreated back underground and couldn't follow his father on the surface when he was a kid, and it impacted the man he grew up to be.

Bottom line: HE IS MORE GAR THAN YOU.

Abilities/Powers: HAHAHAHA THE ABILITY TO BE GIANT IDIOT? But no, really, he doesn't have any flashy powers or whatever, but he is skilled with a sword, he has pretty good aim as far as shooting is concerned, and he's shown to be pretty insightful when it comes to tactics during battle.

Items/Weapons:

-His clothes (including cape)
-His sword
-His stupid super fly sunglasses.

Sample Entry:

[The video springs to life in time to capture Kamina backing away from the camera. He has propped it up on a pile of rubble, and he himself stands on his own pile now (that he may or may not have built up on his own to ensure the MOST MANLY AND BADASS POSE). He crosses his arms and smirks down at the camera, showing plenty of teeth.]

Yo! Listen up, I've got a few things to say!

[He pushes his ridiculous sunglasses up with his thumb.]

He aimed higher than sky, higher than the heavens, higher than a thousand thousand universes. A true man with indomitable spirit, forever the paragon of masculinity. When you hear of the great Kamina that even Death himself couldn't kill, they're talking about me!

[Don't you feel inspired. LOOK AT THIS AWESOME COUNTENANCE, LITTLE PEOPLE, AND BE AWED.]

Haven is a depressing wasteland, there's no sun in the sky to shine down on our faces and lighten our hearts. We're expected to abide tyranny day in and day out, a constant, unyielding assult. Bullshit! Now is the time, go beyond the impossible and kick reason to the curb! I say we grab our captors by the balls and crush them. We move boldly, decisively, or not at all. Don't give in to fea- OOOOOOOIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!!!

[THAT SURE WAS AN EARTHQUAKE. And that sure was Kamina flying off his soapbox. Literally.

Farewell, sweet..........uh. Prince. Or whatever.]

Sample Entry Two:

Kamina wasn't afraid of death.

After all, Death came for everyone, sooner or later. Whether you were hale and whole or old and infirm, it was non-partial. Undiscriminating. Any day could be your last day, so it was best to live as if you had everything to lose, should you decide to remain idle. A man wasn't measured by the words he said in life. He was measured by his deeds. By the people he inspired, by the mark he left behind on the world, a mark too big and too deep to erase or fill. That was how you lived forever, by choosing your path and never wavering from it, never doubting that you made the right choice, even if it cost you the rest of your time on earth. A small price to pay.

Kamina wasn't afraid of death.

He was afraid of the little boy who saw a glimpse of the surface, a place without walls or ceilings or tunnels, and couldn't bring himself to stay there. The little boy who watched his father's retreating back and didn't follow, but rather scurried underground again where everything was familiar and safe. He was afraid of the bones dug up in the desert, all that remained of a man who preferred to be free, yet died alone with his story untold. (Why hadn't Kamina followed him?)

So he lived as if he had everything to lose. He didn't run, didn't hide, didn't become paralyzed by fear. He fought to create a world where kids like Simon could grow up without any cares or worries

And when Death came for him, he smiled.

salkjdal i'm so sorry

[personal profile] duldum 2014-01-17 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:
In order to fully grasp Echo’s character, it is important to know that she is what is considered a “special case,” even in a crazy canon full of twists and turns like Pandora Hearts. Within Echo’s body actually lies two very distinct personalities, along with a Chain (creature from the Abyss) occasionally thrown into the mix.

Here is a breakdown to help make things a little less confusing (though maybe it won’t at all):
Noise is the original owner of the body. Her Chain is Duldee. Duldee created a split personality within Noise to help her handle Duldee’s power. This personality was named Duldum, though now everyone (sans Duldee) just refers to her as Echo. Overall, the Baskervilles mostly refer to them both as Zwei because of the two personalities.

First – a bit of background: In recent chapters, Noise’s backstory has been fleshed out a little more. The readers are now aware that 100 years ago, her original history began as a Baskerville, one of those special “chosen ones” called by the Abyss to act as its messengers. However, unlike the other Baskervilles, Noise was… special. Though “special” in this case did not mean anything good, for the Chain that Noise had created a contract with was too strong for her frail 16 year old body and mind to contain and control. Rather than be able to wield her Chain like a weapon, Noise instead fell victim to Duldee’s great power, oftentimes blacking out and thus becoming susceptible to violent rampages that she would later wake up from and never remember. Because of this great liability and the other Baskervilles’ inability to truly contain her while she was in this state, she was then sentenced to life locked up in an underground room by Oswald Baskerville, the current Glen. It was here that Duldum, later to be known as Echo, was created by Duldee herself in order to help out her contractor. Echo’s very existence – and thus, sole purpose in life – is to act as a bit of a buffer for Noise so that she could control Duldee’s power. Overtime, both personalities had grown to be two very separate (and vastly different) individuals that reside within the same body.

Noise had initially been a very frail, very sad girl. As the original personality, Noise had had to shoulder the burden of her misdeeds all by herself for a time. It isn’t specified, but it can be assumed that for a significant-enough amount of time, Noise had been locked up and isolated due to her inability to control her Chain. This, coupled with the fact that she had been told about her defects, had naturally given her a very poor image of herself. She readily admited to a young and curious Vincent (then Baskeville) that she was an aberration or a heretic of the Baskerville Clan because of how easily her Chain overwhelmed her. It would get so bad that she would often have no recollection of what happened, but that she apparently became very violent and uncontrollable in the meantime. Duldee’s power was so overwhelming that it actually ate away at Noise’s sanity and very being, erasing most of her past to the point that she could not even remember her original name when she tried to introduce herself t Vincent. She was quick to cry, miserable about her very existence and apparent uselessness to the Baskervilles, but Vincent had been the one to give her a bit of hope back then. He told her since they were both aberrations, that simply meant that, to each other, they were normal. He had, in a way, given Noise her very first form of acceptance – as well as an identity (dubbing her “Noise” because of how loudly she would cry).

100 years later, Noise’s loyalty to Vincent has gotten to the point of manic obsession. True, there are still traces of the girl Noise had once been – in the eager way Noise is to please Vincent, in her desperation for his love and acceptance, in her submissiveness towards him to the point of being simpering – but they are few and exclusive only to Vincent himself. Instead, Noise is usually wild and barely-contained. Even the other Baskervilles are wary of her, afraid of what she would get up to “on her own.” Their uncertainties are not without warrant, of course; Noise is shown to listen to hardly anybody but Vincent (she likely wouldn’t even listen to the Glen himself if Vincent hadn’t aligned himself with them). Noise is reckless and impulsive, eagerly charging into battle without a plan or any regard for the safety of her comrades or herself. Her instincts are more readily geared towards violence, though killing isn’t necessarily her first choice, as she’s been shown to take great pleasure in taunting and toying with her victims before making any killing blows. Vincent is her only priority – she would do anything he asks for without a second thought, still believing in the child Vincent’s words that they were “the same” and that he therefore understood and loved her despite her defects. She doesn’t show to have a care for anyone else (with perhaps the exception of Duldee), not even Echo. As her confidence in herself grew (fueled almost entirely by Vincent’s pandering), the more she saw less use for Echo. Indeed, she regularly taunts and degrades Echo, often referring to her as “disposable.”

It’s because of Noise’s volatile tendencies that she is often not the main personality present. Despite being the original, more often than not, she is “sent back” to recover from a wound she might have sustained, or simply because Echo is much more easily controlled and subdued.

In contrast, Echo had initially been the uncontrollable one. Because she had been a personality created by Duldee, her main purpose was to take over whenever Duldee’s power became too much for Noise. In the flashback showing young Vincent and Noise’s meeting, Echo had been the manic one, prone to crazed laughter and grins that hinted at something unstable. She was rude and domineering, where Noise had been meek and submissive. She was also quite blunt and tactless, uncaring that her comment about Vincent’s red eye had upset or offended him. Yet, despite this, she was still quite quick to obey Vincent when he’d ordered her to let Noise back out instead.

Now, 100 years later, Echo is much more subdued, yet still just as quick to obey Vincent’s commands. Her loyalty, much like Noise’s, is unshakable – but unlike Noise, it is not blind. Vincent is still her Master, but somewhere along the way she had grown to develop a strong sense of fairness as well. She will still follow her orders without question, but she has been shown to hesitate and/or deviate from them when she can, if she feels the need to.

Unlike Noise, there is much more to Echo than her devotion to Vincent. Through the years, she has grown from the crazy puppet that Duldee had created to something a little more her own. While it might be easy to write Echo off as nothing more than a blank puppet (she does have quite the deadpan expression/tone), every now and then there will be little hints to a personality that implies much more.

Like her past self, Echo remains very blunt. While she seems to have a better sense of tact now, she still doesn’t really hesitate to make comments that range from idle observations to (unintentionally) snide or sassy remarks. She is, at the very least, polite now! Her manners are much more refined, as well as her recognition of figures of authority and rank.

In another contrast to Noise, Echo seems to be very curious about the world outside of Vincent Nightray. She has been shown to be very intelligent, such as knowing the composition of fireworks and economics, so one can at least assume she’s been book-learned. She keeps a little black journal of daily observations that she makes; it’s an almost methodical process of note-taking, complete with timestamps and objective comments. People (and their habits) seem to fascinate her to the point where she takes an almost scientific approach to most things in life, but she seems reserved in her curiosity, content to stand in the background and watch rather than take part in the process herself.

Of course, this could actually be another indication of Echo’s poor self-esteem. Knowing full well the reason for her creation, as well as having to constantly suffer Noise’s own deprecation, Echo doesn’t think all that highly of herself, let alone what she feels she deserves. She mentions to Oz Vessalius that, as an “Echo of a Voice,” she does not have the right to fight against” her mistreatment. In her tirade against Vincent Nightray, she never once mentions any qualms about how he abuses her, implying that she either thinks she deserves it, or at the very least doesn’t think she deserves any better.

She is weak and susceptible to Vincent’s commands, and even curls up and cowers against Noise’s verbal abuse, but despite all this, Echo maintains a quiet strength that has likely been prompted by her meeting of Oz Vessalius. In Oz, Echo has been able to be herself for once (ironically enough by pretending to be someone else) and in that, a different sort of loyalty had been born. She goes out of her way to visit Oz once the Baskervilles had finally imprisoned him. She couldn’t believe that the same boy who’d given her so much hope and faith that one day could be the very same boy who seemed so ready to give up in that prison, and so she tries her best (in her own, clumsy ways) to cheer him up. So Echo is far from the empty doll that Vincent, Noise, and even her creator, Duldee, chalk her up to be. It’s in these moments that her humanity shows – her capacity to grow and hope and maybe even love.

Abilities/Powers:
healing: like other Baskervilles, Echo possesses the helpful ability to heal from a number of otherwise life-threatening wounds. Because of the nature of her split personalities, however, Echo is able to heal at a much faster rate than the others. This is because while one is injured, the other personality surfaces to allow the injured one time to recuperate and vice-versa.
combat: Echo has shown to be proficient in both hand-to-hand and blade fighting. She is agile and acrobatic, often using these abilities to help her out-maneuver her opponents.
endurance: Echo can run long distances and jump high altitudes without tiring.
durability: she can also withstand most physical torture and abuse without so much as a flinch.
Duldee: the Chain that Noise illegally contracted is called “Duldee,” who has the unique ability to create ‘puppet’ strings that allow the contractor to take control of anyone that comes into contact with it. Duldee can also allow her contractor the ability to control a person mentally (to the point of possessing the person’s body and mind) if the person’s will were weak enough. Duldee’s range is vast – she has been shown to control a great number of people at one time, and is even strong enough to control another contractor’s Chain if she already has the contractor ensnared. Another component of Duldee’s power is not only the control of others as if they were puppets, but to actually create puppets themselves – such as in the case of Duldum, the separate individual that Duldee had created within Noise’s body in order to help her control all of Duldee’s power. (One can argue, too, that overtaking another person entirely can also count as a creation of an individual puppet within said person, such as her control of young Gilbert earlier on in the series.)

It should be noted that there are a few people who are immune to Duldee’s strings (Vincent being one of them, likely other Children of Misfortune would be as well), though a couple of people have been shown to resist Duldee’s control through sheer force of will. Duldee appears in the form of a woman tied up with marionette strings and blind-folded. It should also be noted that Noise seems to have the closest relationship with her Chain than any other character in the series. She would often interact with her Chain even outside of battles.

(Note: Both personalities have all of the capabilities listed with the exception of the control of Duldum. Currently in canon, Echo has not yet once been shown to utilize their Chain, though whether it is because she can’t or won’t is left unanswered.)

Sample Entry Two:
When she wakes up this time, with no recollection of having fallen asleep, she thinks it must have happened again. (No, no, not again, not now.) Immediately, she checks her person for the typical signs: tattered clothing, fading wounds, blood, blood, blood. None of those, though, nothing but the same clothes she’d been wearing during the last memory she can recall, a bed, and the faint blaring of an alarm not too far from where her head had been resting.

She stares at it, the little clock that just won’t stop making that racket, and feels something clench in her chest. (Noisy, so noisy.)

Her arm lashes out. There’s a loud clatter, but the sounds have stopped. Peace, for now.

She forces herself to stop, taking in a breath. The room she’s in is unfamiliar to her, but that doesn’t have to mean anything bad. Perhaps she had merely fainted, and Master Vincent had placed her elsewhere. Perhaps her room is being occupied. Perhaps she’d gotten lost.

(Perhaps he’d thrown you away for good~)

“—Stop.” She surprises herself with the sternness of her voice, but somehow the steady tone of it is enough to ground her. Enough to get her to pick her chin up, stare straight ahead and focus. That’s right. Focus. She can’t stop here, not when there’s still something left she has to do.

Oz.

Personality:

Warning: This section has spoilers for the Phase Shift novels, as well as Chronophantasma!

Friendly, bubbly, honest, and optimistic, Celica's your typical cheerful heroine. She's often seen smiling or even giggling, which makes it difficult for even Ragna to scowl all the time. Her selflessness keeps her from being able to avert her eyes away from anything or anyone who may be in trouble, as naive as it may seem to others. She's well-aware of the fact that others find it to be silly and/or futile, but doesn't care; she simply cannot ignore someone in need. Seeing as how she has the rare ability of using healing magic, Celica almost feels as though she's obligated to put it to use. Even after a group of hounds under the influence of the Black Beast attack her and Ragna, she heals their wounds after Ragna fights them. Likewise, in Phase Shift 1, when Kazuma suddenly feels ill, Celica jumps to his aid despite her feeling unwell herself. In this aspect, she's also a little motherly and often wants to treat and take care of people. Upon finding Ragna's collapsed body, she takes him in and treats his wounds. Later in the novel, when Ragna begins to get a headache as some memories return before he runs into Rachel, Celica takes care of and heals that as well. Even in the future she eventually becomes the foster mother of him, Jin, and Saya as she looks over the church.

As mentioned, Celica is an optimist, as well as a bit of a dreamer. This is shown in the fact that she believes in her father being a good and alive men, despite how many others say the opposite. On top of this, however, she also has a dream in which Japan would be restored to its former glory from before its destruction from nuclear weapons that had been used (unsuccessfully) against the Black Beast. She hopes that all the bad things in the area be cleaned up, and that the land, air, and water would once again be beautiful, fresh, and safe. Considering how unsafe the area of Japan is during this time, such a dream really doesn't seem likely. Loving her home though, where her father and mother had met and married, Celica still hopes that the country would one day be restored.

Now, back onto the note about her father, Celica finds her family to be extremely important. She's absolutely determined and persistent to find her father, despite everyone telling her that she shouldn't due to the large possibility of him being dead or becoming a wanted man. Even her own sister, Nine, is against it and hates their father, which always bothers Celica as is considering how their mother is dead so only her, Nine, and their father are left. Why hold such animosity toward him? Regardless, Celica ignores Nine's protests and continues to search for him out of concern and to find out the truth behind his association with the Black Beast. On top of that, she ventures onto this journey with little to no preparation. As soon as Kazuma proposes the possibility of her father being alive and there being a way to go to Japan, she gobbles up the story and leaves immediately, leaving only a small note behind for Nine. She just wants to be reunited with her father and have her remaining family together again no matter what. Even when Nine's name changes from Konoe upon becoming one of the Ten Saints, Celica's only concern is whether or not that name change affects the status of the two being sister, since they no longer share the same last name.

With her sudden journey of finding her father, it could be said that Celica is simply reckless. She leaves the only place (supposedly) safe from the Black Beast just because of the words of an acquaintance she hardly knows anything about, and is even found suspicious to Nine. When Ragna and Mitsuyoshi/Jubei meet for the first time, Celica even tries to stop them from fighting by recklessly throwing herself in between them as they charged at one another. Later, while staying at an inn, she simply leaves and goes out for a walk in the middle of the night by herself. And while in the Alucards' home, Celica opens the door of her bedroom without first asking who is even at the door, and when she realizes that it’s Ragna, she just casually invites him inside. He even calls her out on it, saying how she should not invite random guys into her room. Her only response is a giggle as she jokes around mischievously, asking if he is planning on “doing anything to her,” to which Ragna flat out yells and denies. Though she doesn’t mean to be, she can be rather careless or naïve at times. Kazuma even (inwardly) compares Celica's innocence to that of a puppy or a kitten. She just really doesn't entirely realize the dangers and possible consequences in things. This innocence can also be applied to how Nine says she has a tendency to not listen when she starts talking. Once she decides to do something, she does it despite what anyone says. An example of this is when she proposes her, Trinity, and Nine eating with Kazuma, and she just runs her mouth and gets the food despite Nine and Kazuma's protests. Overall she's just pretty rash, and even hasty.

In some of these cases, such as rushing to find her father and throwing herself in between Ragna and Mitsuyoshi, it could easily be said that while reckless, Celica is simply willing to sacrifice her life for others. This is especially important to note with the end of Phase 0. After she finds out that she's the key for Kushinada's Lynchpin (ultimately meaning that she could stop the Black Beast and save everyone), it doesn't take long for her to decide to make use of that ability, even though it would cost her her life. While ultimately Ragna and Nine do not allow her to sacrifice herself, the fact still stands that she was ready to do so, despite any fears she had regarding it. Even in Chrono Phantasma, when Kokonoe brings a "copy" of Celica to the future, she is once again willing to activate the Lynchpin for the sake of the world's wellbeing.

Also, she's incredibly directionally impaired. Even with maps. It's pretty sad.

Abilities/Powers:
Celica is capable of using healing magic. It can mend most injuries, however, it's not perfect. When she finds her father suffering from seithr poisoning, she's unable to heal him.

Celica's also an anti-body, meaning that she can suppress seithr. Essentially, seithr is an invisible substance that covers the world. In small doses it's harmless to humans, but in large ones it can be fatal. Ars Magus and Ars Armagus (the use of science to manipulate seithr instead of using magic) use seithr to operate. Since Celica's presence eliminates seithr from the area, those around her cannot use it, hence Ragna being unable to use his right arm/Azure Grimoire (which works via Ars Armagus) around her and Ishana having such a pure atmosphere without any Black Beast attacks while Celica is present.

Somehow, because of her abilities related to healing and blocking out seithr, it's noted that she is immune to colds and other illnesses.

Celica is also capable of using floating magic, though it can only primarily be used over long distances, rather than great heights.

Sample Entry Two:
from the setting of [community profile] holyrelic

After a week of being in The World, one would think that Celica would somewhat know her way around places, or at least be able to navigate where she is via the Relic, especially considering how technology similar to it does exist back in her world. On the contrary, however, this is Celica, so of course she has no idea where she is despite all of this. Will she admit it? Nope. Actually, the thought of her being lost hasn't even occurred to her yet.

"Hm... I could have sworn it was this way," she mumbles without any concern as she examines the map on her Relic. At least this is better than a traditional map in the sense that it actually shows where Celica is. Half of the times she has gotten lost before, it's just been due to the fact that she couldn't figure out her own location. Now it's just a matter of making sure that she's actually holding the device right-side-up though.

...Which she isn't.

"There aren't any dots on here, so I guess that means nobody is around this area, huh..?" Pondering about this, she continues walking around and watching her surroundings for any clue that may tell her that she's going the right way. After several more moments, a clue does indeed pop up! ...But one that informs her of quite the opposite.

Celica stares at the familiar-looking area, tilting her head slightly in confusion. "I was just here before, wasn't I?" Her line of vision shifts downward and at the device in her small, pale hand. It's just then that she realizes its orientation, and she lets out a small, embarrassed laugh. "Ah... Whoops."
