Applications Two

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
The next application opening date is Friday 16th January, 7pm EST.
The next application processing date is Friday 23rd January, 7pm EST.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

To see what we are looking for:

Character Name: Ellie
Canon: The Last of Us
Canon Point: End of Winter.
Background/History: Ellie on the Last of Us wiki.

Personality:
Ellie grew up in a post-apocalyptic world, born six years after the infection began. Her fourteen years have been spent inside a quarantine zone. It's a dull and grim world full of rebellions and soldiers that are scrambling to keep control, and simply getting by day to day made Ellie a feisty, opinionated girl that can swear as well as any adult. She's quick to cuss out anyone who pushes her, or break fingers, if need be. Even before meeting Joel, she knows how to handle herself in tight situations, even when her enemies are bigger than her--which is pretty much every enemy. She's a firecracker when it comes staying alive, biting, stabbing, shooting, and utilizing her environment whenever she feels threatened. She doesn't give up.

(Her ability to scrap with the big boys seems to come from her time in military boarding school where she had a record of "fighting, theft, running away... fighting, disobeying orders... and more fighting.")

This may make Ellie sound violent or temperamental, but she's generally no moodier than your average teen. She huffs and blows raspberries, makes fun of music and porn magazines, and finds joy in superheroes and petting animals. If someone is kind, she tends to be kind back--though she's learned that not everyone who is kind is being truthful. Once she trusts someone, she doesn't seem to mind chatting and small talk, asking questions about this and that. She might even be a little too chatty, if you ask Joel. When she meets another survivor around her age, she quickly befriends him and can be seen playing darts and other games with him to have some fun. Just because the world is terrible doesn't mean Ellie doesn't have anything to enjoy in it.

Joel and Ellie didn't quite get along that well at first. He was just delivering cargo to someone else. But, over time, Ellie comes to see him as a sort of father figure. For a young girl afraid of being alone, afraid of losing people, and carrying a lot of guilt, she finds a sort of rapport with Joel that brings the both of them comfort. They become an excellent team, overcoming obstacles, fighting side by side, and taking care of each other when times get tough. While a fourteen year old in a wasteland full of people struggling to stay alive and infected monsters might sound like a burden, Ellie is an asset, able to fit into small spaces, climb up to get ladders, and cover Joel efficiently. But most important is the emotional bond between the two that forms as the seasons pass.

While she insists she doesn't need a babysitter, and definitely is independent, she easily gets attached to others. Her biggest fear is ending up alone. Ellie discovered she was immune to the infection when she and her friend were bitten--they decided to sit and wait, to turn together. Rylie made her believe in fighting for even just one more moment with someone you love. It's always worth fighting. However, Ellie never turned. Ellie is used to people leaving her or ditching her, but the most terrifying thing in the world to her is to be left unturned, left behind. She and Rylie planned to die together, and a part of her is still waiting for her turn.

She worries about losing Joel, either due to their parting at a lab or him getting hurt. She runs away from him when it seems like he's passing her off onto his brother, because she's gotten used to Joel's presence in her life and it's easier for her to ditch him than lose him by his choosing. Ellie comes to learn that Joel's reluctance around her is because he lost his own daughter, which she probably reminds him of--and she tries to remind him that she's not his Sarah, but she's lost too many people and doesn't want to lose him, too. When Joel does get hurt, she takes care of him, finding them food and leading danger away when he's unable to defend himself. They never outright say what they are to each other. They don't need to, after a certain point.

Ellie entertains herself by collecting comic books, and when the mood needs lightening or she thinks everyone is being too grim, she pulls out a joke book. She laughs at the bad puns, though even this has been dampened by the infection--she doesn't get jokes about pizza because she's never had it before. The outside world, and the world before the infection, is fascinating and foreign. She finds it hard to believe that girls would not eat food in order to be skinny, and rolls her eyes at youth her age fretting about what clothes to wear when she finds a diary in an abandoned bedroom. Still, she's fascinated by how things were before--the idea of a bustling arcade, or ice cream truck, fills her with wonder and curiosity.

As Joel and Ellie continue on together, she's less and less in awe of the brute force necessary to stay alive, and some of her remaining childlike optimism wears off. She's more cautious, more protective of Joel, and has a healthy dose of survivor's guilt from outlasting so many people she's met. She knows she might be the only hope mankind has. Traveling across the country isn't easy, but she knows it's the right thing to do. All their suffering and loss can't be for nothing.

Abilities/Powers: None! Ellie is your average fourteen year old girl, save that she has an immunity to the infection in her world.

Character Name: Jet
Canon: Avatar: the Last Airbender
Canon Point: At the end of episode “Lake Laogai”
Background/History: here
Previous Game History: None
Personality:
Some background: Born into an agrarian Earth Kingdom village, the area he’d been raised in bordered the sea, with its major economic draw and trade potential being in fishing and in logging. In this map here, we see the area he grew up was nestled between a trading and fishing village, and bordered the Fire Nation’s colonies. It’s not surprising, then, that his village was brutalized and occupied so quickly after Ozai’s placement to the throne.
All that is known about Jet’s life before that specific attack is that he had two parents. It was never stated if he was an only child or not, but siblings are never mentioned. When Jet was eight years old, he witnessed the burning of his village as well as the murder of most of its inhabitants – his parents included – before his eyes. Though the Fire Nation Military was not officially or directly responsible for this attack, it was carried out by Nationalist Mercenaries called the Rough Rhinos that did not have to answer to military law. A run-in with General Iroh shows that the leader of the Rough Rhinos was a former important member of the Fire Nation military, and spin-off comic series shows a couple of the members had history as loyal warriors for the Fire Nation Royal Family.

Jet is profoundly and overwhelmingly defined by three traits: his unwavering passion, his unbridled anger, and his uninhibited charisma.

Introduced first as a swash-buckling type, Jet’s courageous resistance against the Fire Nation military paired with his strategic ambush and interception of their military supplies and aid work to cultivate an aura of leadership around him almost immediately. He parries with blades and words, he keeps a playful demeanor while fighting, and even takes time to greet Katara with a sweet smile and warm introduction in the middle of it all. Jet heads a vanguard of guerilla fighters that he’s deemed as the “Freedom Fighters”, working to help decolonize Earth Kingdom territory and fight off the oppressive Fire Nation occupation through acts of sabotage, ambush, physical confrontation, and supply intervention. Jet’s shown as analytical, resourceful, and incredibly accomplished as a 16 year old revolutionary with little to no funding, having his own shelter and place for children displaced by the Fire Nation up in the trees of the forest he lives in. Living off the land, he’s come to see it as an extension of not only his pain, but of the various assets he can use against the Fire Nation. He’s talkative, but elucidates a casual air about him that sinks people into comfort rather quickly with him. He is a sweet-talker, prone to flattery but straying from becoming too saccharine, mostly in part because he channels a genuine need for camaraderie when he’s amicable and attempting to form alliances. Jet is friendly and charming, understanding when to play up people’s strengths and quick to try and formulate a kinship between himself and another based on similarities.

He’s compassionate and openly sympathetic to those who have been hurt, especially those who have had their lives ravaged by war. Shown by his care for displaced youth in the forest, Jet has a soft spot for those who are hurting because of war, and is defined in his leadership abilities by his willingness to risk his own safety to keep his freedom fighters safe. On the ferry to Ba Sing Se, it is Jet that quickly decides to do something about the uneven distribution of food aboard. The war refugees were being fed next to nothing, while the captain of the ship was hoarding. Jet seized the opportunity by formulating a plan to rob the Captain of his food supply and spread it out among the refugees, showing an ability to recognize power disparity and abuse in many instances outside of the Fire Nation’s cruelty as well.

Well, he’s able to recognize these abuses in many places but within, that is.

At the age of eight, Jet looked on in helpless terror as his village was burned to the ground, and he was left without a home and without family. Displaced and having to witness his land become colonized and occupied by an aggressive Fire Nation military presence and settlers, Jet was eventually pushed into the forest as an orphan in order to live. Since then, life has been a game of survival for Jet. He learned how to get what he needed, one way or another, and how to take what he needed when it wouldn’t be given to him. Slowly, he amassed a tight-knit group of followers that looked up to him unquestioningly, and he gradually decided that he needed to make the hard decisions for their safety and survival. He would refuse to be powerless again in his life, and refuse to surrender no matter the circumstances. Life became a battle for him, and everything he’d done was justified by helping the unfortunate. Jet began to firmly believe that in order to be a leader, you needed to understand the sacrifices of war, which were mainly that the ends justified the means and that the occupation must be fought at all costs. This meant human cost too, as Jet’s anger and pathological hatred for the Fire Nation led to him plotting to drown an entire occupied village.
The village of Gaipan was a settler-village, mostly full of lumber trade, and was occupied by both the Fire Nation military and Fire Nation settlers alongside the original native residents. Jet showed an understanding of knowing that his plan would be reviled and seen as wrong by others, which is why he specifically used lies, manipulation, and psychological separation to trick Katara and the Avatar – both younger than him – into increasing enough water flow into a dam and ultimately assist in the demise of the civilians that inhabited the village. The fact that he hid this plan from Katara and Aang rather than tried to appeal to their sympathies and get them in on it (as some of his Freedom Fighters were) showed that he understood the extremity of the situation, as well as his words to Sokka when he attempted to justify it. Basically, Jet knows that he has to make the hard decisions that might lead to people hating him. He even knows that he might be seen as nothing but a terrorist or a monster in some people’s eyes. He thinks they’re blind and wrong, though, and completely passive in the hegemony and widespread suffering the Fire Nation causes.

Initially, he feels little remorse at almost murdering an entire village, and attempts to justify himself and even turn the situation around on to Sokka, Katara and Aang right until the end. They leave him, and the details are vague of what happened to Jet between then and their next meeting, though the Freedom Fighters did disband in that time.

On the Ferry to Ba Sing Se, Jet admits he’s ready to start over, showing remorseful reflection on his past actions and an acknowledgment that he’d let his anger take hold of him. His hatred for the Fire Nation still present, Jet shows that his way of living and way of coping with what he’s been through is deeply ingrained in him, and not so easy to change. Though his philanthropic passions and sympathies on behalf of other refugees stays strong, it doesn’t take long for Jet to quickly fall back into his old ways. Initially, he fixated on Lee, showing a strong interest in his “outcast” status and a need to get him on his side. He even attempts to restart the Freedom Fighters, and excuses his actions in a smooth stream of denial to his two concerned best friends, Longshot and Smellerbee. When Jet thinks or feels, it quickly can become obsessive, and he often spirals into a familiar pattern of self-justification and rationalization. Ultimately, Jet has a desperate need to be understood, which runs parallel to his paranoia and conviction that he’s misunderstood by a weak-willed world. Though he is somewhat pushy and persistent in trying to convince Li to his side, he relents and is willing to respect his decision when he’s firmly refused. He shows traces of disappointment for a fleeting moment before his expression turns to unfathomable anger at seeing a confirmation that Li’s “Uncle” is a firebender.

From then on, it’s a quick spiral downhill for Jet, whose paranoia and rage keeps him up at night, stalking two people to prove they are spies, and becoming angry at the concern of his friends. Eventually, he gives way to violence and assaults Zuko (“Li”) and his Uncle, attempting to draw them out and force their hand so they have to firebend. Eventually he’s arrested as he shouts that the Fire Nation is trying to silence him, and remains defiant to the Dai Li until he’s brainwashed and has his memories suppressed. The only thing that truly wakes him up from his dormant state is evoking the pain he’d experienced under the Fire Nation, and his life as a Freedom Fighter. To the very end of his short-lived life, Jet stays firm against authority and for what he knows is right. His fight against the Fire Nation and against corruption is essential to his identity, as he’s shown to be completely lost without it. After having his old life torn away so violently from him and left with nothing, Jet worked hard to rebuild a family for himself, and had the driving force of his battle against the Fire Nation to keep both him and his fighters surviving. He has a strong sense of family, and finds himself most comfortable in a role of working towards a greater goal with a mobilized, impassioned, united front of comrades.

Jet loves being in a role of leadership, and thrives in groups where he can feel he has purpose and also be held accountable, or else he quickly falls into self-destructive habits. Though his wrath can blind him and his fury can be insidiously indiscriminate and unforgiving, Jet is ultimately guided by his pain and his yearning to be relied on and understood. His survivalist nature has led him to trying to get understanding and cooperation by any means necessary, including dishonesty and exploitation of someone’s emotions justify a goal in mind. Most of what Jet does is in the name of foresight, with an emphasis on the bigger picture, from his waged war to his relationships. That is not to say that Jet isn’t genuine, but rather that it tends to be his modus operandi to interact with some sort of hidden motive. Even the categories of friendship, flirtation, and confidantes are tools he can use to assure someone is on his side in the future. This is both his survivalist way of looking at things as well as his need to have someone accompanying him in his fight against an unjust world.

Jet takes on a heavy burden by accepting the responsibility of taking down the Fire Nation in any way he can, and is quickly disillusioned and betrayed by protests against his behavior. Jet also has little patience for inaction and neutrality, seeing it as cowardice and collaboration. It’s the extremities of his passion and his world view that earn him the admiration of followers and the concern and fear of people who wish to see things in a more nuanced view. Jet’s thoughts are often all-consuming, especially when he has his mind set to a goal, and he’ll ignore any warnings or concerns raised about his behavior in seeing his goals through usually; he’s quick to feel betrayed and unsupported in these cases.

He can be kind of melodramatic and self-aggrandizing.

Overall, Jet is a very independent thinker. He’s not easily swayed, and as black-and-white as his mind might seem, he has an intelligent and observant grasp on situations. He knows how to control people, is an effective communicator, a convincing liar, an excellent strategist, a deadly adversary, and has a sharp ability to analyze a situation of power abuse or imbalance. He can be impulsive, and absolutely refuses to subdue his spirit of resistance, even when it’s stupid to do otherwise and a danger to his survival. He’ll put himself in danger for others easily as well, and is willing to risk getting imprisoned for strangers and allies alike, as he exhibits a strong and natural need to help the poor and fix imbalances. He can be warm-hearted and honestly sympathetic, and is always interested in being of use or being of help to a person or cause. He’s not someone who stays on the fence, and is quick to find an angle on a situation and take action to remedy anything bad he sees with it. Jet doesn’t compromise himself, and though he’s capable of self-reflection, regret, and a greater understanding and expansion of his world view, he’s ultimately ruled by the pain he’s experienced in his life, and his refusal to ever be powerless to prevent it again. He possesses an irrepressible spirit and an unfathomable rage, taking both to the grave unadulterated.

Jet || Avatar: the Last Airbender | Reserved 2/3

[personal profile] reclamatory 2014-02-25 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
Abilities/Powers: Jet is mostly self-taught in his skills, as he’s been on his own since he was eight years old. Since he’s lived in a forest for half of his life, and has helped establish a pseudo-enclave of marked territory, shelter, and his own “band” of refugees, it’s assumed that he has very honed skills of survival in the wilderness. His armor, for example, is an amalgamation of armor he’s collected –mismatched as it is—which shows his ability to patch up what he can scavenge and gather resources adequately and efficiently. His craftsmanship is also above par, and he’s incredibly good with stealth, spying, and… well, stalking. He can come up with very impressive – through ruthless—plans of sabotage and guerilla warfare.

Jet is a non-bender, and mostly fights with the aid of throwing knives, daggers, and his set of “twin hook” swords. Seeing as he’s been able to hold his own relatively well not only against benders, but against a refined, scholarly and professionally trained swordsman like Zuko, his swordsmanship is also considered well above average, as well as his ability to use the environment to his advantage.

Jet carries on him a couple of daggers (shown to easily hide when he pulled out the poisoned dagger he’d alleged that the elderly man from the Fire Nation was carrying), throwing darts, and his weapon of choice: the hu tou gou, or Tiger Head Hook Swords. These two blades are 3 feet long each, which more added components to the deadly efficiency of the swords: the back of the swords are sharp, and can be used as regular blades. The hook at the end of the swords can trip, grapple, catch, block, and give a deadly slash. The end of the hilt of the sword is also sharpened and can be used to stab someone, and the crescent guard is also used to block and slash. The two swords can also be linked, wielded to make a six-foot long reach for the blades.

Items/Weapons: Jet will be carrying the aforementioned poisoned dagger, throwing knives, and his twin hook swords.

Sample Network Broadcast:

[ It’s taken him a while to learn how to interact with this device, let alone get used to attempting to mass communicate in such an instantaneous way. The young man looks incredibly uncomfortable at first, with his brow knit in torrid frustration and his lips tightened into a confused purse. His fingers scratch at the coarse, thick tufts of hair atop his head, burrowing themselves against his scalp as he summons the courage to finally speak. It’s not as if he was usually a shy type, but it’s not often that he felt so out of his element when trying to get through to others. ]

So uh… [ Jet clears his throat, finding it odd to look into an object rather than directly at a crowd when talking. ]

Anyone here good with a chisel?

Really, any kind of chisel… I just was thinking of sharing techniques.
[ He’ll glance offscreen for a moment. ] And about that well -- [ He looks back with a more pleading look, his expression softening just a bit, though the tiredness worn on his expression is everpresent. ]

Has anyone tried to form a team to make another one? I know some techniques, and I think with the right people we could start on another one. Maybe even a couple more.

[ He doesn’t look too concerned with maybe the fact that others have thought of this before. There were many questions he wanted to ask: if art disappeared since writing did. If stories and information could be passed on through pictures, still. If the rainwater was as reliable as the groundwater from the well to drink. If anyone had dug around the well to see where the source of water was coming from. All of these and more, and yet his insatiable curiosity was stifled by his anticipation of passivity and inaction.

He was no stranger to anything like that, though.

And certainly no stranger to rousing people up out of it. ]

I mean, there has to be more people around here that like to use their hands, right? I can’t really rest unless I’m doing something with them. [ With a frown, the wheat in Jet’s mouth twists. In the end, he had to convert his desperation for company into productivity, right? What better way to bond with others? ]

If they're gonna force us to live here, we can't let them deny us comfort. They're trying to keep our spirits down by forcing us into squalor! None of you want that, right?

Sample Entry Two:

His presence alone could often command absolute loyalty and unquestioning obedience. It was in this that he often basked, letting these thoughts warm him on cool nights and comfort him in a blanket’s stead. The process of leading hungry, angry and frightened orphans was a delicate one; the planks of their tree-house had become dank and in need of maintenance and the grand feasts were punctuated by too many moments of hunger or terror. He was failing his fighters, in his eyes, and things were falling apart. He needed restoration of morale. He needed to claim more resources and notoriety.

He needed control, and he wanted to make things better.

There was too heavy of a silence that hung over their shelter that night. They’d attained infamy by displacing an entire village, and now everyone had wondered what to do about the Fire Nation’s inevitable heightened search for the guerrilla fighters. They knew it wouldn't be long before they were found out, and their leader was uncomfortably quiet at dinner.

He heard the whispers of leaving. He caught the words slip by like a current: Jet was crazy, Jet had gone too far, Jet didn’t tell all of us about this. That if they had known, they would have never went along with him. Even his closest companions seemed dislodged and unsettled, silently ruminating on their actions with looks of shame and remorse.

Jet stared out ahead, listening to the soft sounds of a cat-owl in the distance. His eyes fixed blearily ahead on to the village of Gaipan, the flooded ruins stretching down the land and over the hill. Emptied of its inhabitants, the atmosphere that loomed over the floodwaters seemed to mock Jet, aiming a pointed silence at him to show off the emptiness of his victory. He found himself feeling lost from the core of his being and right down to which direction he should face. Somehow, looking to the colossal, bare wreck before him was easier than turning around to face his comrades, of which he’d felt their stares hot against his back.

“Some of the younger ones are talking,” Smellerbee’s voice hit the air behind him with trepidation. “You know we have to get them out of here.”

“Well,” Jet replied, a little coldly. “Do they want to leave?”

“Not all of them,” she sighed, turning away with a frown. “Not most of them.”

Jet spared a look over his shoulder at her, his visage appearing barren and hollow to his friend. He glared at her with something that she could tell was residual, and that she didn’t need to take it personally. Squaring her shoulders, Smellerbee continued.

“They’ll try to smoke us out for good this time. We can’t let them get hurt,” Smellerbee started, then looked back to Longshot for reassurance before continuing. “You went too far.”

We went too far.” Pipsqueak bellowed at them without missing a beat.

“We can just relocate.” Jet closed his eyes with a knit brow, rubbing his fingers against his eyelids with a tired, sluggish stutter in his movements. “They need me to look out for them.” He looked over at some of his younger comrades, scrutinizing, with his plastered sneer of cool command fading at the sight before him.

They looked scared.

“We’re sorry, Jet.” The youngest member known as the Duke interjected solemnly, looking frightened and overtired.

It was then Jet realized that his sense of "home" had crumbled – whatever he’d amassed of it – and he could be alone again for the first time since he was a child.

“No,” Jet’s gaze averts, suddenly unable to meet the eyes of anyone before him, and unwilling to remember them as their last salvaged moments. “I’m sorry.”

His voice is hoarse as it pushes the apology through, and he realizes he isn’t quite sure what he’s sorry for. It feels like nothing and many things at once, and somewhere deep inside of him, a child is clawing its way through his ribcage, screaming it wasn't my fault and they pushed me to come to this.

Somehow, he knew that wouldn't go over as well with the others.

Personality:
So everyone is pretty familiar with Sakura Haruno from the beginning of the Naruto series. She is a love struck young girl, somewhat aggressive, and can be pretty annoying. WELL WELL, clearly if that is all you remember of her, it is time for a reality check, and maybe a little more canon review, because let’s be honest. Sakura is a total boss.

Let's forget how boss she is for a moment, though, and start by summarizing her character. Sakura is a good-natured sort of girl with a lot of punch to her personality. She's inquisitive on many matters, and likes to learn and be informed. One of her main goals as a person is to constantly become better and stronger, so that she can protect and help her own friends; especially Naruto. As a ninja, she uses medical ninjutsu (physical attacks enhanced with chakra) to assist her allies in battle, and uses chakra enforced taijutsu (i.e. martial arts) to deal punches that could pretty much kill you if you let her get a swing in. She's strong and determined, and can be pretty short tempered if given the chance.

So how does all of that play out? Sakura's character in the very beginning of the series can seem very shallow: she was once very focused on Sasuke for his good looks and skill, and considered Naruto a complete idiot. Her effectiveness as a ninja, too, was questionable, often needing Naruto and Sasuke to get her out of tight situations. As a beginning Kunoichi (female ninja), her true strength lay in her intelligence; she was extremely studious in the academy, which may attribute to her slightly weaker physical strength at the time.

As the story progresses, we definitely see a lot of change and development in Sakura's character. During the Chunin exam, Sakura makes a huge improvement in her ability to fend for herself. After Naruto, Sasuke, and Rock Lee all fail to protect her from the sound ninja, Sakura is alone, with little chance of saving her friends in her state. The sound ninja obviously have the upper hand, not only in strength but in numbers. After a failed attempt to protect her friends with traps and some physical abilities, she’s overpowered, and grabbed by her hair. In order to free herself, Sakura cuts her own hair off; something she'd spent years growing out because she heard a rumour that Sasuke liked girls with long hair. In that moment, as the title of the episode suggests, Sakura completely blossoms, finally finding her inner strength, and for the first time throws away something she cherished. Her devotion to her friends - the need to be as strong as them and do what they've done for her- is worth far more. While she isn't able to take on the three, powerful ninja herself, her outburst of strength and determination is something not displayed until that point in the anime. It’s also a great example of how much her friends mean to her, especially Naruto and Sasuke.

After Sasuke leaves the village, Sakura begs Naruto to bring him back. It’s clear she feels too weak to bring Sasuke back herself (which had technically already failed). Alas, Naruto’s attempt fails horribly, Sasuke leaves the village. In their confrontation, Naruto is seriously injured and hospitalized. Feeling guilty for expecting so much of her friend, Sakura declares that she would help him next time they tried to save Sasuke, making it her goal to become as strong as Naruto. As a result, she asks Tsunade, the fifth Hokage, to train her to be stronger. She is determined to do everything she can to bring Sasuke back.

That brings us up to the beginning of Shippuuden. We see in the first episodes that a lot has changed about Sakura, not only in her appearance, but her personality as well. She has a much "stronger" disposition. In their battle against Kakashi--similar to the bell test in the beginning episodes--Sakura displays an enormous amount of strength, destroying a field at LEAST an acre in size. She did it knowing Kakashi was hiding under the earth. A number of episodes later, Sakura shows that she is very capable as a medical ninja. When Kankaro, a shinobi of the Sand Village, is poisoned by Sasori. Not a single medical ninja in the village could find the antidote. Even Lady Chiyo, an expert in poisons and retired ninja of the Sand Village, was unable to find a cure. Sakura arrives and is immediately able to determine what needs to be done; quiet seriously, she gives Kankaro a two minute look over knows exactly what sort of poison it was and what it was doing to his body. She effectively extracts the majority of the poison with a special jutsu, and because she has enough time now, discovers the antidote. So. Thought Sakura was useless? THINK AGAIN!!! This kunoichi is totally packing heat and drugs medicine.

Sakura is consistently a very intelligent woman from beginning to present. During her time in the ninja academy, Sakura spent most of her time studying to become a ninja, verses physically training to become one. Her studious nature, as mentioned, likely attributed to her lack of physical strength in the beginning. During the written part of the chunin exam, Sakura is one of the only students in the class able to answer all the questions on the exam without cheating even once, and later it’s noted that Sakura finished the exam incredibly fast, especially notable because she hadn’t cheated. In other instances, Sakura is extremely inquisitive--while she knows a lot, she doesn't know everything. We see this right before team Kakashi's battle against Itachi, Sakura (as well as Naruto) needed a quick lesson on how to dispel the effects of genjutsu. She asks plenty of questions, but never too many, and definitely absorbs the information presented to her effectively.

Oh and by the way? Don’t fuck with SakuraLike seriously, she is not a woman to be messed with. If anyone has ever seen inner Sakura in action, it’s obvious that Sakura has a lot more flare to her personality than it leads on to believe. Inside, she’s fiery, angry, and determined. In Shippuden, that “inner” Sakura isn’t so withdrawn anymore, and Sakura is prone to let loose at any time. Take for example her confrontation with Sai, the newest member of team seven. Sai and Naruto are arguing, at which Sai makes a jab at Sasuke. Naruto doesn’t approve, but Sakura steps in to make peace between the two of them. So much for peace, though; her own furry takes over, and she nails Sai in the cheek. In the series, after Sai and Sakura are on good terms, there’s an instance in which Sai insults her in an attempt to give her a nickname. Clearly he picked the wrong one, and gets a well-deserved ass beating from Sakura for being rude as fuck. In short, don’t upset Sakura, even if you’re her friend.

Sakura has a habit of lying, hiding the truth, or manipulating a situation. Start off on easy mode, Sakura is sort of the reason Sai figures out what a 'false smile' is; as she's making peace between Sai and Naruto, her lips are curved and she looks sweet as Hawaiian bread. Next moment, BAMO, right in the kisser. She hides the truth as well. Naruto, possessed by his inner fox demon, attacks Sakura and injures her. She asks that Yamato not tell Naruto that it had happened, because she didn't want him to feel guilty or upset for what had happened. During her elaborate scheme to kill Sasuke, Sakura was throwing out words left and right in an attempt to make things happen how she wanted them to. She told Naruto she loved him to make him stop pursuing Sasuke (believing in part that his intense dedication to finding him was due to her plea while they were kids), sleep gasses her teammates to prevent them from following her, and inally goes to meet Sasuke. She tells him she loves him also, that she would give up her life in Konoha, and go against them to stay with him. The ruses are hardly fool proof: Sasuke allows her to join, but blinded by madness decides to kill her instead. Later in canon, Sai asks if Sakura still trusted Sasuke enough to fight along his side in the Ninja war, and easily determines that her smile is false and her words were lies: she certainly did not trust Sasuke.

Lady Chiyo compares Sakura numerous times to Lady Tsunade, the fifth Hokage and Sakura's teacher. The description itself is quite accurate; after training under Lady Tsunade for two years, the similarities between the two are exceptional. Both are hot tempered, skilled medical ninjas, and definitely not somebody you should mess with. It's safe to say that though she might not be as powerful, Sakura holds many of the same strengths that Tsunade has. These are her most notable attributes; in one flashback, Tsunade is training Sakura to evade attacks, something which Sakura is very good at now. Sakura proves to be an excellent student under Tsunade, mastering the art of evasion as shown in her first big fight against Sasori. More recently in the series, though, we see Sakura has finally caught up to the boys as well as her teacher. She can summon slugs, and for years now has been storing half of her chakra inside of her body for later use, a technique passed on from teacher to student.

Sakura highly respects Tsunade, as well, which would attribute to her willingness to learn from the legendary kunoichi. After the Kazekage arc, Tsunade openly declares that she trusts Sakura, as well as Shizune, more than anyone in the entire village. Their relationship is that of master and apprentice, yet they look at each other as colleagues. Sakura shares a similar, though not as strong, bond with her first sensei and squad leader: Kakashi. Unlike, say, the hot-headed Naruto, Sakura willingly listens to the orders of her superiors, and those she knows who are more experienced than she is. During the battle against Sasori, she accepts that Sasori is too strong an opponent for her alone, and because she accepted Chiyo's help and guidance, they were able to defeat Sasori without casualty.

Personality (cont.):
It was mentioned before, Sakura was obsessed with Sasuke. It's pretty bad, but being realistic, love makes us stupid. Well before the series begins, she had a crush on him. Sasuke was cool and strong; dark and handsome. Her crush ran so deep she began growing out her hair as soon as she heard the rumour that he liked long hair. Eeven at a young age, she was fiercely competitive for the chance to get with Sasuke. Llearning that her best friend Ino had a crush on him too, she ended their friendship entirely (remember: love makes us stupid), which made them rivals in combat and in love for years. During the bells test, Sakura searches out only Sasuke to assist him with retrieving the bells, whereas Sasuke wanted nothing to do with her. Kakashi says it himself: Sakura was so interested in helping Sasuke that she completely forgot about Naruto. While Sakura's infatuation was originally based off of his "good looks and charm," as time goes on, her affection for Sasuke becomes deeper and deeper. She finds that he, too, is flawed, which only humanizes him in her eyes, effectively deepening her feelings. By the end of the first part, Sakura admits to Sasuke that she's in love with him, and begs to come with him. Sasuke wouldn't allow it; when he leaves the village, she begs that Naruto bring him back.

Where does that leave her two years later? Both Sakura and Naruto are just as determined to bring Sasuke home, making it clear that both of them still consider Sasuke their friend and ally; somebody they would do anything for. After an accidental run-in with Orochimaru, they find that they have that chance again to bring Sasuke back. The team decides to pursue. Their reunion with Sasuke ends tragically, however, and it's clear that Sasuke is far more powerful than their whole team combined. Even after that crushing defeat, Sakura and Naruto both are determined to become stronger than Sasuke. It's their absolute goal to bring him home. As Sasuke descends further and further into darkness, however, Sakura comes to the conclusion that it's very likely Sasuke was never going to be the same again. Making a very risky decision, she pursues Sasuke, in hopes to kill him. Unfortunately for her plan, the old memories of their longstanding friendship (and her once powerful love for him) cause her to hesitate just before making a killing blow. At her canon point, it's likely she's given up most of her romantic feelings for Sasuke; there's implication later in the story line that despite Sasuke's appearance to finally be realigning with the Leaf Village, she doesn't distinctly trust him.

Sakura's relationship with Naruto, however, starts off on an entirely different foot. Naruto was the stupidest of stupid, the dumbest dumb, the most agitating of agitations. Sakura thought nothing but ill of him, constantly degrading him and looking down on him. Naruto was nothing but a screw up and a problem--and you could give that the snootiest Sakura pose you can think of, because seriously, how rude! This, of course, was only at the very beginning of the story. Almost immediately we start seeing a change in Sakura's opinion of Naruto. He was strong, determined, and in time she started to believe, too, that he could become the leader of their village: Hokage. When Sasuke leaves the village, she turns to Naruto for help. She wanted nothing more than for Naruto to bring Sasuke back for her. As mentioned before, much of Naruto's inner strength made her want to better herself as a ninja, so that she could one day help and protect him, too.

In Shippuuden, Sakura depends a lot on Naruto still, as an ally in battle, but also as a friend. When they meet again, Sakura seems a little carried away by how much he had grown up since they'd last seen each other; when she asks Naruto if he thought she had changed, clearly trying to get compliments (as girls do), the answer which Naruto royally fucks up. So much for that one!! Despite Naruto's long standing crush on her, Sakura takes nearly all of his romantic advances on her and kicks them to the curb.

Sakura does still care a lot about Naruto. She learns of the Nine Tailed Fox harboured inside of him, and seems upset; she'd just found out, and began to realize what made Naruto who he was. Later, the chakra of the Nine Tailed Fox leaks out of him. He loses control of the demon and it runs rampant in an attempt to kill Orochimaru. Upon seeing what they called the Nine Tails Cloak, Sakura is overcome with emotion. Thoughtless, she exposes herself to danger, weeping, and shouts that he didn't need to go to such extremes; she would save Sasuke, and Naruto didn't need to do what he was doing if it hurt him. Not long after, Naruto had regained control of himself, but he was still weak. Sakura expresses obvious concern for him; she wanted him to come on the pursuit of Orochimaru, yet knew he needed time to rest and recoup. While Yamato insists Naruto be left behind (which Naruto would never accept, anyway), she insisted that Naruto needed a short time to rest, even if it meant falling behind on their mission. She knew Naruto would be upset if they gave up their mission, thinking only of his health, but also of his hopes and dreams.

RIGHT SO. Sakura does have some short comings. Every so often, Sakura isn't strong enough to defend herself, or can't do anything about a situation. When this happens, she criticizes herself for being weak and useless. During the first series it's more common, but even in the second, Sakura feels that she isn't strong enough to protect the people she cares about. For example, after Naruto loses control of the Nine Tailed demon and returns to normal. Sakura asks if Yamato could teach her the jutsu he used to pacify the demon, which he says isn't possible for her due to specialized ninjutsu only he could perform. Sakura, even though there was really nothing she COULD do, criticizes herself for being unable to help Naruto again, especially when he might need it. Her insecurity can also work as her strength, pushing her forward to become better than she once was.

Abilities/Powers: Pulling from here
Chakra Enhanced Strength
Chakra Scalpel
Cherry Blossom Impact
Delicate Illness Extraction Technique
Four-Corner Sealing Barrier (Anime only)
Mystical Palm Technique
Sakura Blizzard Technique

Sakura has an impressive use of chakra control, allowing her to use her chakra with minimal waste. This assists in her abilities as a medical ninja. It's mentioned prior that her skill as a medical ninja are above average; she can extract poisons, such as with Kankaro; and heals extensive bodily damage, such as the aftermath of Naruto's nine-tails cloak. Sakura uses chakra enhanced punches to give her almost super human strength, too. Right before her battle against Sasori, Sakura punches out a massive boulder, no doubt a thousand times her size, without any difficulties at all.

Even without her chakra, Sakura can be a very hard hitter, and has very impressive evasive skills. One lesson Tsunade teaches her is that a medical ninja must NEVER be hit. In the battle against Sasori, Sakura is able to learn the movements of Sasori's puppets, predict his attacks, and dodge all of his hits. She does this even when bombarded by a fleet of 100 puppets. In this particular battle, Sakura is assisted by Lady Chiyo with some evasions, but Chiyo mentions herself that Sakura hardly needed assistance doing so.

Sample Entry Two:
She felt herself seep into reality with the faint buzzing of the alarm, breathing in slow, steady breaths. How strange, she thought, she hadn't remembered going to bed even. They were supposed to be heading back to the village; perhaps they were ambushed? Blinking, she turned her head to the outside of the bed, staring across at a bunk bed that matched the one she occupied now. Her brow furrows. "Naruto?" She asked, sat up, and looked around. "Kakashi-senpai? Sai?"

Why were her shoes still on? Why was she in her poncho? If something had happened, whoever was caring for her would have had the sensibility to remove those things before laying her down. And she didn't feel in pain, and there were no bandages on her. So what happened, and where was she? Her head turned around, seeking the window that let in a dreary morning light, and stared out at the grey sky and snow. A bad feeling settled in her gut, so she stood up quickly, pressed her face closer to the window, and then zipped out of the room without bothering anyone there. With uneasy haste, she pushed then pulled the front door open, and stepped out of the house, reluctantly looking left and right in complete silence.

As her gaze drifted up, all emotions in her face died away. 'In Haven, we are all safe.' "Gasmasks?" She muttered under her breath. The uneasy feeling in her stomach overcame her. Turning on her heels, she zipped back into the apartment, her voice just that much more urgent. "Hello?" she asked, half pleading someone would be, "Hello, is anyone here??"

Character Name: Gundam Tanaka
Canon: Super Dangan Ronpa 2
Canon Point: Post Ch-4
Background/History: Plot synopsis.

Okay so Dangan Ronpa is a series that focuses on students who attended Hope's Peak Academy, a really prestigious school for kids with special talents. All the kids in the game have a super high school level title, meaning (or at least, supposed to mean) that they are the best of the best in that talent.

The premise of both the first and second games is that a class of these special students is trapped by some Mastermind represented by a robotic bear who is forcing them to participate in a game of mutual killing. Anyone who kills a fellow student and gets away with it is allowed to leave. Monobear provides special motives to drive the students to killing, and when there is a murder, the students investigate it and have a trial to find the culprit. If they guess right, the culprit is executed; if they guessed wrong, all the other students would be killed and the culprit would go free. The games focus on solving these murders but also on learning the identity of the mastermind and stopping the game.

Gundam Tanaka is a character in the second game, which takes place on a school field trip on an island. Gundam's talent is that he's a SHSL Animal Breeder. He raises and tames animals, mostly domestic ones like dogs/cats/bunnies/chickens and especially hamsters. There really is not very much known about his personal history, since he doesn't bother to share much of it and most of what he does share is filtered through his very weird take on reality. I'll talk a little more about this in his personality section.

Previous Game History: Not really applicable but I will have him remember his last time in Haven. He wasn't here for very long, so he will mainly just remember the setting details he learned to avoid having to rehash everything :)

I will be talking about information that has not come up yet in Oren's LP in his personality section, but all big plot relevant spoiler information will be behind the link.

Non-Spoiler Personality

Gundam is written as just a giant walking shonen cliche. Everything about him from his design to the weird way he talks to his name to the way he describes his abilities and history give off the vibe of a mysterious (and morally ambiguous) magical character who would not be out of place in an anime but who stands out as very very weird even among the quirky Dangan Ronpa cast. This is very intentional and not just as an homage - it's gradually made clear that Gundam has very intentionally styled himself this way. For example, his heterochromia is due to a red contact lens that he wears, and a terrible beast he claims to have fought turns out to have been a Pomeranian. He sometimes uses catchphrases from other series in his dialogue, and he named his hamsters after shonen magazines and talks about them as Dark Gods of Destruction even though they are just really well-trained hamsters.

Although he very frequently talks about his magical adventures, his life actually seems fairly mundane. He has apparently saved several species from extinction and is rumored to talk to animals, but he seems to spend most of his time raising domestic animals and updating his website (an animal blog with a secret hidden wizard blog only a chosen few are able to see, which probably means no one but him reads it). There are times he'll make reference to more mundane things from his past, such as going to an amusement park, his mother's bad cooking, or hiding in the nurses' office to avoid the other kids, but will disguise the story with a comment about an amusement park in hell, deadly poison, or secret child demon summoning rituals. At one point, he refers to taming 'Cerebus, the roc, and dragons' when he is actually referring to dogs, birds, and lizards. All of this just shows that, rather than the badass anime wizard he seems to be, Gundam is really just a kind of awkward, nerdy guy who talks himself up as something he really isn't.

That being said, Gundam's persona can't really be called fake, because there doesn't seem to be any conscious attempt at artifice. It's not exactly obvious if he's really this delusional or if this is just the only way he understands how to explain himself and talk to others (I think it's a little of both with a little attention seeking awkwardness thrown in), but he believes his own persona and does not think he's lying or exaggerating when he adds magical or fantastic elements to his descriptions. For example, he actually seems offended when people think the Four Dark Gods are mere hamsters, but the only time he gives real descriptions of their fearsome powers, he doesn't make anything up but just talks about how hamsters eat their own kin and will fight for territory, both of which are true about hamsters but sound a lot more fearsome and deadly the way he describes it. Even though he does sometimes embellish with details he can't possibly think are true, (at one point, for example, he claims to "hunt men"), if Gundam really was consciously lying he would definitely try to make the Dark Gods seem more powerful. Instead he just shows that he has a very bizarre filter through which he views the world, and although he might sometimes intentionally make things up to seem impressive, he also thinks claiming he hunts men and tames dragons are the kinds of white lies people will believe.

The way Gundam presents himself and the way he views himself (though not exactly who he really is) is somewhere between villain and anti-hero. He's mysterious, powerful, and not human; later he reveals that he believes he's the son of an angel and a demon. He has tamed creatures of great power and knows magic spells. He is hateful towards humans and looks down on them as unworthy of his presence, though he can respect those who can present a challenge to him. He plans to take over the world, and his name is spoken with dread in arcane circles. Still, even though he is villainous and demonic, he lives by his own code of honor. He would never act cowardly or back down from a challenge.

None of this is really how he comes off to others - instead he just seems kind of insane. For a lot of the game, especially early on, he's sort of off in his own bizarre little world, claiming he's going to tame Monobear and smoke a cigar over his corpse or spending the entire time everyone else is solving a murder looking for an earring because the world will end if he doesn't find it. He seems disconnected from reality to a degree that he isn't even focusing on the actually terrifying and horrible things happening around them. On the other hand, he shows that there's more going on beneath the surface - when Sonia compliments his hamsters, he drops the persona because he's flattered to the point of being completely flustered. He seems to agree that they are really cute and cuteness is an important quality in animals despite acting like they're demon lords. He also shows that he does want to be included in the group - at one point, he follows the protagonist out with another character insisting on three different occasions that he knows they have plans but doesn't want to be asked to come because he prefers solitude. Even though he thinks he's being taken at face value, it's obvious to everyone that he just wants to be included but won't ask.

The truth is that Gundam is an awkward and lonely person. Although he thinks he's successfully hidden his desire for companionship, he's actually pretty pathetically obvious about how much he wants to make friends. The problem is, for reasons that are never really specifically explored, he's very afraid of rejection and betrayal. In one of his free time events, he expresses that part of why he loves animals is that "anything that speaks will betray you," and when Hinata says he won't betray him, he's extremely pleased but also disbelieving. He constantly asks Hinata why he dares to approach him, and gradually this stops seeming like posturing and more disbelief that someone would be interested in trying to get to know him. He also seems to have issues with touch, claiming he avoids touching people because he is poison due to eating his mother's bad cooking as a child; he's always careful to pull away or back up when anyone approaches him.

Gundam also reveals a side that is incredibly gentle and caring, especially when it comes to animals. Hinata remarks at one point that he becomes visibly warmer and seems more truthful when talking about them. Even though he claims his SHSL talent is a front for his dark magic activities, he's very very passionate when it comes to taking care of animals. His favorite food is pumpkin seeds because he can feed his hamsters with them, and he's able to talk at great length about different hamster species and how with the right breeding, incredible color combinations are possible.

His technique with animals, though, is really just based in kindness and compassion for them. When he reveals his actual methods, he isn't capable of talking to animals exactly. What he does is put them at ease (he tells Hinata he has a magic chant to calm animals that goes "Shh, it's all right, you're okay, it's okay"), and once they know he isn't a threat, learns about them and whether they like being handled or what they like and dislike. His empathy with animals and ability to communicate his own benign intentions is strong enough that it's like he's speaking to them directly.

He is very passionate about protecting animals, and sees protecting them as an important duty he has. When he expresses disappointment that there are no new animals to tame on the island, Hinata suggests the cows in the petting zoo, but Gundam says he isn't interested in livestock. His reason isn't that he dislikes them or thinks they aren't cute, but that he knows livestock were born to be killed for food, and the knowledge that their lives are like that and he can't do anything to help them is too painful for him. He's also constantly expressing worry and anxiety about whether his animals at home are safe and who would take care of his hamsters if something happened to him. In one of his free times, when he teaches Hinata about the hamsters and how to take care of them, it seems like he's hoping to discover someone he considers capable of caring for them if he's gone.

Abilities/Powers: He has no magical/supernatural powers, although he claims to have whatever kind of bullshit powers you can think of making up. He's apparently a decent physical fighter.

His only actual ability is with animals. He's regarded as a prodigy with them, and is so good at handling them that people think he can talk to them. His hamsters are trained well enough that they not only understand very specific commands he gives, but are conscious of things happening around them (or at least able to understand Gundam's own emotions) and are able to find things he's looking for, like secret passageways, and alert him to them.

The hamsters are:

"Steel Red Elephant" Maga-G : Fierce little guy with a torn ear.
"Star Destroyer Grey Fox" Sun-D: Happy girl hamster with the brownish red spots.
"Invading Black Dragon" Cham-P: Big fat hamster.
"Mirage Silver Falcon" Jum-P: Sleepy hamster.

Items/Weapons: 1. His four hamsters! 2. Hamster care taking essentials. Cage/exercise ball/sunflower seeds/bedding

Sample Entry: Here

Sample Entry Two: It was, at last, the arrival of the foul day foretold in prophesy, the day the true fury of the Dark Gods of Destruction would awake, as one, and seek vengeance on a doomed and pestilent land. Creatures kin to the mighty hamster tribes, those possessing fine and fluffy coats, may suffice to remain self-sufficient in the art of grooming, yet on occasion even these powerful beings become inundated by refuse too intractable for even their artful tongues. Bedding, food residue, the viscera of vanquished foes, and other such inevitabilities of life encrust in the fur of the tiny deities, rendering it limp and lifeless. Gundam Tanaka was accustomed to such inevitabilities, and has grown to learn the proper handling to clean one of the dark ones in holy water simply to wash away the accumulations of unspeakable debris.

Yet on this day, a more dire situation presented itself. Cleverly escaping from their captive bonds in the safety of their cage, the Four Dark Gods found themselves getting into the kitchen and becoming covered in sticky food. Traditional methods of cleaning would fail in the face of the fruits of their conquest. This grim predicament meant no less than that all four would require a bath at once. Knowing any attempts to protect his body against the fury of these beasts when submerged in water would be futile, Tanaka forewent rubber gloves, as they would only anger the beasts. He carried them to the sink, where he cast a soothing chant to attempt to battle their savagery, and then scrubbed at them with a washcloth inoculated against demonic energy.

Silent Jum-P fell fastest, succumbing to the scrubbing, lulled to sleep by the chant. He knew resistance against the inevitable would be as foolish as casting his odds against the Fates themselves. Sun-D put up minimal fight. She nipped at Tanaka's hands, drawing blood as a warning, but then looked upon Jum-P's surrender and knew the face of futility. The fury of Maga-G, however, could not be quelled. Sensing weakness upon Tanaka's pause to rinse blood from his thumb, he leapt from the battlefield and scurried into the gap between sink and wall.

"Maga-G, you dishonor yourself and your kin," Tanaka muttered, clenching his shampoo covered fists. "If you seek to challenge me, then return and fight!" Drawing upon arcane knowledge, he lowered himself to the chosen lair of the dark creature, and extended his palm to convey a sacrifice to the Gods: a feast of sunflower seeds. Powerless in the face of the sacrificial spell, Maga-G was lured into the palm and to the fate he sought to refuse, the inevitability of the washcloth.

At last, nearly all the Gods had fallen…save the dreaded elephant, beast destined to swallow madness: horrible Cham-P! The largest of the Gods, ghastly Cham-P possessed too much pride and girth to flee. He stood fast and twitched his nose in brazen challenge. The accrue of sugar on his fur was formidable; barely a hair of the terrifying mighty beast was clean of it. Yet Tanaka's will could not be swayed. He met Cham-P's audacious stare with his own undaunted glower, and swiped at him in warning. Cham-P recognized the truth of his foe, and raised himself to his hind legs, revealing his massive final form.

"Huhuhuhu…" Tanaka cackled lowly, knowing the beast believed himself victorious, without knowing he had played directly into his own undoing. In a swift motion, he turned on the faucet. With belly bared, the water washed over Cham-P, cleansing him of his filth. Too distracted by the cascade subsuming him, he did not have time to anticipate the arrival of the washcloth.

Now each of the Dark Gods were at last free of grime. Tanaka wrapped around them a towel to restrict their movements and dry them, savoring the taste of victory at last.

Personality:

Riley is, at her core, a fighter. She fights for her safety, for the safety of others, and for a way to find freedom from the harsh ways of life in post-apocalyptic America, all while trying to keep a positive outlook on a life that, quite frankly, sucks. She's someone who doesn't take shit, and is willing to give up almost everything to fight for something better via the Fireflies and their goal to restore America's government and alleviate military rule. She's the kind of person that sticks up for those who are in trouble or aren't there to defend their name. Riley interfered when Ellie was being bullied on her first day of school, and shuts down one of the other kids when they insult the fireflies, claiming they don't have all the information so they couldn't know one way or the other if they'd become too radical. She's got a heart, that's for sure, but that doesn't mean she's a saint. She's not even close to being one.

Her world is a smear of moral ambiguity, and in order to survive one has to forgo being good and honest, and Riley? She's very much a product of this environment. Despite her empathy towards those in trouble, she still steals without a second thought, and she had to kill her father in order to survive. So really, she's as morally gray as the world around her. She has to be or she wouldn't be able to survive in a place that consists of nothing but obstacles and danger.

Even so, Riley dreams of a freedom that doesn't exist in the apocalypse. She doesn't want to be military, and she doesn't want to end up among the common citizens in the Quarantine Zone either, because they don't get enough rations and aren't treated well at all. Which leaves her two options; try to survive outside the quarantine zones, an option she doesn't really hold in high regards, or join up with the fireflies and fight for the possibility of a future. So joining the Fireflies becomes her goal, what she works her hardest towards. She memorizes their charter, and plans to hunt them down and join them no matter the costs.

There's one thing that grows to be more important to her than her dreams of becoming a firefly, however, and that's her relationship with Ellie. It's heavily implied that the reason she left military school so suddenly and without warning wasn't just to join the fireflies, but also because of her growing feelings for her friend. Yet even so, she comes back (against orders, mind) and tries to rekindle their relationship and make amends before she's relocated to another city. She values what she has with Ellie so much that she's willing to give up on being a firefly to stay with her.

Riley I someone that's strong in the face of danger. She's the kind of person to take on a problem head on and worry about the consequences and after-affects once the situation's over. And even in the face of Death, she manages to keep a level head, weighing her options carefully. It's not that she isn't afraid, she just doesn't let it bog her down, and even after she's bitten, even once she's forced with the reality that she's infected and going to die, she deals with it calmly. Because that's how it is, and freaking out won't change that.

Despite all this, and the environment she's forced to grow up in, Riley is still very much a teenager. She sneaks out, goofs around, is sarcastic, rude, and can be very brash, making bad decisions that endanger not only her but her best friend. Riley's reality is a bleak one, but despite that she does her best to look for the little things in life and have some fun while she can.

Abilities/Powers:

Growing up after the zombie apocalypse has a few advantages. It means that Riley knows how to fend for herself, and knows how to survive in a very harsh, unforgiving environment. She can shoot a gun, scavenge, and knows how to be stealthy when she needs to be.

Unfortunately, however, Riley is just a 15 year old girl. She doesn't have any super powers, so if she's taken by surprise by someone bigger and/or stronger than her, she's done for. She also has a tendency to make impulsive decisions that result in her and Ellie ending up in rather dangerous situations, and it's her decision to continue on through the mall and then blare music on a stereo system that gets them infected. Sooo yeah, not the best decision maker in the world.

Sample Entry Two:

How many hours did they have left, before the infection would overtake their minds? How much time until they were no longer human? The questions spiral through her mind as she rubs her bitten hand against her jeans, as though maybe the friction would rub away the problem and her concerns. It won't, she knows that. But even so she wants to focus her mind on something else, on Ellie and making their last moments count for something, but she can't seem to shake the questions as they pick through the parts of the mall they've never been to before now.

Would it hurt? Would she feel it?

Riley turns back to Ellie, eyes locking onto her friend's arm and the bit-mark gouged into it. Guilt slams the breath out of her, and for a moment she can't do anything but stare, shoulders hunching slightly, her arms lying loose at her sides. She wants to apologize, but I'm sorry isn't good enough. It sure as hell won't fix anything. God, if they had just gone back when Ellie first asked to, if she had just left things alone, then maybe—Riley pushes the gut-wrenching thoughts as far away as she can and puts on a big smile. She threads her fingers through Ellie's, pulling her along down the winding rows of shops long abandoned and overrun with greenery.

“Come on, let's go have some fun.”

Not being able to see how much time she has left doesn't stop the seconds, minutes, hours from ticking down. So she decides she isn't going to let the fear coiled at the bottom of her stomach win. No, she's going to make sure that every moment she and Ellie have left counts. She's going to make sure that their last memories are good ones, no matter what.

[personal profile] flugel 2014-02-26 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
Personality:

Let’s think of descriptors that you’d use to illustrate someone that’s known, in large, as humanity’s last bastion against annihilation—words like “heroic”, “upright”, “steadfast”, “charismatic”, “fearless”, and “strong” come to mind, and they’d all be applicable to the man we’re about to describe, but with a heavy disclaimer: those things are only a fraction of the components that comprise Levi, and romanticizing him is entirely inappropriate given the context of his world setting, how hollow it rings when his sung praise is mounted on a literal wall of the dead. Tangentially, the act of romanticizing Levi is hilariously misplaced if you step back for a moment and examine the fact that he’s a tiny man in his thirties whose favorite household item is probably his bottle of Windex, who wears a cravat as an accessory for his uniform for no reason, and who inexplicably likes to make deadpan shit jokes at inopportune times.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves! First things first.

There is, yes, a disconnect between what people know about Captain Levi of the Survey Corps, and the actual Captain Levi himself. In a world as bleak as the one that’s described in Attack on Titan, it’s not too hard to imagine why the remaining population of the human race would be emotionally bolstered by the existence of a man who can face giants and come back to talk about it. The name of the game, if you’ve enlisted in the Survey Corps, is survival, so anyone that can go back and forth between the walls separating humans from certain death with more than a few titans kills under his or her belt each time is, admittedly, someone to be commended. Something like that becomes symbolic, a testament to the fortitude of the human race, and consequently, that’s what Levi carries on his shoulders every time he rides out on another scouting mission, every time he contributes to the ‘eventual triumph of humanity’, one mission at a time.

Idolatry ill-suits him, though. Levi is a fighter and realist, and while his first appearance has him promising a dying soldier that he’ll fight the titans until his last breath, his response to sincere admiration from children is a rather cold: “someone shut those brats up”. He isn’t much in the PDA department, despite his tireless work as humanity’s strongest—calling him “not much of a handshakes and smiles person” would be the understatement of the century. There are people who do public relations, and then there’s… Levi. Prickly and distant and entirely pragmatic, he’s uninterested in catering to the expectations that his illustrious record saddles him with, but not out of a lack of empathy or for lack of caring. But we’ll get into that later.

Getting things done is, at the heart of it, extremely important to our Captain. A man who spent a majority of his life underground and slumming it, Levi approaches life through the lens of harsh reality: there’s nothing extravagant about what he does, even with all the verbal trophies he gets from oblivious civilians, and Levi is abundantly aware of that. People die around him all the time, so the best way to treat the soldiers around him is with straightforwardness and biting ruthlessness. In short, Levi is the master of realtalk, and he’s not afraid to sit you down and call you a piece of shit if he feels like you’re wholly deserving of said illustrious title. He’s an exemplary soldier because he takes orders well (read: obeys them without question, as long as he trusts the person giving it, aka Erwin Smith), resilient against pressure, and employs sensibility before empathy—all of these things cultivated through circumstance. The important thing to note here, though, is that despite his sky-high expectations and his insistence that people nut up or shut up, Levi adheres to his own self-imposed strictness with the same level of austerity that he displays to his subordinates, which is consequently why his small circle of acquaintances respect him in the first place. Entirely no-nonsense and crass to boot, Levi is…difficult, which is a generous assessment of his social skills (read: poor).

But even with his filthy mouth and terrible toilet humor (take a shot every time he mentions constipation to Hange), his insensitivity is a front for his honesty, and his detached, blasé confidence is another front for his feelings of responsibility towards the people that are under his direct supervision. Levi, in the shortest terms, Cares, and while that usually manifests in weird and questionable responses—publicly beating up a teenager for the sake of not getting him executed, for one—he’s invested in humanity to a degree that’s significantly more than “well, I have this job, so I have to do it”. His respect doesn’t extend too generously, of course, being the kind of man that he is, but his general regard for human life hilariously contradicts how rude he is to people 90% of the time. He can’t abide by the bigwigs and rich “pigs” that sit around and think they can tell him and his men to go die, and openly shows disdain for the Military Police, who he finds painfully inadept. But when he sympathizes with people—even if he knows that there’s no point, in the end—he feels for them, as hesitant and clumsy as he is at showing it, as flatly and directly as he can manage to convey it. He places trust in the people that have followed him through thick and thin, never undervalues or underestimates what it takes for those same people to suppress their humanity in the face of overwhelming trials, and is silently crushed when they all die under his command. He’s come to terms with the fact that the world is cruel (hello, series catchphrase), and the fact that titans rip through people as easily as a paper shredder rips through files, but that doesn’t stop him from grieving, even if he only allows it of himself for a moment. Sympathy doesn’t save lives, nor do tears—Levi expresses the former without much tact and never shows the latter, but his eccentricities are universally understood by those around him.

So, really, the idea of necessity is vital to Levi. Necessity saves people, much like discipline and restraint. Knowing too many instances where emotions have gotten people killed has done away with any dormant shyness that may or may not have existed (up for debate) about berating people for following their heart before their head, and Levi knows that necessity is how he saves lives. Following the mission and following orders is a way to ensure the safety of at least one life, even at the expense of scores of others, and this is precisely why he’s loyal to his commanding officer, Erwin Smith. Levi knows that Erwin is someone who can cast aside their own humanity and sacrifice their own nights of quiet sleep in order to fulfill their given duty, and if there's one thing that Levi can respect, it's that. (Even if Erwin fucking scares him sometimes, because seriously, that guy.)

Other defining traits involve Levi’s expert ability to goad, to rile, to negotiate with ferocious audacity—if there’s one thing that Levi lacks, it’s propriety, and he lacks it with such confidence that it goes full circle to being weirdly convincing. He’s whip-smart but darkly humorous about it, condescends in expert deadpan, is hard to read; sometimes, people who are more familiar with his personality have to jump in and explain what Levi really means when he says something, much to his palpable annoyance.

In summary: there’s no denying that Levi isn’t exactly the conventional knight in shining armor that people might want him to be (though, ok, does anyone actually want him to be is a good question to ask). Firstly, he’s far too short—standing at an impressive approximation of 5’2”, he doesn’t cut too impressive of a figure—and secondly, he’s bitingly sarcastic, offhandedly threatening, unflappably abrasive, and a clean freak to boot. His loathing of titans is real, and there’s no denying that he will, in fact, fight enemies of humanity with his last breath, but he’d also say that that doesn’t deserve any lofty labels—because seriously, if you try to patronize him with that kind of thing, he’d tell you straight up to shut the fuck up.

Abilities/Powers:

While Levi doesn't have any actual supernatural powers, he has at least a decade or two of intense training under his belt. He's extremely skilled in aerial combat through the use of gas-powered propulsion gear, wires, and grappling hooks-- it can be said that he's in his element when he's flying through the sky. He has an expert sense of three-dimensional spacial relativity, has an amazing reaction time to most external stimuli (he's survived 'surprise bungee jumping' tests where his test administrators purposely cut his cord, seriously), and is agile to the point that people cite him as being difficult to keep track of with the naked eye when he's really doing his thing. Precision is also a strong suit of his, since he can accurately pinpoint the exact spot on the nape of a titan's neck that'll deal fatal damage, and slice that spot every single time without fail.

It's really not an exaggeration when people say that Levi is worth an entire battalion of men. He really pulls his weight!!

His 3DMG, gas canisters, and his blade sheath.

Sample Entry:
Thread from my last stay in Haven, let me know if the thread is too old and I’ll write up another sample!

Sample Entry Two:
(( OOC note: this is a recycled sample pre-Haven. ))

Levi literally has no idea what this thing is.

It's not that he considers his knowledge of machinery primitive, no-- his daily routine necessitates a familiarity with a machine that allows him to soar through the sky in bursts of cloud and gas and jet, which he doesn't exactly consider primitive-- it's just that he has no idea what this thing entails, and every inquiry he's made as to the function of the device has given him some sort of nonsense about 'phones' and how 'everyone uses one'.

Entirely unhelpful. But then again, this entire experience is nothing short of a headache, so he hasn't set the bar very high to begin with.

He fiddles with the functions, hesitates pushing the green button for 'call' (what is he supposed to be calling?), puzzles over the small print that labels another button as 'video'. Distrust is something that comes easily to him, especially when it deals with the unknown: being careful and knowing when or when not to tamper with any given object or situation is what's kept his head on his shoulders for this long, after all.

So he stares. The mattress springs of the bed he's found himself on creaks softly under his weight, a subtle reminder of the fact that this is real-- Levi doesn't particularly feel anything about that except for a lingering sense of urgency (he was in the middle of something), a distant knowing that he's already tired of being displaced.

He'd rather be killing titans, he thinks, as he grinds the 'call' button of his phone with his thumb.

Let them come. Whatever he's calling, he'll answer tenfold.

Personality:
In some ways, Sebastian seems to personify everything you'd imagine about the Faustian demon. He's handsome, charming, and sly, able to easily manipulate and lead people as he wishes. He's ruthless and quite clearly considers humans nothing more than something that exists for his amusement and meals. But at the same time... He's also a very odd demon. While he may be suave and charming, on the other hand, he's also a borderline neurotic perfectionist that takes the duties of a butler very seriously and loves cats enough to keep thirteen of them in a closet to save them from being outside. He may be a demon, but he's not exactly the cool, flawless being that he may seem to be.

But to give him credit, Sebastian is bound by a contract, and that contract is a big driving force for his activities. In Kuroshitsuji, if a human summons a demon, they're able to form a contract with the demon—the demon will serve the human to its full capacity and do anything the contractor wishes, but at a cost. The demon will eventually eat his human contractor's soul. In Sebastian's case, his contractor is a young nobleman named Ciel Phantomhive that made a contract both to save himself and out of a want for revenge against the people that killed his family. This revenge drives Ciel, and thus, it drives Sebastian in turn. But Ciel is a wise boy, so there are certain terms that bind Sebastian:
1. To protect and never betray Ciel.
2. To obey his orders no matter what.
3. To never lie.
While most of these terms only apply to Ciel in terms of how they can influence Sebastian, they still carry a great influence otherwise, since some of the orders that Ciel has given have shaped Sebastian. For example, Sebastian's perfectionism, especially as it relates to his duties as a butler, comes from Ciel's rather harsh enforcement of term number two. While Sebastian does seem to innately just take some sort of pleasure in doing things over the top and making things as perfect as possible, Ciel only made it worse by insisting that Sebastian do things by hand. With Sebastian's abilities, he's able to simply create meals, tidy things up, or anything else that would be asked of him without so much as lifting a finger, but because Ciel insisted that he take the effort to do them by hand, he must. Ciel may have high standards for what he expects from Sebastian, but some of this is just a part of Sebastian's character, too. He does things to the best of his ability, and gets annoyed when things don't go exactly as planned, though he goes to great lengths still make sure they're as perfect as possible.

But even beyond that, Sebastian also just tends to think of accomplishing things in unusual, often overly elaborate ways. Some examples include arson to find a missing person, elaborately faking his own death for the sake of incriminating a someone, and creating about twenty different varieties of curry for the sake of winning a curry competition. He's quietly eccentric, in a way, since the ways he thinks to do things are just strange, and the amount of effort they require makes it seem even stranger that he would go through it all for the sake of one (apparently very good) meal.

But that's also easily attributed to the idea that Sebastian is difficult to think of in terms of human ideals and morality. He is a demon, and therefore simply doesn't understand or isn't subject to some human emotions. Materialism is meaningless to him, and the only things he seems to care about (other than cats) are more in terms of the annoyance of replacing them if they get ruined rather than any actual value he places on them. The idea of friendship is foreign to him, and while others may regard him as a friend, it's not a sentiment that's returned. His "friendship" is something purely manipulative, just another proverbial chess piece that can be used to some end. Even crying baffles him, because it's just something foreign to a demon.

But even with his distant view of humanity, it's clearly convincing enough for people to like him and to not suspect that he's anything but a refined, stoic butler. Despite not being human and not being subject to many of their emotions, he enjoys observing them and finds them entertaining, clearly enough to be able to imitate it. He's friendly and charming, and even appears to be generous at times, but that too is usually a manipulative gesture. He can be playful and enthusiastic, in every part seeming to be a butler that truly enjoys and takes pleasure in doing his work and doing it well. Yet everything is in terms of how it could be useful to him (or Ciel), so he's more than happy to play the part he's been given. To anyone that doesn't know that he's a demon, he's pleasant, if a bit distant and stoic. To those that do, he's much more open with the fact that he only does things for the sake of some eventual goal and doesn't seem to like it when people imply otherwise.

He's certainly an unusual, eccentric demon, but Sebastian is a demon nonetheless. He's manipulative and downright cruel, and certainly extremely dangerous, should he feel the need to be. Yet luckily, this is something that very rarely gets shown at all. For the sake of one, excellent meal, Sebastian plays the part of a human well as a charmingly eccentric butler who is absolutely devoted to his young master.

To put it quite simply, Sebastian is one hell of a butler.
