In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

Personality: Ali al-Saachez is a despicable man. Self-proclaimed warmonger, mercenary and former leader of the terrorist organization KPSA, he is a skilled fighter with very little moral value to back it up. For the sake of war, he is not above killing, enacting terrorism, harnessing the use of brainwashed child soldiers, exploiting others' religious beliefs, or changing his name, appearance and behavior. A recurring theme in season 1 are Setsuna F. Seiei's allusions to Ali's Divine Crusade, referring to propaganda that he instilled in the Republic of Krugis for the sake of the battle with Azadistan. He claimed they fought in the name of God as leverage, when in reality, the only god inside of him was a love for battle. War is his core motivation and interest, and all stems from there and revolves around it. Thus, it's where I'll begin.

In 2307 AD, humanity began a twenty year-long war over the sale of quickly diminishing fossil fuels. Dubbed the Solar War, Ali al-Saachez participated in this war, detailed briefly in one of the prequel graphic novels, Gundam 00P. Thereafter, he is with a group of radicals, a third party among the supporters and conservatives who oppose the use of solar power in Azadistan. Said group is responsible for kidnapping Azadistan's religious leader Massoud Rachmadi. A character in another part of the series of prequels, Gundam 00F, speculates that "somebody wants to start a civil war, so he's pitting the two factions against each other." This is just the first taste of what Ali as a person is like. He's hellbent on provoking feuding nations into battle to get a bit of action for himself and will go to any length it takes to get just that. His interest in the Gundams is great as is his skill with them, and many of his assignments consist of capturing enemy Gundams because of this. You could easily say that operating weaponry, strategizing on war, and how to battle are abilities imbued in Ali from birth.

Prior to his time in Azadistan and Moralia, Ali situated his terrorist group in the Republic of Krugis. By 2301, Krugis was decimated by war. Ali's anti-government guerrilla forces fought Azadistan, but the catch is that the majority of his organization was made up of child soldiers. Just 24 at the time, Ali presented himself as a messenger of God and gained the trust of children in Krugis, convincing many of them to kill their parents to prove their devotion to him, KPSA, and God. This behavior is indicative enough of his personal morals, but additionally, his skill in deception and his intelligence are made clear cut. Not only did Ali know exactly how to take advantage of war torn Krugis, he successfully strategized battles involving, more often than not, only himself and children. Granted, his methods surely consisted of using the children to his own benefit, as either diversions or even shields. It also shows a certain inability to interact with and manipulate his own peers, which he improves upon in later exploits. He also later disguises himself as Gary Biaggi under orders as a mercenary, successfully deceiving the AEU.

The obstacles were too large, which Ali likely knew from the start, for Krugis to regain power from Azadistan. With the country's defeat, Ali took up mercenary work working for the private military companies in an unstated South African country, and then in Moralia. This takes place during the first season of the anime series, the following conflict in Azadistan serving as one of the two major points of conflict in the story. His activity during this time continues to display the same ruthless, war-hungry behavior. There isn't a single moment that he displays concern for anyone but himself. His statements about the economy in Moralia about what "happens to us on the bottom," for example, show recognition for the poor condition of the country but ultimately serve no one but himself and maybe his mercenary group if you squint.

On the other hand, while he's offered the money to live comfortably for the rest of his life if he captures a Gundam in Moralia, Ali's appreciation for the financial bonus appears mainly to be a flimsy cover for what he really cares about—and that's battle. That isn't to say he doesn't care about money at all. On the contrary, it's certain that he would be pleased with the more valuable benefits of his work. But "living comfortably" is the last thing that Ali wants.

He says "money only matters if you're alive" after telling the rest of his forces to hide during his battle with Gundam Exia, which may point to compassion, but is more likely only fulfillment of his job as their captain and the desire to battle with Exia one-on-one. Though Ali shaped main character Setsuna F. Seiei's young life, his recognition for this is naught. The same can be said for the Gundam 00F character, Fon Spaak and the rest of the children he trained in Krugis. When he meets Setsuna again, he doesn't even remember his name. His recognition is for his way of fighting. The meeting does, however, stay with him, but only for the sake of taking him on again in battle. As with Setsuna, Ali neglects to form any meaningful relationships, be those positive or negative in nature. He has no respect for human life and takes his own as a series of opportunities.

Neil and Lyle Dylandy have dubbed him a "monster," the rest of their family killed by him in a suicide bombing (and later Neil, more directly). Ali himself rebuts that with claims of their hypocrisy, saying that Celestial Being are terrorists that are no different from him but use the face of eradicating war to justify themselves. Given this, he has a full understanding of how despicable he is but does not attempt to justify it. His methods are exceedingly straightforward, aimed solely at a singular goal that he never looks away from. In episode 20 of the first season, he says to Kinue Crossroad whom he later kills, "I'm a warmonger. I can't help it. I love everything about war. I live and die for humanity's most primitive impulse. I'm the lowest and worst kind of person." It speaks for itself.

Still, I think it's important to remember that even a guy like him had to have origins. That's not to say that he has any features that could possibly redeem him, but for the sake of understanding where a "monster" like him came from, it's worth looking into. It's even hinted that Ali al-Saachez is not his real name. For the sake of avoiding delving too deep into headcanon territory, I'll just say this—the factors that shaped him likely involve exposure to an extreme and violent subculture from a young age just like the children in Krugis whom he manipulates into fighting for him. As a result, it should be recognized that some part of him has familiarity with being "on the bottom" and that, even though his life revolves around chasing war and he's now freely able to use that familiarity for exploitation, a lesser part of him carries that as a long cold remnant of his past. That being said, the recognition of this goes hand and hand with the understanding that he holds no sentimentalities. If he ever felt the need to fight personal injustice, he no longer does.

Also notable is his focus towards the same goal, without diverting to other acts of violence needlessly. Ali values war and battle but he's not ignorant enough nor is he interested in going on a killing spree. What he cares about is quality battle, and he will spare lives that don't come into conflict with this goal. War is impersonal for him, as is everything else. While those who die and are affected by his terrible actions have little to no bearing on him, he does not seek to affect them just for the sake of it. They're only casualties of what is necessary. For example, during his stint as Gary Biaggi, a request he makes to Laguna Harvey to be a GN-X pilot is denied and while this undoubtedly makes him angry, the string of killings he commits thereafter would have been avoided if he had been granted his request. It's by no means a justifiable excuse but it's the way Ali works and he never strays from this twisted logic. On the opposite end of this logic, he expresses hollow sympathy for the Trinities before he kills two of them, because they are simply cogs in the machine.

Ali is not outwardly hostile unless provoked but is brutish and unyielding with regard to his motivations. He will unashamedly speak his opinions and will aggressively dominate a conversation to seize whatever it is he wants out of it. Because of his brash way of behaving, he has conflicts with most that he meets. Insulting people at will is nothing to him and an argument can easily lead to a physical altercation. Men and women receive similar treatment, but occasional lecherous commentary is reserved for the women. He shows insight into the situation around him, be it economical strife or widespread prejudice, but generally appears to have little opinion of his own other than a tendency to berate weaker forces and will halfheartedly throw out insensitive remarks to provoke others. All in all, Ali is aggressive in all forms of interaction, and quick to start a fight. There is little he is personally invested in besides himself.

Though he tends to act wildly, Ali is not incapable of keeping himself in check, but he does so when it suits his needs because it appears to be irritating and tiring for him to keep up a "nice" act. In the case that he needs to front, he's capable of posing as friendly, kind, and even competent but it is not an act that can withstand much pressure. As with his Gary Biaggi cover, for example, he successfully deceives the AEU members he interacts with for the sake of retaining equipment and participating in battle. However, the act can, at times, appear rather mocking and behind others' backs, he displays anger that eventually culminates into acting against orders. With this, it's clear that Ali cannot and will not keep up an act long before he's back to his old ways. And as for those ways, he remains extremely self-centered and a tad more reasonably egotistical. Other people have little value to him. Of interest to him are only those he uses to get paid, those that can serve as entertainment, and those that he can consider rivals worthy of fighting. For the most part, he's a loner who works best on his own because he's so hard to deal with, and throughout the series and presumably his entire life, he establishes no real emotional bonds.

To sum it up, Ali al-Saachez is exactly what he claims to be: a warmonger. He lives and, eventually, dies seeking out war as the source of his livelihood. For the terrible crimes he has committed without remorse he offers no justification, fully embracing his reprehensible desires and the image that comes with it.

Abilities/Powers: No supernatural abilities. As he has a long history with work as a mercenary, guerrilla fighter and mobile suit pilot, Ali is highly versed in many different types of combat. While he is considered most lethal in close quarters or hand-to-hand combat, he is also capable in long range combat, weaponry, and so on. The actual origin of his various forms of combat mastery is not spoken of in canon, so it's hard to say what sort of style one could attribute his fighting to, but it's logical to assume that he's experienced in many types because of his background, so they likely blend together. He is more than decently competent with the weapon-related technology of his era (23rd century), but this does not follow on a strictly mechanical basis or in many fields beyond weaponry.

Items/Weapons: A handgun (similar to a Desert Eagle in model, but slightly more advanced in terms of accuracy/recoil à la 23rd century technology), spare ammo and a half-full flask of araq.

Sample Entry Two: It doesn't hurt anymore, where his burn scars have healed, gnarly patterns of disfigured flesh in their wake. Ali peels off the bandages bit by bit, looking at something more normal for the first time since Dynames had shot him down. He doesn't know why this change in scenery has restored his body to this state. The hospital staff he'd been treated by at the grace of the UN had assured him that a full recovery would take many months, and though he'd relented that he would take half that time, even the dull buzz of the liquor he snuck in wasn't enough to make such quick progress overnight.

He stretches and flexes the muscles of his arms from the bottom bunk of the apartment he'd arrived in, the discarded bandages forming a pile at his feet. This place is ugly, dirty, worn like the base camps he'd hidden out in during the war in Krugis. But there are things here—there are personal items, clothing, things like that, all scattered about. The cellphone he'd discovered also had a list of faces without names. In short, there were other people here and the ones that lived here would definitely show up soon, which means that he doesn't need to glean an explanation from a stranger in desperation right off the bat. Something will come of the lived-in look of this apartment, and in the meantime, he'll figure out what he can on his own.

The healed injuries are a bonus, a means for him to go exploring what's outside. With a gun that he'd procured in Moralia provided for him here, he doesn't sense that he'll struggle to get by, but that's only a feeling. With battle experience heavy on his back, he's instilled with confidence that persists against the dreary living space and what he discovers to be a city in disrepair. Keeping his weapon handy, he smiles without inhibition into the dark of a crumbling stairwell. Slight noises keep him on the alert.

"Hello? Anybody there?" His voice is disarmingly cheerful. As he makes his way up the stairs, he's eager to discover what might be waiting for him on the floor above.

Personality:
Heine is, to put it simply, a jerk. He's rude to everyone, with very few exceptions, and he's not even the kind of jerk with a heart made of a gold. He puts intent behind every insult, though they amount of actual interest varies. He's apathetic, unsympathetic, and can be passively cruel. He would have walked past Nill if he hadn't noticed her wings, and even then he's reluctant to get close. People who try to become even casual acquaintances are usually insulted or ignored until they leave, and the people who try to get any closer have to deal with the same, even after or if they gain his trust. His attitude stems from both the results of the few times he placed his loyalties in one person or another during his time in the laboratory, and the harsh city in which he lives.

Because he's so hard to approach, the few who do make it past his barrier (more like general atmosphere) of prickliness are stuck inside it forever. Or at least until they do something really stupid. Heine does, in his own way, care about people. He just shows it by trying to take care of them without actually telling them that he's okay with them or anything remotely resembling communication. Then again, if he actually has some sort of emotional investment in their wellbeing, then it's likely they can tell what he won't say (e.g. Nill, who can communicate with him better than almost anyone, through verbally one-sided conversation).

Outside of his tiny, tiny circle of at-least amiable contacts, Heine is... well, not friendly. He hates the thought of being controlled, another effect of his past, and is liable to lash out at anyone who tries to restrain him. Being pitied or patronized is nearly as bad, because he has his own sense of pride — he knows he's pathetic in comparison to what Einsturzen wanted of him and what he thought he was destined to be, but he accepts it because it's still better than being under the mastery of anyone but himself. Heine is well aware of his situation and doesn't make the best of it, but he recognizes that it matches his temperament more than being contained.

In addition to just being flat-out rude, Heine is also, as mentioned, not nice. Not even on the inside. Nill is the only one who gets the slightest genuine smile from him, and that's partially because she reminds him of Lily, who was his anchor in the past. He would have ignored Nill if he hadn't noticed that she was genetically screwed up like he was, and it's likely that he wouldn't have regretted it either. He's a mercenary; he doesn't care about who he shoots, maims, and/or kills so long as it doesn't take too long, no one he kind-of-sort-of likes doesn't die, and he gets paid.

He does have a sense of humor, if terrible (Requiem for a Dream should not be remembered with an amused smile), that shows up at the most morbid of times. The 'black dog' or persona of the Kerberos spine is equally awful and markedly more vulgar and sexual, considering Heine's gynophobia. The 'black dog' is constantly bloodthirsty and almost hungry, advocating disemboweling evisceration, and general violence at pretty much all times. More concerning, maybe, is the fact that Heine sometimes agrees with it.

Abilities/Powers:
Basic combat enhancements: speed and strength increased, regeneration, able to grow back body parts and probably revive from cardiac arrest and the like. He's able to crush concrete and literally spit out bullets after getting shot up, though his actual techniques and skill aren't anything special. All of his abilities come from the Cerberus Spine.
Items/Weapons:
His pistols (Mauser C96 and Luger P08) and some ammunition.

I'm not much of a dog person. [ The phone is aimed at himself, but he turns it around with a dizzying swing to show the ground where there's the corpse of a Double Head, along with the splattered remains of something else. ]

[ Heine turns the phone back around, shrugs slightly and rubs the back of his neck. He has an itchy trigger finger at the best of times, and this place sets his teeth on edge. Shooting something up had sort of helped, actually. ] I'm just going to assume that everything is normally this fucked up.

It's no problem. I admit, I'm not certain precisely what kind of length you're looking for. Hopefully I'll give you something that's at least close to what you want regardless though, and I'm sincerely sorry for the delay. I think I'm still just barely in the week limitation. If not, it's all right! It's my fault for losing track of time and I will preemptively inquire if I need to wait a month or so before reapplying (so long as no one else reserves/applies, that is). I know that's the case with failed AC and, I apologize if the answer to my question is given somewhere that I missed.


I guess the big, glaring reason Dirk is the way he is would be because of Dirk's living situation for the past fifteen years. Dirk raised himself in a post-apocalyptic environment where he was only one of two humans left Earth. The living conditions weren't entirely ideal, the world was overtaken by an alien overlord, the planet flooded, and Dirk lived alone in an apartment in the middle of the ocean. Basically everything he knows about humanity he learned himself through researching popculture and history (Something interesting to note is his introduction page doesn't specify which era of history Dirk studies. It's just "ancient" and, from his perspective of living in 2409, pretty much everything is ancient. That's the kind of detail Dirk would omit in order to avoid lying) rather than having first hand experience with humans. That said, at some point he did make contact with other humans (Roxy, Jane, and Jake) because of Pesterchum and because of the chat client Calliope gave him (and Roxy).

It's hard to say what Dirk was like before he met them, but we do see a flashback log of a twelve-year-old Dirk talking with one of his friends. There's a few minor differences in personality between younger Dirk and fifteen/sixteen-year-old Dirk, but the core personality is the same. Young Dirk aimed to research the history of the alien queen and his brother. In his research, he uncovered a lot about the fate of the kids guardians (Roxy's, Jake's, and his own), the Batterwitch herself, the events leading up to the world coming under her control, and the person the Batterwitch served. He also learned a lot about trolls (it's mentioned by Dirk that the Batterwitch tried to revive her species, failed, and then tried to force humanity to be similar to her race. After a few failed attempts and adapting her plans, she even made droids to raise humans in place of parental figures) and the fate of their race.

Basically, learning about things to overcome shortcomings or to satisfy his curiosity is a thing Dirk has been doing for a long time. If you want a little speculation, Dirk started researching humanity so he could connect with how people were in the past (on the opposite end, you have Roxy who occasionally uses troll terminology whereas Dirk uses Earth terms), so he could figure out what happened to the planet, and so he could find out what happened to his brother.

His nature of being kind of overbearing and controlling could be an innate personal trait, though even if it was doubtlessly it was amplified by his situation. On his side of things, he gave himself tasks to perform. He decided to find out about the Batterwitch, find out about his brother, and find out about the Batterwitch's employer. On top of that, he started training himself to get stronger, making deathbots to help with that task, and engaging in his various hobbies. But that's just what Dirk gave himself to do that deals purely with himself.

Turn it around and look at his friend's situations. Jane is a skeptic who has trouble believing things she can't prove are real or don't seem realistic. Jake is naive to the point where it seems like he'll believe anything anyone says. Both of these mentalities are, to Dirk, problematic. Dirk takes it upon himself to bring up these traits to both Jake and Jane often to help better them. He tries to make Jake stronger and is rather arrogant when it comes to the methods and thinking he knows what's best for Jake as well. The bulk of Dirk's tendency to be controlling and overbearing when it comes to these two seems to stem from concern. Sburb is dangerous, Sburb defies logic. Jane would need to, by Dirk's logic, adapt to survive and Jake would similarly need to stop believing everyone he meets otherwise he could get tricked or die. Jake also, again according to Dirk, needs to be strong to face the monsters on his island and to survive Sburb.

After Jake and Jane, there's Roxy. On Derse, Roxy was a drunk who routinely floated away and wandered far from Derse. Dirk tasked himself with following her and bringing her back so she would be safe (while pretending he wasn't awake so he could collect information in Derse more easily). On Earth, Roxy was typically very drunk and had a mind for making mischief. She mentions that Dirk used to be more on board when it came to making mischief with her, but in the log we see he is steadfastly opposed to any chaos that has no purpose. So on top of what Dirk gave himself to do, he also appointed himself Roxy's "keeper" of sorts and looked after her dreamself and tried to make sure that Roxy never did anything too pointlessly chaotic in real life.

Add to that Roxy seemed to team up with the thirteen-year-old copy of his brain that he put in his sunglasses and they were probably pretty overbearing. Over the course of the series, Dirk's Auto-Responder has taken quite a few cues from Roxy. He copies her jokes, he role plays things with her Dirk wouldn't, enables her behavior, and he is generally more open about certain topics than Dirk himself. Dirk sees the Auto-Responder as his responsibility in many ways. He created the splinter of himself so he's responsible for ensuring it has a "chance to thrive as an individual or surpass its limitations," he's responsible for the things it does, and, more than that, responsible for keeping it in check. AR's most problematic behaviors come out in his conversations with Dirk and Jake.

With Dirk, AR is often condescending, aggressive, manipulative, obnoxious, and overbearing. AR hosts an amplified version of the worst of Dirk's traits and, worse than that, AR frequently parades them right in Dirk's face to antagonize him. If there's something AR knows bugs Dirk, he will probably bring it up to challenge Dirk. That's the gist of their dynamic. AR antagonizes Dirk, AR tries to help Dirk, and AR fails to help Dirk. It's pretty easy to see that AR is tied closely with Dirk's sense of self-loathing.

That said, the point of all the above statements was to illustrate that Dirk assigns himself tasks and responsibilities. He overloads himself, stretches himself too far, and splinters due to a need to occupy himself. The point is also that he's become accustomed to being controlling and overbearing because of the tasks he assigns himself and a certain lack of trust in his friends; he needs to research, he needs to keep his status on Derse as secret, he needs to train, Roxy needs to be looked after, Jake needs to be looked after, Jane needs to be looked after, and he has to make sure his AR isn't doing more harm than good. If he doesn't do these things, they probably won't get done. It's an emotional concern that he validates through logical reasoning and continues to apply even after Sburb starts.

I think that's the most of the major stuff that I didn't elaborate on last time.

Personality:
Bubbly and good-natured, Ty Lee is rarely shown to get upset or annoyed. It does happen, yes, because she's highly emotional and in tune with that side of herself, but the negative feelings seem to happen in flashes and she seems to bounce back admirably quickly. She takes a ton of falls over the course of the series in terms of fights (actually the Azula/Mai/Ty Lee team does win a fair amount of the stuff they do, but being not the protags means they do not win everything because well) but it never seems to bother her too much. Even being thrown in the Boiling Rock, the worst prison in the Fire Nation, doesn't seem to bring Ty Lee down. Instead she apparently made friends with a bunch of her fellow prisoners who had formerly been enemies, because...well, why not? The most upset she ever gets is during the fire nation quartet beach episode, and after shouting a bit she says she feels all smooth, like the beach washed away her troubles. Which is a very Ty Lee sort of thing to say, really.

Ty Lee is very easygoing. Some of it may be an act at times (she did eventually admit she ran away and joined the circus not on a whim but to differentiate herself from her identical sisters, whereas before she'd let people assume it was just a flighty move from a flighty girl), but most of it seems to be pretty genuine. It's best shown in her interactions with the Gaang, both during and after her tenure as a member of Azula's three man team. Ty Lee never seemed to be personally angry at any of the Gaang, and even engaged in friendly (occasionally flirty, for Sokka) banter with all of them while fighting. She sometimes showed flashes of annoyance when they get the better of her in a fight, but even that rarely seemed to last beyond the initial "hey!" moment. The most irritated she's been in a battle was against the Kyoshi Warriors, to whom she remarked (years ago, now) that they weren't prettier than herself, Mai, and Azula. ...So, suffice it to say she's just usually fairly chill in terms of Avatar characters, particularly the Fire Nation ones.

This leads into the fact that Ty Lee is actually fairly charming. In one episode where the Fire Nation kids go to the beach (...because why not, apparently) Ty Lee is pretty much the center of attention of a bunch of guys (and later advises Azula that smiling a lot and laughing at boys' jokes, even if they're not funny, is the way to get a guy to like you). While Azula and Mai are...okay, let's just say that neither of them is a people person, given one is slightly insane and the other is really, really antisocial and gloomy? While that is the case, Ty Lee is actually super into people and being around people and talking to people. She's good at it, too. When left to her own devices in the background or when sent to fight on her own, Ty Lee often manages to have friendly conversations or interactions with whomever happens to be around. She's a people person, and it shows. She's good with people and reading people, which really, really helps her to be charming. She knows how people work, generally.

When push comes to shove, it's obvious that Ty Lee is loyal to her friends. Since her biggest character-defining moment happens when she betrays one of her friends, this might seem odd, until you look at the surrounding circumstances. While Ty Lee was part of Azula's girl gang along with Mai, it's shown that for the most part Azula kept her in check by making Ty Lee terrified of her. While the girls did seem to be real friends in the series, with moments of truly enjoying one another's company, Ty Lee admits years later that she never stopped being afraid of Azula, and her first reaction to signs of violence from the princess at that time was to block the hell out of Azula's chi. While her friendship with Azula was fraught with fear and threats to keep her in check (hell, in their first few scenes together Azula basically made staying at the circus potentially fatal for Ty Lee, so she'd agree to go along), Ty Lee's friendship with Mai was much less in question. While she was always affectionate with both girls, Mai seemed to get this somewhat more (probably because she didn't scare Ty Lee, which...helps, when you're friends), and Mai seemed more interested in Ty Lee's actual well-being, even if the two were different as night and day. When it came down to a decision between the two girls she was closest to, it was Mai who won out (although Ty Lee didn't harm Azula, just disabled her, and then wanted to run the hell away).

Despite her nice, perky exterior, Ty Lee can actually be fairly ruthless when the situation calls for it. With her back to a wall, she'll defend herself, but more than that - she's perfectly willing to play the villain for a fairly long time and the only thing that has her swapping sides after basically two seasons? A threat to her best friend. That was where she drew the line, not at taking over kingdoms or helping Azula and the Fire Nation in their ongoing conquests, but a threat to Mai. While she's sweet and does become one of the Good Guys after that, Ty Lee's morals probably aren't the best and she tends to default to doing what is necessary. She even chiblocks Azula in the Search, even though it bothers Zuko since Azula was kind of chained up at the time. That is not how you normally treat a prisoner, if you are a Complete Good Guy, even if that prisoner is Azula. ...This does awkwardly backfire on her later because her chiblocking loosens up joints for a bit after but WELP. Nice job breaking it, hero.

Further, the reason for her eventual turn from Evil is selfish in nature even if it seems selfless. Yes, she did it to save her best friend. ...But she didn't turn away from the evil thing up until that very point - where Mai's safety and freedom were on the line - even though she'd been asked to do worse things than that on a near-daily basis by Azula up to that point. What flipped the switch for her was not anything pure and selfless, but a purely selfish motive of that's my best friend and an inability to let anything happen to Mai regardless of how scared she was. This isn't to say Ty Lee isn't cool with the new world order or that she doesn't understand that the Fire Nation was in the wrong. It's just that what flipped things around for her was something decidedly selfish rather than, you know, realizing it was wrong first and then doing something about it even if Azula was scary as hell.

While she eventually stood up for herself when push came to shove, Ty Lee is conflict avoidant in many cases, and seems to prefer things to be harmonious over, well, not. One of the biggest examples? Any time it came to Azula throughout the series up until Ty Lee's defection. While she would express annoyance at times or would try to do her own thing (notably in the first episode she was in, she tried to turn down Azula's "offer" to run off and chase the Avatar), Ty Lee pretty much never stood her ground and said "no" to the princess. She also seemed pretty willing to just go with the flow in regards to her other friends, not arguing overmuch if Mai was against something - when Mai would occasionally just go "No way in hell", Ty Lee never said more than "Azula won't be happy" in order to persuade the other girl. It is a huge deal character-wise when she finally stands up to Azula, and even then it doesn't seem to have been deliberate so much as instinctive. Azula was about to hurt Mai, and in that instant, Ty Lee's reaction was to disable the princess and to urge Mai to run with her. This avoidance of conflict does not mean she won't fight people; she happily does so at Azula's request many times over the course of the series, and later joins a fighting lady group, and further will always defend herself. It's more that Ty Lee doesn't seem fond of causing waves on a personal social level, and her fear of someone can keep her cowed. Basically, she tends to avoid conflict that isn't necessary and can go along with people just to keep the peace sometimes.

Ty Lee is an attention seeker, although it has gotten a little bit better over the course of her series. This isn't really shocking, given she was a performer for a good while there. The reason she originally ran off to join the circus was that she had (and has still, presumably) six identical sisters, and she was scared of being one of a set. She feels a strong need to individualize herself, and takes "circus freak" as a compliment, because it proves she's different. Ty Lee often shows off her acrobatic talents in side scenes or in the background, and seems to feel the need to be around people almost all the time, seeking their attention and approval (which is, incidentally, a really good way to keep her in check). While she does eventually choose to be part of a new matched set (that of the Kyoshi warriors), that is a choice she makes, and it's still "specical", and doesn't really effect this aspect of her personality, from all appearances.

It should also be noted that she is admittedly superficial, though this has also slightly improved over time. Ty Lee makes the time to remark that she and her friends "look prettier" while fighting than another group of girls, and apparently flirts with guys for the attention she gets from doing so (it makes her feel pretty and special and also is fun, so why wouldn't she do it?). At least it doesn't keep her from doing things like jumping into a tube of mud (...though she noted it was because Azula wouldn't be pleased if she didn't, while Mai decided she didn't care if Azula wouldn't be pleased because fuck that) or getting her hands dirty, but it doesn't help with the whole ditzy acrobat image Ty Lee exudes even in her role as Serious Woman Warrior...which, while she has the skills, she just will never quite have the personality for.

This is because Ty Lee doesn't just seem flighty. She actually is flighty in many ways. She talks to people about their auras in a very serious manner and decided to run off to join the circus; while she might have had serious reasons for the latter, Ty Lee actually seems to just sort of do whatever the hell she wants (until Azula gave her directions back in the day, which she followed more or less to a T) and chats about whatever she wants whenever she wants. She never shuts up in general; while her friends were less chatty, Ty Lee has a need to talk to people and to be spoken to, and doesn't seem to do well with silences.

Abilities/Powers:
Her acrobatic skills are fairly off the charts. She tends to utilize these combatively throughout her seies (though she does get pulled out of a very promising circus career upon her introduction in order to chase the Avatar, to her initial dismay), but Ty Lee's acrobatic feats also just tend to be something she does naturally and without thinking it over too much. Ty Lee is basically crazy skilled in parkour and free running because of her mad acrobatic skills, and basically she can be relied upon to be dodgy and limber as all get-out. This makes her a pain in the ass to fight against, and she's seen to be capable of outmaneuvering huge groups of soldiers and some pretty powerful benders throughout the series, although admittedly familiarity with her fighting style can be used against her. See the following.

She's also an adept chiblocker; in ATLA, she was the only chiblocker ever shown, although it became a Thing in Korra. She was admitted into the Kyoshi warriors (so she does have their fighting styles in addition to her ATLA styles, nowadays) after trading the girls some chiblocker lessons. It basically disrupts the hell out of bending, but also just renders muscles and the like useless, so fighting against her can be annoying as hell. You can read all you could ever want about chiblocking here. Suffice it to say this style of fighting meshes really well with her acrobatic shenanigans. As I said above, familiarity can work against her; once people know she can do this they tend to do the intelligent thing and take measures against it. SADLY. Still, it is a thing that is a thing, and can probably at least disrupt any magical fighting style that utilizes a flow of energy in the body, although it is unlikely to disrupt any other type. ...Though you'll still get limp noodle limbs if she lands her hits, but the paralyzation effects are not by any means permanent.

Further, Ty Lee has since been trained in the Kyoshi fighting style, which you can read about further here! The main thing they do is use people's energy and movements against them (little wonder Ty Lee caught on pretty fast, there) often with the help of their dual fans, which can be used defensively, to direct movements, as projectiles, or even as boomerangs! Aside from the fans they are trained in the use of their shields and also thin katanas, although the katanas are not their main weaponry as they prefer to utilize their fans, apparently. They have a lot of coordinated team movements that obviously will do jack all for Ty Lee without her squadron, but yeah.

Ty Lee also claims to be able to see auras, occasionally complaining about people having "dingy" auras or complimenting them for having happy or pink ones. It's never actually stated if she's full of it on this count or not, but Ty Lee herself certainly believes she can see auras.
Items/Weapons: For reference, Ty Lee is arriving in her full Kyoshi Warrior get-up. The only thing of note about this uniform is that it is basically fancy pants armor that she wears all the time these days and that is has a built in retractable shield thing that can withstand firebending (...not that this helped the Kyoshi Warriors when they took on Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee herself back in the day um). The three items that arrive with her otherwise are:

Haven was sort of a silly name for a place that was anything but. It wasn't a joke, really, and Ty Le hadn't made the observation aloud to anyone because, well - come on, who wouldn't have noticed it? But it was something that flickered through her thoughts whenever she looked at the billboard, the creepy one with the message that made her think of the Dai Li. Made her think of Ba Sing Se, really. Where everyone had seemed to think if they just pretended hard enough there wouldn't be a war outside their walls.

And then she'd waltzed in with Mai behind Azula, and how had that gone for them after?

That was in the past, though. In the present Ty Lee was...well, exploring. So far her explorations had turned up more questions than answers, but you got that, sometimes. She felt weirdly naked, even though she had her full kit on her. It'd been ages since she'd really been alone for any amount of time, especially for something like this. Sure, scouting ahead was a thing, and she went off on her own now and then, but...a dangerous situation, with none of the other girls in sight? It was just...weird. Wrong. Even before she'd joined up she'd had people around all the time. Mai and Azula, back when Mai wasn't off doing whatever she's doing now, and Azula wasn't...well, Azula, although she'd still been Azula back then. The circus people.

Her sisters, although it'd been longer still since Ty Lee had had them nearby.

At that thought, Ty Lee smacked her own cheeks. Not hard, just...for warmth, and to sort of wake herself up. "Nope! Come on, we can do this...even if it's just "me", not "we". First things first...more information, and look for the girls. Right?" And if they weren't there, well...she'd look for other people, maybe circle back around to the room she'd woken up in. She'd find someone she knew, surely (if she just believed she would hard enough) and then...

Then she'd make a plan for after that. Yeah. That'd do it. Normally Suki was the brains of things, or before that Azula, but she was okay. Ty Lee could handle this, surely. And if she let herself think otherwise, she'd get worry lines or her aura would go dark and manky and who wanted that to deal with, right? So...onwards. That was the only option.

Personality:

At first glance, there's nothing about Kamui that's menacing at all. He's a short, delicate-looking man, with bright vermilion-red hair and the palest skin. There's nothing in his everyday disposition that should raise many flags as well. Always in good cheer, he seems to wear a smile like one would wear clothes. In fact, he's more often seen carrying that pleasant smile with him than not, and the situations he's in rarely have the impact to change that. He's a polite man - seemingly again, of course - who addresses his superiors with due respect and plugs in honorifics where appropriate. He also appears to be a calm and casual man, taking most of the situations he's been in so far - many of them life-threatening - with the same curiosity and amusement. Indeed, on first meeting, not many would suspect that Kamui is what he is -- a cold-blooded, ruthless, killing machine.

But let's not jump to that so quick. There's still more that I have to say.

If one were to pay closer attention to the words coming out of the mouth of this pleasant-looking man, they might get a glimpse of the kind of person he is. Really, he makes no effort to hide it. He may give the impression of politeness at first, but his are only empty courtesies -- honorifics plugged in for the sake of it, respects given just because. There's little sincerity in the way he carries himself - that calm and pleasant disposition that he portrays. In truth, Kamui can be scathing in his remarks. He has less-than-favorable opinions of many people - particularly the ones he deems weak - and he will say it to their faces in the crudest way possible, all this while wearing that same unchanging smile. It's either that, or he'll insinuate to hell his meaning and throw in a few subtle insults. This is what he did to Housen. Kamui didn't approve of the way he had let himself go - particularly how fixated he was on his consort, Hinowa - and so, he slowly brought up the topic, offering his unflattering opinions and angering Housen bit by bit. Eventually, he decided to cut to the chase, calling Housen a "pathetic geezer" and earning a right hook that would have sent him smashing into the ceiling if he had not dodged (no, an innocent courtesan was lodged into the ceiling instead). He really has no filter, and that would be due to the fact that he simply can't be bothered with the feelings of others.

A selfish person to the core, Kamui rarely takes others into account when he makes his decisions. Whether or not he's inconveniencing people, hurting people, killing people, that's simply not a concern for him. Whether or not his decisions are actually sound, that's not a concern for him either -- as his long-suffering subordinate Abuto can attest. No, Kamui actually seems to chase his latest whim most of the time, and these whims change quickly with recent developments. His actions are confusing to those who don't understand the simple, often self-gratifying reasons for them, because he can say one thing then do a contradictory thing afterward. This is shown in the way Kamui had expressed his disappointment and disinterest in Housen - and he was being truthful in this - then proceeded to meddle with his affairs by reuniting Hinowa and the child that Housen was trying to keep away from her. Housen had asked him what he was planning, why his actions did not seem to match up, when the truth was actually something simple. He did have no interest in Housen or his affairs, but he was a little curious to see Hinowa - and most probably wanted to start shit, too. (It should be noted that to achieve this trivial little goal, he had to kill dozens of people to get to her.) Abuto has, in almost every scene they are in together, called him some variation of 'a complete blockhead', and Kamui is arguably deserving of this nickname. It isn't that he doesn't have the capability to think things through - he does appear to have a sharp head on his shoulders, having been seen reading people with a considerable ease - but it's just that he follows his whims so often, his decisions aren't always sound. In fact, they have gotten him into a load of trouble in this past -- and yes, it was the life-threatening kind. For example: In his eagerness to fight Takasugi, he hadn't realised that Takasugi was being used as bait to lure him out. He cornered the other man one on one as everyone had predicted he would, but was promptly ambushed by an entire army. His impulsive, self-gratifying nature is precisely why he has a subordinate like Abuto around to negotiate, mitigate and pretty much clear up his messes for him.

If he's self-gratifying, then just what is it that gratifies him so much? Now, we're getting to the meat of this write-up.

As it might have been easy to guess by now, Kamui craves not for booze or women, but for battle -- he lives for it, even. He is, as Takasugi aptly put it, a 'beast who does not die even when killed'; one-part man, three or four-parts predator. Seated deep inside him is a thirst that's constantly there, and it has governed almost all of his known actions so far. Fighting is, right now, most likely the only thing motivating him. When opportunity arises and he comes face to face with a strong opponent, there seems to be an excitement that overcomes Kamui -- to the extent where he'll discard his calm disposition for that moment, and his face cracks into something more sinister. We have seen this many, many, many times. Honestly, he himself has described meeting opponents stronger than himself as something to be pleased about; and when he gets to spill their blood, "my soul cries out in ecstasy".

Not only does Kamui love to fight, but when he does, he fights to kill. You would expect a punch to only bruise, maybe break a bone at most, but Kamui's punches can completely shatter a regular human being, and that is exactly what he's gunning for. With his monstrous strength, he's been seen killing countless people with a single chop - his chops looking more like stabs considering how much blood they splay. The idea of holding back in a battle - fighting only to 'defeat', like his sister does - does not even occur to him, and he actually disdains the very thought of not fighting with your best. In a fight with Kamui, it's either you die or he does; he won't allow for middle ground. Truly, he is ruthless, and his ruthlessness is not extended to enemies alone. Kamui has killed allies - as seen with Ungyo, whom he impaled with his arm for simply standing in his way - and raised his hand against his only family - as seen with his father, whom he tried to kill in order to surpass.

Not to say it justifies his actions, but there's an explanation for his constant bloodlust. Kamui would be an exemplary member of his own race - the living definition of what it means to be Yato. The Yato tribe are a race of monstrous, battle-hungry aliens who look very human, with the exception of a few specific qualities: Their intolerance to the sun, heightened strength, healing and agility, innate ability to fight and - of course - their constant thirst for battle. They are a race who have, traditionally, wandered from planet to planet in search of new opponents to destroy and new battlefields to lay siege on, gaining strength with each person they take down. Inside every Yato - even the ones who no longer subscribe to the traditional ways - lies a beast, waiting to be awakened. This was very clear in Kagura's fight with Abuto, where she was pushed so far that she finally snapped and let her instincts take over. The normally gentle Kagura became a ruthless monster, tearing through Abuto for the rest of the fight. It's no surprise that a long history of infighting has left the Yato at the brink of extinction.

When your blood tells you to kill, there are two ways you can respond: Put up walls of inhibitions - as Kagura does - or cheerfully embrace it. The latter would describe what Kamui has done, and these two different approaches are the reason their paths have differed so much from when the both of them used to live together. He, as Abuto aptly puts it, 'follows his blood', doing whatever his instincts command of him, and most of the time, those instincts are roaring at him to fight and kill. Not only does Kamui follow his blood, but he also seems to take an immense pride in it. Though he acknowledges that there are many different forms of strength in the universe (a fact that delights him), it is clear that he holds his own race in high regard. This is evident in his comments about the Shinra tribe, whom he - after seeing the sorry state of Kujaku Hime Kada - remarked 'could not even hold a candle to one Yato'. It is also evident in the way he reprimands other Yato for living in a manner that disgraces their tribe.

Kamui would be what you would call a Yato purist, a person who practices the traditional ways, and if you put that into perspective, a lot of his actions fit in nicely. He seems to have a very passionate desire to live as Yato should -- hot-blooded, in constant war. His only goal in life at the moment is to seek strong opponents and take them out, strengthening himself in the process. In fact, when Kamui does manage to find an opponent he deems worthy, his eyes light up like it's the best thing in the world; friend or foe, no matter what the circumstances, he will move in for the kill. This was evident in the fact that he took on the 'boring' monitoring assignment of checking up on Housen. He actually had no interest in the mission itself, as he had little loyalty to give to his superiors, but he was willing to go for a chance to see the state of his old master and possibly start a fight. (Which he did, despite the fact that he knew it might have triggered an all-out war.) Also, when Kamui does lock in on an opponent that interests him - someone he calls his 'prey' - he appears to go to great lengths to protect them just so he can save them for himself. He actually ended up playing a part in bringing Yoshiwara peace for this reason -- which was a rather odd turn of events, considering the fact that he's a brutal killer. After the death of Housen, Kamui had taken full-credit, negotiating (or rather, having Abuto negotiate) his way into Housen's seat as the King of the Night and putting Yoshiwara under his own jurisdiction. This prevented Yoshiwara from falling into the hands of anyone else, and essentially maintained it at a state of peace (Kamui had no intention to enslave the women there like Housen did, after all). Make no mistake, he didn't do it out of any kind of concern for Yoshiwara's residents or any helping of kindness; he did it because he knew the higher-ups would go after Sakata Gintoki's head for defeating Housen, and Kamui had marked him as his own prey. If Kamui took credit and kept Gintoki a secret, he could keep him for himself.

So, just what is a 'strong' person to Kamui? He actually has very clear definitions of what he finds 'strong' and 'weak'. A strong person, to him, is not just someone with astounding fighting ability. Being Yato, he has met countless people with the strength of gods; simply having the ability to break boulders or the skill to take down armies isn't enough for him. This is made evident in the aftermath of his fight with Housen, probably one of the strongest characters in the series in terms of sheer power. Though Kamui was interested at first, his interest gradually dwindled when he saw the state that Housen was in - now an old man who spent his days drinking and laying women, who was too fixated on Hinowa for his own good. It dwindled so much that Kamui didn't actually finish the fight, leaving after expressing his disinterest. As shown, a 'strong' person, to Kamui, is one with a strong body and soul. A person who has kept every aspect of them sharpened. He actually appears to have a disdain for the common vices of men like sex and alcohol; he finds that they will 'dilute the pure Yato blood' and weaken him. He also takes a condescending tone to those who have let themselves get distracted by such pleasures, particularly if they're his clansmen. Throughout the series, Kamui appears to have developed an appreciation for resolve - a thing he now considers another form of strength. His admiration for Gintoki's resolve is the reason he is so interested in him. After seeing Gintoki go up against the far more powerful Housen, picking himself up over and over after each lethal blow and even managing to land a few blows of his own (despite being completely outmatched), Kamui has been fixated on him so far, marking him as 'prey'. This interest has extended to all samurai who vaguely remind him of Gintoki, which was why he had attacked Takasugi at all. He even calls Earth - among all the million other things unique to Earth - the 'Planet of the Samurai', and that should more than speak for how interested he is in samurai now.

Like with the strong, Kamui has an opinion on what he deems "weak". Those unable to fight or defend themselves are a given, of course, but that isn't the only definition of weakness that he has. Weakness, to Kamui, is compassion and mercy. He appears to feel very strongly about this, because he has been seen chiding his fellow Yato for showing those qualities countless times. The prime example is his sister, Kagura; the last thing that Kamui had said to her before abandoning her and their sick mother, and the first thing he said to her when they met again years after, was that she was nothing but a weakling. 'Weak' is not something most would call a girl like Kagura, who is very able to break walls and take down men twice her size. Kagura has a very distinct quality that sets her apart from Kamui, though: She is kind. She's that girl who cries over dead rabbits. She's that girl who plays with the other children in the neighbourhood. She's the one who saved Kamui's life when their father was about to kill him, and yet there's little gratitude on Kamui's part. Kagura, possessing all the traits that Kamui appears to look down on, is the definition of a 'weakling' to him.

Personality: (continued.)

Because of his disdain for things like compassion and kindness, he doesn't seem to possess any. All of Kamui's actions to date point to his apparent status as a sociopath. Even if he smiles often and is usually quite civil in his mannerisms, those are all empty gestures; Kamui doesn't seem to care for any of the people around him. His subordinates, for example, have always followed his orders obediently, and most likely aided him in achieving his position as Commander. Kamui killed Ungyo without so much as batting an eye, however, even treating himself to a taste of the dead man's blood right after. Kamui also cared little for the state of Abuto, who had lost an arm as a result of Kamui's reckless actions. Later on, he casually told Abuto to not get caught up with such 'little things', as if the fact that a man was dead and another had lost his arm was but a small hiccup in their plans. It is clear that his regard for their well-being is minimal to none. This nonchalant treatment of the people around him is extended to family as well. Kamui has repeatedly remarked that he cares little for Kagura, that she was 'no one' to him;, and judging from their interactions so far this appears to be true. Kamui also has nothing nice to say about his father, whom he finds 'weak' and 'soft' for choosing family over a life of battle. While it would be a stretch to say that Kamui can care for someone, he does appear to have developed a slight fondness for Abuto, however. He spared the other man's life despite the fact that he had lost in battle - an act so unprecedented that Abuto could only react in shock - and even helped support him out of the alley they were in. It's probably no coincidence that Abuto still poses much use to him, but the casual and almost friendly way they interact on a daily basis indicates some sort of familiarity. If anything, Kamui probably doesn't have the capability to show concern, but he can like someone, at least.

In Kamui's world, there is only the strong, the weak and the ones with potential. He has remarked that he dislikes killing children and women because the former may grow into strong fighters and the latter may birth some (that didn't stop him from massacring dozens of Housen's female guards, however). He also spared Gintoki's life because he acknowledged his potential, describing himself as a person who 'chooses to save their side dish for last'. He could see that Gintoki was too wounded at that moment to provide a satisfying fight, and he also wanted the other man to get stronger before Kamui tastes him for himself.

A lot of Kamui's background in shrouded in mystery, but there is evidence implying that he was not always the ruthless killer he is now. Umibouzu had mentioned this explicitly in his talk with Gintoki, remarking that Kagura wanted to 'save' Kamui and bring back the person he once was. The fact that he may have actually cared for someone once is also implied in Housen's comment to him -- that he must be wishing to reunite Hinowa and her son as 'penance' for abandoning his sick mother. While this was definitely not true, Kamui had to have shown some shard of care for his mother as a child for Housen to make a comment like that. How, exactly, Kamui was like back then, or what - if anything - had triggered his shift in personality remains unseen.

Before Housen passed away, he had given Kamui one last piece of advice. He could see himself in Kamui, he had said. They were both people who only knew how to fight, who would take everything they wanted by force. They were both people who would tear through battlefield after battlefield tirelessly with no understanding of what it was like to love or hate, what meaning it all had. Housen predicted that Kamui would turn out exactly the same way he did - a victor only in name, because he had destroyed everything he held dear in the crossfire. The strongest, with nothing left to show for it. It wasn't an assessment that Kamui disagreed with; he certainly believes that he has that fate in store for himself. However, Kamui is extremely resigned to it. He doesn't actually care about the future or past, after all. There are no things he has particular ties to, and no people he's locked in bonds with. He is a creature who only lives in the present, in the moment's pleasure, and he has described in his own words that 'I can't see what lies ahead. Everything blurs together into a new and everlasting battlefield, and there I feel most at home.'

Abilities/Powers: Kamui is part of the Yato Tribe, a warrior race of aliens renown for their ability to inflict carnage. There are some qualities unique to the Yato:


STRENGTH: The Yato are, firstly, immensely strong. The extent of just how strong is uncertain, but Yato have been seen decimating large statues with a single punch. Kamui is no exception. A punch from him can easily shatter a regular person, and he has been seen destroying large ships single-handedly.
SPEED AND AGILITY: The Yato have an above average speed and agility. Kamui has been seen dodging attacks in a split-second, so quick in his movements that it can look like he had appeared someplace else to the untrained eye.
HEALING: Accelerated healing is another unique quality to the Yato body. They also appear to have a limited regenerative ability (for smaller appendages like ears). Kamui, for example, appeared fully-healed a few days after being impaled in the back by arrows. Also, while it is unclear if this is a unique quality to him, substances like tranquilizers appear to have a delayed effect on Kamui. After being injected by elephant tranquilizers, he was still able wreak carnage, killing a dozen or so men before finally succumbing to the effects.
INTOLERANCE TO THE SUN: The planet that the Yato come from has been described as a dreary one that always rains. The Yato are, therefore, not adapted to living in the sun, as their pale skin shows. If not hiding under the shade or fully covered up, prolonged direct sunlight is likely to burn them. It seems that the more exposure they have to the sun, the better their tolerance to it - as shown by Kagura, who is regularly seen walking around without her umbrella. The less exposure they have to it, on the other hand, the worse their tolerance to it. If a Yato were to go years without going out into the sun, for example, their skin will dry out completely and they will die.

The screen pans down, and the phone's owner waves at the camera. He's a pleasant-looking man with bright hair and the palest skin, and he's donned in traditional Chinese clothing (a changshan). For some reason, he's holding an umbrella despite the fact that it isn't raining.

There's a cheerful smile, and the perceptive might note that there's little sincerity in it. The even more perceptive might pick up on the fact that ... this guy isn't exactly someone you want to cross paths with. ]

In one of the rooms of this abandoned building that the Yorozuya are going on a rampage in, Kamui stands in front of Kagura, neither of them moving an inch. His sister had broken off from her friends earlier, telling everyone that she was the only one who could deal with this 'Jerk-Brother' of hers, that it was important to her that she did, and that they should move forward without her. They'll go back together afterward, that girl had said, before plunging herself into battle. With those hopeful, determined eyes, they might have had it difficult to refuse.

And it's evident in the sorry state of the room that there had been a battle in this place - not any regular kind of battle, but a battle between two beasts. A wall had crumbled, and the other walls have dents in them the size of small fists. There's debris lying everywhere - glass, ceramic and wood. It might have looked like some sort of tie at first glance, with how the both of them are standing and there's a deathly silence filling the air. If one should inspect further, though, they'll see something poking out of Kagura's back, and blood searing out of a wound that had impaled her.

Kamui's hand.

"It's too bad that it had to end this way, dear sister. But you attacked me, you know?" He starts slowly, a calmness in his tone that can only suggest complete nonchalance. Sure, this was the sister he had lived with, broke bread with, braved the situation of poverty that they were born in with, but all that is long behind him. He dislodges his arm from inside her, not flinching once at the feeling of his own sister's guts. Kagura's body topples, still the small and delicate thing that it is, and lands on the ground.

"I'll admit that you got stronger," He continues, and it's not an insincere compliment. A lot of the blood that's soaking his white clothes is his own, and he can acknowledge that. However --

"But you're still the same as you were then. Weak."

If you were to ask anyone who knows Stiles Stilinski to pick the one word that comes to mind when they think of him, nine out of ten times and without a beat of hesitation, you would get: sarcasm. And they would likely sigh in somewhat fond exasperation and some would even shake their heads, but with a tiny smile despite it. Of course, it doesn’t end at sarcasm. Stiles is a complex person with a lot hidden underneath, but sarcasm is his most powerful social tool and not just as a defense, but also as offense and a way to disarm and charm. He uses varying intensities of sarcasm alongside sincerity to ease people’s defenses and wiggle his way under their skin where he’ll either do his best to aggravate the crap out of them or do everything in his power to ease their pain even at the expense of himself.

Despite the way he seems to be a constant source of sunshine with his sarcastic wit and mischievous deeds, Stiles is very troubled deep down. He lost his mother to a degenerative brain disease known as frontotemporal dementia when he was nine. Her death wasn’t sudden; it was slow and traumatizing for him as he watched her gradually lose her mind. And for some as of yet unknown reason, he blames himself for her death. In season two, Lydia spiked the punch at her party with a kind of wolfsbane that made people hallucinate what seemed to be their inner demons or fears. Stiles hallucinated his father dressed in funeral garb, drunk and angry and yelling at him, at some point saying: “You killed your mother, and now you’re killing me.” He’s also admitted to Scott that after she died, he struggled with panic attacks for a long time after. Panic and anxiety attacks also struck him a couple times in the course of the show, though not triggered by thoughts of his mother; the idea of losing his father too is enough to send him over the edge.

But even when he feels like he’s at the end of his rope, losing his mind in the middle of intense panic, he pulls through for the sake of those he loves. He is the detective, the strategist, the one who puts the puzzle pieces together and then jumps into action despite every odd being against him. His greatest character strength is how much he gives of himself to everyone, but it is also a flaw. Stiles will do anything for his Dad, Scott, Lydia, Scott’s mother, Melissa and even his more satellite relationships such as Allison. He’s there to cover them from falling debris and he’s there to support them emotionally. But upon further inspection, there are few that he’ll consciously allow to give as much of themselves to him in return. Every time he’s opened up to his closest friends, it was usually forced through circumstances out of his control such as one of his panic attacks, and even then he managed to diffuse the situation with a witty comment to make them smile and think he’s going to be okay. And for the most part he is okay, he manages his problems well enough and distracts himself by putting everyone’s needs above his own.

This inability to truly let anyone in is likely due to a deep-seeded sense of guilt and self-loathing beginning with his mother and how she died. He’s carried these feelings about her death in his heart in secret for years; it’s likely that not even Scott knows how he feels about it. And so, over time, sarcastic wit became like armor to keep people at a certain distance to, in his mind, keep them safe and to keep from losing them. Loss and abandonment are big fears of his, naturally due to his mother’s passing. And this witty sarcasm has not only become armor to protect others, it’s also become a security blanket for him. The more he snarks and gets under people’s skin or makes them smile, the more secure he feels and at this point it’s just natural. Those fears of loss and abandonment and the guilt and the self-loathing can’t touch him so long as he’s making Lydia or Scott smile, validating his importance to them.

It’s interesting, however, that Stiles has a razor sharp tongue and yet he is very prone to getting tongue-tied. In an instant, Stiles can go from a cutting or funny remark to awkward and fumbling over his words. Usually, this is due to a pretty girl kissing him (something he always looks incredibly confused about no matter how many times it happens), or someone like Derek effectively intimidating him somehow and reminding him that while his sarcastic armor is strong, it won’t hold up against supernatural strength and claws. Other instances where he finds himself struggling with words usually relate to those uncomfortable times when he can’t avoid getting a bit personal with someone and the focus is on him. Or other times, the focus is on them and it’s just plain awkward because he doesn’t know them that well. But whether he’s laying down the sharp wit or tongue-tied, there are many times where he’ll also end up with his foot in his mouth. He tends to say it like it is and sometimes this can get him in trouble, but he’s not oblivious to the reactions of others. He can pick up on when he’s screwed up and said something he shouldn’t have or said something too bluntly or insensitively and immediately he’ll try to repair the damage if it’s a friend.

Of all of his friendships, Scott’s is no doubt the most significant and important in his life. In fact, at the start of the show, it would seem that Scott and Stiles were a two for one deal: where there’s Scott, Stiles is not far behind and neither of them seemed to really branch out much. Scott’s transformation into a werewolf definitely changed everything for them, with both the introduction to the existence of the supernatural and the dramatic change in their social status. But despite all the changes, they didn’t grow apart. Even when Scott struggled to control his werewolf instincts and attempted to kill Stiles and even when Stiles was angry with Scott for kissing Lydia. Stiles’ loyalty to Scott is limitless. In season two, when Scott was being influenced by dark magic urging him to commit suicide by drenching himself in gasoline and lighting himself on fire, Stiles talked him down. He told Scott that he was his brother and that if he was going to do this, then he would just have to take Stiles with him, and with that Stiles stepped into the gasoline puddle, effectively endangering himself and slowly took the flare in Scott’s hand away. And Scott would in turn do anything for Stiles, as can be seen in the recent season when Stiles is possessed by the nogitsune and everyone insists the only solution is to kill him, Scott refuses to believe it, and risks everything to save his best friend.

In season three, Stiles has been faced with great hardships that have whittled at his mind and tested his limits. Throughout the first half of the season, Stiles dealt with the possible death of his father but pulled through and helped to save him. In the second half, Stiles is plagued by intense night terrors that make him question what is real and what isn’t. He experiences dreams within dreams within dreams that feel so vivid and real that upon waking, he isn’t sure he’s actually awake. It doesn’t help that all words become gibberish and he hallucinates riddles in languages he doesn’t understand. All of this is a result of the sacrifice he, Allison and Scott made to save their parents. The ritual opened a door in his mind making him vulnerable to supernatural forces, one of these forces being the nogitsune that took residence in his body and slowly exerted control over him. His trust in his own mind and his carefully placed walls start to crumble when he finds clues indicating that he was responsible for horrific deeds resulting in deaths and attempted murder. It’s evidence of his trust in Scott that he didn’t hesitate to show his best friend these clues despite their incriminating nature. And Scott being the earnest friend he is, told him he believes Stiles, but he also doesn’t believe he’s trying to kill people.

Exhausted from the doubt in his own sanity, Stiles takes Scott’s advice to go home and get some rest, though instead he goes to the hospital where Scott’s mom does her motherly and nurse-ly duties and helps him out. She gives him a sedative to help him sleep since he hasn’t been sleeping much at all in the last few days. And even through all of this turmoil and angst, Stiles still found it in himself to keep being the joker, to keep sending out those witty and sarcastic zingers to make people smile. And later on, after he’s somewhat separated from the nogitsune and he’s in physical and psychological agony and possibly dying, he didn’t care. He still found that spark of wit, held on desperately to his sarcasm and his warmth even though his body was going cold. All he could think about was saving everyone and if he should die to accomplish this, he wouldn’t regret it. Stiles’ resilience and loyalty are part of what make him in irreplaceable part of everyone’s lives.

[Stiles looks up at the peeling billboard with suspicion, squinting unhappily and then rolls his eyes, looking down at his phone screen. Upon seeing his hands, he lets out a shaky breath and meticulously counts his fingers. Finding that he has ten and no extra digits, he runs his hand down his forehead to rest over his eyes.]

Oh pleeease tell me I wasn’t kidnapped by some eastern European cult with a cold war era fixation.

[He lifts his hand off of his eyes and gestures with it sarcastically.] I mean, the slogan is “In Haven, we are all safe… together.” Really? You couldn’t think of anything more creative than that? Well, if you wanted to creep me out, you damn well succeeded!

[His hand drops and then he squints at the phone screen.] Great. No text. This really is the dark ages.

[Then he lets out a breath through puckered lips, blowing out his cheeks and rocking on his heels as he goes over his thoughts and the situation.] Okay. I’m in a dream, and I’m losing my mind even more than I was before. Or… I’m not and my life just reached the apex of the twilight zone weirdness.

[A sigh through his nose and he mutters the next part to himself.] I’m getting really tired of screaming myself awake…

[With a final glance at the phone he closes it and then proceeds to scream at himself to wake up until his throat is hoarse. Ten fingers or no… at this point he’s not sure of anything anymore.]

Sample Entry Two:

For the first time in what felt like months, Stiles woke up from sleep slowly and calmly. For weeks he’d been screaming himself awake after his dreams tortured him with illusions of reality over and over again. And it was the gentle return to consciousness that first had him suspicious of how awake he really was. The last thing he remembered was Melissa giving him a sedative on a hospital bed and falling asleep not long after. And upon further inspection of his surroundings, he found that he was not in a hospital room. In fact, the room that he was in was so far from a hospital room, he was concerned that he could get hepatitis just from looking at the windowsill.

His first instinct was to scream himself into true wakefulness, but something about the situation wasn’t like all the other night terrors. Usually, his dreams would start in his room and sometimes they led him to the nemeton. And then he’d “wake up” in his bed and go about his day until suddenly he was screaming awake for real in his bed. Never before had his dreams transported him somewhere he wasn’t familiar with. You could say that his current environment was too surreal to be fake, if that made any sense.

Cautiously, he got up, trying to stave off the anxiety threatening to choke him. He needed to explore this, needed to be sure of what was going on before acting like a lunatic and screaming his head off. He ran shaking fingers along the bed frames in the room, feeling out their every imperfection to ground himself. And then he pulled his hands into view and counted each finger aloud under his breath. Then he did it again. And again.

Ten. Ten fingers. But… he had a feeling he would need to count them a few more times before he felt secure. But for now he was secure enough and it was time to figure out the situation and see if any of his friends were here too (if it’s real). He turned to approach the window and look out, not quite ready to leave the room.

The city outside looked like something out of one of Soviet Russia’s old satellite countries during the worst of the cold war. And dear god that billboard.

He was seriously questioning his sanity again.

Canon: Akaya Akashiya Ayakashino
Canon Point: The ending in which he sacrifices his freedom for Akiyoshi's safety.
Background/History: Imagine a perfectly normal modern-day Japan, with cell phones and cars and all those cool gadgets we take for granted these days. (A particularly industrious pixiv user has put it down as the year 2011, if you want specifics.) Then add in all the Japanese spirits, or ayakashi, of traditional folklore: fox spirits, shrine gods, flying goldfish, and the like. It's implied that such spirits are struggling to survive in the human realm, though; the reason they can thrive in Yue's hometown of Utsuwa is because a fox spirit named Shin (one of the two shrine gods who watched over the area) had "spirited away" the entire town, casting a barrier that cut it off from the outside world. This barrier wiped the town off the map: trains pass right through the station, never seeing that there even is a station to stop at. Likewise, nobody ever leaves the town.

Ayakashi in this world have a very particular way of life: Humans are a sort of delicacy, and making one your meal is the single way for an ayakashi to grow - without this sustenance, they are too spiritually weak to grow in size or strength. But this doesn't mean they can eat just anyone. Humans are only visible to them if they have particularly strong spiritual energy or happen to be "meals". Like this. Proper consummation of a "meal" isn't just bloody murder, either: the victim is so perfectly devoured that the very memory of their existence is erased from the minds of the people around them. If an ayakashi eats people indiscriminately, that ayakashi will become an akujiki, which literally translates to "eating poor food". These creatures are considered the lowest of the low, and more often than not have lost control to the point they manifest only as corrupted shadows, unable to even speak properly.

Yue was born and raised in the local mountain shrine, where Shin's sister, the shrine goddess Mikoto, lives along with her ayakashi servants. Raised solely to be the vessel for Shin's soul, he was kept locked up in the house for the entire seven years he was alive, with little to no knowledge of the world outside the shrine's borders. Despite the severity of his house arrest, he's very well-taken care of: he's on friendly terms with Mikoto and all the other residents of the shrine, there's a servant to cook and clean for them all, and he has his "bodyguard" Kurogitsune to play with and keep him company. But the constant spiritual strain of being Shin's vessel means that, unlike his companions, he needs a Meal to live, not just to grow. By the start of the game, Yue's so lacking in energy that he sleeps for most of the day, and faints more than once. So you might consider it fate that, when Kurogitsune sneaks him out to see a festival, he happens to run into two different boys (Tsubaki and Akiyoshi) who catch his attention.

The incident at the festival leads to Mikoto explaining (in the vaguest terms possible) that those boys were potential Meals and that Yue should befriend one and bring him home (presumably so that the adults could help him actually complete the process). And so he spends the next few days meeting, befriending, and having fun with his new targets. The problem with this is that he himself isn't all that willing to devour the first and only friends he's ever made. There's also the fact that the principal at the local kindergarten was apparently devoured by an akujiki, leading everyone but Yue and his friends to forget he ever existed. While the three embark on their amateur investigation spree, a mysterious man named Sagano also shows up and threatens Yue's life. The same man later shows up at Akiyoshi's house, taking up residence there as a friend of his father. Sagano takes advantage of this situation, hinting to Akiyoshi that putting out the lights at the shrine will help with his dream of defeating the ayakashi. These lights are in fact what keeps up the barrier which protects the shrine, and so putting them out would put all of the ayakashi there in danger.

Meanwhile, the boys' investigation is cut short on Yue's fifth day in town, when Tsubaki gets captured by akujiki. Sagano appears again, leading them to where the akujiki are, and Yue and Akiyoshi are able to successfully save their friend, but Yue gets hurt in the process, leading the other two to escort him back to the shrine. There, Akiyoshi gives in to the need to try putting out the lights, thus successfully letting Sagano in through the barrier. Yue runs after him in the chaos, leaving Tsubaki alone - and Sato, the priest of the shrine, takes advantage of this moment to sacrifice him in a method which basically turns him into a Meal for Mikoto, Yue, and Shin all at once. With her energy restored, Mikoto is successfully able to repel Sagano, after which Yue is told to make Akiyoshi into his next Meal.

But in this particular story path, Yue absolutely refuses to let Akiyoshi get hurt, allows Sagano and Akiyoshi to escape, and is subsequently confined to his room as punishment until he gives in to the fact that he should have eaten the one friend he had left. In the end, Yue willingly confines himself there for the rest of his life, knowing that Sato will leave Akiyoshi alone for as long as he does so.

Personality: Yue is a friendly kid, one canonly described with words such as "curious," "absent-minded," and "suspicious." All three of these are true, in their own ways: having been locked away in a Shinto shrine all his life, he's acutely aware of the fact he knows very little of the outside world, and when given the chance, tries the best he can to remedy that. His lack of knowledge and proper social skills works against him though - he doesn't understand why wearing his mask when there isn't a festival might be considered strange, and sees nothing wrong with chatting up strangers or wandering unannounced through a school in the middle of the day. But he has no ill intentions, and genuinely enjoys the companionship and learning experiences he gains from his adventures, taking pleasure in the simplest things from a nap shared with a friend to the prospect of eating cotton candy. He enjoys helping people too if it's not a chore, and tends to stick up for people or shoulder blame himself if it's applicable. (Like saying he's to blame for sneaking to the festival, and not to punish Kurogitsune alone.) The absent-minded part comes in with the fact that he doesn't always pay attention to where he's going, and sometimes asks questions other people might think were kind of obvious, plus the fact he's half-asleep so often. He's the kind of good kid who'll flinch and apologize when he gets in trouble, and even apologizes to threatening strangers if they seem to disapprove of something about him. This isn't to say he never bites - when annoyed or otherwise not bothered to properly reply, his retorts include such childish things as name-calling or stealing things for an impromptu game of tag. Likewise, he'll argue when he feels he's in the right, and if curious enough, will casually break rules in order to get something he wants. Obviously though, he isn't a particularly belligerent person, and the worst he tends to do is complain that someone's being mean, or that he doesn't want to do something. He has a lazybones attitude towards life as a whole, his exhaustion often getting the better of curiosity.

All that aside, he does have his serious moments. The issue of his "Meal" comes up often, for example, and while most of his worries are never voiced, he does go out of his shell to ask for other people's thoughts on who his meal should be, and what the importance of the meal really is. But he only asks one question, to one person, and only when they ask what he's thinking. This reticence is a way to keep others from worrying about him; the only complaints he ever openly makes to people are health-related, such as exhaustion or hunger, or silly things such as saying fortune telling's a pain. When asked if anything's wrong, or if there's a reason for his questions about the Meal, he denies it and lets the matter rest. In one path in the PSP remake of the game, Yue is confronted with the realization that he actually feels the need to eat his new friend Tsubaki (as opposed to just understanding that he needs to do so eventually), and only manages to voice his fears to Mikoto when she finds him walking around in the middle of the night and asks him what's wrong. But generally Yue keeps these things to himself (and to Shin), wondering what will happen, what he should do, whether he's even able to do it, never telling anyone else his worries. Likewise, he tries not to pry into other people's affairs, backing down if they don't want to answer - though it's still pretty obvious that he really wants to know.

When faced with something particularly dangerous, his first reaction tends to be to freeze up like a deer in headlights; unsure what to think or say or do, he absolutely fails at avoiding attack or injury, and does get laid low once or twice because of this. He dislikes fighting as a general rule, preferring to try to talk it out if given the opportunity, or even when...there really isn't an opportunity. On the other hand, when faced with the prospect of someone particularly close to him getting hurt, especially someone he thinks of as needing his help, he'll immediately run to their aid. For example, he jumps to protect Tsubaki and Akiyoshi when akujiki attack (like a guard dog) but is less likely to do the same for his fellow ayakashi (who are generally able to take care of themselves), and entirely unlikely to attempt helping those humans whose faces he can't even see. (The most he feels for them tends to be something along the lines of how you'd feel for stray dogs or roadkill; a little compassion, but not enough to want to do anything about it.) In other words: he's totally vulnerable when surprised in battle, or when faced with any sort of danger whatsoever, but will give it everything he has if someone he cares about is the one in danger. Sadly his only actual fighting methods are to run away or act as a flimsy human shield, his only useful spiritual attack being saved for instances when running away is not an option.

As for the voice in Yue's head: Shin has yet to have a proper appearance, or even his own lines in the game, but it's stated that Yue has inherited some of his speech patterns. Judging by Yue's replies in their conversations, it seems he's often cheerful and joking, laughing when Sato says he wished Shin could have let them know he was awake, and teasing Yue while talking about his day. He generally lets Yue do whatever he wants, lending him his powers when asked, and rarely if ever takes over (the only times he does are to help Yue escape when he was doing his deer in headlights acts, and during a fight to protect Tsubaki.) But when he himself gets interested in something, he'll hint at it to Yue, and - if the hints don't get through - may actively push him towards it. He only ever does this once, sending them to a field outside the shrine when Yue decides he's too lazy to investigate the thing Shin's gotten so interested in. He's also willing to sacrifice everything to protect those he loves, and it's that determination that led to the situation they're in: an entire town spirited away so that ayakashi can roam in peace, and Shin without a body to call his own. Basically, he's much like Yue, doing what they want when they feel like it, taking most things in stride, staying positive despite the circumstances...and failing miserably to think about his own safety when the safety of others is more important.
Abilities/Powers: Yue is possessed by the fox spirit Shin, who lost his body long before Yue was born, and they often chat, though Yue generally does it when he thinks nobody else is listening, because it kinda looks like he's talking to himself. On the incredibly rare occasions that Shin takes over, or even just lends his power, he has the ability to use immensely powerful foxfire; this fire is apparently strong enough to totally destroy lesser monsters (lesser in power, not size) but it's also a one-shot skill, as one use takes all of Yue's energy and leaves him barely able to stand.

Yue's personal powers include...well, being raised the way he was has led to him looking unnatural himself, as well as giving off a not-entirely-human aura. He's unfazed by cold weather, his weakness being on a more spiritual than physical level, and so while he's likely to catch colds and get fevers and actually feel cold when he's low on energy, it's because of that lack of energy, not because the actual outside temperature is freezing. He needs very little - if any - physical food to survive, though it helps. He's also inherited that ayakashi vision problem where he can't tell humans apart, and needs to eat people to survive. How exactly he goes about "eating" people is never really properly explained, though it's been pretty much confirmed that what he ends up devouring is their soul, as he gains not only energy but also the memories of his victim. He also doesn't need to do it very often, though of course the more energy he uses, the more quickly that need is going to come up again.

I'm thinking of maybe putting up a permissions post asking if anyone's willing to have their characters listed under "potential Meal", once he gets in.

Sample Entry Two: It was strange. He'd woken up, expecting today to be just like yesterday, and the day before that, and every other day for however many days he'd been sitting alone in his room (honestly, he'd lost track a while ago). But this wasn't his room - it wasn't anywhere he recognized at all, but most importantly, it wasn't his room. What if Sato-san found out? What would happen to Akiyoshi? It was the fastest Yue had ever gotten up, stumbling (groggily, clumsily, his limbs heavy from disuse) out of the room he found himself in to try to find out how to get back.

But of course nothing came of that. The door lead to nowhere he recognized; the window showed a picture of humans saying they were safe. Eventually he found himself wandering aimlessly around outside, carefully picking his barefoot way through the rubble strewn across the ground. He was safe here, said the sign. They were all safe here. It felt like a lie, but what did it matter? He'd somehow managed to break his side of the bargain. Akiyoshi was in trouble, and he didn't have any idea how to get back. Whether he himself was safe seemed about as important as the food he'd barely touched back home.

But he could still be safe, couldn't he? said the coaxing, gentle voice in his head. You'll never find out if you give up now. Yue stood silently for a moment, alone, contemplating those words in the rubble of a city that felt like the rubble of his hope. "....You're right." He touched a hand to his mask, a reluctant smile floating across his face. "I'll manage somehow. We'll manage. After all...he'll wait for us, won't he?" The words were more hope than belief, but still, they were enough. Quietly, calmly, he started the trek back to....

....where had he woken up again? He hadn't really paid attention, in his panic. Maybe that building over there....and so he went.
