Applications Two

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
The next application opening date is Friday 16th January, 7pm EST.
The next application processing date is Friday 23rd January, 7pm EST.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

To see what we are looking for:
Canon Characters:

Margaret "Peggy" Carter | MCU | reserved

[personal profile] agtcarter 2014-04-13 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:

One of the important things to note about Peggy is her professionalism. She's dedicated to her job and always puts one hundred percent in no matter what the circumstances are. She has to deal with a lot of prejudice due to her circumstances as a woman serving within the military. Her post is one that many would think would be best performed by a man. Peggy rises above this prejudice and disregard for her abilities with strength, poise and grace, refusing to let anyone think that she isn't capable. For example, when a soldier questions her credibility, she punches him in the jaw without a second thought.

Aside from her cool exterior, Peggy has a temper and can sometimes be jealous. This is shown by her reaction to Steve being kissed by one of the other women who worked at a desk in the unit. After they argue, Peggy says that it doesn't bother her, it clearly does and this is proven a few hours later when Steve shows her the shield he will be using as Captain America. Before, Steve and Howard were unsure of how effective the shield was. Peggy picks up a pistol and fires it at the shield, the bullets bouncing off it.

However, Peggy is also an emphatic person, in tune with her emotions and full of passion. She worries if someone she cares about is in danger and would do anything to help them, even if it meant endangering her own life. Peggy expresses grief when she believes that she has lost Steve when he decided to take down Schmidt; she had developed some feelings for him and knowing that she would never see him again does have an emotional impact upon Peggy. When she met him, Peggy saw something in Steve that no one else did and throughout the time she knew him, she never lost faith and always stood beside him, believing in his goodness and his heroism.

Peggy has seen the horrors of war and has been through a lot in her time. Despite this, she always remains calm and professional in a fight, shooting at the driver in a getaway car without flinching. She helps Steve in another battle alongside other men and does so without question. Peggy is extremely loyal and would always fight with those she counts as friends and comrades. If you gain her respect, then you can pretty much guarantee that she would back you up no matter what the situation was.

She has a very dry wit and enjoys a bit of banter. Her interactions with Howard Stark are an example of that. Peggy isn't without a sense of humour and knows how to have fun if the situation calls for it. She is also very well-presented and suitably dressed: as shown by her wearing full uniform when she's on duty and the red dress when she walks into the bar. Peggy sometimes likes to make an impression; whether it be a professional or personal one.

The Peggy shown in the Agent Carter One Shot is still very much the same Peggy in the Captain America movie but with a few more deeper insights into her personality. She undertakes a mission on her own- one that was supposed to be for five agents- even when it would be a violation of a direct order. It's not the first time Peggy had done that, but she believes in doing the right thing despite what her superiors tell her. Her boss in this instance is sexist and tasked Peggy with decoding messages instead of going out into the field. This displays a kind of rebellious streak, but could also be seen as reckless because of what Peggy faced when she took on the mission. She almost got herself killed in the process. However, no matter how much the odds are stacked against her, Peggy would take a risk in order to achieve whatever it was she had to achieve. In the end, she is rewarded for her bravery when she is offered an opportunity to co-run SHIELD with Howard Stark. He recognises her potential and knows that she was up for the job. This sets Peggy on a new path, one she knows she can do no matter what obstacles lay ahead.

In short, Peggy Carter is a compassionate, loyal and brilliant. Maintaining grace and doing her job with dignity. Someone you can count on in a fight. But not without her flaws.

Abilities/Powers:

Peggy is an excellent marks-woman and is skilled with a firearm. She is trained in combat situations and is a lot more physically fit than other women from her era due to her training. Peggy is also fluent in several languages due to her experience as a spy and can pick up things fairly quickly.

In the one shot it is clear just how skilled Peggy is in hand-to hand combat when she takes down a group of men with reasonable ease. She's resourceful, using what objects or even one of the men she captured to her advantage.

She would also be able to understand military protocol and procedures as well as being able to train someone to learn them. Peggy is intelligent and resourceful, putting all her skills and knowledge to good use when the situation calls for it.

Peggy has no supernatural powers or abilities.

Items/Weapons: Which three items and/or weapons will your character arrive with?

Peggy will arrive with:

- Her sidearm
- Her purse
- Small photo of Steve (pre-serum Steve)

Sample Entry One:

voice

[Peggy was not accustomed to waking up in a strange room with five empty beds and her immediate thought was that she had been captured and taken to an enemy camp. She slipped off the bed, checking her pockets only to find something that wasn't there before. Frowning, Peggy took the object out and examined it closely- it was unlike any technology she had even seen. She tapped it a few times before it suddenly sprang to life. On the screen it said 'voice' so Peggy began to speak, hoping that it would activate something else, a clue to where she was.]

Hello? This is Peggy Carter, formerly of the SSR. I have woken up in an unfamiliar location and I need immediate assistance.

[Despite her professional tone, there was an edge of worry in her voice. Peggy couldn't help being concerned. Was this a test orchestrated by her new employer? She wasn't sure.]

I'm in an empty room with five other beds and I am unharmed. No recollection of how I got here either. If you can trace my location through this device, I will keep it switched on for the time being.

Please respond as soon as possible. I await further instructions.

Sample Entry Two:

Note: The following sample is based off elements within Haven and I hope it is acceptable, despite the tweaks I made.

Don't panic. Peggy told herself as she explored the unfamiliar territory, looking for any clue as to where she was. Her plan was to do some reconnaissance before making camp for the night; it was just a matter of finding the perfect spot. Ideally, high up with plenty of cover should she come under attack. At least she had her gun on her. But even that wouldn't last long unless she found some spare ammunition. Peggy knew that she had to find something else to defend herself with or a radio to contact someone within the agency for a rescue.

After some time she came across what looked like an abandoned hospital. A feeling of hope surged in her chest as she crept around the building carefully, looking for an entrance. There mightn't be anyone around but at the very least, there could be medical supplies and food. Even a radio. She had to be careful as well as resourceful, keep her cool like she was trained to do and not be afraid. Peggy had been in worse situations like this and come out on the other side even stronger than before. There were people counting on her back home, and she was about to embark on an incredible opportunity which would show all her doubters just how damn good of an agent Peggy was.

She would never doubt herself nor her abilities in the field or in the office, and Peggy was determined to not let that happen here. Taking a breath, she entered the abandoned building and ventured into the unknown.

The real test had just begun.

Rita Mordio | Tales of Vesperia | Reserved

[personal profile] blastias 2014-04-13 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Name: Aly
Contact Info: [plurk.com profile] elympios
Other Characters Played: Hubert Oswell, Leia Rolando, Souji Okita.
Requested apartment: Housing block 13, if possible!

Character Name: Rita Mordio
Canon: Tales of Vesperia
Canon Point: After leaving the Blade Drifts of Zopheir, following Sylph’s creation.
Background/History: Tales of Vesperia; Rita

Personality:
Rita is the sort of person who could easily leave a bad first impression on those she meets. Not particularly the most personable, she’s abrasive, defensive, has a tendency to let her temper flare to violent levels, and is often rife with biting and snide remarks. Among her peers — fellow mages in Aspio — she’s considered strange and an outcast, and perhaps it’s not for no reason.

At the age of fifteen, Rita is already an accomplished blastia researcher. She’s known as the “Genius Mage of Aspio,” and it’s not without good reason, as her research and work in the field began at the age of ten, and in five years time, she’s accomplished enough to become a notable name. Living the majority of her life orphaned, she’s accustomed to being alone, with little in the way of human companions. Prior to meeting the party that would later become her group of companions, she was a loner who relied only on the blastia to be her friends. Though they were inanimate objects, each blastia is always given a name — she’s said that they were her most reliable friends, and she treats each blastia with love and care as such.

Of course, these behavioral patterns, while nice for blastia, don’t exactly equate to practicality when dealing with other humans, and as such, it takes Rita quite a while to let anyone see the other sides of her. Instead, we often get the brash and abrasive, a person who knows what she’s talking about, but has zero patience for things she doesn’t like. Her disinterest in others at first has her referring to Estelle only by her full first name, Estellise, despite insistence to call her otherwise. She treats Karol (and his childish stupidity and lack of courage) like her personal punching bag, combats Yuri with biting sarcasm, is often ready to (or does) hurt Raven for his perverted commentary — it’s like this for most. When she first encounters Judith (disguised in her dragon rider costume) destroying the Hermes blastia, she immediately starts calling her a “Dragon Freak” and has intent to go after this mysterious person every single time in an effort to stop destroying the precious blastia.

But though her nature can be harsh, it doesn’t mean she’s not a caring person. She’s often one of the first (if not the first) to come to Estelle’s defense, she was genuinely upset when she realized what Raven had sacrificed for them (and subsequently gave him one of the harsher punishments when he showed up okay later on), and she laid claim to looking “everywhere” for Yuri when he’d gone missing after the events at Zaude. Even when it comes to Karol or Judith’s at times reckless actions, Rita shows concern for their well-being. Much as she can be very temperamental, it doesn’t change the fact that under the hard shell is a kind person. Of course, because of the rough exterior, it also means that much of Rita’s good intent is shadowed by denial and getting flustered — she’d much the resident tsundere of the party in that regard. Even basic back and forth compliments can be greeted with blushing, pouting and general varying degrees of “i-it’s not like i did a nice thing because I like you or anything!!” This goes double if someone else points out how concerned she was for someone else, of course. With each person, it takes a specific set of circumstances with each person for her to warm up to them, but she does eventually treat each member of the party like extended family — Repede included, whom she eventually relents with and refers to by name instead of just “dog.” She has more than a few turning points with Judith after butting heads over blastia; once Rita understands the reasoning for Judith’s actions, she comes to understand it and not hold it against anyone. Much as she hates knowing they’re being destroyed, she doesn’t close her mind to the facts and reasons.

Ultimately, though what Rita lacks in social graces, she more than makes up for with her genius. She can work out blastia formulas very quickly, grasp complex concepts, and then both master and refine techniques much quicker than many of her colleagues. Even when there are holes in theories and plans, she knows how to work around them, and has a very good understanding about the science that makes up Terca Lumireis, and how to take their worst situations and turn them for the better. She’s able to do things few others could do — such as being able to shift Estelle’s use of power so it drew from her own life force rather than disturbing the aer balance and thrusting the world into further catastrophe. Though it’s the sort of thing she’d consider a temporary fix, it’s also one she managed to do in a single night’s time.

Further, her theories and plans for neutralizing the world’s blastia and converting aer into mana by way of creating spirits was one that astounds in every way. Though her results mirrored something resembling what Hermes had documented, Rita found a way to successfully pull it off and execute it well before it was ever expected to — as in, making it immediate versus it taking thousands of years over the natural progression of time. Rather than it being simply the way things evolve, she finds a way to not only make it something that exists, but seems to be on a fast-track path to making it the norm, a way to replace the cores in the blastia that will no longer work.

The fact that she was able to succeed using the information she found in Zaude alongside her own knowledge to take apatheia and transform the former Entelexia into reborn spirits is a true testament to her wits. But if that weren’t enough, Rita further qualifies for something known as the Mishka Doctoral Degree, something very few have accomplished and is considered to be esteemed. Rita’s genius trumps a lot of things, when it comes to her attributes.

Her brains and her work ethic are things that shine through in other aspects of her life, as well. She’s an avid reader as a result, and can be often found with a nose in a book. She considers cooking something that’s like science — putting ingredients together like some kind of chemistry. This makes her food not the best on one’s palate, but still edible. Most of the foods she’s best at cooking are the types she enjoys to eat, as well. Simple dishes that can be eaten with one hand: sandwiches, rice balls, fries. She’s also a fan of sweets, including an indulgence of gels… which is one of the few things that represents her comparatively young age compared to the rest of the party, given that they’re supposedly produced with a kid’s taste in mind. It goes to show that as mature as she is about her work, and all the practicality she can have, Rita’s not quite grown up yet, even when she tries to act like it.

So even though she’s rough around the edges in some ways, and will likely never be as personable or outwardly charming as some of her other friends, Rita has plenty of merits. Her impatience and impulsive violent tendencies do give way to the kinder and thoughtful influences of her friends (Estelle especially), and her abilities as a mage excel enough to help change the world and rebuild it into a better place.

Rita Mordio | Tales of Vesperia | Reserved

[personal profile] blastias 2014-04-13 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Abilities/Powers:
Rita’s primary fighting force is her ability with magic. As a mage, and a genius one at that, Rita excels at the more complex formulas used to carry out powerful offensive magic. Though she’s unable to do it entirely on her own — she does currently need her blastia to be able to do so, there are few others who are on her level of skill.

Her offense magic spans a wide range of elemental attributes: Fire, Earth, Water, Wind, and Dark, and can do varying degrees of damage based on a number of factors. Some are due to being more powerful spells (Tidal Wave being a more powerful water spell than Splash, for example), but Rita’s also skilled enough to adjust the strength of her skills in other ways. With longer incantations and formulas, she can make the same spells hit harder, while shorter incantations can do less than their normal damage. Should she go into overlimit mode, she can override her casting incantations almost completely to perform spells.

Rita also has a few basic strike artes that she can perform, though they’re not particularly powerful — often times, it’s enough to stun her enemies to give her breathing room to cast. When timed right, Rita’s also capable of following up her artes with a “fatal strike,” a move that can instantly kill weaker enemies, and do heavy damage on stronger ones. A full list of the artes Rita is capable of performing can be found here.

Items/Weapons:
- Bodhi Blastia
- Scroll (Death Contrast +2α)
- Book (Thanatologos)

Sample Entry: musebox post.
Sample Entry Two:
They were running out time.

In her head, Rita could see nothing but formulas: numbers and letters whizzing by in a fury, and she needed to pick and choose all the right ones. At the rate they were going, the world was little more than a ticking time bomb, and she absolutely knew that something needed to be done about it, and fast. She found herself tapping her cheek, deep in thought as she stared at core of a unused bodhi blastia. It wasn’t just numbers and formulas she needed to figure out, either. It was also how practical her idea was. Could this be converted to mana the way they panned? And even if they had spirits created from every single core on the planet, would they be able to harness that to replace all the technology they’d become so reliant on?

In theory, of course it worked. But it was still rough around the edges, and they had no way of knowing what that many spirits would mean for Terca Lumireis. Not just the bodhi blastia that allowed them to fight, but barrier blastia that protected the cities, aque blastia, lux blastia. There were so many types that the last thousand years and caused their society to be so reliant on… Would spirits help? They had their own intelligence and will in a sense, even if they were somehow one with the planet. It was one of those things Rita couldn’t be sure of until they tried, and of course, she wouldn’t give up until then.

Ugh, one thing at a time. She had to remind herself not to get too far ahead in her thought process. It was easy to stray off course and think of the what-ifs — she had to think of consequences, but maybe it was a bit much when dealing with the immediate, much smaller scale project in front of her.

Not that she could get anything done with Karol rambling on thoughtlessly about hypothetical guild business. Rambling, and rambling until—

“Would you shut up already!?” The words came from her mouth with no warning, her glare at Karol intense and burning with a fury of a mage who was really at her wits’ end. As she heaved a sigh, she stood up, fists clenched tightly at her sides. Rita hardly even noticed that Karol had already prepared to dodge any incoming fireballs before stomping right past him and towards the door leading out of their room at the inn. “Forget it, keep bumbling on like an idiot. I’m going outside for some air.”

She swung the door open, heading for the building’s exit in annoyance. She could hear Estelle’s light footsteps from behind, but she didn’t bother to request not to be followed. Instead, continued until she was outside and waited — surely, Estelle’s input or encouragement would end up giving Rita a push in the right direction to clear her head and finish her little project before they left Capua Nor the next morning.

Rapunzel | Tangled | Unreserved | 2/3

[personal profile] coronae 2014-04-13 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:
Rapunzel is and always has been a vibrant young woman (although when she was smaller she was admittedly a vibrant young child). She rarely seems to have any idle time, preferring to spend her time productively or at least in fun ways. Stuck in her tower, she woke up every morning before seven and did all the cleaning and cooking before going on to just jam as much as humanly possible into every minute. Candle-making, baking, puzzling, reading, climbing, painting...you name it, Rapunzel was doing it. It's hard to find a moment in the movie where she actually sits still without something to occupy her. The nearest would be when she's listening to Eugene's past, and that still counts as "doing something". While waiting for the lantern ceremony to start, as well, she seems unable to sit entirely idle, instead making patterns in the water with flowers handed to her by Eugene.

Given her dislike for idle time - or rather her inability to even have any, preferring to stuff every second of every day - it should be no surprise that Rapunzel enjoys new experiences and ideas. She can admittedly be a little nervous and torn about this earlier on in the movie, but as it progresses she gets somewhat more confident in herself and in her desire to see and do everything there is in the world so long denied to her. She has absolutely no problem jumping into new things. That is, she starts out somewhat hesitant about it, or at least torn about what Mother Gothel would think about it, but the fact that she wants to do it is clear. From the second she takes the plunge and puts one foot down on the grass after leaving her tower - because she does hover a minute before taking the step and defying her mother in that biggest of ways - Rapunzel is very clearly trying to do as much and see as much as possible. While she's nervous - jumping at bunny rabbits, anyone? - by the time she and Eugene reach the capital of Corona Rapunzel is confident enough to run through the town doing pretty much everything: reading at a book store, eating cupcakes, dancing, and so on.

Given all the hobbies mentioned, some of which are fairly academic, it should be noted that Rapunzel is a fairly intelligent girl, despite her lack of formal schooling or access to much of the outside world at all. In spite of the lack of formal schooling she charted the stars, apparently without Mother Gothel's knowledge or instructions, and presumably just from her own curiosity. She's apparently good with chess, as well, and all those hobbies? Well, Mother Gothel didn't seem that interested in them, so presumably Rapunzel taught herself most of them. One of the first things she does in Corona is devour books in the library, too. However, while Rapunzel is bright, she was also locked up in a tower for eighteen years, even if the lock was more mental than physical. She's fairly naive about a lot of things in the real world, and relies on Eugene's street smarts and, well, common sense in order to make it outside of the tower. The fact that she realized she would need a guide to take her to see the lanterns is another example of her intelligence - while Rapunzel has her shortcomings in knowledge she's generally willing to admit them and ask for help, which is a good thing.

Despite the fact that for the first eighteen years of her life Rapunzel had no other company than Mother Gothel and Pascal, her chameleon pet slash best friend, Rapunzel is amazingly friendly and outgoing. Considering that she could not have possibly had a lot of time to refine her social skills, this is actually pretty impressive. She's able to persuade Eugene to take her to see the lanterns easily enough (...admittedly via blackmail rather than awesome interpersonal skills, but she did recognize an obvious lever and pulled on it) and to talk down a pub of angry ruffians with a speech about dreams, of all things, and then in the capital of Corona appears to fit in with the townspeople almost effortlessly, playing with children and creating art on the ground with chalk and pulling various townspeople into the traditional dance despite their token protests. Rapunzel likes people, and often enough in the movie that seems to be returned.

This is not to say she is always all sweetness and light with people (although she does have a noted aversion to upsetting people she likes). Rapunzel's initial reaction to Eugene climbing into her tower is to knock him out cold with a frying pan (which admittedly is a really good reaction to some random dude breaking into your home, let's be real) but not only does she do that, she knocks him out twice more. One of the times she knocks him out solely to re-hide the tiara she's blackmailing him with! She also blatantly uses the fact that it's her birthday to get Max and Eugene to get along (which is, well, sort of dirty fighting for a Disney Princess)! Rapunzel is actually pretty willing to throw down and do what has to be done, which might be a little surprising to people. When Eugene refuses to take her to see the lanterns, she basically tell shim the only way he's getting the tiara back is if he does it and refuses to take no for an answer. When the ruffians attack Eugene, she tries to get them to knock it off physically before she resorts to shouting at them (...really, trying it the other way around might have been more sensible, as she was shorter and slighter than like everyone in that pub). And when she realizes she's been lied to later on (which is past her canon point, but the reaction is worth noting!) Rapunzel snaps at Mother Gothel and refuses to go along quietly. And on a more general interaction note, Rapunzel is pretty darn willing to sass people who are not Mother Gothel. That is to say, at her canon point? She sasses Eugene a lot and teases him as well, and occasionally gives lip to Pascal (...because apparently she has sassy conversations with her mute chameleon bff but hey she WAS in that tower for a long time) but wouldn't dream of back-talking Mother Gothel, and never has done.

It would be impossible to write a personality section for Rapunzel without addressing her relationship with Mother Gothel. For eighteen years Gothel raised her, and Rapunzel believed her mother loved and cherished her, though it was somewhat more accurate in reality to say that Mother Gothel loved and cherished her hair. That reality was not something Rapunzel has seen as of yet at her canon point, however. Her earnest belief is that her mother loves her, and that Gothel intended to protect her by keeping her in the tower. Although she did refuse to return with Gothel after healing Eugene by the campfire, Rapunzel had not yet seen the lanterns and was by that point determined to do so. She had immediately before at the fire said that she didn't know whether or not she was going back to the tower. Rather, her immediate reaction was a huge "NO!" but right after a hesitant "yes". Rapunzel was torn by the fact that she loved the outside world - had always wanted to go there - and the fact that she very much loved (and loves, in her canon point) Mother Gothel. Rapunzel's initial plan involves going to see the lanterns and coming back before her mother was ever the wiser, even. In the first part of the movie, Rapunzel's so torn she goes through moods faster than anything, from elated to be outside to hating herself for "being a horrible daughter".

Mother Gothel raised Rapunzel not to be the independent, confident girl she grew into being over the course of the film (at her canon point she is somewhat more confident than she was at the start, but hasn't yet denounced Mother Gothel entirely nor realized she is the lost princess of Corona). Gothel did give Rapunzel a home and brought her back trinkets and things to do from her journeys outside, and apparently they had tea together in the afternoons whenever Gothel was home (this was A Thing in a supplemental book!) as well as other meals. Rapunzel was never actually well and truly neglected - not outright, at least. She was apparently left alone for days at a time sometimes, but she never appeared to resent this at all. Instead Rapunzel lived in apparent hope that someday her mother would allow her to leave the tower, once she was older, perhaps. It took eighteen years for Rapunzel to even consider leaving on her own without her mother's leave, as well as a shouted declaration that Rapunzel was never leaving the tower. Even then, Rapunzel was clearly torn about it. But the fact that she simply had never defied Gothel from love and obedience is an important facet of her personality, here. Rapunzel even made herself believe that she liked it in her tower, even if she occasionally resorted to naming trees from boredom (supplemental book, again).

However, Gothel's personality came into play with how Rapunzel was raised as well, whether or not it was specifically manipulative at times. Some of Gothel's comments appeared to just be Gothel being Gothel; she would diminish and undermind Rapunzel's confidence in herself with comments about her, and didn't seem to believe Rapunzeel was capable of doing anything. And when Rapunzel did something and tied to tell Gothel about it, her mother shouted her down, and then made it out to be Rapunzel's fault, which was outright manipulative. The entire sequence of "Mother Knows Best" was also outright manipulative; Gothel kept Rapunzel in the tower with fear, making the world and all the people in it out to be evil and unsafe, and making Rapunzel believe she would never last in the world outside, no matter how much she yearned for it. And Rapunzel believed her. Part of why Rapunzel was so nervous about leaving the tower - besides never having done so and being so unfamiliar with the world outside - was because she believed all the things Gothel had said. She even checked Eugene's teeth when he came up her tower, to see if they were pointy! Rapunzel was raised into insecurity, and it does show through even at her chosen canon point. Gothel is able to push Rapunzel off-center with one conversation, and it isn't until she sees the lanterns - after her chosen canon point! - that Rapunzel decides to put aside her worries and give Eugene the tiara without thinking he would up and leave her immediately.

Despite all of this, even when Rapunzel does realize that she has been lied to, her first instinct when Gothel trips to fall out of the tower is to reach out towards her "mother", although she doesn't move fast enough or enough at all to save the old woman. But this shows just how ingrained her relationship with Gothel is, as does it show her compassion, which is also a big part of Rapunzel's personality. Because Rapunzel does have a big heart! And she's brave. While she's never been outside the tower and is very much afraid of all the things Gothel told her, Rapunzel still takes the plunge to go outside. When Eugene is in trouble with the ruffians she gives everything to try and help him. When they're being chased by the guards and the Stabbington brothers both, Rapunzel helps again, her bravery and resourcefulness shining through. And again, in the tower after her current canon point, she is willing to give up her freedom in order to help Eugene. It's telling of her character that Gothel allows Rapunzel to go and try to heal Eugene after she promises to go with Gothel and never struggle; Rapunzel keeps her promises, and as the woman who raised her, Gothel would know that better than anyone, trusting the girl to keep her word, however horrible the things she was promising.

To sum it up? Rapunzel is a resourceful, vibrant girl who very much wants to live her life, although she's also plagued by insecurities and the occasional sassy impulse, naivety and a war within herself about being an obedient, loving daughter, or finally staying out in the light she'd so longer to be in. She is many things, and some of those things are a teenage girl still settling into herself and finding out who she is (in more ways than just literally finding out she's the lost princess, which she hasn't done yet anyway).

Abilities/Powers:
The biggest power of note for Rapunzel? Her hair. As those familiar with her canon would know, Rapunzel's long golden hair becomes long golden glowing hair when she sings a certain song ("flower gleam and glow..."). When in contact with injuries as it glows it has healing abilities; for most of her life she'd mostly used it to reverse the aging process of Mother Gothel, who had kidnapped her solely for that. More than that, her hair seems to be really strong (it doesn't break when people climb it, or when she uses it to pull things to her) and the ends seem to be either prehensile-ish or Disney Magicked, as she can grab things with her hair. It is sort of ridiculous, but hey, she's a Disney Princess. Her hair doesn't seem to weigh her down, and she's weirdly acrobatic and able to run around, but Rapunzel also seems to be strong enough to haul someone up a tower every day and do pretty much all the household chores, so there is that.

Typically of a Disney Princess, Rapunzel is good with animals, as well. She also has a variety of hobbies/talents ranging from cleaning, cooking, botany, geology, astronomy, candle-making, knitting, chess...all the sorts of things you'd, well, look into doing to occupy your time when you're stuck in a tower for eighteen years. Also, she's good with swinging a frying pan around, although she has been known to accidentally hit herself with it if she gets too cocky. Whoops.
Items/Weapons: Her frying pan, the flag Eugene got her at the festival, and her hairbrush.

Eugene "Flynn Rider" Fitzherbert | Tangled | Unreserved | 2/3

[personal profile] panhandled 2014-04-13 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:
Eugene Fitzherbert is an orphan. As a child he had nothing to his name, not a family or a home or wealth. This is far from the most important thing about him, but it does inform some of his actions. All he did have were quick-wits, charm, the Tales of Flynnigan Rider (an adventure book he used to read to the other children in his orphanage, which displays some of the hidden compassion in his nature), and a desire for more. He took on the identity of his swashbuckling hero, styling himself Flynn Rider, although unlike the hero Flynnigan, Flynn was a thief. Arrogant, selfish, cocky, and primarily concerned with money. For the first half of the movie, Flynn cares only about regaining the stolen tiara from Rapunzel so he can be on his way. His dream was to have a private island, be alone, and have enormous piles of money surrounding him. Later he admits that Flynnigan Rider sounded like the best thing to a kid with nothing because he seemed to have everything, and he wanted to be able to do the things he hadn't been able to, growing up. Still, he also did just want an island with enormous piles of money, he even said so in the song "I Have A Dream". In other words, kind of a douchebag. A handsome, clever douchebag.

But it becomes clear over time that douchebag Flynn is more than his facade, the clarity beginning once he admits to Rapunzel that his real name is Eugene Fitzherbert. This admission comes when they both think they're going to die. Before his (presumed) death, Flynn - that is, Eugene - says that at least one person should know it. And when Rapunzel says she likes that name, it gets a genuine smile out of Eugene. They don't die, then, but that step of admitting his real name to Rapunzel is a huge one for Eugene's character development. He had never told it to anyone since leaving the orphanage and changing his name to that of his childhood hero. Admitting his name as Eugene Fitzherbert begins to unlock his good-hearted, compassionate side that was buried beneath selfishness and greed. Over the course of his time with Rapunzel, the facade fade-- from him beginning to legitimately care about her enjoying her birthday and about her achieving her dream to see the lanterns up close, to going so far as to find them a boat so she would have the very best view of the lanterns possible. Flynn Rider wouldn't have bothered with such a touchy-feely thing. The thief had only tried to get Rapunzel to change her mind and go home and return the stolen tiara, going so far as to take her to a known den of rogues to try to frighten her out of pursuing her dream and allowing him to much more quickly accomplish his. Eugene Fitzherbert "saw the light", so to speak, and realized that there are more important things than money and being alone-- like being with someone he cares about. He even spends the entire day with her leading up to the lanterns unprompted, and without complaint. The "without complaint" part is rare for him, in the movie.

Eugene is the straight-man, a common-sense deadpan normal guy in a world where girls have magical healing hair, horses battle runaway thieves with swords (the hell, Max), and ruffians sing about cutesy dreams after being given heartfelt speeches from lost princesses. Despite being an orphaned thief with a false identity, he is possibly the sanest person in the entire film (maybe the entire kingdom). While he puts on dramatic airs when he first meets Rapunzel ("I know not who you are, nor how I came to find you, but may I just say... Hi. How ya doin'?") he reverts to a deadpan when Rapunzel tries to be just as dramatic with him ("Something brought you here, Flynn Rider. Call it what you will... fate... destiny..." "A horse."); he states that he doesn't sing when the ruffians try to get him to sing about his dream, though he does so once he's at sword-point because he's practical in his core and doesn't like being stabbed; his reactions to pretty much everything Rapunzel does in between the deal they make and until they nearly drown is literally to just stare blankly and irritably at her and to occasionally try to convince her to turn the hell around, give him the tiara, and then part ways amicably.

Not that having common sense stopped him from, y'know, backstabbing guys called the Stabbington brothers or from climbing a random tower he stumbles upon, but.

With a healthy dose of deadpan common sense often comes with an equal helping of sass. Eugene is more than a little prone to sarcasm, or at the very least has a habit of not responding with more than an ounce of seriousness at any time, save a few more unfortunate moments (such as when he figures out Rapunzel is in danger, or when he's been stabbed-- though both are beyond his canon point). He does also manage seriousness when he's speaking to Rapunzel sometimes in things other than unfortunate moments, such as when he talks to her about being trapped in her tower, or tells her the story of poor orphan boy Eugene Fitzherbert, or when he tells her that the good things about dreams is that when you realize one, you get to find another one. These moments of seriousness and compassion are very real, but they are also things that nearly have to be earned. No one had ever gotten close enough to win them from him before he met Rapunzel. In general, Eugene is not always the most serious of people. He is lighthearted and good-natured (when not in a grumpy mood due to tiny blondes blackmailing him), just as he is clever and of quick wit. He is a laid-back man at heart, never quick to anger (frustrate, maybe) or be otherwise upset. For all his faults, Eugene is a level-headed man and good under pressure. Maybe not fantastic when faced with pure absurdity (see: her hair glows AND EVEN HEALS, how can you not freak out about that).

There are two types of heroics-- the swashbuckling, arrogant heroes who are nothing more than that in name, and then there are heroes that do things to help people. Eugene aspired to be the former, as Flynn Rider. The adventurous, lovable rogue-type (though "lovable" didn't seem to work out since it appears no one liked him, at least at the time when he and Rapunzel were cornered in a canyon). By the end, however, he evolves into an actual hero as he races to save Rapunzel and then to free Rapunzel of her obligation to heal him or keep Mother Gothel young by slicing off her healing hair as he lay dying (which could be also considered a final "fuck you" to the woman who mistreated Rapunzel and then stabbed him)-- these events occur after his canon-point, but it's clear that he has the potential for greatness. Such as giving up the tiara, the thing that had been his motivation for accompanying Rapunzel in the first place (which backfired badly, but the thought was nice). That is something that has happened at his canon-point. Eugene actually decided to give up the thing that had been his motivation for the entire film up to that point, trying to return it to the Stabbington brothers so he could return to Rapunzel and live out his new dream (though obviously this didn't actually work). See, Flynn Rider would have only saved his own skin and ran off for riches; Eugene Fitzherbert fell in love with a girl and did everything in his power to save her and her freedom.

But it should be said that Flynn isn't just some alter ego with nothing in common with Eugene, they are one man in the same. While it took becoming Eugene again to bring out more of his good side, he is still very much the narcissistic and flirtatious young adventurer with a clever wit and a rebellious nature. The difference is just in how they're utilized. It's not a case of good vs evil; even at his worst, Flynn was more cocky little shit than anything else (and so is Eugene, of course). Flynn Rider was everything Eugene dreamed of being, until he realized there are better dreams. But he did realize it, and so Eugene Fitzherbert is both the narcissistic and flirtatious adventurer with a penchant for sarcasm and the good-hearted young man willing to give up his past for the sake of his future and a girl with golden hair. He's grown up a bit.

Abilities/Powers:
Eugene has no magical powers to speak of, but he is a talented thief. Agile and quick-witted, Eugene was able to climb atop a castle and steal one of the kingdom's most precious object right behind the backs of the guards (then sassed them); he was also able to grab his satchel off of another person while climbing over them to safety without them noticing; he climbs Rapunzel's tower using only arrows and upper body strength. He also managed to evade brain damage even though he gets hit with a heavy frying pan enough to knock him out several times within about ten minutes... He knows horseback riding, fencing, and claims to have "superhuman good looks" (but that is just him being him, though he is handsome).

Items/Weapons: His satchel, with a wrong-nosed wanted poster of him (writing vanished, of course), and the stolen tiara inside.

Background/History: Canon wiki | Character wiki

I have a background write-up detailing Katara's history in particular in relation to the events of canon leading up to this point, if supplemental information would be useful.

Personality: As a general rule, Katara prides herself on being a mature, responsible young woman. Having grown up quickly and early out of necessity, the gratification she takes in these traits is almost a defense mechanism: with her mother murdered before her eyes as a young child and her father often gone off to fight a what felt like a futile war, Katara could have chosen to resent her life or to embrace it. Thankfully, she chose the latter, and this often reflects in how natural it is for her to turn to hope instead of despair when things get dire.

Family and community both played enormous roles in building a very broad and very deep sense of compassion in Katara as well. She worked tirelessly beside Kanna (her Gran-Gran), responsible for things from "mending pants" to "washing socks" to "assisting with childbirth." Many young people would balk at the weight of these ceaseless domestic duties, but by the time Katara is fourteen, she seems absolutely used to it: if she can help, then she will, just because it's the right thing to do.

This isn't to say that she is a perfect example of maturity and kindness. Far from it, in fact: while never malicious about it, the strength of her convictions coupled with her hard-working attitude sometimes blossoms from "impressive example of youthful maturity" directly to "overbearing, insufferably mothering, and bossy beyond belief." She rarely acknowledges the negative aspects of this, choosing to consider herself shrewd instead of pushy. This is evidenced in canon by her tendency to dictate within the Gaang things like bedtimes and schedules on top of an inclination to keep close inventory of how both time and money are being spent. Her intentions are pure -- she only wants what is best for the group, but the execution can at times be heavy handed.

Thankfully, Katara isn't just an overbearing know-it-all. She is not averse to hard work and will do whatever it takes to achieve a goal that she's either set or had set for her. Good at heart, Katara is armed with a bravery bolstered by her beliefs and is unwilling to sit on the sidelines while any kind of injustice is being committed... especially if she can believes she can do anything about it. Though she occasionally gives in to fits of self-doubt, she manages to maintain a firm resolve throughout most dire situations, and with that, the faith that everything will be alright in the end.

Despite Katara's carefully preserved projection of capability and level-headedness, she is still very much a teenage girl. She worries a lot, and can be extremely self-righteous when either argued with or confronted about her bossiness. She battles mentally with vague worries of abandonment -- her mother died when she was young and her father left a long time ago in a war effort, which explains for the most part the fierce protectiveness of her friends. She's simply afraid of losing them. Earlier, I touched upon how the circumstances surrounding Katara's upbringing contributed heavily toward her emotional maturity, and while that remains true, I do want to make a note of the fact that not everything resulting from that situation manifested in positive qualities. Despite having her brother as a reliable anchor, it was easy to feel isolated so far away from the rest of the world, and even more deeply cutting than that, lonely.

She can also hold a hell of a grudge, and is painfully untrusting when she has (or feels as if she has) been crossed. She is not a shrinking violet, electing to speak her mind, threaten when she feels threatened, and fight to the end when it is necessary.

Katara is also very hilarious and her jokes are definitely always funny, no matter what anyone else might think (or say outright to her face.)

Abilities/Powers: Katara is a water-bender, and a pretty dern good one, at that. She has the ability to manipulate water in any form, and is capable of using this skill both offensively and defensively. (Examples: Katara is able to do the obvious with her control of water, such as splashing people, freezing them into ice, forming it into a whip and smacking people with it.) At a canon point later than the one she's currently from, she also gains the ability to bloodbend when the moon is full, which allows her to basically "puppet" another human being by bending the water in their blood. This is NOT a skill Katara would ever willingly use, if the ability were gained in game; she regards it as taboo and a gross misuse of abilities.

Granted, Katara actually has to have water to manipulate it. She's not able to materialize it, just bend it, though it can be taken from sources such as sweat or ripped directly from plants. There's never much to be had from sources like that, but water is water, and sometimes situations are dire.

She also has basic healing powers as part of the whole water-bending schtick. She won't be bringing anyone back from the dead or repairing any severe internal hemorrhaging, but with enough time and concentration, she can take care of basic injuries and burns, given that they're fresh enough.

Items/Weapons: 1 – the pendant necklace given to her by her late mother, 2 – the water skin she carries with her on a sling, and 3 – the Fire Nation cloak she uses on the ship at her canon point to assist in maintaining cover.

Sample Entry:

(NOTE: From a previous game! Please let me know if anything about it needs to change.)

I want to start a rebuilding project. I know people start these sorts of projects every few weeks, but maybe I'll stick around long enough for something to actually help. We need organization, we need builders, carpenters. There's an apartment building close to the clinic that I've found. It seems empty, and it'll need a lot of work, but I want to make sure that everyone who comes to the city is able to find safe housing.

And people who need help, let someone know. I'm volun-telling Sokka and Jet to help, and I know they can fix a leaky roof. I'm alright with mending clothes and I know a couple of ways to preserve food.

Are there any other volunteers? A lot of us are in pretty bad shape after last week.

[ Katara hesitates then, hesitating as she considers her phrasing for the following: ]

And if anyone's been wondering... Aang's gone to the wastes, if you don't already know. His PCD is still on, but it's all garbled-- I think the area is probably messing with it a little. I'm not worried, so you shouldn't be either. He'll be back as soon as he can be.

[ She says it so firmly because she has to, because considering the alternative is too much to bear right now. ]

Sample Entry Two:

(NOTE: Also from a prior thread, and the same goes for it that went for the sample above – if anything needs to be changed or expanded upon, I'll be happy to do so!)

There was nothing Katara could have possibly done to save Jet in the aftermath of events at Lake Laogai. Rationally, she knew this, and she knew that getting out of there was important. Sticking around for any reason when time was so scarce would have ran the risk of making Jet's sacrifice pointless, would have been a mistake that they couldn't afford to make.

The fact that the decision was rational and necessary didn't always make seeing Jet day in and day out any easier. At home, he had been alive one moment, and then he simply not in the next. Not that Katara had ever had any illusions about mortality, but coming face to face with it never, ever got any easier, nor did it ever get less shocking.

(It could have been one of us, she'd thought frequently in the weeks following, and then desperately attempted to tread water in the flood of guilt that followed immediately afterwards: Jet had died, and associating any, any relief with that knowledge made her feel like a monster.)

But there was no changing the past - only charging ahead with the future here, as dubious and transient as it seemed at times. So Katara rallied, taking a deep breath and holding it for a second, before she shook her head.

"You need to let me heal you," she started. "I've already looked at some of the worst cases here, and there are other healers. It's your turn." And maybe it was a manipulative tactic, but it was one for his own good. Expression set carefully, she continued with: "You do trust me, right?"

Character Name:Jolyne Cujoh
Canon: JoJo’s Bizzare Adventure-part 6:stone ocean
Canon Point: After Her death to Enrico Pucci’s Made in heaven.
Background/History: http://jojo.wikia.com/wiki/Jolyne_Cujoh/History
Personality:

Jolyne is a snappy youth, she is incredibly intelligent and strong willed like her father but due to his neglect often busy with his job as a marine biologist, Jolyne has become a very angry woman. Joining a motorcycle gang when she’s young, and talking back and arguing with her elders. She is known to have a short fuse, a trait shared with her great uncle. Despite her aggressive disposition, she’s quite gullible, her lawyer leading her to believe that he had made a plea bargain, when in reality he was being paid off by Pucci to make her confess, and earning herself 15 years in prison.

For most of her life she despised her father, however, after he had his soul taken by Whitesnake, she picked up several of his characteristics. Especially a ruthlessness in battle, not afraid to fight dirty or kill her opponent, even splitting her boyfriends tongue open just to make sure he wouldn’t rat her out to the police. Most characteristically she has his single minded determination mixed with her own passionate nature and his catchphrase: ‘yare yare’, though with a feminine dawa, instead of daze.

This ruthless demeanor only extends to her enemies though, as shown with her relationships with Hermes Costello and Foo Fighters which were strong and long lasting bonds. Jolyne does indeed care deeply for friends and family, assisting them wherever possible, and jumping into the most dangerous situations for them, such as going to extreme length to retrieve hermes stolen liver from Marilyn Manson (it makes sense in context).

Speaking of family Similarity, she also shares traits with her great grandfather-Joseph Joestar, especially her hot bloodedness, however, this trait can also lead her into dangerous situations, charging into situations headfirst when her friends are in danger, or when she has no better plans.

However she also shares her great grandfathers cunning, with the ability to think up battle plans on the fly; such as turning her body into a mobius strip to avoid being inverted by an enemy stand, or creating a bridge out of string to save Hermes from drowning, this, as well as her ability to predict the trajectory of her string, and enemy attacks, this shows a hidden level of intelligence, not often seen by those who don’t raise her ire.

Jolyne also has a very snarky sense of humour, and enjoys messing with her enemies heads, again, another genetic Joestar trait. One thing she does not share with past JoJo’s is her perversion, out of all the joestars, she can be considered the lustiest of them all, having had 3 different boyfriends, and is hinted at being bi-curious (in her own words, referring to snails… “i’m kinda jealous...an organism that can have sex with anything it encounters… i mean…! ew no! Gross!”)

Abilities/Powers:

Jolyne Like many other people in the jjba canon, is a stand user, a stand is an ethereal spirit inhabiting someones body and soul, and a projection of their consciousness and in turn are controlled by thought rather than spoken command. there are many different types of stand’s, far too many to list here to save time and avoid turning this into an essay on stands, I’ll just say all you need to know about Jolynes stand: Stone Free.

Stone free appears as a an odd humanoid being when summoned, It is summoned immediately upon Jolyne calling its name, appearing wherever she commands it, it however can only operate at about 2 meters from her,it will refuse to leave the area when commanded. like the rest of the Joestar lineage, this stand is very tough strong and fast, when fully bound up striking at about the same impact as a small meteor. However this is not what’s Unique about Stone Free.

Stone Free has the ability to allow Jolyne to unravel up to 70% of her body into a form of string, this string is able to hold Jolyne’s weight (about 58kg) can extend to a max length of 24 meters and is prehensile, controlled by Jolyne. This as one can imagine is extremely versatile, Jolyne can create nets, bridges, traps, and can even use it like a tin can telephone, communicating with people along its length. However, it is worth noting that if a string is cut, it harms Jolynes body. She can also alter her physiology with the string, turning her torso and arms into mobius strips when facing an enemy who can invert surface gravity.

Jolyne is also incredibly cunning, and a proficient martial artist, using these skills to back up her supernatural powers.

Items/Weapons: The stand creating amulet from her father, a baseball from her game of catch with Hermes and Foo fighters, the Green dolphin Prison jacket.

Sample Entry: [Action]

[If one is not a stand user, or lacking in any kind of spiritual sensitivity, the may just trip over the invisible net that Jolyne has deployed in the middle of the street. Whatever the case, as soon as there is a vibration, caused by nearby movement, or someone tripping over the invisible strings Jolyne will pop out from a nearby building, looking suitably miffed.]

Fuck! you ruined my trap, goddammit! watch where you're walkin'!

[she retracts the cord, it returns into a small hole in her palm which fills itself in as it comes into contact with the string.]

Yare Yare... You've probably scared off any a the rats or bunnies i was collectin'!

[She promptly sits on the sidewalk, glaring at the perpetrator.]

[The feed crackles on, with Jolyne sitting in an empty house, scavenged candles providing a poor light source for her tired visage.]

How the hell do you guys get any sleep around here?!, I've been at the edge a' my fuckin' seat!

[Any stand users would notice she'd used Stone free to set up several tripwires around the room. Occasionally a breeze or a rat will trip one, and her head will snap to the direction of the trigger.]

Hell, at least in Green Dolphin you beat a fucker and they know when to back the fuck off! and you can sometimes even trust the guards to cover your ass when you're asleep!

[a particularly large rat triggers her wire, and she throws a lasso from her hand to the area, non stand users seeing the rat suddenly levitate. After discovering its actually a rat, she scowls and lets it go.]

damn thing.... anyway, any tips? i don't feel like passin' out on the floor anytime soon...

Sample Entry Two: Jolyne walked the lonely streets of lonely ruins , the old baseball in her hand. Some would have preferred a gun, or some kind of weapon, but JoJo was glad for the keepsake; Sides, it was something fun to mess around with.

Jolyne brushed her hand over her hip gingerly, the scar from the knife wound that fucker had inflicted on her refusing to heal, and fairly noticeable with her usual choice of clothing. Jolyne liked it there, a constant reminder of that day in florida, and besides Hermes had always said some people dig scars…..

Hermes….

Jolyne stopped walking; shit, she’d promised herself she wouldn’t be sad! What if hermes saw her staring at a baseball like some kind of braindead puppy lookin’ at the fuckin’ moon!, she’d probably beat the shit out of her! Besides, Jolyne had come back from the dead! who said Herme’s couldn’t……

And yet here she was…

She still saw all their faces in her dreams; F.F….Weather Report….Dad….she wasn’t even sure Emporio made it…..

Jolyne’s grip suddenly tightened on the ball, although she was careful not to crush it. What the fuck was she doing?!, standing in the middle of a street, inside some glorified fucking prison, moping over shit she couldn’t change! Fuck hermes beating her up, she’d fucking do it herself if she did this any longer, she should be focusing on what to do today! Her stand wasn’t called stone fucking-stick-around-in-hellholes forever!

The former inmate pitched the baseball as hard as she could through the window of a nearby store, smiling at the crash of the collapsing window.

Canon: Attack on Titan.
Canon Point: A second before she is smashed into a huge tree by Annie.
Background/History:http://shingekinokyojin.wikia.com/wiki/Petra_Ral
Previous Game History: N/A
Personality:
Petra is a strong female in a group of men she is rallied with. She's seen as being a little sister to all of Levi's Squad. She's a kind-hearted upstart that was talented from the beginning and was hand-picked by Levi himself for his extremely elite squad. She lives in a place where having a job, the more likely you are to stay alive. The reason she was picked for his squad was due to her killing record being one of the highest of others in her squad. Petra is considered tiny but mighty in her own degree.

The kind of life she's lived hasn't made her fearful, but strong in her mind that she would succeed. It is very difficult to remain upbeat when the whole world is so negative, so frightening, but she is aware that being afraid isn't going to help her on her expeditions or when things do not go as expected. That's not saying that she isn't afraid of danger. She's not reckless or foolhardy on her missions, she just knows when to pick her battles and when to retreat. The 3D Maneuver gear is her talent, she is more than above average with it, but her skills as a martial artist is lacking. Being a soldier is her life, it's her credo to die if she has to. While she is considered kind, she is fierce when the time comes. This is most noticeable when she is ready to kill Eren the moment he uses his titan powers without being told to do so, despite her previous kindness towards him. She even takes full responsibility for her actions when finding out that she was wrong, she bites down on her hand as hard as Eren does to the point of scarring to accept him into their group. She is not above admitting she's wrong, but she did not feel guilt over her actions due to her orders that she was following.

She is innately a genuine person who is understanding and cares for others. The first scene with her is showing her comforting a dying person while a battle is happening around her. She believes having faith and showing mercy is what makes people different from the titans or animals. Petra's kind to everyone with exception of Oluo, she does not like his attitude and fights with him constantly through the series. She tries to keep that big head of his from exploding with his ridiculous ego by physically injuring him, lecturing him, and mocking him for mimicking Levi or by being too arrogant. It's safe to say that she does not like people with high ego's in general. In fact, completely intolerant to it. While she does not physically injure anyone else but Oluo, I assume the same would be with any other person in Canon resembling his attitude.

She puts a lot of faith, devotion, and loyalty into Levi's decisions, to the point of begging Eren to believe in Levi and the squad. She wished to believe in Levi so much that she died because she begged Eren to listen to her. The loyalty she displays runs deep. Especially with Levi to the point of pure, unfettered devotion as so written in a letter to her father. It is assumed that she might be in love with Levi by her father stating that she is too young to be married to a mortified Levi after her death. Petra's biggest fault is relying too much on faith, taking little risks and keeping to the program. This type of behavior has been her downfall on multiple occasions, especially when she snapped at Eren when he did nothing wrong. Putting faith in humanity, in others and trying to do the right thing, the safe thing ended in her being killed by the female titan.

Abilities/Powers:
Skilled and experienced with 3D Manuever Gear. It is a system using belts, straps and hook shot like cords to move around. The system needs gas and the right amount to keep you aloft during fights/training.

Petra has a large kill record, the highest we've seen: 58 Titans killed, 48 in team and 10 in solo.
Items/Weapons:
3D Maneuver Gear, fully stocked with blades and her jacket/clothing.
Sample Entry:
[She taps the small device with her finger.]

Is this thing on? Oh! It seems so. I can't believe everyone is here, but I don't see Oluo anywhere? If he's imitating the captain again, I swear. Someone told me that there are no Titans around now, is that true?

[Petra is actually unsure if she's using the device correctly, she makes a uneasy face. Raising her finger, she tapped the device a few more times out of annoyance until it accidentally slipped from her fingers.]

Ah! No!

[The device falls under her bed, nothing can be seen from there except darkness.]

Now, where did it go? I wonder if it's under the bed?

[Petra leaned down onto her knees, her orange eyes searching until she saw it.]

There you are!
Sample Entry Two:
Petra was laying there, her entire body in shock as she was sprawled out somewhere in the middle of the grass near a tree. She opened her eyes for real, her whole body was in pain of being almost crushed. Petra knew that she had broken bones that she was suffering from because of the attack. Petra felt a constant nuzzling on her face, it was what woke her from her catatonic state.

When she leaned over, she felt a horse's nose nudging her face over and over. "Oh, Octavius. You came back." She raised her bright orange eyes as she leaned her body over, her hand rested on the lush grass as her eyes shifted around in an attempt to see if she was in any immediate danger. It was at that time that she noticed that her arm was broken and so was her leg, but she couldn't give up now. Her right arm could hold no weight and she moved onto her knees and she knew that she would need some help getting onto her horse as there was no way for her to stand on her own legs. Petra gripped the reigns of the horse, using her good arm and good leg as leverage to hop a little bit until she realized she was more injured than she thought. Petra looked down to her rib cage and noticed that she'd been impaled by a branch through her right lung.

Dang it, I'm not going die here when I have a chance to live. She thought to herself.

It took Petra a full thirty minutes of struggling until she was able to get herself on the horse. Her right hand held onto the reins of the horse and she snapped it, causing the horse to run. Petra had no idea if she could make it back on her own, they were possibly a day away from the inner city and she would have to play catch-up through the night in hopes on not passing out again. Petra was sitting up straight even though it hurt like hell, every part of her body was aching, pain-filled and she wasn't certain that she wouldn't be found by a titan even though it was night time. Petra traveled throughout the darkest parts of the night, avoiding any place that could have been a titan area, watching the tracks that was left by the pulling carts.

I can make it. I can do this, it's not that far and I'm pretty safe. My horse came back for me, it has to be fate. I just need to have faith in myself, I'll see my Squad-mates and apologize to Eren. I didn't want to doubt you, Levi. I wanted to believe in you. I hope you are still alive, all of you. Yes, even Oluo. Petra needed to stay positive if she was going to make it throughout the night out in the open.

Petra arrived three hours after the original group, she had to have the door re-opened. By the time she was by the door, she was heaving ragged breaths that were laced with blood from her right lung. She knew she needed to find Scouts, but she passed out from sheer agony before that to the point where she'd fallen off her horse on the way in.

I will make it. Petra was spent, she fell unconscious moments after.

Petra was taken to the ward, but it was unknown that she even lived until rumors were going around about survivors. For now, she was asleep in the intensive medical ward.

Personality: Gareki's character is a story of successful development.

In the beginning of the series, Gareki was paranoid, cunning, and duplicitous. He had no issues lying to children, adults, fellow criminals and opposing authority figures in order to get what he wanted. Perhaps this behavior can best be explained with his personal mantra: "There are only three types of people around me: people unrelated to me, my prey, and my enemies." Obviously, the guy was sold by his parents into slave labor, survived through a shipwreck that killed all the other kids who bullied him, was saved by a woman named Tsubaki and temporarily given a family - but it all resulted in Tsubaki being betrayed by someone that she trusted and Gareki fueled with a desire for revenge through whatever means necessary. This involved a very Robin Hood approach as he would have no qualms stealing from the rich, working with whoever else had the skills he thought were necessary, and then using the money he received to pay for the hospital bills for Tsubaki's grandfather or pay for a property in Karasuna where he had grown up.

In a way, Gareki is still fond of the place that he found a makeshift family in. He does what he can to take care of the people who were involved with him then, if in a rather rough and vague way. He'll pay for Tsubaki's grandfather's medical bills so that he can continue to stay in the hospital, but he won't let anyone know that he's the one doing it, instead making sure that the payments are done anonymously and that his visits are few and far between without telling any of the nurses his name personally. Tsubaki had two younger siblings named Yotaka and Tsubame and they were close to Gareki when he lived with them, but he cut off ties with them after Tsubaki's death since he knew that his vendetta would involve making enemies and he wanted to make sure that they never got involved. He was thorough to the point that when Yotaka visited him, concerned for his well-being, Gareki merely shoved aside his worries and even mocked his sentimentality. As far as Gareki is concerned, there was no room for family or friends in his world.

However, Gareki could hardly be called a complete scoundrel. Due to the fact that Tsubaki was kind and worked as a prostitute in order to have enough money for food for their small broken family, Gareki has a remarkable amount of compassion for women and children who are put into difficult situations. Even when he went to raid mansions, he would specifically tell his team to not harm any women or children who aren't involved. In one instance, he comes across a woman who is being harassed by a man and steps in, provoking the man to redirect his anger and infuriating him to the point that he didn't notice when Gareki also swiped his wallet off of him. But rather than keep the money for himself, despite all his trouble and the punch that he took, Gareki insisted that the woman take the money and leave town in order to search for a better life. When she finally leaves, he thinks to himself "I wanted to free Tsubaki like this too." Despite the way that life has treated him, he's not looking for a way out for himself. Rather, he simply wanted to have the pleasure of killing Tsubaki's murderer for himself and if he came across anyone along the way who manages to remind him enough of his previous family situation, he wants to grant them freedom too.

A big part of Gareki's personality that persists throughout the series is his sense of responsibility. No, he doesn't feel responsible for the weight of the world or feel any particular need to reform the system - instead, he openly exploited it for his own needs for a time. However he does feel responsible when it comes to helping the people that he sees that remind him of Tsubaki and he feels like he should be able to take care of himself more than anything else. Even as a child, he would chastise Tsubaki for her willingness to trust the first person who offered her help just so that she could provide for her family. Gareki would shake his head, saying that he didn't need anything more than he already had - he just wanted her to make smart decisions. The main thing that actually spurred his character development was the fact that he didn't feel like he was puling his own weight when traveling along with Circus. There is nothing that Gareki hates more than feeling useless. Certainly, in the world of normal people, he's entirely capable of taking care of himself and survived on his own for years even though he's only 15 by the start of canon. However once he was put into the world of the superhuman and monstrous creatures, he was forced to realize just how little prepared he was for it after all.

After all, Gareki was a lone wolf for a really long time. Even now he has incredibly independent tendencies. He doesn't like relying on other people and for the most part, he doesn't. He won't trust adults or any random people with good intentions to take care of things on his behalf. There's a part of Gareki that has developed a strong sense of distrust after seeing what happened to Tsubaki, so it takes a long time for him to even think about trusting others. However this is different when it comes to people that he's traveled and worked with for a really long time (which is new in itself, since he never worked with the same people much in Karasuna) and he will admit that he would get in their way if he were to become involved in the battle. Rather, he'd admit that as long as it is that specific set of people who he has come to trust, he won't be worried about the situation. That said, this relationship only built after these people saved Gareki's life on multiple occasions, supported him to make his own choices about the future, and constantly pestered him like friends do - and even then it's up for debate whether or not Gareki would actually call them friends.

For most strangers, Gareki's personality depends on exactly what kind of relationship he's expected to have with them. He's not openly coarse by any means, conforming to societal standards like apologizing to people when he bumps into them, but he's definitely not friendly either unless he's expected to be. Even when he's going to be living with someone in the dormitories at Kuronomei, he doesn't build much of a relationship with his roommate at all. As far as Gareki's concerned, they're seriously just sharing a living space. That doesn't automatically entail any sort of personal, friendly interaction as far as he's concerned. After living in a mostly solitary fashion for years, Gareki is just practiced in the art of not giving a shit being disinterested in people until there's a reason for why he should be interested. Even though he's not nearly as opportunistic and manipulative as he used to be, that doesn't mean that he's entirely sold on the idea of meeting people for the sake of being friendly either.

If anything, Gareki is almost more prone to being hostile to others depending on the context. In Karneval, the world is populated by mascots. These mascots are in the same ridiculous costumes that you'd see at amusement parks, but the difference is that these guys just roam around everywhere in the towns that Gareki visits with Circus. And Gareki doesn't like them at all. Maybe it's because of the overly abundant amounts of energy, the squeaky voices, or the simple fact that they're way too cutesy, but Gareki thinks they're dumb. People and creatures that appear to be way too friendly at first sight tend to get the cold shoulder from Gareki. However if he's absolutely forced to interact them, he's also more prone to picking a fight than anything else.

Perhaps it's times like that that really manage to emphasize that Gareki is socially awkward. He acts like he's cool and he can have his moments of badassery (particularly when explosions are involved), but the sad matter of fact is that he's a 15-year-old from a bad neighborhood and a total lack of actual people skills. He's a good actor and if he puts on a nice shirt and fixes his hair, he can convince police officers that he's an upstanding young student with a healthy amount of curiosity about their operations. That much is for sure. However when it comes to basic interaction with other people on a day to day basis (on the off-chance that he actually finds himself in a lasting conversation), Gareki doesn't always know how to react. If he's in a particularly conflicting state of emotions, it's entirely possible for him to snap and yell just because he's awkward. If he receives gifts and open acts of kindness from other people whose opinion he actually respects and cares about, he doesn't always know how to deal with it. He'll take the offered items, if in a rather stilted manner.

However even if you've come to receive Gareki's interest and some of his incredibly hesitant affection (in the form of showing concern from a distant), that doesn't mean that you're an exception to the abuse that he is entirely capable of dishing out to people. If anything, he'll almost become more abusive to those with bright, sparkly personalities if only because those people are also prone to embarrassing him the most with their open attention and concern. He reacts badly partially because he doesn't know how to deal with it, but also quite possibly because he thinks that those people are idiots. Sadly that's just part of Gareki's rather unsociable personality - he doesn't really have much patience for dealing with idiocy.

But if you do want Gareki to deal with idiocy, the easiest way to make that happen is to make it a competition. Under his life policy of being a little shit taking care of himself, Gareki hates it when people assume that he isn't capable of something. So if someone even implies that he's not up to a task, he'll become all the more determined to prove that he definitely, definitely is. Whether it's playing hide-and-seek, cleaning up a place, or being a good student, the easiest way to get Gareki to cooperate is just to goad him into it and he will almost definitely follow through with it with everything that he has to offer. In that way, he's rather easy to manipulate, even though he'd absolutely hate anyone pointing that out.

However besides that one failing, Gareki manages to be incredibly intelligent and practical. Even though his knowledge of technology and expertise in bombs may make people think that he's doing it for a sensible career path, he explains that it's simply for the sake of survival. He needed bombs in order to perform his thievery and his knowledge of technology only made it that much easier. He's dedicated to learning about the mechanics of the world around him - and I do mean quite literally, the mechanics of it. Every night he would fall asleep after reading and his reading was never a work of fiction but rather some sort of technical book. So even though he never received a proper education through conventional means, he has expert-level knowledge in the fields that he's applied his time to. In that sense, Gareki is entirely self-taught and continues to add to his independent, survival-oriented nature.

Yet the way that Gareki has developed the most over the course of canon is his ability to care about other people. Before, he had a very select group of people that he would actually consider important enough to him that he would think about them. However upon working with Circus, he's accepted the developing relationship and has gone from regarding them as people who are separate from him to people who have protected him. Even though he was manipulative to begin with, he's grown to almost be apologetic about having everyone protect him. He's hard-headed and persistent, to the point that before, even though he knew he would get in the way, he wanted to be taken to the focal point of a battlefield. He apologized, knowing just what he was asking, but he wanted to go anyway because his need to see things through with his own eyes overtook his concern for the people who were watching over him. However after that battle, he decided that he needed to grow up and learn how to take care of himself so that he could continue to be with the people that have taken care of him.

Before, Gareki lived to steal from people, earn money to take care of his former family, and get revenge on Tsubaki's killer. Now he's worked alongside an organization on the side of the government, been replaced as the money donor and is no longer needed to pay for anyone's needs in Karasuna, and watched Tsubaki's killer die at the hands of someone else. Without a doubt, the very foundation of his character has been shaken and he's been left looking for something else to do with his life. The answer that he found was that he wants to become "a proud human being", someone that doesn't need to cower behind others and instead stand alongside them. This can best be explained that now that his past has been settled, he's now clinging onto Circus as his new home - admittedly with a bit of hesitance. But there's no doubt in his mind that he wants to be with the Second Ship of Circus.

Yet Gareki has also proven to have changed in terms of how he views people. Not only does he implicitly trust them more (at least, for the people who have earned his trust) but he also places them ahead of himself. When Nai called him, distressed and lost, Gareki was willing to drop out of the school that he was enrolled in just to save him. As far as he was concerned, his friend was in danger. Most interestingly, that instance was the first time that Gareki referred to Nai as a friend as opposed to someone who he had "a bond with".

There's no doubt that Gareki is still learning but that's practically his entire role in Karneval - he is learning, but he is determined to succeed. The boy sold into slavery by his own parents is becoming his own man, even with a few bumps along the way. That said, his utter fascination with technology and awful stand-offish personality probably aren't going anywhere. But the world will just have to deal with that because it's a package deal.

Abilities/Powers:

The thing about Gareki is that he’s a normal human surrounded by people with superpowers, unnatural or not. That said, he has trained himself to fight after having a rough childhood in a terrible neighborhood. He’s fairly strong physically, but more importantly, he knows how to use a gun with fair accuracy. He shoots without hesitation against people and monsters that stand again him, though he is capable of losing his nerve even in fights. Regardless, he’s used a gun for several years and is able to manage at least a bare level of self-defense. Furthermore, he took classes to become a member of Circus, which is the crime-fighting organization created on behalf of the government, and therefore he has above average skill when it comes to fighting, defense, and general physical ability. He also seems to be a quick learner and so he’s quick to pick up on physical aspects of growth.

That said, Gareki’s abilities are almost more mental in nature than physical. Compared to people with awesome powers, he’s more than a little bit underwhelming with his cute little gun. Rather, he’s better put to use and capable when it comes to technology. He’s an expert hacker who can get into systems that he’s never seen before – but he’s got a strong grasp of the fundamentals due to how much reading he does. He reads books about technical skills that could be useful to him in the future as a precaution and then stores the information so that he can create bombs out of household items, reconfigure entire circuit boards, and essentially use his knowledge of technology and explosions to assist other people in their grand missions.

When it comes to his actual skills on the side, he’s pretty capable as a general miscreant though. He’s shown that he has absolutely no hesitation about breaking into places by picking locks with nothing more than a bobby pin or putting on a disguise and a charming personality just to infiltrate a police base. There are habits that he picked up as a criminal and doesn’t really hesitate to make use of, particularly when it comes to furthering his own goals. He’s also a very capable pickpocket as a master of misdirection and he knows how to take a punch for the sake of stealing someone’s wallet.

Yeah, his priorities are definitely in order.

Items/Weapons:

• The clothes on his back (specifically, the Kuronomei uniform) + the bicycle rack blanket that he was wearing at the time.
• His cell phone, though it’ll be cleared of all writing characters.

Sample Entry: one. Voicetest Threads!

two.

[The feed starts off with a boy looking off-screen, screwdriver held in between his lips. He squints as if looking at something before glancing back at the screen. He removes the screwdriver and immediately begins-]

The billboard.

[No greeting. Clearly this boy is quite the social butterfly.]

There was a broadcast from it, right? There's some sort of electrical hook-up to it - except I can't tell if it's wireless or not. Right now it's back to a static image but there's a chance that it could be like a TV, so it's just one channel that the bastards who caught us put up.

[He pauses, thinking for a moment after his musing. Then he asks-]

If we could reverse-engineer it, maybe we could find out where the broadcast was coming from exactly and it'll take us right to those fat pigs who took us. The problem is that I can't take apart something of this size by myself. Respond to this message if you're going to be of any help, I don't have any interest in answering questions.

[His even, uninterested gaze says what doesn't quite make it out of his mouth:

'Keep up or shut up.'

Then without even giving his name, he ends the feed. You know his face, he figures that's enough to find him on the communicator. As far as he can tell, there's no need to get personal with these people. They're fellow captives - but that doesn't make them allies.

He knows better than to assume when it comes to strangers.]

Sample Entry Two: It couldn’t be helped that Gareki was entirely unsure of how teleportation worked, but he didn’t expect to be drawn to yet another place after closing his eyes for just a moment.

Perhaps the more concerning thing was that this time when he came to, he was actually in a bed as opposed to a random location, thus implying that this act was a little bit more planned than the accident that involved Nai. Information wasn’t that hard to find as he questioned the people around him as necessary. It had been some time since he had to acquire information and use other people for his own means like this, but at least this was a business that he was used to.

Still, wandering around the town and looking at the rubble scattered around, he couldn’t help but be reminded of Karasuna. Bitterly, he wasn't quite able to stop himself from resenting the fact that he’d be taken to a hellhole like this. There were probably criminals and shady characters running around everywhere – though he was also amused. Not too long ago, that shady character could’ve very well been him. The one difference was that he also noticed women and children wandering around these streets - what kind of bastard ran this place? He'd gathered that for some reason or another, they'd all been taken. The 'other worlds' part he was less willing to buy, but either way, innocent people were being taken for experiments. That sat badly with him. Quite badly.

For that reason, his defense was up as he explored further. He didn’t recognize the area and his cell phone didn’t work - so maybe the fact that everyone was convinced that they were in a different world wasn't so far off... but he still had to reserve judgment on that. They all might've been drugged or something to mess with their mental faculties. ‘Haven,’ they’d told him, but this place was practically the the embodiment of the opposite. A haven was supposed to be a safe place as far as he knew, but this… this area reeked of danger and death.

He knew that the chances of Nai being here were even smaller, which made him all the more determined to get back to a place where he could find him. That was the single goal that Gareki had in mind and he did not plan to hesitate on its execution.

Lowering his goggles onto his face, he kicked at some of the debris. A pile of rubble, like the one that he'd been laying on when Tsubaki found him-

Ha.

At the very least, he was even more comfortable here than he was Satanika.

A hellhole with zero hope of rescue, left with a singular goal to focus all his attention on, with some vague hope of finding something better?

Yeah. Sounded familiar.

That said, he wasn't about to stick around for nearly as long as he did in Karasuna - he had people waiting on him now.

Mai | Avatar: the Last Airbender | Not Reserved [2/?]

[personal profile] maipokerface 2014-04-14 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:
Much of what makes Mai... well, Mai isn't visible on the surface. For Mai, the image she projects externally is a mix of who she honestly is, the image she is trying to reflect and results of her upbringing.

The greatest law and rule of Mai's young life could be boiled down to "Don't get in trouble." The daughter of a rich and noble family, Mai was also the daughter of a noble with political aspirations. He worked desperately to climb that vague political social ladder, through words and gestures, through actions and promises. And his wife worked just as hard to support her husband in those endeavors, chiefly through the facade of their family.

"Don't speak unless you're spoken to. Sit still. Don't act out." Through this, decorum and politeness was what Mai was deluged in. Her mother's expectations of her behavior were the law and when the law was broken, Mai was shut down. In her mother's eyes, the best thing Mai could do was simply keep to her rooms and do nothing at all. Doing nothing kept her from getting into any sort of trouble, kept any sort of blemish from touching her husband's important political career.

It's little wonder then that Mai's outer image then is one of stony silences, flat sarcastic remarks and few smiles. Shut down every time she expressed an emotion by a mother worried more for image than happiness, she soon learned that it was simply easier to expression no emotion. If you present the world an apathetic face, the world will typically leave you be without question. And that was precisely what Mai wished for and still wishes for at times.

The world is full of schemes in Mai's eyes. Raised in the bosom of political scheming and climbing, she's watched more than one person say one thing and do another all for the political gain and reward. Friends can become enemies and enemies friends as quickly as the tide can change. You're only as useful as far as someone else can use you is what she sees reflected in others.

And yet one couldn't say Mai hates the entire world. In truth, this view of others has only strengthened Mai's conviction to belong to and be beholden to no one but herself. Her parents value their image so deeply because they are beholden to the opinions of others. And Mai views this with disdain, seeing how it's crippled her family and how it's crippled her in some ways. So she has made her mind firmly up to avoid taking anyone's opinions too deeply into who she is.

For Mai, truth and forthrightness are more important than anything. When she is angry at Zuko in particular in the series, she's often angry over the secrets he conceals, the things he doesn't share with her, the times he continually leaves her in the dark or doesn't show trust in her. For a girl who wasn't even trusted to keep herself out of trouble, not being trusted by the one person she can honestly say she desires a good opinion from hurts deeply.

Relationships are particularly difficult for Mai. Internally, she has as many hopes and desires as anyone else. Many of them though are firmly grounded in logic, looked at with the stern eye of reality and then dismissed as frivolous or simply stupid. Often she can't mention these hopes or desires, leaving her to look apathetic and uninterested to those she wishes to form deeper relationships with. Not given the tools as a child in learning how to communicate love, Mai instead finds herself fumblingly trying to convey it through actions instead of words.

It's easy to see in the series how different she treats people from one another, for example. Azula is treated at arms lengths, neither warm nor cold. Ty Lee is treated with a touch more warmth but even with her Mai seems reserved and closed off. It's only in Zuko that Mai manages to find someone she doesn't want to keep at arms length and when she does, she sets about conveying it in her actions rather than words. Words are cheap, as shown by her parents, and actions - truth, forthrightness, not concealing the things one does - matter more to her than anything when it comes to someone she cares for.

In the end, though Mai's tongue is sharp and her apathetic exterior is cold, the emotions not allowed to leak outward have all become tangled inwardly. She's no robot without feelings, hopes or dreams, simply a girl who's control over her own self is much tighter than anyone else's control over her will ever be.

Abilities/Powers:
Mai is known chiefly for her ability as a marksman, forged in practice to relieve the boredom of her quiet and monotonous life as the 'good daughter' of a politician. She keeps an arsenal of blades on her at all times, as well small arrows mounted in spring loaded holsters on her wrists and ankles. Her blades also run a range from long-bladed ones, single-bladed, double-bladed thrown in the fashion of discs and such. These are all shown to be sharp and strong enough to pierce wood, stone and even metal.

Unfortunately because of how good she is at a distance, Mai isn't really that great close up. She can engage in hand-to-hand with her three-pronged miniature sai but this is something of a last resort and she definitely prefers keeping a distance unless it's to strike a final blow/pin someone to something.

She's completely human in the end though. While she shows a great amount of dexterity, speed and balance as well in the way she can run and leap from object to object, it's no extra ordinary skill or mutation of any kind.

Items/Weapons:
* Spring-loaded wrist holsters bearing little stiletto knives/arrows.
* Belt worn under her clothing bearing an assortment of knives (long blades, smaller blades and double ended blades as well).
* The painting done of her and Zuko that she carted with her when she left.

Even now, weeks later, she still couldn't fully accept it. When civilians had been allowed to re-enter the city following the thwarted invasion, her first plan had been to go to the Palace itself to check on Zuko. She hadn't argued very hard to stay behind when the evacuation began, knowing her parents would hear none of the idea. The next best thing then was to immediately go to the Palace after returning to see him. She wouldn't be able to rest well until she know he was alright after all, not that she had any doubt he would be. He had far too many guards and far too much fighting ability himself.

She had simply went to change before she made her way over when she came across that scroll. That scroll. She had instantly known laying eyes on it that it couldn't be any good. Who would simply leave her a random note when the city was evacuated? If anyone had wanted to start leaving her love letters or confessionals, they had picked a pretty poor time to do it. Besides, who would have been left behind to leave any kind of letter besides him?
That letter had proved it's lack of happy news particularly well. She didn't even really need it now to remember what it said.

"Dear Mai, I'm sorry that you have to find out this way, but I'm leaving."

A breath left her in a faint, amused sigh as she stood out on the balcony of her room, that errant scroll still in her hand. She kept it there as she tucked her arm along the railing, leaned her other elbow near it and plopped her chin unceremoniously into her hand. It was just like him, she thought, to make even a breakup as short and awkwardly conscious as possible. For someone who called her a big blah at one point, he wasn't precisely the king of emotional understanding either.

Mai frowned harshly there. Okay, now all she was doing was bitterly brooding. This would have been so much easier to take if she could simply have detached herself from him the moment she read those words. If she could put away the weeks they had together as a nice memory of a first love and just move on. That was the logical thing to do, wasn't it? Cut her losses and cut the pesky, annoying emotional attachment that had just strengthened with their short time together.

She unfolded her arm and held the scroll at eye level, considering it. She could just tear it up and be done with it. Maybe burn it and burn out what was binding her to him at the same time. She could rip it into pieces with her knives and with that barricade the door on those emotions she had for him. She had plenty of practice in shutting off emotions, after all. What was shutting off a few more?

The solid thump of a knock roused Mai from her harsh thoughts and she straightened up, turning around to face the door all while tucking the letter into the sash of her belt along her back. "Come in."
It was one of the house servants, an older motherly sort of woman who served as one of the cooks. Mai gave her a faint smile as she entered, bearing a covered dish in her hands and a bolder smile on her wrinkled face. Mai could have her fun at times bossing around the servants but she tended to leave the older ones and the nicer ones alone.
"I've just come up to bring you the tart you requested personally, Miss. Do you need anymore tea?"
Mai shook her head at the question, "I'm fine."

The teen didn't enter the room properly until she was sure the maid was long gone, then she crossed the room to the low table just in front of her couch where the maid had left that covered dish. Lifting the top off, she gazed down at what she knew she would find under it - a tart loaded in fruit, covered in rose petals.
She sat the cover to one side, straightening up only to realize that at some point, the straight expression her faint smile had faded into had shifted into what she knew was likely sadness. It did fit the feeling inside of her heart anyhow.

Mai reached behind her, producing the letter again for another long, contemplative look. And then she laid it down beside the tart. Did she feel like crying? Maybe? She wasn't sure she remembered how to even if she did want to. A knot had formed somewhere in her throat and swallowing around it was tedious, enough so to make her just a little angry with herself for it even being there in the first place.

"You're an idiot." Her voice was rough and tired. It only grew more tired as she added, "And so am I."

But hey, at least she had a tart, right?

Character Name: Carlos (the scientist)
Canon: Welcome to Night Vale
Canon Point: The end of Condos

Background/History:
Official Night Vale website and Wikipedia entry. It is also worth noting that Carlos's history before arriving in Night Vale has not been revealed. This means we do not know about his family life or childhood, but I will make sure to try and remain vague on these points until they are clarified by canon.

Personality:

The first time that Carlos is introduced in Night Vale, it's as a nameless scientist who has come to investigate the town. And even though he gets a name soon after, his identity as "the scientist" only ever grows. He is clearly passionate about what he does, and this is shown in the numerous times that he jumps in feet first to investigate any new phenomena that have invaded Night Vale. It's his scientific curiosity that first draws him to Night Vale in the first place, and he can frequently be heard saying that it's the most scientifically interesting town in America.

His clear expertise in his field (which is only ever referred to as "science"), makes it easy to deduce that he is an intelligent man. He further displays this when he's actually heard during the episodes of "First Date" and "Condos", which show his vocabulary to be extensive and his scientific curiosity insatiable. Another indication of his competence in the sciences, are his position of the leader of the team of scientists, and his tendency to be the first to know about risks in Night Vale, which he then tries to warn others about via the community radio medium.

However, his interest in science is not all virtues, and comes with a share of glaring flaws as well. He is obsessed with it to the point that a lot of other things can fall by the wayside without him noticing, this includes his personal relationships and his own safety. While there is certainly an element of bravery in his willingness to put himself on the line for his research, such as when he climbed down to the miniature city or when he investigated the house that doesn't exist, it also seems to be that he is blind to the risk as long as scientific discoveries are on the line.

The town of Night Vale itself has contributed to Carlos's character arc, and how his personality has changed. To explain for the non canon familiar, the town of Night Vale is full of things that we in our normal world would consider horror material or downright bizarre. These include things such as secret dog parks, and glow clouds that drop the carcasses of animals. Deaths are frequent and almost expected, and seem to be an accepted fact of life for most Night Vale residents.

When Carlos first arrived in Night Vale, he was one of the only ones that seems still worked up about the terrors that occur regularly. He went out of his way to warn people when new dangers came around, and he was constantly calling the radio station to have more information reach the masses. And even though he does eventually settle in, he never loses some of the initial amazement for the goings-on, that long-term or permanent residents don't seem to feel.

Now that he has been in Night Vale for over a year, his outlook has altered to become more accepting of strange occurrences. The first real example of this is during "First Date", when he doesn't bat an eyelid about people turning into strange things or having to jump out of the window of the restaurant. It's further shown when he later dismisses an approaching army as a mirage which he has seen before, without displaying any fear or trepidation.

The final way that can be examined to show Carlos's personality, is his relationship with others and how they develop over the series. The most important of these relationships is with Cecil Palmer, the voice of the community radio station and the host of the podcast. While Cecil's commentary on Carlos has a clear bias, the times when Carlos is actually heard speaking for himself give an insight into his return feelings.

He is clearly not a very experienced man in the ways of love and relationships, and can come across as quite shy or awkward. He spends many months tuning into the radio to hear Cecil talk because he likes him, and he couldn't fail to hear that Cecil felt the same way while listening, but it takes until a near death experience for him to come right out and ask for a date. It also takes the catalyst of him nearly being turned into a mindless floating body inside a condo, for him to come out and say that he would like to move in with Cecil. His inexperience and awkwardness show in the times we hear him talk on the air. He constantly fumbles expressing his feelings by wrapping them in scientific analogies, and goes off on long tangents about unrelated theories and ideas. He is also having to learn how to prioritize being in a relationship, and can still often mess up by unintentionally snubbing Cecil in favor of science.

Although it is not shown as often as his relationship with Cecil, which is cast into sharp relief due to Cecil being the main voice of the show, Carlos's interactions with other Night Vale residents and his team of scientists can show a little more about him. His team of scientists generally seem to respect him, indicating that he has fair leadership and communication skills, and follow his lead when investigating phenomena. The other Night Vale residents seem to like him, most clearly indicated when they seem concerned about his apparent death under the bowling alley, when the Apache Tracker even leaps in to save him. He is always heard to be polite and pleasant when talking to others and, even if his obsession in science can make him a tough conversationalist sometimes, he is clearly friendly and compassionate towards others.

Items/Weapons:
+ Digital dictaphone for recording scientific discoveries.

Sample Entry Two:
The radio that was kindly provided by the benevolent and terrifying overlords of Haven should have belonged to the whole communal house, but Carlos had decided that they might not mind if he borrowed it for one night. He would have left a note informing them of this, but as the words would have faded perhaps before they had been seen, it had seemed like an exercise in futility to do so.

Haven was an interesting place, perhaps even as interesting as Night Vale, but he still missed the small town. He wondered idly if it was the issue of free will that determined his fondness levels - he had chosen to travel to Night Vale and remain there, he had not chosen to travel and remain here - but free will was undoubtedly an illusion and so that was unlikely to be it. His stomach rumbled and cut into his train of thought, effectively pulling it into the station of realization to the real reason he disliked Haven so much. He was hungry. He would do unspeakable things for a slice of pizza from Big Rico's, or to see the lights of Arby's come into view on the horizon.

He sighed and took a seat on the ground, and fiddled with the dials and knobs on the radio. Perhaps he wasn't in Night Vale any longer, but at least if he listened to the radio for long enough then the voice he longed to hear would transport him back there for a little while.
