Applications Two

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
The next application opening date is Friday 16th January, 7pm EST.
The next application processing date is Friday 23rd January, 7pm EST.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

To see what we are looking for:

Sorry about that!

Sample Entry Two:
Change is unstoppable, but that didn't mean Saya had to like it. A few weeks ago she was hanging out with her brothers, eating her dad's food and going out with her friends. She had been a normal high school girl that only needed to worry about her grades her appearance. But now it was all very different and Saya is aware that she could never return to that sort of life. She passed the point of return when she decided to take up her sword, and promised to bring down the chiropteran race.

That did not mean she didn't miss her old life.

Picking up her bloodied sword, Saya stared at it for a few minutes and grabbed the cloth that sat next to her. It would be best to clean it to get rid of the smell which lingered around it. She fed and lived on blood so it did smell sweet to her, but it was not saying that Saya wished to think about too much.

Flashbacks of the faces of people who were half human and half chiropteran rushed back to her, and Saya dropped the cloth to cover her mouth with her hands. The images made her sick because she's aware that they were once human and it was impossible to think of them as just monsters because of that. If they were just chiropteran, it wouldn't be too bad. If she had not seen those human faces, their expressions, she could shrug it off.

But she had.

"Saya, are you all right?"

Raising her head, her eyes met Hagi's and she quickly nodded her head. Now is not the time to be thinking about what happened and feeling sick. "I'm fine," she said once she lowered her hand and picked up the cloth. "It's nothing." Saya hoped he would let her off the hook, and because she got no response from him, she assumed he was going to leave the topic alone. Good. When she heard footsteps disappear, meaning she was alone again, Saya rested against the wall and started to clean her sword.

She needed to focus on her goals now; on killing the chiropteran and defeating Diva.

Hi mods, I hope this is better!

---

Yuna would never forget her first summoning.

She remembered in Besaid, when she spent an entire day communing with the fayth. It was hard work and she stumbled out weak at the knees after the ordeal, but she was… happy. Smiling. She did it.

It was only a small ounce of confidence. There were many more temples to visit and many more aeons to pray to. But she felt that she could do it. One step at a time. Wakka, Kimahri and Lulu were all there to help. She wouldn't be alone. It wouldn't be all fun - she wasn't expecting it to be. It was a serious trip after all. But it would be happy, in some respects.

After she regained her breath, she walked out of the temple and summoned Valefor in the middle of Besaid for all to see after one of the little girls asked her what she was doing so long in the temple without coming out. There were ooohs and ahhs as she summoned it. The great bird like creature emerged from the glyphs and stretched its wings and Yuna touched the chain that hung from it’s claw, indicating her great trust in the aeon.

That was what she was doing. She was putting her faith in the dead, so that they may lead her to somewhere were she could bring happiness to all.

“Lady Yuna? You okay? You spaced out.”

Someone’s voice broke through her reverie. She looked down and it was a boy, who looked up at her with shining eyes expectantly. Yuna quickly shook her head, smiled and got to his eye level.

“I apologise. Nobody’s asked me to summon an aeon outside of battle in a long time.”

She stood up, pulled out her rod and prayed.

Whoops! Sorry about that!

SAMPLE ENTRY (revised):

This isn't a mission to be underestimated.

There are four of them to a room. There are three bedrooms in a house, which makes a total of eleven new people for him to more or less keep tabs on. Then there's a common lounge, and a combined bath(?) and latrine room. Gerome is sure the latter is where he could find privacy. They actually have doors, which is a great improvement from the tent flaps back in his world. So that's the only place where he can safely take off his mask.

But there's the issue of sleep. He isn't comfortable enough with anyone to let them see him with the mask off. Not even his own comrade-in-arms have seen him without it. Besides, what if he whimpers in his sleep, blushes or have one of those nightmares that make him cry again. He doesn't want to give anyone the possibility of seeing that. On the other hand, what if he sleeps with his mask on, toss and turn for that night and wake up with a broken mask? That's just not proper mask care! And he's wearing a quality mask!

He decides that the best way to settle this dilemma was to sleep last. He isn't fond of being in the same house with four, much more eleven, people so he makes it a point to stay out most of the time. It's just too forcefully social. So his plan is to sneak in when everyone is most likely asleep. He's an insomniac who works up early so he can have his mask on before anyone anything. He brings his pollaxe everywhere, which isn't a very stealthy weapon. So he can't have it strapped to his back as usual when he sneaks in.

So here's Gerome, in the dead of the night, masked as usual, tiptoeing across the room and carrying his pollaxe like he's about to strike.

Re: Wan | Avatar:The Legend of Korra | Reserved

[personal profile] raavashing 2014-05-09 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:
First and foremost, Wan is an incredibly kind soul. He puts others before himself in all things and if he has the power to help them, he will seek to do so no matter how much it might end up harming him personally. This is something that is so intrinsic to his nature that he displays it throughout his canon appearance. Early on, he forgoes feeding himself to feed his friends with what little food he managed to steal from the Chou brothers, and again shows compassion for a captured catdeer that could have been put to good use as a much-needed meal after his banishment from the Lion Turtle City. Later, he puts the needs of humanity to live without fear of the Spirits above his own desire to see peace between the groups by sealing the portals so humans could learn to live with each other in the hopes they would eventually be able to live with the spirits.

He also has a strong sense of justice and fairness. He sees a disparity, an inequality that is detrimental to many, and he seeks to change it and bring balance. While it was never with the thought of bringing balance early in his life, it was a clear foreshadowing of his own destiny and purpose later in life. He never wanted to hurt anyone when he led the raid on the Chou's food storage, just get food to those who didn't have much of it. When put himself between his old friends Jaya and the Aye-Aye-spirit during the year before Harmonic Convergence, it was with both a desire not to see them hurt each other, but to also have the chance to show them they could get along. That they could live and work with each other and have power in equal measure.

Having the power to change things and using it responsibly was always something he saw as the 'right' way to go about life. When he had power, he didn't use it beyond what he needed it for. Even knowing that leaving the Chou brother alive and dropping his fire shield would get him captured (and banished), he did not abuse the element. He accepted the consequences of his actions and lived with the result because that was part of using power responsibly. This clear desire is reinforced when he once again meets with Jaya and is told by his old friend that Wan was the one to show them they had the power to change things, and Wan's reply as the humans go off to fight the spirits is "this isn't what I had in mind."

Wan does not see power as an ultimate goal, he sees it as a means to an end and that those with it have a responsibility to use it for the greater good. While he did use the element of fire in (mostly) harmless attempts to intimidate others early in his life, he has long since learned that such tactics rarely work as intended. He does not flaunt his power and is very humble when it comes to acknowledging his self-appointed role within the world.

Wan's sense of responsibility extends into his promises. If he makes one, he will keep it no matter the cost. Even if the promise is only to himself. Once he has decided to do something, he will do it to the fullest of his ability. This is most easily seen in his promise to Raava to master the four elements and help her defeat Vaatu to fix his mistake of freeing the Dark Spirit from his connection to the Light Spirit.

While Raava did not believe he could achieve his promise, Wan was always optimistic about his chances. It took such optimism to convince the Lion Turtles to aid him. One of his major philosophies on life is "Just because it hasn't been done before, doesn't mean it can't." He repeats this line throughout the series and when others tell him something hasn't been done before, he faces up to the challenge with a ready and determined heart. He truly believes that anything is possible.

When he realizes his actions have caused pain or problems for others, Wan is deeply and truly regretful for what he has done. He sometimes needs the enormity of the consequences spelled out for him, but once he understands an immediate attitude change comes over him. He steps up and offers to make things right. If told no, he accepts the no and moves on with a heavy heart, but takes the opportunity to ask the right to help and make up for his mistakes if it presents itself again. This is what happened with Raava. She told him to stay away from her and he did not question it or peruse her. He accepted her decision and moved on. But when he saw her again, after defending the humans on the Air Lion Turtle, when he realized she was growing weaker, he asked once more for the right to help her. That time, she accepted.

While it would not be much of a physical hindrance, if Wan were to ever lose his bending, the loss would take an emotional toll on him. Wan worked very hard to master the four elements, becoming more than human in an effort to correct his mistake of freeing Vaatu and would see the loss as a failure. He would believe he failed to keep his promise to use Raava's light spirit to guide the world toward peace and balance because part of using her light spirit was mastering the elements.

Wan is normally an optimist with a never-give-up attitude, but this is shown to give way under stress. His guilt over the terrible things his rash actions and lack of thought in his earlier years eats away at him and he ends up falling into melancholy. It is only when he has others to cheer up or be excited for that he returns to his normal easy smile. He desires to do good in the world and bring happiness to others if he can. This is not something that can be done over night and while he recognizes that, it weighs heavily on him that it takes as long as it does.

He is not as rash as he once was, but Wan still throws himself headfirst into situations and doesn't always stop to think or observe first. He makes assumptions about situations based on his own perspective and experiences that do not reflect the experiences of man. He's lived too long with the Spirits to be able to understand humanity as he once did. He's changed and while he as empathy for people, he has trouble understanding why they can't just learn to live together peacefully. He made the promise to use Raava's light spirit to guide the world toward peace thinking it would only take his own lifetime, and while his death is long after his canon point, when it does come, he believes he failed to keep his promise because the world was not united.

Related to that, is that while he has a sense of urgency about a task, he doesn't always understand how long it may take to overcome, resolve, or complete. He usually underestimates how long it takes and berates himself for not getting done sooner. It takes a gentle (or not so gentle) reminder from others for him to realize that it's okay if it takes longer than he assumed.

Overall, Wan has a very resolute and responsible outlook on life. He is a kind person with an easy smile and a good sense of humor that has the weight of his own mistakes to keep him grounded. He seeks peace and balance for the sake of other, but is not unwilling to fight if he has to. He understands the need for action for the betterment and protection of others. In most fights he will fight not to harm, but to warn off and redirect aggression. If push comes to shove and the battle is clearly a losing one, he will put himself in front of the enemy to allow others time to escape.

Re: Wan | Avatar:The Legend of Korra | Reserved

[personal profile] raavashing 2014-05-09 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Abilities/Powers:

Wan comes from a world where a large portion of the human population is able to control one of the four elements in a manner that, long after his lifetime, comes to be known as 'bending'. Wan is the only human of his time who is able to bend all four elements. Bending is channeled through very distinctive martial arts forms that have been passed down over the ages. In Wan's time, Wan learned Firebending from a dragon, and the other bending forms from Raava, but they are the same forms that are used in the time of Avatar Aang and Korra.

All 'Avatar Level' bending is usually done in the Avatar state.

Firebending - The first Element that Wan learned to control was Fire. He has near complete mastery over it. Wan can create fire and channel it as an 'extension of his body' through a martial art style that shows a strong similarity to the Northern Shaolin Style of Kung Fu and, particularly in Wan's case, Taekwondo. This form focuses heavily on breath control and strong, very decisive movements that are rather aggressive in their implementation.

Firebending has a couple 'special' abilities that particularly strong firebenders are able to learn. Creation and redirection of lighting, and 'chi reading' are shown in the series, but Wan was never shown to use them. Due to Fire being the first element he learns, it's possible he could be trained in these forms by someone who knows how, but at current it is is best to assume he does not have that knowledge.

Avatar Level Firebending includes the ability to bend lava (a combination of fire and earth bending) and multiple fire whips. Wan was never shown to do either of these, but they are theoretically possible for him due to his status as the Avatar.

Airbending - The second element he learned to control, Air is one of Wan's strongest elements. He uses it almost as much as he uses fire. Airbending is based on following the path of least resistance, evading and redirecting. The martial art that the forms are based off is Ba Gua. Airbending is one of the most flexible of the bending arts, fitting for the element of freedom.

Airbending 'special' abilities that are common to Wan's time include cloudwalking and air funnels. Wan is shown to use both of these as well as many other more minor airbending techniques including enhanced movement and speed.

Avatar Level Airbending includes the ability to create an Air Sphere to contain someone or something, wind strikes strong enough to shatter or crack stone, and full-blown tornados. The first two Wan has been shown to do and as the Avatar he has the capability to to the last.

Waterbending - Another of Wan's strongest elements, the philosophy of the more traditional bending forms (based on T'ai Chi Ch'uan) focus on combining offensive and defensive moves that can both strike at an enemy and redirect their energy. Wan's use of water is most similar to that of the Southern Water Tribe style seen in Avatar: The Last Airbender, which is slightly more aggressive in it's use than the Northern Water Tribe style. Waterbending can be used to create and control ice, as ice is just frozen water.

Waterbending 'special' abilities include healing and bloodbending. Neither of which Wan has been shown to do and it is not likely he will ever be able to learn them. In the case of the second, he would refuse to learn due to being utterly repulsive to his entire outlook on life.

Avatar Level Waterbending includes the ability to create tsunamis and compress large amounts of water into almost impossible spaces. Wan was not definitively shown to do either of these in canon, but creating the Elemental Sphere usually involves a lot of water compressed into a much smaller circle for it's part of the binding.

Earthbending - The last element Wan learned to control and likely his weakest element. We don't get enough time with him in canon while he trains to know for sure, but while Wan is shown to have mastery over earth in his battle against Vaatu, it is all very basic uses of the traditional Earthbending techniques. Earthbending movements for most earthbenders is based on the Hung Gar style of Kung Fu. Wan is shown using the very strong, rooted stances when in practice and little other innovation.

Earthbending 'special' techniques include metalbending, sandbending, and minor polarization of the body. All of these techniques are shown to be done after Wan's time. While it's likely he could learn the last of those due to how often it is used by earthbenders to help them stick to rock walls, it is not likely that Wan could ever learn the first two. Metalbending in particular is a technique only a small percentage of Earthbenders are able to master and was not even thought possible until the time of Avatar Aang when Toph Beifong invented it.

Avatar Level Earthbending includes the ability to 'levitate' even larger chunks of rock than even master Earthbenders can and Tectonics - the moving of entire landmasses. Wan has shown the former in his fight against Vaatu, so it is very likely he could perform the latter.

Engerybending - The ability to bend the energy of oneself or another person. Usually used to unlock or remove the ability to bend. While Wan distinctly does not know how to energybend, he has been a subject of others bending his energy (Four Lion Turtles and Raava) and is aware of how it is achieved. He could easily learn this technique, but has had no reason to do so.

The Avatar State - The Avatar State was created when Wan bonded permanently with Raava during the Harmonic Convergence by directly touching the cosmic energy that bound the worlds while Raava was within him. The Avatar State for Wan is somewhat different for him than it is for the Avatars that come after. Wan has no past lives to call on for advice or to channel their knowledge. He has only Raava, the Spirit of Light he merged with, to aid him. They work in perfect harmony and he is able to speak to her if he needs to. Other Avatars have had the Avatar State trigger as a defense mechanism, but Wan is shown to have always had complete control while in the Avatar State, likely due to Raava's trust in how to use the power given to him. He can enter and exit the state at will.

Discussed with Mods via pms: In Haven, Wan would be able to enter the Avatar State and feel Raava's presence, but be unable to speak to Raava directly.

Spiritual Bridge - As the Avatar, Wan can send his spirit into the Spirit World at will, despite having closed the physical portals between the two. This ability is strongest during a Solstice, when the walls between the two worlds are at their weakest.

Physical Abilities - If his bending were taken away, Wan is not without any manner of defense. He was very physically agile and a capable fighter long before he gained the power of the elements. His training of the fighting forms that are used to channel the elements can translate easily into direct physical attacks and defenses if needed (though it would take him a minute to get used to the lack of an element following through with it). He has also been shown to be incredibly resilient to direct physical attacks and can take one hell of a hit without going down, as seen when he was thrown around a battlefield by Vaatu during the Harmonic Convergence. This is a clearly a long-developed physical tolerance as early on in his life he was shown to be unable to move after being hit by primitive fire throwers.

sarutobi sasuke | sengoku basara | reserved

[personal profile] paycheck 2014-05-09 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:

To start off, Sasuke is actually a fictional ninja. While most of the other Sengoku BASARA characters have a root in their historical counterparts, Sasuke is just a legend. There's no clear answer to where he originally popped up but he's always been associated with Sanada Yukimura and his -- still fictional -- group of ninjas, the Sanada Ten Braves. For now, there are no Ten Braves in SenBASA, just Sasuke so far (he does have a team of ninja behind him but there's no indication yet whether or not they're the Ten Braves) but, either way, it's important to mention his roots at least. His legend, in all counterparts, is always tied to Sanada Yukimura and that's really the main thing there is to say about Sasuke.

Sasuke is a loyal ninja, dedicated to Yukimura and whatever cause he chooses to follow. While, in SenBASA, Yukimura is part of the Takeda clan and follows Takeda Shingen loyally -- Sasuke's real loyalty lies just with Yukimura. This doesn't mean he isn't crazy loyal to Takeda Shingen either, he really really is, but it's safe to assume that he views Yukimura's loyalty to the Takeda clan as his own loyalty to the Takeda clan. He is decidedly Yukimura orientated and follows his lord and his lord's lord, no matter the cost. He is respectful of his lords and has a code of honor when it comes his duty and protecting his master. In a way, he takes it upon himself to help guide Yukimura in the right direction as Shingen does, just less from a "father figure" point of view and more in an "older brother" way. After all, Yukimura is younger than him in the series and still learning what it takes to be a good solider and a great leader from Shingen. So Sasuke, of course, helps fill in some of the blanks along the way.

Part of that means he has to be the reason to his lord's lack of and it's a role Sasuke takes on with stride. When Shingen isn't there to aim Yukimura the right direction, Sasuke will help as best he can in what his role allows. For example, when Yukimira's nobility gets his fellow warrior killed during his mission in S2, Sasuke reams him out and even threatens to serve another lord if Yukimura becomes the type of man to easily let his men get killed because of his own need to charge headlong into battle. Sasuke would not, most likely, but it shows Sasuke's own firm moral code and why exactly he would throw his lot in along with Yukimura and the Takeda. People who show care for the ones below them without hesitation, that is something Sasuke admires. Which makes sense because Sasuke so easily disregards clan association when he meets someone he considers good and worthy of his respect. His friendship with Kasuga shows this, along with how he treats others he encounters throughout the series. Sasuke's never shown outright hostility to anyone for no reason and is usually just friendly right off the bat until cause for otherwise. Being the sensible one of him and Yukimura might mean he should be the one more aggressive, especially in a warring time, but it doesn't. It just means Sasuke has to be the one who gathers, or provides, information first before Yukimura makes a decision (a hard task, when Yukimura's decisions are usually rather snap).

Honestly, Sasuke is a pretty chill guy -- not really one to get all caught up on things, he just sort of goes with it, whatever "it" is. He's the first to interject with humor or make a joke to rile someone up and he can always find a chuckle in even some of the most impossible situations. This doesn't mean he's never serious, just that he knows when to find the time to laugh and when not to. It helps that his humor is always snarky and point blank, the type where he smiles widely while insulting a person with the intention of leaving them a bit flabbergasted. He also has a penchant for not being entirely direct, just to see what happens (ex. telling Kasuga that the whistle he gave her will help her and it ends up being a hang glider, then telling her that it was illogical for him to show up when she blew it, despite letting her believe that's what the whistle did. Also, telling Yukimura about Kasuga enough to let Yukimura assume they were betrothed when Yukimura finally met her. Afterwards, hen Yukimura says she denied it, Sasuke instead jokes that Yukimura doesn't know enough about women to understand what she actually meant). It makes him kind of an asshole, actually.

Either way, this ninjerk as it is, is actually really really great at being a ninja. Which, duh, of course he should be considering he's Sarutobi Sasuke, but his competence is shown in the series quite often. The reliable information he provides to Shingen regularly, the ability to correctly assess what's happening quickly and to the point when witnessing events unfold, knowing who and when to send his messengers out most effectively. Even knowing how to play the person in front of him, how they will react, and how to use it to his advantage -- all good skills of Sasuke's. I could go on and on about it (his skill at fighting, detecting poisons by scent, crafting tools used on the job, etc etc) but it's quite a long list that boils down to: Sasuke is a damn good ninja. He is clever and adept and most of the skills he's learned his own. His few "video game powers" -- the cloning, the duplication, the shadow manipulation -- are just only few, his other and more worthy skills are anything any human can learn and master with practice. He's still, of course, abnormally talented because fictional legend but it does at least show that he's gifted.

Unfortunately, being gifted doesn't mean he's not a total slacker. He's loyal, he's reliable, he's skilled beyond belief, but that's all shown during turbulent times when he's needed most. When he's not? He's lounging in trees, bothering Kasuga, and messing around with Yukimura. He jokes to Kasuga once that she shouldn't do more than she's paid, despite often seeing him go the extra mile for Yukimura. It's hilarious, the contradiction in him, but he can afford it because of how on top of things he is. Sasuke deals in information so he always has his finger on the pulse like any good ninja should, but this means he doesn't mind napping in the shadows until he's needed. Really, Sasuke most likely believes in living a good, enjoyable life. It's obvious how much Sasuke absolutely loves being a ninja, that he couldn't possibly imagine doing anything else at all in his entire lifetime. In turn, to him being a ninja doesn't mean you have to sacrifice things like good humor and enjoying yourself. He has fun, in battle. He has fun, with his lord. He has fun, with his rival. He pokes and prods and messes about but in the end, he's still there: reliable, steadfast, and amused beyond belief.

Oh my god, okay so. Sasuke is skilled in regular ninja stuff that you'd think -- abnormally skilled, even (SB characters are RIDICULOUS but at least he doesn't fly-- wait. Wait, no, yeah. He does.) -- but then on top of that he has a few other powers.

- Cloning. Sort of? Sasuke can take the form of another person to the last detail, even mimicking the tone of their voice (though sometimes he gets the cadence wrong because it's still Sasuke and he doesn't know how not to be smug). He basically steals their whole physical identity.

- Duplication. This is tied into the cloning but he can do it to himself too. He's able to manipulate the shadows around him to form copies of him or whoever he's taken the appearance of. They all speak at the same time (though I think he can use only one of them to speak at a time too?) and they're all basically extensions of him -- just made with shadow. Like a house of mirrors at a carnival.

- Shadows. This is basically Sasuke's jam, he can manipulate shadows to his advantage, using them for the above and also for teleportation of a sort? He disappears into the shadows and appears in another place, using them for transport. It's like taking the whole "oh yeah ninjas work in the shadows" to a very literal and extreme level. He can probably use shadows as weapons too, I mean, I wouldn't put it past him.

Basically, it's a lot of trickery. He disappears, reappears, takes other people's forms, blah blah blah. He's good at hand to hand combat, obviously, and good with things like daggers and shurikens and being veryveryvery quiet. He's good with a sword too but it's probably out of necessity and it isn't his weapon of choice, unless it's like, a ninjato or something but!!! Giant shurikens!! That is totally where it's at. Also, he rides a horse by standing on top of it.

Items/Weapons:

1. His shuriken nunchucks. They are as dumb as they look but apparently he knows how to use them. They attach and reattach but it's really just one weapon.

2. A set of ten daggers. Regular ninja weapon is regular. He usually keeps them on his person.

3. One of the whistles from his ninja core like the one he gives Kasuga in S1, except, uh, the actual final version that doesn't explode on you. The whistle turns into a sort of rocket powered hang glider when you blow in it and is used for fast and undetectable travel, even at night. Ninjas.

Sample Entry Two:

Most of the time, Sasuke sorts things by priority. It's probably a bit of a callous thing to do but he figures, that's kind of his job. To be callous. Shingen was the one with the plan, with the grit to lead people into battle and imbue them with the confidence that they would win. He was a force of nature and that was his duty to fulfill. Yukimura is the protege, the one who is allowed to be naive and optimistic because he's still learning, going through the motions to become what Shingen is. He'll definitely become that one day, sure, but for now he has his role to play. Sasuke though, he knows he's not Shingen and he's not Yukimura. He has to stay back and he has to know what's going to happen before anything else. He has to ... prioritize. So, he makes a list.

The list takes different form and shape depending on the circumstances but it's usually about the same no matter what. It goes a bit something like...

1. Sanada Yukimura
2. Sanada Yukimura's safety
3. Most Effective Weapon in Current Vicinity/Exit Strategy
4. Amount of Time To Disarm/Kill Others Around Him
5. Takeda Shingen's whereabouts
6. Personal Safety
7. Food or something, probably. Regular stuff.

In Haven, circumstances have changed obviously and maybe Personal Safety has bumped up to two and Yukimura's own safety is his number one priority now, he still doesn't think it's changed all that much. The scenery, the people around him, even the date itself has changed but not his list. His list has stayed and it takes up the forefront of his mind more often than not these days. If it means he's spends more time sharpening his blades on pieces of rubble he found and looking over his shoulder a bit more, that's okay. He's done that before, he's skilled in this sort of paranoia. It's not uncomfortable to him. It's his anchor in an unfamiliar situation and despite how much he aches to go back to a simpler time, when the most he had to worry about was Kasuga noticing him taking a nap in her woods -- he... still has his list.

There's a comfort in that.

[personal profile] jutsu 2014-05-09 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:
for someone so apparently simple, there are actually a number of layers to naruto's personality. as a result of the attack on konoha (via one nine-tailed fox), the village was never the same. while his father had intended for the citizens of the village to look to naruto as something of a hero, it never quite panned out that way. the third was forced to resume position of hokage and he forbade the villagers to mention naruto's seal aloud.

as a result, naruto grew up in a climate of neglect and resentment.

innumerable villagers lost their lives that night, and for those who survived, forgetting the catastrophe was no easy task. for reasons naruto would grow up blind to, the villagers faced him with only distance and contempt, and further, these are codes of behavior that were passed on to their children- naruto's peers. the isolation was profound, and naruto ultimately attempted to overcome it by resorting to mischief.

his youth was spent as something of a prankster, where he acted out to gain some small amount of recognition from the people around him. he loudly proclaimed his desire to become the next hokage and insisted that when he did, everyone in the village would be forced to acknowledge him. they’re big words from a guy who has consistently been dead last. his classmates and teachers had all viewed him as a lazy child, one without talent and value- constantly making a mess of things.

and part of that was deliberate.

naruto could talk a good game about being the best, about being hokage one day- but he was also training harder than anyone else in his class. he put in long hours in a grueling effort to become stronger, and struggled a great deal to learn to master techniques taught in a style he was ill-equipped to learn from. however, he didn't begin to show significant improvement until after his graduation from ninja academy- when he was placed in a three man squad with his childhood crush sakura and his unofficial rival sasuke. under the guidance of former ANBU (a sort of secret service if you will) member kakashi, the three were able to overcome their prejudices towards one another and begin to function not just as a unit, but as friends. this group gave naruto his first real bonds, and it is one he continues to describe as a friendship that he would never betray- but more than that, one he is more than willing to die for. while he was still perceived as something of an idiot and was generally looked down on by his teammates, they began to both trust and understand each other. out of this understanding an intense rivalry was born. as a character foil, sasuke had always been admired by the villagers- considered a natural genius at each and every talent that would make a shinobi unique. naruto's constant desire to improve his abilities began to consolidate into a more focused goal- to be considered a challenge in sasuke's eyes. the pair used one another as yardsticks, measuring their progress and charting their own development, but also would not hesitate to protect one another in the midst of battle.

on the whole, naruto's path wasn't quite as glamorous as that of others he's encountered. many of his peers, whom he came to battle and later befriend, had special techniques that left them revered in some way amongst the other villagers. while these genin were looked at as something of 'naturals' like sasuke and neji- naruto had always been underestimated, if he had ever been considered in the first place. the power, respect, and techniques that he comes to learn all come through incredibly hard work and a never-say-die attitude. in naruto's mind, if he can hold true to nothing else, he will hold true to himself. when he makes a promise he intends to follow through no matter the obstacle- vowing that he'll never take back his words, as that is his own "way of the ninja."

it's that determination and uncompromising acceptance of himself and others that inspires the people he comes to know. naruto encourages those around him to look to the future with the courage to change it, insisting that there is always something to have faith in and that they should never be afraid to stand up and change the world with their own hands.

for all his dedication however, it's naruto's naivety that takes the stage around most everyone he encounters. first impression passes him off as a mouthy, cocky, ill-mannered kid who keeps his money in a frog wallet and sleeps in a hat with teeth on it. he has an almost childlike innocence, could probably live on nothing but ramen, and needs things to be broken down for him and explained in very simple terms. naruto has a habit of loudly declaring that he’s able to perform difficult tasks in a fraction of the time it should take, routinely eats expired food, and might be something of a pervert. (if his naked-chick jutsu is anything to go by.) he has a wealth of character flaws, and makes no effort to hide or disguise them.

his lack of foresight gets him into trouble even in relatively innocent situations because isn't in his personality to sit back and plan things out, or put a great deal of thought into a situation before acting. he's ruled in an enormous way by his heart and similarly, by his feelings. typically this means trusting his gut or the every day opening-his-mouth-only-to-stick-his-foot-in-it, but it also means that once he's decided something, he intends to follow through with absolutely no revision to the original plan.

if naruto has said that he's going to charge into an army of twenty guys and there actually happens to be twenty billion guys, he's still going to run right in. he is genuine above all else. the kid is completely unwilling to compromise the beliefs he holds himself to.

in truth, a majority of naruto's personality is as much a weakness as it is a strength. his exuberance and hyperactivity are great to inspire energy for both himself and his teammates, but it also causes him to be overlooked and underestimated. his dedication and headstrong determination will have him coming back for more and usually outlasting his opponent, but it also increases the amount of damage (physically and mentally) that he has to endure to get there. these qualities are iconic in and of themselves, but his strength/weakness tendencies are especially true of the bonds he shares with his friends. naruto holds to his comrades with such ferocity that at times, they are the only things keeping him going. he talks a good game about how his friends shouldn't throw their lives away, but the fact of the matter is- if he's taken a beating ten ways to sunday and someone is about to hurt his friend, he's more than likely going to pick his ass up and gimp over to stand in the way. similarly, if he's unable to prevent his companion from being hurt, their suffering pushes him over the mental brink pretty easily. he's quick to get fired up anyway, but naruto never calls on the power of the kyuubi quite as much as he does when he's trying to protect someone.

the kyuubi, as it stands, is a force unto itself. it gives him a massive powerboost, and allows naruto to not only bounce back, but to be able to go toe-to-toe with stronger enemies. for a character that spends his life defining himself in combat, this reads like a dream, but it isn't without a cost. kurama is a sentient being, and in his desire to break free, he spends a majority of the series playing to the emotions most likely to spring him from his ninja-jail; naruto's fear, hatred, anger, and sense of defeat. these emotions, and the need to maintain some measure of control over them, force naruto to maintain a strength of will to keep kyuubi at bay as much as they wind up isolating him from others.

despite this, there is something of a permanent smile on naruto's face, one that as a child was used to cover up his loneliness but now has become part of his lifestyle. he's unafraid to challenge the norms, himself, society, and others- but this is never really done with any sense of maliciousness. while he may look arrogant, he doesn't hesitate to ask for help and is unafraid of looking like an idiot when he doesn't understand something the first three hundred million times. naruto will fight no matter the odds, and even after the treatment he received as a child, he's come to truly care for both konoha and it's citizens. it's a passion and loyalty that extends to all those he's come to count as friends, and it isn't easily shaken. when sasuke defects from konoha, naruto makes his promise to sakura; to bring him back no matter what. defeated and faced with the knowledge that sasuke has severed his bonds with them of his own free will- naruto remains determined to keep his word at any cost.

when shippuden starts, it'd be easy to say that naruto hasn't really changed at all.

which is, well, a little silly considering he disappears from konoha for two and a half years to train on the side of a mountain with a legendary ninja/peeping-tom extraordinaire as his instructor. he waltzes back into konoha with the same unbridled optimism he's always possessed and just as much self-confidence, albeit it seems mildly tempered by some worldly understanding now. and by some, i mean a marginal amount. he isn't quite as obnoxious as he was as a child, but retains the brash, outspoken nature that has become his trademark. he still charges headlong into pretty much anything, but now seems more willing to listen to reason. he plays into teamwork more than he had before and we see that he is less likely to go busting into enemy territory alone. which is to say he does still bust in, but it's actually coupled with the occasional thought to whether or not having backup would help. we see him talked down by his instructors and teammates more than he seemed able to before- but his temper looks just as short as ever. he's more readily influenced by the fox's power than we've seen prior as well, though we are given to understand that his mountaintop training was focused almost exclusively on learning to control it. to his credit naruto has a better understanding of his abilities now, and the dangers therein, but it isn't perfect. he is a perpetual work in progress, and remains unafraid to acknowledge that fact.

all of that aside, naruto is a devoted companion and hard working ninja, things that endear him to others after the initial assault of his personality.

[personal profile] jutsu 2014-05-09 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Abilities/Powers:
    uzumaki heritage
it’s possible that naruto inherited his clan’s long lifespan, but we know for certain that he has an immensely powerful lifeforce. he survives things that should have killed him a number of times, most notably when kurama (the ninetails) was removed from him. while a portion of his ability to heal at a rapid rate can be attributed to his uzumaki heritage, it’s believed that the rest of this ability is owed to the fox.

    weapons training
like the other ninja, he's been trained in the use of kunai, shuriken, razor wire, and smoke bombs. he has some talent with shuiken, but doesn't rely on them much.

    chakra
a staple in naruto canon, chakra is a moulding of physical and spiritual energy found in every sell of the body and mind. characters harness and release it in varying ways, often (but not always) with hand seals as a way to release it. the most common uses are walking on water and climbing up/running through trees. naruto’s chakra reserves are considered to be off the chart in comparison to his teachers and peers, but prior to his knowledge and awareness of kurama (the fox) he had terrible chakra control and wasn’t able to allocate his chakra effectively. naruto has advanced enough through the series that he is now able to manipulate huge portions of his chakra and share it with thousands of people at once. in the most recent chapters, naruto has been shown capable of rekindling extinguishing chakra in others as well as sensing the location of the other half of the sage of six path’s chakra (conveniently located in sasuke.)

    taijutsu
the physical component of his ninja training and is meant to be used with chakra based techniques- but certainly isn’t required to be. it’s all the kicking, punching, throwing that’s expected of a martial arts anime.

    ninjutsu
basically any technique that lets the user do something that would otherwise be impossible, ninjutsu’s uses are varied in purpose and execution from individual to individual. naruto is probably best known for his shadow clones, of which he can make upwards of a thousand, and naruto is able to learn whatever his clones would- which means he can reap the benefits of a year’s worth of training in just a few days. he also uses rasengan- a technique invented by naruto’s father. it’s basically a ball of wind that naruto adjusts as he learns- it becomes huge, or turns into a shuriken, whathaveyou. he’s also able to summon toads to aid him in battle, in exchange for a portion of his chakra.

    nature
of the five basic elemental nature transformations, naruto has an affinity for wind. he goes on to combine his affinity with techniques he already knows, as well as to collaborate with the toads he summons, and with other ninja.

    jinchuriki
as kurama’s keeper, the fox is basically the ultimate powerboost. while naruto’s chakra reserves are already formidable (approximately 4x his teacher’s abilities) when he is harnessing kurama’s chakra, that estimate hits over a 100. their chakra is essentially moulded together, as naruto has been kurama’s jinchuriki since the day he was born, and naruto has always reaped the benefits of this. initially, kurama would intervene (acting through naruto’s body) on his behalf when naruto’s life was in danger- but it also played to naruto’s weaknesses, taking advantage of his rage and anger to push it’s own agenda. kurama’s chakra regularly increased naruto’s speed and strength, and allows him to heal from wounds in seconds.

    sage training
sage training allows it’s practitioners to draw the energy of nature into themselves and combine it with their own chakra. it’s incredibly difficult and to do it at all requires the practitioner to be perfectly calm- so it can’t be performed in combat. it’s another stats boost that allows naruto to sense the energy of everything and everyone around him, makes him faster, stronger, more durable, and ups his ninjutsu abilities. once he’s in sage mode (of which naruto can only achieve a limited number of times) he’s able to use a taijutsu stype called frog kata. he uses the natural energy around himself to detect and identify others even from ridiculous distances. he’s similarly able to predict the movements of his enemies and dodge accordingly. while naruto typically achieves sage mode through meditation, in recent chapters he has a new sage mode through bro-fisting the sage of six paths and combining that power with his tailed beast mode.

note: these are all from a previous game, one where naruto has had approximately 2.5 years of time to develop cr. if you feel that you would prefer a sample more closely connected to haven's setting&themes, please don't hesitate to let me know

Sample Entry Two:
    It's that billboard.
The billboard is the worst part.

Naruto hasn't spent the majority of the day looking at it so much as he's noticed that it's kindof impossible to avoid. There's a way to see it from every house on the row! Er. Swirly, thing. It's one of the (many) things about this place that has left Naruto literally scratching his head. While Konoha hadn't been neat or orderly in it's sprawl- at least the buildings had lined up right. They made roads and stuff. These are just like one big spiral around that creepy ass picture.

IN HAVEN, WE ARE ALL SAFE... TOGETHER.
What the hell does that even mean? Safe from what? Naruto's mouth scrunches up, features working themselves into a frown. Even though it's just a sliver, because his building is at an angle- he can still see the thing. His arms lift and fingers scrub irritably through his hair. He's going to have to get curtains or something. It'll keep light out, but at least that thing won't be watching him anymore. It gives him the creeps.

Oh, and he should probably figure out this communicator thing works. Naruto doesn't really care how he wound up here, but he's got a lot of stuff to get back to at home. He can't waste any time.

!! i also wanted to add a note here-
i'm aware that haven has drawn upon multiple subjects and themes through the game, one of which is uzumaki, and i wanted to offer myself up for hideousness! since. he's an uzumaki. and has a plethora of swirly patterns on his clothing, in his name, and on his belly. i plan to throw a notice up in the ooc when i intro- but i wanted to give you guys a heads up first!
i make bad life choices u_u

[personal profile] massacring 2014-05-10 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Personality:
Being the best isn't all it's made out to be.
When you're strong, you become arrogant and withdrawn.
Even if what you sought after was your dream.

The Uchiha prodigy is not a far fetched label to place on Itachi. A genius in his own right, there's no stretch in saying he's one of the most talented shinobi born in recent history. Surpassing all his schoolmates in the academy and outshining many people even within his clan, Itachi has always felt the weight of the clan burdened on his shoulders.

Despite the focus that the Uchiha hold toward their own ideals as a clan, Itachi was far and away from feeling the same. His loyalty runs deep, almost to a fault, though it isn't to his clan -- it's to the village that he was born and raised in. A pacifist at heart, he would do anything to keep the village safe and prolong its sense of peace, not even seeking vengeance when the actions of a village elder caused the death of his best friend. Because of his pacifism, Itachi never did care much for the ninja lifestyle. Seeing war and the results of it at a young age, it pushed any desire for violence from his heart.

Despite this desire for peace, Itachi was still counted as one of the most skilled shinobi in the village. One of the youngest ANBU (special black ops) captains to ever be inducted into the organization, his skills were unparalleled even at such a young age. It also allowed for Itachi to work as a double agent between the Uchiha clan and the village elders. It left little space for him to form lasting bonds outside of his best friend, Shisui, and his brother, Sasuke.

You and I are flesh and blood. I'm always going to be there for you,
even if it's only as an obstacle for you to overcome.

Despite his calm and caring nature as a child, that was seemingly wiped clean as he ascended through the ranks of ANBU, becoming even more prevenlant in the weeks leading up to having to eradicate the Uchiha clan on the orders of the Konoha elders. When the clan began to plan a coup d'etat, Itachi had a choice to make: side with his clan and face death, or side with Konoha and erase the Uchiha clan from existence before civil war broke out.

In an effort to protect his younger brother and to provide Konoha the ability to continue in its peace, Itachi sided with the village. The cost was great, leading to him having to kill his own parents. Even during their last moments with Itachi, his father told him that he understood his choices, telling Itachi that he had always been a "kind child". This rings true in the fact that no matter how busy Itachi was, he always made time for his younger brother in some capacity, and held a great deal of kindness and empathy for those around him.

Regardless of his loyalty to his village, his desire to protect Sasuke always took precedence over this. Itachi had a kind heart, always having Sasuke's best interests in mind, though he went about it in all the wrong ways, leading Sasuke down a path of broken bonds, hatred, and a desire to kill Itachi and overcome him.

He even went so far as to tell Sasuke that his bond with him had all been an act, a ploy to make Sasuke love and care about him so that he would hate him that much more when Itachi finally killed their family. His last display of emotion is shown when readying his sword to kill his parents, bent and sobbing over the decisions he had to act upon.

From then on, he became a more detached and cold person, calculating everything and showing no real emotion at all. The only one that ever presented itself was when Itachi would be impressed by the capabilities an opponent would show him or the tiniest bit of relief that broke through when he found out that Sasuke had survived the fight against Deidara.

Those who can't acknowledge their real selves are bound to fail.

Itachi was quite clearly wise beyond his years and more intelligent than almost anyone else around him. He wasn't called a child prodigy or genius for no reason at all. He was good at citing the lies in others or knowing when the proverbial wool was being pulled over his eyes; he was very perceptive to the people and events around him, able to interpret the smallest actions and use it to his advantage, especially when it came to the more violent encounters.

The only time that Itachi was ever exceedingly cruel or callous is when it comes to Sasuke; a façade that was purely used to make Sasuke hate him more so that he would avenge the clan that Itachi stole away from him when they were children. He went so far as to tell Sasuke to hate him, to run and hate him and then to try and kill him. His cruelty only continued every time they met; whether it was telling Sasuke that he lacked the hatred he needed, or stating that he only allowed Sasuke to live through the massacre so that Itachi could later steal his eyes to take his own Sharingan to the next level.

Forgive me Sasuke. It ends with this.

His love for Sasuke, his utter dedication and adoration for his younger brother and his loyalty to the village, was very much all that kept Itachi going throughout the years. He joined Akatsuki for the pure reason of being able to watch over Sasuke and protect him (as well as Konoha) from any threats either within the village or outside of it. Itachi kept the fake personality of indifference and uncaring until his last breath when he offered Sasuke one last smile and transferred his Mangekyou abilities into his brothers eyes. It had, after all, helped to cement the fact that Sasuke would be the one to kill Itachi and get the revenge that his little brother so desired.

Itachi had constructed their final battle perfectly; his health was failing, the Sharingan had been deteriorating his eyesight to near blindness, and Sasuke was verging on impatience at not being able to seek his revenge. Itachi met Sasuke on a battleground, directed their fight in such a way that would allow his illness to finally take over his body for good, while allowing Sasuke to believe that Itachi hated him and wanted to surpass him until the very end. Itachi's selflessness always did come out in spades when it came to Sasuke.

The village does have its dark side and its inconsistencies,
but I'm still Konoha's Uchiha Itachi.

Because of his choices, Itachi never formed lasting bonds after his treason against his clan. It's less that he views bonds as a weakness, as he tells Sasuke they are, but more that his bonds become a source of guilt and pain. Instead, he found his purpose for living in leading Sasuke on a path to revenge for the clan, and in protecting Konoha at all costs.

Itachi is shown to trust very few people after defecting from Konoha once the massacre was over. He put a great deal of trust into his Akatsuki partner Kisame so that they were able to fight together without a hitch, and because he knew full and well that Kisame respected him and his abilities.

The only other person that Itachi was shown placing any visible trust into was Naruto, whom he transferred some of his power from Shisui into so that he would, in the end, be able to either save Sasuke from what might be his inevitable path of destruction, or kill him. Everything Itachi did, every move he made, was generally tied back to Sasuke and Itachi's desire to lead him down the path that Itachi thought was best.
