APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN!
The next processing date is Friday 11th October

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every two weeks, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. If you wish to request a specific apartment, please do so in the relevant part of the application. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Every attempt will be made to place a character in their chosen apartments, though this may not always be possible depending on the slots available.

Applications are open constantly, but are only processed every other Friday at 7PM EST. The Saturday following acceptance, an IC mingle log will be posted for characters to be introduced to the game.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old.

Hayley White // Original Character // reboot

[personal profile] losemyfaith 2013-08-16 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality: One thing that has characterized Hayley almost her entire life is her mile long stubborn streak. Many a would-be playmate would unintentionally alienate her with their ideas of how little girls were supposed to act, because she would immediately turn around and decide she had to prove them wrong. This underlying attitude of going against the grain has worked to her advantage as she's matured, however, becoming quite the pillar of solidarity. She’s difficult to pressure into anything nor will she take suggestions at face value without coming to her own conclusion first. By the same token, she can be outright vindictive at her worst if given reason. She knows how to hold a grudge and will if the issue is of enough importance. She can tell the difference between petty issues and legitimate affronts, thankfully, but in any case don't think that this means she'll forgive and forget so quickly.

To some degree she fancies herself an academic, but this really just consists of her spending 90% of her spare time reading almost anything she can get her hands on. In her younger years she was never known for being particularly diligent or inquisitive; she never went to college, and in fact never even finished high school. Despite this, at some point in her life came an absolutely voracious need for knowledge. If she had to give a guess however she'd say it was probably during her time in Mr. Allen's employ. Amongst the many rooms in his large home was a modest but well stocked library, and since she basically had run of the place whenever she wasn't working it slowly became one of her favorite spots in the whole house. Being able to pick up a book and read about whatever she wanted at her own pace made the learning process so much more appealing than the public school system ever did, and she hasn't stopped since. Today she owns and runs the only library in the town of St. Talia, as well as keeping a personal collection which includes some much older, more obscure texts.

From this developed a tendency to hinge on facts almost to a fault. Brash and bratty as a girl she got into trouble more times than she can count because of acting too quickly and with too much force. This finally came back to bite her when she made her deal, especially since her later research would lead her to believe he was overpaid for his services. This only reinforces her need to be as fully informed as possible before making major decisions. It toes the line between strength and weakness in that given a convincing enough trail of breadcrumbs to follow her own convictions are still perfectly able to do her in. There is little else that she finds more enraging than being purposely led astray, however, and it's one offense that she won't let pass.

It dovetails nicely with her stubbornness; her emotions have always run high and she knows it. Maturity has allowed her to learn when something is actually worth that kind of investment, but little in the way of properly expressing it. Looking back on a lot of decisions she's made it becomes apparent that a good part of the regrets she has can be traced to her choices at key moments. She thoroughly believes that any of her problems she has now are her own fault because of how she used to be, and she has gradually closed herself off in the name of gaining objectivity. The actual results of this are mixed to say the least, as even as recently as when she began testing her abilities in the most scientific manner she could manage underlying emotional reactions muddled the whole thing. Self-evaluation has never been one of her strong suits, and nothing less than a great shock or hindsight has really led her to recognize when she's wrong about herself.

This approach to expressing emotion is not limited to the negative ones, though. When she's happy she will most likely just be content with whatever she's doing at the moment. Smiles are small and somewhat infrequent, but this doesn't devalue the feelings at all or mean she doesn't experience and enjoy them. She is usually at her happiest when she is alone with a book or in the morning when she has her coffee; anytime she is able to relax and be alone really since she lacks any close friends at the moment. She's been told she looks younger when she's genuinely smiling, not an effect she cares much about or is able to confirm. It certainly doesn't mean much of anything to anyone else either, but to anyone who knows her well enough it doesn't just make the years seem to fall away, but overall she seems more alive. It's an important distinction; she has been so concerned with death for so long that it shows even in the lines of her face. The fact that she can't really see this for herself is highly reflective of the disparity between the way she views herself and how she truly is.

Don't let any of the emotional over analyzing fool you though, she knows at her simplest she's just an ornery old woman and has no problem with making sure you know it too. Getting to know her as she is now is difficult. She's prickly when it comes to new acquaintances and tends to leave bad first impressions. The fact that she just does not give a damn about this either just adds to the off-putting effect. Her attitude is easily likened to a cactus; little sympathy for much of anyone, but it's not like it's personal. On the other hand, it can be surprisingly worth the effort it takes to get past the spines. Either way, it's probably no trouble to her.

Hayley White // Original Character // reboot

[personal profile] losemyfaith 2013-08-16 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Abilities/Powers: In simplest terms, Hayley is "exempt from the usual trappings of human mortality" as the reaper she sold her soul to put it. This means that she's unable to contract disease, physically age, as well as able to rapidly repair wounds provided there is nothing obstructing in said wound. She is able to experience temporary periods of 'death', but her body will not decompose due to the supernatural element of her regeneration. The length of these periods is generally proportional to the amount of lethal damage, and they are emotionally distressing to undergo. A gunshot to the head might last only a few minutes in order to close up the skull and repair the brain, while more grievous harm will be longer (an instance where the standard game rules regarding death would take effect probably fall under this category). Limbs can be regrown (excluding the head) or just reattached. Decapitation is in fact the best way to keep her down, as the head cannot be regrown. Unless someone else reattaches her head to her body she will technically be 'dead' indefinitely. It is worth mentioning, however, that while Hayley has done some liberal testing she is not really aware of the full extent of her regenerative abilities, even though I've outlined them here.

Outside of that, Hayley does have the ability to defend herself when she needs to, but it's fairly rudimentary. Her aim is horrible (if you give her a gun she's more likely to hit you with it than fire a shot) and her fighting skill is around a bar fight level. Give her a crowbar or a baseball bat and she can really wreck someone's shit if the occasion calls for it, but don't expect her to be some kind of highly trained fighter.

She is fairly fluent in Latin as well, a skill she learned solely to read and translate some of the oldest books in her possession.

Items/Weapons:
Her brother's dogtags - Circa WWII, these have become a staple in her wardrobe since coming into her possession. Hayley has taken to wearing them every day once she inherited them with her parents’ things as a memento from her old life.

Cigarettes/lighter - A standard zippo lighter tucked into a partially filled cigarette carton. She knows it's a nasty habit but regenerative powers don't protect you from nicotine addiction it seems.

Sunglasses - Just a regular pair of sunglasses. Cheap as shit but they get the job done.

Sample Entry:
Alright then, ‘Haven,’ a few things need to be addressed here.

[It’s a simple voice transmission. No need to be fancy.]

I really don’t know what the hell you people or playing at by bringing me here, I have things to do, etc. I’m not even going to bother with asking you to put me back. The problem here?

Well the problem is that you could have just fucking asked. Did no one ever teach you the word ‘please?’ It’s an inconvenience no matter how you slice it, but at least I would have the pleasure of knowing what is even going on.

Or is this just going to turn into some slasher flick sometime soon? In which case the answer is no. [Never mind that she’s already here.]

Secondly the accommodations are horrible, there’s not a scrap of reading material for miles. It’s fucking disgraceful and that’s all there really is to say on the matter.

As for the rest of you lot, [She’s starting to sound less irate. A bit… maybe. Mostly just tired.] I’d appreciate a rundown if you’re willing to give it.

[and with that said she sighs, followed by the hushedwhump of someone falling back on a mattress before the feed cuts.]

Sample Entry Two: Her footsteps are slow and sure up the stairs, she suspects anything less at the moment would be a ticket for disaster. Books plied along the edges of the stairs created hazard enough, and it takes all the energy she can muster just to sidestep those when she sees them. After having been awake nearly three days it’s a wonder she can even manage that much.

It’s almost embarrassing how engrossed she could become at times. It all had started after she had made the move into the library final, and in taking stock of the stacks saw a set of shelves in utter disarray. A remnant from when the room was a crime scene, she supposes, but regardless it was now her responsibility to set things straight. And she had done that well, if she did say so herself, the only problem arose when she discovered the crack in the wall behind them. The crack had turned out to be the edge of something that turned out to be a doorframe that ended up leading to a room that someone had apparently gone to great pains to hide.
And that is how she found herself on one of her strings of all-nighters, parsing through the dust covered contents of the room. Whatever The Lost Pantheon was, it was big at one point in time. It was unnerving how a group of gods so revered was utterly absent from the historical record in any shape or form, and it was even more disturbing to find a journal describing with such detail the role and abilities of Death’s psychopomps, quite a few of which she had witnessed herself. (Not to mention the eyeroll-worthy tidbit that the ‘Death’ she knew was pompous enough to steal his apparent boss’ name.)

Her hands tangle in the chain of the dog tags around her neck. It was rare that Hayley found herself feeling this uncertain, but whether that was to blame on the lack of sleep was yet to be determined. All of it was heavier than her eyelids, though, and the very thought of thinking through what all she’d discovered was unfathomable in and of itself. A night’s sleep and the morning’s cup of coffee were much easier and more attainable things to dwell on at the moment. She drifts off soundlessly and with no trouble thanks to her exhaustion, the mass of information she’d found set aside in favor of a dreamless sleep.

Personality: If you consider yourself a normal person and ever met Touko Aozaki, probably because she first mysteriously approached you and offered to make something for you (no don't refuse her it's not like she's imposing her ideas on you - it'll be a success, seriously!!), then your impression of her would be that of a good-natured, cheery, sharp, witty, and intelligent woman. She's also a heavy smoker, but her high competence and positive attitude would more than make up for any smaller 'failings': her image is that of a relaxed and easygoing person.

That's when Touko has her glasses on. Befitting of the Cool Big Sis trope and a pretty chill boss to work under, she's usually mature, kind, reasonable and very knowledgeable, but she's also more than capable of being whimsical and random. For example, she can sometimes react very strongly to small and silly things like a child would, such as shoving her hands angrily in her coat pockets and pouting fiercely at receiving a parking violation (spoiler: she never went to driving school and Drives Like Crazy), or showing earth-shattering shock at the fact that Mikiya doesn't know what a pop-a-point pencil is (they were popular when she was a student!). This occasionally borderlines on Touko coming off as outright scatterbrained, because some of the things she do can seriously make those close to her wonder just how weird her thought process may be. ...Like the time when she spent ALL her money on a trinket that caught her eye, going so far as to be unable to pay her employee on time, have the audacity to ask him to lend her cash instead, and to top it all off, loudly declare that what she bought was probably useless, but it can gain more worth if she gives it time. ...She's not always like that, of course, but working for her definitely comes with its share of "risks", because she's fairly unpredictable and quite good at throwing everyone off-guard with ridiculous things from time to time. Those close to her should also be careful - she can be a merciless teaser when she's in the mood. Not unlike a cat, though she also very much IS someone whom you want to stay on the good side of.

The reason for that is simple. She gets... unpleasant, when she takes off her glasses. That usually happens for two reasons: she's either discussing about otherworldly things, or things are about to get nasty because someone crossed a line that they shouldn't have. This is because while she supposedly runs a paranormal detective agency named "Garan no Dou" (The Grotto of Monastery) while taking on diverse other jobs, including architect designer, puppet maker, speech therapist, and so on, she remains to be a powerful Magus of great power and fame. She used to study at the Mages' Association, and her goal was to reach the Origin of mankind by researching the workings and evolutions of the human body, which is why she's such an excellent puppet maker. She ran away from the Academy because of her sealing designation, however, which is why she chose to set up shop in Japan and adopt a hermit-like lifestyle. Currently, she is a wanted figure at the Association.

That said, while the ordinary world coexists with the supernatural one, they should also be kept separate from each other because of the clashing differences, though occasionally crossing over is of course inevitable. Because Touko was originally born by the supernatural as a magus, her little business also deals with paranormal death cases, which she's fine with handling for extra cash. The Association's supervision is loose on Japan too, which is a plus, so that lets her do things at her own pace. Due to the fact that she was such a good researcher, she possesses a vast expanse of knowledge, which in turn makes her lectures and explanation that much more important and informative. When talking about these things, she's serious, aloof, to the point, and while she can go on, every word is thought-inducing and meaningful to the situation at hand. There's also a violent and predatory side to her personality: while it manifests as relentless teasing when she's under sunnier dispositions, if one crosses her as a magus, they are not likely to make it out alive. The best example would be in the fifth installment, where she outright kills Cornelius Alba not because he injured Mikiya, not because he helped Araya kidnap Shiki, not because the guy has a huge hateboner against her, but because he made the mistake of calling her "Dirty Red". Having made that rule back at the Academy, she still upholds it rigidly years after she left. Even Araya, the big bad who cooperated with Cornelius, knew this, so while he saved Alba from getting killed by Touko the first time because Alba formally challenged her when she came to the apartment complex and lost, Araya basically allowed Alba to walk right back into death again because the poor sod brought it upon himself by saying the wrong words.

Abilities/Powers: As a powerful sorceress, a magus of the Nasuverse, Touko has Magic Circuits in her body that allow her to perform thaumaturgy. 20, to be precise, which is a lot for one of Aozaki descent. As all magi, she's capable of creating Bounded Fields, which are barriers that keep ordinary people away, and mark the area as her workshop. If another magus was to come in uninvited, that's commonly taken as act of hostility and transgression.

For Touko's more personalized abilities, as far as canon material is concerned:

Mystic Eyes: Eyes that allow her to see things that normal people can't see, such as fairies and ghosts. She's born with them.

Rune Magic: She utilizes Norse Runes. Just by drawing them in thin air with a lit cigarette and reciting them, she can cast offensive magic, and in the 4th movie, she mentions that her runes can directly set to burn the heart of a living organism.

Puppet Crafting: She's capable of artificially reproducing parts of the human body that are identical and/or surpass the original. After Shiki lost her arm to fighting Fujino Asagami, Touko made her a new one that's capable of going so far as to grab spirits. In the first movie, Shiki lost that arm again when Fujioh Kyrie possessed the part, forcing Shiki to cut it off in order to break free of her control. Following that, Touko made her a new one again that's even more durable, and commented that it'll be able to withstand being stomped on by an elephant.

Additionally, she received a sealing designation originally because she was able to reproduce a puppet that was an exact replica of her own body - Magic Circuits and everything. Not one that was inferior, not one that was superior, but her complete equal in terms of ability. Going by her own words, however, a puppet is just a container: they are empty if they lack a soul to move them. She seems to have found a way to connect her soul, her consciousness, between her real body and her doll (though which is which has now become impossible to tell - it's not important anyway, and Touko herself dismisses the supposed difference between a clone and an original), which is what allowed her to return to the apartment complex for a second time, after she was "killed" by Araya on her first visit. Araya kept her head alive because he knew that if that was destroyed, it would "activate the switch" to her second body, which is likely synonymous to her consciousness transferring itself to the waiting container when the first body is assuredly "dead" by some means. Cornelius didn't, however, and sealed his own fate when he uttered "dirty red", which is why Araya allowed him to take Touko's head and destroy it, allowing her to come back in her new body later that evening.

Box of Spirits: Her orange suitcase of doom that was only shown in the fifth movie. She takes it with her when she leaves for the apartment complex where Araya and Alba held Shiki captive in order to take her back, and there's two different ones.

► Projection machine: It is said that Touko lost her familiar when she lost to Aoko in one-on-one combat, so this is what she made to replace it. It operates like a projector: it works by shaping an ether clump into a monstrous shadow cat. The cat itself will not be destroyed unless the suitcase is destroyed, and it has the ability to heal Touko if it overlaps on her. It's what she brings to the Apartment complex on her first visit, and how it managed to get Araya's puppet even after Araya supposedly crushed it and destroyed it.

► Sealed Box: She brings it with her on her second visit. It contains an Elritch monstrosity with no discernible form (okay well... just a lot of mouths and thorn-like tentacles) that simply took hold of Alba and ate him whole, and later on, even Araya remarks that this thing inside the box is strong enough to defeat him. Her strongest offensive asset: this box just drags its victim in to devour them, the end.

Items/Weapons: Her Sealed Box, a pack of her Dragon Smoke cigarettes, and her glasses.
Sample Entry: An old entry!
Sample Entry Two: Second Magic, is it?

The redhead magus wrinkles her nose. …No, that can’t be right. Dimensional travel may fit the criteria, but that’s about the only thread of similarity she can pick out. The mana in the air here is thin, VERY thin. Not surprising, that the magical energies of the atmosphere is as poor as the landscape that can already be seen through the naked eye. Any spark worth investigating originates from a fellow captive, though admittedly, part of Touko still wonders if she didn’t make a REALLY impulsive decision one day and ended up crafting and leaving a doll somewhere she really should not have.

That, or this town’s into copies too. Who knows? She’s none too pleased with such an unexpected awakening, for as messy as her office may have looked to a third party, the woman sauntering through the ruins now while chewing on a cheap Taiwanese cigarette is someone who highly prizes her freedom. At least this can’t be something sprung by the Mages’ Association, which is good, but no amount of calm reasoning can QUITE soothe that boiling annoyance that she still feels growling in the pit of her stomach.

For all the interesting potential one may uncover in a new environment around new people, they just HAD to choose the worst timing, huh?

No one calls Touko Aozaki ‘dirty red’ and gets away with it. This is a rule with good reason because she has never failed to enforce it. She was just on her way to prove that point to her terribly sad ex-colleague when suddenly, she found herself in Haven. That she’s unable to acquaint that clown of a Lord-rank magus with a little something of her own creation is rather infuriating, even more so when she’s holding that very suitcase in her hands now as she continues her walk in the ruins.

Having exhausted its fuse, she carelessly tosses the butt of the smoke aside and stamps it out with the heel of her pumps before retrieving a pair of glasses from the chest pocket of her orange coat. Bah, the longer she dwells, the more pissed she’ll get, but she’s also a nice and rational person. Hell certainly has no wrath as a woman scorned, but it wouldn’t be the same to take it out on some other poor sod that has nothing to do with the only reason why she’s so hellbent on killing Cornelius Alba. –Oh, but more importantly!

They said that this town takes in people from different worlds, right? Then wouldn’t this mean there are plenty of pretty and interesting girls she could take an interest to? That’ll definitely help her mood, for sure! It’s with that uplifting prospect in mind that she finally places the spectacles onto the bridge of her nose, the cold and nonchalant look on her face instantly melting into something far more warm and pleasant. --Ah, there we go. Touko Aozaki, freelance puppetmaker/artisan, is now ready to make the best out of her impromptu stay! As for all those other warnings she’s been hearing buzzing since the start of the day?

Eh, one thing at a time. She’ll start rushing and get impulsive when she feels like it, thanks all the same.

Character Name: Misaka WORST
Canon: Toaru Majutsu no Index
Canon Point: end of New Testament v3 + roughly six months in [community profile] a_facility
Background/History: The character's page on the Toaru wiki is a tad on the skimpy side. Here's a full background I wrote up for other games where this section was required to be written out. The first part focuses entirely on what led up to WORST's creation, as it's extremely important.

A long time ago, a little girl named Misaka Mikoto got tricked into giving away her DNA map. All she wanted to do was help the doctors find a cure for muscular dystrophy. They said her electrical powers and her potential to become one of the rare Level Fives (espers who were essentially one-person armies power-wise) could prove helpful. Little Mikoto never fathomed that many years later she would learn what they really did with her DNA map.

Cloning. Scientists and researchers wanted to see if they could clone a Level Five, a rare power level. The first attempts resulted in some seriously substandard clones. Their specs were somewhere around Level Two. As the differences in specs between levels were exponential, this made it seem a hopeless endeavor. The project was abandoned until a later point, when Radio Noise was started up. A project to mass produce clones. This was the Second Production Plan/Second Season. Eventually, the mass-produced clones were acquired for use in the Level Six Shift Experiment, a project designed to level up the Number One ranked Level Five Accelerator from his current spot far above everyone else to the mythical Level Six: Invincibility. Academy City's supercomputer the Tree Diagram predicted that because 128 Railguns could not be produced—128 Level Five Misaka Mikotos, that is—that preparing 20,000 lower level clones and having them battle to their death against Accelerator would do the trick. The Misaka Network and its collective memory would enable the clones to learn much more quickly and compensate for the gap between power levels, blah blah blah. Clearly someone didn't give enough shits about the ethics and human rights issues.

The first 9800 or so experiments were performed indoors, where no one could interfere with the perfectly controlled and staged battle scenarios. The remainder had to be staged outdoors. This meant that to avoid being discovered by the general public, the pace at which they were performed slowed down by a lot. This would explain why only 10031 experiments had finished before a major error occurred during the 10032nd experiment. A powerless Level Zero not involved with the experiment, Kamijou Touma, stumbled upon the experiment ground after learning about the horrific experiment from Mikoto and several clones. Touma had a special ability in his right hand called the Imagine Breaker. It could negate any supernatural power it touched. He was only a Level Zero because such a thing was immeasurable/undetectable by the System Scan's instruments. In a nutshell, Touma defeated Accelerator, who had always used his powers to commit one-hit KOs and the like, in a punching fest. The project was put on hold. How could they continue when the person they believed was the strongest esper out there got his ass kicked by someone incredibly weak? On top of that, the satellite housing the Tree Diagram had been destroyed weeks earlier through an unknown attack. There was no way to recalculate everything.

That was August 21st evening, August 22nd morning. Since then there have been a number of incidents regarding the Network, its many Misaka units, and Last Order. The remaining roughly 10,000 Sisters were distributed throughout the entire world, while only about ten remained in Academy City. On August 31st Accelerator did a heel-turn and saved Last Order from a virus that would have caused the Sisters to go berserk and attack civilians indiscriminately, only to wind up shot in the head as thanks for his heroics. His doctor got the clones' permission to use their network to electronically help compensate for Accelerator's brain damage and lend him calculation space.

Fast forward to October 17th. Accelerator had recently been forcibly enlisted in the city's Dark Side and made to do the city's dirty work. Through a certain turn of events he met one of the biggest secrets in Academy City, codenamed DRAGON. DRAGON, as it turned out, was a higher dimensional being much like an angel if one were brought about into being through science rather than like the ones from the Bible. DRAGON called itself Aiwass. By merely appearing in this world using AIM fields as a medium, a terrible burden was placed on Last Order. A mental strain. Aiwass told Accelerator that if he wanted to save the girl, to take her to Russia. Something he needed for that was there. Something related to "a different set of laws."

Accelerator snuck her out of his guardian's apartment and set off to sneak into Russia, where a war was about to take place.

This angered the higher-ups. Accelerator was a dangerous esper, a person of mass destruction, a scientific resource, and he had taken off with the Misaka Network's command tower. Sure, she was now considered defective and approaching obsolete. It seemed that the entire network was in the process of an upgrade. The Third Season/Third Production Plan was in the workings. Still was a bad move.

And now we get to Misaka WORST herself. Thank you for being patient. :Db

It is unknown when precisely Misaka WORST was created, only that she is less than one chronological year old and was made after Last Order. She was born in a lab over the course of a couple weeks. Growth accelerants were used until her body developed to the point of high school age, or roughly 16. A special machine called Testament was used to educate her and form her personality. Such things normally occur during the formative years in naturally grown children. However, like with the other clones it was necessary to prepare her as quickly as possible. Her brain was specially modified so that she could easily perceive and express negative emotions, particularly those within the Misaka Network. Her role was that of a psychological weapon, intended to be used against Accelerator. She had no other purpose aside from her orders to kill Last Order, which count as a way to traumatize Accelerator anyway.

October 30th, Misaka WORST was transported to the snowy plains of Russia. Most likely it took Academy City a while to locate him through the use of spies and other methods. Other factors may have also been involved in the delay. Upon being deployed, Misaka Worst showed up via hang glider just as he finished taking out a group of magicians. It was time to fulfill her role of eliminating him, and then die.

Misaka WORST managed to mentally corner Accelerator for a good while. His change of heart about the clones, especially Last Order, prevented him from being able to attack her at first. She wore him down by explaining that the Sisters did hold malice and hatred toward him. They simply weren't able to recognize it due to their incompletely developed and suppressed emotions. Even Last Order's feelings for him were false. The girl would eventually grow to resent and hate him once she got older and began to understand. After all, he had trampled on "Misaka's" human rights over ten thousand times. As for Misaka WORST herself, she had only been born for the sake of this one battle to take him out. Had he not run off with Last Order, she wouldn't have been sent after him on a suicide mission. Even were she to survive against him, she would be of no more use to the researchers. She had every right to revenge here. His decision to protect the clones in atonement was only his own arrogance if he thought it would ever be enough to compensate for his transgressions. And so her spiteful words continued, to much effect. They were enough to prompt him into allowing all her physical attacks—nails fired via electromagnetism and lots of kicking—to go through.

Only once WORST proclaimed her intention to kill Last Order did Accelerator finally lose his mind. Caught between protecting Last Order and keeping from killing another clone, even her, he snapped and began fighting back. He broke her arm, threw her to the ground and beat her more brutally than any of the clones he had killed before. Her face was swollen. Parts of her body were split open and bleeding. WORST took this opportunity to detonate the selectors in her body, including ones in her neck. She had failed to eliminate him; the last she could do was spitefully crack out, "This is your fault." WORST's consciousness dimmed after this, although she momentarily regained some foggy lucidity a little while later only to see that she hadn't bled to death. Accelerator had gone mad with suicidal insanity. Black wings were jetting outward from his back and explosively radiating everywhere. Cracks surrounded both espers and stretched further than she could see. Realizing what a trigger she had pulled, she began to tremble uncontrollably.

She must have passed out soon after; the next time she awoke she found herself in a field hospital in the Elizalina Alliance of Independent Nations, being treated for her injuries. Accelerator dropped by her room. He asked her to help him interrogate some professional spies. It took him quite a bit of convincing before she agreed. To the higher-ups she was a disposable unit. Her hatred toward Accelerator, he accepted that, but she couldn't possibly have anything like undying devotion till death to the ones who created her and the clones and used them all like chess pieces no regard for the fact that they were living people with feelings. She had just as much right to get back at them. Work with him, analyze how he used his abilities, strive toward making herself irreplaceable - she could have a future and a goal to work towards. The ride along the way could very well prove entertaining given her malicious disposition.

Despite deciding that following the path he suggested suited her tastes, that sure didn't keep her from bursting into laughter to the point of stomach pain. Not once, but twice. First when he apologized for going along with the higher-ups' manipulation and hurting her. He needed to be a proper object of hate; the meek look on his face messed with her reason for existence. Second when he acted all serious about the two of them fighting back against the city. His face just looked so stupid. Ain't she a charmer? :Db

They shook on the agreement and went off to prepare for mentally torturing one of the spies Accelerator had sniffed out for information. And she had a blast. It was only too bad that the spy broke down more easily than she expected.

The remainder of Misaka WORST's role in Russia was to aid Accelerator and Last Order once they left the Alliance. Accelerator was after an angel that was drawn to some magical parchments he had picked up earlier, so WORST looked after the girl while he did his thing. She then helped him locate some song data that Accelerator needed in order to save Last Order. While she could not go inside the girl's head, she found it elsewhere in the network. Accelerator used the song data plus special parameters he gleaned from both the parchments and some vectors he had experienced when facing Aiwass. He then proceeded to sing. The song turned him into a bloody wreck due to his being an esper trying to use magic; nonetheless, Last Order was healed. He left the girl in WORST's hands at that point, telling her to protect the brat from everyone. There was one more thing he had to take care of. Wings split out of his back. After a quick exchange between him and Last Order, he disappeared into the sky.

Last Order and Misaka WORST were retrieved at some point after this, and taken back to Academy City. Most likely, WORST's fate was so fortunate only because Accelerator threatened the city's higher-ups to release everyone who was being kept bound in the Dark Side and to freeze the Third Season. After this she followed Accelerator to his guardian Yomikawa's apartment to live with them and Last Order.

Misaka WORST | Toaru Majutsu no Index 2/3

[personal profile] inthetatras 2013-08-16 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The peace was to be short-lived. Only days later, some people who had been released from the city's Dark Side unleashed a plot that would force Accelerator and Hamazura Shiage, another powerless Level Zero that the city considered dangerous due to a number of factors, to join forces to protect a single target they both had connections with. This joining of forces was intended to make the higher-ups target them for elimination. Misaka WORST factored into the equation by being with Accelerator on a shopping trip when Bad Shit started cropping up. She casually allowed him to order her around as he worked on taking care of this Dark Side resurgence, assisting in infiltration and suppression as needed. Getting involved in this sort of dangerous situation was thrilling and suited her.

Later that night everything had been resolved to the best of the ability of everyone involved. WORST accompanied Last Order and Accelerator home after the latter had finished up a long meeting at Touma's dorm. A few days later, WORST, Accelerator, and many others headed off to Hawaii. There lurked a new enemy that cropped up as a result of the war between Russia and Academy City. Leivinia Birdway, a cabal leader who had rescued Touma from the ocean at the end of the war, had organized this trip to seek them out. Accelerator felt compelled to go; he dragged WORST along. To summarize the trip as quickly as possible, Misaka WORST spent her time going along with whatever, wherever she was needed. Frequently this meant keeping an eye on Kuroyoru Umidori, a cyborg esper from the Dark May Project who had started the Dark Side Revival commotion earlier that month. Umidori was dragged along on this trip mostly unwillingly, and WORST, who had taken a liking to the girl who gave amusing reactions and had some of Accelerator's thought patterns implanted in her, kept her in line by messing with her circuitry. Also of note during the Hawaii trip, Misaka WORST helped out with taking out The Trigger, a set of mechanisms that could control the flow of volcanic eruptions, and jamming the wireless signals in a shopping mall where an enemy magician was lurking.

Previous Game History: Misaka WORST arrived in The Facility in September 2012. It did not take her long to learn that Accelerator, three other Misaka clones, and the original Misaka Mikoto were already there. Likewise, she also learned that everyone on board the Alpha Omega space station, which housed the unnamed torture facility where everyone was held captive, was a clone. They were all clones of their original selves, brought from any number of universes, timelines, and whathaveyou. The subjects had long since rebelled against their captors, the Consortium, and now had complete control over the entire station except for the presence of Val, a sadistic AI that they could not get rid of because she kept the space station running as they headed toward the nearest habitable planet. If they wanted to reach it, they were stuck with her and the horrible experiments that she inflicted on them weekly. WORST was able to verify much of the situation based on the memories of the other clones in the Network. This gav her an easier time of quickly accepting these difficult truths for what they were. She was no longer the Misaka WORST from her original world, who had been cloned for military purposes and "rescued" by Accelerator to some degree. She was now a clone of the original WORST, with all her memories. Her fate would be determined by whether she could survive the upcoming horrible experiments that were subjected upon everyone, and survive them long enough to reach the habitable planet calculated to be within reach a good ten months from then. If she could stay alive. Death was not completely permanent unless the body was too damaged for the med staff to bring the person back to life, so the only permanent deaths were the ones listed as 'terminated' at the end of the weekly observations list. Regardless of their condition before the weekly reset, even if they were alive and kicking sleeping healthy, the bodies of the 'terminated' were thrown in the incinerator. More often than not, those who were terminated would not return with new clone bodies. They were gone for good.

It was a horrible place to be stuck for the rest of her life, and she could be terminated at any time, for no rhyme or reason. The goals that the original WORST had wanted to pursue back home were no longer of any value. They were unattainable. This was hardly enough to break her; no, it would take a lot to do that. In fact, the presence of the other Misakas and Accelerator stuck here were enough to make WORST look at the situation more positively. She would use the situation to her advantage. While making Accelerator's life suck and watching him suffer, both from being experimented on and from seeing the Misakas he'd dedicated his life to protecting suffer, she'd do whatever she could to survive. Her original goal of becoming irreplaceable to the Board of Directors in Academy City was now pointless. Instead, she chose to make an effort to make herself seem valuable to Val, the AI whose whims likely decided who was terminated and who was not. Val may have been the one continuing the experiments, something worthy of much resentment, but there were rules to surviving in this place. WORST would mind it a little less if she got to see Accelerator go through horrible things.

The first thing she did was start gathering intel. Accelerator had some dangerous people as enemies, people who hated Accelerator, people that piqued WORST's curiosity and made her want to either befriend them or merely use them. All it'd take to piss off Accelerator was associate with Jack Noir or Kakine Teitoku. How could she resist? She also learned that she was not the first Misaka WORST to have ever been in the facility. A previous one had shown up nearly a year earlier, but was terminated after only a few weeks. That WORST had had very little presence on the in-game network, and same for within the public memories in the Misaka Network. She could find almost nothing about that WORST.

One of the few things she had found was a video post of hysterical denial Accelerator had made shortly after that WORST's termination. This was back before the subjects had discovered concrete proof that not only were they really clones, but that the terminated really did wind up in the incinerator. Before that proof surfaced, many subjects kept to the hopeful if unlikely possibility that people didn't die when they were terminated, that maybe they got to go home. This was why Accelerator had acted as he had in that video; stunned and hysterical and proclaiming he was "fine" with her being terminated. Both 9982 and 10032 had openly shown him disapproval of his reaction, but left the matter alone quickly. This was enough to make WORST not quite able to enjoy seeing how badly the previous WORST's termination had affected him. It made her question how far this Accelerator had become distanced from the Accelerator from the events of that fateful day at the end of the war. That day had been less than two weeks ago for her. She didn't know what all he had gone through in this torture facility, but even knowing that back when this happened they hadn't known for sure that the terminated were dead for good, she didn't want to just lie back and excuse him for that. She felt that had it been any other Sister, their death would have received a better treatment.

This sparked a months-long grudge that WORST allowed to burble slowly within her while she observed how he dealt with the Sisters' suffering. She associated with Jack and Kakine and deliberately spoke with them despite being told not to, often revealing information about Accelerator that he wouldn't want her telling them. Some of these conversations were public, while others were deliberately private with a lousy security filter. She had wanted to see how long it would take for him to notice and say anything. To see how much he really was monitoring her. She did share an apartment with him, making it relatively easy for him to keep an eye on her, but that was mostly because the day she'd arrived she had provoked him into asking her to stay there, implying that if he didn't, she'd go find someone dangerous to live with that he didn't approve of.

Not long after began the Misaka deaths. While she had no involvement in causing any of them, it seemed as though Misaka WORST's arrival was a harbinger of a string of Misaka deaths, some temporary and others not. Only a few weeks later WORST arrived, Last Order was terminated after succumbing to clone sickness. That same week Misaka 10032 was temporarily murdered by an unknown person. Some while later Misaka Mikoto was terminated. Then 9982 was terminated. Then 9982 came back. Mikoto also returned for a brief week, but not as a subject. 9982's wish to see Mikoto again was enough to bring Mikoto back during a week where wishes were granted, but would slowly go wrong. Mikoto died at the end of the week. Eventually, 10032 also was terminated. It seemed like on the average one Misaka would die a month, if you counted Mikoto.

During all of these deaths, much sadness and depression befell the Misakas and Accelerator in varying degrees. With the exception of Last Order, WORST is the only Misaka clone capable of crying to express her sadness, and she is particularly susceptible to becoming overwhelmed by the other clones' negative emotions. While she did not particularly care for the other Sisters, she still cried over their deaths because Kamijou Touma had taught 10032 and thus the Misaka Network as a whole that their lives held value and someone would shed tears if they died. At the same time, over time WORST continued to feel that if she were to die or be terminated, there would be no one to shed tears for her. The others couldn't, Mikoto was gone, and her opinion of Accelerator was that he had treated all of the others' deaths in a befitting manner, but that he would still treat her hypothetical death differently from the others. Her grudge kept her in a long-running struggle with evidence to the contrary. She eventually confronted him when he caught her speaking to Kakine yet again, a confrontation that resolved some of the tension between them. It didn't fix all that much, but at least Accelerator was now aware of why she had been so harsh on him during her few months there. Things could only get better, right?

During her stay WORST took advantage of any opportunity to prove herself valuable to Val, be it by suggesting ideas for future experiments, or helping hack into Val's corrupted code and isolate and delete it. Her efforts in the latter endeavor earned her a pet kitten, a personal gift from Val by WORST's request. WORST also stuck to her troublemaking interests; just a few of her more notable accomplishments were broadcasting mocking "nature documentaries" about Accelerator against his wishes, and being better at provoking people than making friends.

Due to damage to the space station and Val, the subjects wound up crash landing on a different planet than the one intended at the end of March 2013. There, the survivors endeavored to make a new life and do their best to survive.

Personality: Misaka WORST is, in her own words, a collection of the malice in the Misaka Network. She was made to easily tap into the Sisters' negative emotions and express them as she saw fit. The reason why is simple. WORST was originally created as a psychological weapon to be used against Accelerator, the Number One ranked Level Five. She was deployed because he left Academy City with the sick Last Order who had been overburdened due to Aiwass's appearance. WORST was intended to be a disposable unit. Should she fail to eliminate Accelerator, she would commit suicide with the intention of sending him over the edge.

WORST tells him during their first encounter that if not for him, she would not have been born. Because of his actions, she was born into a place where by the time she learned how to say, "It hurts, help Misaka," it was already too late. That there would never have been a future for her. It was all his fault. Even when he finally snapped and brutally beat her half to death, WORST only lay there in the snow, set the selectors in her body to explode, and smiled up at him with one more spiteful comment blaming him for her attempted suicide. Imagine her surprise when he turned around and saved her life.

Since then, Misaka WORST has somewhat amended her life view. Previously she was resigned to her fate as an expendable lab rat to be used at the whim of Academy City's Board of Directors, hoping to use this one chance to exact her revenge on Accelerator or die trying. Now she aims to become someone whose value the higher-ups can't possibly ignore. Becoming such a person will most likely entail gaining something the other Misakas do not. An ability. Something to make her as irreplaceable as the original Level Five from whose cells she was cloned. This is one of the primary reasons she stays with Accelerator, who planted the idea in her head. By watching how he fights with his ability, maybe she could learn something. His attack thought patterns had previously been used in an experiment to enhance the personal realities of other espers with some degree of success. WORST's knowledge of this and the thought that things would be more entertaining at his side made the idea palatable enough incentive.

WORST's personality is influenced by the Network's emotional whims to a large degree. There's the obvious fact that she easily taps into and displays anger, hatred, spite, jealousy, resentment, etc. All these negative aspects are far more subdued in the other Sisters, whereas they surface in WORST in a concentrated form. This nature of hers is something she values as part of her identity. While her opinions may clash with those of the other Sisters should they converse, these negative emotions don't come completely out of nowhere. NT6 shows Misaka 10032 calling WORST a loner and a black-hearted monster for suggesting something that pissed her off; the narrative follows up that exchange with the following: "though, since they were both existences controlled by the single large will of the Misaka Network, that opinion had technically once existed within Misaka Imouto as well."

Misaka WORST | Toaru Majutsu no Index 3/3

[personal profile] inthetatras 2013-08-16 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
She enjoys being a spiteful, teasing prankster, tricking people, making others uncomfortable, and just in general being provocative. Her jokes and comments can often be crude. She dislike the clean-cut goodie two-shoes type and much prefers dark people with nasty looks in their eyes. She doesn't hesitate to use words that intentionally bring the possibility of danger onto herself, although these days she knows to be wary of triggers that may not be worth pulling. She enjoys the freedom of the nightlife and comments in NT6 on making "lame acquaintances" and making them drive her around and do errands, while having no actual friends yet (at which point she playfully harasses the WORST-hating Kuroyoru to be her friend, and not for the first time). She will readily take the option of "going where more blood will be spilt" i.e. the more dangerous route if she anticipates it will be more exciting. While she is shown to enjoy trolling a number of people from her original to Last Order to a cyborg esper named Kuroyoru Umidori, her favorite target has to be Accelerator, at whom the grand majority of the Sisters' negative emotions have reason to be directed. She loves pissing him off and shooting innuendo in his general direction.

She comments on losing 90% of her will to fight when Accelerator is not nearby. Makes enough sense. But then when meeting the Sisters' personal savior Kamijou Touma for the first time, WORST has the most conflicted feelings about him and hides behind Accelerator: "Misaka has a feeling that guy is dangerous… He seems like he would freely act for the sake of all Misakas, but that kind of action is like denying the value of this Misaka unit's existence, as she is a collection of the malice within the network…"

This is not the end of the complexity within her. WORST has a similar taste in cute things as the other clones. However, she hates admitting to it due to the embarrassment factor. It's naive and childish; don't treat her like the other clones regarding such matters. Yet when she provoked Accelerator badly enough that he put a handgun muzzle up against her face, she chastised him and demanded the same treatment as the other clones. She may have been joking there to some degree. We're unsure. Also of note, the clones' desires may give her strange ideas: "Let's go buy some sweets and then eat them right away. Misaka has heard that that is the foundation of being bad." It doesn't help that the majority of her life experience was in a lab environment; most of what she learned was either written directly into her brain, passed on to her through the network, or discovered on the internet. A lack of common sense is going to happen.

Last of all, exceptionally strong emotional wavelengths, which are most likely to come from Last Order, may overwhelm WORST's mind like an annoying transmission she can't block. If it proves too hard to ignore, the best way to alleviate it is to satisfy the emotional craving. Last Order envies Accelerator's freedom to go outside on a shopping trip? WORST shoves the little girl out of the way and pesters him to let her come with despite having no personal desire to do so. Last Order suspects that she has been replaced in Accelerator's heart? Both of them seek him out and perform an "infidelity investigation." And so forth.

Like the other clones, Misaka WORST speaks usually in third person, referring to herself as Misaka most but not all of the time. The nice thing is that her speech is much less mechanical, and she doesn't narrate her own actions afterward. It's mostly just how she refers to herself that seems weird. On rare occasion (read: three instances out of six novels so far) she may end sentences in a star.

In-game, the environment and the friction between her and Accelerator and the other clones encouraged her to backslide to some degree. Her harsher sides came out more, she had difficulty dealing with her identity crisis and loss of original goals, she developed a stronger wish for equal treatment that often surfaces as jealousy and makes her actions more erratic and self-endangering, and she showed more playful morbidity than the later novels she appears in tends to display. She has, however, become marginally more responsible, even though her motivation in taking charge with saving Val was extremely selfish.

Abilities/Powers: Misaka WORST is a scientifically engineered esper as well as a clone of the Number Three ranked Level Five esper Misaka Mikoto. Her base ability is Electromastery. Her specs pale in comparison to Mikoto's. That said, she can still manage a maximum output of two hundred million volts, compared to Mikoto's one billion volts. This places her at a respectable Level Four (one-person tactical force).

Let's do the elaboration on this in bullet points:

* Generates and controls electricity with a great deal of precision. Examples shown in canon include firing off lightning spears, shooting nails via electromagnetism at the speed of sound, detonating the air to move quickly or soften her landing, pulling herself long distances quickly via electromagnetism (used to escape an erupting volcano), writing files directly onto mobile devices, controlling cyborgs via their circuitry, and jamming all the wireless signals in a shopping mall (she had Mikoto's help with that one). This should not be considered exhaustive. While WORST is never shown doing electronic hacking, Mikoto is shown to have quite the talent for it. Their difference in specs is only 1/5. Even without the aid of the network WORST would be pretty good at it.

* Passively generates her own magnetic field. It is weak enough that humans and larger animals won't notice, not so much with smaller animals like cats and dogs. They generally find all Misakas, including the original, to be uncomfortable to be around.

* Access to the Misaka Network. The Misaka Network is a giant network stored in the electromagnetic brainwaves connecting all the Sisters, i.e. a group of roughly ten thousand Misaka clones. WORST has the same access privileges as the normal clones. The big difference is that she is immune to interference from Last Order, the Command Tower of the Network, due to metal implants designed for that purpose. This also means WORST's memories are only added to the collective memory by her choice; normally that happens automatically for the Sisters due to how the Network is setup, although they are also capable of withholding information. The Network is generally used for quasi-telepathic communication, external storage of all Sisters' memories (i.e. collective memory), parallel calculations for analysis, and so on. Due to WORST's nature and her opinions—for example, feeling that backing up one's memories on the Network is careless—she is usually not inclined to share her experiences with the others without a good reason. That shit's staying in her head.

* Negative empathy. WORST's brain was modified so that she could easily perceive and express the negative emotions within the Network. It is something outside her control, and which she cannot shut off. This influences her behavior quite a bit. See the Personality section.

As for abilities not related to being an esper, WORST is proficient with firearms, from handguns to sub-machine guns.

Items/Weapons: 1) Kuroyoru's white hoodie that she kept as a memento.
2) A bag of hard candy.
3) A bottle of homemade alcohol that Tony Stark made for her.

Sample Entry Two: (sample used at [community profile] a_facility)

Misaka WORST stood in front of a mirror in the med bay with some gauze and medical tape, unmindful of her current state of dress. This worked better for her, actually. She had learned some very... interesting things while poking around the networks here. There was a limited, somehow isolated version of the Misaka Network, with several units somewhere in this station. 'That person' was also here; the core for his calculations showed activity. As for the other network, it was a separate network for communication throughout the station. What had piqued Misaka WORST's interest was a certain informational text file regarding the station. More specifically, certain details it mentioned. People brought here didn't necessarily all come from the same point on their timeline.

Upon learning that, she had skimmed the Misaka memory files and come away with some modicum of verification. Misaka WORST had been skeptical of such a ludicrous claim, but at the very least it could explain the influx of new negative emotions that began throbbing through her from the moment she awoke. The blend had a different feel from what she remembered prior to waking up. A different taste. That was when WORST found herself struck with an amusing idea. What if she pretended to be from an earlier point in time? That would certainly shake 'him' up, if pulled off successfully. Even if it didn't work, it would annoy him and possibly cause some havoc depending on who in the station paid attention to the message she intended to post.

That was why now she was working on finishing her setup. Her medical gown would stay. Changing into the aodai right now would give things away instantly. Besides, it would always be a bit of a hassle to change into as long as the cast remained on her arm. The only other important element was replicating the bandage on her neck. That's what the gauze and tape were for. WORST turned her head so that she was looking at the side of her face in the mirror. Her scars were visible. Hmmm. As long as it looked remotely similar it ought to pass the test and he wouldn't notice until it was too late.

She held up the gauze and placed it on her neck, carefully strapping the tape across it to hold it in place.
