APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN!
The next processing date is Friday 11th October

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every two weeks, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. If you wish to request a specific apartment, please do so in the relevant part of the application. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Every attempt will be made to place a character in their chosen apartments, though this may not always be possible depending on the slots available.

Applications are open constantly, but are only processed every other Friday at 7PM EST. The Saturday following acceptance, an IC mingle log will be posted for characters to be introduced to the game.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. Canon: Horimiya
Canon Point: end of Ch. 16 ( He makes no appearance in Ch. 17)
Background/History:
the canon
series summary
There's not much else to say about the series aside from that, especially where Toru is concerned. Little is known about his background except that he was a classmate of some of the other main characters in elementary and middle school. At first he seems like an antagonist as he sees Miyamura as a rival for Hori. But he's rejected and it turns out he's just a big friendly loser. He becomes close friends with Miyamura and Hori, even though the latter keeps him at a distance much to his dismay. Most recently, he's started to take notice of another of the characters named Sakura. She seems to have a crush on him but he's still a little too wrapped up in Hori to notice. Since he doesn't actively pursue Hori (and knows that there's something going on with her and Miyamura), it's safe to say that something may come of this development!
Previous Game History: N/A
Personality:
Toru is fairly easy to figure out and perhaps that's just the curse of being a side character in a romcom manga. He is tall, handsome, and pretty popular, although personally his sights are only set on one girl. Because she's rather popular herself (and the title character of the manga), you would think he wouldn't be surprised when he gets rejected by her. However it seems that that moment shatters his entire world and he's forced to accept his place as the loser best friend instead.

Generally Toru is actually really nice even if he can come off as a little obnoxious. He's always getting made fun of by his former classmates and childhood friends but he doesn't seem to mind since he can just dish it right back. He can be a bit dramatic too, showing huge ups and downs. For example when Miyamura is sick in bed and keeps trying to get up, Toru threatens not to be his friend anymore if he tries again (this tactic works). Also when he's rejected by Hori and Miyamura unwittingly says something about it, he runs away crying, complete with tears and shoujo sparkles.

He isn't the best of students, as it's shown he and Miyamura both get embarrassingly low scores on their papers. What's worse is that while Miyamura is at least good at sports, Toru gets pretty average scores there as well. In a way, it's good for the two of them because it strengthens their strange bond. Once, in order to protect Miyamura's tattoo secret, Toru tells the others that Miyamura's on his period. For some reason, everyone buys it. It may seem silly or even stupid, but it goes to show how quickly the two boys become close friends. They're often exchanging rude comments at one another but in the end, Toru has no intentions of betraying Miyamura's secret and actually becomes very concerned with his situation. Not out of jealousy, but as a genuine friend. The first time he and Miyamura actually fight, it's because of this concern. Perhaps Toru merely took it too far, which he is prone to doing.

Despite his silly, teasing attitude, Toru is helpful and kind. He looks out for Hori and Miyamura and does not genuinely seem to be poorly affected by his rejection (despite how he acts). Yes it hurt but he knows it's not the end for him. He will also lend a hand naturally if the situation calls for it, such as the first moment he really has with Sakura, where she drops papers everywhere and he comes to her aid without question.

He may be a device for comic relief but he is a strong character in his own right, with goals and ambitions and maybe even a future romance in the works. Toru is the token friend that is relatable and endearing. He's the type of friend anyone would want at their side, whether they realize it immediately or not.

Abilities/Powers: Horimiya is a slice-of-life shoujo romance manga. Therefore Toru is just an average human being. Actually he's a little below average, as his grades aren't that good and he doesn't even seem to be good at sports. Poor guy ...

Items/Weapons: His cellphone and his clothes only. He doesn't have anything else of interest...

Sample Entry: a thread! mildly nsfw but nothing too bad, especially in the first half.

Sample Entry Two:
Of course, it's pretty normal for Toru to be waking up in a bed via alarm. He's a high school student, right? Except he didn't even really remember going to bed. Weren't they just at school? He groaned, eyes blinking open groggily. Really he only got a fuzzy view of the dark room and then yawned, turning over on one side to attempt to gain back the sleep he felt had been rudely taken from him.

Then it hit him. That the room was dark was no surprise, but he was pretty sure he saw ... lumps! Lumps of people! He didn't share a room with anyone! With a start, he shot up in bed, tossing the cover down and rubbing his eyes quickly. It was no mistake, there was a bunch of random guys in beds just like him! This was messed up. Too messed up to be something like a surprise school trip or anything like that. Still, the idea of familiarity keeps anyone calm, right? He decided that he may as well test the waters ... see if he was truly alone in what may be an elaborate and perverse kidnapping scheme.

"Miyamura ..." He whispered quietly, peering out into the room. He wasn't sure if any of the others were really awake yet. "Miyamura!!" A little louder. There's still no answer. He wouldn't be messing with Toru right? With a sigh, he drops his arms against the bed, barely brushing against the screen of his cellphone. Might as well try to text and see if anyone replied ...
But there's no signal. Things just turned about ten times more horror film and that's about ten times too much for him.

Character Name: Sara Mudou
Canon: Angel Sanctuary
Canon Point: Postcanon
Background/History: Here.

Personality: Sara is, in many ways, similar to her older brother Setsuna — like him, she is outspoken, headstrong, and quick-tempered. Sara never holds back anything she's feeling without a very compelling reason and is always quick to make her opinion known. It doesn't matter if she's talking to someone she should be afraid of. Sara doesn't let the potential consequences stop her from making her voice heard when she needs to. She's willing to defy her mother and society to be with Setsuna; she stands up to thugs when she has to; and she's willing to defy angels as a powerless human girl. Her bravery isn't the obvious kind that comes from killing monsters or fighting battles, but she is a brave person.

However, Sara has another side to herself as well, one that is a bit less like her beloved brother. Unlike Setsuna, who externalizes everything, Sara has a quiet, thoughtful part of her personality. She can be quite sentimental and sometimes withdraws her into her own thoughts. When Sara decides on a course of action, she sticks to it come hell or high water, and nobody can sway her from her chosen path. However, she doesn't always decide on a chosen path right away, and when she deliberates between options, she can become very conflicted and be easily led. She is somewhat naive at the beginning of the series, and although this becomes less true as the series progresses and she becomes more aware of how the world works, Sara still wants to believe the best in most people.

That doesn't stop her from having a scheming, manipulative side as well. This is only shows up in times of duress. Sara is generally an honest, sincere person on a day to day level. However, when confronted with mounting obstacles or dangerous situations, Sara's mind is all she has. She's a very observant person who notices everything that happens around her, including details that other people might miss; where she sometimes fails is in interpreting or processing that information, as sometimes her naivety gets in the way of a thorough understanding of something, or she shuts down out of fear. It is worth noting that both of those things happen less and less as the series progresses, until her mindrape by Sandalphon. She is quick-thinking, twice coming up with spur of the moment plans when she felt her life or Setsuna's was at risk. Sara is as pro-active as she can be given the circumstances. She can be slightly foolhardy or brash at times, but generally has a good head on her shoulders.

The other facet of Sara is that she's a very guilt-ridden person, although it doesn't show. While she seems more confident of the relationship between Setsuna and herself at first glance, and in some ways is more confident, the truth is that Sara simply hides her doubts better, while Setsuna lays his out in the open. Sara feels no shame or guilt over the fact that her relationship is an incestuous one, but she feels a lot of personal guilt over her selfishness and jealousy towards Setsuna, as well as her perceived weakness and uselessness. She feels unable to help, and it eats at her. She also feels very selfish at times. Sara doesn't consider herself a good person, and feels like she causes pain for others. This causes her a lot of mental distress.

Abilities/Powers: Sara's abilities, inasmuch as they exist, are weird and Kaori Yuki kind of contradicts herself about them. But I'll do my best to explain them coherently and consistently!

Sara's soul is the elemental angel Gabriel, put into a human body after Gabriel was rendered unconscious by Sevotharte, the dictatorial Prime Minister of Heaven. At one point canon seems to suggest this isn't the case after all, but they go back on that and say it is, so I'm running with it. In her own body, Sara seems to be mostly a normal powerless girl, although she does show faint inklings of her soul's real nature.

Water around her sometimes reacts to her subconscious emotions or tries to protect her, although it's worth noting this isn't something Sara consciously controls or has deliberate influence over. Sara seems to have some faint aura-reading ability, shown in the form of an uncanny ability to locate others even when she has nothing to go on. Sara doesn't know this is what she's doing, though. She just gets "feelings." To an extent, she seems able to see or sense things that a normal human being shouldn't be able to. Her abilities in this seem much less developed than most of the other characters', but they are present.

Because of their connection, Sara temporarily inhabits Gabriel's body after her death on Assiah. While in Gabriel's body, she throws a blast of astral energy at someone, knocking him across the room. She also makes use of Gabriel's energy transfer ability, in which she draws energy from the moisture or water around her (somehow) to help bolster someone else's powers or give them energy. Raphael says that Sara shouldn't have been able to access those powers, but her strong will made it possible.

Sara's willpower is an ability in and of its own. It allows her to do things that should be physically impossible. She can't warp reality itself or control others, but she can do things like remain standing even she, by all rights, should have dropped dead, or be miraculously immune to someone else's powers simply because she doesn't want to be affected by them.

Speaking of which! The last relevant part of this section is Sandalphon! Sara is possessed by Sandalphon but eventually casts him out, which she shouldn't have been able to do as a normal human. Considering that Sandalphon was a very powerful being, I think that Sara, after casting him out, would be able to resist most types of mind control. Attempts to control her body or her consciousness won't fail to connect, but they will only take hold for a few seconds before they're cast out or shrugged off.

Tl;dr - Sara is more than human, but not in an obvious, flashy way, and none of her "powers" are very strong or well-developed. 90% of the time, she's functionally identical to a normal human being, except that she's intuitive to a degree that can't be explained by normal means. Once in a while, during times of extreme stress or if given a truly amazing incentive, she will do things that should by all rights be impossible for her, which may include accessing Gabriel's powers to help someone else or defend against an attacker. But on a day to day basis when nothing important is happening, you can't tell she's anything but a totally normal teenage girl.

There's also some kind of confusing stuff with her potentially being a power block for Setsuna or spying on Setsuna/Alexiel for Heaven by existing (?), but then they also imply Setsuna's power is blocked by the earrings Kira gave him so who knows, honestly. Even if it were the case, Setsuna's powers are awakened when Sara dies for him, so it doesn't apply at her current canonpoint anyway!

Items/Weapons: Nothing but the clothes she's wearing.

Sample Entry: Here.

Sample Entry Two: Sara rocketed to Earth so quickly she didn't have time to process it while it was happening. She had been clinging desperately to Setsuna for all she was worth, when suddenly she felt herself falling only to land, uninjured, on a busy Tokyo sidewalk. She couldn't feel the pavement beneath her. She couldn't feel anything except her own hollow, trembling limbs.

The summer sun was hot against her skin but it didn't seem to penetrate. Nothing felt real at all, and yet Setsuna's absence felt too painful real, as if a piece of herself had been brutally ripped away from her. There was a hole in her chest.

She scrambled to her feet but, for all its franticness, the action felt automatic. Guilt weighed down on her. She remembered now; she remembered why he'd left. Because she was a bad person. Because she had hurt him. Hurt everyone. Raphael, Kurai, the nameless soldiers and maids she'd massacred while under Sandalphon's control — their faces all flashed in front of her and she couldn't stop seeing them.

She had to find Setsuna again. She had to pull him back to her. Somehow. She didn't know how, but she felt the hole inside would swallow her from the inside out if she didn't. She pushed through the crowds of people, realizing dimly that they had come so close to dying and not known it. She felt a sudden deep, bitty envy for all of them. Their lives had not been changed irrevocably; they never knew the danger they were in.

But Sara's life would never be the same.

Character Name: Cross Blanchard
Background/History: At least three paragraphs, please. Try to focus on events in the world history that have had an impact on the character.World info
Cross's world on the surface is very average in the sense that everyday life consists of getting up and going to work or school. But beneath the surface lies more wonder and magic than one would expect. His family was a part of the magical world. In his world people are born to magical bloodlines. In some cases someone born may only have the potential to use weapons imbued with magical force, while others are capable going passed that and invoking magic without a weapon. Magic works like a muscle in his world. If someone is born only with the ability to wield magical weapons, with enough training and time, they can become capable of using magic themselves. But overtime magical families began to dwindle because there weren’t enough of them to keep the bloodlines going; they had to turn to non-magical beings to continue their line. They found however when they did this the magical line would grow progressively weaker in their children to the point some families couldn’t produce any magical children at all.

They began studying into this to see if there was a way to combat the dying out of magic. In time they managed to find the answer. If a non-magical person was married to one who could use magic, the non-magical person would need to be absorb copious amounts of the mystical force and be infused a small amount of blood from the magical being they would marry; this would not however give the non-magical person the capability to use magic as it’s only given to them so it can pass on into the child. By doing this magical children were more likely to be born into the family but on occasion a child with no magical capabilities would be born.

In Cross’s world the magical part of it hides from the rest of the world. Their reasoning being that non-magical people in the past have been known to use any sort of power stronger than them and cause devastating harm with it. So, instead of trying to help them the magical world stays hidden and keeps to itself. They also don’t take much concern with normal people affairs unless it directly affects them.

The magical world also has it's set of problems. The government of this world is a hierarchy. Before, there use to be a line of kings and queens who had the strongest magic. But, because of the introduction of non-magical people marrying magical ones, the royal family's heirs also started getting weaker potential. So, not wanting to have weak rulers, the council that helped the royal family run the world voted upon a tournament. It would be called the Hierarchy's cup. Winning the tournament meant that you had the strongest magic and therefore would take to the throne. All families could compete and would fight in it in order to take control of the world.

In the non-magical half of the world, technology is the equivalent of what it would be in 30 years or so. Limbs are capable of being replaced with mechanical ones that function just as well as a normal one would (like if an arm was lost and replaced with a mechanical one, it will function just like a regular one.) Computers can even be small enough to be fit into blue tooth like objects and a tinted glass screen can be made into a visor to display information.

Warfare technology has also increased. Technology that could be comparable to Iron man's suit is now standard issue in the military. There are huge armada's of these soldiers in suits that are capable of flight and firing lasers. They are difficult obtain though since they're just military issued.

Society is still the same as it would be right now in 2012, with politics and the like. Kids still go to school, adults still work, people have families. All of what you would expect in normal day life.

The government is a democracy, depending on the country. Since Cross lives in considered North America, it's fairly certain that they elect president's or prime minister's by voting.

The magical and non-magical world exist on something of a shifted plane. To understand it fully, picture a coin. Each world represents a different face of the coin. They exist side by side but can never touch each other. At least, those born in the non-magical world cannot touch the other side. Anyone from the magical world can pass through the barrier into the non-magical, whether they have magical abilities or not. Those with enough training in magic can easily step pass the barrier. But those born with no magic at all can pass through the barrier because of their connection to the non-magical world, simply by not having magic. With these cases, however, the person does it subconsciously and can simply pass back and forth between both worlds (but only if they were born in the magical world first and if they know of the other side.) Similarly, how a non-magical person would pass through into the other side would be if a magic user took them through.

If the barrier was broken, the worlds would collide together and merge together. To compensate for another land becoming part of another, the world would reshape itself to fit both worlds together in an act of self preservation.

Personal History
Cross was born into one of these wealthy, magical families along with his twin brother, Crown. However, Cross was a rare case in which he was born with zero magical ability because his older brother had received all of the magic put into their non-magical mother. Because of this Cross was horribly neglected by his father who would be training Crown in magic and sword play most of the time in order for Crown to win the Hierarchy's cup. Their mother on the other hand seemed to have up and vanished around the time they were three so all they were left with to take care of them was their father and some of the house staff. Since Cross had no magic his father sent him to a non-magical school, while Crown would be trained at home.

Since Cross had interactions with both worlds he got a sense of what both were like. The normal world to him seemed amazing with the people being able to come up with non-magical innovations to solve their problems. He soon began collecting a variety of things (like thrown away televisions, computers) and started to take them apart. In time he learned how these machines worked over the course of his childhood.

When he went to school, his teachers found him to be exceptionally bright. He was able to understand the subjects he took more quickly than the other students. By the age of ten he was taking advanced classes in his school. But, because of his excelling in school it left him with not being able to make many friends. So, he turned to books and comics for the comfort of friendship.

The more he spent in the non-magical world however, he noticed overtime that there was a lot of problems. He believed though that magic could help fix these problems. Cross brought this up to his father and saying that the magical world should do more to help people on the other side as well. His father rebuffed him, telling him to stop wasting time since it didn't matter.

With the magical world Cross was enamored by the thoughts of using magic and all of the interesting and neat things it could do. He started to feel angry towards it when he found out that the magical world didn’t care about the entirety of the world’s problems. In doing so Cross wanted to make it so that both the magical world and the normal world co-exist out in the open. He wanted both worlds to help each other with their problems and to work together for a better future. But, because of how both worlds worked those without power were often not taken seriously or ever seen.

In time, Cross wanted to become a hero in his world so that he could be acknowledged by everyone; so he could help everyone. This was all because in stories he read and heard lands and countries managed to unite under one person who brought them together.

If he could get both worlds to cooperate with one another, he could make a world filled with happiness.

Cross was at horrible disadvantage though. He had no magic and without it he had a problem: How could he make himself stand out in both worlds? Well, the answer came to him when he had walked into a comic book store.

Cross had read comic books and found that there were many normal people who trained themselves to fight back. Cross than began taking martial arts after school and when he went home after his martial arts, Cross had his brother teach him use a sword. Because a physical education class was mandatory at his school, Cross took acrobatics. However, he knew just using a sword, acrobatics and martial arts wouldn’t be enough.

Because of his hobby of taking machines apart and putting them together, Cross began making his own devices to help him fight.

The final thing he needed was a hero suit capable of protecting himself. Well, by convincing his older brother to sneak the funds from their family's wealthy account, Cross could buy the materials needed. So he began to build his suit whenever he could in his school's metal shop by night. How, he managed to get in? He often would hack into the security system to open the windows and keep the alarms from setting off.

When Cross had finally gotten all the things he needed to start his vigilante career, he began to fight crime in the non-magical world. Crown wasn't going to let him go out on his own and decided to come with him. They were going to try and catch a bunch of bank robbers, but their first mission didn't go very well. During it, a chase led into a construction site where Cross badly damaged his right arm in a freak explosion; it had to be amputated afterwards. It was soon after replaced with a mechanical arm. This did not deter him however as he just adjusted his arm for the use of crime fighting. So from then on he continued to do whatever it took to be seen as a hero by both worlds.

Cross Blanchard|Original Character 2/2

[personal profile] hero_of_smiles 2013-03-29 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: Cross is extremely hyperactive. Anytime there is danger or adventure to be had Cross will jump right into it without a second thought. He often puts on a happy face, being very optimistic and cheerful to anyone he meets. Though he's never had many friends, he's very social often wanting to meet new people. But at times he can be overbearing with his attitude since his happy go lucky persona never seems to shut off. At least, not when people are looking.

Cross is not so bright when it comes to love and crushes as they will often go over his head (this could also be said with innuendos and sexual jokes.) It takes a lot for him to notice someone has feelings for him. Cross is perceptive of how people are feeling (whether sad or happy); it’s just love that evades him. Because of his empathetic nature, Cross is very compassionate to those weaker than him or hurting. He will drop everything he’s doing just to comfort someone in need, even if he does not know them.

Cross can be serious; if only when the moment calls for it. He's very protective of his friends and his older brother, often coming to their defence when they need it. Cross is an idealist, as he tries to believe in the best in people. However, his idealism does blind him. He just doesn't understand that there are some people who will never change their ways.

With his super hero obsession, he took major influence from many superhero comics and movies, as well as heroes from literature. He strives to be the heroic figure in a story in real life. So, Cross became very brave, as he’s willing to take on things that could be potentially dangerous or lethal to his well being.

Most of his heroic or happy qualities are just pieces to a mask he uses when with others. Due to the loneliness of growing up without his father talking to him and the kids in his school not often socializing with him, he built the persona of a hero around himself. He saw that people like optimists and those who are happy and outright with how they go about things. By putting this mask on he thought he could garner attention and praise from others. The mask is just that though. A front for someone a lot lonelier, jealous, and depressed.

Cross during his life found himself feeling extremely inferior to others. Being ignored by his father for not having magic, Cross constantly finds himself trying to prove he can be better than those with magic. But, he finds himself wanting to be seen as extremely special and unique, if only for the lack of attention he received growing up. Cross found himself wanting to be like his brother, because of how people would often fuss over Crown. He wanted the love and attention of others like Crown so easily got and with not having it he often feels isolated from others.

He constantly battles with the fear that one day he's going to be totally alone in the world, no one loving him, no one praising him. Just a face in a crowd of people that don't care. He wants to be looked upon with some kind of reverence or attention. Since he lacked so much of it during his childhood he tries very hard for others to like him. Often going to extreme extents to do it, like doing what they ask him to (if it doesn't impede on his morals) or just tries to show off in front of them.

He has a firm belief that magic should only be used to help people. This can lead to one of his nastier qualities. He often gets very upset or angry with a person if he were to find out that they didn’t use said power to help others. This is directly influenced by his how his own world runs, as magic is kept within families with a magical lineage. It can lead him to judge a person very harshly before knowing all the facts of why they wouldn’t use their power to help people.

In actuality it's only because Cross is extremely jealous of others. As said above, he would often scold people or become very harsh if they didn’t use it to help people. His reasoning behind it all is because he often feels shut out or left in the background and by having magic you can stand out. But, it's also a giant motivator for Cross because he wants to try and gain attention through his own merits and abilities.

Cross is a lot more cunning and intelligent than one may think when they first meet him. Sure, he is naive and childish, but he is very resourceful. When he fights, Cross uses whatever he can get his hands on to fight back against his opponents. If he's in a kitchen he can make a makeshift bomb out of the oven. But it extends outside of battle too. He's capable of fixing or making household objects out of nothing but paper clips.

From a young age, Cross has been unimaginably intelligent. He was able to take a computer apart and reassemble it at the age of five. Since that age he found. As he got older he became capable of creating highly advanced devices, some which he uses to fight. With his mechanical finesse, he was capable to rig his mechanical arm with a grappling hook and claws.

Since Cross took an interest in technology and machines at a young age, he has a fanatical obsession in taking things apart. He's capable of appreciating handiwork in handmade machines or tech but with manufactured things he's okay with stripping them down. He wants to see how it works in order to try and duplicate the process later or at the very least try and put it back together again.

Cross is also very stubborn when it comes to his beliefs or ideas. When someone points out the flaws in them he will become very defensive. When this happens, he accuses the other person of being pessimistic or hopeless. The reason he is so stubborn is because his beliefs are the only things he feels like he has control over. So, when someone comes in trying to make him change them (in his opinion), he feels loss of that power.

Because of Cross’s want to be special in some way he takes pride in his own abilities, often subtly emphasizes his skills.

Abilities/Powers: Physical
Cross has no magical capabilities of any form. However, because of this he trains himself through several forms of martial arts, acrobatics and the use of a sword. For his age group he is above average in strength, speed and agility.

Cross is able to take down someone who is bigger than him with the help of his martial arts. How he does so is often hitting pressure points to paralyze and disable his enemy. Because of his acrobatics training, he is very speedy and stealthy, often preferring to attack from the shadows. Cross is capable with a sword having learned fencing from his brother.

With one of the Bluetooth like visors that are often sold in his world, Cross has managed to rig his to do things it shouldn't be able to do. It's capable of recording video and sound, as well as doing a lot complicated math to allow him to gather statistics that would help to fight (like at what angle should he fire his grappling hook or how far away someone is.) It is also able to examine technology (if it is not too advanced) and capable of picking up the details in it. It will give Cross a layout of how the technology works and how to use it. His visor cannot examine technology that could be considered light years ahead of his time, unless, it examines blue prints or plans of the futuristic device first.

For his age he is a capable driver, being able to do complex maneuvers while going at high speeds. Why is he like this? Well from time to time he's stolen the occasional bad guy's motorcycle.

Unknown to Cross however, he is especially resilient to magic. This is because of his birth. Since his brother had taken all of the magic during their birth, Cross was given strong magical resistance. This doesn't mean he's invincible to magic but it will deal less damage to him than it would for someone who doesn't have it. So, for example, someone wanted to set his arm on fire and cause third degree burns with magic? His resistance lessens the damage to a first degree burn. But, this is only if it's magic. If it's through a different means, then he's going to burn like any other human.

Mental
Since he was smart from a young age he's able to create gadgetry. He makes a collection of tools and weapons that he can use to fight (think of Batman’s utility belt.) These can often be bombs, tasers, EMPs, smoke bombs, throwing knives, flash grenades, pepper spray, a mini blow torch, lock picks and a visor that helps him take in statistics around him.

Cross is even smart enough to outfit his mechanical arm with a variety of tools. If he turns the cuff on it 90 degrees he can launch a small grappling hook stored inside the arm. If turned 180 degrees, fingertip blades will extend out; he can’t use both at once though. The tools in the arm wear down though if they aren't taken care of.

Cross also has specially made armor for himself. It’s light enough to allow him to move swiftly but strong enough that it can withstand bullets. It is capable of wearing down and falling apart though, if maintenance isn’t done on it.

Cross is capable and cunning in many situations. If you were to put him in a kitchen, in a minute he could create a makeshift bomb from the stove and a lighter. He takes advantage of what he can get his hands on. Wherever he is, he can find a use for something to fight back with.

Math - Cross is very skilled in mathematics of varying degrees. If he was tested he could possibly be considered near 12th grade to first year of college. His math skills encompass, physics, trig, basic math, geometry, calculus, and algebra.

Reading - Cross has learned to read and knows how to read at the 10th grade level. A basic skill but a necessary one.

Metal work - Cross learned how to make his own weapons and armor having taken shop class. He learned how to craft a light enough armor for his crime fighting to withstand bullets and allow for mobility. He got the plans for his weapons however online, because high schools don't normally teach people how to make weapons. But, he knows how to make a variety of small things to like jewelry boxes and coat racks.

Adapting technology - While not being able to make complex technology from scratch, Cross is capable of making current devices available to him better. With his blue tooth visor the tech was already available to him, he just modified it to allow for different functions. It can calculate complex trig formulas, he expanded the memory on it to allow more information storage, and it can learn how higher grade technology works if it has the plans for the higher tech available.

Computers - Having taken apart computers since a young age and played around on them, Cross understands the workings of them, both inside and out. He is capable of hacking into other computer systems, but, also knows how to put one together. The parts need to be readily available to him for him to actually make a computer better. Knowing how computers work, Cross is capable of reading binary and other such computer languages with it he's able to create computer software too of any different types, like programming his visor to be able to sort out different complex formulas.

Basic chemistry - Cross is capable of doing basic chemistry. What this means is he knows how to make bombs and reactive substances from house hold items or school lab materials. With chemistry he has made a variety of bombs (smoke, explosive, flash) that he uses to fight with.

Pressure points - Cross in his martial arts training has learned about pressure points on a person's body. This means he knows where to strike on a person to temporarily paralyze that person's limb.

Basic first aid - Cross has taken CPR training that's offered at his school. He knows how to preform CPR and what steps have to be followed in order to preform it.

Mechanics - Cross learned how to disassemble one of his spare mechanical arms from his shop class and put it together again. But, he also learned how to add other things to his arm while still making it function properly. He knows how to take a part a variety of house hold objects and knows what parts he can use from them to make other things.

Items/Weapons: His visor, sword and battle armor

Sample Entry Two: Stuck here, in a place where happiness forgot. Cross had been only here for a short while but Haven was beginning to drain at what was left of his happy facade. The constant hunger, death, torture. All of it was slowly breaking away at him his perfect little image. Play the hero, people loved heroes, they admired and looked up to them. That's all he wanted, he didn't need this. He didn't need this depressing place to shatter those remnants of hopeful energy that was still in him. But, why should he feeling bad for himself? A hero never should feel bad for themselves. They should be pitying others who've been in the situation longer. A twinge of guilt sprouted within him. He was doing it again. Thinking of himself selfishly. No one wanted to be friends with a selfish person, no one cared about selfish people. So, Cross couldn't feel bad for himself now. He needed to feel bad for others.

Taking in a breath, he leaned against the wall as he stared up at the ceiling. Right, that's the only reason why he wanted to be a hero. So others would care about his useless life. With that care, people would notice and respect him and here it was no different. Sure, this was a selfish act but he knew he was doing it for the right reasons, wasn't he? Give others hope and of course they'll give it back to you. That's how it worked. All right, he could do this. Cross could remain happy, or, at the very least pretend like he could be to raise other people's spirits. They didn't need more depression here. They needed some hope. And he would give that to them all.

So, placing a falsified grin on his face, Cross tried to present himself with confidence. He could this. Cross could continue trying to play hero in this place. If it meant everyone would feel better for it...and like him for it.

Character Name: Raphael
Canon: Angel Sanctuary
Canon Point: Chapter 89, just before interrupting Sara/Jibril's trial.
Background/History: Prior to Lucifer's rebellion, Raphael was a very ambitious angel, rising in the ranks, and known as one of the purest of all the angels. Right about the time he was promised a promotion to one of the Elemental Angels, however, he walked in on something that tainted all his high ideals for pretty much the rest of his life: one of his fellow workers, Belial, kissing a woman.

In the loveless heaven Raphael hails from, any kind of sexual interest, heterosexual or homosexual, is a mortal sin. Belial accused him of watching them for the sake of his own arousal. Naturally, Raphael denied this, asserting he'd be punished in court for the offense-- and then Belial raped him right there in the office. Belial soon after fell from heaven and became Lucifer's most loyal follower. If that wasn't bad enough, the scandal that erupted in heaven due to that was enormous enough that for literally years afterward no one except Michael would even deign to speak to him. Raphael was shamed, his reputation cemented as a lech through no fault of his own.

Not only that, but he changed. He saw that being a great, pure angel, the way he'd strived to be all his life, really meant nothing-- was a lie. He wasn't untouchable, and now he wasn't even "pure." It didn’t matter what had really happened, everyone except Michael had completely turned their backs on him. While he credits Michael with pulling him out of his despair, being ostracized for so long caused him to see things in a new, embittering light. So from then on he callously focused his attention on his own appetites and lusts to an extreme extent, effectively becoming the person he’d been accused of being.

During the first war in heaven, Raphael acts as a commander in heaven's army, and at the end of the final battle, saves Michael literally from his own flames by walking into the inferno he'd created and talking to him, calming him down and enabling him to stop the fire. Raphael is so badly burned in the aftermath that Michael breaks down, begging him to heal his face, but the act itself, and the fact that he came to help him when no one else would dare, cements their friendship.

After that Raphael continues in much the same vein as before the war, shamelessly lecherous but somehow managing-- likely by a combination of his high-ranking position, the silence of his second-in-command, and the fact that he had no ambition to overthrow Sevotharte (who was busily silencing those against him), heaven's prime minister-- to avoid being actually caught for his sexual indiscretions. This doesn't change until Sara, the forced incarnation of his fellow Elemental angel, Gabriel, literally runs into him. He tries to blackmail her into sleeping with him in exchange for his aid, and she fakes agreement only to attempt to stab him in the back once they climb into bed. Needless to say, that was the start of quite a rocky relationship, but Raphael eventually agrees to continue to help her at the risk of his own life, hiding her from Sevotharte and shrugging off any questions as to why. Raphael is tricked by Katou and Uriel into helping bring Setsuna's body back to life, eventually "agreeing" to do it in exchange for a kiss from Sara.

The current ruler of heaven, Sevotharte, eventually captures Sara and offers Raphael an ultimatum: give Sara a poison that will render her unable to speak at her trial, or Sevotharte will kill Raphael's second-in-command, Barbiel, and extract information about Raphael's various indiscretions from her brain-- enough information to have Raphael executed. His hands basically tied, Raphael gives her the poison, claiming it's a sedative, only to find Barbiel, gun down one of Sevortharte's soldiers, and double back for Sara, healing her throat with a kiss and exposing Sevotharte as a fraud. I am taking him from just before he interrupts the trial.

[personal profile] bedsidemanners 2013-03-29 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: Opportunistic and cynical, Raphael is primarily out for himself and unashamed of it. A symbol of the corruption in heaven, he sleeps around constantly, "playing doctor" with the people he's supposed to be healing, and making a mockery of his holy title as the Archangel of Wind and the greatest healer in heaven. He acts entirely disinterested in the power games and politics of heaven to the point of flippancy; when asked about Alexiel, who fought against the other angels during the second war in heaven and whose reincarnation has returned, all he says is that he remembers her chest/waist/hip measurements, and boredly rattles them off.

His cynicism is showcased in the way he acts towards others, suspicious and constantly assuming they have some kind of selfish reasoning for what they’re doing-- and calling them out on whatever hypocrisy he perceives. He assumes the worst in people in general-- refusing to help save Assiah (Earth) because he thinks humans are basically destructive polluters-- and in people in particular, dismissing Sara’s love for Setsuna as nothing more than a selfish, childish infatuation. But for someone who so easily figures out other's supposed ulterior motives, he's most blind to his own true reasoning for what he does and his own feelings-- for instance, he is genuinely shocked when accused of being afraid of women.

Apart from his womanizing, he's not a natural rebel. Though he has his own opinions on the corrupt theocracy, in the thousands of years since Sevotharte took control, he never sees fit to take a risk and try to change things on his own until those he comes to care about become involved. Only dire circumstances and others' manipulations ever manage to force him into action; left to his own devices, Raphael's outwardly content enough to while away the centuries sleeping with every woman he exchanges more than five words with.

Raphael has a tendency toward grudge-holding-- after thousands of years, he refuses to forgive Lucifer for what he did to Michael-- and lying, most especially toward people he cares about, the very people he claims to himself that he "could never lie to." Most of this lying is in order to protect them from truths he believes will hurt them (like when he withholds information from Michael about Lucifer's return); unfortunately, some of it is to further his own aims, such as when he tells Sara that her brother didn't come to her trial.

Women are both a weakness and a fear. He's known mainly for his lechery, and purported to be unable to refuse a beautiful woman-- however as seen when Sara asks for his help, instead of coming to her aid initially, he tries to manipulate her into sleeping with him in exchange for his help.

Especially during his initial canon appearances, he is rarely seen without a woman in his lap-- while this is at first played as comic relief (he gets interrupted constantly during foreplay), as his backstory is exposed, the reasoning behind his womanizing grows much darker. It's not out of simple boredom like he claims or sheer unbridled lust (at least not entirely): he's really doing it because he fears and hates them, thanks to what Belial did to him and the way that scandal destroyed his social standing. Basically he paints women with the same brush as Belial and is out to hurt them before they can hurt him, "punish" them by proxy, and seduce them with sweet words, only to discard them at whim. The facade drops as soon as he's gotten what he wanted or as soon as it isn't beneficial, but it's a good facade, if you like hand-kissing, over-the-top declarations of love, and a little roleplay.

He claims in canon that he only sleeps with these women because life is so boring-- and if the way he can carelessly push these women aside and casually move on with the rest of his agenda is any indication, he’s not satisfied with them, either, by any stretch. He says they’re like toys to him, but they’re toys he isn’t getting much entertainment from.

There are few people he's close to in canon, people who he believes have seen the real him, rather than simply how lustful he is, and for those few he would give everything. Much as he pretends to be completely self-sufficient and consumed with his own self-interest, he has a difficult time even dealing with the idea of being completely alone, probably thanks to his years of ostracism. This is showcased after Sara rejects him and he supposes that if Michael leaves him, too, he (Raphael) will finally break.

While he feigns not caring about what people think of him, he takes great pains with his appearance, mostly decked out in two- and three-piece suits, occasionally with his doctor's coat over it. Although some of the rest of his attire (zebra print) is best described as unfortunate, a good sign of some sort of trouble is Raphael not attempting to look dapper.

In most cases he brushes off what are really his acts of kindness, thinking that exposing himself like that would make him vulnerable to belittlement or rejection. It’s a defense mechanism. He’s been vulnerable before, during and after the scandal with Belial--and it hurt him, caused him to be socially rejected-- so, obviously, he doesn’t want that to happen again.

Abilities/Powers: Like almost all angels, Raphael has a pair of large, feathery white wings which enable him to fly, serve as a conduit of his astral powers, and, probably most importantly, function as his entire immune system, so they're only in use when they have to be. Raphael is the Elemental angel of air and has control over that element, though its uses appear to be primarily defensive (though he can use the wind offensively by using it as blades, when push comes to shove, he ends up reaching for his gun or using his fists)-- he can form literal shields of wind and cause objects to float out of his way. Unfortunately for him, his power over wind also has its caveats since he has a harder time using it in an enclosed space without enough draw on-- which becomes especially problematic since he has to call upon the wind to aid in more complicated healings, resurrections in particular. Raphael is known as the greatest healer in all of heaven, shown diagnosing illnesses and healing with only a simple touch, and the only one with the ability to truly resurrect the dead. His healing abilities are not passive and require conscious effort on his part, even if it's to heal himself.

Raphael has extensive medical knowledge, running Lakia's hospital, and a militaristic background, with experience in commanding troops as well as in hand-to-hand combat and firearms. He can also drive a car.

Items/Weapons: Pistol (containing all of... three bullets), set of earrings, and an evidence photograph.

Sample Entry: Here
Sample Entry Two:[third person / log sample]: The guard Sevotharte had left with him, the guard Raphael had left in a pool of his own blood, couldn't have been the only one. Surely Sevotharte had scattered more men around as a precaution, tossed them like bread crumbs around the area, in case Raphael's conscience finally disturbed him enough to double back. In case he made the wrong choice, the sentimental choice, the rebel's choice, and Raphael was none of those things for all that Sara's words echoed in his head as he pushed the acceleration, swerving down the road.

It was a testament, Raphael thought, to his own apathy that he he hadn't yet seen a single other soldier. No one at the ready. No one at all; the area was clear, maddeningly so. The insult couldn't sting when it meant he might arrive without another incident.

The photographs of her neck were half-crumpled in his pocket, pictures he'd snatched up just hours prior, taken with him on a demented whim he was grateful for now. They'd been a token then, a reminder of exactly what happened when authority was bucked, a remembrance of the woman he resented and the woman he wanted. He'd meant them to be buried in a drawer, not presented as evidence, not showcased to Heaven at large. Yet there they were, and there he was, his uniform tossed to the floorboard along with all it represented, the centuries of silence. The time he'd wasted, allowing a madman to reign supreme and a girl to nearly go to her death. He hastily finished redressing, his shirt one-handed as he continued to speed. Raphael was grateful, wryly, for the dozens of unexpected calls and video messages that had left him an expert at feigning order and propriety where none existed. He didn't start to fumble until he yanked on his tie, until the courtroom loomed in front of him.

Re: VIOLA | THE WITCH'S HOUSE | RESERVED

[personal profile] afunnystory 2013-03-29 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Character Name: “Viola.” As revealed in the true ending of the game, the real Viola is the young woman whose body the main character has taken; her real and spoileriffic name is Ellen, the titular witch. (I can tag whichever is deemed appropriate, but as her identity is a major spoiler, I've used the name she is referred to by for most of the game.)
Canon: The Witch's House
Canon Point: Immediately after the true ending, walking home with her new father.
Background/History: While the history section here contains most of the information, there are a few missteps and specifications that should be made. The world of The Witch's House is rustic and fantastical, with no indications of anything that would require electricity or modern conveniences. As for Ellen's past, a demon did not take care of her dirty work; she “X'd” her parents herself, with the demon simply cleaning up her mess afterwards. Finally, Viola had known Ellen for some time – a few visits, at least – before she was tricked into giving up her body.

Personality: As a character who doesn't have a particularly long canon, and one who only speaks in a single ending of the game, it can be a bit hard to quantify exactly what makes Ellen tick. To do so, one needs to look at both her dialogue in the True Ending, and the diary entries she has left around the house.

”I was sick, so no one played with me.”

From a young age on, Ellen was a wilting violet. The disease eating away at her body made it difficult for her to do “normal” things; she couldn't go outside and play without severe pain and fatigue, and it didn't take long for her to become completely bedridden. She found joy where she could: in flowers, scented and gorgeous; in clothing, adorable and vibrant; and in books of all sorts. A particular love to her was the occult – such fantastical, outlandish ideas inspired her a great deal. After all, escapism was all she had left.

”My father and my mother didn't love me.”

Her parents, on the other hand, weren't always the kindest of folks. Perhaps they were abusive, or perhaps they were neglectful, or perhaps they simply weren't able to handle the strain of having such a sickly child. These details are never revealed, nor are they particularly important; after all, their role ended soon enough.

”So I X them.”

At a young age – no older than thirteen, at the very latest – Ellen murdered her parents. She never once displays any sign of regret about her actions, and why would she? After all, it was this act that would attract a wandering demon. It was her parents' murder that gave the demon souls upon which to feed. And it was this source of food that led the demon to offer her a contract: continue providing souls, and the demon would give her magic of her own.

So, what do these diary entries tell us about her? By this point, it's easy enough to try to explain her actions, to point to the flaws of her parents or the influence of books on magic and witchcraft, but when it comes down to it one vital point must be made: Ellen is an awful, awful person. After her parents' death, Ellen refused to stop – she lured more and more children into the woods, killing them with her magic and letting the demon feed. And when she finally made a real friend in the kind and trusting Viola, she had no qualms whatsoever in tricking her, stealing her body, and leaving to live the poor girl's life for herself. When Viola finally dies, at the hands of her own father no less? Ellen is unable to stop herself from one last giggle.

Of course, Ellen had to make sure there wouldn't be any chance of discovery within her plan. And as a girl who has been confined in a bed, alone with her books and her thoughts for years and years, Ellen is nothing if not thorough. She saws off her legs and gouges out her eyes in secret before the ritual to swap bodies “for a day” occurs; when Viola cries from the pain, Ellen offers her acid in the guise of medicine so that her throat will be burnt beyond speech. This is partly due to Ellen's cautious nature and completeness in her planning, and partly due to her intense cruelty; she freely admits that her actions are at least in part to make Viola hurt as much possible, to feel as much despair as she can, before she dies.

But it's odd – even with her boundlessly awful nature, Ellen seems to have relatively simple goals. She has no problem with taking on the role of Viola for what will presumably be the rest of her life, and odder still she has no desire to fight against it. She goes as far as to promise Viola that her father will receive “all your share of love” when she's taken her place. Still, it seems unlikely that she'll go back to being a completely normal young girl. After all, she says herself that “it's not so bad, being powerless for a while” - not words of someone who plans to stay in their current position.

All things considered, what is it that makes Ellen her own being? She has taken on the role of Viola with great fervor, adopting a new name and a new body with it. She is willing to act out the part she has earned for an indefinite length of time; as far as she concerned, she is the new Viola. So she will smile at those she interacts with, and show kindness to any friends she makes along the path. But one must always remember that at her very core, beneath Viola's blonde braids and blue eyes, she is still Ellen, and Ellen is a wicked girl. She is cruel and sadistic, delighting in nothing more than the pain of those she resents. She has earned a second chance at life, and she will stop at nothing to protect it.

Just remember: if you wish to remain safe, always hide from the young witch's wrath.

Abilities/Powers: As a witch, Ellen had many powers – most notably the ability to trade bodies with someone if they gave willing, full-hearted consent. The house and all its residents listened to her and her magics, and she was able to kill many children to feed her demon. However, none of this is relevant with regards to her current state – when Ellen took Viola's body, her magic stayed in the dying husk she left behind.

Items/Weapons: A letter from her “father,” a bloodied knife, and the clothes on her back.

Sample Entry: Sample thread here.

Sample Entry Two: This place made her sick.

To wake up away from the life she had gained – to have a loving father and quaint home ripped from her grasp – was awful enough. Had she not earned her reward? The time, the painstaking effort, the years of slowly falling apart... Just the idea of losing everything she'd fought for was enough to make bile burn at the back of her throat. And yet this place was even worse than that, more revolting in its very nature. This place had no flowers. This place had no books. This place had not a single redeeming feature to it, not a one. This was the life she had been forcibly traded – a life of bleak, barren misery.

And yet... This place had not a single soul that knew of the witch's house in the forest.

She moved to the edge of her new bed, careful to tuck the bloodied dagger under what was being passed off as a mattress. It simply wouldn't do to get herself caught this early, now, would it? After all, she had important matters to be dealing with. Finding a way out, perhaps, or at the very least talking to all these people with powers of their own. It only made sense that in a hell like this, there would be demons somewhere. Brushing her dress off, she stood from the bed and made her way out of the room.

Perhaps this place wasn't entirely worthless after all.

Personality:
A few words to describe Nishi would be confident, mysterious, cocky, rude, vulgar, sadistic, self-serving, quiet, easily provoked, scared, blunt, selfish, violent - There's a lot of layers to this little onion, but none of them could really be described pleasant. He takes pleasure in the suffering and death of others, as evidenced by the fact he'd explode cats with his X-Gun for fun, and will withhold vital information and even lie about it to ensure he gets a good show. He only seems to show interest in violent things - when a girl confessed her love to him after following him around all day and he could tell she was lying, he responded simply with a 'don't care.' He is cold, threatening, blunt and very calm, only losing his composure when he gets excited about a death and begins to ramble about it. He doesn't care for others at all, especially those playing in Gantz as Hunters. They're simply a backdrop to him, or a dancing monkey. He does not engage people in conversation of his own volition normally, unless they do something to annoy him. In any other case, he will remain silent until addressed.
He's the type not to inform you about a doomsday counter until a week before it runs out, feeling as though it wasn't really important up until then. When backed into a corner and near death, however, he becomes colicky, cowardly and openly cries for his 'mommy'. He believes he can free himself from the game of Gantz on his own and does not need any help in doing so - he just simply wants to enjoy it while he's there. He is also very self serving and kind of a dick, using the 100 points he earned in a mission to buy himself an extra Z-Gun rather than revive a fallen comrade as everyone else had wanted him to.
Nishi also deeply detests society, stating he never hated any one person, but society itself for being so fucked up and making it so difficult for him to stay on the normal track of a teenaged boy. He has no trust or hope in anyone, especially hypocrites, thinking of them only as good as cattle. He believes society has given into the media and that humans as a race had ceased and cannot think for themselves - no one could care if the people around them just dropped dead. Life has not treated him well, and he is treating it with the same regard. he believes deeply in Social Darwinism and will gladly let the 'idiots' kill themselves off, without any attempt to help get them on the right path.
He was severely bullied in school, a partial cause of why he had become as jaded as he was. At the height, the children in his class had attempted to kill him by throwing him from the classroom window. This brought back memories of how he had gotten into Gantz (seeing his mother hung in their house, then jumping from the roof in order to kill himself to be with her and inevitably waking up in the Gantz room and becoming a Hunter) and sent him off the deep end. He was so emotionally perturbed he killed everyone in the classroom, save for the one girl who was kind to him and had confessed her love to him earlier that day. This shows that he is not entirely incapable of empathy, it's just a very rare thing to draw out of him.
He has a habit of wagging his chin and letting his jaw hang when he speaks, as if to cement what he was saying and let it hang in the air longer. He also has a habit of getting in people's personal space to give the illusion that he is bigger than he actually is. His stature isn't very threatening, but with the power the suit gives him he knows he can back up his talk and is not afraid to be very very sassy with anyone close. He has absolutely no reason to live except for having fun and witnessing and causing death. Though he laments the fact he never had a normal life, he knows it is unrealistic to expect one after all he had been through and the ways it had warped him. Though there's so much he hates, he has no desire to stop living in such a detestable world. Because, to him, that's what makes it fun. After all, when you have so much power, there will always be little consequence.
Abilities/Powers: absolutely none without his weapons (unless sociopathy counts) so take a look below for a good outline of what he can do with what he's brought along.
Items/Weapons:
  • (1) gantz suit - skin-tight bodysuit which is attuned to an individual body and can only be utilized by that specific Hunter. These suits provide the wearer with incredible strength, speed, endurance, and the ability to jump very high, as well as land without problems thanks to the shoes which are seen to release a white smoke to cushion one returning from a high jump. The suit also provides the hunter with an almost impenetrable protection to his/her body, even to the head, which is fully exposed. Large caliber bullet rounds to the face do not leave so much as a bruise. It should be noted, however, that the suit only seems to protect from conventional attacks such as bullets and punches as well as normal swords and the Gantz swords but does not seem to do anything for other slicing attacks like from a laser or certain acids. When in full use, the suits’ artificial muscles expand, making the Hunter appear larger. The suits also allow the wearer to easily lift over fifty times their weight and jump well over thirty feet high. However, the amount of damage it can sustain is limited. Should the suit receive too many powerful impacts without time to recover, the “caps” along the suit will break, releasing the essential substance that powers it, rendering it as useful as ordinary clothes. One can also attack the caps directly and release the fluid that powers it, as seen done by the Vampires and Izumi on different occasions. It should also be noted that attacks from the X-gun or X-rifle, will destroy the caps and render the suit useless. The suit limit of power also varies on the user, the stronger the person the stronger the suit. emotional stress can also damage the suit. nishi never takes his off.
  • (1) controller - Called a controller in the Gantz manual, it is commonly referred to as a radar throughout the series, although it has other functions. It is a device used to track the targets, displaying the targets as well as fellow team mates on its screen. However, the marker on the radar is not very precise and has created many situations in which the Hunters ran into trouble pinpointing the exact number and location of the targets. These are found in one of the weapon racks that is revealed when the Gantz ball opens. They allow for changing of someone’s frequency, rendering them invisible to those not on the same frequency. This allows them to turn invisible to other people. Vampires can counter this effect by wearing special glasses or contacts, designed for this purpose. The boss monster in the Temple mission has been shown to be able to see a person even when they were invisible, as has a powerful alien in the Osaka mission. They also display the time left in a mission and display the boundaries of the mission area which no Hunter can pass through unharmed.
  • (1) gantz sword - It is a katana-like weapon that is usually in a closed hilt-only state. When in use, an incredibly sharp blade extends from the hilt. It can extend without loss of durability and it is unknown if its length is limited; currently it has only been extended to roughly 30 feet.

Sample Entry:
[The city, despite its gloomy weather, was oddly humid. Taking a cue from others that his attire wasn’t completely terribly strange, Nishi had opted to wear only his sweater over the top of his suit. The tight leather breathed surprisingly well, and though it was clingy, whatever alien technology inside it made it feel far less restricting than most pairs of jeans. he found himself amazed by the suit every single day.
He felt his foot catch into something, and looked down at what it had collided with. A leg? A vagrant? A civilian? Whatever. He didn’t bother to apologize or look the person in the face. Everyone was gonna die anyway, whether he took a look at them or not. It didn’t matter. However, the man yelped in pain, causing Nishi to at least acknowledge the noise... But then the splash of red at his shoe caught Nishi’s eye and pulled a smile to his face. That was what he liked to see. He turned towards the other, looking oddly sunny about everything for what appeared to be no reason whatsoever.]
Does this belong to you? [he asked, pointing toward the blood on his boot, his chin wagging open in wait of an answer. When it didn’t come fast enough for his liking, and instead was met by demands for an apology, he laughed a choked laugh.]
Fuck apologies. Grow a backbone and do something about it, asswipe.
Sample Entry Two:
[His hands danced along the zipper of his sweater, up his chest and to his neck. He touched at the collar of the suit he normally wore beneath his clothes, sighing in relief. He had been allowed to keep it, so that had meant…]
Ah, good! [he muttered excitedly, pawing for the Controller. Being ‘infected’ didn’t bother his time at all. He dismissed the stealth mode he had imposed on his weapons which hung outside his pants. They returned to visibility with an electric blue fizzle, and he quickly hid them away in his designated dresser. A Y-Gun, an X-Gun, and a Gantz sword were what he had managed to sneak in, and he was thankful for it. Of course, along with his Gantz suit everything had seemed to be coming up Nishi!]
Alright, [he mumbled to himself yet again, leather covered fingers raking over the handle of his Y-Gun. Though the X-Gun had been so good at causing much more devastation  the Y-Gun was always more his style. The other gun, however, could be pretty fun sometimes too. It was never not cool to see someone’s head explode after their anguished expressions during the time delays.
Lifting the gun to his mouth and tapping it on his lips, he heard something behind him and turned. Though it was far down the hall, his ear had managed to train itself to always be on alert. It sounded like another person coming…]
[Nishi sighed, shoving the arsenal into his dresser before they showed up. He turned to the door, looking out it coolly with his regular cocky sneer and loose jaw. He holstered the X-Gun and stealthed it before using his backside to shove the drawer shut, tilting his head toward whoever had inadvertently joined him outside his open door with his arms crossed.
The male’s yellow-brown optics scanned his company carefully. She looked all together harmless, and he internally cussed at himself when his first thought was about how she’d never make it out of a Gantz mission alive.
His eyes were sharp in more than one way. They seemed to pierce through whatever they looked at, and the spots on which his lashes met seemed to be inhumanly angular. His short lashes flicked carefully as he finished taking her in, which under his scrutinizing gaze may have felt like a long time to some, was only a few awkward seconds. His gloved hands fell out behind him, the heels of them supporting him on the edge of the dresser. She was yacking away incessantly - How he hated people like her. After what seemed like a long while, he finally decided to speak, though he voiced his disinterest quickly with just his tone alone.]
You look pathetic, [Nishi raised his voice for clarity, his eyebrows lifting under his bangs. He pushed himself from the dresser, moving himself to stand chest to chest with her. To instill a sense of ‘bigness’ and intimidation, he was used to doing this. Curse his genes for making him so slender and short. His mouth hung open for a while before it began to move again. As he spoke, he tilted his head this way and that, moving in unpredictable and close ways to grind on her comfort.] This whole place is full of shit, huh? I haven’t seen much of it myself yet, but I pretty much fucking hate it here already, you know?
[A chuckle that ground in his throat bubbled to his lips; it was boyish with a scratching quality. He shoved his hands into the pockets of his grey sweatshirt, shouldering past her in his doorway. The sound of loose change fumbled nosily in his pockets and between his fingers.]
Try and be useful, [a mocking tone rang to her ears again.] Where’s the food hiding?

Cynthia ❧ Fire Emblem: Awakening ❧ No Reserve

[personal profile] shieru 2013-03-29 08:50 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: In the grim future where mankind has almost been completely wiped out from the world’s surface, the bravest and most skilled of remaining humans continue to fight desperately every day for their lives against armies of Risen, undead corpse soldiers loyal to Grima, the Fell Dragon of destruction whose resurrection marked the beginning of the end to the human race.

Amidst the few still living humans powerful enough to continue surviving, Cynthia, daughter to the legendary Pegasus Knight Sumia who fought alongside Chrom, is one of the children characters who managed to arrive to the past with Lucina. Thanks to the Holy Dragon Naga’s powers, they traveled through time in order to stop Grima’s awakening that will come to doom the human civilization. So coming from such a dark timeline with such a serious task, you’ve got to be pretty sober, right?

…Or… not?

Cynthia is encountered on the paralogue side chapter “Wings of Justice”, and the first notable thing about her is that she’s very naïve. A local bandit claiming to be Chrom, the Ylissean prince, has successfully convinced Cynthia to work alongside him despite the bandit’s extremely shady looks and attitude, and she’s swallowed his every word until the real Chrom shows up with his brand of the exalt – or her own mother talks to her first and converts her, with the ring to prove just which fraction Cynthia should REALLY be fighting for. She is just pitifully easy to fool, as long as one claims to be doing good for the benefit of all. Her naiveté can partially be explained by the fact that she’s practically grown up in a world with almost no other fellow humans, so her interactions with normal people aside from the friends she grew up and fought together with have been scarce. Still, it doesn’t change the fact that she’s always been very kind, energetic, and trusting of nature since she was a little girl. It’s revealed that she used to play Justice Cabal with Owain all the time when they were children, hoping to one day live up to the heroic legacies their parents left behind. Holding onto a greatly decorated (and exaggerated) image of heroes and the goodness they do, Cynthia is enchanted with dramatic entrances of a hero upon a battlefield and delivering inspiring opening catchphrases before the actual fighting begins. To give a few examples…

“COME, FOE! TASTE THE STEELY TANG OF CYNTHIA'S DEADLY BLADE!” “I AM CYNTHIA! YOUR BLOOD SHALL RUN THICK LIKE SWAMPLAND!” and “I AM CYNTHIA! I FLOAT LIKE A LEAF AND STING LIKE A NETTLE!” These are just… some of the things, of what the tactician might catch her shouting in the barracks when she’s practicing her lines during her spare time. Cynthia confesses to have dreamed that in the past, war must have been much more civilized. Having fought nothing but Risen after Risen, she optimistically envisioned that in the past, war was done honorably and nobly where both sides engage cordially. A hero is someone who stands up to evil and helps anyone who needs helping; a hero’s job is also not done so long as everyone doesn’t also have smiles on their faces. A hero is lovely, powerful, graceful, is fated to see justice done while kicking the bad guys’ asses, and must be recognized for their heroic deeds. A hero also operates alone while being alongside those who need protection from the very start, charging into a fray with no backup but managing to come out triumphant after keeping everyone safe.

…Or well, that’s what she believed when she first joins up with the army. Given that her endless amount of energy and optimism is an inspiring source of cheerfulness and a bright ray of sunshine to everyone’s life despite the dark times, no one has ever had the heart to disillusion her, tell her out straight that wars between humans in the past can be just as bloody and cruel as war with the Risen. The tactician does bring to her attention that she risks getting her own self hurt if she’s too busy posing and giving speeches, to which she eventually concedes to be true and begins to consider more her own safety. Her views of a hero does go through subtle changes for the better through the time she spends with the army, eventually coming to the understanding that a real hero not only looks after others, but themselves as well. A real hero doesn’t try to hog all the glory, a real hero helps everyone and does the most even if it they’re not flamboyant about it. In her own words, she had to be “less lone-wolf hero and more Justice Alliance hero”, so she learns to become much more cooperative with the army and aware of her own limits. Not to say she’d ever give up on dramatic entrances and opening catchphrases, but she’ll only do it in front of ‘noble foes’ when she’s sure it’s absolutely safe. If it’s smelly bandits, they can just eat the tip of her lance in their faces.

On a lesser heroic front, Cynthia is very open, almost shamelessly so. She would keep fishing and pushing for compliments from people she knows (during her support with Gerome, she wants him to keep telling her how great she is like he used to as a child), and would not hesitate to approach anyone she wants to talk to (read: befriend). She just… has roundabout ways of getting at it, like seemingly insulting Nah by bombarding her with humiliating Heroine vs Evil Dragoness stories when in the end, Nah figures out Cynthia kept doing it because she wanted to be her friend. …And stand on her head to look majestic, that too, but small perks, right? Cynthia is also a very sincere girl who takes gratitude and guilt very seriously. In cases when she had to apologize or thank people close to her, she does not let go even after the facts. In her support with the male tactician, he mentions her she’s thanked him already several times for making her realize how important teamwork is, and during her support with Laurent, she’s sent flowers and given singing telegrams to continuously apologize for the fact that he accidentally dislocated his hip on her account when trying to protect her. She’s also very supportive of the people she loves even if it upsets her, like how she ultimately confesses during her S rank support with Inigo that even if it made her mad that he would hit on any girl except her, she still cheered him on at every turn because she didn’t like seeing him upset. She doesn’t like it when people disagree with her, but she’s capable of thinking about things and making concessions when concessions are due. This is highlighted throughout her supports with Severa: while both girls start out as fiery enemies, Cynthia comes to acknowledge Severa’s spirit and physical abilities, deeming her a worthy rival and going so far as to acknowledge that she can learn from her ‘nemesis’. While being the complete opposite of the meek Sumia with her boisterous confidence and relentless enthusiasm, Cynthia has nevertheless inherited a few lesser fortunate quirks from her mother. This includes tripping over nothing and doing flower fortunes (picking the petals of a flower in order to decide what to do), she also tends to talk in her sleep and say… baffling things.

Despite her innocent and rose-tinted views of heroism, Cynthia is quite aware. She has lost both her parents at a young age and fought very hard for personal survival in a doomed future, after all. Depicted in her support with her father, she’s very attached to him and keeps trying to spend more time with him to the point of being pushy and taking up his whole day, because she always had the intrinsic knowledge that she’s not their ‘actual’ daughter. The ‘real’ Cynthia Sumia will have with the man she loves and has married is not yet born in this world. It’s for that reason that she wants to make the most out of their time together, given that she won’t have that chance in her proper future. It also takes a tremendous amount of spiritual fortitude to stay peppy considering the hopeless future she comes from, so she definitely possesses a certain measure of soberness, even if she’s otherwise an unstoppable force of nature that shall wreck goodness and justice anywhere she goes.

Abilities/Powers: Cynthia doesn’t have any super special powers, though she’s from a world where elemental and healing magic exist. She’s spent her teenage years fighting off the Risen menace that’s driven the human race onto the brink of extinction, so to have survived that, she nevertheless is a very skilled soldier. As a Pegasus Knight, she is extremely proficient with a Lance, so she definitely packs a punch and a lot of experience despite what her personality may suggest. However, there are unique abilities corresponding to each class. They’re more game gimmicks, but they can be worked into IC scenarios. So she will have the following:
Galeforce: Allows the unit to act again upon defeating a foe (once per turn). ICly, this would… Just mean she’s much quicker on her feet after defeating an enemy.
Rally Speed: Use “Rally” to grand +4 Speed to units within 3 spaces for one turn. ICly, this would translate to an agility boost spell for allies within her direct vicinity.
Lancefaire: Grants +5 Strength if using a lance. ICly, it just means she hits harder if she’s equipped with a lance.
Relief: Restores 20% HP each turn if no units are within three spaces. ICly, it means she can recover her wounds gradually if she’s by herself.
Speed +2: Grants Speed +2. ICly it just means she's slightly quicker than your average person.
Items/Weapons:
→ Her mother Sumia’s ring
→ A half-finished spearhead
→ A Killer Lance

Sample Entry: Would a meme thread be acceptable?
Sample Entry Two:
"...Gah, there's no way!"

Finally settling down on some ruins of a nearby debris, Cynthia sits down with her lance in one hand and a decidedly annoyed pout on her usually cheerful face. No matter how many times people told her, it still made no sense. They were on their way to the final battle against the big evil dragon! Just a little more, and they will all be true heroes who saved everybody in the world! ...Ignoring the fact that the tactician faces a very difficult choice, the person who's done so much for them - but things have to turn out okay, right? Justice always prevails, after all, and there's no way Cynthia will see it any other way. Still... how was she dragged here? This can't be Naga's spell, they already time-traveled to the past. And besides, no matter how run-down buildings in Haven West are, they remain completely different from the burned and wasted countryside ruins that she's occasionally had to camp in with her friends back home. She remembers those time well enough; they had to take refuge whenever available, when they weren't busy fighting for survival against Risen from all sides during the gloomy future they come from. The ruins are weird, but they don't look as bad as how she's used to. It's more stifling here though, she has to admit too: likely caused by that barrier, somehow invisible but possessing a presence she can't ignore. Maybe it's a good thing her pegasus was left behind; it'd suck to fly here anyway, if you can't glide as far and soar as high as you wanted. ...Poo-ey, it sucks. She's going to start missing Laurent, at this rate. He knew everything, right? So he must know what's up with this place, and how to get out!

...But in the meanwhile, as strange and weird as this place is, it has a really sucky and heavy atmosphere. She hasn't seen anything like monsters ambling around (they're apparently only in that 'subway' place anyhow), but isn't that all the proof that this town is in dire need of a hero? Getting back home is super duper important, but so is making sure that the people around you are okay and smiling! Even if they're all strangers, and some of them looked suspicious or smelled off. Justice and goodness don't discriminate, so neither will she! She'll have to start making rounds ASAP and get people to climb back on their figurative horses; as long as Cynthia is here, gloom and doom have no place to taint the hearts of the innocent!

...

A-hem.

"That's right! Who do you think I am?! I am Cynthia, harbinger of goodness and joy, hero to all! Wherever you are, foul and sneaky villain, you better start drafting your speech of defeat, for your days are numbered! I've been looking to practice my Twelve-Point Hero Spinner of Doom, and I've found just the right target! So just you wait, this will be an epic clash for the ages yet!"

Clutching her hands with renewed vigor and having her enthused smirk returning to her lips before she even knew it, the girl is already back to her usual self, energetically shouting away across the barrier with renewed pep. Yeah, that's right! She'll kick the butt(s) of whoever's responsible, then get everyone else here to go home. It'll be a great story to tell Owain too, he'll be so jealous! ...Oh, but she won't flaunt that much. You gotta talk to everyone and work together, after all. That's the role of a Justice Alliance heroine, after all!

Personality:
One of the most important facts to know about Kirito is the fact that he's both a «Solo Player» and a «Clearer» in the virtual reality massively multiplayer online role playing game called «Sword Art Online»— often abbreviated as "SAO." SAO is a deadly game where avatar death means death in real life, with the only means of ever being able to log out is through clearing all the levels it has to offer. This leaves almost no room at all for errors and inexperience when on the front lines, especially because there is a set amount of people currently within the game. While in the beginning there are ten thousand people, it's a reality that only a small fraction of the population is actually interested in placing their lives on the line to accomplish the aforementioned goal. Every single player is precious, and as the protagonist of the series, it's only natural that Kirito is a part of the game's minority.

With his childish features, it's not hard at all to underestimate Kirito and cast him off as weak at first glance. In fact, in canon, it happens pretty often. The titles he's managed to acquire, however, beg to differ. Clearers for instance are highly regarded within the game for their heroics. After all, how many ordinary people can say that they're willing to risk their lives in battle? Being a «Solo Player» is a whole other deal as well, as clearers often party up with one another to improve their chances of surviving. Solo playing does have its perks, though! But with them comes many downfalls, as instead of bringing fame, it brings infamy. Everyone that is in the game is essentially sharing the same problem, so to many, working alongside each other should be a given thing to do. But working alongside others splits the experience gained, and loot is usually distributed randomly or split evenly. Being a «Solo Player» has its benefits in this form — allowing you to keep both to yourself without competition. That is solo play's greatest advantage, so it makes sense that players that follow this path are frequently viewed as selfish and only caring of themselves.

Kirito has a thick skin in this sense, never allowing derogatory comments to really impact him. In the beginning, other's opinions do bother him — but eventually he is able to come to terms with it. Regardless of what the public thinks, solo playing is simply the most efficient way of getting around for him, seeing as he was one of few beta testers for the game. He has more knowledge than anyone else being one, so working with anyone early on would hinder his progress. There's no doubting that there's a certain amount of bravery (and arrogance) required to being a solo player too, seeing as it places you at a greater risk when training and/or clearing. (Curing status effects such as paralysis is a little hard on your own!)

"To tell the truth, I didn’t get along with people in real life or in games, perhaps even less so than in real life."

Despite the quote and the abovementioned, Kirito can get along with people rather well. Though some of his traits may cause him to seem antisocial and the works, he isn't averse to social contact. In fact, he actually likes being around people rather than being on his own as shown when he joins the guild «Black Cats of the Full Moon». He smiles, he laughs, he teases —and like everyone else out there his age, and he has his awkward teenage moments. The only difference with Kirito is that he isn't usually the type to approach others without reason or for a simple conversation. As most would misunderstand from him being a «Solo Player» too, he really doesn't mind being in a party with other people either as long as they aren't obstructing what needs to be done, seeing as he assimilates into being in one with Asuna quite easily. Hence, in the end, Kirito doesn't have a whole lot of self-worth, nor does he really view himself highly.

Kirito is the type of person to favour living modestly rather than famously. Despite gaining quite the reputation as «The Black Swordsman» no one really knows his identity otherwise. Showing off isn't his thing, and he even says at one point that he prefers to keep the cards of his hand hidden. The fact that he can dual wield (one of few "special skills" that is given to select people), is a prime example of this as he didn't reveal it until he absolutely had to. He's a quick thinker when it comes to battle, and he's observant of weaknesses and strengths of his opponent. It's later known that he was given this skill because he was the player with the best reflex rate — so he definitely is not a force to be trifled with on the battlefield. This isn't to say that he's always level-headed in his fights though, because while he tries to display little to no emotion in most, when he becomes angry — he's angry, and there is absolutely nothing that will stop him from crashing head first into his goal when he is. He has no qualms against following rules, but by the same token, he has no reservations against breaking them to get where he wants to go either. Naturally, willpower is something he has in abundance and his desire to protect his friends, to keep his promises, and to someday return home are the primary motivators that keep him going. All these do amount him to being quite reckless every so often.

There's no forgetting his tendency to blame himself with situations go wrong. With all his skills and knowledge, he believes that a lot of his past mistakes could have easily been prevented if only he had the hindsight to. Errors, no matter how small, can haunt him for very long periods of time as well, especially when they have to do with former friends. The fact that he doesn't have many of the latter causes him to care about each one so much more, often being self-sacrificial and doing things on his own accord in order to save or keep them away from danger. He has a strong sense of justice, which ties in rather nicely with his tendency to help those around him.

Sample Entry Two:
When the realisation dawned on him that he had been transferred into a new game (or "world," rather, as others would say), his only reaction was an uncommitted and spoken "Oh." before proceeding to move on to discovering what he could.

If a certain someone had been around, Kirito was sure that they'd be irate with how casual he was regarding his predicament, but in truth his facade of composure only served to hide how he was feeling underneath. Despite how he wanted, and knew how to act in such a circumstance — he really, truly, was quite angry. Driven as he was to clear «Sword Art Online», it seemed natural for it to carry over to «Haven» as well. There were twinges of guilt every so often, urging him to find his way back faster and quicker to fulfill the promises he'd made back at home — but rushing head first into the problem was never a very liable solution. Fortunately, he was still in the position to think rationally; it would likely hinder the process rather than speed it up.

He found that most of his free time was spent scouring for information or searching every nook and cranny — dangers were ignored. Warning and cautions pretty much went well over his head; exploring where no one had before — isn't that how one obtained more knowledge? No one knew what the criteria was to be sent back home, he had heard many times, and what he'd been doing was what many others had apparently done before him. Kirito was never the type of person to follow another's mentality, however, and wasn't it perseverance and persistency that had gotten him as far as he did in «Sword Art Online»?
