Applications Two

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
The next application opening date is Friday 16th January, 7pm EST.
The next application processing date is Friday 23rd January, 7pm EST.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

To see what we are looking for:
Canon Characters:
Sample Application (Faith Lehane)
Sample Application (Iroh)

Original Characters:
Sample Application (Mors)

Personality:
What is in a name? Is it your identity? Your past, present…future?

M-21 wouldn’t know. Because he doesn’t have one. He has a title, a designation. He is the twenty-first experiment of the M series of modified humans by the Union (also called The Organization). He is a “failure.”

Or at least that is what The Organization thinks and he doesn’t give a damn what they think. He stopped caring a long time ago. They took his name, his life, his comrades, even his humanity, and for years M-21 rebelled not-so-quietly—acting out with insubordination and rude behavior, hurting others weaker than him as a means of entertainment because he had nothing else to do with his life. He was their broken tool, one of dozens that didn’t turn out the way they wanted. If he hadn’t agreed to serve them, they would have killed him. He never would have had a chance to find his name.

So he played along with their rules and their ways, bottling up his rage and resentment and turning it out against unsuspecting innocent people when he felt the urge (to the point M-24 turned a man into a zombie-like vampire being and he didn’t even care except to know if he was useful to them or not). It wasn’t a permanent situation, there would be a chance to make their move. For years he didn’t care about anyone, save his comrades—and one by one each of them died until there was only M-24 left.

So he put surviving above all of that. He had to live on. he had to find his true name and the names of all his comrades who had died. The other “failures.” It was the goal he and M-24 had been working toward, the pact they had made. He couldn’t do anything for them if he was dead and so M-21 knew he had to live.

Things changed. Again everything in his life was taken away from him. He abandoned The Organization, M-24 sacrificed his life to save the very kids they had been tormenting to amuse themselves, and he found he had no way to get to the files that he needed to find the information about the experiments he and his comrades were subjected to. He had nothing. Where was the purpose for him anymore?

And then there was Rai.

Raizel and Frankenstein had already kicked his ass, put him in his place and showed him just how powerless he was. And then they showed him compassion, understanding and a willingness to forgive his actions and see him as more than a failed experiment that didn’t deserve to live. Even though Rai speaks few words, his actions were enough to convince M-21 that there was something about Rai that he might never be able to understand. But he wanted to, if only because it might answer the uncertainties he had within himself. This changed things for M-21. He had lost everything, but they reminded him that he still had a goal that could take days, weeks, or even years to achieve. And somewhere in there, he could have a life. If he knew how to make one for himself.

M-21 is a man of many layers. Like a parfait. A crunchy, uniquely flavored parfait that might give you indigestion and heartburn at the same time because someone didn’t realize that pudding, granola, and ketchup don’t mix. And be careful, that granola is a little stale.

Once he threw away the layer of rebellion and anger, it was obvious to see the quiet, reserved, awkward one beneath it. M-21 has a temper and can get offended by people he thinks are looking down on him or see him as lesser than they are for whatever reason (part of the reason he butts heads with Frankenstein at first, but over time they come to an unspoken understanding). When he stopped reacting for the sake of reacting, one could see that he was more calm about handling that kind of behavior than you would expect. This is also a sign of his growth since he turned his back on The Organization and decided to make the choices in his life for himself. He’s stopped being angry and accepted that there are things he cannot change, but he won’t just let anyone control him anymore.

The one thing that remains with him is his deep connection and affection for his comrades—the ones who knew exactly how he felt for they had everything stolen from them, too. Slowly, his goal has moved beyond just finding their names to surviving in a way that they would be proud of. When he almost died fighting Shark to protect Shinwoo, Yuna, Ihkan, and Regis, the thought in his mind was that he could die knowing that his friends would be smiling at him when he met them again. Dying for people he had come to care about, who were innocent and truly good-hearted people, for a purpose that meant something, wouldn’t be such a bad way to go. It was his job, as the head of the security team for Ye Ran Private High School, to protect these kids and that was what he would do.

He didn’t die. Raizel arrived and saved everyone—just as he and Frankenstein had done each time before. M-21 was already in their debt for they had taken him in, given him a job as the head of security at the high school, and gave him opportunities to achieve his goals that he otherwise never would have had. By this point M-21 had come to respect Raizel more than anyone. He serves him just as Frankenstein does, but he’s also in debt to Frankenstein, and he does what he can to show that he is grateful.

He cleans, puts up with Frankenstein’s jibes, lets him study his physiology and use him in his strange cooking experiments, and is generally a gopher and errand boy for him when needed. It’s not much, and M-21 lives with them constantly reminding himself that he is subject to their charity. It’s a restrictive feeling. He was even surprised that Frankenstein was providing him a normal paycheck for working at the school. As time passes he becomes more and more comfortable, but he never forgets all they have done for him and never forgets it could all be taken away just as easily. It’s disrespectful, and he’s aware that it’s wrong to have such doubts despite all they’ve done for him, but M-21 cannot change that all he has known is betrayal and being used for the designs of others.

It took a lot for him to ask Rai and Frankenstein to take in Tao and Takeo after they, too, defected from The Organization, but the connection, knowing that they were like him and would be discarded just as he was, pushed him to make the request. Because comrades and kinship (even when it’s not of blood), will always mean more to him than his pride and how pathetic he may come out looking. Frankenstein shocks him by telling him that if he wants them to stay, then they can stay, but their home is also his. Despite how comfortable and at peace he had begun to feel, M-21 had not yet thought of the apartment, or the town with the people he had come to know and care about, the school where he worked to protect the students…he had not thought of any of it as “home.” But as soon as Frankenstein said it, he could not deny that it was.

And thus things changed again and M-21 with them. He wasn’t alone. He had comrades and even “friends.” The lifestyle had become comfortable and routine. He had a purpose and yet he still had not given up his goals. He wouldn’t ever stop wanting to find out the truth, but that truth was something more for the promises he had made to his dead comrades. He had to find it out for them because they had died never knowing. But it was no longer a priority for himself. M-21 may not have a name, he may not even have a true identity, but he was a real person and he had a real place in the world, even without them.

M-21’s strong sense of loyalty means that he will go to the ends of the Earth for someone he cares about, and even when Regis and Seira are in trouble and Rai and Frankenstein are ready to leave him, Tao, and Takeo behind he refuses to let it happen. Like the others, he feels his debt to them—his loyalty is too strong and he cannot stand idly by. Raizel and Frankenstein have done so much for him that standing by them through dangerous situations is the least that he can do, even if he didn’t realize how dangerous at the time.

There is also a part of M-21 that is locked away inside of him that he has yet to be able to fully reach. The werewolf. When he was experimented on, M-21’s heart was replaced with that of a werewolf, along with other parts of his body, and he never knew until Raizel woke it up inside of him. Since then he has only been able to scratch the surface of that hidden side of him and he feels anger and frustration at what he sees as his own ineptness. While he watches Takeo and Tao improving, he feels as if he has stagnated and that he is too weak to reach out and embrace that power Raizel once showed was inside of him. He doesn’t express his feelings about this often or publically, but Frankenstein is aware of his feelings of inadequacy. The self-deprecation can all be traced back to the fact that M-21 now sees his purpose as being a protector to the students of Ye Ran and a servant to Rai and Frankenstein. If he is not strong enough to face anyone who would hurt those under his protection, he’s worthless.

Though out all of this, especially as his relationship with the young Noble, Regis, grows, M-21 is shown as having a strange interest in young people—possibly because M-24 had a soft spot for them. He himself isn’t the kindest older brother figure, but he cares and can be very protective—if gruff and aloof about it. He usually leaves the niceties up to Tao and Takeo, since they are more social and therefore handle those situations better. But because of his reserved demeanor, M-21’s actions will always speak louder than his words. His defending of Regis, Shinwoo, and the others, his loyalty to Rai and Frankenstein, and his willingness to plea for a favor for Tao and Takeo (and even his admission of jealousy that others could be free enough to have romance troubles), show that he’s come a long way. He’s not the guy who didn’t even care about anyone outside of his extremely small circle of important people anymore. And it’s not that this other, different, kinder person wasn’t inside of M-21 all along, it’s that the layers had to be peeled back to see him—and M-21 himself still doesn’t.

Abilities/Powers:
As a modified human (or ex-human as he’s no longer considered a human even by his own standards), M-21 has enhanced abilities: from speed (which has gone far beyond that of normal modified human standards even to the point he can match speeds with young Nobles like Regis and Rael), to strength, agility, and his senses. He is capable of hearing things from a far distance. He also has the ability to resist mind control as he practiced with his friend, M-24, to build up resistance to mental attacks.

Beyond that, M-21 is also part werewolf which affects his abilities in comparison to other modified humans. He has super regenerative abilities that allow him to heal from wounds that would be severe for others in minutes and potentially fatal ones in a matter of hours. If he had full control of his werewolf side, M-21 would be capable of fully transforming into a wolf-human hybrid, but he currently only has the ability to transform his hands into razor-sharp claws that are nearly unbreakable. The transformation extends up his lower arms with thick, protective fur.

He also has a strange ability to piss people off (seriously he does it so well some people don’t care how obvious it is that he’s doing it on purpose). This is a skill he has been practicing as he uses it against the young Noble, Regis, all the time (and it seems the others know about it).

Items/Weapons: The clothes on his back.

Sample Entry:
[After everything had calmed down, just when things were sliding back into their version of normal…he wakes up in this place? M-21 is sure this is some kind of trap. Had the Union found them? But he isn’t sure how someone would have managed to get into Frankenstein’s home without him noticing. Nothing is missing, he’s still in the simple pants and shirt he was in when they returned indoors for the night.

When was that? How long has it been? Finding the phone doesn’t provide him with anymore answers than he had before. The fact there are no numbers to call makes it more confusing, not less. Damn it. They were never going to catch a break at this rate.]

Who is listening to this? Where is this and why did you bring me here? [There’s a bit of a growl in his voice, because he’s pissed off. But overall he’s keeping his tone flat.] If you weren’t going to give me answers, there wouldn’t be a reason to take my phone and leave such a crappy one in its place.

Sample Entry Two:
This was a bad idea.

They were in the cargo hold of a plane headed for places unknown—it was cold and the sharp jostles of the plane’s flight sent them jerking about if they weren’t careful to keep their centers of gravity. They had been about to be left behind—as close to abandoned as they could be when Frankenstein was leaving them with all the money they could need to provide for themselves and no assurance he and Rai would ever come back—and they couldn’t have that. Not after everything that had been done. To them. For them. They couldn’t let it go and so they had decided to follow.

It was a bad idea, but the only choice they could have made. Would have made.

Tao seemed pumped by the entire thing, he was excited and filled with energy, telling jokes and sending playful jibes at them, all with one of those near-maniacal smiles on his faces. It’s the closest he had ever seen someone resemble Frankenstein when he was in a good mood.

Not an image that he wanted in his mind at the moment.

Takeo was taking it all calmly, but each jerk of the plane put him on edge. M-21 didn’t blame him for being wary. Stuck in the cargo hold of the plane, they had no idea what was going on outside. They were in hands of Fate and all three of them had about enough of that already. But there was nothing they could do, so they waited.

Waiting is shit. M-21 preferred to do something instead of sitting around waiting for the other shoe to drop. Being stuck there, not knowing what was going to become of the situation—or even what the entire situation was. Of course, that ass Frankenstein hadn’t told them—made him twitchy, annoyed. He wanted to know, wanted to be able to act.

And of course taking action was how they had ended up in here. Choices and consequences. One of these days, he hoped they’d get a damn break.

Except, the world would have to be ending for him to trust it.

When they felt the sudden tilt, the plane tipping down and diving toward the ground, he realized that maybe he shouldn’t even think about stupid things before he jinxed them all to early graves. The universe must have thought asking for a break was too damn much, even if he didn’t expect to get it.

Something to remember for the future. Now they just had to get out of the damn plane alive.
