Applications Two

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
The next application opening date is Friday 16th January, 7pm EST.
The next application processing date is Friday 23rd January, 7pm EST.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

To see what we are looking for:

Personality:

From an early age Tim showed signs of being a great detective, and as Robin, he became known for his ability to think rationally and plan. From just attending the Flying Graysons’ last performance as a toddler and seeing the new dynamic duo on TV, he figures out at a young age that Batman and Robin are Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson. After the passing of mantles it was easy for him to figure out who the new Robin was and that the original had moved on to become Nightwing. Tim was satisfied with following their exploits and doing nothing else, until he noticed how erratic Batman had been acting. Using what he had observed of Gotham’s vigilantes, he followed Batman without being noticed to obtain evidence and then tracked Nightwing down to show him in order to convince him to pick up the Robin mantle again. The fact that he manages all this without any help by the time he is a preteen spoke volumes, easily showing his aptitude for investigation and potential for future vigilante work.

This along with Tim’s drive to do the right thing at the risk of his own safety and his reasoning for why Batman needs a Robin convinces Bruce to take him on as a vigilante in training. Bruce continues the cultivation of Tim’s natural talents as well as his fighting skills for several months before he allows him out of the cave. But even after Tim is given the Robin suit, he still feels the need to continue training since he doesn’t feel he is able to live up to Bruce’s expectations and the Robin legacy yet. Whereas the other Robins and Batgirls have a tendency to just go out into the field to prove themselves, Tim instead would rather assess situations instead of being caught unaware, knowing fully that there can be irreversible consequences for himself and others if he rushes in without thinking. That doesn’t mean his instincts aren’t good, but that he would rather be thorough and make less mistakes. He’s one to consider all possible scenarios and risk factors, making plans to account for everything he can think of. It allows him to be several steps ahead and keep his priorities straight. It lets him keep up with the super powered heroes and villains out there, making him someone to contend with despite being a regular human being.

Though he has a pretty good self awareness of what he is and isn’t capable of, when push comes to shove he will take the leap, all the while knowing the possible consequences and how screwed he probably is. What matters more to him is doing the right thing and saving lives, especially when it involves people he cares for. That doesn’t mean he won’t occasionally underestimate the situation or overestimate himself. Tim knows he’s smart, and sometimes, that will come back and bite him. He will immerse himself into complex plans and situations, going through long hours of observation and gathering of intel to make his plans, all the while carefully manipulating everything to go his way. Most of the time it works out, sometimes it works with lesser consequences, and other times it completely blows up in his face, costing lives, sometimes nearly including his own.

This need to be in control partially stems from how protective he is of lives and those he loves. He has a tendency to take all burdens upon himself. He will occasionally ask for help, but in general he thinks he needs to do things on his own, including fixing his own mistakes unless he is certain he can’t. This inclination to shoulder responsibility, regardless if he should or not, will occasionally come at a cost to himself. His fear of failure, of failing Bruce, his family, his friends, even strangers, is what makes him that much more capable, but makes it that much more detrimental to himself. It weighs him down, creating a guilt complex he can’t always see past.

He also has a tendency to compartmentalize and repress, a trait he’s shown since before becoming Robin. While emotion will occasionally burst out, he will generally push his feelings to the side in favor of rationalization and logic, acting normal and doing whatever is needed even if it isn’t healthy for himself. He is capable of forcing himself to keep a cool head and not panic despite reservations or fear, something needed in leading a team and getting situations under control. His coping mechanism involves not thinking about the issue, and throwing himself into something unrelated allows him to forget the aspects of his life he can’t deal with, especially when it involves troubled personal relationships and grief. The older he gets, the easier it is for him to hide things and give off a perfectly fine facade, something most others easily buy. In the case of Kon’s death, he carried on as usual back at Gotham and with the Teen Titans. While people were aware of their close friendship and that it did affect Tim, none were the wiser with what he did in his free time – which he spent hours upon hours trying to re-clone him. Tim knew that even if it worked, this new iteration of a half kryptonian will never be Kon. He tries anyway, unable to accept this death after so many deaths of loved ones he was unable to prevent.

Tim will choose to do the right thing over what he wants or how he feels, a characteristic that colors his actions throughout all his appearances. He would rather give up Robin, a role that came to mean a lot to him, or to hurt his personal relationships if it means serving the greater good. Rules, promises, and relationships are important to him, but doing the right thing is more important. He hates how these suffer, but in end his priorities for them aren't as high, ending up as a detriment to himself. It doesn’t mean Tim doesn’t care for himself, it’s that he prioritizes things above himself. Strangers, friends, family, the world – they all rank higher in many situations. This has him pushing himself and taking on too much, and he doesn’t know how to stop.

While his rationality is greatly beneficial, it can also be seen as coldly calculated, especially the older he gets, and along with all the lying he does to keep secrets and save lives, it ends up causing him to hurt the people close to him, and occasionally it means burning bridges. He regrets it when it does happen, but not enough to take things back if it means more people live. While it had become second nature for him to lie, he struggles with it, hating to do so with those he cares for, but knowing it is a necessary evil.

One could liken many of his qualities with Bruce, most notably his detective skills. Because of that and other personality traits, others, including Bruce himself, have wondered or stated the idea of Tim becoming Batman. Tim however, has never wanted to become Batman, unsure he can live up to expectations and handle the responsibility required, nor does he want to be come Bruce.

Abilities/Powers:

Tim is a regular human being, with no powers or special abilities.

Martial arts: He is an expert level martial artist, trained by Batman, Nightwing, Shiva, and a variety of other masters around the world.

Weapons: His primary weapon is the Bo staff, chosen for its effectiveness and nonlethal nature. It’s the weapon he is most familiar with and best at, though he knows how to use others effectively. Archery is another skill he picked up from Batman, who had learned from Oliver Queen.

Detective skills: Tim has a natural aptitude for this, as shone when as a child, he figured out the secret identities of Batman and Robin, and then later Nightwing and the second Robin. This was honed by Batman, who is infamous in the superhero community for his detective skills. Tim is the analytical Robin, the one who figures things out and stays one step ahead.

Inventive: He has been shown in canon to come up with new gadgets and to modify existing ones for whatever purpose he needs them for.

Technology: An expert at computers and hacking, he can bypass almost anything he puts his mind to in order to find or manipulate something.

Medical: He has fairly decent medical know how from what he has learned from Alfred and Bruce, and his own experience. It ranges from the basics to knowing how to set bones and stitch people up.

Language: There is canon evidence that he is proficient in several languages outside of English.

Items/Weapons: Which three items and/or weapons will your character arrive with?
Collapsible Bo staff
Grappling hook
Rebreather

Sample Entry Two:

It started raining seventeen minutes after he woke up in an unfamiliar room, and even weirder, in an unfamiliar bed.

The first thing he does is check to see he is alone. The quiet stillness indicates he is, but he still spends several long minutes scanning what he can see through the slits of his eyes. He takes care to regulate his heartbeat to imitate sleep, and when nothing comes from his observations, he slowly sits up, rough blankets sliding down to settle in his lap as he places his feet on the dirty floor. There’s a very good chance he is being monitored in some way, but he isn’t going to get anywhere if he remains where he is.

The feel of the unbroken cowl under his gloved fingertips causes a rush of relief, but it’s immediately snuffed out as he comes upon an empty utility belt.

Everything is gone.

Every pouch and every compartment turns up nothing. Even the secret ones no one, not even Batman, was aware of.

He bites his lip and then forces himself to smooth out his expression despite the sickening rush of adrenaline going through him. He might be screwed. Okay, he’s probably beyond screwed.

They took everything and-

Wait.

Oh thank god. He thinks that the shape and feel of the collapsed staff stuck between the wall and the mattress is the best thing in the world, and his mouth can’t help but quirk up for an instant. Alright. He’s fully clothed, he’s in possession of his weapon, and nothing hurts. Time to figure things out and get out of here.

One proper look at the room shows an uninspired, tired decor. There’s nothing substantial for him to work with, except for mussed blankets and shed hairs that spoke of people residing here for at least a week, if not longer. He picks up a few and carefully stashes them away in a pouch and surreptitiously leaves the room. It’s more of the same in the common area and after a few minutes, he decides to leave.

Vaulting out of the window and into the building’s shadows lands him in what looks to be a stereotypical apocalyptic setting, and he sighs in irritation. He’s been on Apokolips, whoever did this could’ve been a bit more creative. Even the dirt that lightly puffs up at his landing is uninspired. He isn’t underestimating the situation, but man is he tired of waking up not knowing where he is. The thorough cleaning out of his artillery had him freaked, but there’s no room for that if he wants to get out of this situation.

A situation that isn’t adding up. He wracks his brain, trying to come up with something to indicate how he got here.

Nothing.

Not even a memory of passing out, which in and of itself is incredibly disturbing.

He can’t decide if that or the fact that he’s been left untied, unhurt, and still armed with one weapon is weirder.

He decides to go higher for a better vantage point, mindful of the slippery spots and crumbling patches of the building facade he had found himself in. Crouching into the shadows afforded him, he scans the surrounding area critically through the filter of his cowl lenses, still relatively clear despite the rain dripping down his face. The landscape and buildings are completely unfamiliar - naturally. It doesn’t seem like it would be anywhere on his Earth, which doesn’t exactly narrow things down. He could be on any number of countless planets, multiverses or dimensions, or even a different part of the time stream. Heck, it could be any combination of those, even all of the above. Determining that is going to be a real headache unless he finds people to talk to.

Even through the rain the message on the billboard is unmistakable. It’s obviously meant to be seen with its size and location. It takes a bit of squinting to make out all the details, but when he does it feels like something drops out from under him, leaving him winded despite the lack of strenuous activity.

”IN HAVEN, WE ARE ALL SAFE...TOGETHER.”

The pieces are starting to fall into place, and the possible conclusion he draws makes him feel vaguely ill.

The billboard with smiling people donning gas masks. A slogan that is obviously propaganda. The desolate town. Waking up unharmed with minimal tools.

It sounds like some sort of experiment. Or game.

“Just what I need.” He mutters under his breath.

Okay, so he may have found something creepier than waking up tucked into a strange bed in full uniform with no memory of how he got there.
