Applications Two

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
The next application opening date is Friday 16th January, 7pm EST.
The next application processing date is Friday 23rd January, 7pm EST.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

To see what we are looking for:
Canon Characters:
Sample Application (Faith Lehane)
Sample Application (Iroh)

Original Characters:
Sample Application (Mors)
Sample Application (Vera de Barr)
Sample Application (Malkus Iverwelling)

Previous Game History:

12th-19th December
16th-23rd January

Applications will be processed on the following dates (at 7pm EST):

Completely understandable! I have a link to another meme over here that I feel would be better served as a sample, but just in case, I went ahead and wrote one up, too! Thanks for your patience. :D

[ There's a bit of static and rustling on the audio feed before a friendly, distinctly male voice filters through. ]

Well, it certainly isn't a Coil, but I guess it'll have to do. I haven't seen anything like this in years... [ More rustling, and his voice sounds further away as he continues to speak; one can assume that he's examining the cellphone from all angles. ]

In any case. Hello there! [ His smile is audible in his voice as he speaks. ] Now that I've confirmed that this isn't some sort of fever dream, it seems that I've found myself in parts unknown. Perhaps someone out there would be able to help me out a bit here. [ There's a slight pause, and the sound of footsteps crunching against gravel begins to filter into the cellphone's mic. ]

First thing's first: if anyone happens to see my Allmate, it would be appreciated. He looks like a small, ill-tempered sparrow wearing a pair of geta, and he answers to the name Beni. I couldn't find him when I first woke, and I'm fearing the worst. Secondly... [ His tone gradually turns serious as he speaks, all traces of his smile gone from his voice. ]

... If anyone could tell me what, exactly, is going on here, please come forward. If this is some sort of sick joke, it's far from funny, and I've had quite enough.

(linked the wrong one, my bad!)

Sample Entry Two: Clear had never required sleep. As a robot, it was unnecessary and he had always found it to be rather frightening -- what if, like his grandfather, he closed his eyes and never woke up again? So when the loud buzzing pierces the silence, Clear jerks up, the surprise that he was asleep at all in the first place startling him more than the alarm clock. Was it a malfunction? He looked down at himself, taking a moment to perform a mental inventory. Everything seemed to be there, all his parts in the right place; to his left on the bed rested his gas mask, his clear umbrella and what looked like a cellphone that had seen better days on his right. Seeing the gas mask reminded him of revealing his face to Aoba what seemed like mere moments ago and he immediately looked around, head turning left and right.

"Master? Master are you awake?" More silence greeted him, along with the unfamiliar faces of the other guests in the room. This definitely wasn't Glitter, he wasn't sure if he was still in Platinum Jail either.

"Waah... Master, this place is so scaaaaryyy..." his mouth twists into a frown as he sits up fully, setting his feet on the floor. Looking out the window, he sees the desolate city sprawling beneath him, but what really catches his eye is the billboard, mainly the couple holding gas masks; they look exactly like his. Holding up his own mask, he slowly slips it back on before tucking his umbrella back into his pocket along with the phone. He needed to find Aoba as soon as possible, he had a feeling this place was not safe. With that thought in mind, Clear headed out the door, his plaintive cries of "maaaaassster!" echoing through the hall.

Personality:

Since his creation, the archangel Michael has always done as his father bid him to. From the smallest of commands, to those that required him to bring death to every human on Earth, he never refused. At first, he was being a good son, the best son, the right hand of God, and it was his duty to obey his father. But, while carrying out the orders that he never once thought to rebel against, he found the blood and violence to be intoxicating. There was a sliver of darkness deep inside him, and the battle, the murder, touched it and he reveled in the sensations. Michael always assumed that it was what his father truly wanted him to do, not realizing until it was much too late, that it was a parent testing their child’s character; and that his father found him lacking.

When the archangel loses himself to the blackness inside him, people get hurt, and he becomes the flood mentioned in the bible, wiping out everything in his path. The archangel had almost destroyed the human race, and his brother and sister nearly kill him in an attempt to stop him, the pair saving a young boy from Michael’s sword. Lying in a field, soon to take his last breaths, the boy he was going to slay gives him water and helps him recover. The child showed him through kindness and forgiveness, that doing what’s right isn't easy, but it’s, well, the right thing to do. The experience changed him, heart and soul, and Michael realized that his father was in fact testing him with his gruesome commands. Now, wanting to do what is right, no matter the difficulty, the archangel strives to control his emotions, to push away the darkness and finds himself overwhelmed with guilt when he makes the wrong choice or hurts someone.

Michael grips his emotions tight, and shoves them as far down inside himself as he can. And he does a horrible job at it. That control that he strives for, and often fails to have, is what keeps him sane. If he reverts back to the way he was, he will have failed his father and himself. His absolution is incumbent on the fact that he never becomes what he was, that he considers what is right and what is wrong, and does everything in his power to make the correct decision.

He’s typically stoic, expression a carefully placed mask of disinterest or unamused grimace, to keep himself from becoming too emotionally involved. That inability to control his emotions is what steers him away from feeling the lighter side like love and affection, wanting to keep from becoming attached to others. Michael doesn’t want to fall in love or care for anyone in specific, but he’s helpless to stop those emotions, and he’s shown to be more forceful and aggressive with those that he cares about. He’s harder on them, expects more from them, and generally, has a more difficult time with his emotions when they are involved.

Michael finds that he returns again and again to the arms of the same woman, unable to stop himself from seeing her. He tries to push her away, tells her it is for her own good, but it’s really his way of protecting himself. If he openly admits to loving her, it makes him vulnerable, weak, and under the right circumstances, it would be a doorway for someone to break open his carefully placed dam, letting the flood come spilling out again.

Another side of his nature is that he’s polite when he needs to be, kind even, and has a deep rooted love for humans. Even when he was a murderous tidal wave, washing death over the Earth, he still loved them. They were his father’s creation, his other children, and Michael’s other siblings. His affection for them did not diminish when he was asked to take out the human race, nor did it decrease when he found pleasure in the egregious acts he committed. It’s a striking contrast to what he’s done in his past, and a conflicting point in his character that he so loves the humans, but has previously killed them at his father’s behest. The love of his father, and his bloodlust, had won out over the love for the humans, until he was shown a new way. A light was shone on his darkness, and Michael could now clearly see what he was and what he needed to become.

When he rebelled against his father’s wishes, and became mankind’s only protector, he saw it as his redemption. Saving the humans, which would bestow upon him the ultimate forgiveness for his sins, has become his most ardent motivation for everything he does. If he can save them, change their fate, he can make up for the horrendous acts he’d once imposed upon them.

Revision - Personality Addendum

[personal profile] dug_the_dog 2014-08-16 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Dug is a non-violent dog. Under all but the most dire circumstances, he will submit to those in power. He is a good dog but is not possessed of leadership qualities. He is, simply, a part of the pack and is more than happy to serve and assist.

His master, Charles Muntz, has always had a great many dogs. Because of his master's tendency to keep a large pack, Dug was never lacking in canine companionship. Somehow, however, Dug's relationship with his many dog brethren became more than a little strained and, as such, Dug does not exhibit a great need for their validation or company. While it seems the majority of his pack recognizes his less than impressive intellect, and are willing to joke about it freely, only the leader, Alpha, appears to hold any actual animosity toward Dug. He assigns Dug (seemingly) impossible tasks and is perpetually ready to snap at him in both the figurative and literal sense. Dug is not especially bothered by Alpha, despite his hostility, and either ignores or is unaware of his attempts to shame him. When snapped at, unless actual violence is threatened, Dug will simply submit to him.

Dug is not, as a rule, a particularly suspicious creature. Whether Dug is simply quick to love by nature, or whether this friendly attitude was instilled in him by his master, he trusts humans on sight and expects no violence from any large animals that he encounters. Upon finally "capturing" the bird, Kevin, Dug fails to react to several threatening displays and simply begs the creature to be his prisoner. Rather than exerting any sort of force over the much larger (and similarly nonviolent) creature, Dug simply follows it and his new friends and assists them on their journey.

Of all the aspects of his personality, the one that most profoundly impacts his daily interactions is the hierarchy that his trust and loyalty are structured around. Dug is a dog and, as such, views himself and other dogs as more important and more valuable than lesser creatures (birds, squirrels, etc). However, as a Good Dog, Dug understands that his first loyalty is to humans and he will go against his pack and his submissive nature in order to protect humans. The value of individual people in relation to one another is something of a mystery to anyone who is not Dug, but he can be moved to violence against another human if the danger to one of his humans is overt enough. While Dug is not terribly bothered by insults and aggression from other dogs, rebuke from humans will devastate him (and, likewise, praise means a great deal and will bolster his mood instantly).

(I hope this is sufficient, but if there are any issues, please let me know.)

SORRY FOR EDITING ON YOU I asked someone who plays there if those type of samples were okay and yeah. HERE WE GO.

He knew something was off. Staring up at the ceiling of the strange, black marbled building, just getting his bearings, Kageyama could feel his eyebrows scrunching down and his attention everywhere, but he couldn't place what felt off just yet. Two legs, two arms, all toes.. shifting every limb, just feeling it there, he finally moved to sit up, hearing himself creak on the inside. Staring around properly on continuing to pick himself up, Kageyama looked down finally, then clapped his hands briefly together, just to make a noise in the silent space.

It echoed, he felt the force in his hands, but it didn't sound nearly loud enough. Clapping his hands together again, harder, something still was wrong. What was even wrong, outside of the obvious? Was there something up with this room, maybe?

Moving immediately and seeking out the only door, it's not the crowing of the birds that catches his attention. No, he doesn't even hear them; the movement catches the corner of his eye and Kageyama starts briefly, unsure of just what the mess of black in the sky was until he got a better look. Crows. Just crows. The longer he watches though, the more it feels important to keep watching, especially when they begin lining up single file... ah. They can't be normal birds. Or at least, they're trained. Trained by who, trained for what, is the question he thinks, before it shifts to a simple "trained to swipe people"?

Maybe. Crows aren't big enough to carry people away, but mass numbers - Kageyama shakes his head sharply, reaching up to pinch the bridge of his nose. Now he's starting to think like an idiot, this is clearly some screwed up, bad food induced dream. When did he fall asleep? He definitely remembers getting home from that practice match, but... ugh. What a pain. He's getting an idiot induced headache and there's no idiots even around.

Tohru Adachi ⚬ Persona 4 [1] spoilers for Ultimax

Name: Athena
Contact Info: [plurk.com profile] occults, athenapants @ Skype
Other Characters Played: None, but I'm a returning player if that counts!
Requested apartment: n/a
Character Name: Tohru Adachi
Canon: Persona 4
Canon Point: Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, Episode Adachi, right when Sho is about to deliver the final blow to him and Yu intervenes.
Background/History: Wiki

Personality:

Simpleminded and eager to please, Adachi isn't what one would call a model police officer, and that's no more apparent than when he's first introduced at the side of his senior partner, Ryotaro Dojima. Upon arriving at a murder scene, his first impulse is to duck out so he can throw up much to Dojima's chagrin, an action that more or less sets the mood for a large majority of his personality for much of Persona 4's story, because it's that single word — impulse — that describes a good deal of his character. It's Adachi's impulsive nature that unwittingly allows (or so we're led to believe at first) Yu Narukami and his friends to continue their investigation because, although they have no support from Dojima who would prefer that they stay out of police business, it's Adachi and his tendency to run his big, fat mouth at inappropriate moments who ends up becoming the Investigation Team's primary source of intel. Always up for a conversation, Adachi chats freely and openly about how the police are dealing with the serial murders plaguing Inaba, making him the only real inside connection our heroes have. However, even if you take that key part of usefulness out of the picture, there's still an innate sense of likability about him. To put it simply, Adachi is fun. He's friendly and goofy. Though he's meant to be Dojima's partner and supposedly has as much authority as the older man does, he behaves more like his personal assistant, doing errands for him and enduring his bossiness with the long-suffering air of someone who's very used to it, but at the same time remaining steadfastly loyal to Dojima and looking out for his well-being. In short, he's pegged as the game's butt monkey before we even properly know his name.

However, the truth is not always so clear-cut, and looking beyond the easy answer initial appearances may bring is one of the story's driving themes. And out of every character in the cast that our initially Happiest Game About Murder boasts, none come so close to conveying this message as Adachi does.

Eventually, the Investigation Team digs deep and discovers certain clues that cast suspicion on Adachi as the true culprit behind the murders, which turns out to be true when he ends up fleeing after they question him, leading them into the Midnight Channel where he finally reveals the truth behind his actions to them. It's here that the mask comes off and Adachi's true personality — that of a conniving, cold, manipulative sadist — rears its ugly head. Why did he kill Mayumi Yamano and Saki Konishi? Surprisingly, for no good reason at all: for the former, because she rejected him; for the latter, because he could. Of all the excuses he could make for his deplorable actions, Adachi is very upfront and sincere by cutting straight to the chase — he was bored, bored to death of being in Inaba, a town he wasn't even supposed to be in, and bored to death of rotting in obscurity while other less deserving people reaped the benefits of achievements he should've been recognized for. As he talks about his motives to the Investigation Team, it becomes obvious that Adachi is a hateful, bitter man with an entitlement complex the size of a small country who, in all likelihood, never joined the police out of a desire to do justice. In his words, the only reason he chose this particular career was so he could legally carry a gun.

Although one would expect some long, drawn-out reason for such deep-seated issues, Adachi has very little in the way of a backstory that would suggest justification for his behavior. In his Social Link, he reveals that he was went to high-school at a prestigious school where his grades counted above all else and, as long as he was getting good ones, his parents cared little for what he did on the side. All he could do was — in his words — “study his ass off”, which put him at the top of his class and prepared him for what he hoped would be a fantastic life with opportunities for advancement and recognition. When the real world outside of school proved to be the complete opposite for him, Adachi immediately takes this letdown and the subsequent failures that follow it as personal slights against him, all due to what he believes is a lack of talent, nursing a grudge against the world which begins to steadily grow into vicious contempt not just for the way society works but also for the people who he believes to be naturally born with talent — that magic ticket that ensures success and allows them to do whatever they want no matter how little effort they put into it. It's this very entitlement that leads to the deaths of Mayumi Yamano and Saki Konishi in the first place. Fostering a borderline obsessive crush on Mayumi, Adachi volunteered to be her assigned bodyguard in the midst of a scandal for the sole purpose of being able to get close to her. Then, when he found out that the rumors were true and she was having an affair with a city councilman, his immediate reaction was one of betrayal, acting like she had jilted him despite the fact that she had never even met him prior to that day. Rejected and angry, Adachi attempted to assault her, shoving her against a nearby TV which accidentally led to her falling into the Midnight Channel. Barely a week after this, Adachi tried to do the same thing with Saki, a high-school girl he brought in for questioning after she found Mayumi's body, once again making advances and reacting violently when he was rejected.

At no point does Adachi ever regret Mayumi and Saki's deaths. He goes so far as to call them worthless bitches who had it coming and even has to take a moment to remember Saki's name when asked about her. It's not a habit just isolated to them, though — it's everything. Killing two innocent women and manipulating a grieving man into kidnapping more victims to throw into the TV under the pretense of keeping them safe — most of which are high-school aged kids, mind — isn't a crime in his eyes: it's a game. Bored out of his mind, Adachi dupes Namatame into believing that the people who show up on the Midnight Channel are future victims of the killer, and encourages him to get to them first and put them into the TV because they'll be safe in it. When Mitsuo Kubo attempts to take credit for the murders as an attention-seeking ploy, Adachi throws him into the TV as well because he knows that if the police take him seriously and peg him as the killer, his game will be over.

Nothing is ever his fault. He didn't mean to kill Mayumi, but she forced his hand. Saki was a dippy high-school girl who deserved what she had coming to her because she was a smartass and a whore who was probably sleeping with Namatame. And if the Investigation Team only knew when to quit playing cops and robbers and go back to studying and doing what normal kids should be expected to do, none of the further altercations like Nanako getting thrown into the Midnight Channel and Dojima getting injured trying to chase after Namatame would have happened. Adachi likes to assign blame to anyone but himself and is either too deluded or just unwilling to admit that all of the misfortunes in his life fall squarely on his shoulders. The entire reason for his transfer to Inaba is a particularly glaring example; all Adachi says about it is that it was due to an accident that his superiors unfairly blew out of proportion. At heart, he's a coward who is the exact opposite of the Investigation Team. Whereas Yu and his friends face the truth about themselves and learn to accept it and draw strength from it, Adachi runs and hides from it. When they accuse him of being the killer and he knows that there's nothing he can say to weasel his way out of it, his first instinct is to run into the nearest TV and hide in the Midnight Channel, taunting them to chase him while he remains safe at the end of a labyrinthine dungeon, only making any attempt to fight the kids when they have him cornered with nowhere left to go.

Adachi is also very duplicitous even well before the truth about him is brought to light. He's the type of person who doesn't know when to shut up, but every so often he'll let a comment or two slip that's just a little too passive aggressive, a little too mean, but he's crafty enough about it to pass it off as a simple misunderstanding. He's also tremendously lazy. If there's an easy way out of doing something, you can bet he'll take it. At one point, he encourages Nanako to take shortcuts in her reading homework and copy summaries in the back of the book despite the fact that the book in question is a simple picture book. Instead of doing his own work, he can always be found in Junes taking breaks, which he insists is part of the job and a measure of his efficiency, and only seems to accept Yu's company because it'll make him look like he's doing something important to anyone who passes by. This laziness even extends to his personal life; Adachi has no desire to take up cooking or cleaning, stating that by the time he comes home he's too tired to do anything, and his only requirements for a girlfriend is someone who a) can cook well, and b) is attractive.

And yet, at the same time, it's no secret that for all of Adachi's arrogance and disdain for what the world has to offer, his own private one is deeply devoid of anything meaningful. He has no motivation for creating relationships. In fact, he actually grows very resentful when confronted with them. He believes that being alone and remaining detached from people is the smart way to live life because you aren't getting weighed down by their emotions or giving them the chance to hurt you. This behavior is exemplified by his relationship with an old woman who attempts to bond with him because he shares a name with her son, but instead of returning her affections and trying to form a connection with her, Adachi rejects her at every opportunity, hiding every time he sees her and talking about her behind her back about how annoying she is and how the food she brings him isn't even good. When she finally gets the hint and redirects all of her attention to her actual son when he comes to visit her, it's plain to see that Adachi is deeply wounded by it — almost as much as he is when he sees that her son is rich and successful, the expect opposite of what he is — and attempts to use the incident to fuel his reasoning for why it's best to live your life by your own rules without people burdening you.

[personal profile] assoiffe 2014-10-10 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:
To understand any Ghoul, there are certain questions of morality that are important to take into consideration. With the exception of Kaneki, all Ghouls are born as such, which also means that they're raised to eat human beings seemingly from birth. Not unlike how humans are socialized to not view their food as once being something alive, Ghouls operate in a similar way. Ghouls view humans as food and little more, because even though Ghouls that are more gentle would starve to death if they took on a "vegetarian" lifestyle. The way a Ghoul views humans as a whole is individualized, certainly, but all of them are united in viewing humans at least as food since it would be impossible for them to survive any other way.

That said, while most Ghouls choose to live separately from humans because of the innate conflict between the two groups, not all of them do. Clearly Tsukiyama is in the minority of people who have lived amongst humans, and for quite a while. Tsukiyama is said to blend in with humans seamlessly, where he's intelligent, charismatic, and friendly. He's an avid reader and very social, able to strike up conversations easily, and he's well-educated, since he has knowledge of many different languages and is even a senior in university studying social welfare, of all things. He's the kind of person that's very easy to get along with and trust, since he has a natural charisma.

Though of course, this is almost entirely manufactured for living easily amongst humans. While Tsukiyama is charismatic, he often uses his charisma to get what he wants, which is, without a doubt, an excellent meal. Tsukiyama is known by the organization that hunts down Ghouls by the codename "Gourmet" because he's the Ghoul equivalent of a foodie, only consuming the finest of meals. This is what inspires his obsession with Kaneki, which I'll get to later, but for a lesser example, he also plucks out a woman's eyes because they have a "lovely gradation of sepia" and eats them. This is unusual in itself, since most Ghouls will kill their prey, but Tsukiyama lets her live, as awful as that is.

Because really, Tsukiyama is awful. Once people know his true colors, they generally regard him with disdain, since his picky eating is generally harmful to the Ghouls as a whole, but is also exceptionally cruel and decadent. While we don't know much about Tsukiyama's background, his personality and mannerisms imply that he comes from a family with money, which is why he is able to be so discerning with his meals at all, to the point of being a leader of a fine-eating club for Ghouls, where humans are selected for their extra-tasty qualities for members to sample. He's cruel, vicious, and completely amoral, and while the flippant attitude towards humans is somewhat understandable because of a Ghoul's general attitude, Tsukiyama also shows the same sort of attitude to fellow Ghouls. He looks down on those who he doesn't deem strong or worth his time, and will show no hesitation whatsoever to kill his own, even allowing a slaughter of the members of his club later in the manga.

And why would he lead such a slaughter at all? Well, as it turns out, Tsukiyama's pursuit of excellent meals also gets quite obsessive, at least once he finds someone worthy of such an obsession. The object of Tsukiyama's thirst obsession is none other than the half-human, half-Ghoul protagonist Kaneki Ken, and Tsukiyama realizes how delectable he is when they first meet. Throughout the series, Tsukiyama starts off as absolutely manic in his pursuit of eating Kaneki, but once he's defeated, he takes a more subtle role. He eventually devotes himself to Kaneki, pledging to act as his sword, and this loyalty is, in some respects, genuine.

He does seem to genuinely admire Kaneki and in some respects, even worries about his well-being. However, the context that this worry comes from is up for debate. He expresses to another character that he wants Kaneki to return to being dolce, that is, earlier in the manga when he was relatively much happier. Yet knowing what we do about Tsukiyama, that may also be just because he prefers the "taste" Kaneki would have had then rather than than the more hardened person he becomes. He's not trusted by other characters, and for good reason—Many things that Tsukiyama does seem to have the selfish motives, so we can only assume the same for this.

After all, Tsukiyama may be intelligent, sly, and clever, but he's also motivated almost entirely by a meal, ultimately. He's willing to throw aside his own life for the sake of this meal, so he's selfish, obsessed, and unhinged, which makes that loyalty very disingenuous. Whatever virtues that might be seen from Tsukiyama's devotion are ultimately overruled when you remember that the only reason he's so devoted at all is to make sure that no one else eats his Happy Meal before he does. More or less.

Overall, Tsukiyama is a character of extremes. He's an intellectual that pursues hedonistic pleasure in food, but it just so happens to be that his food is people. It makes him ruthless, cruel, and viciously amoral, and yet, this part of him can be difficult to find. Despite the monstrous being he truly is and how much sadistic pleasure he takes in pursuing his food, to most he seems like a charismatic and friendly, if pretentious, young man.

Abilities/Powers:
Tsukiyama is a creature known as a Ghoul, which, simply put, is a creature that eats human flesh. While they look perfectly human most of the time, Ghouls are separate from humans, and have some major biological differences.

For the day-to-day, Ghouls are not able to eat the same food that humans do. Eating human food will make Ghouls rather ill, since their bodies aren't able to process it, and to go with this, all human food tastes especially foul to them as well. While they're able to fake eating human food with practice, it's certainly not good for them and if they don't throw it up, it will be a detriment to them. The only exception to this, oddly enough, is (black) coffee, which they're able to drink and process without a problem. The only thing they are able to eat is the flesh of humans or other Ghouls. They can eat any part of a human (Tsukiyama even eats eyes since he's grodie like that), and they are able to survive off the corpse of one human for about a month or two. When Ghouls are especially hungry or when they're using their kagune, their eyes change color, where the whites of their eyes turn black and their irises turn red.

In terms of fighting capabilities, Ghouls are much stronger/faster/more durable than your average human, and are able to heal from even extreme injuries rather quickly so long as they've eaten recently or eat more, depending on the severity of the wound. They are also able to utilize a weapon called a Kagune, which is a part of their body formed from a particular type of cell—One character in the series describes the Kagune as being comprised of "liquid muscle." There are four types of Kagune, but Tsukiyama possesses the Koukaku-type Kagune, which is considered the defensive type Kagune. This Kagune is released from around the shoulder blade and is quite heavy and is generally difficult to wield, but Tsukiyama himself doesn't seem to have much trouble with it. His Kagune generally takes the form of a sort of corkscrew around his arm, but he is able to move and manipulate the kagune so that it can form a shield or a larger blade if needed.

Haven really was an interesting place. It was magnificent, even, like a postmodern sort of paradise suited to either a insightful masterpiece examining the rise and decay of modern society or an absolutely trashy post-apocalyptic light novel. Tsukiyama certainly knew which one he would prefer, but as he sips on a beyond poor blend of instant coffee offered by his kind roommate, he has a feeling that the reality may slip towards the latter. But even that couldn't dishearten him, really.

After all, spending the day acclimating and meeting the other residents, he had made a wonderful discovery. The people here were so often unique, and absolutely delectable in that. He would never become a binge eater, because such a thing was so terribly unrefined, but for once, he could understand the temptation.

There were the dolce people he had met, sweet in their personalities and temperaments. Gentle, sweet young people who were so friendly and so willing to earnest help new arrivals. They had a sort of tired, haggard look about them, but their smiles as they carried on despite the hardship they faced were charming. They were a bit skinny, clearly food was a bit harder to come by here, but the ribs always held a pleasant flavor.

He had even encountered the rare épicé, usually not to his taste, but they were also simply rather difficult to find in the mild-mannered Japan. They were a bit brash, more stringy, but tough. Their arms and legs were usually the best, as muscular as they tended to be, and ah, if only he could give one a massage to tenderize the flesh before biting into it, it would have a wonderful, fragrant flavor.

And of course, there were simply the < savory >, his absolute favorite of all. Rich, complex flavors, expressed with interesting characteristics all around. Those were the ones he desired most already, and couldn't help but consider how to lure in. They were the one-of-a-kind flavors, the halflings like his dear Kaneki, but the ones that were similar to him, wearing a human skin, yet being nothing of the sort. They were an unknown, a curiosity he absolutely must sample, to know what sort of hidden flavors their kind possessed. Who knew what an eternal child may taste like, or a demon spinning clever and careful words like he could only dream of. Those sorts of flavors...

He sighs contently over his cup of coffee as he slips into his daydreams, and he murmurs one of those quiet words of happiness in a foreign language. Truly, if he could taste at least one dish that was truly rare and unique in its qualities... These detestable conditions would be worth even that.

Mai | Avatar: The Last Airbender 2/3

[personal profile] bladebender 2014-10-10 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:
On the surface, Mai is an apathetic and bored teenage girl. This comes from the fact that her parents rewarded a quiet, behaved nature for the sake of her father's political aspirations. Conceal, don't feel. Which grew into an overwhelming apathy and boredom. It is very easy to write her off as solely this, as nothing more than the apathetic knife-thrower. And while she is those things, she does more personality deeper than beyond that.

No one can ever claim that Mai is a perky person (Ty Lee describes her aura as being dingy and gray), but she is not unfeeling. She has shown rare moments of happiness (primarily when she's with Zuko), and she's not affection-resistant with those she knows (Ty Lee, Zuko, previously Azula as well but uh). She's not exactly the type to be down for hugging or comforting strangers, that's for sure. She is seen at her most content at Zuko's side in the Fire Nation, which unfortunately doesn't last (twice). She later kidnaps her own toddler brother from her father (when he begins forming a rebel group bent on returning Ozai to the Fire Nation's throne which wow no, let's not do that), showing that she cares for him even if she showed no concern for him a couple of years earlier when he was kidnapped by the avatar.

As a part of her apathy, Mai is easily bored and frequently complains about there being nothing to do. When she isn't bored (rare indeed), it's usually momentary before she returns to bored apathy-- "Victory is boring," as she said after a battle against Katara and Sokka. She seemingly has no interests besides being constantly unimpressed and playing with knives. Unlike many other citizens of the Fire Nation, she also lacks the violent nationalism found in them. It's clear from the start that she isn't in Azula's team against the Avatar because of national pride-- she's just bored, and Azula asked. She is far from evil, but she had few qualms against Azula's orders until they conflicted with things she actually cared about.

Some may claim that Mai lacks passion, this is not entirely true. It takes passion to be so downright stubborn. Making Mai do something she doesn't want? Yeah, just not happening. While Mai is usually apathetic when ordered about by Princess Azula, two moments stand out-- one, Mai's refusal to go into a tunnel of wet, dirty mud against orders (in her own words "She can shoot all the lightning she wants at me. I am not going in that wall sludge juice"); and two, a far more notable moment when she outright betrays Azula to save Zuko's life ("I love Zuko more than I fear you."). Even if she is fully willing to be Azula's lackey otherwise, she is immovable when it comes to her own priorities. Other instances of her pure refusal to put up with things include when Zuko keeps secrets from her and sneaking around, and her dumping him; and her father's attempt to recruit her to his anti-Zuko rebel group resulting in her essentially kicking everyone's butts and kidnapping her baby brother out of a clearly concerning situation (who brings a baby to their rebel meetings, what the hell dad). In general, Mai will just not put up with anyone's bullshit if she doesn't want to.

Being apathetic as she is, it's no surprise that this makes it difficult for Mai to form relationships. In fact, even the people closest to her dislike this part of her-- awkward, since this is the majority of her outward personality. Mai herself isn't thrilled about her personality (which isn't. surprising either, since she's never thrilled about anything...), but it's clear she's far more annoyed by people telling her what she should and shouldn't be. Given that most of her life was under the control of her parents wanting a perfectly behaved daughter and then under Azula's manipulative thumb, this is hardly surprising. Her temperament, as you'd expect, is calm. She is quite collected and only yells in rage when pushed to it by her friends during a group feels session (it was a beach episode). When she is properly furious, she burns a sharp cold like her knives. It takes a lot to actually anger her-- for all her complaints and minor annoyances, she isn't all that easy to properly anger. It's hard to anger someone who just doesn't care.

Mai has an incredible capacity for snark. This is hardly surprising-- when your two main personality traits are boredom and apathy, you develop sarcasm as well. These traits just complement each other. Mai is a master eye-roller in addition to being a master of deadpan. Side-eying is an easy hobby to have. Her snark isn't always spoken aloud, however, as she has never been a wordy person besides. As her voice is usually monotone, her sarcasm is as dry and deadpan as the rest of her.
