Applications Two

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
The next application opening date is Friday 16th January, 7pm EST.
The next application processing date is Friday 23rd January, 7pm EST.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

Mai | Avatar: The Last Airbender 2/3

[personal profile] bladebender 2014-10-10 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:
On the surface, Mai is an apathetic and bored teenage girl. This comes from the fact that her parents rewarded a quiet, behaved nature for the sake of her father's political aspirations. Conceal, don't feel. Which grew into an overwhelming apathy and boredom. It is very easy to write her off as solely this, as nothing more than the apathetic knife-thrower. And while she is those things, she does more personality deeper than beyond that.

No one can ever claim that Mai is a perky person (Ty Lee describes her aura as being dingy and gray), but she is not unfeeling. She has shown rare moments of happiness (primarily when she's with Zuko), and she's not affection-resistant with those she knows (Ty Lee, Zuko, previously Azula as well but uh). She's not exactly the type to be down for hugging or comforting strangers, that's for sure. She is seen at her most content at Zuko's side in the Fire Nation, which unfortunately doesn't last (twice). She later kidnaps her own toddler brother from her father (when he begins forming a rebel group bent on returning Ozai to the Fire Nation's throne which wow no, let's not do that), showing that she cares for him even if she showed no concern for him a couple of years earlier when he was kidnapped by the avatar.

As a part of her apathy, Mai is easily bored and frequently complains about there being nothing to do. When she isn't bored (rare indeed), it's usually momentary before she returns to bored apathy-- "Victory is boring," as she said after a battle against Katara and Sokka. She seemingly has no interests besides being constantly unimpressed and playing with knives. Unlike many other citizens of the Fire Nation, she also lacks the violent nationalism found in them. It's clear from the start that she isn't in Azula's team against the Avatar because of national pride-- she's just bored, and Azula asked. She is far from evil, but she had few qualms against Azula's orders until they conflicted with things she actually cared about.

Some may claim that Mai lacks passion, this is not entirely true. It takes passion to be so downright stubborn. Making Mai do something she doesn't want? Yeah, just not happening. While Mai is usually apathetic when ordered about by Princess Azula, two moments stand out-- one, Mai's refusal to go into a tunnel of wet, dirty mud against orders (in her own words "She can shoot all the lightning she wants at me. I am not going in that wall sludge juice"); and two, a far more notable moment when she outright betrays Azula to save Zuko's life ("I love Zuko more than I fear you."). Even if she is fully willing to be Azula's lackey otherwise, she is immovable when it comes to her own priorities. Other instances of her pure refusal to put up with things include when Zuko keeps secrets from her and sneaking around, and her dumping him; and her father's attempt to recruit her to his anti-Zuko rebel group resulting in her essentially kicking everyone's butts and kidnapping her baby brother out of a clearly concerning situation (who brings a baby to their rebel meetings, what the hell dad). In general, Mai will just not put up with anyone's bullshit if she doesn't want to.

Being apathetic as she is, it's no surprise that this makes it difficult for Mai to form relationships. In fact, even the people closest to her dislike this part of her-- awkward, since this is the majority of her outward personality. Mai herself isn't thrilled about her personality (which isn't. surprising either, since she's never thrilled about anything...), but it's clear she's far more annoyed by people telling her what she should and shouldn't be. Given that most of her life was under the control of her parents wanting a perfectly behaved daughter and then under Azula's manipulative thumb, this is hardly surprising. Her temperament, as you'd expect, is calm. She is quite collected and only yells in rage when pushed to it by her friends during a group feels session (it was a beach episode). When she is properly furious, she burns a sharp cold like her knives. It takes a lot to actually anger her-- for all her complaints and minor annoyances, she isn't all that easy to properly anger. It's hard to anger someone who just doesn't care.

Mai has an incredible capacity for snark. This is hardly surprising-- when your two main personality traits are boredom and apathy, you develop sarcasm as well. These traits just complement each other. Mai is a master eye-roller in addition to being a master of deadpan. Side-eying is an easy hobby to have. Her snark isn't always spoken aloud, however, as she has never been a wordy person besides. As her voice is usually monotone, her sarcasm is as dry and deadpan as the rest of her.
