Applications Two

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
The next application opening date is Friday 16th January, 7pm EST.
The next application processing date is Friday 23rd January, 7pm EST.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

Shoma Takakura | Mawaru Penguindrum | Reserved

[personal profile] frogspawn 2013-10-25 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
Personality:
The best way to describe Shoma is motherly. He makes it his duty to cook and clean and (+ he's quite good at both) and he's always the sibling trying to keep a balance between Kanba's impulsiveness and Himari's carefree attitude. Family is by far the most important thing to him, and anyone he cares about that deeply he'll fight to the death for. Not to say he wouldn't do the same for friends or even strangers-- Shoma is shown to be fairly altruistic, going as far as jumping in front of a car without a second thought just to save a friend from being the one hit. Afterward when he woke up in the hospital, the first thing he did was apologize because the friend had scraped her knees even though he'd tried hard to protect her completely.

He's a strong believer in always doing the right thing and he can be pretty reserved about it, such as when he needed strong urging from his brother to simply go inside a lingerie store and how he outright refused to go inside a girl's room without her permission just because he claimed it wouldn't be respectful towards her. A gentleman, this one. At least most of the time. Sadly, despite him being generally kind, Shoma has a tendency to speak without thinking and often comes off as blunt/sassy/snarky, which at times can be hurtful. He told Ringo countless times that she should give up with her plans, that things were over between her and the man she had feelings for because he was getting married and that continuing would be useless-- not because Shoma is a quitter, but because logically he just didn't see the point. He's a realist in that sense and unless someone shows him otherwise or it's for someone he cares about, he just won't bother with it and accept whatever may come.

Speaking of someone showing him otherwise, Shoma is incredibly easily to rope into things. You could get him to do just about anything with enough pestering and maybe a light threat here and there. At first he's adverse to the idea of following Ringo around to try and get her diary (the PenguinDrum, an item that can save his sister's life), and once they start talking he's still always complaining about all the ridiculous things that the girl gets up to and that she has him do (weird, weird things: at one point one of those even involves a frog laying eggs on his naked back)-- and yet he still does them all anyway, because it's for the sake of someone he cares about.

Unlike his brother who tries to hold his feelings in for the sake of being strong, Shoma is very emotional. He tears up when he's happy or overwhelmed by something cute and he bursts out into hysterical crying when something terrible happens to someone he cares about. Even so, he's not good at dealing with real, permanent loss. There was a time where Himari was dead for a good while and nothing was working to resuscitate her, and it was then that Shoma completely froze up and had zero reaction other than to mumble a few things, but he was otherwise completely out of it. He's fast to spring into action when he's needed (jumping into a lake to save Ringo from drowning and giving her CPR) but he needs extra time to process negative things that affect him.

Despite Shoma being oblivious/naive to things that most boys his age would be interested in (i.e. girls), he's desensitized and more acquainted with stranger things like big elaborate illusions, weird aliens that live inside hats, the idea of stalkers, and other things of that nature. So his being in Haven wouldn't be much of a shocker past the whole "Oh, it's not Tokyo" thing. He wouldn't be particularly happy about it, but he would learn to adapt, because that's just what he does. He takes whatever life throws at him and deals with it-- because he believes he's destined for that kind of misfortune. When Shoma and his siblings were young, their parents were involved in some terrorist attacks that killed a lot of innocent people, and ever since then he's truly believed that the world itself hates the Takakura children and that they must be punished. He might actually be a bit relieved to find himself in Haven, because if this is the punishment he must bare, it would mean that his sister is safe back home.

Abilities/Powers: Excellent cooking skills and the power to be overemotional. He also knows some basic survival skills like CPR. Other than that, he's just a normal human.

Items/Weapons: cellphone, kitchen knife, the sweater Himari knit for him.

Sample Entry:

... haaa, this better not be another weird survival strategy, because it's not very funny. Or creative.

[ the voice comes in soft, mumbled as if far away. Shoma was too busy pressing buttons and turning the device over to notice it had already turned on, so there's silence coupled with the static that comes from brushing against a receiver for a few seconds before he speaks up again ]

-- I got it! [ ahem. ] This is Shoma Takakura speaking, sixteen, from Tokyo. I guess I... kind of understand what's going, and I don't really mind having to be here, but is there some way we can use this thing to communicate with someone back home?

[ a beat, to let that sink in and oh god maybe he's talking to himself, what if the people he's seen aren't real ]

Aha, another thing, if you don't mind-- am I going crazy?

Sample Entry Two:

Haven. He'd already gotten the basics down from someone taking pity on him in the big apartment building, but it was still hard to believe it despite living it. Shoma had tried pinching himself over and over until his entire arm was red... and still nothing. It wasn't a nightmare. He wouldn't wake up in a cold sweat any time soon in his small home. Wouldn't have Kanba to kick awake so that they'd both have to deal with being awake at a ridiculous hour. Wouldn't get to sit outside Himari's door and watch her sleep, her soft breathing calming.

Shoma wasn't surprised that his thoughts were on his siblings. They were what mattered most, after all-- and he'd much rather be the one here than them. Kanba could take good care of Himari. The teen took a deep breath, urging all his worries to go away with its release, and was almost disappointed when it didn't go as planned (then again, he hadn't expected it to work). No matter. It was still his first day here, and who knew how long he'd be around? He'd have time to get used to it.

He ignored the pang in his chest at the thought and focused on his walk. It was still daylight out so he figured it should be okay to explore, get familiar with his surroundings. The emptiness made him miss the busy Tokyo streets-- another thought he pushed away as he made his way inside what seemed to be the remnants of a high school.

"Geeze... talk about nostalgic." He mumbled, eyes wide and scanning over one of the classrooms for a few seconds before he continues further.
