Applications Two

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
The next application opening date is Friday 16th January, 7pm EST.
The next application processing date is Friday 23rd January, 7pm EST.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

Nyx Assassin | DOTA 2 | Not Reserved (3)

Abilities/Powers:

TELEPATHY: MANA BURN
The zealot scarab is, to quote his profile in the lore, "a strange species of social insect with abilities unique to all the seven planes." This is a bit of an exaggeration, sure, but it DOES point out Nyx Assassin's most defining power: his telepathy.

All of his in-game voice clips make reference to his surface telepathy- Nyx Assassin's spoken words go straight to his targets' minds, rather than their ears. This may be necessary, since it's strongly suggested that his vocal chords can do two things: 1) chitter, and 2) go "Nyx." He can also sense the surface thoughts of others, constantly using his telepathy when tracking his prey or trying to avoid being seen. It's a strong radar, to be sure, but it doesn't go particularly deep- Nyx Assassin can't READ minds, but he can sense their PRESENCE.

Nyx Assassin has adapted his telepathy to his very specialized needs, weaponizing it as the MANA BURN, which is basically Nyx Assassin focusing his telepathy into one big bolt of energy and driving it into his target's mind, causing temporary disorientation, pain, and fatigue. This is more or less tailored to fight spellcasters, since they often need concentration in order to actually fire their spells.

EARTH SPIKE:
Zealot scarabs are underground creatures by nature, and Nyx Assassin is no exception; he feels the most at home beneath the earth, and can read underground air flows and remember passages with enough ease to guide him through (unless the tunnels carry some strange property of Haven, of course). Nyx Assassin takes this one step further by taking that instinctual knowledge and pouring magic into it, allowing him to temporarily summon spikes of rock and dirt from under his opponents' feet.

SPIKED CARAPACE:
In all honesty, Nyx Assassin's carapace isn't actually THAT thick, otherwise it would hamper his movement. What it has going for it is a layer of retractable spikes and the blessing of his goddess. Against melee attackers, of course, the spikes will do most of the damage. However, with the appropriate timing, Nyx Assassin can focus his magic and actually deflect mundane AND otherworldly projectiles, bouncing them right back at his aggressors. The downside is that, like a bulletproof vest, he'll still feel the pain and/or other secondary effects; if he's hit by a giant blast of magic, he won't get atomized (good), but he'll still get knocked right off his feet and probably stunned for a while (bad).

VENDETTA
Nyx Assassin can cloak himself from the view of others, making use of his own rigorous training in stealth and staying out of sight, which is no small feat given that he's a giant bug armored in a red carapace. More importantly, he IS blessed by the extract of his queen goddess Nyx, allowing him to go invisible fairly often.

NYX ASSASSIN'S DAGON
Previously, the Dagon was listed as part of Nyx Assassin's item kit. It was a nondescript magic wand capable of firing a nondescript blast of energy at the user's target. It was an underappreciated trinket that's often passed up; "true" mages normally have better and more cost-efficient spells, while non-mages don't have the mental fortitude to use it effectively.

Nyx Assassin only picked it up because he'd accumulated a sizable pile of gold and didn't know how to spend it- but once he started using it, he realized just how well it suited his fighting style, since he lacks a true mage's attacking spell AND actually has the mana stores to use it with impunity. Eventually, he grew to DEPEND on this strange item, incorporating it into his bag of tricks to the point where he would be much less efficient without it.

His queen-goddess eventually realized that her assassin's life would be made much easier if he didn't have to awkwardly lug around a wand designed for humanoid hands, and gave him a blessing that mutated his body for the better. Nyx Assassin's Dagon would forever be a part of him, a twistedly convenient appendage attached like a scorpion's tail roughly on the small of his back.

Outside of his own natural abilities, it was the only weapon Nyx Asssassin ever needs. Now that the Dagon IS one of his natural abilities, he's never been prouder.

Items/Weapons: None.

Sample Entry: Test drive meme!

Sample Entry Two:
"Nyx nyx nyx nyx..."

Nyx Assassin skirts unseen around the edge of the battle, his jagged gait muffled by the grace of his queen goddess. Let the unarmored fleshlings fight amongst themselves, driven insane by the powers behind Haven. Even at this distance, Nyx Assassin can taste their fear and their anger, radiating out from their minds as clear as smoke from a wildfire. Two are blindly fighting for control of the well and its precious source of water, while another pair are tearing at each other as only hated enemies can, clearly taking this opportunity to vent their bad blood. A fifth bystander remains on the edge of the fracas, trying to clamp down on his unnatural rage with a visible effort.

The zealot scarab takes a moment to shake his head in pity. Blind fools, the lot of them. He himself is perfectly calm, unwaveringly professional, and in full control of his thoughts. Praise be Nyx for her protection against such mental trickery! Praise be Nyx for choosing this humble servant of hers to be her emissary, her one and only assassin! Once he escapes from this terrible godforsaken prison, he will resume his duties on the field of war, fighting to secure control of the Dire's many powerful shards littered across the planet.

Nyx Assassin carefully picks his way across the pavement, keeping as far away from the actively fighting pair of humans as possible. His target, the fifth bystander, is so conveniently isolated from the rest of the pack. It will be the work of a moment to strike with his claws and slice the fleshling from behind, right before breaking the ground on which he stands. When the human lies prone, Nyx Assassin will further disorient him by driving a spike into his thoughts and end his life with a blast from the only manmade weapon he's ever agreed to make use of, the Dagon.

Even now, the goddess Nyx demands this blood be shed. And as the zealot scarab listens, she continues to expand the list of targets tasked to him, and he falls into the breezy confidence that comes with having your goals set by the highest authority in existence. Nyx Assassin revels in hearing the voice of his queen; he isn't sure how her voice managed to return to him, as he'd lost it upon entering Haven, but he isn't about to question his good fortune.

Of course, it never occurs to him that what he's hearing isn't the voice of his goddess, but another voice completely- the very same one that's driving the humans insane.

"Nyx welcomes you," Nyx Assassin hisses. His claws lash out just as his chosen victim begins to turn around.
