Applications Two

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
The next application opening date is Friday 16th January, 7pm EST.
The next application processing date is Friday 23rd January, 7pm EST.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

To see what we are looking for:

Canon: Aphorism
Canon Point: Chapter 56, after their role in 'Country'
Background/History: General Summary
The TV Tropes summary is the closest summary I can find about the general canon, but there doesn’t seem to be a more specific wiki entry for Tatsumi that has a more detailed summary of his participation in the manga so I’ll be explaining that as best as I can instead. I hope this is all right. Also, this contains spoilers for anyone who hasn’t read the manga.

On the first day of classes, most students would worry about meeting their new teachers and the amount of homework they might get. For the more positive ones, they look forward to seeking out new friends and forming a great school life. For members of Naraka High, their initial worry is surviving to see the next day. For Class 4? They had to endure Tomonaga’s reign on top of that.

Tomonaga, who had acquired the ability ‘Steal’, stole their homeroom teacher’s eyes and pushed him out of a window, catching the attention of the class immediately. Right after, he ordered them to sit down, and anyone who is too slow or tried to ran were killed or amputated. He told them that if they followed him, he’ll do his best to protect them, but if they don’t, he’ll let them get killed. With this, Class 4—including Tatsumi-- became a slave to his command. Tomonaga told them never to tell the other classes what was going on, leaving the rest of the school unaware of the problems inside their class.

Since that incident, Class 4 can be seen banding together at all times, even to the point that Hinata commented that they were strangely organized. However, they have also been executing more and more violent actions as the school year goes by. During one of God’s Blight, ‘Water’, Tatsumi along with two of his classmates were assigned to convince a fellow schoolmate, Shie, to fight during the Blight as her ability, ‘Fire’ was the only thing that could defeat Water. However, Shie being traumatized from the scarring she got on the first day due to inexperience in using her powers, refused and told them they could die for all she cares, prompting Tatsumi to lose his cool and start kicking her door. They eventually left her alone, though the next day they ambushed her before the Blight and tied her to the center of the quadrangle so she would have no choice but to fight. Ryou, who had the power of ‘Target’, made sure to have Shie targeted by the Blight at all times, making it impossible for her to escape.

With the help of Aya, Shie’s roommate, they both defeated Water, however Aya gets killed at the last second due to losing her guard, to the horror of the other classes. Tatsumi, after seeing this, showed remorse at their actions, but followed the rest of Class 4 nonetheless. Hinata, who had known it was Class 4’s doing since the beginning, decided to put an end to it by cornering Tatsumi in the bathroom to drag him out for interrogation. Hinata tricked him by saying that murderers would receive death penalty after school, and all accomplices would be imprisoned, scaring Tatsumi—who had only wanted to graduate. However, he also promised Tatsumi that, since his sister is a government official and was the head of the school, he can get away clean if he confessed. Tatsumi reluctantly admits that Tomonaga had ordered them to force Shie to fight with the promise that Hinata would make sure that Tomonaga gets the death sentence. However, this was all a lie to get him to confess. When Hinata tried to prod more information from him, Tatsumi refused to speak more in fear, and was instead given Hinata’s room number if he ever wished to approach him and tell him the rest.

Tomonaga immediately finds out about Tatsumi ratting him out and swiftly took out his vocal chords, rendering him mute. In despair, Tatsumi finally breaks and cries before Mikotogawa finds him, eventually admitting to Mikotogawa what happened to him, to her surprise, and that he had finally reached his limit in pretending to follow Tomonaga’s orders. Mikotogawa, upon finding out that Tatsumi plans on telling Hinata everything, goes along with him despite his protest, having reached her limit as well. After confessing everything, they offered Mikotogawa and Tatsumi shelter among their rooms to avoid Tomonaga’s wrath. They agreed, and Mikotogawa told the girls she’ll move her things the next day while Tatsumi stayed with Hinata and Rokudou. The next day, however, Class 4 found out about Tatsumi’s betrayal and Tomonaga had dealt with Mikotogawa, stealing her eyes so that she can never see Tatsumi again, prompting more despair and anger from Tatsumi. Once again, they tried to contact Hinata’s sister, but was sidetracked when the school nurse asked Class 1 to go for physical examination, leaving behind Tatsumi and the rest in their room. This turned out to be a hoax, however, as Tobari, who had the ability ‘Manipulation’, had used the teacher as a distraction so Tatsumi and Mikotogawa can be taken.

They searched for them around the school but eventually found Tomonaga with them. Rokudou, who had been the closest, was asked to join them but immediately refused, prompting Tomonaga to knock him down. Before he could kill them though, Hinata was able to get Katou, who had the ability ‘Erase’, to get rid of all three of them so Tomonaga can’t kill them. Furious, Tomonaga started looking for the members of Class 1. When he found them sneaking out food from the cafeteria so they can hide out in their rooms, he quickly stole Rokudou’s heart and killed him, stomping on it in disgust when he saw it still beating. Because of this, Hinata furiously demanded that his sister do something about the situation, to which he was dismissed with the promise that they’ll send someone in ten days, which Hinata found too long to let Tomonaga loose in the school for.

The next day Ryou warns them not to get in Tomonaga’s way, putting a target on Hinata so everyone will turn on him instead as a warning. That night, everyone keeps their guard up and couldn’t sleep in case Tomonaga made a move, but were caught by surprise when Rokudou returns to the school alive. Rokudou, who had the ability ’Change’, had a mysterious alter ego who happened to be able to do impossible things like reviving again for a limited time, but had to move quickly to find his heart. When he found it completely unusable, he went to seek out Tomonaga to steal his heart, prompting an all out war between Class 4 and the involved members of the other classes.

They then captured the members of Class 4 sent to ambush them and prompted Tomonaga’s location from them, but Tatsumi was caught by Tobari’s ‘Manipulation’ and immediately started chasing Mino around to kill him while the rest of their team scattered to look for Tomonaga. During this, they forgot about God’s Blight, which suddenly appeared and caused them all to be put in groups to find out how to escape. Tatsumi ends up with Hinata and Hirosue, another member of Class 4, who tells them that eventually Tomonaga will kill them anyway even without the Blight. When Hinata finds a pool of unknown gunk, Hirosue kicks Tatsumi in, making Hinata panic as Tatsumi wasn’t floating back up. He eventually surfaces with hands pulling him down, but was not in any immediate danger otherwise. Hinata threatens Hirosue not to do that again before they continue on to meet the guardian of that Blight. Given two options – fight or stay put—the guys chose to stay put by Hinata’s instruction, only for them to be given an illusion of themselves suffering gruesome deaths. When they failed to react to it violently, the guardian lets them go. During this time, Rokudou, who was teamed with Tomonaga, kills him and steals his heart so that his other self could live, freeing Class 4 from his reign in the process.

Once the Blight ended and everyone was free, Mikotogawa was given a new set of glass eyes, much to Tatsumi’s comfort, though they still remained mute and blind respectively. During the next few Blights, Tatsumi doesn’t play a big role and mostly comes off as support until the ‘Country’ Blight. Here, they experienced another Seperation type of Blight where they were matched off in 3s, and Tatsumi ends up in the same team as Tobari and Mikotogawa. He spends the first day defending Mikotogawa with no idea where Tobari is, and tries to get his cooperation before the next Country Blight occurs. However, Tobari refused to cooperate, much to Tatsumi’s frustration, leaving them to figure out how to solve it on their own.

Note: These are spoilers as the chapters have not been translated.

When ‘Country’ occurs again, he manages to find the location they needed to go in order to clear it with Mikotogawa. During this time, the enemy captures Tobari and experiments with him, turning him into a giant monster that kills all of the enemies. Tobari, who had been experiencing hallucinations of Tomonaga since his death, finally convinces himself that he wasn’t crazy and the reason he was the only one to see him was because he is the only one of Class 4 who would follow him. Everyone else would die except him when Tomonaga arrives. He then tells Tatsumi that he has known about him since middle school, as they take the same station home, and has always found his constant chattering with his friends annoying. When Tomonaga steals his vocal chords, Tobari admits to rejoicing because it means he’ll stop being noisy, but then wonders if he was just jealous of the fact that Tatsumi had friends and he did not. When he finds Mikotogawa there, he gets annoyed as he holds a grudge against her from when they were originally fighting Class 4, as Mikotogawa had tried to stop Tobari’s ‘Manipulation’ of Tatsumi by using ‘Conquer’, where he had to obey her no matter what.

Tatsumi starts fighting with Tobari at this point when Tobari decides that since they are traitors, Tomonaga will be pleased with them dead. Tatsumi then remembers Hinata’s advice, that the monster of this level, Tobari, would essentially be dead, has only his heart as the weakness. Hinata breaks through Tobari’s shell to hit his heart, but it has no effect, making him panic. Mikotogawa, who could not see the fight but can hear it, tries to help by using ‘Conquer’ once more, but Tobari anticipates her this time and breaks her arm, making Tatsumi furious. When he notices that Tobari’s original body is hanging limply off the monster, he aims for the human heart instead, successfully killing Tobari this time.

[personal profile] silenceofthelance 2014-01-24 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: When first introduced, one would think that Tatsumi can be demanding and violent, especially when one decides to oppose him, just like the rest of Class 4. In truth, a large part of that comes from the fact that like the rest of the class, they were all afraid of a guy named Tomonaga, and are constantly on edge because of it.

For the most part Tatsumi is very polite, if not a little frank unless he’s under pressure. He likes getting direct to the point and doesn’t bother mincing his words. However, that doesn’t mean that he’s not tactful, just that he doesn’t waste time if he could help it. Despite his initial treatment towards Shie, he’s not the type to resort to drastic measures unless it really requires it. In fact, he didn’t approve of his classmates forcing Shie to fight by binding her as the target of their enemy’s attack, and thought they should’ve found another way. He was the only one who showed any remorse for the death of Aya, who had tried to help protect Shie only to be killed unexpectedly. He thinks that a large part of that is because of Tomonaga’s influence on them, however he did not vocally oppose it either and even half-heartedly tried to defend their decision from Hinata.

Again, a large part of this decision comes from the fact that like everyone in the class, Tatsumi was deathly afraid of Tomonaga. Tomonaga, who had the ability Steal, had killed several people in front of them on their first day by stealing body parts, and anyone who opposes him gets dealt in the same way. To avoid getting killed, Class 4 did his bidding and grouped together each time, even if they did not approve of the outcome.

While Tatsumi is patient and can endure well enough under pressure, he does have a limit. In fact, it’s because of this limit that he caved in to Hinata’s manipulation and finally told him about whom their leader was. Tatsumi can only handle pressure in moderation, and most of the time keeps his cool in front of his peers, which is probably why he is one of the ones who gets sent to talk to others as representatives of the class. However, when he does lose his cool, he’s prone to be reactive and may kick doors or throw notebooks down on the ground. This usually occurs with student confrontations though, most probably because of the frustration of dealing with people who do not want to cooperate in situations that could very well kill them all. When in despair, he has no qualms about crying. When frustrated, he can throw a tantrum. When petrified, he stutters and shakes. When embarrassed, he turns really red. Even after losing his voice, it’s easy to tell when he’s surprised, confused or downright angry just by the sudden shift of his expressions. However, for the most part when nothing major is occurring to him, he has a very passive and stoic expression and doesn’t seem to get fazed by much.

One could say, in lieu of his actions, that Tatsumi is a very self-serving character. Unlike Tomonaga who would kill others to get them to obey him, or Hinata who would manipulate others to get what he wants, Tatsumi does this by doing what he thinks would benefit him more. With Tomonaga, following him meant that he could live another day longer. With Hinata, ratting out on Tomonaga means he avoids getting imprisoned after school and may open the path for Tomonaga to be arrested and hopefully receive death penalty. He always weighs his options and chooses the lesser evil, especially in a setting where ‘good option’ was a rare thing. While normally not a malicious person, Tatsumi does feel resentment and bitterness, and can be harsh when this happens. Just like how he called Shie a traitor and let Class 4 go with the plan despite his reservations about it, or wanting Tomonaga dead after all he’s done. The only exception to this is Mikotogawa, who he is extremely protective of. It is safe to assume that as long as you’re someone close to him, he will do his best to protect you. With Mikotogawa, who had absolutely no combat ability or spell, Tatsumi always made sure to defend her. Out of everyone in the school, he has only shown true loyalty to Mikotogawa and vice versa, but trusts Rokudou and his friends after they had helped them.

Tatsumi is also pretty smart and obedient, quick to listen to people’s advice and instructions and follow it as much as possible. With Hinata, he has no issues about following his orders, even if it means having to pretend that he was not freaking out when he saw himself chopped in half in an illusion. (Not to say he wasn’t freaked out, just that he managed to stay still despite the horror.) When stuck in a difficult situation, he is quick to analyze it and cross-reference it with things that he learned from others, drawing conclusions that have kept him and Mikotogawa alive during fights. He doesn’t always think ahead though, and relies more on doing things on the spot, which is especially frustrating for others when they have to wait for him to write down an explanation he could’ve done before.

When left to his own devices, Tatsumi can be a bit of a dork, and a curious one to boot, though he would never admit it. He actually likes cute and small things, and when he sees a sleeping Penta!Rokudou (The version of Rokudou where he turns into a small grass penguin), he becomes insanely curious about whether or not he’s a plant, how much he weighs and if he really is as soft as he looks. Each time he tries to pick him up, a schoolmate passes by and Tatsumi acts as if he was just (not so) casually stretching or looking out a window. One could say he just doesn’t want people to know he likes cute things, especially when he finally succeeds in picking him up, he was so happy that he didn’t notice Aira coming up until it’s too late and drops Rokudou out of the window. He’s very proud in his own way, and doesn’t like being looked down on, even if it’s something as silly as that.

Tatsumi isn’t exactly what one would call timid, despite being quiet (or rather, mute in his case) and obedient. He had always acted as one of the faces of Class 4, whether it’s asking for assistance from another student or helping out with sign-ups. When he was still able to speak, he was good at taking command and instructing his fellow classmates what to do. He’s more proactive than reactive, which is probably why people mistook his initiative as loyalty towards Tomonaga. According to Tobari, Tatsumi was always a talkative person, and was especially chatty with his friends much to Tobari’s annoyance. One could say that Tatsumi is friendly as well, given he does get along with members of various classes. When he lost his voice, he still went around the school to help out even if he doesn’t do the explaining anymore. He’s a responsible and reliable comrade for the most part, so long as you don’t give him a reason to turn his back on you.

Abilities/Powers: To give a brief idea of his power, one needs to understand how it works in the first place. In Naraka, during their first day of school, students are asked to write a character that they believe would aid them in a war. This character (kanji) will then embed itself onto a part of their body, and they can use it as a power to fight monsters and overcome challenges they’d face in Naraka before graduation. The power functions by summoning the character and using your imagination to have a clear idea of your mode of attack. For example, ‘Katana’ allows you to wield an actual katana as long as you have an idea what it looks like. However, for objects like ‘Fire’, you will need something that actually holds fire (like a torch) in order to use it. If you use your character incorrectly, it will recoil and damage you instead. So, if you use ‘Fire’ directly, it could burn your arm. Different characters can have several meanings, and all of those meanings can apply if you have a good enough imagination.

Tatsumi possesses the ‘character’ 戟, which means any of the following: long-handled Chinese spear; lance; pike; ancient Chinese halberd; weapons; arms; grip of a bow. Canonly, he’s only ever used it to summon two halberds (read as ‘geki’ when summoned) for battle, but like any ‘character’ used in canon, they are able to use any ability that is related to that so long as they can get a clear image of what it is they want from that character. This means that Tatsumi is capable of summoning any type of weapon if he wishes, but uses the halberds primarily as these are the weapons he’s practiced with. (Getting the weapon doesn’t mean you automatically get the skill, so if he were to summon a bow, he wouldn’t know how to use it anyway without practice.)

Items/Weapons: His clothes, pen and notebook (I assume the weapons are automatic since they're summonable)
Sample Entry: Thread at the Domestic Meme – Winter Edition
Sample Entry Two: When he first woke up without the sight of Mikotogawa nearby, he had flown into panic.

It was hard not to, given the last situation he remembered. The details were all too clear in his mind, and for a moment he worried that she might have been...

He didn't really think on it too hard when he finally got the chance to move. After all, he can't just stay asleep and pretend this was just a nightmare. He's had enough of those days back in Naraka. He also knew better than to underestimate a change in setting. Even if Hinata had not told him about this happening, it was safe to say it came with the unpredictability of the Blight. That made it really dangerous to stay put. So when he finally tossed away the sheets he was covered with and jumped to his feet, clad in the same gym clothes he wore during the Blight, he immediately made for the window to see what the outside looks like. The room made no sense, the place made no sense, and dread had filled him up almost immediately when he realized he wasn't back at school.

This place was no better.

He had expected trees or a bustling city, filled with the locals of the world they had to save before time ran out. Sure, there were unfamiliar faces, but this place looked gloomy and uncomfortable compared to the landscape he remembered seeing. The billboard was downright disturbing, and Tatsumi had to force himself to look past that towards the rest of the place to see a familiar face, or an activity that would give justification to the bad feeling he had about this place.

Mikotogawa's face flashes in his memory for a second, snapping him out of his thoughts. Right. He needs to look for her first. Avoid the people unless he can be certain they won't try to kill them again, and find his friend before something bad happens to her.

He just hoped it would be that easy.

Yay thanks!

Also, just a heads up, I'll be using two accounts with Tatsumi because I am dirt poor and they would be [personal profile] silenceofthelance and [personal profile] silencethelance. Thanks!
