APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
The next application opening date is Friday 16th January, 7pm EST.
The next application processing date is Friday 23rd January, 7pm EST.
IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE
We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.
In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.
You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.
Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.
If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.
Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.
We now have a test drive community athaventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.
While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

Jesse Pinkman | Breaking Bad | Reserved

Character Name: Jesse Pinkman
Canon: Breaking Bad
Canon Point: 4.7, "Problem Dog" - Episode End
Background/History: Click.
Personality:
Young, directionless and troubled, Jesse was never boy scout material to begin with. When his character is first introduced, it's made clear that at age twenty-five he hasn't gone anywhere after high school. The person we're presented with is an immature loser with a partying habit in place of any serious type of ambition. His drug habits, both using and selling, end up estranging him from his family and steering him to become Walt's full-time partner in manufacturing Crystal Meth. He ends up in way over his head -- Jesse likes to partake in illegal activities, sure, but he can't stand the business of murder, dead bodies or being in real danger, realities which hit them almost immediately and escalate out of control the further they go on. Uncomfortable as he may be, he's too easily manipulated by Walt into taking whatever extra steps are required for them to keep cooking. It's also something he becomes very good at, under Walt's guidance, and since he hasn't managed to make much of himself otherwise he enjoys the idea of having a valuable skill, of being good at something. Even if that something is selling poison to people who don't care.
But there's another major reason he sticks by Walt, and that is that he simply becomes dependent on him, the old Chemistry teacher he still refers to as Mr. White. When his parents more or less give up on him completely, Walt becomes the only older role model available to Jesse. Without quite realizing it, he begins to look to him for approval, for acknowledgment of any kind. It matters that he can do things right and that Walt chooses him over others, although he can never understand the reasons why. They do look out for each other in the lonely world that they've created, since they're the only other people they can talk to about their work, but they argue constantly and bounce tension back and forth just as much. These arguments tend to heat up quickly, with Jesse feeling angry and unfulfilled most of the time. He feels Walt's constant criticism and judgment start to weigh on him, something often played for comedic effect, but he actually takes most of it to heart.
He takes it hard when he disappoints someone important, but also perks up easily when people are pleased with him or treat him like he's special. Jesse's pretty insecure about his self-worth and tends to assume most people will dismiss him out of hand as a worthless junkie. He tries to use sarcasm, anger or just plain apathy for defenses, which means he's sometimes a straight-up rude little shit to other people, especially when he feels cagey. His speech patterns are peppered with street slang and he has a tendency to come off as an idiot, but every once in a while he displays an ability to think intelligently. Point of fact, when Walt attempts to quit the business midway, Jesse takes it on himself to replicate the crystal blue with nearly the same purity as Walt was able to achieve. It shows he's capable of learning and listening, something that he does more of than he lets on.
He often copies the people around him, absorbing what they say or do like a sponge and incorporating it into his personality. In fact, it's safe to assume his street-boy persona is something he picked up from his friends, considering he comes from an overachieving family with a middle-class background. It shows in his awkwardly genuine manners towards certain people, like Walter's wife Skyler -- he knows he should be respectful at times, knows his place around the people who deserve it. Loyalty and dependability are some of his best qualities, but he falters when it comes to believing in himself. To quote the director, "Jesse is a leader who thinks he's a follower." He's a big-hearted character with an instinctive sense of right versus wrong, but he makes poor choices nonetheless. He started out squeamish and timid when Walt drove him into the more gruesome aspects of the meth business, but he's since been exposed to so much of it that he's become dull to the trauma without losing his emotional compass. When he really examines what's going on, he hates the idea that they're both able to get away with their actions without consequences. He doesn't really have what it takes to remain in the business, but he stays. Poor choices.
With people that he likes, Jesse can be pretty fucking charming and sweet. We see this especially when he interacts with children, having a big soft spot for them and being something of an overgrown child himself, but he's not a total pushover or even above manipulating others for his own personal gain. After everything he's been through, not to mention what being an addict can do to a person's emotional and mental state, he can also be paranoid, distrusting and distant. Sometimes he's slow to come up with good ideas or prone to screw-ups under pressure, but he's learned how to be smarter and more graceful in tight spots. At his current canon point, the drug-lord he's working for has started to see potential in him and wants to begin using him for it. He's come some ways from the bumbling and naive character he started out as, but those parts of him aren't completely gone either.
Jesse isn't used to finding fulfilling relationships with other people, but that just might be because most of his friends are fair-weather ones, his role models are largely absent or downright intimidating and his significant others meet bad ends by Walt. He needs people, at the end of the day, but he's used to being alienated away from that need. At this point he's alone with what he's done, too deeply entrenched in the business to seek true friendship in anyone either than Walt. And that is a weird fucking friendship if there ever was one, to boot. When the shit piles too high, his coping skills are lacking. Distractions, drugs and noise are his favorite ones. He's somewhat apathetic about his fate and his life in general, disturbed by the fact that he keeps managing to get away with his own immoral actions. It's safe to say he's aware of how bad it's gotten and that he's haunted by it; he accepts that he's the "bad guy", and when there's no one there to judge him, it seems like he's itching to damn himself for it.
Abilities/Powers: Nothing special here, other than working knowledge of how to make really good meth. The business he's in means he's learned how to shoot a gun, but otherwise he's an average, mundane person from modern-era New Mexico.
Items/Weapons: ( 1 ) vial of ricin poison hidden in ( 1 ) pack of cigarettes and ( 1 ) small plastic bag of of Crystal Blue Meth, roughly 1 ounce.
Sample Entry: Here on the test drive.
Sample Entry Two:
"It's my lucky cigarette," he tells Mr. White, after scattering the tobacco out and slipping the tiny vial of poison into the skin.
A muted moment passes between them as they sit across from each other at the coffee table in his living room, all dim lighting and dark conversation. He's nestled the smoke neatly back in its pack, sealing away any possible excuses he could think up along with it. The job's been passed over to him, looming over his head. He said he'd do it, first chance he gets.
The way Mr. White tried to weasel out of outright asking him to take care of it is nagging at him and his thoughts keep scattering about the hundreds of scenarios where it all goes wrong, but Mr. White is always right about these things in the end. He manufactured the ricin in Gus' own lab and says it seemed fitting. It's grim and tangible, like this -- pre-meditated, or whatever.
The discussion is clipped and they don't have to fight about it, not yet, since Jesse has agreed. They have an understanding, or something like it. With Mr. White he always feels like he's trying to press down the glue on a tattered envelope that refuses to stick, some frustrating endeavor that always leaves him responsible for something big but unable to deliver. At least this time he has time. He has time and his partner is trusting him to use it.
"Whatever you do, don't smoke it," Mr. White replies, unfaltering.
There's an unsettling quality to the way he never twitches, these days, something Jesse notes to himself when he lifts his eyes and passes a look over the man sitting in front of him. Sometimes he blinks and thinks he doesn't recognize the face anymore, but all he has to do is wait a pause, a beat, and clarity swirls in: he'll never really forget this face, not for however long he lives.
All that's being asked of him with that retort is not to the cut to the inevitable chase. Jesse chews at his bottom lip, through an anxious frown. Yeah, he can manage. He can hold out for a while longer.
