Applications Two

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
The next application opening date is Friday 16th January, 7pm EST.
The next application processing date is Friday 23rd January, 7pm EST.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

Personality:
The first thing that can be said about Cleo is that she’s an extremely loyal person. As an active soldier who’s served in two wars, duty and loyalty mean everything to her. After her first tour of duty, she even took up a role of service in her commander’s household to work more. She sticks to her word and convictions above all else; if she says she’s going to do something, she’s damn well going to do it. When tasked with the simple task of protecting the Young Master (Tir), she goes above and beyond her call of duty at every turn, even helping him as he joined a rebellion. As a seasoned soldier, Cleo is usually calm, collected, firm-minded, well-mannered, and the voice of reason.

But Cleo also isn’t an idiot. When she sees someone doing something wrong, it hurts her—she sees her country abandoning their people, and her vow is forgotten to save those that are right in front of her. In contrast to Pahn, who blindly follows the empire, Cleo’s morals are well-defined and she sticks to those as well. She can’t turn a blind eye to people being hurt even if it goes against her word. She’ll stand up for her friends when an entire army is brought to her doorstep, quickly reciting the law that forbids them from entering, all because she refuses to see people get hurt for no reason.

And that’s what makes Cleo different. She’s a loyal soldier to the Scarlet Moon Empire, but she’s not a blind patriot, either. While she becomes a traitor in the eyes of many, she never sees herself like that. By continuing to side with Tir McDohl, she knows that she’s fighting for a better future for her country. Her loyalties and her duties are so important to her, but she’s not a woman who’s willing to sacrifice her morals just to follow a law. She stands by her friends. She’s sympathetic to the needs of others. She’s a voice of reason for most of the game, but she’s not so strong that she never feels, either.

And she’s far from perfect. While she’s a strong woman with a sassy comeback to every situation, she has a few weaknesses of her own. While she’d normally never agree to kill someone without thinking, the death of her companion and housemate Gremio sends her into a rage where she offers to kill Millich, in her eyes a murderer, herself. After seeing her commander, Teo, die at the hands of her new master, she goes along with Tir on his next few missions, telling him that she needs to keep moving or she’ll lose herself to regret and sadness.

Cleo also has a big heart—it doesn’t show often, but she can’t bear the thought of turning away from someone in need. At one point, she’s frustrated and desperate when she encounters a young Ted after traveling through time. Having seen the older him die, she tries to warn him about his fate, but has to force herself to stop. In one dialogue option, she also tries to bring him to the future with Tir. In another important conversation about her character, she reveals that her being a woman has nothing to do with her fighting and she doesn’t care how people see it. As long as she has something to protect, she’ll always be fighting.

For the most part, Cleo is a stern caretaker. She’ll casually snark with anyone available, but she’ll also dispense advice about fighting and how to live life when she sees fit. If no one is going to take charge or enforce a rule, you can be sure she will, even if she has to get angry. And she’s a knight in service—if anyone were to come between her and someone she’s protecting, they’d have a fierce fight on her hands no matter what. She recognizes the value of what she does, and she has no regrets about how she’s lived her life, and at the end of the day? She’s just fine with resting her feet, casually eating dinner with what remains of her family, and writing in her diary. She’s not just a soldier or a woman—she’s a person, too.

Abilities/Powers: Cleo will be bringing a Rage Rune with her into Haven, giving her access to powerful fire magic. She's a deadly mage and a skilled knife-thrower, and she's also skilled with archery.
Items/Weapons: Rage Rune, Air Moonstar swords, Sacrificial Jizo (revives her upon a fatal blow)

Sample Entry Two:
So this is how it was going to be. Another battlefield. For all intents and purposes, that’s what Haven was, after all. She had been filled in by everyone else, by people who have been here longer than she had. They all said the same things to her. Dangerous. Don’t trust this, don’t drink that. So even after watching her makeshift family get torn apart from the war...some deceased, some leaving home...she was going to have to put her life back on the line again. One moment, she was ready to retire her armor and her daggers and her magic, but here she was.

Well, if that was how it was going to be, she certainly wasn’t going to sit around and despair over it. She was better than that. She woke early that morning, donned her armor, and headed towards the tunnels by herself. At times like these, she knew it was better to fight. She needed to stay in shape. She’d heard that these people, Yao, this place...it gets the jump on people. She didn’t care. If she had any choice in the matter, she’d rather be caught prepared and in-shape.

That was what she told herself, anyways. On some level, she knew that she was just picking a fight with some tunnel monsters just so she’d have something to do. Sure, it was dagger practice, but she didn’t want to think about this—she didn’t want to think about Ted being alive or poison water or spirals. She just wanted to feel alive.

She took a quick glance over her shoulder before entering the tunnels. There wasn’t anyone behind her. She wasn’t foolish. She reminded herself that she wouldn’t go far, and she’d come right back out to rest. With a heavy sigh, she turned her attention back to the entrance in front of her and kept walking, hands at her side. Whichever poor critter showed its face first was going to regret it.
