Applications Two

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
The next application opening date is Friday 16th January, 7pm EST.
The next application processing date is Friday 23rd January, 7pm EST.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

To see what we are looking for:

Abilities/Powers: Emma is the product of true love, and as a result, is able to use magic. Initially, Emma was uncomfortable with using magic and it seemed to kick in instinctively. When Cora tried to take her heart, the woman was propelled back, and a bright light glowed in Emma's chest. She asked Gold about it, and he said that when he created the curse, he took advantage of what she was, but hadn't done anything to give her magic abilities. He encouraged her to use her magic, both showing her how to use an enchanted object, and how to put up a barrier spell. Regina has also helped her before, and has used her own knowledge from being taught by the Dark One.

While Gold was being controlled by Zelena, Regina officially became Emma's magic teacher. She quickly noticed how powerful Emma is, and was encouraging her to use and practice magic so that they could defeat the witch together. Previously, Emma was able to stop a failsafe from destroying Storybrooke, to start a fire, and to block the light of the moon with Regina's help. In the episode I'm taking her from, she will mistakenly believe that her magic is gone and will be surprised when it resurfaces in the game. Emma's magic will allow her to do any number of things (moving objects, starting and possibly using fire, defensive reformation of surfaces if she's about to fall), but in-game, I always keep it simple and only break it out when it's needed. Emma is more of a fighter than a sorceress.

Also, if you want to believe in her ability to detect lies, Emma certainly believes that’s a one of her gifts. She introduced it in the first episode as her superpower and told her newly discovered son that she could tell when people were lying. This ability is iffy at best; it doesn’t work when Emma is emotionally compromised in any way. When she was in denial about the curse, it didn’t prompt her into action when people told her the truth about Storybrooke. She believed Cora’s initial claim that she wasn’t like Regina after her arrival in the Enchanted Forest, and there are dozens of other instances where this ability failed her.

It's implied that it worked more often before because Emma had no attachments to the world and no stake in the things that were going on around her. As a bail bondsman, she was able to stay emotionally removed from work situations and because of that, could tell when people were lying to her. In a situation where Emma can stay neutral, it should work. In a situation where Emma can pick up someone's tells, it almost always works.

Look, if it sounds hit or miss, it definitely is. The bottom line is that Emma believes it's a strength for her.

All of the magic-related things aside, Emma is human and as such has a few more common strengths that would help her here. She seems to be a natural with a sword, comfortable with a gun, and when all else fails, she’s good with beating the crap out of whatever or whoever is in her way. She’s strong and athletic, resourceful, and will use whatever is around her if she’s being attacked. She's fought a pirate, a witch, an evil queen, a giant, zombies, and lost boys. Her background of chasing down criminals as a bail-bondsman should also come in handy.

If she doesn't have a plan to get what she wants, she tends to keep trying until she figures it out.

Items/Weapons: Emma will be bringing in Henry's storybook, wearing a faded peasant dress and a blue cloak, and whatever Enchanted Forest jewelry she has on.
Sample Entry: Log
Sample Entry Two: Of all the things Emma had been expected to wrap her mind around over the course of the last few months, this was somehow the most unbelievable. It had been enough of an inconvenience to have to look for Gold’s son in the first place, but then seeing who he was and realizing that the man they were looking for was the same one who had broken her heart?

That shouldn’t have been possible. It should not have happened. And he was asking a hell of a lot out of her in expecting her to understand that it was destiny at work and not his father manipulating them.

There were plenty of things she could question, plenty of things she wanted to argue over, but as she walked a few steps behind Neal and Henry while they attempted to make up for ten years of lost time, Emma was silent. She fell into stride with Gold – easy, since he hadn’t exactly been given the gift of speed, and she kept her eyes on the pair in front of them.

Henry had always looked like his father. The resemblance had been one of the first things she had recognized in the kid when he showed up on her doorstep in Boston. After moving to Storybrooke and getting to know him better, it became obvious that it wasn’t just physical. There was certain cleverness to him; an interest in planning, and scheming, and generally trying to convince people of his side of things. He was brave, and bold, and if she was being honest with herself she might have said he was all of the good parts of Neal.

That's if she was honest, which she now needed to be.

But no one was asking Emma for her opinion. They were talking about New York pizza and movies, museums, sports; normal things. Questions about the Enchanted Forest would come eventually, but as she listened, she realized that it was the kind of conversation that most parents probably had with their kids. And as much as Emma might have liked to have a place in it, there was no sense in trying.

Henry felt betrayed by her. He had every right to, because in lying to him she had risked this, even if the odds of seeing Neal again had been virtually nonexistent when the kid had asked about his father. When Emma thought of all the years she had spent searching for him, and how all of this had happened in the end…

Too much, too soon. She forced those thoughts out of her head, lowered her gaze to the pavement, and just kept walking.

[Note: I originally submitted this on Sunday, but the formatting was a nightmare and I realized that one of my samples was incorrect. I've adjusted it accordingly. Sorry about that!
