We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

Character Name: John Winchester

Personality:

John Winchester is a deeply flawed human being. Whatever happiness and light heartedness he once had died the second his wife went up in flames. He hides the pain of losing Mary under a veneer of gruffness. He resorted back to becoming the marine, the soldier. It was easier for him than allowing his emotions to consume and likely destroy him. Even to the point of blocking out any sign of obvious affection and love for his children. The pain and loneliness he felt after Mary were enough to drive him to keep taciturn about his real emotions and thoughts. Rather than openly admitting he is proud of his boys, he prefers to show them by counting on them with certain cases.

He is single minded in his obsession to kill the demon that destroyed his wife. This is his Moby Dick, he is willing to chase the demon to the point of madness, knowing he is likely going to be defeated. While he focuses on other cases, they have only been stepping stones for him, leading up to the final battle. He is well aware that he will die from the demon and is willing to sacrifice himself. His torment and need to protect his children making the sacrifice much easier to bear.

Despite the fact that he is generally harsh and stern, deep down, John genuinely loves his children. They have been the other driving factor of his life. His need to keep them safe went so far that he fought with Sam about his desire to go to college. He was frightened to let his son out of his sight, knowing that he would be without his protection. He said cruel words that drove his son away, but they stemmed from that irrational fear.

Like any parent, he makes mistakes, but he does recognize them and apologize to his sons in time. His desire for some sort of normalcy manifesting itself in his interactions with his youngest son, Adam. However, John always returns to the life of hunting the Supernatural. Beyond the vengeance, he does it for his sons, wanting to see them safe and not resting till they are.

His greatest love was Mary. They didn't like each other much at first, but once a cupid interfered and they were brought together, she was his greatest passion. After her death, he had a few brief affairs, but they never lasted long or meant as much. He wore his ring, even after becoming a widower. In his eyes and heart, he is still married to his wife. The mere mention of her is enough to bring tears to his eyes.

He is passionate about his work, allowing hunting to dictate his life. He is unable to make friends easily, usually preferring to focus on business. Bobby Singer (a long time friend) , remembering when he pulled a gun on John commented that John usually has that effect on people. Not many people talk about him fondly, unless it is about his ability as a hunter.

Only his children speak well of John. Despite all their fights, they have a deep rooted love for each other. Family always comes first.

Abilities/Powers:

Organization, hunting, tracking, military training, research. All the things that make a good hunter.

Items/Weapons: The colt (a revolver that can kill any Supernatural creature), his journal (which lists his experiences hunting Supernatural creatures as well as his research, his wedding ring

Sample Entry: [The last thing he can remember is being in the Impala, feeling the truck slam into his side. The sense of his sons around him. The family together, even in the face of danger. But it's gone now. There is only him, alone.]

This is John Winchester, request immediate assistance. [He looks around, trying to get his bearings. If he had his various gadgets, he'd take his coordinates, but none of them are here.]

I am going to say this once and only once. Where are my boys? Whatever you are, whoever you are. Know that I will find you and I will see you dead. Whatever harm you cause them, you'll feel it inflicted back at you.

[A pause]

Dean? Sammy? Answer me! That's an order!

Sample Entry Two:

Adrenaline is coursing through him as the car begins to speed away. The narrow escape from Azazeal more than close. His body still weakened by the temporary possession. Worst of all, he had been willing to lay down his life, to give up the fight and finally be at rest. He would know the demon was dead and his children were safe.

But Sammy had failed. He had allowed sentimentality to get the better of him and refused to shoot him, even at his urging. Now, there was another stretch of road. Another year ahead of him. Mary would never see justice so long as the demon was out there.

"I’m surprised at you, Sammy. Why didn’t you kill it? I thought we saw eye-to-eye on this? Killing this demon comes first – before me, before everything. " His jaw clenched as he fought the urge to bark at Sam, the usual response when his frustration and fear coursed through him.

"No, sir. Not before everything." John could see the look pass between Sam and Dean. The worse part of it was that he was right. Family always came first, but couldn't they see now that was the point? Why he pursued Azazeal with such a single minded obsession? Family. That was what was important and protecting them was part of that. His sons were all he had left.

So long as the demon existed, Sammy was in danger. He already lost his girlfriend. How long would it be before Dean followed? He couldn't tell them this now, they wouldn't see or hear anything he said. But he wouldn't stop, not until they were safe.

"Look, we’ve still got the Colt. We still have the one bullet left. We just have to start over, alright? I mean, we already found the demon..... " Sam's words cut off as everything faded to black. The truck slamming into the car and knocked John unconscious.

We are sorry, but we will have to decline your application at this time.

This is due to a couple of reasons. Firstly, parts of the application were not filled out, as both the canon and history sections were left unfinished. Secondly, we do not feel either sample gives a good indication of John's personality. If you choose to reapply, we would encourage you to try and showcase more of the different sides of John's character.
