Applications Two

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
The next application opening date is Friday 16th January, 7pm EST.
The next application processing date is Friday 23rd January, 7pm EST.
IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE
We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.
In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.
You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.
Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.
If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.
Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.
We now have a test drive community athaventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.
While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

(I'll be playing from the books, but with some details from the movies to fill in the blanks!)
At first, Rue's quietness paints her as a weaker, passive tribute for that year's Hunger Games, but once she allies herself with Katniss, it's clear that she is nothing like that. Being cautious and observant are actually traits that helps her survive both in her district, and in the Hunger Games. As Katniss realizes later, life is much harder in District 11 than in District 12; a misstep in District 11 could result in a severe whipping or even death, which could account for Rue's general skittishness around strangers. Like Katniss, Rue understands the importance of keeping out of sight and keeping your talents secret in a dangerous situation. Rather than showing off at the Training Center like the career tributes do, Rue follows Katniss and Peeta's lead, going from station to station and learning new things. While Katniss, and possibly the other tributes, notice Rue's very agile and good with a slingshot, none of them ever suspect she's capable of leaping from tree to tree with ease. This ability, coupled with her tendency to watch from a distance rather than engage, allows her to obtain valuable information on the other tributes while remaining shielded from their eyes. Like she tells Caesar during her interview: "If they can't catch me, they can't kill me." Rue knows what she is and isn't good at, and that's what turns her cautiousness into a strength rather than a weakness.
Once Rue and Katniss form an alliance, Rue opens up to her, revealing a cheerful and kind girl that she had kept hidden all that time before. Living in District 11 might have taught Rue to be careful, but it's also taught her to appreciate the things in life that bring her happiness. While she's with Katniss, she doesn't try to keep a distance, but laughs openly at anything that amuses her. Though Rue is only twelve, she is the eldest of many siblings, and like Katniss, looks after her family as best she can. Even when food is already scarce for her--she tells Katniss she's never had a leg of Groosling to herself before--she's willing to give up her portion of rations to her younger siblings if they need it. And, despite the severe punishments the District 11 officials deal out, Rue tells Katniss she often went foraging illegally in the meadow to find more food for her family. Amazingly, her kindness isn't limited to her family alone. Rue is known for alerting the other workers when the flag signaling the end of the work day in the district goes up, though she doesn't benefit from helping the others. In a district where the work conditions are harsh, and they are occasionally forced to work through the night, getting even a little more rest time is something precious. Then, when Katniss tells Rue to take the sleeping bag when they split up, Rue asks "What about you?" instead of taking it immediately. Considering how cold the nights had been in the Arena, and the tributes are expected to kill each other in the Games, this is a remarkable gesture of kindness. In the end, Rue might be wary around the other tributes--and rightfully so--but Rue loves deeply and puts those that matter to her before herself.
Caring too deeply about something as Rue does, of course, comes with its own consequences. When Rue starts caring about something enough, she ends up being too reckless, or too trusting in some cases, which cancels out the advantage her cautiousness gives her. Rue's reason for trusting Katniss in the first place ties in with her sentimentality. Loving music and the mockingjays that mimic her songs back in District 11 as she does, Rue delights in the mockingjay pin that Katniss wears into the games, shadowing and helping Katniss because of it. Though Rue, fortunately, finds a trustworthy friend in Katniss, she took an unnecessary risk because of something that reminded her of home, and the result could have been her death had it been any other Tribute.
Another trait that her cautiousness can sometimes hides is her mischievousness. Rue loves teasing once she feels she's not in danger, like the way she teases Katniss about Peeta while they share a meal. She also enjoys playing a practical joke or two--and sometimes, those pranks reveal the slightly more ruthless side to her that growing up in Panem has cultivated. Though Rue doesn't seem to like violence in general, she's also practical about letting the other Tributes (particularly the Careers) just duke it out; she grew up in the Districts, after all, and she knows exactly what the Games are about. Like many from the Districts, Rue has a dislike for the Tributes who come from the Career districts, since they actually enjoy the Games and often team up in a "Career pack" to slaughter the other Tributes. When she steals one of the Career's knives in the training area, she's perfectly content watching him blame another Career for it and let the animosity between them build. This side of her comes out again when she warns Katniss about the tracker jackers while they're both hiding from the Career pack. Though Katniss is the one who decides to drop the nest onto the Careers in the books, it's Rue who gives her the idea in the movies. Though the scene changes depending on which version you take, in neither one does Rue stop Katniss from using the deadly wasps against the Careers. Not to mention, Rue helps Katniss destroy the Careers' food and supplies in both versions. All of these actions point to someone who may not directly attack other Tributes, but sees the necessity in doing these things for survival in the Games.
