RESERVATIONS WILL REMAIN OPEN FOR A LONGER PERIOD.
MAY APPLICATION CYCLE WILL BE POSTED HERE AS SOON AS IT IS DETERMINED.
We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.
In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.
You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.
Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.
If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.
Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.
We now have a test drive community athaventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.
While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

» Jion is from a vaguely ruined alternate-Earth, where World War III has already come and gone. Most of the world is still picking itself up after the damage wrought by WWIII, and has transitioned into the final stages of recovery. The United States is still caught up in some minor skirmishes in Eastern Europe, specifically in the South Caucasus states, but is otherwise focused on rebuilding the economy and transitioning from a more militant war-time government to something with more peaceful priorities. Technology has advanced, but with focuses mostly on wartime technology and bio-engineering.
» Sixteen years ago. Jion is brought into existence. He's the product of a military-funded experiment that was started before the outbreak of WWIII and picked up its pace near the end of the war.
» Created from genetic material derived from anonymous military-associated donors, Jion is conceived in a test tube in some laboratory out in the barren wasteland of the American mid-West. Not just him, though. Jion and several hundred other genetically-engineered humans are created at the same time as part of the military's ambitious Project Planaria -- an attempt to push regenerative medicine to its limits. The human embryos are modified to share key genetic sequences with planaria in order to facilitate super-rapid cell regeneration in case of injury. Extensive testing using rats and guinea pigs have been successful in creating specimens capable of recovering from massive amounts of damage, and this stage of the project aims to create humans with that same capability. Hopefully, Project Planaria will yield several hundred super-soldiers capable of recovering from virtually any injury. These soldiers would be huge assets in cleaning up the last few conflicts persisting in Eastern Europe.
» Unfortunately, the promising compatibility between flatworms and rodents doesn't equate to compatibility between flatworms and humans. The first batch of embryos fails almost in its entirety, yielding only twenty-something successful specimens. The second batch of embryos created in an attempt to salvage the project doesn't fare any better. Furthermore, the thirty-something children who transition safely from test-tube baby to infancy don't display any signs of rapid regeneration. Any additional funding to the project is immediately put on hold, especially given the strains on the national economy due to post-war recovery. The resulting children from the experiment are tentatively raised in a laboratory environment -- the plan goes that they will be closely observed until they hit the age of 18, then will be enlisted into the military as normal persons.
» For nine, ten years, the children of Project Planaria seem to be perfectly average humans. However, when the children enter their early teens, they suddenly start showing symptoms of rapid regeneration. The boys first, and then the girls.
» Jion -- one of the children from the second batch of specimens, average among his peers in every way -- is one of the first children to show signs of regeneration. At age eleven, he wakes up one day plagued with absolutely crippling pains in his abdomen and chest. Though the lab technicians first dismiss his symptoms as the beginnings of your garden variety stomach flu, a physical examination reveals that his chest and abdominal cavities are packed to bursting with extraneous scraps of flash, teratomas, two extra kidneys and an extra lung. He's rushed into surgery and "fixed," after which the scientists begin questioning and prodding at him to figure out exactly what is going on.
» It turns out that the children show similarities to planaria only after they hit puberty. Furthermore, their regeneration turns out to be terrible flawed. Their bodies produce far too many stem cells that uncontrollably differentiate into varying other types of cells, causing their bodies to produce mass amounts of extra internal organs, bones, muscle tissue and teratomas. In fact, their bodies produce extra components rapidly enough that, if they go too long without surgical intervention, the resulting pressure in their bodies can cause tremendous harm to themselves, or even death. Not to mention, the constant rapid regeneration also causes the children to age extremely quickly, roughly four times that of a normal person.
» There's a mad scramble as the scientists leading the project try to decide what to do. Obviously, these specimens are not fit for military duty given their flawed regeneration and need for constant surgery. But even worse, with the long gestation period and high cost of production, any specimen that dies as a combatant would equate to huge financial losses. So, after much debate, Project Planaria personnel decide to relegate these specimens as combat medics, instead.
» So Jion, at twelve years of age and rapidly coming to realize that he's not exactly a normal human being, is placed in a crash course in military medicine.
» Taken out of the military-lab compound where he's spent most of his childhood, Jion spends the next year and a half being put through an intense training regimen, learning the ins and outs of working as a combat medic. Though not an especially bright individual, Jion's accelerated physical and mental growth allow him to absorb information like a sponge, and he passes all tests with flying colors.
» Immediately afterwards, he's shipped out to action overseas. Jion is technically thirteen years old. Physically, he's about eighteen. Mentally ... it's hard to tell.
» Products of Project Planaria are often given drastically unconventional tasks due to their capabilities: providing emergency care under fire in highest-risk situations given their ability to work even while taking heavy damage; helping evacuate individuals from hazardous locations; serving as blood donors on the spot due to their ability to rapidly produce large quantities of blood every day; and -- in the most drastic cases -- serving as emergency organ farms for gravely injured soldiers. It's a tough job.
» Though Jion quickly earns a reputation for being efficient and easy to work with, agreeable and always willing to lend a hand when needed, he's never really integrated into any battalion, either. Though technically ranked a specialist, he only knows to follows orders and save people's lives, no matter what it takes; ranks are irrelevant to him. His squadmates often don't know how to treat him due to his status as "one of those weird blood-tanks," and he's too often shipped to other locations before he can really come to know anyone.
» His lifestyle isn't particularly cruel or demeaning. He gets a healthy paycheck to his name that he can spend however he likes. Nobody dares disrespect him due to his special status. He's treated nicely between skirmishes, and a lot of people appreciate what he does. He's saved lots of lives. But -- it's undeniably a somewhat lonely way of living.
» Jion spends two and a half years being shuttled from battlefield to battlefield in Eastern Europe, given only brief breaks in between deployments, when he's made to return to his old laboratory-compound home for medical checkups and observation.
» And it's during one of those breaks that he ends up meeting with one of the other children he grew up with back at the military-lab compound -- a specimen from a different project, a girl named Melody. Unlike him, Melody is a soldier proper, created with abnormally good reflexes and dense muscle mass, usually deployed for infiltration purposes due to her small size. Though Jion's always known that he and his fellow experiment specimen were created as tools of war in the first place, it somehow disturbs him greatly to see Melody actually serving as a soldier.
» Though he's never really questioned his life before, seeing his friend's situation makes him start to hesitate. Life serving as a glorified lab rat's all he's ever known, and he's thought that he'd be okay with it. But ... then again, maybe not. He wants his friend, at least, to have a nicer life. And if she does, he wants to as well.
» He's soon deployed once more (Armenia, this time), and he performs his duties well, of course. He's still a combat medic, and he'll do his best to help as many people as he possibly can. But at the same time, he starts thinking, considering, planning. Maybe, the next time he's returned to the lab compound, he can find an escape route. Maybe, if he can meet up with Melody there, they can run away together. Technically, they're both military property, and life as civilians would be impossible while the war is still going on; something that's incredibly unlikely to happen in their projected (very short) lifespans. But maybe ... they can run away and try living a normal life. He'd like to try that. It sounds kinda nice, escaping to a quiet city somewhere and living like a normal person. The thought of 'a normal life' becomes something that he looks forward to and hopes for. Something that keeps him going whenever circumstances are tough.
» Jion Haru, age 16 (physical age roughly 28), falls asleep in his tent one night like he always does after a long day of hard work -- and wakes up in a strange place called Haven.

Jion Haru is, for the most part, the kind of guy that you get along with but don't always remember afterward.
He responds promptly when spoken to, chipper and eager to talk. Laughs easily with the sort of goofy, undignified laugh that's a little embarrassing, but isn't necessarily bad to witness. Likes to spend his time lounging around munching on snacks and watching TV when he's allowed to, but works hard when he's on duty. Grows flustered easily when people poke fun at him, but doesn't hold it against them, either. Sweet, unassuming and good-natured. A little shy around girls. But friendly and low-maintenance. As hard-working as he needs to be.
And he's good at his job. As a medic, Jion is very much of the belief that no one ever deserves to suffer. He's used to seeing people die, and he's been taught that some situations just can't be resolved without conflict -- but no one ever deserves to be in pain. Any person who's injured or in pain deserves to be cared for, no matter who they are, and Jion will always try his absolute hardest to provide that care to the best of his abilities. He takes pride in his job as a medic, and he likes to see people pull back from the brink of death. Loves to see people recover from their injuries. He cares about pretty much everyone by default, enemy or not.
Not that he's a perfect guy, of course. Once you get past his technical knowledge and his trained dexterity, he's really about as graceful as you'd expect from a teenager: a little thoughtless, a little awkward, a little bit clueless about what he's doing with his life. While not particularly irresponsible or emotional or rebellious, Jion does tend to be a bit impulsive. If something sounds like a good idea, he'll move to work on it immediately, and if something sounds like a bad idea from the beginning, he'll promptly reject it. He's just as quick to blurt things out thoughtlessly at times, especially when speaking to people he doesn't know well, stumbling over his own thoughts when under pressure. Awkward in the way that a teenager doesn't quite know how to handle stressful social situations, Jion is the kind of guy who always tries his best but doesn't quite make the mark a lot of the time.
A good kid, basically, with as much emphasis on 'kid' as there is on 'good.' He comes across as pretty well-adjusted and likable, especially considering the weird circumstances he grew up in.
Right up until you pull him out of familiar territory. Then he starts falling apart like a wet cake.
The underlying problem is that Jion is incredibly inexperienced in a lot of ways. Having grown up in that laboratory, then immediately shuffled into life as a walking organ farm, Jion knows very little about normal life other than what he's seen on television. (Which is why he likes watching television and movies so much. Gives him a glimpse of what a normal, quiet life might be like.)
Most notable is the fact that Jion is almost entirely lacking in direction. So used to taking orders from people -- go here, do this, stitch up these wounds, take care of this person -- Jion tends to flounder immediately when he isn't given an obvious goal to aim for. While it's not necessary to micromanage him once he's been given a task, he does function best when pointed in a specific direction and told to head that way. And he's not especially picky about who gives what orders, either. Because he's sort of been herded along one specific path for the entirety of his life, Jion isn't the greatest at discerning who can be trusted and who can't; for the most part, if someone seems reasonable and higher-ranked than him, he'll assume that they know what they're doing (at least, better than he does), and do as he's told.
He lacks long-term confidence in himself. He knows he can sew up a wound incredibly well, but anything grander in scale than 'take care of the people here' tends to make him sweat and stress out and second-guess himself.
Also of note is the fact that Jion tends to have skewed priorities when it comes to taking care of himself, at least from the viewpoint of a normal person. Years of serving as a convenient blood-and-organ-farm have resulted in an incredibly blasé attitude towards his physical safety, and Jion would think very little about carving his body up when ordered to, even on a whim. The price he pays for his nigh-invulnerability is incredibly fast aging, after all, and scientists have told him that he's expected to be retired by his mid-20's, and probably dead before he hits 30. It's knowledge that Jion doesn't really know what to do with. Part of him tends to be especially reckless because of it -- thinking that it would be better to die actually doing something than it would be die of "old age" at 30. Though he's not immune to pain, he'll walk into gunfire without hesitation if told to.
But another, smaller part of him dreams of getting a chance to live a "normal life" before he dies.
As a result, Jion tends to be very curious about unexpected things. Cooking, for example. And finances. Fashion. How to organize a house. Riding a bicycle. Normal little things. Whenever he has the chance, he likes learning about new things, and he'd like to experience those things if he can, so long as it won't get him in trouble. And he'd like to meet new people, too. People not involved in the army. People who live completely different lives from what he knows about. As awkward and thoughtless and flustered as he tends to get when talking to strangers, he's never insincere, and there's sometimes the sickly undercurrent of something resembling desperation -- a desire to be liked and remembered.
Though he's unlikely to ever admit to it, Jion's biggest fear is being completely forgotten, living a short and meaningless life before expiring. He doesn't really have a family, after all; neither does he have many friends. He's lived his life so far only ever doing what he's told, and he's never really imagined himself living a different lifestyle so far. But -- it might be nice to deviate from what he's known so far, just a little bit at a time.
Long story short, Jion is basically a kid who's grown up far too quickly, both literally and figuratively. And it's been okay, really. He's not too choked up about what he's been through. The question is whether he'll ever get to break out of that mold or not.

» HYPER-RAPID CELL REGENERATION | Between the planarian DNA implanted in his genetic sequence and some additional specific genetic tweaking, Jion's body creates new cells at a frightening pace and recovers from injuries incredibly quickly. Deep puncture wounds close up entirely within an hour, and a carved-out kidney can be replenished overnight. Though he wouldn't be able to regrow any severed limbs, his body can repair a damaged limb even if it's been carved down to mere bone and scraps of flesh. His own body has adapted to using two extra hearts and an extra set of lungs, but also tends to generate any combination of extra organs on a regular basis. This doesn't means Jion is invincible -- a clean shot through the skull that scrambles his brain would kill him instantly, as would a large-bore shot through the chest that might ruin all of his hearts. But the main thing is that Jion is pretty hard to kill and can shake off most injuries without difficulty.
» MODERATE RESISTANCE TO PAIN | Though Jion does still feel pain, he's suffered through enough injuries that he's grown somewhat immune to lower levels of pain, and can easily keep operating with a broken leg or a few puncture wounds. He's especially accustomed to having his chest and abdominal cavities sliced open, and feels incredibly little pain from that specific procedure, which allows him to handily operate on himself, solo, without the aid of any painkillers. Still, anything that breaks more than a few bones will be enough to take him out of commission until his body recovers.
» PORTABLE ORGAN FARM | Jion's main schtick is that he functions as a convenient, portable blood-and-organ farm.
He regenerates blood rapidly enough that he can lose up to five batches of 500mL (a total 2.5L, about 50% of an average person's blood volume) daily as long as he has a little breathing room in between batches. The fact that he's a type O Rh D negative "universal donor" means he can donate to just about anyone in an emergency situation. He's naturally got an incredibly powerful immune system and has also been built to withstand most diseases, making him reliably "clean."
Though it's a bit more tedious than serving as a blood donor, Jion can also work as a portable organ-tank, containing organs available for transplantation at any time. Of course, there's always the risk of the recipient's body rejecting the transplant -- but because there's nothing being wasted when Jion uses his own organs in a transplant, he's often used as an emergency "stop gap" until his patients can be put through a more formal transplant procedure. Any organs that lie within the chest and abdominal cavity are fair game, and he's very accustomed to ripping them out of himself.
» REGULAR EXCAVATIONS AND TERATOMAS | The downside of Jion's rapid cell production is that he can't control how quickly his body produces extra bits. Though he's fortunate in that the rapid growth of his cells doesn't start producing extra limbs that sprout off of him (yet), Jion does have to "excavate" his body on a weekly basis -- slicing himself open from collarbone to navel in order to remove a number of extra internal organs. Neglecting to do so builds up a lot of pressure in his body, resulting in awful gut and chest pains and difficulty breathing. Excavated organs and tissues are stored for future transplants if there's an available facility nearby, or are incinerated like standard biological waste.
He also has to bleed himself out every other day if he hasn't given any blood those days. This usually consists of cutting a vein in his arm and sitting in the bathtub for a bit. Neglecting to do so tends to make him very dizzy and nauseous from the buildup of incredibly high blood pressure.
Furthermore, Jion's body tends to periodically produce teratomas mixed in with functional organs -- which can often to be very painful if they contain teeth or bones that dig into his necessary organs. Luckily, these have grown less frequent as he grows older, but he does sometimes have to conduct emergency surgery on himself to remove them. His body is marked with a permanent Y-shaped autopsy-style scar due to how regularly he makes that incision.
» PLAYING DOCTOR | All that gruesome nonsense aside, Jion's a pretty competent combat medic. Though not as good as a proper doctor, he's capable of conducting most first aid and trauma care procedures. He's pretty good with his hands and can deal with most injuries without too much difficulty; he's also got experience helping out with some organ transplants, though he tends to prioritize speed over finesse since it's usually done just off the battlefield, while there's still fighting going on. A little rough around the edges but flexible and capable, basically.
» NOT A COMBATANT | In terms of combat, Jion's a pretty unimpressive guy. He knows the basics of how to use a handgun -- his aim's just sort of okay -- but he's not any better at fighting than your average civilian. In fact, he's probably a little worse than the average civilian, since he's so used to absorbing any injuries instead of trying to protect himself.
Items/Weapons:
0. His outfit: khaki slacks, a thin black v-neck T-shirt, a thick gray turtleneck sweater, an army-style jacket (old and worn), and comfortable boots.
1. A basic field surgical kit. A little worn with use.
2. A surgical stapler. Also a little worn with use.
3. A box containing twelve staple cartridges. Unopened.
Sample Entry:
video.
[ the video feed flickers on, showing a face peering way, way too close into the camera, squinting at it curiously. it takes jion a moment to realize that it's recording and pull back, gingerly moving his hands away from where he's set the device down on a table and sitting back in his chair. he smiles at the camera, but his smile has the distinct edge of something nervous and awkward about it. ]
Um, hello. This isn't anything important but uh -- ... no, wait. I guess I should introduce myself. My name's Jion. I'm one of the people working at the clinic so I guess I might have have met some people before.
But uh, basically. I wanted to ask that, for people who often go to Haven North ... or East? I guess also East. That if you happen to find any sort of stapler, I'd really appreciate the chance to trade for it. A staple gun would be the best, but just a normal one would be okay, too. With staples, please.
And uh, what to trade for it ...
[ an uneasy pause while he scratches at the back of his head. ]
... manual labor? I'm also really good at sewing, so maybe I can fix stuff for you? Or food. I'd offer clinic services but I'd do that anyway even without a trade so I guess that's kinda pointless. But, I'll find something. Ah, this isn't that high priority, though! Just personal use. So ... I guess if they're hard to find, then never mind.
[ another awkward pause before he sits up straighter. ]
Anyway, yeah. That's what I wanted to say.
As always, the clinic's available for anyone injured, so please stop by if there's any trouble. The people here are really good, and they'll do their best. And me too, I'll try hard. So -- don't let any injuries go untended. Infections aren't fun! Especially in a place like this. Thanks.
Sample Entry Two:
Jion bursts out of the subway station in Haven North at a hard sprint, practically tripping over his own feet as he clambers up the stairs, coming to a stop only when he finally trips over a piece of debris and hits the pavement with a breathless oomph. He lies on the pavement in a pile for five, ten seconds before slowly dragging himself back onto his feet, staring back at the trail of blood he's left behind him, each damp, red footprint still glimmering faintly. His shoulders and back are littered with gashes, a monster's taken a big bite out of his calf, and his pants leg is soaked in blood, but that's okay; Jion straightens up, glancing only briefly at his injuries, before looking around at his surroundings.
This is it. Haven North. He's heard a lot about this place, but he's never been here before. Not until now. It had taken him a long time to screw up the courage to try making the run through the subway tunnels.
And sure, he could have easily asked one of the many people capable of fighting to escort him through those dangerous tunnels, but ... he kind of wanted to try it on his own. It sends a strange thrill down his spine, knowing that he's managed to make his way here by himself.
"... cool." A low mumble under his breath as he dusts off his clothes. Where should he go first? The library? That weird looking fun-fair over there? Or maybe he should look for supplies? He has no idea where to start, but he does look back the way he's come, staring into the murky darkness of the subway station, and grins to himself. "... I did it." There's still a faint pang of something ... guilty? Or a little bit nervous at the back of his mind. The vague worry that he's done something he's not allowed to, that he doesn't have the authorization to do, but it's squelched by the excitement of having attempted something new, and he pumps his fist with a soft yesss! under his breath.
The blood seeping from his mangled leg's already started to slow, and Jion grins as he heads off towards -- somewhere. Nowhere specific. Anywhere here's okay. This should be interesting!
