Applications Three

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
RESERVATIONS ARE OPENED!

NOTE: APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED OR PROCESSED FOR APRIL, DUE TO A CURRENT DISCUSSION ON THE GAME'S FUTURE.
RESERVATIONS WILL REMAIN OPEN FOR A LONGER PERIOD.
MAY APPLICATION CYCLE WILL BE POSTED HERE AS SOON AS IT IS DETERMINED.

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every application round, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Applications are open on a monthly cycle, where they will be opened on the second Friday of every month for a week, and then processed on the third Friday of the month, before being closed again.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old. As of November 22nd 2014, samples cannot be "where am I" intro posts. The reason for this is that we often find it hard to gauge characterization from those, as most people when immediately in a new surrounding are confused or frightened.

While we encourage players who have dropped to re-join us, we do not encourage the continual rapid dropping and re-apping of the same character in a short time period. You are welcome to request specific housing, and all attempts will be made to accommodate that request, but it may not always be possible.

Sample Entry:
[The flint wheel of a lighter clicks and a small flame spews forth. There’s a muffled cough as fingers bring a cigarette to the fire, and then immediately to his mouth. He takes a drag, and then speaks, almost hesitantly:]

This is my last one.

[Before anyone can register any hint of hesitation in those words, he speaks again, this time far more boisterous:]

I don’t have any more cigarettes! JOTARO! Hey, Jotaro!! Can you hear me? D’you have any cigs for me to borrow? I kinda went through all the ones I brought already, and you’ve been here a while, so you’ve gotta have some extras. Help a pal out!

[He takes another drag, a long sigh following behind. Hopefully this cigarette will last long enough…]

Sample Entry Two:
It had been a day since the fight with Alessi and Set. Polnareff had tried to keep the battle out of his mind, but doing so had proven difficult; however, he knew that there were more enemy Stand users to face, and probably very soon, so he took to thinking about other things whenever he began to recollect. Problem was, if he didn’t think about that fight, he tended to think about something relatively asinine, such as whether the next bathroom he’d have to use was clean enough or not. He didn’t believe that was an asinine thought, but everyone else seemed to. It didn’t make much sense to him, though, since using a dirty bathroom was equivalent to eating off of a dirty plate, you just didn’t do it.

That evening proved to test that equivalency, despite all protests from Silver Chariot’s wielder; the group, sans Kakyoin, were to board a ship to Cairo in an effort to continue their journey, which was nothing too out of the ordinary. What was out of the ordinary, though, was how filthy the lone toilet on the ship was. It looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in months, what with an unidentifiable crust caked on the porcelain and all.

He wasn’t using it, there was no way he would be able to use it. At least, he wasn’t going to use it in this state. Someone had to clean it. Polnareff wasn’t the type to really clean things himself, though, so after debating in his mind who to bother about this dire predicament, he placed a name to the task: Avdol.

“Hey, Avdol! Come check out this toilet! It’s really interesting!”

This would definitely work, he just needed to convince Avdol to clean the toilet somehow and then he’d be able to actually go. The plus side being that he wouldn’t have to do the dirty work himself, which would make using the toilet that much more satisfying. He simply remained outside the bathroom door, waiting for his unsuspecting friend to arrive.

Sorry about that! I hope this is better. Also, I feel like a doofus, but I meant to request Polnareff to be placed in any apartment in housing block 13, so he can pester be near some of his friends.
Thank you so much!

There are many different aspects to Jean Pierre Polnareff’s personality. Some of these aspects are somewhat obvious given his outlandish appearance, while others are a bit unconventional and unexpected.

To begin with the more obvious, Polnareff has a big mouth. This has gotten him in trouble several times in the series, as most everyone else on the team seems to know when to be quiet. In fact, it doesn’t take long for the group to realize that while well-intentioned, Polnareff can’t keep a secret to save his life. This is proven when Avdol appears to die early on in the series to Hol Horse; Polnareff thinks that he’s dead from being shot, but he actually survived the bullet. Joseph, Jotaro, and Kakyoin knew this not long after Avdol fell, but Polnareff had no idea. In fact, he was distraught over his friend’s apparent passing and nearly lost his head during the remainder of Hol Horse’s battle. After arriving to an isolated island and discovering Avdol was alive the entire time, it was explained that everyone kept Avdol’s status mum from Polnareff since he would have spilled the information out to the enemy without realizing. Polnareff’s outbursts are usually not well thought out, and oftentimes are seen as a nuisance.

Polnareff is also easily distracted, and he has an eye for women. Upon seeing one, he momentarily forgets about his mission to find Dio, and instead moves to flirt. This is seen at least once in the anime, and Joseph has to tell him to stop. Polnareff, to no surprise, complains when he has to move on and go with the team to their next destination. Another example of this is when he goes to look at the enemy Stand user Midler (after Jotaro’s Star Platinum punches her teeth in) to see if she’s attractive, since she attempted to flirt with Jotaro at the beginning of their battle. To put it simply, if Polnareff senses a cute lady around, he’s going to stop what he’s doing and check her out, even if she might be an enemy.

There’s an odd discrepancy with Polnareff and cleanliness. The man has a strange fascination with clean toilets, though being forced to lick a dirty one under enemy Stand user Enya’s hold could be a strong factor toward this. He often comments about how clean or dirty a toilet is once the group arrives to a new place, and when they all arrive to Egypt, Joseph even states that “even though he’s not Polnareff, he can’t use this bathroom” in reference to a toilet in the sand with no water. Basically, everyone knows that Polnareff is particular about clean bathrooms. Alternatively, Polnareff seems to not care about food cleanliness. During the episode with Oingo and Boingo, Oingo disguises himself to look like Jotaro, which fools both Polnareff and Joseph. Polnareff finds a dirty orange, also under disguise (as a bomb) but has no qualms about wanting to eat it. This conflicts with desiring a clean toilet, since one would think he’d want clean food as well.

Not every aspect of Polnareff’s personality is negative or strange, however. He’s dedicated; when the team frees him of Dio’s grasp, he announces that he’s on the search for his sister Sherry’s killer. He doesn’t stop searching for the man until he dies, and even then, Polnareff isn’t completely satisfied. The closure doesn’t occur until after Polnareff wishes for Sherry to come back upon the discovery of a ‘genie’s lamp’. (He also wishes for Avdol to be brought back, as he believed he was dead at the time.) This closure comes after a very emotional moment between himself and Sherry’s doppleganger, of whom is not spotted as a fake for a while, given Polnareff’s tinge of naivety. While Polnareff’s personality seems a bit conceited and boisterous on the surface, deep down there’s a decent portion of selflessness, as he didn’t need to wish for his loved ones to come back to life, but he did. He also wished for a girlfriend, which is conceited, but nobody’s perfect!

As a teammate, Polnareff is a challenge. Sure, he’s helpful, and he knows how to use Chariot well, but there are times when he decides to do his own thing for a while. A prime example of this is when he is tasked with delivering Anubis to the local police, but instead he decides to get a shave at a barbershop. Jotaro, being dragged along with him, has to sit and wait; he even comments that they need to take Anubis to the police, but Polnareff says he needs a break. This would be fine, except that Anubis ends up taking over the mind of the barber, and an obvious battle breaks out. There are several battles that could have been avoided if Polnareff didn’t succumb to his own superficial needs first, but the series wouldn’t be nearly as entertaining that way.

The group Polnareff travels with is pretty much a second family to him. He’s close to everyone, save for Iggy the dog, although one could argue that he and the pup do have a relationship (though it primarily consists of Iggy passing gas on his face and messing up his hair). Out of the team, Polnareff is probably closest to Avdol and Kakyoin, though he obviously connects with Jotaro as well:

Avdol:
Avdol, being the member of the group to fight Polnareff whilst under Dio’s control, ends up developing a sort of complicated relationship with him. Polnareff argues with Avdol several times during the course of the series, since their personalities differ so much; though, once Avdol ‘dies,’ Polnareff immediately mourns the loss of him, which he wouldn’t have done if he didn’t care.

Kakyoin:
Kakyoin and Polnareff are friends, and this is obvious since Kakyoin was the one to convince Polnareff to not act rash upon witnessing Avdol’s ‘death.’ If he and Polnareff weren’t close, this gesture probably wouldn’t have worked as well as it had. The two are also seen performing a ‘secret’ handshake together before the High Priestess fight on the journey to Egypt, proving that they’ve bonded a bit outside of the main story. Once Kakyoin suffers a grave wound from N’doul, Polnareff tells Jotaro and Joseph that he’s worried for the young man, potentially due to the fact that he refused to check the water canteen N’doul was possessing, even though Kakyoin told him to. Polnareff could very well have been the one to receive the injury, so his worry for his friend may be fueled by a bit of guilt.

Jotaro:
Jotaro can be considered a friend as well, to a degree, as he and Polnareff both smoke, and Polnareff has mentioned Jotaro’s ability to swallow several lit cigarettes at once. During the second portion of the Anubis fight, Polnareff becomes possessed by the enemy Stand, and Jotaro has to fight him. He hesitates for a while, in worry that he’ll have to kill his friend. This goes both ways. Polnareff apologizes as soon as he’s free from Anubis’ grasp, and immediately offers to give Jotaro a band-aid for his wounds.

In short, Polnareff isn’t a bad person, but he has skewed motivations sometimes. He cares for those close to him, as proven when he thinks Avdol is dead, and when he expresses concern over Kakyoin receiving a gruesome injury from N’doul. When the situation calls for it (such as the first Anubis fight) he can be serious and powerful, but he definitely has a child-like demeanor when his basic needs aren’t met to his satisfaction, as he requires a clean bathroom and a hearty breakfast.

He’s definitely more complicated than he looks!
