APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN! The next processing date is Friday 11th October
IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE
We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.
In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.
You may apply for two characters every two weeks, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.
Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. If you wish to request a specific apartment, please do so in the relevant part of the application. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.
If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.
Every attempt will be made to place a character in their chosen apartments, though this may not always be possible depending on the slots available.
Applications are open constantly, but are only processed every other Friday at 7PM EST. The Saturday following acceptance, an IC mingle log will be posted for characters to be introduced to the game.
We now have a test drive community at haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old.
Name: Furu Contact Info: kismesis [at] gmail [dot] com Other Characters Played: Malik Al'Sayf Preferred Apartment: None! Character Name: Bolin Canon: AtLA: The Legend of Korra Canon Point: Episode 4! Background/History:http://avatar.wikia.com/wiki/Bolin Previous Game History:
Bolin was in Discedo for three months, and his time there really affected him. For one, he was completely alone. During his time there, his brother and friends never showed up, and since he usually relied on Mako to take care of him and be there for him, he had to deal with not only his brother--the one person who had figuratively never left his side--not being there with him, but also had to learn how to fend for himself. He'd lived on the streets before, but Mako had always been there to guide and take care of him, and had done a lot of the actual fending. So needless to say, Bolin got used to the idea that he would never see his brother again, and had to adjust to life without bending.
Speaking of bending! Another big thing that affected him in his time at Discedo was the chip--a small device that was implanted in him, suppressing his abilities. He was never able to get it out, and so he lived three months without being able to defend himself in the way he was able to back home. Not only that, but he was unable to do something that had, at one time, been completely natural and easy. It was a change that was difficult to adjust to.
Bolin is essentially the same guy he was. He didn't spend enough time in Discedo to become jaded, but he learned and had to overcome a lot of obstacles, and is a lot more street-smart because of it. Also, due to the nature of Discedo, Bolin will be extremely wary of Haven, thinking it another trick of the Scientists. He had to deal with getting his mind messed with a few times, after all. (He forgot Mako at one point, and thought he was Shizuo's brother, and had come from his world. It was awk for both of them, when they finally came to their senses.).
Also! He's got a scar on his arm where he was attacked by a monster.
Personality:
Bolin is someone who is completely comfortable with who he is. He's not insecure, he takes his weaknesses in stride, and he acknowledges his good points. He's not vain, in any sense of the word, as he's not one to go and gloat about himself--except maybe to mako, if the subject were to come up--because he's a good person who thinks of others just as much as he thinks of himself. A great example of him being comfortable with who he is, and taking his weaknesses in stride is when he's rescued from Amon. Most guys? They would probably be embarrassed at having been saved by a girl. Or...just saved in general. Bolin, though? It doesn't phase him. He heartily thanks Korra, and admits to the situation having been scary.
Despite having lived a hard life--losing his parents at a young age, and living on the streets with very little/no money--Bolin still manages to keep a smile on his face in most situations. He's easy-going and laid-back, taking things in stride and being a generally bro-tastic dude. When things get tough, he somehow manages to bounce back quickly and remain cheerful and optimistic. This tends to make him slightly naive in a way, however, and it's very obvious he depends on his brother's opinion on how he should react to the world around him. An example:
Shady Shin:So listen. I got an offer for you. Lightning Bolt Zolt is looking to hire some extra muscle.
Bolin:Uh, I don't know, Shin. Mako told to stay away from the Triple Threats.
He's not relying on his own opinion of the Triple Threat Triads--though he probably doesn't think too highly of them--he's relying on what Mako told him not to do. He constantly goes to Mako for advice, and puts his brothers opinion first in most instances. That's not to say he won't do things for himself--he goes with Shady Shin, in hopes of being able to raise some money, and he asks Korra out despite what Mako says on the matter--he just values his brothers opinion, and considering the trouble he manages to get himself into, Mako's street-smarts are something he definitely relies on.
Bolin is definitely a team-player. He works well with others, and if the team is hurting in some area, he'll step in and do what he think is best for the team. While he may be a professional fighter, Bolin is actually quite non-confrontational outside of an actual fight. He would rather avoid a fight than go at someone head on--as seen in the restaurant with Korra. He kept his head down and was perfectly content with keeping to himself. Outside of that, He's got a sense of humor he isn't afraid to use, though it's a more innocent humor. He's not one to pull pranks or make jokes at the expense of others.
While not a lot bothers Bolin, and he bounces back from things relatively quickly, when things do upset him, he'll fall apart rather quickly. He doesn't seem to handle 'betrayal' very well, and when he sees Mako and Korra kissing, he cries, runs away, and goes to figuratively drown himself in noodles. In this state he acts like a little kid who didn't get his way, to the point where Mako had to physically drag him out of the restaurant while Bolin kicked and sobbed. It also affected his ability to work with his team, and they nearly lost because of it. However, despite the effect it had on him, after their near-loss, Bolin forgives his brother and Korra. Which shows a lot about him as a person, and the strong brotherly-bond him and Mako share. He's forgiving, and kind, and just an all-around good guy.
Lastly, depending on the situation, Bolin can go from modest and polite to excitable and talkative. More formal settings, on dates, or when facing serious trouble, he becomes polite and...well, modest. When he burps he seems to be somewhat embarrassed, though that quickly changes when Korra herself starts burping. Really, it depends on the situation. Around friends and his brother? He's himself. Excitable, energetic, and talkative--though he's no wordsmith, and he doesn't speak as eloquently as some do.
All in all he's a laid-back guy with a heart of gold. He thinks of others, and does his best for his team. Though he is still a teen, and he does have his moments of despair--however, these moments are brief, and he's quick to bounce back from them.
Abilities/Powers:
Bolin's abilities are pretty straight forward! He's an Earthbender, which means he's able to manipulate the earth and shape it to his will. Throwing disks, making walls of earth--these are just a few of the things Earthbenders can do. His style of Earthbending is slightly different from, say, Toph's style. It's more 'light on his feet', adapted specifically for Pro-bending. So unlike Toph, who has a very unmovable, solid stance, Bolin is quick on his feet, which makes for quick and easy movement in the midst of a fight.
When he wakes up, his first thought is that it’s some prank. A practical joke? But this didn’t…seem like something anyone he knew would do. Besides, he didn’t recognize the area. It didn’t even look like it belonged anywhere near Republic City. Sure, there were some less-than-savory places around town, but this was….this was bad.
Was it Amon and his Chi-blocking lackeys?
He doubts it. Even that seems a little far-fetched.
He looks around; trying to shake the feeling something was wrong--off about it all. Something subtle that he couldn’t seem to put his finger on. It was more than just the bleak change of scenery, or the weird little device telling him to ‘use’ it, or the fact his brother, the only person he had left, was nowhere in sight. No, it was something else…and it was bugging him to no end. What was wrong…?
There’s a rustling behind him, and the knocking over of trash cans as something moves in his direction. He manages to turn in time to see some freak of nature—a monster? It wasn’t any animal he’s seen before—leaping at him, claws and fangs aimed and heading right for him. Bolin quickly moves into a stance, ready to knock it back with some killer bending--
Only the Earth doesn't move. His bending doesn’t work, and there’s a horrible moment of dread as time seems to slow down, the monster closing in---and he couldn't bend. He couldn’t get away in time.
Teeth sink into the arm that had come up in defense—and while it was a weak protection against the animal, it was all he had. There was pain, and at that pain Bolin rushes into action, pushing the animal away and stumbling back a moment before he turns to run.
--“No, no this can’t be happening. What is—“ What is even going on?
I do have a question: Would the chip still work within Haven's setting? Or would that be something removed from within him upon arrival?

Name: Chris Contact Info: Plurk: illuminatesound AIM: illuminatesound Other Characters Played: N/A Preferred Apartment: If Soul could room with the Maka being apped that would be awesome. We've talked about it and it's ok with her.
Character Name: Soul Eater Evans Canon: Soul Eater Canon Point: Post chapter 84, right after the Russia mission. Background/History:Wiki! Only the manga stuff applies.
Personality: Soul's a pretty cool guy. He eats kishin souls and doesn't afraid of anything.
But really. He's very relaxed, laid-back person. He's definitely a follower, not a leader. He's more the adviser type. Someone else might be in charge, but he won't hesitate to call them out on stupid, reckless behavior. He might not be calling the shots, but the person who is will never have to wonder what he thinks of the decisions they make. Because Soul will tell them. And he will be loud. And he will yell. And he will do what it takes to get their attention. This works... sometimes. At least, it works when it really seems to matter. Maka, for instance, is the most stubborn person he knows. Maka does what Maka wants whenever Maka wants to. She runs into situations without thinking, she listens to her heart whereas Soul listens to logic and reason. He often tells his Meister that she's doing something dumb or reckless in an effort to keep her from harm.
That is actually a very important facet of Soul. He is incredibly loyal and dedicated. He doesn't break promises, he doesn't switch sides. He is always looking out for his friends and he refuses to see them come to harm. Maka especially. He's her Weapon. It's his duty to keep her from getting hurt. It may not look like he cares about much, but under the surface, Soul is one determined kid. He protects Maka without hesitation. When she freezes, he acts for her -- putting himself in harms way to keep her safe.
Soul is able to keep himself calm and composed no matter how difficult things get. He manages to remain level-headed and think clearly, offering insight into various situations that others may have overlooked. However, he's never wordy. In fact, he's anything but. Soul is very blunt. No skirting around issues, he will tell it like it is. Which is not always what people want to hear.
For a long time he was trying to reach his own expectations of what "cool" looked and acted like and in a lot of ways he still is. Sure, he's a Death Scythe now, but that hasn't done much for his confidence or his self-esteem. He feels that without Maka, he is completely useless. He can't fight on his own and he's not strong or fast. At least not strong enough to do any good.
Despite wanting to be cool, Soul does not want to be popular. He fears emotional attachment, always keeping a bit of distance between others. He's reluctant to talk to anyone about his problems - he's tight lipped about his past and his family, not even Maka is aware that he has a brother, nor did he say a word to her when he was first infected with Black Blood about the dreams he had of the Little Ogre.
Music is very, very important to Soul even if it is a bit of a catch-22. Memories of his past, of his family, his brother revolve mostly around music and he still hasn't been able to move beyond them. Pieces that remind him of home - especially things being played on violin - tend to upset him. On the other hand, he's loves to talk about music with others, showing that he has a fondness for jazz and swing. Despite his reluctance to play for anyone, he does enjoy it and could easily stay in the music room for hours on end.
Abilities/Powers:
Weapon - Soul can physically transform himself into a scythe. He doesn’t always have to transform completely. He can turn his entire arm into a blade, or he can transform just his forearm to make fighting a bit easier. Now that he’s a Death Scythe, he can choose to have the blade come out of his arm, instead of transforming any part of the limb itself.
Noise Canceling – This power was gained after defeating the witch Arachne. Through Maka, Soul is able to sense person’s soul wavelength. Unlike his Meister who can “see” souls, he can “hear” the sound of a person’s wavelength. Using the piano in the black room he is able to produce a “reverse phrase signal” to nullify that wavelength, which directly affects a person’s abilities. Basically it’s like when something is so loud that it’s painful, but then someone is smart enough to go and turn the volume down. The ability is kind of self-explanatory once you know how Soul senses wavelengths.
Black Blood - Inside his head is this little room called the Black Room. It’s inhabited by the Little Ogre/Little Demon who was “born” when Soul was first infected with the Black Blood. Upon activation, he can connect with everyone performing Soul Resonance with him. It gives him and his partner(s) a lot of strength and power. Which is awesome, but there’s a catch. Every time he uses it he, and possibly his partner, runs the risk of falling prey to madness and as such is used only as last resort. He’s managed to get a bit of control over the insanity – drawing the strength he needs out of the Black Blood while keeping the madness in check. It’s still all pretty new to him -- he doesn’t quite know its limits, or his for that matter, and it definitely puts a strain on him. Anti-Demon Wavelength/Soul Perception - This is only possible during Soul Resonance with his Meister, Maka. The Anti-Demon wavelength protects him from insanity and Soul perception is just what it sounds like - the ability to perceive souls. As noted before, he hears them.
Piano - Soul thinks he is the worst pianist ever, but don’t listen to him because he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. By playing the piano in the Black Room, he has the ability to manipulate Soul Wavelengths by treating them as music. The longer he plays, the more he is at risk of falling deeper into insanity.
*So he can play the piano in his head. Awesome. What does it do?*
Can create a perfect Chain Resonance under impossible conditions by creating sound waves and a rhythm that all Soul Wavelengths resonating with him can follow. This makes them all much stronger and much more agile.
By increasing the tempo of the song, his team members gain more attack speed. Certain chords increase their attack strength. He can also do the opposite, making him able to slow enemies down.
Can spread Anti-Demon wavelength to others, sometimes over huge distances by using the power of Arachne’s spider webs as a medium between the piano and other people.
Form Manipulation - What it sounds like. He can change the appearance of his Weapon form.
Flight- Through Soul Resonance with Maka’s Grigori Soul, he can manifest wings in his Weapon form, allowing both him and Maka to fly.
Sharper Scythe –It does what it says on the tin. This ability makes the blade of Soul’s scythe incredibly sharp. Sharp enough to cut through objects and materials he never could under normal circumstances. He has used this ability all of once when he was possessed by black blood in his body. It is unknown if he will be able to use this ability without losing his sanity.
Dark Piano– Soul possesses the unique ability to change the blade of his scythe into a keyboard. Striking its keys sends out sound waves powerful enough to knock people off of their feet and rip into the ground. The only time he has used this ability was when he was taken over by the black blood. It’s unknown if he can use this power without losing his sanity.
“Leave me behind… I can’t fight together with you anymore. Sorry… You haven’t done anything wrong. Everything’s my fault. Just leave me behind… After all, I’m just a burden to you, aren’t I, Soul? I’m not strong. I can’t do anything on my own. ”
Those words stung more than Maka could have possibly imagined. Soul could only stand there and stare at his Meister. His Meister… just sitting there with her shoulders hunched like she was trying to carry the weight of the world. A heavy frown pulled at his lips, his brow furrowed, he clenched his fists so tight that the thin layer of skin covering his knuckles looked like it had been bleached white.
What did she see? What did she see in that last chapter that would do this to her? Maka wasn’t as strong as Black Star or Kid, but that didn’t matter to him. It never had. Why would she think that had changed? Damn it… it was this stupid book. It had to be.
“What the hell are you talking about? You're letting this stupid book influence you. It's got you feeling like you've done something wrong.,” he swallowed hard, waiting a moment to make sure his voice wouldn’t start shaking. “So don’t you go spouting nonsense because of those feelings!”
Silence. His heart raced. Maka… she couldn’t do this to him. She was better than this. “You saw something in the previous chapter too, didn’t you, Soul…?"
Soul’s breath hitched painfully in his chest, a lump forming in the back of his throat. So she’s figured him out, huh? That he’s not as great as he wants to be, as he tries to be, yearns to be. Tch, who did he think he was? Always trying to be so cool, trying to be everything he knows he’s not.
NO. No that wasn’t true. To hell with this. To hell with what this book was doing to his head. Maka wouldn’t do something stupid like this. She wouldn’t. She was different.
-----
Soul’s fingers lifted from the keys, that last chord still ringing in his ears -- broken and dissonant and something he could never really place, only knew that it hurt.
“Wonderful! Just as expected from the son of the Evans family.” The crowd applauded. Of course they would applaud. They had to be polite, didn’t they? Especially after the way they reacted to his brother’s performance.
Some of the people here could tell the difference. No, honestly there might not be anyone who could tell. But those who could tell…?
“He’s every bit the musician his older brother Wes is.” “Definitely!”
They could see, they could hear, the difference. Soul and his brother were at two completely different levels and Wes was at one that he could never hope to reach.
“Is that why you chose that girl?” Wes. It was Wes.
The voice made him freeze. His shoulders stiffened and he shoved his hands into his pockets so no one could see how tightly he was clenching his fists. Wes. So cool, so smooth, so… so… everything he could never be.
“NO!” venom dripped from the word he spat at his brother. Who the hell did he think he was? He had no right! What did Wes know? Nothing. He didn’t know anything.
"You left because you wanted to get away from music. From home…” Wes hesitated, looking Soul in the eye, “…from me. That girl doesn’t know anything about music. Do you find it easier to relax and not be jealous of me? Does it put you at ease? Well, isn’t that nice.”
No. No, no, no! It wasn’t like that with Maka! It wasn’t! Maybe at first it was. Maybe it was nice to have someone around that didn’t know who he was, who honestly wouldn’t know any better, but it wasn’t like that. He chose her... he chose her because she would never judge him for what he could or could not do. She wouldn’t laugh behind his back, wouldn’t endlessly critique his every move, every note he played. Wouldn’t sit there and make him feel like he was less of a person.
-----
“I didn’t,” a beat. One. Two. Three. Four. Four counts. One whole note. Two half notes. Four quarter notes. Eight eighth notes. Sixteen sixteenth notes. And Maka would never care. “I didn't see anything.”

Character Name: Glenn Rhee Canon: The Walking Dead (tv series) Canon Point: Finale of Season one, as they're driving away from the CDC Background/History:Wiki found here
Re: Glenn Rhee| The Walking Dead (Tv series)|Reserved
Personality: As a survivor of the American zombie outbreak, there are at least two directions people can go: bad, or good. There are people who gleefully leave their humanity behind, and take the breakdown of society as a way to give into all of the grit, the racism, the anger, and compulsions that they always wanted but never could bring themselves to do.
With Glenn, he’s the latter; he holds onto basic human decency. In the first episode, we hear it in his voice; though it seems to be taunting, he is reaching out, giving someone who has no idea that there is still people left alive in Atlanta a piece of hope. This sets the foundation for Glenn throughout the series, being the character balanced between compassion and realism.
Glenn, when given the choice, will be the first person who places himself in a dangerous situation for the welfare of the group. Most of the time he plans out his escape in advance, to ensure he makes it out alive; sometimes he'll plunge in without thinking, like driving a car with the alarm going off to lure zombies (also known as Walkers) away from the group. That’s not to say he’s not selfish in his own right— Glenn isn’t suicidal and has no desire to die. He does, however, understand that he’s the one with the best chance of survival given his skills. Glenn is not smug or arrogant about it; for him in a world where most have died due to the Walkers, it’s a hard fact that he’s survived encountering them more than the average, which makes him the one with the experience necessary to survive one more encounter. More often than not, he would express dismay at what he has to do in order to save the group; he’ll pace and grab at his hat, worried about the consequences of getting involved and not getting involved. However, that anxiety would not stop Glenn from risking himself in order to save others. This could be due to the hope that someone else would do the same for him one day, or that someone may yet one day save them all... but he’s smart enough to admit it’s probably not going to happen.
Despite Glenn and the other survivors of the group being constantly placed under stress and dangerous situations, he has yet to lose his sense of humor and enjoyment. Tense situations or not, he'll make wisecracks, light hearted insults, and jokes when he feels it's appropriate. He takes joy in the little things in life, whether it is driving a fast car or over drinking when he hasn't seen alcohol in months. Though he is aware of the dangers he faces on a daily basis, he takes what he can get from life, even if it's joking about how a fall would kill him and Rick, instead of the Walkers. Glenn is, as he puts it, "a glass half full kind of guy" ( Episode Two "Guts").
Glenn is by no means perfect, even with his altruism or undefeatable attitude. He doesn’t always speak up when he should, or when he can make a difference in an argument, and he’s not the best at making quick decisions. Glenn is known to either have two handles when he's panicking or unsure about something: he thinks logically about what’s practical for the short term, or goes into a flight or freeze mode without thinking ahead. When he doesn't think he can do anything to make things better, he hovers in the background, tending to be passive and waiting for others to act. In a group of people, Glenn is a follower and doesn’t seem to have the bravery to take up the mantle of leader.
There can be many things that can be said for Glenn, but the most important information to remember is he is an average young man in a horrible global situation. Considering what he has gone through to survive, he still possesses emotion and empathy. He has yet to cross the line, unlike many other people in his world, in killing a human being.
Re: Glenn Rhee| The Walking Dead (Tv series)|Reserved
Abilities/Powers: Glenn is a normal person in a world not unlike our own. He has many small skills that an average person would have, but he is first and foremost a supply runner. That means he is quick on his feet, can plan out his escape routes quickly and is good at hiding. He's good at finding useful items such as guns, food, or medication. Glenn is also a jack of all trades, as he can do basic car mechanics, shoot a gun, using blunt weapons, and being a scout. He's intelligent, agile, and faster than the normal person due to his background and experiences.
Though it is alluded to and not confirmed in the first season, Glenn, along with everyone in his canon, is a carrier of his world’s zombie virus. It may not be a power or ability, but it’s something to be noted. While alive, this has no effects; the virus stays dormant or inactive within the body. But when he dies, Glenn will turn into a Walker. What this means is that his body will reanimate without higher brain function, and will not stop until there is enough damage done to the brain to severe its signals to the decaying body.
As a Walker, his bite is dangerous. Bites transfer some kind of bacterial infection that spreads through the victim, causing sweating, fever, and eventually death. It is unknown if those bites spread the virus, since everyone in canon is already infected.
Sample Entry: Hey, guys?
[He doesn't sound happy. He's talking quickly, panicked even, for all that he's trying to keep his voice light]
I don't remember staying in any apartment, and I don't remember leaving the RV. Anyone else know what's going on?
[He takes a moment to glance out the window.]
Okay, I get this is supposed to be called Haven. Nice joke; I like the gas masks especially. I mean, you never know when you might need gas masks in a safe place.
But really, what's going on, and how come we have electricity?
Sample Entry Two: He could feel the fluttering in his stomach again. Nerves of course; it was always nerves. But he didn't think anything of it; he merely peered out to view what was outside. It looked like a sea of geeks; walkers, zombies, the undead, whatever people wanted to call them. They were outside of the door he had been planning to use for escape.
For a moment, he had to close his eyes, thinking. His stomach cramped. He was tempted to throw up out of pure nerves; then he steadied. There was a way; there was always a way to get out.
Glenn took one last glance to the door, ensuring that it was locked, he left it behind, the map of the building coming up in his mind. There were some other exits; he just had to find it. He adjusted his backpack, and headed the opposite direction, going upstairs.
He kept moving, up, up to the roof. Nothing here, and nothing to worry about. He nodded to himself, and started off to the other side of the roof, checking to see if there was anyone, anything on the other side. Nothing; Glenn could move freely. With a silent sigh of relief, he moved towards the next building, knowing there was a ladder on the other side. Perfect start to an escape, with more supplies. Maybe he could enjoy something better than squirrels and mushrooms breakfast as a reward.

Character Name: Tony Stark Canon: Marvel Cinematic Universe Canon Point: Right after [SPOILERS!] he drops out of the sky at the end of the Avengers movie. Background/History:Background/History:Here.
Personality:
Tony Stark is a man with armor, even outside of his Iron Man suit. There's the Tony everyone sees--the one plastered on big screens and magazine covers, the one that's a household name--and the one he lets flounder underneath all of that. The key to understanding his character is pinpointing just where one ends and the other begins.
The first persona is the immediate one-- The narcissist, the playboy, the eccentric billionaire, the celebrity, the man with an ego as large as the newest technology he just developed in his basement. It isn't a fabrication; it's Tony, pure and simple, living life the only way he knows how--plowing through it, with no plan of action outside of the immediate one. Even after he goes through his great character transformation in the first film, he's still an impulsive man, acting first and leaving a mess for everyone else to clean up later. He's blunt, flippant, and self-absorbed, but only because he relies entirely on instinct and heart to push him through one end of a situation and stumbling out the other.
The first Iron Man film showcases the profound transformation that defines his character. He goes from an attention-starved, blithely ignorant celebrity brat to a man thrust into the dirty, bullet-ridden world his legacy has created, and something quietly changes inside him. On the surface, Tony seems to care about little outside of himself and his latest project--but after this change, we come to see just how deeply he actually loathes himself and his own mark on society, and the extent to which he's willing to fight to protect the things he does care about.
Tony goes through life with a sense of blatant, determined detachment; nothing ever seems to matter to him, whether it's a hearing in front of the Senate or the fact that he's about to be shot out of the sky with a missile. This makes it incredibly difficult for many people to take him seriously, and he's regarded with ire and disrespect by peers and opponents alike. Despite this, no one can deny that Tony is a genius. Stark Industries--as much as it functions financially and bureaucratically without him--would flounder if not for his sheer technological and scientific knowlege and aptitude. Despite this, Tony seems to accept his position reluctantly-- Because when he's not basking in the attention of a million strangers or in a single pretty girl for one night, Tony is a deeply personal and solitary creature, someone who is at his happiest in his workshop in the company of his AI and an engrossing project.
There is something inherently self-destructive about Tony. In the second film he suffers from a degenerative illness brought on by the arc reactor, a device he'd (ironically) designed to preserve and prolong his life. Instead of telling his loved ones--the few that he keeps near and dear; namely Pepper Potts and James Rhodes, the only people who have seen glimpses of his vulnerable interior--he isolates himself and throws himself into his work and his mission as Iron Man. There is the desire to protect his loved ones from worrying, but it's uglier than that-- Tony courts death, plays with it, dares it to come and get him. He fights in battles with little regard to his personal safety, drinks himself into oblivion, and dives headfirst into situations much larger than he is. It's a sense of responsibility that drives him, a desire to take the reins in his own life and his own company, but also a testament to just how little he actually values himself.
This deflated sense of self-worth (made even more apparent by the way he needs to stroke his ego at every available opportunity--Stark Expo and the Tower stand out as examples) shows in his interactions with other people. In the Avengers film, he blithely talks about Nick Fury's disability ('How does Fury see these?' 'Do I look at the patch or the eye?') and has no trouble discussing Bruce Banner's transformation into the Hulk, a sensitive subject everyone else avoids. The way Tony points out people's flaws isn't to deprecate them or make himself look good; instead, it shows how little stock he puts in the flaws in people, and how he sees them instead as complete people. Though he often spends a lot of time in his own self-occupied space, he does have a caring heart. His interactions with Pepper are a testament to that; out of everyone else, she is the person who sees every angle of Tony and who thus has the most faith in him. He fails greatly at expressing affection--he once buys her strawberries, forgetting that she's allergic to them--but his efforts are what makes his actions much more meaningful. He tells Coulson that he'll 'fly him to Portland' so he can see the cellist he likes, and expresses to Bruce a genuine empathy and belief in him while everyone else seems to fear and distrust him. Despite his air of apathy, Tony honestly cares about people--perhaps too much, enough to make him shut down the instinct entirely when it threatens his public visage.
Tony operates with his own agenda, and does so entirely alone. He is, arguably, the most difficult member of the Avengers when it comes to teamwork-- His brain operates at whip-speed, to the point where it's often difficult for others to catch up, and that stretches not only in his social interactions but to the battlefield as well. Cooperating, to him, means slowing himself down to a level other people can understand, and he finds that frustrating. Tony is do do do, and slowing down enough to explain his actions is a hinderance to him. Despite this, he does learn to function with others, making him part of something unstoppable instead of a force as self-destructive as it is deadly.
Tony Stark is a flawed, incomplete, complex mess of a man, but somehow emerges from that as an essential moving part of a grander whole-- And it's that, I think, that moves him closer to growing into himself, to becoming something that's less a force of nature and something with a definitive purpose, a mission, a reason to fight and live. This all culminates at the end of the Avengers film, when Tony sacrifices himself to save New York City from a missile. This act is his defining moment as a member of the Avengers--and, essentially, a superhero.
Above all else, Tony is a mathematical, statistical, and scientific genius. His brain operates on a much higher level than most people--and that, in essence, is his superpower. He may not have super-strength or martial arts training, but his Iron Man suit is a reflection of just how his intelligence works around his lack of physical fighting capability. The suit is a streamlined, efficient weapon and stealth device--capable of flight, nearly bullet-proof, and tricked out with built-in ammunition and blasters on both palms.
Additionally, Tony's engineering expertise extends to his creation of several high-functioning A.I.--most particularly JARVIS, the sentient computer system that runs his house and powers his suit. He's also a computer genius, able to hack into high security programs and systems.
A lot of things run through Tony's head-- Like the little picture of Pepper in the corner of his eye, flickering, one steady reminder of the Earth below him, of the life that would be taken if he'd let the thing he was holding in his arms fall to the ground. Like how he'd dream of space when alone in his bed as a child, and sneak up after dark to look through a telescope and imagine a world much different than the one he was on-- One where pressure wouldn't close around him, where his father's disapproving words were a distant echo, where he could let his mind and imagination run wild and free.
This isn't that space. This is something cold and empty, stretching far beyond what he can see or comprehend, and distantly he can see whatever fortress the--(Chi-something. Chipotle? Chitauri.)--are using to deploy their forces, and thinks this is it.
Everything is cold and swallowing around him, and he lets the nuke go. Pressure builds and crushes him, breaking through his armor and turning it to pieces, and the force of the explosion buils and forces him back. It's funny, how indestructible he'd felt when he'd first put on the suit compared to now. It's no longer a shell that protects him, that shields him from the spearing eye of the public and the concern of those closest to him. Instead it's a feeble visage slowly peeling away, breaking down as he drops out of the portal like a doll.
The image of Pepper disappears and he blacks out--and the last image he has of space isn't of the stretching, sprawling world of promise he'd imagined as a kid. It's oppressive and bleak. It's horrifying.
Character Name: Rapunzel Canon: Tangled Canon Point: Shortly after she leaves the tower for the first time. Background/History:Here Personality:
Like most Disney princesses, Rapunzel is a kind-hearted individual with big dreams. Unlike most Disney princesses, she also has a whole slew of personal issues, the first and most intense of which is her relationship with her mother. Gothel has not only kept her locked up inside a tower her entire life, but also treated her like an object rather than a human being. To her mother, Rapunzel is a valuable tool that must be kept safe and in good shape. The familial love between them is entirely one sided on Rapunzel's part; Gothel simply acts like a caring, protective mother so that Rapunzel will not be tempted to defy her. This fabricated affection is the only "love" that Rapunzel has ever known, and thus her view of family, friendship, and any other kind of emotional bond is quite skewed.
Another way that Gothel emotionally manipulates Rapunzel is by grossly exaggerating the dangers of the outside world. Rapunzel is repeatedly told that if she ever leaves the tower, misery will befall in the form of "ruffians, thugs, poison ivy, quicksand" and a myriad of other creepies and crawlies. She implies that Rapunzel is far too weak and fragile to handle herself in the real world and that staying inside is the best option to achieve happiness in life. Constantly being talked down to by her mother has resulted in a major blow to Rapunzel's self esteem. She feels the need to prove herself somehow, but at the same time is anxious of what misfortunes await her if she tries.
That said, when worse comes to worst, Rapunzel is able to handle herself. This is demonstrated when Flynn Rider invades her room. Rather than freak out and hide, Rapunzel subdues him, ties him up and questions his intentions. A very brave act for someone who has never interacted with anyone besides her mother; for all she knew, Flynn could have been extremely dangerous or powerful, but she decides to defend herself as best she can regardless.
Despite her good intuition in perilous situations, Rapunzel is still rather awkward when it comes to socializing. Every part of interacting with peers is new and unfamiliar. Her emotions, whether positive or negative, run very high and switch frequently – sometimes to the point where it embarrasses and frustrates her traveling companion. Rapunzel's lack of education and experience with the outside world also impairs her ability to pick up on a lot of social cues, such as when someone is being sarcastic or using their body language to imply something.
Even though she was isolated and mistreated all her life, Rapunzel still manages to be an upbeat, optimistic girl for the most part. There are obviously lingering issues beneath the cheer and smiles, but she does her best to stay positive. Her outlet for dealing with the negative things in life comes in the form of many different hobbies – reading, baking, sewing, solving puzzles, etc – but the most prominent and passionate one is painting. With a limitless imagination and plenty of creativity, Rapunzel paints every inch of her walls. Many of these portraits are of things she one day hopes to experience, like the floating lanterns that appear on her birthday. These paintings do what her mother cannot; by portraying Rapunzel taking part in her most desired scenarios, the art silently reassures her that some day, her dreams might just come true.
Abilities/Powers:
When the Queen was pregnant with Rapunzel, she fell ill and required an elixir made from a special plant to continue living. This golden flower possessed magic that rejuvenated the sick and elderly. The Queen drinking the concoction not only healed her, but gave Rapunzel a one-of-a-kind gift. Her golden hair possesses the same properties as the flower, granting her the ability to heal wounds and possibly illnesses (this is not made clear in the film, but it seems safe to assume she could have some affect on the sick, if not heal them completely). These properties will be lost if her hair is cut. As a precaution, Gothel never cut Rapunzel's hair and told her to avoid doing the same, which resulted in her hair being about seventy feet long.
[ The camera pans to a painting on a bedroom wall. It's a landscape of rolling green hills, covered in various types of flowers. Simple lines and colors, but charming all the same. ]
Do you like it? I figured since we can't get to a nicer place, I'd bring the nicer place to us!
[ Little does she know what kind of consequences could come from this seemingly harmless activity. The view shifts to the girl's face, a bright smile spreading across her features. ]
I'm thinking of adding some people to it. Maybe some of you? Oh! Maybe you could even help! Would anyone like to join me?
Sample Entry Two:
Sleep did not come easily to her that night. Instead, she stared quietly at the ceiling, dreaming with her eyes open. Soon the darkness was full of light, lanterns floating and falling. They weren't real, of course, but she had seen them outside her window enough times to envision them perfectly. When the true light arrives – the morning sun – Rapunzel jumps out of bed, not bothering to fix it up before dashing to the slumber site of her one and only friend.
"Do you remember what today is? You only get one guess," she challenges the small chameleon, who soon purrs a response. Rapunzel shakes her head and reaches out to pick the creature up. "No, silly! It's my birthday." Grinning wide, she spins in a circle, skirt flowing and hair flying. This was her favorite day of the year – not because it was her day, but because it was lantern day. They were more beautiful than anything else she could imagine. How she longed to see them in person, if only for a moment. Why couldn't mother take her there just once? It isn't like she would try to run away. No, of course not. Mother loved her and she loved mother; nothing could tear them apart.
Personality: Upon his introduction into the series, John Watson was a man who’s suffered due to his time spent in Afghanistan. He served as an Army doctor and Captain of the 5th Northumberland Fusiliers. His rank already says much about his character as a man who is capable of being in charge of others. He’s able to maintain command even during dangerous situations as he did during the Afghan war, but while serving he was shot in the shoulder and was discharged later due to his injury and a diagnosis of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). The disorder left him with a leg limp and an intermittent tremor in his left hand.
Returning to London, he began seeing a therapist and it became clear he was also suffering from depression. John says nothing ever happens to him when his therapist suggests he maintain a blog as a way of expressing himself. Now that he’s out of the Army, he feels as though his life has lost purpose and meaning, and he can’t seem to really adjust to civilian life. The truth of the matter, which both Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes seemed to realize quickly, is that John thrives on pressure and tense situations. Even with a bomb strapped to him, he wasn’t afraid of jumping on Moriarty’s back and daring Moriarty to take both of them out. Only a man who could exist under extreme circumstances would have the daring to do such a thing. This act also shows how brave John is and how willing he is to sacrifice himself to save his friend, Sherlock Holmes.
Perhaps it’s because John has seen and experienced so much that he’s able to deal with Sherlock Holmes’ bizarre ways when no one else can tolerate him. When Sherlock is examining John to the point of irritation, John acknowledges Sherlock’s brilliance rather than takes offense to it. He can recognize that Sherlock is special and different. Because of this, he shows a great deal of patience and tolerance for the man, even when Sherlock pushes the limits of politeness by calling John home from across town just to ask John if he can borrow John’s cellphone.
As Sherlock’s friend, John takes it upon himself to help Sherlock behave in socially acceptable ways whenever possible. One side of John is a hardened Army combatant, but the other side is very human. When someone dies during an investigation, John feels remorse for their death. Sometimes Sherlock’s lack of feeling makes John angry because he, unlike Sherlock, understands the feelings that bring ‘sentiment’ out of a person. Deep down, John does have a good and gentle heart that can get attached to others. He grows quickly attached to Sherlock, of course, and he is very caring toward Mrs. Hudson (their landlady) when she’s harmed. His desire to have a connection to others is also shown through the string of girlfriends John has had over the last year, though none of his relationships last more than two months due to the bizarre nature of his life with Sherlock Holmes.
Because of his attachment to people, he is very loyal toward them. When Mycroft offers John money to spy on Sherlock for him, John turns Mycroft down without a second thought. This is odd at first, likely even to John, since his therapist labeled him as a man with trust issues, but despite that, he placed his trust in the most unlikely of people. He is a man of strong moral compass, so accepting a bribe simply isn’t in his nature to begin with, and his morals would also prevent him from killing a man unless it were absolutely necessary. However, John is willing to pull the trigger if needed, like when he killed the serial killer to save Sherlock during their case, “A Study in Pink.”
In all, John Watson can be described as a fighter, a survivor and very importantly a loyal and trustworthy friend. After witnessing Sherlock’s death, John was shattered to the core. He realized that Sherlock had given him a great deal and cured him of the intense loneliness he had experienced since coming home from the war. He needed a friend as much as Sherlock probably did. Despite all that was said after Sherlock’s death, John refused to ever believe that Sherlock was a fraud because of his unwavering faith.
Abilities/Powers: Doctor/Medical – John was trained at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital and served as a doctor in the Army. He has extensive medical knowledge, especially related to high trauma damage, which he would’ve been familiar with after serving in the Afghan war. When Sherlock asks John if he’s any good, John says with absolute confidence that he is “very good”.
Firearms – John has military training with the use of firearms and shows that he is actually an amazingly good shot with a pistol. During “A Study in Pink”, John is able to fire a bullet from the window of one building and into another killing a man who was standing very close to Sherlock Holmes. Only a man with precise aim and nerves of steel could make a shot like that. In addition, during the Hounds of Baskerville case, when the hound appears, Detective Inspector Lastrade fires his gun twice at the dog and misses, but despite being under the influence of a strong fear gas, John is able to fire his gun and kill the hound.
Nerves of Steel – John is not the type of person who lets fear overcome him in dangerous situations. It’s almost amazing how well he can keep things together. When first meeting Mycroft, John is surprisingly calm despite not knowing where he is, who he’s speaking to, or if any harm is intended toward him. John is blunt and even daring when he speaks to Mycroft, showing his fearlessness of character. When chasing down the cab in “A Study of Pink”, John follows Sherlock with little hesitation and jumps from one roof to another. All of his military training and experiences during the war have allowed John to keep calm even in life-threatening circumstances.
Sleuthing – John is nowhere near as talented as Sherlock when it comes to powers of observations, but after spending a year and a half with the now-famous detective, John has picked up on some skills. He’s become more observant and serves as a capable assistant during Sherlock’s cases.
Athletics – With his military training, John is fairly athletic, even though he’s been officially discharged from the army after suffering from some trauma during combat. He’s able to keep up with Sherlock when running down criminals. He’s also got a great right hook and isn’t hesitant to jump into a fight when needed. Also, when he was younger, he played Rugby.
