APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN!
The next processing date is Friday 11th October
IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE
We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.
In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.
You may apply for two characters every two weeks, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.
Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. If you wish to request a specific apartment, please do so in the relevant part of the application. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.
If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.
Every attempt will be made to place a character in their chosen apartments, though this may not always be possible depending on the slots available.
Applications are open constantly, but are only processed every other Friday at 7PM EST. The Saturday following acceptance, an IC mingle log will be posted for characters to be introduced to the game.
We now have a test drive community athaventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old.

Tarrlok is extremely ambitious, first and foremost. He is good at making plans and seeing them through, and prefers taking action as soon as possible to debating a more agreeable solution. He is willing to do immoral things for what he considers to be the greater good, and thinks that the ends justify the means in those cases. He tends to get his way a lot simply because of how assertive and persistent he is. He gives fancy gifts as bribes, and is always overly nice and full of praise when speaking to someone he intends to get something out of. He can ignore being offended or insulted and act like it doesn't bother him when he's actively trying to be nice. When around someone he doesn't have use for or thinks is troublesome, though, he often comes off as blunt, dismissive, and passive-aggressive instead. And, if he cannot get his way with kindness and compliments, he is very willing to resort to outright manipulation in order to get what he wants, or even become physically aggressive if he is really desperate. Once he has his mind set on something, it's very difficult to get him to quit.
He is also very proud and enjoys being in the spotlight. He is frequently in the newspaper and has several media connections, and gets very frustrated if he doesn't come out on top all the time. Part of this relates back to his childhood; because of his hatred for his father, who was Republic City's most notorious criminal at one time, he wants to prove himself worthy and be recognized as the city's savior. His father also played favorites with his sons, and Tarrlok was frequently berated and made to feel inferior to his older brother. Because of this he is determined to be the best he can and enjoys feeling superior to others, and as such he passionately pursues positions of leadership and doesn't like having to follow anyone else. He tends to think he is always right and that his way is the best way, and can also be a show-off with his fancy parties and extravagant living quarters.
He has a strong desire to be a strong, independent person and while he is willing to cooperate with others, he doesn't like working under anyone else. He prefers to be the leader in most situations, and thus is constantly trying to gain more power and status. Because of his rough childhood, he is afraid of being seen as a weakling or of losing control over his own life. He would rather do dangerous work himself than put someone else in charge and is willing to take personal risks, but when put under too much pressure he can make drastic, impulsive decisions that can do more harm than good.
Tarrlok is a very social person and makes an effort to get to know all the major movers and shakers in Republic City if he can, being very quick to introduce himself and try to get on their good side. Yet, despite the numerous acquaintances he has, he is almost always seen in either a big crowd or all alone. He doesn't seem to have that many close personal relationships and prefers to keep most people at arm's length. He has a lot of secrets in his past that could have hurt his status if they were ever revealed, so he keeps his personal life private. When he does get emotionally attached to someone, he is very caring and refuses to hurt them - which could be a weakness if he eventually had to use them to advance his career and couldn't. A big part of him is still insecure about and ashamed of his roots, too, even if he likes to think he's left those issues behind now. He may desire a more involved personal life, but is nervous about getting too close to anyone and has chosen to prioritize his political career over close relationships.
While he is smug and confident most of the time, he gets very shaken and moody if he doesn't get his way. This may not seem to happen often because he usually does get what he wants, but when he doesn't he gets disheveled and upset because of how much he hates being defeated. However, he's also a bit more reasonable and personable when he's been knocked down a few pegs. While he does - usually - have good intentions, his ego and past insecurities can get the better of him. He does have the capacity to be selfless, too, as he was willing to sacrifice his own life to stop his brother from causing any more harm. He does feel regret and shame for his actions when he lets himself get carried away, too, especially in regards to using bloodbending.
Abilities/Powers:
-Waterbending: The ability to manipulate water. Includes actively controlling water (making waves, levitating it in the air, using it as a projectile weapon, etc.) and changing the state of water (into ice and back). The user needs to be near water in order to use it, but water can be drawn from many possible sources, including plants.
-Bloodbending: An advanced form of waterbending, of which very few waterbenders are able to use. Bloodbending allows the user control over another person or an animal by bending the water in their blood. Bloodbending was thought to be possible only on a full moon (when waterbenders are at their strongest), but Tarrlok comes from an exceptionally strong line of waterbenders who are able to bloodbend at any time.

Sample Entry Two:
It was getting late and yet, Tarrlok still sat at his desk idly filling out paperwork. He was used to this routine; it was a rare day when his job let him get more than five or six hours of sleep per night, although he had learned to function on less. This particular night, however, he was waiting for something. Something that made the minutes seem to pass by like hours, every moment of awkward silence between he and his page – who would always remain until Tarrlok was finished – feeling like anxious eternity. He was quite certain that the Avatar would be paying him a visit tonight. Otherwise, imprisoning her friends was a complete waste of time that only served to make him look bad.
She had better show up. She played right into his hand before, and it wasn’t difficult at all. Despite how strong-willed and tough she thought she was, she was extremely easy to manipulate. She was young, after all. Part of him hoped that this whole situation would at least prove a point about Korra’s prowess. While she may be the Avatar, she was still a child. A child who happened to be born with great power and into a great destiny, but a child just the same. Part of him enjoyed her presence because of the ample ways there were to use her to his advantage, but another part of him feared and detested the possibility that he might one day be taking orders from her, simply because she is the Avatar and he is not.
It was true, she already had a status he could never obtain. Maybe that was part of why he felt so compelled to use her for his own gain at every possible opportunity. Not since his childhood had he felt this way, as if he were doomed to be inferior to someone else just because they were born stronger than he was.
He worked for everything he had. He trained hard, and dedicated his life to his political career at the expense of everything else to be where he was today. He certainly deserved this position more than someone who was merely born into something great. But sometimes the thought crossed his mind, the thought that so infuriated him: Was he inferior to the Avatar, after all? No, of course not, his father was mistaken in deeming him a hopeless failure.
Here he stood now as the only person who could take this city before Amon did. And – the only person who could take it before Korra did, either. He and he alone would be Republic City’s savior.
He was distracted from his thoughts by the window bursting open, Korra standing on the frame glaring at him, overcome with anger. Wonderful. Everything was going as planned.
