Personality: Izaya appears to be the main antagonist of the series and has been described within the novels as a ‘twisted human being’ and even the ‘worst human being imaginable’. He is a deplorable person with no redeeming qualities whatsoever, some aspects of his personality seeming to conform to the clinical profile of a sociopath (though this is not to suggest he necessarily IS one). On the surface, he possesses a certain level of charm and glibness – something he no doubt makes use of in order to draw in the female ‘followers’ he tends to gather to him within the novels, though these are girls who are stated to have traumatized pasts and as such leave a wider opening for manipulation – beneath which lies a covertly malignant and domineering personality in as much as he sees people as tools to be used for his own self-serving ends, or as interesting subjects for his detached observation. He loves nothing more than to observe people in hostile, traumatic or impossible situations, primarily due to his intense desire to understand and experience everything there is to know about the human mind and about human emotions.

The motivating factor behind his actions is his self-professed love for humans, though this is a love that is unilateral in nature and cannot be applied to individual humans, but rather to humanity as a whole (their traits, what makes them human, rather than who they are as individual people). Despite appearances to the contrary, the love that he describes is genuine, but his method for demonstrating this love – the torture and misuse of those around him – is both twisted and atypical. His interest in humans is all-encompassing to him, and as such he feels the need to know everything about them, to know exactly how they function under a plethora of situations, and the situations which interest him the most are damaging, dangerous or traumatic in nature. He possesses no sympathy for others when observing them in these dire situations – or under any circumstances at all - only an intense yet detached sense of interest.

There are no deep-seated issues or personal trauma lying at the heart of Izaya’s twisted personality as far as has been revealed in the novels to date, and he is described as having grown up in an entirely ‘ordinary’ home environment, with perfectly ‘ordinary’ parents, Izaya himself stating that the way he was brought up bore no bearing on the way he turned out. Whilst his parents were frequently absent – working for an overseas trading company – the lack of their presence in Izaya’s early life isn’t stated to play a significant role in his development as a person, though whether his somewhat detached upbringing did in fact have some mild effect on the way his personality formed is debatable. His intense interest in ‘human observation’ seemingly began at an early age; in Vol. 9 of the light novels he is described as feeling – and more importantly, enjoying feeling – detached from the rest of the world around him, preferring to observe people’s behaviour from the outside rather than being embroiled in activities himself, even whilst at primary school. He is described as being a top student – winning various awards – throughout his years at school, and as being neither loved nor disliked by his peers, having chosen to keep them ‘neither too close, nor to distant‘ presumably in order to better observe them.

Given his desire to remain detached from the people around him and his inability to feel conventional love for any one individual, Izaya has never really been able to develop close interpersonal relationships with the people around him. As such, he is described by Tsukumoya Shinishi (a mysterious character from the novels who continuously frequents a certain chatroom and to whom Izaya goes for information on events occurring throughout Tokyo) as being lonely, but satisfied. More explicitly, this can be taken to mean that whilst Izaya does experience loneliness thanks to his detached and isolated position, it is also a position he prefers to inhabit and one that he has no intention of changing (and it’s worth noting that this is a second-hand opinion, not Izaya’s assessment of himself). On saying this, he does have one person he considers a friend ‘in the conventional sense’, and that person is Kishitani Shinra (the son of an underground doctor who attended the same middle school as Izaya, and who later became an underground doctor himself). Their ‘friendship’ is founded mainly on the fact that Shinra himself has a twisted personality, given that he has no interest in humans at all – aside from being subjects of biological study – all his attention and love instead being focussed on Celty Sturleson (a Dullahan, or headless rider – who within mythology was said to be an Irish fairy that knocked on the doors of the dying and warned them of their impending death. She carried her severed head at her side and rode a carriage pulled by a Coiste-bodhar, a headless horse – though it takes the form of a motorbike the majority of the time within the novels so it can blend in with the modern day society it now inhabits - to the homes of the dying, one of the other central characters in the series, along with Shinra). Because of Shinra’s detachment from humanity – which Izaya views as being more perfect than his own – Shinra is able to invoke feelings of jealousy, envy and irritation in Izaya in a way that he is rarely able to feel in reference to individual humans, hence capturing his attention. Despite his feelings of ‘friendship’ – a term that I would still use loosely when applied to Izaya, and while he is noted to consider Shinra a ‘friend in the conventional sense’ in vol. 9, he also considers him a kind of rival due to his detachment from humanity – he is still able to manipulate and betray Shinra as he would with any other human being, given that Izaya is very true to his own desires and goals no matter whom that might involve destroying in the process. At the end of vol. 9 he does seem to display some bitterness regarding his own ability to casually hurt even those he considers important to him (demonstrated by his manic, bitter laughter and the way he punches the lamppost after considering how he’s attempting to betray Shinra) but ultimately he has no intention of ever changing. His own desires absolutely always come first.

There is one event from Izaya’s youth which is described – and which he acknowledges as having – a significant impact on his personality, and this was an event which occurred during middle school between himself, Shinra, and another student named Nakura. Izaya and Shinra founded a biology club together during middle school – Shinra doing so in order to demonstrate to Celty that he had outside social interests which she had expressed a wish for him to have, Izaya because Shinra had asked him and he was intrigued by the other’s personality – and Izaya began to take advantage of the use of this ‘club’ to begin a gambling ring amongst the other students, from which he was making money. Shinra discovered this and attempted to persuade Izaya to stop – not because he cared, but because he believed it was what Celty would have wanted him to do – and whilst they were arguing on the matter, Nakura (who was a part of the gambling ring) walked in, asked Izaya to return his money, and when Izaya refused Nakura moved as though to stab him with a knife. Shinra intercepted him and ended up being stabbed himself. Nakura fled, leaving Izaya and Shinra to deal with the aftermath alone. This was the point at which Izaya realised that Shinra was more detached from the world of humans than he could ever be – given that he had acted to protect Izaya purely because he believed it was what Celty would have wanted him to do – and which marked an increase in Izaya’s deviant behaviour. Izaya took the blame for the stabbing, stating that in return he would make Nakura pay for it for the rest of his life (he goes on to use Nakura’s name as an alias during a lot of his unpleasant – and often illegal - activities, and continues to manipulate the real Nakura into doing what he wants to the present day). Whether he does this out of some kind of vague loyalty towards Shinra is never really explored.

Izaya’s transition from a model student to a ‘problem child’ was further exacerbated when he progressed on to high school; whilst he outwardly continued to be a high achiever and was never overtly implicated in anything, his interest in human observation had intensified, leading to his manipulative behaviour and eventual embroilment in Tokyo’s underworld. It was also during this time that he first encountered Heiwajima Shizuo (Shizuo – who possesses inhuman strength and an unstoppable rage, particularly in regards to Izaya – is another of the central characters of the novels). Shizuo is the one human who is exempt from Izaya’s love, and in fact Izaya barely considers him to be human at all. They can be considered to be polar opposites (Shizuo functions primarily on pure emotion, whilst Izaya functions primarily on logic and strategic thought), and it is partly this that set them up as enemies from the moment they met. Shizuo was instinctively able to determine that Izaya was someone untrustworthy and deplorable, making him the one person who Izaya is unable to manipulate or – because of the lack of logic behind his actions – even predict, therefore instigating their mutual hatred. Their first interaction with each other on their first day of attending Raijin Academy (the name of their high school, later re-named Raira Academy) was highly volatile, marking the beginning of frequent fights between the two of them. Izaya began to stir up constant trouble for Shizuo because of his hatred – helped by his previously mentioned ‘followers’ – eventually setting him up for a crime Shizuo had not in fact committed, though Shizuo was cleared of any guilt relatively swiftly. It is also during one of Shizuo and Izaya’s many fights that Izaya’s connections with the Yakuza syndicate Awakusu-kai were first established, when an executive of the syndicate broke up the fight and became interested in Izaya due to his already established connections as an informant.

Another aspect of Izaya’s personality which is worthy of note and which lies at the heart of his instigation of certain major events within the novels is his fear of death, or perhaps more accurately, his fear of ceasing to exist. This fear is explicitly referred to by Izaya in the beginning of the novels when he informs Celty – whom he often makes use of as a courier – that he is afraid of dying and would like to ‘live a little longer’ despite the kind of person he is and the kind of death generally reserved for such a person. He is a self-professed atheist and believes that when a person dies they simply cease to exist altogether – there is no heaven or hell for the soul to return to, not even a sense of nothingness when one dies, simply a very final end to everything they were when they were alive. Whilst this fear partly stems from the fact that Izaya’s love of humans is so intense that he wants to be able to go on watching them – and potentially manipulating them – even after he dies, which he would obviously be unable to do if he were to simply cease to exist, it also demonstrates that Izaya is indeed human despite the fact that he would like to view himself as existing outside of – and above – the realm of normal human experience. He still holds human desires and fears, experiences many of the same emotions that other humans feel, and while to a certain extent this is something he would like to deny, on a deeper level he is also very much aware of it.

The pervasiveness and depth of this fear is illustrated by Izaya’s obsession with Celty’s disembodied head, which falls into his possession after Yagiri Namie (the head of Yagiri Pharmaceuticals, a company that deals with underground medical experimentation and who were originally in possession of the head which was a subject of their research, a company Izaya was providing information for) becomes his secretary. Izaya has a theory that dullahans are in fact the form that Nordic Valkyries take after falling to earth, and given that Valkyries are said to reward great warriors by taking them to Valhalla, Izaya becomes interested in waking Celty’s head through ‘battle’ as a form of ‘insurance’, providing him with a way to go on existing after he dies. The fact that he is willing to go to such lengths in order to prevent himself from ceasing to exist – by putting stock in an afterlife that he claims not to believe in – clearly demonstrates just how much he fears the prospect of death. Evading ceasing to exist becomes an obsession to rival his interest in humans, something he realises when he’s attacked in hospital at the end of vol. 7, though this attack causes him to realise just how deeply he’d been obsessed with Celty’s head and subsequently reminds him that humans are his true focus.

Considering that Izaya is – by his own admittance – not a warrior himself, he hopes to wake Celty’s head and be chosen by her as a candidate for Valhalla through the instigation of a war, rather than actively participating himself. It is because of this that he orchestrates the gang war between the Yellow Scarves/Turbans ( A colour gang, which are described as being Illegal street gangs which wear one kind of colour clothes, hats or scarves, in this case the colour being yellow) lead by Kida Masaomi (a Raira Academy student and main character in the novels who is a victim of Izaya’s manipulations), Dollars (a ‘colourless’ gang with no set structure or goal, that was initially set up for entertainment purposes by a group of teenagers online - one of whom is Ryuugamine Mikado, another of the main protagonists and a friend of Kida – which Izaya later became interested in and began to proliferate) and – more peripherally - Saika and her ‘children’ (Sonohara Anri, who is possessed by the demon blade known as Saika, whose desire it is to love humans, wanting to infect them by cutting them with its blade and therefore filling their consciousness with its ‘loving whisper’. Anri is another of the main protagonists, a Raira student, and close friends with the other two). Though a sizeable skirmish does take place between the three opposing factions, the fight is ultimately swiftly resolved by the Dollars and without waking Celty's head (it is shortly after these events that vol. 3 draws to a close, with Izaya having yet to achieve this particular goal).

Whilst Izaya currently appears to be the main antagonist within the novels and represents a significant negative force over the lives of the other characters, his position is one of an 'objective observer' and occasional instigator, rather than an active participant the majority of the time. He is described as being not particularly callous or violent; rather he is just a person who is overly engrossed in his interests, though his particular interests are often significantly deviant in nature.(Quote from the novels:"I'm asking you, Orihara Izaya: Can you actually kill people? With your own hands, can you kill them? Even with your switch-blade you just stab randomly without aiming at anywhere fatal. You fool around, that's what you do. So when all's said and done...you got no tricks up your sleeves except for manipulating others. What a lowlife and coward you are. It makes me laugh. Haha.") He relies on subtle manipulation and his ability to accurately interpret a person's state of mind through cues such as body language and the tone of their voice when speaking with him, combined with his extensive information network in order to get what he wants. (Quote from Izaya, within the novels: “If a person stands on the perilously thin line between one side of things and another......to get him to step into one of the sides, I push......slightly, on his back. That way he'll be able to make his first step, and not waver further”).

There are certain aspects of Izaya’s personality that make him come across as a cheerful, frivolous and – to a certain extent – flamboyant person, from his speech and mannerisms right down to his very movements (for example, he’s depicted as balancing on guard rails, hopping up to sit on the bar whilst swinging his feet at the end of vol. 9 etc etc) . His facial expressions tend mostly to range from an array of different kinds of smiles – from cheerful and ‘refreshing’ to those that have been described within the novels as ‘hideous...barely even human’.

However, his seemingly light-hearted and sometimes playful behaviour can be seen to take on a darker tone when placed in context; for example, it is often employed during situations that would, to any other person, be considered serious, traumatic and sometimes even life-threatening. This is demonstrated in the choice of ‘suicide pact’ advertisements he writes and posts on message boards in order to carry out his ‘hobby’ of meeting up with suicidal people shown in vol. 1 of the light novels; they’re described as being up-beat and sounding far too positive for the serious subject matter they pertain to. The same can be said of his interactions with the two girls he is shown meeting with for precisely this reason; on revealing his true intentions for arranging the meeting, his tone swings from forceful and serious to playful and teasing, acting as though he is playing a game rather than engaging in behaviour that is potentially confusing and even frightening to the girls in question (Izaya: Let me test you! Question one. Why am I sitting nearest to the door? Question two. What are these wheeled suitcases under the table going to be used for? First hint. The suitcases are empty!)

The same can be noted even when he is in a situation that is potentially dangerous to his own person, for example, in vol. 9 when he finally reveals that it was indeed him beneath the linen bag, he goes on to mockingly answer all the questions he’d initially remained silent for, his response when his would-be torturer is finally shaken out of her shocked silence both playful and teasing (Izaya: Ah, so you're finally talking? Goodness, your way of torture was such great fun. I was prepared to have all my nails pulled out, but I didn't expect you to be so serious about not hurting me physically... There are few chances for me to closely observe a torture artist as cute and full of herself as you, you know. I'd gladly give up a nail or a finger for such a rare opportunity - so I allowed myself to be kidnapped. That is all.)

The reasons behind this seeming playfulness and twisted humour can be considered as multifaceted as the rest of his personality. Partially, it can be viewed as a method of ambiguity, a tactic he employs in order to further confuse or deceive people; when faced with his apparent light-heartedness and often almost child-like behaviour people can be left uncertain as to how to deal with him, what to make of what he’s saying and how seriously to take him (for example, his unpleasant comment to Mikado regarding his name sounding like an air conditioning brand is said with a bright smile, leaving the boy laughing nervously as he’s uncertain what to make of it). It can also be seen as creating incongruence between the events taking place and his behaviour, which can have a variety of effects on the people around him; fear, anger, further confusion etc. For Izaya, learning everything to know about humans is of the utmost importance, and the utilisation of such a tactic aids in this as it helps bring out emotions and reactions that may otherwise have remained unobservable.

Perhaps importantly, a large part of why Izaya behaves in such a way is because – despite the fact that he is a deplorable person with no redeeming characteristics whatsoever – he does have a genuinely playful and ‘light-hearted’ side, though as with his love for humans, it’s portrayed in a twisted and atypical way. Whilst human observation is doubtlessly a serious matter as far as he is concerned – as can be demonstrated in his views on suicide and the lengths he will go to in an attempt to understand what causes humans to want to commit such an act, as well as what causes them to want to meet up with others in order to go through with it in the first place – it is simultaneously both a game and a hobby to him. He genuinely has fun and takes enjoyment from the twisted games he likes to play with people (Izaya, prologue of vol. 5: Games are meant to be enjoyed. Am I right?), and believes humans to be his playthings (he states to Anri at the end of vol. 3 after declaring war on Saika: ‘Because all humans are – mine’).

He also engages in some behaviour that has earned him the title of ‘troll’ within fandom, namely his activities within online chatrooms where he utilises different online personas for a variety of reasons, the most notable being ‘Nakura’ (mentioned earlier in the personality section) and ‘Kanra’, a female alias mostly utilised within the online chatroom he founded. His ‘Kanra’ persona utilises a particularly frivolous, playful voice, often messing around seemingly light-heartedly with the other members of the chatroom (Kanra to Bakyura: That's right! He just wants some physical contact! But he's too tsundere to say it, that's all ☆) though more notably he uses this persona to spread rumours pertaining to events and organisations occurring throughout Ikebukuro to the other members of the chatroom.

Again, his reasons for doing so are varied and often slightly more complicated than a matter of pure and simple trolling in the loosest sense of the word. Whilst he does engage in it in order to provoke others into an emotional response that he will find amusing (as with a lot of his offline actions too, and as such, can be defined as trolling) it also has more subtle uses, such as for his primary motivation of manipulating people into taking certain actions that will further his own goals (warning Mikado about specific things such as his behaviour as Dollars’ founder in order to get him to take certain actions as seen in vol. 6), or for developing trust between himself and another person (utilising a female persona for example, can be seen as an attempt to garner more trust and openness than when talking to a presumed male, and he also utilises certain online personas when manipulating specific individuals to trust him, such as Awasuku Akane in vol. 5 of the novels).

Abilities/Powers: Whilst Izaya has no magical abilities to speak of given that he is a 'normal' human, he does possess a number of abilities that might be worth mentioning here. He is an expert in parkour (a method of movement focused on moving around obstacles with speed and efficiency. The main purpose of the discipline is to teach participants how to move through their environment by vaulting, rolling, running, climbing and jumping. He mainly utilizes this skill as a form of escape), he is highly skilled with a knife, and whilst he does not rely on violence in an effort to achieve what he wants, he is stronger than his appearance would have one believe and is capable of defending himself in a fight if necessary.

More importantly – given that it is something he will likely attempt to employ within the game – he is described as having genius level intelligence and is an expert at reading other people's moods and feelings, meaning he is perfectly positioned for strategic planning and the manipulation that he prefers to engage in. He is capable of gleaning a wealth of information on a person simply through observing their body language, their tone of voice and through asking salient questions. An example of the extent of his ability in this area is demonstrated through his career as an information broker. Informants are generally people such as prostitutes, bodyguards and bar hostesses who naturally encounter underworld activities as part of their daily lives, and are able to make some petty cash by selling the information they gather to the police or to yakuza connections. Izaya, on the other hand, has established a network of such 'part-time informant' connections scattered across the city, all of whom report the information back to him and therefore enable him to exert his influence 'over the atmosphere of the entire city'. The extent of his ability to control and manipulate others and to come upon information that others would not have access to is extensive, and has lead to him establishing the backing of both Awakusu-kai and (to an unknown extent) Asuki Group (two rival yakuza syndicates).
Sample Entry: http://soul-campaign.dreamwidth.org/28610.html
Sample Entry Two: The darkly glimmering Tokyo skyline stretched out before him as far as the eye could see, the sketchy outline of buildings like concrete ghosts only just discernible in the hazy, light-studded blackness. Izaya felt his heart quicken in his chest as he imagined the teaming, sordid life that pulsed within the night-cloaked city; it left him with a heady feeling of power, to be able to stand there – a silent observer – concealed within the dark heart of the metropolis. It was one of the activities that he liked best; looking down on the world like this from his precarious perch on the roof-top, considering the plethora of human life – of human experience - as it moved beneath him like an ever-shifting wave, just waiting to be discovered.

He was standing dangerously close to the edge, one hand laid with a causal carelessness on the guardrail as he leaned out, affording himself a better view, and yet he felt no fear of falling; this was an activity he had engaged in many times before, and he would no doubt repeat it many times again. This was his playground, and he felt as at home here as though he were a fixture of the environment itself, as though this was where he truly belonged. A slow smile of what could only be described as unadulterated happiness – despite the hollow darkness that lay just beneath its surface - curved at the corners of his lips as he considered this, a short burst of almost childish laughter peeling away from him before dissipating into the night. He loved this city, loved the multitudinous hoards of people it contained, and observing it like this only filled him with a renewed eagerness to discover all there was to know about it, and about them, the humans he so utterly adored.

Finally he leaned in again with a satisfied sigh, hopping back over the guardrail with all the smooth and casual ease of a cat, hands sliding into the pockets of his fur-trimmed coat as he turned to move back in the direction of the external staircase that would lead down onto the street. “Ah, I wonder, I wonder. Just what kind of fun does the city have in store for me tonight?” he was quite alone, and yet he spoke aloud and unselfconsciously as though he had an audience, as though there was someone waiting in the blackness of the night who could answer his question.

Personality:
"The things that no one remembers will become things that never existed."

Memories are important to those without them, and for a long time Ruka had been without her childhood memories. At 17, she couldn't remember anything from ten years ago, and with an ill, and dying mother, Ruka needed those lost memories. Despite the warnings from her mother, Ruka was determined to find those memories, and maybe uncover the reason why two of the girls who had been kidnapped along with her so long ago died tragically.

If there was only one word to describe Ruka, it would be determined. What else can be said about a young woman who keeps going despite attack after attack of ghosts? Her need for those lost memories, the yearning for a father she can't remember, is her driving fuel. Nothing can stop her from her goal, not even the dead. Along the way, secrets unfold along with her memory, doubling her drive. Even the fear she felt couldn't force her to turn back from her goals.

The most we see of Ruka is in high-stress situations, with some flashbacks thrown in for good measure, and despite these situations, Ruka is surprisingly calm for all her chest-grasping and gasping. She rarely has a moment to breathe in Fatal Frame IV, always being accosted by one revelation or ghost after another, and it makes it clear she's very capable of holding her own. She has the will to survive, and won't lie down to die no matter what may happen.

Not just a determined survivor, Ruka is a quiet daydreamer, always seeming lost in her thoughts. She spends a lot of time thinking, the kind of girl who'd rather listen to someone speak than voice her own thoughts on the subject matter. She isn't timid, however, just quiet. She doesn't mind speaking with others, but there are times when it may seem she isn't listening, off in her own world; she means no offense to the people speaking with her, chances are something was said to trigger a memory, or a thought, and she'll lose herself for a moment before attempting to get back on track.

Ruka is shown to have played the piano since early childhood, and even nearing adulthood it seems she never quit playing. Both the beginning of the game, and after credit scene show her playing the piano, putting her all into a song that lies near and dear. That song was passed down from her mother, and it not only helped free her memories, but it freed the spirits of Rougetsu Island.

Over all, Ruka is a calm and determined youth, but not at all forceful. She has her moments of shyness, and she'll always be a daydreamer. And while most of the game, when playing Ruka, she focuses on herself and her memories, the people around her, friends and family are just as important.

Abilities/Powers: As a Tsukimori Shrine Maiden, Ruka was born with a musical sixth sense, an ability to hear a person's very soul. As described in an unused text file: This Lunar Melody is different for each person. It's very special. The Lunar Melody becomes higher in pitch when a person gets angry and when they're lost and scared, it becomes lower.
But the sounds don't change.

This ability is passive, and it isn't something Ruka can control, or even something that she pays much attention to. For her, every person is made of these melodies, and it's just another characteristic of a person. In a way, it's similar to empathy in the way that the melody changes pitch according to their emotions, but for someone who wasn't taught much about her heritage, it's something that is tough to recognize.

Another aspect, albeit a useless one in a game setting, is her ability to pacify the moon with the Tsukimori Song, thus ending the ripples that cause Blooming, and opening the pathway for souls to finally pass on.

Ruka has a variety of other abilities, but nothing else of supernatural nature. She's quite the pianist, and has an ear for music.

Sample Entry: Entry 1 from Tartarus

Sample Entry Two: Ruka's hands shook as she reached out to gently press down on one of the piano keys, eliciting a sad response from the once carefully cared for instrument. It was slightly out-of-tune, but not as badly as she'd feared. She carefully sat down the camera obscura on the bench next to her after reassuring herself that she wouldn't need it for the next few minutes.

It was stupid of her to think that, but she just wanted to--no, needed to--play that song. Just once. The melody was so familiar, a childhood remnant that pressed itself against her skull and conjured up memories, images she still couldn't remember.

"Maybe it will..." One key after another, and she could almost hear her mother's voice.

"Good job, Ruka." She kept playing, reminded of happier times. The melody sang to her, pulled on her heartstrings; it made her feel so full,"You've gotten better"

Ruka stopped playing as she hit a bad key, her mother's voice disappearing with the harsh sound, and the melody she hardly remembered disappearing along with it. She felt as if she had been so close to something, so close to bringing something, some far off memory, back only to lose it again.

"I came back to remember, and I won't leave until..." Until she can remember her father's face, and his touch. Until she is whole again.

Personality: Well, I'm about as opposite an airbender as you can get.
Only the Avatar can master all four elements and bring balance to the world. As the incarnation of the planet’s spirit, the chief duty of the Avatar is to maintain peace and balance throughout the world by utilizing all four elements. It’s a task that weighs heavily on young Korra, especially since she’s barely even set foot outside her compound in the Southern Water Tribe. This is something she struggles with all throughout season one, similarly to Aang; the priority she places on her position as the Avatar and what is essentially the weight of the world being placed on her shoulders. Although the cycle of the Avatar continues through reincarnation, each life is individual— each Avatar born into the world is their own person. This couldn’t be truer in Korra’s case as she’s essentially the polar opposite of her past life, Aang. Where Aang fled at being named the Avatar, Korra initially embraced it, learning to bend three elements by the age of four. Having been raised by the monks of the Southern Air Temple, Avatar Aang was greatly in touch with his spirituality. For Korra, this is her weakness; the spiritual side of bending and being the Avatar is where she struggles, and is a major part of the reason that she’s unable to airbend. Lin sums it up pretty nicely when she tells Tenzin "I can't believe your sweet-tempered father was reincarnated into that girl. She's tough as nails."

And boy is she tough.

Ever since she was a child, Korra has excelled at bending and it's definitely had an effect on her. It's led her to have brash and impulsive tendencies, and a determined stubbornness that just won't quit. She can easily be called headstrong and assertive. Because of this, she usually approaches things in a positive manner. She's sort of grown up to be a tomboy and seems to dissociate herself with "prissy" or "elegant" things. Korra has a fiery personality and seems to live in the moment— she doesn't typically think ahead of her actions, especially if she's angry or agitated. She's not above threats, both verbal and physical, against her enemies and will always rise to a challenge. In fact, she makes a point of declaring that she's never backed down from anything her entire life, and it's true. Korra has much in the way of confidence and independence (initially, at least), which also gives way to impatience, unfortunately. Korra's also shown to possess a good amount of wit and sarcasm... she's got a good sense of humor, when she's not mad.

Korra's brimming confidence is never really breached until she starts living with Tenzin near Republic City. When she witnesses Amon take the bending from a few members of the Triple Threat Triad, Korra is obviously affected— it even haunts her in later episodes. In a way, Amon is like an embodiment of all her fears. The thought of failing as the Avatar weighs heavily on her (Amon, in fact, preaches to the crowd that he gained the ability to take away bending because Korra is a failure), and because she’s placed such an importance on bending all of her life, the thought of actually losing it terrifies her. So much so that after Amon ambushes her for the first time, she breaks down and cries. Bending is part of her identity, has been since she was a child. A lot of her fear has to do with the fact that she’s been so sheltered all her life. It’s the first time in seventeen years that she’s ever felt fear like this, and she really doesn't know how to handle it at first. It’s in instances like these that Korra can be pretty vulnerable, even with her tough exterior. Ego makes up a lot of who she is and when it takes a blow, such as Tarrlok's comments on Korra being a "half-baked" Avatar, it hits her hard.

Seventeen years under White Lotus guard has really lent itself to a lot of inexperience for Korra. This is made abundantly clear when she first enters Republic City. Whether it's asking a vendor for food without possessing any money or telling a group of Equalist supporters that bending is the coolest thing ever, it's easy to see that because of her upbringing, Korra is naive when it comes to certain things... even a little simple-minded. This is the case when she decides to confess her feelings to Mako at hearing Pema's advice. She thinks that by telling him they were meant for each other that he might leave Asami to be with her, and it's not meant to be conniving or viscous. It's simply because she doesn't know how to deal with these types of situations to begin with. This is also what's at play when she knocks out three Triple Threat Triad goons while causing a lot of destruction to property. Her mindset is ultimately "beat up the bad guys and save the day" without much thought of consequence.

Like her companions, Korra has a strong sense of justice and morality. She wants to do what's right. She wants to be a successful Avatar, sure, but it's more than that. The people around her are just as important as any duty she thinks is required of her. She's a very loyal individual who's well-intentioned and caring. It's almost surprising to see how much compassion she has toward her friends and how amazingly sympathetic she can be, as seen when she learns about Mako and Bolin's parents. Korra holds herself responsible for the people around her, benders and non-benders alike. At her center Korra is an extremely honest person (she has no reason to be deceptive, really), sometimes to a fault. She wears her heart on her sleeve, essentially, and is usually easy to read as such.

Korra has a long way to go and a lot to learn, but she is learning.

Abilities/Powers:I'm the Avatar, you gotta deal with it!
In the world of Avatar, some people are born with the inherit trait of bending, or manipulating the elements of fire, water, earth and air, depending on their heritage. Korra, who was born as the next cycle of the Avatar has the ability to learn and master all four elements, as well as the ability to bend energy (though because of her canon point, she won't know how to air bend and definitely won't be able to energybend). The Avatar also has an innate connection to the Spirit World which is to be used as means of maintaining balance in both worlds, also giving way to the Avatar State. While she's a skilled bender, Korra has yet to acquire the skill to use the more advanced styles of bending, such as metalbending or producing lightning bolts through firebending. As a whole, Korra is very physically strong and a skilled martial artist.

Below are the specifics of each form of bending that Korra's currently capable of.

WATERBENDING ➥ the hydrokinetic ability to control water in all its forms. This is the element of her home and what she has the most experience with. Thanks to Katara, Korra's also learned how to use waterbending to heal wounds.

EARTHBENDING ➥ the geokinetic ability to control earth, rock and sand. Though she tends to live by "offense is the best defense," Korra seems to use earthbending more than anything else when it comes to defending. That's not to say she won't use it to attack, either.

FIREBENDING ➥ the pyrokinetic ability to create and control fire. Korra's shown to sort of compulsively firebend, as if it comes easiest to her in the heat of the moment.

Sample Entry Two:
Though it took time, Korra eventually fell back into the habit of training with airbending techniques. Just because she was carried off and brought to this desolate town against her will didn’t mean she should drop everything, including her hope in mastering her last remaining bending art. It was harder, without Tenzin… or Air Temple Island as a whole, but it gave her something to do, something to work toward. Most days she could muster up the concentration. The real struggle was finding a quiet, open space to practice in.

Today, for instance, had been one of her unluckier days. Korra had started out in her apartment practicing her forms, as per usual, but couldn't quite seem to focus. Noises from throughout the building would throw her out of concentration, no matter the size, and she couldn't seem to shake her paranoia. She relocated three, four times before she ended up on an empty sidewalk out in the open. Finally... Now plopped onto the ground, the Avatar-in-training crossed her legs and closed her eyes with a straightened posture. Her mouth opened and she was about to take in a deep breath before—

Her "tiny portable telephone" started to ring.

"Oh, come on!!"

Riku | Kingdom Hearts | reserved pt. 2

[personal profile] blindfolds 2012-09-24 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: The first thing you need to know about Riku is that he's highly adaptive. From the start, Riku manages to shape himself around his circumstances while retaining his own strong personality. He adapts to change very easily, even if he doesn't always agree with it or go along willingly. Part of this is stubbornness, one of Riku's key personality traits. If you were to ask Riku's closest friends to describe him, they'd let you know real quick just how stubborn Riku can be. Sometimes for good, like when he's fighting on the side of light and never gives up on his friends. Sometimes it can be a bad thing, but over the years he's mellowed out enough that it doesn't usually become a problem. Riku might not always learn easily, but once the lesson sticks, it leaves a big imprint on Riku and how he grows.

In the series, Riku goes through a lot of change. He starts off as an average, curious child on a small set of islands. A couple fateful encounters and a heavy focus on a desire for adventure turns Riku into a teenager possessed by wanderlust. A little arrogant and a little over-confident, as a direct result of literally being the best at a lot of things, or at least looked at that way. Knowing the possibilities and so desperate for something outside of his tiny, uneventful little life, Riku's willing to risk it all, even giving up his family for a chance to leave. His friends? Well, they'll be coming along with him, of course. Why wouldn't they? They must want to see new horizons just as much as he does. Riku's grown up as a leader, he can't imagine giving that up or having his best friends question it, let alone challenge it.

At the start of the games, Riku's headstrong nature and self-confidence are overwhelmingly strong traits. He thinks he can do anything. When things don't go as planned, Riku reacts with frustration, and is even willing to believe some rather questionable sources to get what he wants, or what he feels is the truth. It's important to note that, despite waking up in the wrong neighborhood (so to speak) Riku doesn't easily turn on his friends. He does, in the end, but it's after a lot of manipulation against them by some very convincing actors offering him power and opportunities he's never had before. Things he wants. Things his friends should want with him. Sora and Kairi are his best friends, but to him it seems that Sora's gone off to find his own new friends, and he doesn't need him anymore. Maybe he doesn't even want him anymore, now that he's running his own show. Riku's never experienced that before, ever. Finding Kairi in a comatose state just seals the deal for his new manipulators. She's still his friend, and if anyone can save her he can. In the end, that affects his later decisions a lot. Unfortunately, a combination of bad influences and his own well-hidden jealousy towards Sora makes his decisions a danger to all of them.

It's hard to talk him out of it once Riku's made his mind up on something. As time goes on, though, Riku experiences true betrayal, realizes what it's like to be deceived and used for someone else's goals, and that he's been purposely turned against his real friends. When it comes down to it, though, that's where Riku's true loyalty lies, and where it always has. When he messes up, Riku realizes it, and once he's had time to grow up a little he's not ashamed to admit it anymore. (A change everyone is likely much happier for.) After admitting that he's done wrong, Riku's also willing to do just about anything make up for it, especially when it comes to Sora and Kairi. They are, after all, his best friends. Just as he was willing to sacrifice everything for his own wants when he was younger, there's nothing that he wouldn't do for them. If anything puts his friends in danger, Riku's there to save them, and if he can't he'll do whatever's necessary for someone else to. He's proved that fact several times over.

Now, when it comes to other bad guys, he can be very protective of his friends. But not to the point where he'll prevent them from fighting their own battles or accomplishing growth in their own way, or to the point of sheltering them. In KH2 he provides Kairi with the means to save herself, and doesn't charge into the situation head on to be her rescuer. He knows she's smart, and at this point he knows that her and Sora are capable of taking care of themselves without being completely dependent on him. (A big part of this, however, was his immense guilt over betraying Sora and causing them both harm in the first place, and being forced to take on their enemy's appearance. It took both Sora and Kairi to convince him that they still cared about him and wanted him to stick around, even with any problems he might have. That's what friends are for, right?)

By the end of KH2 he's accepted his faults, surpassed his mistakes and made up for them, and accepted the tiny world he was born into. But at his heart, Riku's still a wanderer. He goes on to take the Mark of Mastery exam to better himself and his abilities, even though he's already confident in those, purely to make sure he's worthy of wielding them. He's also not going to settle down on his world and give up his dreams of adventure, especially not while there are still bad guys out there to put people in danger. Despite all he's accomplished for the good of the worlds, Riku isn't the type of person who would describe himself as a hero. Not after his past. He lingers on his past faults sometimes, but never enough to bring down the mood or cause problems in the way of whatever he should be focusing on. Most of all, he just wants to make up for what he did and make himself worthy of the things he cherishes most.

He probably wouldn't call himself friendly, either, and while he may not be the type to cheerfully wander up to someone and start a conversation, he's not as standoffish as he used to be, and he's not rude to anyone who doesn't deserve it. He jokes easily with friends, and he and Sora still have a friendly competition in life, and a stronger bond after confessing their own jealousies toward each other.

Another thing Riku isn't (not anymore, at least) is rash. He doesn't act without thinking. You can tell he grew up as the oldest in his group of friends, easily taking on roles of responsibility or leadership... now more when it's needed instead of taking command by force.

Ultimately, the course Riku's taken through life has been a challenging one. He's played the roles of friend, antagonist, villain, ally, and hero, and he's come out much better for it in the end.

Riku | Kingdom Hearts | reserved pt. 3

[personal profile] blindfolds 2012-09-24 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
Abilities/Powers: Riku is a phenomenal fighter. Supposedly, up until the events in Kingdom Hearts, when play-fighting against his friends he went mostly undefeated. Some of the kids on the islands mention fighting Riku three against one in their early teens, and still being bested by him. Obviously he is capable of being defeated, most often by Sora, but he's still recognized as the most skilled fighter his age. Physically, Riku is both strong and fast. His fighting style is a lot of show and a lot of quick, hard attacks. More often Riku will strike from above. If he doesn't have the element of surprise handy, he goes for combo attacks. Ultimately it's about overwhelming his opponent so they slip up and provide an opening for him to do some real damage.

Riku's Keyblade is one of a kind, and can be summoned anywhere.* Way to the Dawn, appropriately titled to reflect Riku's nature and past struggles. Its appearance resembles his previous weapon, Soul Eater, in its darker half. While it appears dual-natured, it's still a Keyblade belonging to the Realm of Light. As far as Keyblades go, Way to the Dawn offers no magical boost, but enhances its wielder's own strength.

Riku's superhuman abilities are mostly offensive magic and sensory abilities. He has the ability to detect darkness and light in people, particularly darkness. He can pick out the distinctive scents of other people and recognize them, which makes it hard to take him by surprise... most of the time. No one's perfect, and Riku's skills can easily be surpassed by people with more skill at remaining hidden. However, his abilities are so fine-tuned on their own that he can navigate and fight completely blindfolded, relying on his other senses alone. This manner of detection does not replace his physical sight, and he isn't able to tell what a person or his surroundings looks like while blindfolded. (This is mostly irrelevant as Riku hasn't worn a blindfold since before the final battle with Xemnas in KH2.)

While his magic is primarily dark-aligned overall, it's possible that he's capable of the full range of common light magic featured in the Kingdom Hearts universe: Fire, Blizzard, Thunder, etc. I say "possible" because he's only shown casting these in the Realm of Sleep, where there were other factors that may have influenced his magic, including highly magical allies. He is definitely capable of casting dark fire magic of all three common tiers (dark fire/fira/firaga) as shown in each game, often in rapid succession for combination attacks and more powerful blows, and creating magical shields that seemingly block anything, magical or not.

He is also able to cast a single Stop spell during an attack called Dark Splicer, which temporarily freezes his opponent in time, allowing Riku to rapidly teleport around them, attacking with his Keyblade.

Riku can also join with allies (or at least with Sora) to form powerful joint magical and physical attacks known as Limits, and is capable of healing magic, most notably an extremely powerful Cure spell capable of healing all nearby allies.

As of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, Riku has attained the rank and title of Keyblade Master. This gives him certain responsibilities and new, more rare and neutral skills, such as extracting Hearts from living beings as well as himself, and diving into other Hearts, including those that are sleeping. He can also pass on the ability to wield a Keyblade to anyone of his choosing through a simple ritual. Aqua, another Keyblade Master, is also capable of realizing when this ceremony has been performed on someone. It's not clear if this ability is specific to Masters.

* - Given that Riku possesses other magic and only most of it is dependent on his ability to use his weapon, I'm not sure if he'll be able to keep his Keyblade or not. Let me know when/if I'm accepted?

Sample Entry:
[ After all the technology Riku's seen, on all the world's he's been in, this new phone of "his" is kind of... disappointing. They might as well be using walkie-talkies. ]

Why have this at all if I can't use it for anything useful? Okay, look... If anyone's hearing me on the other side, I'm looking for some people. They might not even be here. But if they are... If there's anyone here named Sora, or Kairi, I need to talk to them. They'll be looking for me too.

[ He hesitates, unsure about the idea of putting himself forward in this environment, but there can't be more than a few people here with any idea of how to handle this. If there are any at all. ]

My name is Riku. If anyone needs help, let me know.

Sample Entry Two: Riku stands perched on the corner of a building, hands in his pockets and a very deep sense of worry growing in his chest. It doesn't show on his face, and it's not for his own health. Sure, he doesn't know where he is. But he's been through that before, time and time again, and a new world means new discoveries, sometimes even a new story. He's worried because now they've split up, all three of them, once again caught in the beginning of something he doesn't know the outcome for. Hell, he doesn't even know the basic path. Sora's gone, but he'll be fine. He needs this time for himself anyway, with what lies ahead. Kairi's stuck with people who will protect her and teach her how to use her powers to do it better, and he... Well, there's the loop right back to the big problem, isn't it? He doesn't know where he is us.

This is the building he woke up in, quiet and empty except for the people stuck here with him. Just like this town. Even better, they don't seem to know what's going on at all, and Riku can't say that surprises him. Most people aren't exactly familiar with appearing on a completely different planet without their consent. But whether they're refugees cast out of other worlds or they've been brought here for a purpose, Riku has a feeling they've all got a big problem on their hands.

He scuffs the heel of his sneaker against the roof and steps up on the edge to take another look at the place. Climbing up here by hand might not have been the best idea, what with the building looking ready to collapse in places, but it's given him a viewpoint and some time to think on his own. Is this part of it now? His duty to protect and serve the worlds? Maybe. If that's the case, there's something here he needs to do. The question is what? How does he figure that out with no warning?

Eying the billboard in the distance, the last thing Riku feels is safe.

Character Name: Sasha Morden
Background/History: Sasha's birth is somewhat a mystery. She was found abandoned outside of an ER, seemingly only hours after coming into the world. One of the reasons for her abandonment became clear when the sleeping infant woke, showing her eyes to have no pupils or irises. She was, effectively, blind, but otherwise healthy. Sasha was adopted within a month by Dan and Trisha Morden; a middle-aged couple who saw past the oddity and saw a healthy baby girl that could be theirs.

It wasn't until Sasha became more a more mobile toddler that her parents noticed anything unusual about her behavior. The careening child would sometimes stop just short of running into something, or move to avoid a toy or the edge of a table. She also started tracking the movements of those around her with her head, knowing who was where and what they were doing. Her parents took her to a barrage of optic specialists, where it was discovered that her optic nerves might not transmit the usual visual data, but they were slightly altered to link up with her auditory senses, which were all tied together to give her a very effective echolocation/sonar system. Instead of using vocal squeals and pitches, like bats and aquatic mammals, Sasha's auditory perception could pick up the way ambient sounds reacted to the world around her, giving her a grey-scale view of the world; a view that intensified and lightened depending on the volume of the sound around her.

There were a few papers written and much fascination with her abilities, but through it all, Sasha maintained her usual cheery disposition. Her parents quickly saw that nothing was actually wrong with her, it was just her body's way of adapting for her 'handicap'. A handicap that she used as a facade to be able to fit in. While she was amused at the reactions from the doctors, she'd seen the occasional way she'd been looked at, and her attuned hearing had picked up 'freak' more than once. So, she played the role of the blind girl when she went out in public; using her folding cane in new places, wearing sunglasses to hide blank eyes that caused others discomfort, trying not to show that she was any different from anyone else.

Her parents were supportive with her decision, not out of embarrassment or shame, but out of a need to let her be the way she wanted. They didn't pressure her to hide her abilities - abilities they only knew the surface of. As she grew older, she found she could affect the frequencies around her. Use them. Change them. With practice, she could use them to effect the others around her, causing audiochemical reactions in others; certain frequencies reverberated in the human body and caused the brain or organs to release certain chemicals that caused emotional and bodily reactions. She could also affect the volume of things around her, either muting the area or heightening the frequencies to turn up the volume as well as draw sounds to her. This was something she kept from her parents, a small part of her not sure how much more they could take before they thought adopting her was a bad idea and they gave her back - something her parents would never do, but children have strange thoughts regarding how the world works.

So she grew up keeping a part of herself a secret from those around her. Occasionally, she'd meet someone who would become a close friend, lover, or someone who was tangled in her life, and they'd find out about her being able to 'see', though she hadn't met anyone yet she felt close enough to or that she trusted enough to share her other abilities with.

Personality: Born with what most would consider an affliction or a handicap, Sasha hardly sees it that way. While it's been the only way she's ever seen the world, she's aware of the fact that it's different than most people do. She doesn't consider herself blind, since technically, she can see things - just in a different way from how others do. She is aware of how uncomfortable the physical side effect of her uniqueness is, so she does her part to fit in to 'how blind people are supposed to act' when she's out in public. This stems from a desire to put others at ease, as well as a dislike of being thought of as too different, a freak. In private or with close friends, she's more open, more expressive. She's not ashamed of her affliction, she just knows that people don't like things that are different from what they're used to. And Sasha knows she's very, very different.

Interested in languages and in meeting new people, she studied French and Spanish, picking up German from her mother's parents and Portuguese while she was in Brazil. She traveled over as much of South America and Europe as she could when she graduated, taking three years to travel to all the places she'd ever wanted to go while she could, not sure what the future would bring and not ever wanting to have wasted an opportunity like this. She made weekly calls back to her parents, always letting them know where she was and how she was doing, sometimes able to make video chats to let them see she really was doing fine. While she'd loved backpacking over Europe and seeing all the historical wonders that it had to offer, as well as the cultural diversity and customs that she couldn't get enough of, she had to admit that her favorite time was when she'd left Europe and spent the next year and a half in South America. She'd traveled where it was safest for a tourist to go, only ever having to use her abilities to get her and her companions out of a rather dangerous situation once.

The abilities she had to modulate frequencies weren't things she played with often, but she'd honed them in private to ensure that if she ever needed to, she wouldn't be the 'helpless little blind girl' that everyone saw. With her love of gymnastics and thrill-seeking, Sasha was a point of interest for the other backpackers who traipsed around the countries along with her. With the nomadic nature of backpackers and the constant turn-over, Sasha couldn't exactly open up to everyone fully, but she could make most of them wonder about the seemingly blind girl who would jump off a suspension bridge with a bungee cord strapped to her ankles, or who base jumped or hang-glided with ease.

Sasha is also a bit of a flirt, but in a playful, friendly way that didn't usually follow through to completion. She enjoys making others feel good about themselves, and isn't shy in regards to their bodies or hers. She's a tactile person, which others generally let slide due to them thinking it's because she's blind. She shamelessly lets them think that, since it allows her to get into most people's personal space without them taking too much offense. Not in some creepy, pervy way, but in a general sense of just enjoying having someone else around that she can touch and take a modicum of comfort from. She tries to be honest, but with having to usually lie about her blindness and abilities, she can understand the need for a few fibs here and there. She's not a malicious person, but she's fiercely loyal to those who have earned it, willing to put herself in iffy situations to try to help a friend. She's street-smart and has learned a lot about people and the way they really are from her travels, as well as picking up little quirks from some of the cultures she's visited.

Romantically, Sasha's never had anything more than a few flings. She's heterosexual, but that doesn't stop her from occasionally flirting with some of her female friends, especially if she's had a bit to drink. She has a live and let live philosophy, figuring that people should be allowed to be with who they want, and as long as everyone's a legal, consenting adult, who gives a crap? She doesn't mind partying on the beach or out with her friends, but she limits her 'fun stuff' to alcohol. That being said, she doesn't judge or get overly concerned if her friends partake, as long as they don't take enough to hurt themselves.

Abilities/Powers:
  • Echolocation - Her optic nerves receive audio transmissions instead of visual ones. The result is a greyscale version of the world - detail depending on the strength and steadiness of the audio frequencies she's adapting
  • The ability to alter the soundwaves in an 'area of effect' zone around her - the size dependent upon the intensity and strength of her alteration. She can 'mute' an area, or pick up conversations further away than she should hear by pulling the soundwaves to her.
  • By changing the pitch of the sound in an area, she can use it to have a cause and effect on objects - shattering glass, bursting eardrums, vibrating surfaces.
  • Is able to cause audiochemical reactions in people - like the 'brown note', Sasha has discovered what she's named the 'blue note'; a frequency that can cause arousal in a person or group of people. There's also the 'white note' - unconsciousness, the 'green note' - nausea, the 'red note' - rage, and the 'yellow note' - fear/terror.

Sample Entry:
Fave place ever I've been to? Brazil. Yeah, I know, it's kind of cheating since it's a ginormous country, but I loved working my way through it. No Brazillian nuts there, bub. Just nuts. Falling right off the trees. I mean, yeah, you gotta watch yourself for parasites and that you don't get your face nommed by something with face-nomming tendencies, but there are face-nomming things everywhere. The people are pretty damn awesome, too. Well, the ones without guns. Avoid them. But if you just take in the residents and try not to run into guerrillas and drug runners, it's really pretty great. And don't let them ice you on the idea of going. It's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Hell, look at me? A year and a half out there and I still have all my fingers and toes. Besides, life's really only worth living if you bother to take a few risks.

Sample Entry Two:
Sitting curled up in her window seat, Sasha rested her head against the window, idly eating an orange and staring blankly out the window. It was raining, and rain was always a sound that not only eased her, but reminded her of camping out in the wilds of some of the less tamed parts of the world. Now that she was home, she had to find her place again. Settle in. Stop thinking about shoving her clothes in a backpack and just sticking her thumb out to catch a ride. That was a mental debate she had every day. Not that she didn't love her home, her friends, her parents, but life when she'd been travelling had been... easier. In its own way. It wasn't all sunshine and roses; she'd had the occasional night or two of not having enough money to eat, or being stuck out in crappy weather and trying to find a place to sleep, but the good days so far outweighed the bad, it made remembering them almost an elusive task.

A job. She needed to find a job. She couldn't live at her parents' house forever, and she didn't really want to. She was twenty-one. She'd had her wild days, and she needed to be happy that she'd been able to and move on. Which begged the question of, 'What kind of job could a blind girl who wasn't blind get?', and Sasha had been trying to figure out the answer for a few days. A music store, maybe? She had perfect pitch, shouldn't be too hard to prove it. But... she knew how touchy musicians could be over their instruments, and they'd likely be worried she'd bump into everything or handle it wrong. So, what? No way she could work at a fast food place, not that she wanted to. The options, she felt, were limited. She wasn't blind. Not in the technical sense of the word, but she couldn't just run around saying what she really was, because there wasn't really a word for what she was, other than freak. That was a word that always left a bad taste in her mouth, and she always did her best to avoid having it directed at her again.

Her parents had told her to take her time. She was always welcome at home. No need to rush. She loved them, really. They'd never given her any reason to think they didn't love her as they would their own flesh and blood, but she knew that her peculiarity hadn't been easy. She hadn't been the normal little girl they'd probably thought they were getting. But they'd never complained, not even in private. It's why she couldn't stay mad at them for being so... perfect. She'd seen some of her friends' parents, and she'd seen the good and the bad aspects of family life through them. She had literally nothing to complain about. Her parents were practically Ozzie and Harriet. But maybe... maybe she wanted to be pushed. To have them light a fire under her and tell her to put up or shut up. Make something of herself or get out.

Thinking about it, she realized she only wanted that because it would give her a valid reason to side with the part of herself that wanted to pack up and go again. Sighing, she bumped her head against the glass, wishing she could find some sort of easy solution in the pattern of the falling raindrops. She wouldn't, of course, but watching it fall and listening to the pitter-patter as it hit and washed over the world was still soothing. So she let her mind drift, and let the sound soothe her, let it wash away the 'what ifs'. Let it remind her of those simpler times.
