Applications

APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN!
The next processing date is Friday 11th October

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every two weeks, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. If you wish to request a specific apartment, please do so in the relevant part of the application. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Every attempt will be made to place a character in their chosen apartments, though this may not always be possible depending on the slots available.

Applications are open constantly, but are only processed every other Friday at 7PM EST. The Saturday following acceptance, an IC mingle log will be posted for characters to be introduced to the game.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old.

Gilbert Nightray | Pandora Hearts | Not Reserved (1/2)

Name: Aki
Contact Info: [plurk.com profile] mypoorsoup
Other Characters Played: Charles Fei-Ong
Preferred Apartment: None!

Character Name: Gilbert Nightray
Canon: Pandora Hearts
Canon Point: Retrace 78
Background/History: The Pandora Hearts wiki and Gilbert's entry!

Personality: In a world defined by frequent and often violent changes, Gilbert Nightray is an unusual constant. This is humorous in retrospect, considering he's set up at the very beginning of the story to appear like a person that changes violently along with the world around him. After Oz disappears into the Abyss, he (and the reader) initially believe that a relatively short amount of time passes before his return, when ten years had passed in reality. When Oz returns to the surface world, the shy and clumsy servant that he had left behind is waiting for him, several feet taller and much colder, going by the alias Raven and not even revealing his identity of his own volition. When speaking to Oz directly after that reveal, Gilbert even goes so far as to say that he would hate the person that he has grown to be, that he isn't the same at all and there is no even ground left to stand on now that he's betrayed the Vessalius household — to which Oz replies that he can't see anything that has made Gilbert any less... well, Gilbert.

It's true that the current Gilbert is very different from his past self on the surface, however. During the ten year absence of his young master, he threw away the life, people and personality that he had known before, desperately following the thread of hope given to him by Xerxes Break and believing that in doing so, he would eventually be able to bring Oz back. He grew up very fast after that failed coming of age ceremony, and abandoning the Vessalius household to act as Break's "left eye" clearly drove into him a permanent lingering guilt, as he still avoids Oscar Vessalius ten years later and mentions this betrayal immediately when Oz discovers who he is. Being a part of the Nightray household in his earlier years and the Abyss-centered organization Pandora under his new alias, his youth was filled with daunting tasks and missions that left his hands bloodstained. The frosty and distant initial impressions that he tends to leave can be attributed in part to this upbringing. He grew to adapt well enough, however, even becoming something of a gun aficionado in the process. As the years passed, his blossoming temper paired terribly with this and resulted in someone with a tendency to be just a little too trigger-happy. Even then, this is just the tip of the iceberg that lies underneath Gilbert's (actually quite thin) stoic exterior.

While he may seem aloof and disinterested at first glance, the core of his personality is left largely unchanged, and that core is anything but. He's got a raucous temper and a tendency to react a little too quickly on an emotional level to just about everything. He's an anxious and nervous person by nature, stress and fretting coming more naturally to him than relaxation. He's quick to become flustered and easy to tease. His overblown fear of cats is almost extraordinary, his awkward inability to interact with crowds (and women) is hilariously unfitting for someone pinned as "a brooding, attractive gentleman" by most social circles, and his constant mother henning is enough to drive anyone up the wall. Sure, he's more likely to sputter and grow irritated with situations and people than he is to blush or scuttle away these days, but the truth is, not much has changed about what causes those reactions. Though the outermost layers have been shifted around and rearranged out of a need for self-preservation, what's intrinsic to him has remained relatively untouched.

Also intrinsic to Gilbert as a person is his deep sense of loyalty. Even before being given the mental charm that drives him to kill all enemies of his master (Oswald Baskerville at the time, and Oz Vessalius in the future), he had a natural inclination toward being overbearingly, ferociously protective. This is due in part to growing up on the streets with Vincent and having to constantly keep an eye on and watch out for him. Though the stress of this burden drove him to resentment and the brief consideration of abandonment, he feels a crushing guilt for it even being a thought, and his sense of loyalty and love for his little brother stay him every time. His purpose, as he sees it, is to protect those important to him, be it in big ways (trying to save Oz from the Abyss with his own hands, shoving people out of danger, grabbing hold of Alice before she falls in a landslide) or tiny, nitpicky ways (making sure Oz dresses well, preparing meals and snacks for everyone, etc). This fussing can surely get grating at times, but the loyalty and care underlying it is what, in the end, makes Gilbert an absolutely faithful and honest companion. It is also considered by some to be a great weakness of his, though Gilbert doesn't view it as such.

In fact, as far as weakness and being weak-willed goes, Gilbert is an easy target to make fun of. He can be pretty quick to cave, especially when requests (or bullying) from friends are involved. It's even something of an ongoing theme, from little potshots about his inability to quit smoking (eight tries and still counting!), to Vincent claiming that he's kept his knowledge of the past a secret because of Gilbert's weakness. Gilbert, however, has shown that he actually has quite a solid support beam tucked away under all of the withdrawn inclinations and emotional outbursts. For the majority of the series, his own crippling fear of remembering his past has held him back severely. He's even frightful at one point over the notion that Oz will move forward entirely without him one day, leaving his static self behind, but in an ironic twist he's the one who winds up taking the greatest strides forward after Jack's reveal.

Coming to terms with "Gilbert Baskerville" is where he truly begins, when all is said and done. His hands aren't at all clean, he's abandoned two households, abandoned Glen, and shied away from his only blood family. He's injured the person closest to him, and likely many more in his climb to reach the point he's at. He's made as many mistakes as a person can make, and while it would seem this is enough to crush his at times fragile sense of self, there's only one conclusion he draws from it. He's done terrible things, yes, but that's exactly what makes him who he is. There's no point in running away from what he's done or the emotions he's felt; he can only accept that these actions and decisions are a part of him and move on. This ability to keep pressing forward, while unhealthy in some hands, is a sign of his massive potential to grow in a positive direction — a direction he's already heading in fast.

Gilbert Nightray | Pandora Hearts | Not Reserved (2/2)

Abilities/Powers:
Raven → Gilbert holds a contract with the Chain known as Raven and can summon it at will. Raven is capable of emitting massive bursts of blue fire that can even be damaging to the near-immortal Baskervilles. It has the ability to travel between dimensions (as seen in the escape from Cheshire's), though this thoroughly wears him out, and it also allows him to seal B-Rabbit's power to keep it from destroying Oz's body. As a black-winged Chain, it is capable of dragging people down to the darkest depths of the Abyss with the chains of condemnation, though this obviously won't come into play in Haven.
Immortality → As a Baskerville he also has partial immortality. While Baskervilles can age if not tied to a Chain, it takes a large amount of physical damage to kill them. Gilbert is shown surviving stab wounds and lethal poison, though other Baskervilles have shown that they can heal from things like impalement as well.
Items/Weapons: His pistol, a box of ammunition and a pack of cigarettes.

Sample Entry: voice test.
Sample Entry Two: The air in Haven can be crisp and enjoyable, as Gilbert has come to find. Greeting it in the morning with a cup of coffee and a cigarette (if he feels like denting his precious pack) is something he can actually look forward to, even if the city on a whole is something the jury is still out on. He's quiet to keep from disturbing any of his roommates when he leaves for the nearby staircase with drink in hand, only pausing to slip his jacket on.

Once outside, back to the door, he settles in for a few minutes. While pleasant, the moments that he keeps to himself in the morning aren't over-indulgent or dragged out. He has other obligations to fulfill, after all. Buckets of well water to draw, a young master to help with breakfast; even if Oz's arrival came before his own, he couldn't just allow himself to sit around feeling useless forever (or even a day). Sure, the accommodations are lacking, and the situation itself certainly takes some adapting to, but it's doable, and it isn't home. He knows that he will undoubtedly return to face the scenario he had left behind eventually, and that stays with him in the back of his mind every day. He also knows he has responsibilities and loose ends to tie up, and he has no qualms in doing just that.

But now, just for the moment, he's content to have a breath of peace. A break from the occasional chaos of Haven, and from the perpetual chaos of his own world. Not for himself, though he certainly appreciates it. He just appreciates it more for Oz. The rocky future left behind still sits poorly with him, but he knows that it affects that boy behind his protective smile just as strongly, if not more so.

He idly flicks his lighter, some busted piece of junk he had managed to salvage from the ruins with barely enough fluid left to light his dwindling cigarettes. Smoking, he decides, can wait for a little later in the day. For now, he leans down to pick up the bucket set beside the staircase and turns to set off for the well. The day ahead of him may be long, but he'll savor every minute of it.
