Applications

APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN!
The next processing date is Friday 11th October

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every two weeks, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. If you wish to request a specific apartment, please do so in the relevant part of the application. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Every attempt will be made to place a character in their chosen apartments, though this may not always be possible depending on the slots available.

Applications are open constantly, but are only processed every other Friday at 7PM EST. The Saturday following acceptance, an IC mingle log will be posted for characters to be introduced to the game.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old.

Character Name: Kyouko Sakura
Canon: Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Canon Point: Middle of Episode 9

Background/History: GeneralKyouko

Personality:

Kyouko has a history of fluctuating beliefs and ideals. As with most younger kids, her idea of justice and righteousness was shallow and one-note. Her values were also dictated by circumstance; with few friends at any early age, she loved and relied on her family more than an average girl would. This applies in particular to her father, a priest, who was the patriarch and provided for the family. He was a very honest and sefless man, and these sympathies drove him to preach a message that differed from traditional doctrine. Young Kyouko, however, believed wholeheartedly in her father’s message, and she couldn’t understand why the people rejected it. The injustice of it hurt her terrifically.

Kyouko’s family became very poor when her father was excommunicated from the church, and during that time of poverty, she learned the true value of keeping food on the table. It was a value she never let go of. To keep her family from starving, and to reverse the seemingly terrible injustice of her father’s word being ignored, Kyouko became a Puella Magi and made a wish that she thought would set everything right. For a little while, it seemed to work and Kyouko was happy. She was happy to be a hero, even behind the scenes, and to serve justice by saving people from witches. When tragedy struck, though, Kyouko became a very different person. Her father murdered her mother and sister, and killed himself when he found out the truth behind Kyouko’s wish.

It seems natural that this would turn any person’s world upside down. In response, Kyouko became selfish and jaded. With how things turned out, it seemed idiotic to use her powers to help anyone but herself. When the series begins and Kyouko first appears, she has completely bought in to her new ideals. She steals, and is seen habitually eating. She stops Sayaka from destroying a familiar, claiming that it’s stupid because there is no reward for doing so—she would rather have it kill a few people and become a witch. She also fights Sayaka, a fellow Puella Magi, over ideals and territory, almost killing her. She later stalks Sayaka and sadistically threatens to grievously injure the boy that Sayaka has strong romantic feelings for.

Despite this behavior, the strange thing is that Kyouko likes Sayaka. It boils down to the feelings and true nature of herself that Kyouko is repressing. Throughout the series, she goes through a fierce internal battle. After the death of her family, she is forced into maintaining a survival mode that requires ruthless self-sufficiency—there are things she thinks she has to do, and ways she thinks she ought to act; she cannot show weakness, she cannot show kindness, and she cannot rely on anyone but herself. This side of her battles with her older values—the ones she deemed worthless and naïve after the tragedy. And while her jaded side seems to dominate in her initial encounters with Sayaka, the fact that she still likes Sayaka manages to manifest in how much attention she pays her.

In reality, Kyouko is lonely and frustrated with her own lifestyle. Sayaka reminds her of herself when she was younger, and that is able to trigger some compassion in her, as well as a rising of old feelings and values. It first manifests in a conversation she has with Sayaka; she tells Sayaka the story of her past, and tries to use it to convince her to abandon her selfless ways before she is hurt by them. Sayaka rejects the suggestion flat out, and while this angers Kyouko, it also pushes her to reach out even more. There isn’t enough opportunity, though. By the time Kyouko is willing to more fully commit, Sayaka loses herself to despair and turns into a witch.

In brief summery, Kyouko has a multi-layered self. At her core, she is a girl who wants to find happiness. She has a fierce and jaded exterior, and she is willing to push her selfish agenda a long way. That said, she is still starved for company and friendship, and there’s a girl who understands the benefit of kindness and the pursuit of good buried under several layers of forced denial and hardened survival instinct.

Abilities/Powers:

Kyouko is a Puella Magi, and as such, she has a number of magically enhanced ablities: increased strength, stamina, agility and speed; healing powers; the ability to create magical barriers—these are the most prominent ones that Kyouko utilizes. The weapon she uses, which appears as she transforms and changes into her magical girl getup, is a spear. It can shrink and grow in length, and it can be broken into sections connected by chains which Kyouko can use to restrict enemies or increase the flexibility of her attacks.

While not “abilities,” per se, the costs to becoming a Puella Magi further separate Kyouko from existence as a normal human being. Upon making the contract, Kyouko’s soul was transferred into her Soul Gem, thus removing it from her body; as such, if Kyouko’s Soul Gem is destroyed, then she immediately dies. Additionally, as a Puella Magi uses her magic, her Soul Gem becomes tainted. If at any point it becomes too tainted, or if the Puella Magi succumbs to complete despair, the Soul Gem breaks and turns into a Grief Seed. A witch is then born. When a witch is destroyed, it drops a Grief Seed, which can be used to absorb the taint from a Soul Gem, thus maintaining a kind of endless cycle.

Items/Weapons: Just her Soul Gem. Its function is briefly explained in the above section.

Sample Entry Two:

Kyouko did not lack confidence, and she didn't lack power, but she owed more to her experience than she would be willing to readily admit. She also had the benefit of being more properly trained, and it was done in a much better, more supportive environment. That, along with everything else, made Sayaka's overall disadvantage as clear as day. Not that Kyouko was considering such things. Despite not having a clear vision for what she was really trying to do, beating Sayaka straight out was not on the agenda.

Even more of a mystery was her motivation -- the same thing she'd been grappling with earlier. Was it simple pity? Was it a raging, fruitless reaction to manifested despair that she was likewise fated to bear? Someday, perhaps not even long from now, would Kyouko no longer be able to reject the truth that Sayaka had arrived at? It was possible. For how long could she continue this lifestyle: to exist alone, to steal, to fight invisible battles, to hate the world…

Well, if she let Sayaka kill her here, none of those questions mattered in the slightest. That wasn't going to happen, though. After all, Kyouko sure did hate to lose.

Sayaka's first move was fairly slick, and it might have caught Kyouko off guard if she hadn't been completely focused. As soon as she sensed Sayaka's surging power, the light in Kyouko's own ring shone. She lowered her right hand and her spear appeared there in time to block Sayaka's blade. Kyouko held her weapon steady, still allowing Sayaka to maintain the grip on her off hand.

“Hey, that wasn’t bad,” Kyouko said. “Guess you've picked up some moves since last time, huh?”
