Applications

APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN!
The next processing date is Friday 11th October

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every two weeks, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. If you wish to request a specific apartment, please do so in the relevant part of the application. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Every attempt will be made to place a character in their chosen apartments, though this may not always be possible depending on the slots available.

Applications are open constantly, but are only processed every other Friday at 7PM EST. The Saturday following acceptance, an IC mingle log will be posted for characters to be introduced to the game.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old.

MEGUMI SHIMIZU | SHIKI | RESERVED | 2 / ??

[personal profile] toi_aussi 2013-05-24 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Background/History: Since no appropriate source exists, it's up to me to write as concise a summary of Megumi's history as possible. Thankfully, this shouldn't take too long, seeing as how Shiki is (at its heart) a fairly simple story.

So there's this town called Sotoba, which thrives on dead people. They sell coffins, have the best funerals for kilometers around, and are generally great people to have around as loooong-term investments. Unfortunately, Megumi is a bit of a city girl and not much of a death junkie, and so when the Kirishikis (outsiders from the big city) move in to an ancient mansion within the town she's one of the first to go (clandestinely, of course) and meet with them! This would be a great idea, except for that part where the newcomers feed on her and leave her for dead in the forest.

If this were an anime about cannibals, that'd be it, but we are dealing with Vampires here and so Megumi's death is surprisingly short-lived (ha haaaaa). She gets dug out of her grave by the Kirishiki's daywalking-”werewolf”-vampire (???) assistant, Tatsumi, and promptly begins her new life as a heartless creature of evil. (See personality section as to why this is Not Actually a New Thing At All.) While it would take a long time to summarize every important event in this show, which contains no less than thirty-eight named and plot-relevant characters and often just jumps from one major event to another, I can summarize the rest of the plot in these two sentences:

Vampires try to kill the humans to make their perfect safe vampire village, the humans try not to die or become livestock, and then both groups just try to all-out murder each other. Everyone is generally awful.

And that's basically it.

Yeah.

Personality: Have you ever read bad Kingdom Hearts yaoi fic? You know how Kairi is usually portrayed – the evil popular girl, whose only goal is to get in between Sora and Riku because she wants one of them so badly, and who's even willing to hurt them if she can't have them? Bam, that's her character right there.

But hey, let's take this at least a little seriously and start from the beginning instead. So as a human, most of Megumi's personality is actually intact – namely, in that she's kind of an awful person. She has exactly one friend in the entire town, Kaori Tanaka, and she treats her like garbage along with everyone else she has to interact with. See, Megumi doesn't like being a part of a small town with a death fixation: she's a big city girl, through and through. She wears only the most fashionable (arguably) clothes, she walks with a certain glide to her step, and she wouldn't be caught dead driving a tractor or plowing a field. About the only person she's even remotely kind to is the transfer student from the big city, Natsuno Yuuki, who she has a massive crush on. Like, scarily so – she tiptoes outside his house at night and watches him through the windows. Seriously, she's a creeper.

And here's where the first relevant tidbit about her comes in! Her crush on Natsuno is oddly relevant to her personality, not because of CR or relationships, but because of why it came about. Natsuno is a boy whom Megumi has never actually had a conversation with – in fact, he never says a single word to her through the course of her entire life. Of course, that doesn't stop Megumi from falling head-over-heels in love with the “mysterious transfer student.” See, who Natsuno is isn't actually as important as what he is; a concept, something that isn't like the villagers she hates so much. She doesn't hate Kaori because she's offensive, or mean – she hates Kaori because she's a part of the village she loathes so much. Meanwhile, she idealizes Natsuno and the Kirishikis, not only because they're new – and from the city – but because she hasn't had a chance to grow jaded by them.

Of course, she's dead by the end of the first episode, and so a lot of exposition on her life comes to a screeching halt. And that doesn't last long either, so now, it's vampire time!

Megumi takes her newfound undead status swimmingly, more than almost anyone else in the show. She doesn't once show regret for her actions, for killing or feeding on people – indeed, she performs so ruthlessly she's almost immediately assigned to the city unit, which kidnaps weak and young humans from the nearby cities to feed newly risen Shiki. When she's told to kill the father of her old friend, Kaori, all it takes is a reminder that Kaori's been working with her old crush to take down the Shiki and Megumi jumps on the opportunity.

As a vampire, whatever inhibitions she once had vanish almost entirely. When Nao Yasumori tries to reassure her that killing Natsuno might bring him back, Megumi doesn't even hesitate to remind Nao that her entire family ended up rotting in graves. When Masao begs her for help, Megumi kicks him in the throat (quite literally). When she kills Kaori's father, she sits outside the girl's window and lets her know – in no uncertain terms – what she just did. However, while much of this can be attributed to Megumi just being an awful person in general, it does seem she's at least partially trying to play the role of “badass vampire.”

And really, that summarizes Megumi quite succinctly. She's convinced she's meant for the big city, without ever having gone to know what it's like, and so she dresses in over-the-top styles and fashions. But when she tries to walk with “flair” to the Kirishiki's mansion, she falls on her face. She's convinced she's in love with Natsuno, and makes up a personality for him in her imagination – that he's cool, quiet and reserved and with an icy facade that's impossible to crack – and she tries to play the role of a blushing shoujo protagonist for him (to no avail). And when she becomes a vampire, she tries to act like a cold, uncaring killer. But when the villagers finally catch her, when she's finally realized she's going to die, she drops her various acts and just starts screaming at everyone – she's not in the wrong, it's the villagers, it's the people who laughed her and hurt her that deserve to die.

When it comes down to it, Megumi Shimizu is a girl who has gotten lost in her own imagination – and one who can't accept the reality she's been given.
