APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN!
The next processing date is Friday 11th October
IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE
We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.
In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.
You may apply for two characters every two weeks, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.
Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. If you wish to request a specific apartment, please do so in the relevant part of the application. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.
If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.
Every attempt will be made to place a character in their chosen apartments, though this may not always be possible depending on the slots available.
Applications are open constantly, but are only processed every other Friday at 7PM EST. The Saturday following acceptance, an IC mingle log will be posted for characters to be introduced to the game.
We now have a test drive community athaventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old.

Everyone I have cared about has either died or left me. Everyone — fucking except for you! So don't tell me I would be safer with somebody else, because the truth is I would just be more scared.
The important thing to know about Ellie is that she shares traits with a normal teenage girl. In an overview, she is impulsive and has a temper as feisty as her swearing vocabulary. While putting on a brave face, she shows frailty and weakness. Ellie is stubborn and refuses to be treated like a "kid", often citing that she wants to see things through to the end. These traits are often attributed to the rebellious teenager trope. Her rebellious attitude often borders on disillusioned, attempting stubbornly to take on adult survivalist antagonists despite being one singular teenage girl. But, let's back up and dig deeper.
Ellie grew up in a world in which 60% of the population was eliminated over the course of 20 years due to a zombie-like fungus infection. She was raised to be a survivor and tactical. Ellie might be a tough girl, but she still needs help taking care of herself at many points during the game. A main part of this is her innocence to anything 'normal'. She learns to depend on a smuggler named Joel who was entrusted to delivering her to an Underground rebel group known as the Fireflies. Despite their rough start, she grows to learn more through Joel's guidance, specifically about how arcade machines work, how ice cream trucks were a necessity of American life, and the joy of seeing an exotic animal. These little gems are a reflection of her innocence and youth, even if she was hardened because of the world she was born into.
Her values in the beginning are the same as the rest of the population: survive. Ellie and Joel are similar in the sense that they want to essentially complete the task they are sent to do, but Ellie is a little bit more naive in the extremes it takes to do this, even if she is quick to go to violence. Her relationship with Joel grows from complete opposites to Joel and Ellie depending upon one another. She's constantly lifted up to grab ladders and he's always there to teach her new weaponry. Joel's grim outlook on the world compliments Ellie's inexperience and naivety. A good example of this is when Tess is bitten and sacrifices herself, Ellie is headstrong in not leaving her, despite knowing her fate. Joel understands and buries his feelings on his friends death, much to Ellie's dismay. Sure, Ellie is aware of the horrors outside the quarantine zones, but Joel has instead seen it himself. Over the course of their journey, Ellie begins to understand how Joel feels on the matter after her traumatic incident with cannibals during the winter months.
Ellie's vulgar vocabulary isn't the only thing quick about her, she actually has a dorky wittiness and cleverness to her. She's often trying to get Joel to open to talk to her, trying to dig into his past. In the beginning of their journey, she tells jokes and puns from a jokebook she acquires. Her cleverness borders on natural survivor instinct, shown as she is capable of handling thugs and enemies on her own when separated from Joel. One example of how clever she is remains when Joel was injured during the winter months and she barters her hunted deer for penicillin from other survivors. Despite needing food, she uses the opportunity to put Joel's well-being above her own.
Ellie takes Joel's role in her life very seriously. After a long string of tragedies, Ellie always finds herself alone. This monophobia is battled through-out the course of their journey, often resulting in fights between Ellie and Joel. She views him as the only person who hasn't left her. This is a reference to her best friend Riley, her new friend Sam and Tess, who were all killed due to the fungus infection. This monophobia evolves into a basic state of survivor's guilt due to her immunity of the fungus. Reminiscing on the day she was bit, she goes on to state that her and her friend planned to succumb to the virus together, but Ellie was left "still waiting for her turn". This guilt makes her headstrong in finding a way to the Fireflies and help in any way possible. Those feelings also fester into keeping her promises and her actions become desperate.
Despite her age, she is shown with an immense amount of responsibility and will. From learning new weaponry, hunting alone, diving into water to save Joel (despite being unable to swim and having a fear of it), and sassing some very intimidating men with no concern for her own well-being. Ellie also shows growth with her trust, often being the more naive in the beginning of her adventure. She bonds with fellow survivors, Sam and Henry, even if Joel doesn't trust them. However, as their journey wanes on, she sees more of how desperate society has become. Referencing back to the people she traded deer meat in, she is shown to be hostile and assertive with her demands.
Ellie is shown to be vocal and more willing to open up near the beginning of her journey. She's often attempting to get Joel to open up about his feelings (particularly with a few peoples deaths) and trying to get him to converse with her. As time goes along, it is SHE who closes off. Her traumatic experience during the journey essentially switches the roles, causing Ellie to close off while Joel desperately attempts to get her to open up her feelings.
Overall, Ellie is a character that shows growth. While some of it may be bad, she is shown to develop. Ellie's strength is obvious, but her ability to keep herself alive goes past physical prowess. She learns, adapts, and becomes a true survivor. Everything she does, she does for a purpose. It's not worth nothing.
Abilities/Powers: Ellie does not possess any powers and has the standard strength and speed of a physically active 14 year old. What she does have is an immunity to the cordecyps infection. She does not show to succumb to the infection after being bit. The infection is still present inside of her and she is 'positive' when scanned by military as a carrier, but she does not become an "Infected".

You sure I can make it? If I fall, I'm going to be pretty pissed.
[ Her voice is all that separates the silence and the sound of rushing water. She gulps, clutching at the straps of her backpack a bit harder. Her partner jumps across with ease, leaving her to swallow the harsh truth: she has to make the jump. ]
Okay.. here goes nothing.
[ She backsteps a bit, getting a running start. Before she knows it, she feels the weight of her body tugging at gravity. However, she made it. The rushing stream left behind and her knees simply dug into the ground on the other side. ]
I'm alright, I guess. Didn't fall in, so there's that.
[ Up she goes, dusting off her jeans and looking back to the gap she just jumped. There was a sense of accomplishment for such an act. Something as simple as fucking crossing a river. How society has fallen. ]
Sample Entry Two:
Relax, just fucking shoot. It's just another jacked up freak. Her mind raced a mile a minute. The heavy rifle rested against the window sill, aimed down towards the courtyard. That place was infested with them - some groaning and some wailing. It sent a shiver down her spine.
"These fuckers never get less creepy. Look, that one has a wedding dress on... So, I just point, shoot, and blow their heads off? Now? Okay..."
She sounded a bit surprised, unaware of how varied the 'Infected' seemed to come. Her face lowered down to the scope of the rifle, taking a better aim. The crosshairs were shaky, trembling with a wavy sway. Ellie recalled Joel's training but that didn't mean she was the perfect student.
It took a few minutes until she gathered the strength to yank that tiny index finger back. With a resounding BANG, off popped one head. BANG, another head gone. BANG, another, and another. A missed shot caused Ellie to reload, fumbling fingers going over to put another row of shells in.
The final infected rushed - a moving target. Ellie missed the first and second shot, but the third was a charm. A heavy sigh pushed past her lips as she looked towards the countless bodies on the ground.
"It's okay to go now, right? That looks like all of them."
And it was. For once, for a short time - it was okay.
