Applications

APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN!
The next processing date is Friday 11th October

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every two weeks, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. If you wish to request a specific apartment, please do so in the relevant part of the application. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Every attempt will be made to place a character in their chosen apartments, though this may not always be possible depending on the slots available.

Applications are open constantly, but are only processed every other Friday at 7PM EST. The Saturday following acceptance, an IC mingle log will be posted for characters to be introduced to the game.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old.

Personality:

"I struggled for a long time with survivin'. And you— No matter what, you keep finding something to fight for."

Heroism. Valor. High morals. These words are normally what describes a hero; in a conventional sense, even the protagonist of a movie, novel or game. Joel does not fit this description. Valor and heroism are as lost to Joel as human civilization is in The Last of Us. Morality has been grayed out over time, being described by the game's director as, "What he wouldn't do in the past is almost a daily occurrence at this point". A smuggler that has learned to live with the way the world now works, he does what he must to survive and always finds a reason to push forward. He is a murderer, thief and a liar, but the player almost always has a sympathetic look on his actions throughout the entirety of the game. Trying to dig into the mindset of Joel is like exploring human nature itself had it endured the loss of family and friends over the duration of two long decades. Though it can be debated, he's still a good guy who deals the hand he is dealt with, whether it is for himself or the few remaining dear ones left in his life.

The game's setting takes place 20 years after an outbreak of the cordyceps fungus spreading to humans through infected crops-- on Joel's birthday, non-the-less! 60% of the population was devastated due to these events, leaving the remaining population to fight and survive against those affected, also known as "clickers". Hunters, marauders and even the martial law dictated by the remnants of the military also prove to be threats in Joel's life on an everyday basis. In order to survive in the new rules this world dictates, he makes a living smuggling drugs and guns in and out of the Boston quarantine zone. His partner on-the-job is a woman named Tess, an equally hardened and brash lady who seems to have found his trust through years knowing each other. Considering how difficult it is to achieve Joel's blessing, it is heavily hinted that the two of them have been put in the trenches once or twice and came out on top.

And then there is his younger brother, Tommy. The two of them are virtually complete opposites with Tommy being the most selfless character seen in the whole game. Even on the night of the outbreak, he wishes to stop the car to help a family in need only for Joel to stop him from doing so. This shows that Joel was not a completely good guy 20 years ago, and that he always prioritizes his family over anyone else. It has been said that Joel did his best to protect Tommy in the quarantine zones. However, Tommy became overwhelmed with guilt before the start of the game due to the actions the both of them had done in order to survive and left to join the Fireflies. They ended their relationship on bad terms and Joel is seen to be very happy when they meet again during his and Ellie's journey.

Joel is not new to loss, having even seen it before the world went to ruins. His unnamed wife died sometime before the outbreak from an unknown cause, and his daughter, Sarah, was shot and killed by a soldier under orders on the night the cordyceps struck. Tommy was also a witness to the event and it affected their relationship long-term. Such trauma paired along with the harsh life of living in a post-apocalyptic world has pushed him into being an enigmatic, soft-spoken man. He prefers to remain distant and puts his foot down when it comes to talking about his deceased family. Upon the death of Tess after the beginning of "smuggling" Ellie across the country, he demands that they would not speak of her through the entire duration of their journey. His insisting did its job as she is rarely brought up in their travels unless it involves Ellie's ailing survivor's guilt. Bringing up Sarah warrants an even more strict response, giving a simple "okay" to Ellie when too many questions are asked regarding her.

Speaking of Ellie, the relationship between Joel and his immune partner is one to discuss and analyze. They start off reluctantly, both in the mindset that they have a task to accomplish and need each other to get the job done. Joel wishes to escort her to the Fireflies in order to receive the guns taken from him and Tess. Ellie needs the assistance of someone who knows how the world operates outside the quarantine zone for survival. Joel's desire not to get close to anyone, better yet a foul-mouthed kid who cracks one too many cheesy jokes, makes an already rocky partnership even rockier. Against all the odds, however, they find room for friendship that eventually grows reminiscent to a father and daughter. Both of them become fiercely protective of one another, saving their lives time and time again and not batting an eye with how violent they must be in order to do so.

It makes sense if one thinks about it. The two of them endure and endure, crossing the entire country on foot spare the few times they are granted a vehicle or horse. Before their adventure comes to an end, almost a year has passed since they are partnered together. Awkward conversations eventually translate into talks of the past, Joel educating her on the joys and sciences of an ice cream truck. He teaches her how to whistle; humors her by being an audience to her "punny" jokes. Originally not tasked with holding a gun, Joel finally entrusts her with his life by teaching her how to use a rifle to cover him in an intense firefight. Soon after, he gives her a pistol to fend for herself as well. Their kinship is one of the blinding reasons for why Joel still has a heart. His decisions near the end of the game have her as his main priority, even if the consequences may mean sacrificing something for the greater good. Having lost his wife, child and Tess will do that, so he makes an effort not to lose another if he can help it.

Said kinship is also proof of how far he is willing to go. See, Joel really is a guy who could sit down and have a nice conversation if he does not think you are going to kill him in his sleep. But one word spoken negatively about Ellie or one threat in her direction and he will have no qualms about beating every inch of life out of you. Upon Ellie being kidnapped and taken away from him while incapacitated from a wound, he is quick to awaken, capture two of the kidnappers and swiftly interrogate them in a gruesome, relentless fashion. He does not even flinch when he jabs his knife into the back of one of their knees before jamming said blade into their mouth so they can mark the map of Ellie's location for Joel. It is heavily implied that torture and interrogating is apart of his repertoire, and that he has done it plenty of times in the past. To those that knew him back in the Boston Quarantine, he is wildly feared and known. Joel is not one to mess with.

Abilities/Powers:
While Joel definitely gives the "old man" trope a run for it's money (he's most likely in his late 40's or early 50's), he is still built to take a hit and to give one too. Every punch is thrown with full force, an indication of his kill-or-be-killed mentality. He is fierce and aggressive with a high amount of stamina to the point of rarely showing fatigue. Other than being in shape for his age, he has no supernatural abilities. His hearing, however, is almost uncanny as he can pinpoint the location of people from a certain distance by focusing in on noises such as footsteps and murmurs.

He also excels at scavenging and crafting. Whether it's modifying simple 4x4's with parts of scissors and binding or forging first aid kits, he can tinker around with objects surrounding him to make useful items in the heat of a fight. Over time, Joel has also learned how to use a variety of firearms varying from handguns and rifles to a simple bow. This makes him a formidable opponent against other humans, but he is just a human...

Sample Entry:
Been a long time since I've seen one of these.

[ there's a haggard face looking directly into the camera of the phone. he looks like he's seen better days. he has. but still, there's the slightest bit of entertainment toying at the end of his lips. it's an almost.. nostalgic look. ]

Better yet use one. I, uh.. heh, it's weird to see 'em work in a rundown place like this. The hell's the point in it? Everyone's within walkin' distance. [ and then a pause. ] Then again... I guess I'm using it, huh.

Anyways.

[ he clears his throat. his spare hand comes into play, tugging at the wrinkles of his cheek bones briefly. ]

I was stupid enough to let a young girl outta my sight for more than a minute while I took a nap. Real easy to spot 'cause she's in a medical gown. Goes by Ellie? Kid's probably looking for some clothes right 'bout now, but I'd 'preciate it if you sent her in my direction. It's room [ insert here ].

Sample Entry Two:
Joel hadn't spotted any clickers in this "Haven" place yet, so that was a relief. A place like this reeked of a fallen apart quarantine zone. It was weird. Confusing. Relieving? To see a town being run in some form by what looked like normal people caught the skeptic offguard. They were strange characters, yeah, but none of them charged at him with a shiv or machete hoping to rob the items off his dead corpse.

Still, he could never be too secure. That was why he was scrounging about, picking up bottles of old alcohol off the ground with droplets hanging to the bottom of the glass. Bit by bit was collected until a singular bottle was filled, promptly being stuffed by a dirty old rag until it touched the surface of the stale liquor. All he needed was a lighter and a Molotov was ready to be used. Into his backpack it went and he was in another drawer, hands fumbling around for the next useful thing.

God, he hoped he didn't have to use this on someone. But he knew that hope wouldn't answer his prayers. Joel didn't pray anymore at this point. It was still about Ellie and himself, and that was that. Her persisting would eventually chip away at the ice so that he wouldn't be entirely stoic to his other roommates. How would he explain the bottle of fire waiting to erupt to them? Simple. Don't cross either of them and it would stay in the bottle. Sure, Joel. That'll go over just fine.

His head was constantly aching from confusion about everything that happened. Ellie was about to have a lobotomy, and then, what, God decided a change of scenery was the best solution? Replace one shitty town to get another. His headache was well-deserved.

A pair of scissors, albeit rusted to hell and back. Something sharp always proved to be nice. He stuffed it into the side pouch of his backpack and stood up, rubbing at the bottom of his back. Old wounds made sure to resurface at the worst of times. Joel took that as a notice to return to the apartment complex and check up on Ellie, who was hopefully being a good girl and actually listening to him for once by staying inside.

He sure did hope he didn't have to pull that Molotov anytime soon.
