Applications

APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN!
The next processing date is Friday 11th October

IMPORTANT: PLEASE POST YOUR APPLICATIONS HERE ON THE NEW APPLICATION PAGE

We're so glad you're thinking of joining us in Haven, where we are all safe.

In order to apply for a canon character, please fill out the information below and post it in a comment in this entry. For an OC, please apply using the OC information. Please do not link to applications, all applications must be posted here. Please do not delete your applications; if you do not want it to be seen, you can request for it to be screened after a decision is made.

You may apply for two characters every two weeks, to a total of six characters. Only two of these may be from the same canon, and they cannot be too familiar with one another. Please make sure to mark the header of your comment(s) with RESERVED or NOT RESERVED, as well as the character name and canon. App challenges are not allowed currently.

Try to remember spelling and grammar are important, and in app length quality and not quantity is what matters. If you wish to request a specific apartment, please do so in the relevant part of the application. All parts of the application must be your own work, plagiarism will not be tolerated, though you are welcome to reuse your own old applications.

If you are asked for revisions, please don't panic! It doesn't mean the mods don't like you, only that we probably need more information before making a decision. If you are asked for revisions, you will have one week to supply them.

Every attempt will be made to place a character in their chosen apartments, though this may not always be possible depending on the slots available.

Applications are open constantly, but are only processed every other Friday at 7PM EST. The Saturday following acceptance, an IC mingle log will be posted for characters to be introduced to the game.

We now have a test drive community at [community profile] haventest which is continuously open. Posts there may be used in lieu of a sample in the application. You may also link posts, logs, or threads from other games and memes in lieu of samples, though we ask that they be no more than one year old.

dipolar: ✭ THE WALLS SO HIGH AND YOU (✫¦ AND IT'S HOLLOW)

HEI | DARKER THAN BLACK | RESERVED 2/3

[personal profile] dipolar 2012-10-15 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:
Hei is known as a "contractor". He is notorious, as most contractors are, for being an apathetic, emotionless monster who was born only to obey rationale and carry out logical commands that he deems has the highest chance of success. He himself states in episode two that contractors are not humans, they are monsters, killing machines in human skin. "All they care about is self-preservation and they won't hesitate to kill anyone they see as a threat. They're liars, betrayers." Hei is no exception to his own words. He lies, he betrays, he kills. As an amoral assassin, this is in no way a concern for him so long as it keeps himself and his own goals alive. He has done horrible things and killed countless people; it has earned him the alias "Black Reaper" and it has stuck with him even before he gained his contractor powers.

Through the series he uses his team of mercenaries to search for Bai, his sister, under the guise of a true contractor; he completes jobs for a questionable organization known as the "Syndicate" in order to get information on his sister's whereabouts. His lying has made him infamous, considering the fact that he is excellent at it. It is through fallacies that he had gained another alias, "Li Shenshung" and he is often seen parading around as a kind, shy Chinese transfer student who enjoys helping others, but is rather introverted, keeping to himself most of the time. Hei, under the name of Li, uses his civilian clothing and average personality to get employment from businesses he needs to investigate for his true job as a dog of the Syndicate; he comes across to everyone he meets as a polite, charitable young man that gets wrapped up in things far over his head. This is on purpose, of course, but to the general populace he's a charming, but blundering do-gooder who always seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. An example of how he uses this alias for immoral deeds is a moment in episode two. "Li" saves a woman, Chiaki, countless times in order to extract important knowledge from her regarding contractors and their genesis, promising her they'd run away together to earn her trust. When the woman finds out he had been lying to her, his only response is, "I told you. Contractors are liars. I'm no different."

Initially, he appears to have little to no qualms about doing hellish things in order to get what he wants, but over the course of the series, we find out that Hei is not a contractor at all. As a human who has gained contractor abilities, Hei has a fair amount of feeling in him. From the outside we see a merciless murderer, a deceitful, selfish creature. But on the inside, at his very core, he is just a troubled brother who finds himself caring unintentionally about the people he comes across. Sometimes there are moments where he reflects on the things he has done, saying rather sadly that "It feels like I have killed a lot of people." His heart has always been in the right place, but to keep those he loves safe, he has cast away the majority of his sentiment for them to keep them safe. When people close to him get injured or their lives are put in danger, his personality shifts almost one hundred and eight degrees.

It makes him irritated, sometimes to the point of shouting, making emotional death threats a regular contractor would never blurt out, causes him to panic and worry. This is demonstrated in episode four when he discovers that a father had been testing his research and using his daughter as a guinea pig where he becomes irate, snapping at the man: "If you're looking for forgiveness you won't get it from me." Even if it is irrational, Hei will go out of his way and risk his own life for the lives of other, innocent people; if those people die before him, it torments him greatly and even pushes him to seek revenge, as seen in the episode a fellow contractor Carmine dies. This is why he is hesitant to form bonds with others as his job and status as a contractor is extremely dangerous for those close to him, so he keeps people at an arm's distance at all times. When Yin, however, a "doll" - an emotionless shell of a person who uses their spirit as a medium to track others - on his team, shows a profound connection with Hei, he bonds with her and treats her and the rest of his team as a precious friends that require his protection and respect.

To protect his comrades with all of his strength, he must have considerable talent to do so. Hei is not only skillful in the art of deceit and interrogation - as seen in the first episode where he is hurting another contractor to pull information out of him regarding the whereabouts of Chiaki's files on her prohibited investigation about the creation of contractors. He is highly perceptive, able to discern what exactly to do in any given situation, the best routes to take to get to areas faster and enemy weaknesses. He is an adept fighter, fabled for the mass murders he committed while in South America with another team of mercenaries, while simultaneously acting as a bodyguard for his sister. He wears a mask to hide his identity, a bulletproof coat to shield himself from harsh attacks and is quite knowledgeable concerning his own abilities. Molecular manipulation (or electricity, as his powers are mostly recognized as) takes a great deal of concentration and understanding of elements and their constitutions - he has shown great intelligence in using the hired gun expertise he has picked up along the way. He is not a mindless killer. Everything he does is precise, has meaning.

And while it does not have much bearing on his personality, Hei has an insatiable appetite, having the ability to eat over ten bowls of ramen or multiple dishes of food in one sitting. This is remarkably noticeable in the anime, to the point where it makes most viewers believe that he eats ridiculous amounts because it is his "Obeisance" - a payment all contractors must complete after they use their abilities. This is not the case, he is just a bottomless food pit. As Li Shenshung, he acts quite embarrassed when others point out the quantity which he consumes, often blushing and looking away as seen in an early episode when he states, "Did I overdo it? Sorry, this is actually less than I usually get." In some scenes he is seen cooking; he is quite diligent and takes the time and effort to make lovely meals for himself even if he has no one to share it all with. It is clear, throughout the anime, that he evens enjoys this small pass-time, likely because it is so much more normal and peaceful than his usual activities.

Abilities/Powers:
First off, Hei is a phenomenal athelete, acrobat and hand-to-hand combatant. He has amazing speed, power and agility, can take hit after hit without struggle, has good dexterity dealing with knives and the metal cords he uses as weapons. Things like swinging from wire off of tall structures, backflips and cartwheels are as easy as breathing to Hei; not only does his adaptability and the flexibility he demonstrates in various fighting scenarios make him skilled in martial arts, it is said that his human abilities are so advanced that he can take on a contractor even without his powers with little physical strain.

Hei's true ability is known as "molecular/electricity manipulation". He is able to generate and discharge electricity through conductive resources such as water, metal and physical contact "at sufficiently high amounts to kill grown men" or mess with a building's electrical systems, an example being the computer-programmed door locks that hold Chikaki in episode one. He uses this ability frequently to carry out the jobs he's given by the Syndicate, but there are different levels of output. It is more complex than it seems; he can transform matter on the quantum level, not just use electricity to shock people or run a charge through something like the metal wire he uses. His power uses something called "special particle luminance", which can change molecules, one of the notable ways of changing humans into contractors, though for Haven's purposes, it will solely be the electricity that he demonstrates. It is the most powerful ability in the anime as it is extremely relevant to the plotline, but the ability itself belongs to his sister. He just inherited it when his sister fused with him because of it.

Hei, unlike other contractors, does not have an Obeisance associated with his power. This is because he is still human. One who fused with a the previous molecular manipulating contractor. His sister, Bai. He took her messier code - a unique title for each contractor and the fake star in the sky representing their lives - BK-201. She, as well as her power, resides inside of him, letting him use it at any time he likes as he has no price to pay.
